I'm Not a Dragonslayer [Kai/Invite]

"That's right! There's nothing I can't handle!" Shiro boasted, clearly only paying attention to the part of what was said that praised him. "If you feed my brothers' ego any more, it won't fit on the train back, you know." Kuro said, clearly teasing playfully. She seemed to be in a good mood for some reason. "Don't you know it!" Shiro declared, as if it was a good thing. Kai smiled at his partners' banter... But didn't join in. They were close enough to each other to joke like that... But Kai still felt like a complete outsider.
"Oh, it's fine." Kai told the fairy. He was pretty sure she was teasing, but he felt he should acknowledge her comment. He did blush a little at being called a knight in shining armor- He hadn't done anything! It was all Kuro and Shiro! "Well, I didn't expect to run into... Wingdramon, was it? For one. And well, you've seen Shiro. He... Doesn't do well cooped up in my tiny room. So I try to bring him here when I can- Let him stretch his legs without causing a panic in Tokyo, you know? It was just a coincidence we ended up here, now."
"So what about you?"

"O... oh, is that right, Kuro?"
Well, they were brother and sister! Giving a smirk, at least at that thought, and a small, kind chuckle as she watched Kuro and Shiro's personality bounce off of each-other, Valeria moved along with the group. She thought it nice, this pair: they fit so well, it seemed just like a show. The hotheaded brother to bring courage to the conflict, and the cool-headed sister to bring thought and to reign her brother in. It all fit, the light and dark, the yin and yang! But, after several seconds, Valeria sighed again. "Um... seriously, Kuro. You may want to step on Shiro's tail a few times..."
Completely oblivious, wasn't he? His tail was still smoking from the Wingdramon fight!
Seeing them all get together pretty well, Ami gave a small, a small blush of her own in response to Valeria's earlier comment. "Yeah, this world can get pretty scary... fortunately, I can just have Valeria act as a stuffed animal back in our world, so I've never had too much of an issue. But I see how... well, how at least Shiro can get a little rowdy."
As for why she was here? Ami shrugged a shoulder, bringing up a bag that was strapped over her shoulder, flipping it open. Inside were several large, green leaves: "Just a job... the Witchmon called these 'Titan Herbs'. Something used in this world, in mix with a few other things, to handle petrification. Apparently, I don't know too much about it. Just a small mission, ya'know."
Or did he know? Flipping the bag shut again, Ami looked back towards the three Digimon, then towards Kuro. "Hey, this is... just a guess, really. But with how bold Shiro is, and that you hadn't seen one of those holograms before... you new here?" Ami also hadn't recognized him from before, but a new face with an ultimate level was pretty rare on its own. Especially with twins!
"If ya want, we can just hang around a bit. Maybe catch you up to speed with some of the lay of the land here. Valeria and I have seen all the major places at least a few times, so if you want..."

Kuro glanced at her brother from her vantage pooint atop Kai's shoulder. "Shiro, tail." She commented, with a sigh. Oh, Shiro. Was there no limit to how oblivious her brother could be to the world around him? Shiro, looking at his tail, pretty clearly didn't care. "Imma Chartmancer! Rawr!" Yep, classic Shiro. Fortunately, in his exuberant playing, he managed to douse his tail. "Aww..."
Of course, Kai wasn't any better. Seriously. It was like he only ever cared about other humans- Bring one in, and he completely forgot he had partners! Especially girls. Uggh. Kai could never take his eyes off of female humans. Kuro couldn't see what had him so fascinated by them- After all, she was prettier by far. If anything, Kuro should be the one Kai was so distracted by that he missed Shiro's tail being on fire. Hmph.
Oblivious to his passenger's jealousy, Kai continued talking with the human girl Ami. Though in the back of his head, he was just waiting for Wingdramon to awaken and hunt them down. Hopefully not- With Kuro and Shiro having just devolved, and Ami apparently not being able to pass Champion at the moment... "Ah. Yeah... If there's one things I've discovered about Digimon job postings... They love leaving out stuff like giant angry dragons."
"Relatively new. I met Kuro and Shiro... Well, just about exactly four months ago." Had it really been such a short time? It felt like so much longer... Though maybe that was the hospital stay talking. "How about you? How long have you been doing this... If you don't mind my asking?"
"And sure, if you wouldn't mind having us along... Having a guide to all this would be great. I've learned the hard way that exploring on your own is just asking for trouble."

Oh, to be part of the fire attribute. At the very least, Valeria was able to laugh off Shiro's little escapade alongside the energetic little furball, as they moved alongside the group (well, in Kuro's case, directly on Kai's shoulder). And to an extent, Valeria felt Kuro's disappointment. Not directly, but it was just a fact that humans liked to talk to other humans! And so, she looked to Shiro, than Kuro: "So, brother and sister, right? How'd you two end up with Kai? What kind of person is he?" She was honestly curious: recently, she didn't get a chance to meet up with many unpartnered Digimon.
And as for twins? Valeria had only ever heard of them before. This was her first time seeing one!
As they would talk, Ami would keep her conversation going with Kai: "Mmm... they mentioned something like a threat of monsters, but I didn't think Valeria would be stuck in that form. I can't really blame the posting this time... but you're right, they did leave out the part of the fire-breathing dragon." She sighed, just giving a simple shrug. "And really? Four months?" A little longer than Ami had figured, based on how Kai was acting. "Having an ultimate in that time isn't unheard of, but two? You're actually pretty far along, compared to most tamers, Kai." He had at least that going for him, Ami giving him a confident smile. "As for me... a little short of three years, I believe. I've kind of lost track; seems just like yesterday I was cradling her egg."
Fortunately, there were no sounds of the dragon waking up, angry or approaching. And, as they were walking with the wind, it wouldn't be easy to be tracked, even if it did wake up: the cover of the trees would make it impossible to see them from the sky. At least, in theory, the dragon was not too big an issue for the moment. "Aye, sounds fun! Well, in that case, you should join us on the Trailmon. I'm meeting up with Koneka at the 'Training Grounds', and then we're either going to be rolling through Snowflake or Whitewater on our way back to Terminus. Ah, sorry... Koneka's a Gatomon doctor that I know; she'll be doing something to these leaves so we can more easily turn them in."
Perhaps a lot to take in at once, but it worked! "So yeah, you're welcome to join us, or hitch a ride as far as you want to go. I'll answer anything you ask that I can. But, um... this is a little embarrassing, I'm unfamiliar with twins, that much. How'd you end up with two?"

Kuro and Shiro looked at each other. How had they ended up with Kai? That was an odd question. Though, for different reasons to each of them. Kuro had been under the impression that partners were decided even before the eggs hatched- a matter of destiny. Shiro just lacked the basic understanding of a certain concept- That not everything he knew was unanimously known. "Well..." Began Kuro, "There's not much to say. Our egg, well, it was in Kai's house when it hatched. That much we know. But Kai wasn't there when it hatched- We were quite alone. I'm not sure how long we were there, exactly- A week? Month? Year? Hour? Well, we digivolved to our In Training level form. And that was when Shiro got hungry."
"Yeah!" Shiro chimed in. "Kuro told me that to get food, we needed a human! And to do that, I needed to claim one in a display of dominance! So I did! And now Kai is ours!" Kuro whistled innocently. Kai felt obligated to add, "By which he means, he bit my finger when I bent down to pick up a pen, then declared that I belonged to him." The boy chuckled. Shiro was certainly something.
Still, Kai was surprised to hear that his growth was fast. Not surprised enough to knock him out of his belief that he wasn't meant to be Kuro and Shiro's tamer, but surprised nonetheless. "Well... After I met them, it was around a week before they evolved? Though... As they said, I'm not sure how long they were In Training before that. From then... They evolved to Champion in probably... A month? Then it was just recently that they evolved again, so three months? Is their growth really that unusually fast?" Maybe he should ask some more people, to get a feel. He'd like to believe that he was less unqualified than he'd thought... But he had a hard time imagining it.
Of course we'll join you!" Shiro piped in, not giving Kai a chance to respond. "Err, well, I guess that's that. I've never been there before- Is it far?" A place called the training grounds couldn't hurt to know about. Especially since... It seemed fighting was unavoidable. Best learn how to, even if Shiro didn't think it was possible to beat him.
"As for how I got twins..? I honestly don't know. You heard Kuro's story- They don't know either." And Kuro's story rather supported his inadequacy narrative- He didn't know why they were in his house, but the only reason they'd become his partners is that he was there and they were hungry.

"About the same as me, then... as far as just waking up in an egg and meeting Ami, anyway." Indeed, there wasn't a lot known about this: heck, all three Digimon present seemed somewhat confused about it. Well, maybe not all three: Shiro seemed to have his own way of thinking about things, earning a chuckle from both Valeria and Ami.
At this point, it was clear that the dragon was either still asleep, or lost interest. Either way, they were far enough in the woods, and heading in a direction such that it would be difficult for the Wingdramon to spot them through the canopy, anyway. With that thought behind them, on that aspect of growth, Ami looked like she was just about to give a confused non-answer. Valeria, however, cut in: "That's not too slow, actually. Most Digimon barely change from their default forms at all, and when they do Digivolve, they keep that form. But for partnered Digimon, our growth is faster... but to trade off, we can't really keep our elevated forms. And, I don't know if you've tested this before, but if your partners get too far away from you, it becomes harder to Digivolve."
"Something like that, yeah." Giving a nod to the fairy's explanation, Ami gave it a quick thought over. Everything she said sounded about right, but was it really that black and white? And why did she have the answers for it, but Shiro's partner didn't?
Thoughts for another time. But the next part, Ami did know: "Well, you have to roll through Terminus again at some point, right? The Training Grounds are simply on the way there, and then the other two cities are on a different Trailmon back. Takes another two or three hours to go back that way, so you might just want to split off after the first part..."
"... Or just jump in and see the world." Stretching out her arms, Valeria took a brief look at the sky, squinting through the canopy. "Anyway, we're about... ten, fifteen minute walk from the station? I vote we keep moving before ol' scaly wakes up."

"Yes. Let's keep moving." Kai mulled on what he had been told. Not too slow, huh? But not necessarily fast either, he'd bet.Maybe certain Digimon grew at different rates? That wouldn't surprise him. And considering humans were, as far as he could tell, living batteries... Maybe the growth was independent of their partner. Or maybe Kuro and Shiro just grew extremely fast, and were slowed down by him. Or maybe... Blah. He shouldn't think about this. It annoyed him every time.
Of course, the idea that he was just a normal, un-special tamer never crossed his mind, so sure was he that he was inadequate. "Say... Maybe it has to do with the way they Digivolve? I mean... I can't say I've seen much digivolution... And you weren't exactly looking at the time, but I could have sworn they were starting to fuse before they split back apart." It was just a thought. Maybe all Twins did that, he didn't know. Maybe Ami did.
And of course, maybe she could tell him while they were on their way out of here. He didn't know how long he planned to stick with her- He didn't want his parents to get worried. But he did want to see more of the Digital World. It was a dilemma. Oh well, he'd think about it on the way. When they weren't in imminent danger of being eaten.

And so they moved: catching their stride, the group wouldn't find too much difficulty moving through the woods, apart from the thick brush below. Occasionally, Ami would unconsciously move her hand to rub her wounded shoulder, but apart from that, it was largely (and thankfully) uneventful for the group, with only this idle conversation between them.
Idle as far as Valeria's perspective, anyway. At Kai's question, the fairy gave a shrug: "That may have to do more with their species than anything about them being twins... Ami?"
"One sec." Catching her partner's drift, Ami pulled her Digivice into her palm, and using the same scanner from before, gestured it towards Shiro, then towards Kuro. Briefly, both Digimon would appear as a holographic projection above the device, Ami's eyes quickly scanning the information. "Digimon of Yin and Yang? Not too much information other than their moves, but based on that, let's see... maybe they were once the same Digimon to begin with, and then they split up?"
"Hey, I did notice before. Did you two say that you came out of one egg?" Valeria asked curiously, directing the question mostly towards Kuro.
If so, that made sense, how they would be twins! Other than that? "Anyway, I wouldn't worry too much about it. They are what they are, and this world is weird enough as it is. Valeria's ultimate's a metal golem, and her other forms get pretty wild as well."
"Says the lady coming from across dimensions to be here?"
"Point taken."
As it was, it wouldn't take them overly long to get out of the woods. Once they reached the main path, they were well out of the dragon's territory. Or so they hoped, anyway: out here, with no cover, something could just fly over at any moment and pick them off!
... Well, perhaps. But with the train station and a billowing smoke stack in sight, that seemed pretty unlikely. "You use the trains much around here? Never seen a feral attack on one of these-"
"-Because Trailmon lay their tracks in otherwise impassible areas. They create tunnels and tracks as they please when they make their routes, so its pretty impossible for most things to get at them. Anyway..."
Valeria turned towards their other three. "Thanks for, well, everything. Kind of an embarrassing display back there, but thanks for helping this damsel in dis- ow!" Feeling a sharp elbow against her arm, Valeria winced, then chuckled, Ami giving a slight glare out of the corner of her eye.
"... Really?"
"Gotta have some fun somehow, girl."

One Digimon that split up...? Kai looked at Kuro and Shiro, but Shiro didn't care and Kuro just shrugged. If they were, they clearly didn't know anything, so Kai left it at that. "Makes sense... By the way, Valeria said something about having trouble digivolving at the moment? Why's that? Err... If you don't mind me asking, that is." Smooth, Kai, smooth.
"Ha! Wasn't a problem!" Shiro would tell Val, for Kai. Well... Whatever. Shiro could be confident for now- That was his prize for winning. Though maybe that wasn't the best, as it just fed Shiro's growing superiority complex. Bah. kai hated second-guessing every thing he did. He needed a guidebook for this, or something. Too bad there was no way such a thing existed. Maybe he would write one. "Anyways, yeah.I take the Trailmon reasonably often." Kai managed to successfully ignore Val's 'damsel in distress' comment, this time..
