Isaac didn't fight it as Maia lightly squeezed his hand, instead taking hers in his. As weird and sick to his stomach as today made him feel, having her here was a huge comfort. He was able to bury it under theatrics and pure, bubbling rage when push came to shove, but once he was finished running his mouth the nausea returned swiftly. "Not really. I mean, as alright as it could be, I guess," he said, stumbling over his words as he tried to figure out how to voice his concerns. Did that make sense? Did any of it make sense? He was finding it increasingly difficult to tell.
He considered just waving it off. Letting it sink a little deeper, dig its claws in a little harder, hide beneath his heart for the peace of mind of others. He only needed to remember Beelzemon to discard this idea as incredibly stupid. Whether inside of himself or in a more literal sense, he couldn't keep running forever. And he couldn't hide how he felt from Maia any longer, either. God, he was beyond lucky to have her in his life. The fact that two years of wasting it and hurting her through pure obstinacy didn't even make her blink when it came time for forgiveness was just further proof that he hit the jackpot.
And yet . . .
"Do you think you were right? To just forgive me like that, after all the crap I pulled?" he asked, forcing himself to keep eye contact with Maia despite the guilt weighing him down. Beelzemon's sins would be crawling on Isaac's back for a while. He knew they raged deep inside of him, just waiting for the right catalyst to run rampant. When would it be? Would today's warnings stave them off, or would they just be delaying the inevitable? Frankly, he was finding it hard to even forgive himself.
"And, well, knowing what you do now, do you think something could still work out between us?" Now the other shoe was starting to drop. "Because you're amazing, Mai. You're kind, and funny, and you always know how to make me smile. A-and you're one of the only people I feel like I can rely on over here. You're why Japan's been so wonderful for me so far. I don't want to lose you. Ever. But I'd rather lose you than hurt you, and for two whole years? There's no way I could handle that. I-I mean, we could still be friends, but . . . "
He started to trail off, not even sure what he was saying at this point. It was clear he still didn't trust himself fully. Maybe he'd need a bit of an extra push.

It caught Maia slighly off guard to hear the boy admit that he wasn't entirely okay. Most people would have just brushed it off and said they were fine. Her head turned to better watch Isaac's movements, eyes trying to scan his face for whatever he might have been thinking. What was biting at the spirit user's mind? Was it the Beelzemon? Maybe, it was something entirely different. It was hard to tell.
Then, there was the question. Did she think she should have forgiven him? Now, it was Maia's turn to feel heavy, eyes shifting down for a moment, while she searched for an answer. Honestly, she hadn't put much thought into it, on the idea that it at least gave them some sort of happy moment that seemed long overdue. Still, her eyes would lift up to meet Isaac's, albeit slowly. "It's... hard to say," she answered, softly. Her voice seemed like it was trying to escape the situation, hiding in the recesses of her throat or mind. "I-I mean, I did. And... if you did that right now? I think I still would have forgiven you." It was hard to explain the logic behind it. It wasn't so much a solid reasoning as it was a gut feeling. There was no way that the tamer could see herself being alright with not forgiving him.
But, the hesitant expression quickly changed, as another question was asked. It was replaced with an almost blank stare. Somehow, it had caught her incredibly off-guard, despite being a conversation that was long overdue. Maybe, the girl had expected the subject to have been brought up on her own terms? Ah, well, this worked too. There was a blush coming to her face again, listening to everything Isaac had to say. She seemed to be mulling everything over, but as her silence progressed, a smile seemed to be growing more noticeable across her lips.
"Hey," she finally managed out, in her usual tone. "You're not going to lose me, okay?" This was a very determined statement, as she pulled herself closer to him. "Two years? It's nothing. If that happens, we'll figure it out from there." There was a moment of silence, as she glanced toward the Rookie running ahead of them. It looked like he was doing the best job he could to stay out of this conversation. Good.
Still not looking at Isaac, she added, "plus... I've already seen your demon," she pointed out. After all, the Beelzemon was essentially the embodiment of that. "And, I can handle that." Now, the blonde finally threw a glance over to Isaac, "I..." she paused again, trying to think of if she was going to regret her own words. "I really care about you," while this partially sounded distressed, it also sounded really relieved.
Looking over at the teen, Maia tilted her head slightly, as if debating something. Her free hand reached up to touch the side of Isaac's face that was further from her. There was a small hesitation, as if hoping that the touch would distract him, before quickly shifting to brush her lips against his cheek. With a small peck, she turned again, feeling entirely embarrassed by having been that bold. The blonde let out a small laugh, as if either the weight was crushing her or had been entirely lifted off of her body. Heck, she didn't even know which it was right now.
"I don't know," the girl tried to sound as nonchalant as possible, "I think it could work out."

Just a gut feeling in the end, huh? Isaac wasn't sure how he felt about that answer. There had to be some sort of reasoning, right? Something that made him redeemable after all of the crap he pulled? It couldn't be simple as just her gut. The worst part is, he knew that would likely be how Elliot answered too. Just something about how he had a gut feeling that Isaac meant well all along, just like all the other gut feelings he had. It was rash. Thoughtless, sometimes. And yet, coming from Maia, he was far more inclined to trust the feeling. She wasn't young and naive like Elliot. He knew he could rely on her.
Of course, he didn't know how to feel about what came next either, but for completely different reasons. This time it was because he was too stunned to comprehend what had just happened. The boy blushed a neon red, lagging behind the group a bit as he briefly went weak in the knees. He could barely make a sound, except to turn to a giggling Elliot and say a half-hearted "Oh, be quiet!" Did she really just do that? And then play it off so easily? Sometimes, Maia could be really suave, and when she was the poor boy was never prepared for it. He tried to find the right words to respond to her, but nothing came out.
So instead, upon catching up with the girl again, he gave her a kiss on the cheek as well. It was a lot harder to play it off cooly when he had to stand on his tiptoes to pull it off, of course. "Well, we'll have to see, won't we?" he asked, smiling radiantly. "Although probably starting things off tomorrow would be a better idea. I just want to sleep today off after all the crud I've been through. " He knew there'd be plenty awaiting him tonight, both nightmares and dreams.
After today, though? He felt ready to handle it.

Continuing her pace, the girl let Isaac fall behind a little. Partially so that he wouldn't see how red she was turning. Luckily, it felt like she had calmed herself down after only a moment. Of course, Elliot's giggling didn't help, nor did Kuu pausing to stare at her, clearly judging her. She was never going to hear the end of that one. Oh well, somehow she'd pulled it off pretty smoothly, if she did say so herself! Some self-doubt filtered through her head, debating on if she had actually overstepped any bounds, but was pleasantly surprised when Isaac caught up. Despite the need to stand on his toes for it, somehow it had caught her off-guard. What had she expected to happen?
Who knew, honestly.
Regardless, the term 'butterflies' felt like a pretty fitting term. Sure, it was kind of spoiled for them that to some extent, they would have a relationship, but it was surprising, all the same! Finally, Kuu stuck his tongue out, falling back to walk only a couple feet in front of his tamer, "I don't like romance movies," he commented, almost offhand. "Westerns are way better." Well, he certainly wasn't going to get that theme out of this trip!
"I agree. This already feels kind of like a weird dream, though," Maia admitted. It all really did. There was no way that these kind of things happened in real life. Hopefully, though, none of them were going to wake up to realize it was, in fact, just a dream. There was one way to find out, and that was to go home. On the topic of sleep and thinking of beds... "So, do you think that we... just go back through the forest to get home? I'd rather not end up in another random point in time." This seemed fair enough. Who was to say they wouldn't end up ten more years forward, or even forced back in time? She didn't care to find out what life was like on a different timeline than the one she belonged, at this point.

Weird dream. Yeah, that was without a doubt the best way to describe this day. Isaac just knew he'd wake up, the lessons he learned lost in a haze in the back of his head and Maia still not asked out. Would that be such a bad thing, though? Sure, everything turned out okay in the end, but if none of this ended up happening he'd have a chance to do things properly when the real moment came knocking. He sure as heck found himself wishing he could have told Maia himself than being busted by her future self, for example. It embarrassed him just thinking about it! At least Elliot had been quiet recently. Turned out teasing Isaac was a lot less fun when yes, he was proudly owning up to being head over heels for Maia. Then it went from seeing his brother get all silly and embarrassed to seeing him get all mushy and romantic. That wasn't fun!
"Hey, if we got each other, I'd be able to handle any timeline we fall into," Isaac said, trying to sound cool. "But yeah, I definitely want to go back to the start.
Wait a minute. The X! All we gotta do is follow the X, right?" Suddenly it hit Isaac why some of the scars were fresh, and some were faded. They weren't moving through space! They were moving through time! That same tree which seemed to multiply and confound him was actually the best landmark he could ask for. He excitedly ran off, looking for that carefully-marked tree that stood at the borders of past, present, and future. It stood like a stern warden, watching the fog and keeping it from spilling out into the reality past the treeline. Once he had reached the tree he stood, smiling gently as he waited for Maia, Kuu, and Elliot to catch up. Wordlessly, he offered his hand to Maia. Like hell they were going to come this far, only for him to lose her to this misty maze.
It was kind of funny. When they weren't so scared and lost, the vaguely pink haze and the light embracing the trees looked downright gorgeous.
"Well, we're here. Last call if there's anything you want to see or do before we go home, " he said, almost too captivated by the view to start moving. What if this was all just a dream? Was there anything he would regret not doing before he woke up? It was hard for him to tell, honestly. There was just too much for him to process after today, both for better and for worse. However, standing here, with his brother at one side and the girl of his dreams at the other, staring at the strangely serene boundary between worlds?
He felt like everything would be okay.

In a way, Maia hoped this wasn't all a dream. After all, if it was, then there would have been so much that was established today that would be completely erased. On top of that, it would only build up worries about what the future would bring. Sure, this future seemed rather unpleasant, but at least she'd go into it knowing this was an actual possibility. It all felt unlikely, however, so she would push the legitimate thought of this not being real to the side.
"As long as nobody gets kidnapped again," the tamer added, throwing a glance to Elliot. At least he wasn't hurt. That would have been awful. But, it was true. If they handled this together, and went elsewhere together, what could possibly go wrong? Heck, maybe they'd find a better future ahead of them. But, the girl really would prefer to save that for when she was actually in that future.
Maia watched Isaac run ahead of the group, looking for that tree. The X? Oh, she'd forgotten entirely about that! Well, that certainly made the situation a little less stressful, on it's own! The girl's Kudamon waited for his tamer to pass, before jumping onto her leg and winding himself back up onto her shoulder. Reaching up, she scratched the little Rookie's nose, only for him to scrunch it a little. Ick. Her hand smelled like Isaac. Was that scent just going to rub off on her now? Oh, well. Being pet was still a bonus, even if he didn't necessarily care for a different scent than entirely his tamer's. Maybe, he was just jealous.
With the offer of a hand, there was no hesitation in taking it. Kuu sniffed, turning his head away. Ugh. Yep. She was just going to keep smelling like boy. Well, at least they wouldn't get lost this way. Maia wasn't too great with directions when it came to getting lost in forests. Not that getting lost was a recurring thing... Okay, maybe it was. The blonde wasn't too great with knowing where she was going.
"I think I'm ready to go," Maia responded, with a breath. She couldn't imagine Elliot wanting to waste any more time here. After all, today was a long day for him, especially.
Kuu finally looked toward Isaac, almost sleepily mumbling a, "hooooome," before lowering his head onto Maia's shoulder. Did playing with his older self wear him out or something? Still, the girl took a moment to admire the forest. It wasn't so bad looking, when she wasn't absolutely lost in it. She took a deep breath, eyes shifting to the X on the tree. There was no way that this could all be a dream.
Finally, she took a step forward, gently pulling on Isaac's hand while flashing a smile, "come on. Let's go home."
