Isaac tried to think of what he wanted to say, or rather what he didn't want to say. Telling Maia too much, too fast would be an utter disaster. At the same time, his chest was practically straining, wanting to finally just let everything out. Keeping it all inside was really starting to weigh him down. "I dunno. I never really expected a lot out of this vacation," he said, his words slow as he tried to put it all together properly. "Like, I'd get to spend quality time with my bro, eat good food, see new sights. But then we'd all end up coming back to normal. Then all of this happened and turned it from a vacation to an adventure, and I'm still not sure how I really feel about it. Like, I want to help protect people, and exploring the Digital World is fun, but I kinda feel like we got robbed of a normal vacation. I think I've almost died more times in this week than I have in my entire life." He couldn't help but laugh a little at that, even if it wasn't funny.
"But then I met you," he finally managed, his voice becoming far more firm and assured. It was like a switch had flipped. "Suddenly I had someone I could confide in and trust. A really awesome person, too. Some days we'd go on those death defying adventures, other days we'd just stay up late texting the night away. Either way, I can't say how much knowing I can count on you means to me. Why do you think I l- called you my best friend?" Phew, caught himself there.
Then came the stormclouds, hanging over the warmth of what Isaac last had to say. "But California's gonna be 16 hours behind Japan. By the time you're up it'll probably be evening for us. By the time we're up, you'll be asleep. Its gonna be so weird going from talking to you every day to a few hours at best." There was worry in his voice. How could there not be, when this amazing person who chanced into his life was going to slip right through his fingertips? The idea of almost never seeing her again cut deeply. Was he holding her hand a little bit more tightly now, or was it just his imagination?
"Damnit, I'm gonna miss you so much."

Maia had gone quiet, listening to what the boy had to say. Their vacation did seem kind of like more work than play. Did he regret coming to Japan? After all, if he hadn't come here, maybe all of this would have been avoided somehow. In a different situation, Isaac could be back at California with Elliot, doing whatever they wanted to without the constant reminder of the alternate world. Though, the tamer wouldn't have met anyone when she had gotten lost on the way to the store, then. It was weird to think of what would have changed if the brothers hadn't gone on this disaster of a vacation.
But, then the topic had turned to her. Amber eyes widened slightly as a blush brushed across her cheeks. For some reason, she hadn't expected the topic to end up about herself. The teen didn't catch the almost-slip-up. Still, there was that nagging term. Best friend. But, that wasn't so bad, right? It was better than nothing.
Then, the bomb dropped about the time differences. He was probably right. Maia had found it a difficult enough time to keep in touch with her friends in Illinois. Why didn't she think that there would be a problem with it in this case? Maia could feel her chest tighten again, along with Isaac's hold on her hand. The teen could feel herself shiver slightly, trying to keep herself from panicking. In a normal case, this would be the point where she'd cross her arms and try to sooth herself. But, she didn't want to pull away from Isaac, so she left her hand where it was -- in his.
Now, her eyes shifted to look at the floor. The blonde bit her lip, trying to keep everything in check. "I-I'm going to miss you, too," she murmured. The voice that had escaped her throat sounded small, almost fragile. It felt like if anything moved, her words would just shatter. The teen took a deep breath, trying to collect herself. This was probably the closest she'd get to look before leaping, right?
"I-uh," she paused, finally looking back to the boy. What was she supposed to say? Had Maia even planned anything before she started speaking? Ah, abort mission. There wasn't enough courage in the world for her to say what she had started, so instead she dropped to a soft, "I really wish you didn't have to leave."

Hearing Maia's voice so small and so fragile struck Isaac hard. How could it not? He was worried that this little admission was going to hurt her. What if she started crying? Isaac didn't know if he could handle that. It would have broken him right in two. For that reason, was it any surprise whatsoever that he pulled the soft voiced girl in for a hug? It was firm yet gentle, as if he was trying his hardest to comfort Maia yet badly afraid of hurting her. "I wish I didn't have to leave, either," he choked out, his own voice growing softer as well. What was he supposed to say? How was he supposed to say it? His heart was screaming at him incoherently, and he didn't even have a clue what was going on.
He didn't know if he wanted to end the hug, or if he never wanted to let go. He looked up at Maia as he gently held her, his face warm and hot from his blush. He kept trying to say something, anything, but the words tangled in his throat before he could even find what to say. Finally, he managed to find something. "I don't think there's anywhere I'd rather be than right here. With you," he concluded, the boy slowly yet surely working his way towards what he really wanted to say to her. Why was it so hard? Why was this choking feeling in his heart and throat so overpowering? More than anything he wanted so badly to tell Maia the truth, but he always felt himself falling silent at those last, critical words.
"I'll always try to make time, okay?" he asked, sounding somewhat resigned to his fate of leaving. "I promise, a day's not gonna pass where you don't hear from me. It won't be easy, but you're worth it to me." And yet a day like this would never be possible again, and Isaac had mo idea how to feel about that.

To Maia, the hug was a surprise. She didn't expect anything to come out of the conversation, really. Taking a deep breath, the girl wrapped her arms around Isaac, finding herself unable to say anything. On a normal day, this was when she'd have just started using sign language to speak, but nobody was around to translate for her, so it would be pointless. Heck, even Kuu could translate it! As long as he didn't decide to change the words around to make 'better' sentences. Instead, she resigned herself to the silence.
But, to think that this was probably the last time they'd actually hang out stung. Too much had been left undone, and she didn't have the time to figure out words or actions to display. What could she do, though? Words had escaped her, and she was stuck with only listening. With her? Surely, there were better places to be. Someplace else. California? Home. He was going to go home. And, this vacation would eventually fade away. Would they?
With his promise, the blonde nodded, working on wanting to say something. But, what? What could she even begin to say? Taking a shaking breath, she managed out a joking, "we're going to mess up each other's sleep schedules really badly, aren't we?" It was worth it. Though, the idea that it would mess with Isaac's life didn't necessarily sit well with her. There was no way, considering timezones, that they would be able to talk too much otherwise.
"But, I mean," she tried to sound more like herself, rather than this fragile being, but failed. "It's worth it for... being best friends, right?" Was there hesitation in that? Hopefully that was something that could just be chalked up to her nerves. Even better, maybe it would go unnoticed entirely, in the moment.

Isaac had no idea what to do or say next. He simply stood there, Maia wrapped in his arms and him wrapped in hers. He didn't want to let go. Not of the hug, not of this vacation, and especially not of Maia. He knew he'd have to eventually, but for the time being his mind was racing with excitement, possibilities, and even a little bit of fear. Sooner rather than later he'd have to go, and he wasn't sure if he'd ever end up seeing Maia again. This vacation was expensive enough for just two weeks of time. How would they ever be able to return? Between that and the time difference, he was terrified that he'd slowly end up fading out of her life.
He couldn't help but snicker a little at the girl's joke. His laugh may have been a tiny bit more sorrowful than usual, but there was at least some humor to be found in the situation. "Oh yeah, you bet," he said, a small smile on his face. "Waking up for school's gonna be a pain, that's for sure." Right, school. That'd be another thing he'd have to start back into once he returned from Japan. It was a transitional period for him and Elliot, where their status was ambiguous, but it seemed like they would be due for re-enrollment as soon as this little diversion ended. Back to school, away from Digimon. Was it possible life could return fully back to normal, and this whole vacation would be like one weird, forever unmentioned episode of his life.
"You're worth it for me," he admitted, a bit of blush spreading across his face again. "You've always been." That word had arisen again, and he almost wanted to kick himself for introducing it to the conversation. It was too convenient of an out, too easy of an escape. How would he ever be able to work up the nerve to tell Maia how he felt if he just had that door open to freely duck behind? He couldn't handle it anymore. He had to finally steel his nerve. He looked Maia in the eyes, trying his best to finally say what he had been dying to all day long.
"Do you think there's a better word?" he finally asked, feeling a weight sloughing off of his shoulders. "Because you mean a lot to me. Like, more than any I've friend I had before.
Maia, I think I-"
BZZZZT! The buzzer rang through the laser tag arena, signaling that their game time was over. Isaac looked around the room in a mix of shock and indignation. Seriously!? Now!?

A better word? How could there be a better word? Even as Isaac continued to talk, Maia found herself trying to fully comprehend what was being said. He liked her more than any friend he'd had? Wouldn't that just put them right back at best friend? Of course, even in denial, Maia was having a hard time convincing herself that he was only talking about friends at this point. Maybe, there was actually a chance somewhere in this conversation. It sure felt like a pretty big opening to admit to anything she may have been feeling, but she just couldn't bring herself to do it.
The sound of the buzzer made the blonde jump. Almost as suddenly as it had sounded, she pulled away from the other teen, blushing profusely. "Game's over," the girl smiled, sheepishly, waiting to see if Isaac was planning to leave the room with her. Well, they couldn't just stay there!
This made the perfect opportunity to escape the conversation, where ever it was going. Maia took a step toward the door, before pausing, turning to look at the spirit user. "W-wait," she finally managed. She couldn't just end whatever Isaac was saying like that. The tamer was tired of the excuses. And, if he was going to say anything important, there was a chance she'd never get him to say it otherwise. "What was it that you were saying?"

Isaac was hoping he'd finally have the chance to tell Maia how he felt. It was the perfect moment, too, until that damn buzzer derailed his train of thought. It seemed like Maia was taking the opportunity to get out, too. She was leaving the room before Isaac even had a chance to collect his thoughts again, only giving him a sheepish smile in response. Was he ever going to be able to get this off of his chest? Or was the universe going to keep having a good old laugh at his expense?
Then Maia came to a stop, turning around to ask him what he had to say earlier. What seemed like another leg of this race they were running was now turning into the finish line right before his eyes. There was no more time to hide, but at this point he was sick and tired of hiding. Maybe he'd be rejected. Maybe he'd luck out against all the odds. In the end, though, it would all come down to this moment of truth. If he denied how he felt now he'd never have the chance to properly tell Maia how he felt. He sighed, trying to find the right way to word the thoughts completely engulfing his brain.
"I was just going to say that meeting you has been the best thing to happen to me on this vacation, and that, well-" He found himself faltering at the edge of the cliff, trying his hardest to work up the nerves to take that final plunge. Slowly he walked to the exit where Maia was standing, thinking as he wandered. Soon they were both standing at the door, and with that Isaac was officially out of routes for escape. It was do or die, and he was sick and tired of the die part.
"I like you, Mai. A ton," he finally managed, a light red dusting across his face. Despite that, he still managed to look Maia right in the eye. She deserved nothing less now that he was finally confessing what was on his mind.
With that, a weight had fallen off of his shoulders and instead taken residence in his stomach. It was a mess of relief and anxiety and doubt and giddiness and he had no idea how to even decide if he liked it or not.

There was a strange silence as Maia worked to fully process what had been said. A knot had formed in her chest. The girl worked to maintain eye contact with Isaac, but ultimately failed, eyes dropping to her shoes. Sure, she had kind of felt that this was coming, but she didn't expect it to actually be said! Somehow, the blonde thought there would be more to it. Another game that involved fleeing from answers. This was a breath of fresh air.
"Y-you do," she confirmed, in a slow, soft tone. It wasn't even a question, at this point. Maia had to hear it again, as if letting it sink in. The tamer bit her lip, realizing that she had been smiling for who-knew how long. Of course, the blush didn't settle, either, as she searched for something to say back.
Of all the things she could say, nothing seemed right. Slowly, amber eyes would lift to return the eye contact. Even after he had admitted to it, Maia found it hard to respond. What was there to be afraid of? It didn't even make sense! But, she wouldn't allow herself to move until something was said. "I," she paused, forcing herself not to look away again. "I really like you too," the girl murmured, shuffling her feet.
In some attempt to break the potential awkward moment, Maia moved toward the door, only to reach out and lightly pull on Isaac's hand. With a soft tug, she found herself still smiling. "Game's over," she repeated, in a more energetic tone. It was, wasn't it? There really wasn't much more chasing to be done. And, they still had to leave the room, considering their game of laser tag had literally ended. What would they do now?

When Maia went quiet, and couldn't even look Isaac in the eye, the boy found his stomach sinking into the ground. She didn't feel the same way, did she? This was a mistake. He should've never said anything. He was going to lose someone truly amazing. She just said she liked him a lot too. He wouldn't be able to look himself in the eye.
Wait, she said what? Recovering from his worries, Isaac found Maia looking him dead in the eye, and relief spread through his body as she managed to say the words he had been longing to hear for a long time now. The boy didn't even have time to blush. He was too busy grinning from ear to ear, barely able to contain his excitement. Part of him wanted to go charging through the arcade, laughing and loudly telling everyone that she said yes. As far as Isaac was concerned, this was the happiest damn day of his life. He couldn't even bring himself to second guess her words. There was far too much joy in his heart to hold self-doubts today.
When she took his hand he gladly reciprocated. Did it feel a lot warmer than usual, or was it just him? Still, he moved to exit the laser tag room with Maia, their hands as intertwined as their hearts. "Yeah. No sense sticking around here," Isaac said as he left. Maybe it'd be silly, but he didn't think he'd be forgetting this arcade anytime soon. It had just cemented itself as an integral part of one of his best memories on this vacation. It was going to be risky, and it was going to be stressful at times, but he'd be damned if he wasn't prepared to try his hardest for Maia's sake.
"Day's still young, Mai," he said, his voice far more confident now that he had just chased away the elephant in the room. "Anything else you want to do while we're here? Heck, we could even check out someplace else if you wanted." There were a lot of fancy businesses, stores, and restaurants at Society Hill. Today, the world was their oyster.

Well, this day had certainly gone well so far! Well was an understatement, even! Great, maybe? It was going to be weird when Isaac returned to America, but things would find a way to pan out, surely. They would find a way. And, this day would still be there as a reminder of how great things could be!
The day still was young, huh? There was plenty of time to do anything they wanted, but what was that? "Oh, I don't know," the girl shrugged, trying to think of what they could do. After all, they'd already had a lot of fun doing things that she liked. "Is there anything you'd like to do?" There were still so many options of things to do. Really, Maia hadn't cared where they were today, as long as she was invited.
On that thought, wouldn't they need to find Elliot and Kuu before leaving the arcade? Was Elliot still sick? Wait. Was he ever sick? Best not to dwell too much on it right now. Even though, when thinking more on it, Kuu had been awfully suspicious in his exit, too. There was no way that Elliot could have distracted the little fox that well, could he? Unless there had become a serious issue, she couldn't imagine the Kudamon sitting still for an extended period without spinning around and destroying the entire arcade with his energy afterward.
"Have you heard anything from Elliot?" After all, she didn't want to wander too far off without the other two.

Huh? Oh, right! Elliot! Isaac was so distracted by his date that he hadn't even realized. Beyond that one emergency text for security, of course. He figured Elliot would've rejoined him after getting the guard for sure. Instead he just remained gone, and Isaac didn't even catch on until Maia finally brought it up. It was enough to make Isaac doubt that the boy was sick, honestly. If he was Isaac would have received a lot more complaining texts. Instead, Isaac's phone was starting to seem suspiciously barren.
With how today was going, he didn't know if he wanted to thank Elliot, or blame him.
"Starting to think he's avoiding us. Maybe so we can have some alone time. If we leave the arcade I'll try and grab him," Isaac concluded. It didn't help that he hadn't seen the other boy all day. He had to have been legitimately hiding, and doing an amazing job at it to boot. With that in mind Isaac began scanning the room once more, part looking for stuff to do and part looking for his brother. Eventually his eyes fell upon one of those little crane games. Sure, 11 times out of 10 they were rigged for the express purpose of taking all his money, but what self-respecting boyfriend wouldn't at least try to win a prize? Wait, were they boyfriend and girlfriend now? The words still felt weird in his mind, but also far too right. He really hoped he could make this work even after the vacation.
"Hold up, I'm gonna go win you something," he said, walking over to the crane. It stood there, taunting him with bright flashing lights and siren noises. There was a giant pile of stuffed toys sitting at the bottom. Were they moving slightly, too? Isaac figured this arcade would find new and innovative ways of rigging its crane. Every crane had its own trick. He put in a token, jiggled the stick to try and get a feel for how it moved, and then with the press of a button sent it descending into the toy pile.

Alone time? How in the world did Elliot convince Kuu to allow them 'alone time'? As far as Maia knew, the little fox was not a big fan of Isaac, so to leave them alone for more than two minutes felt like a stretch. Maybe, he got stuck somewhere. It was the only logical excuse.
Then, Isaac said something about winning her something. "Those things are rigged. You really don't have to," she murmured. Maybe, it was a bit embarrassing? Or, she just really didn't want the boy to waste his money fussing with a machine that was going to just rip him off. Of course, she wasn't going to tell him not to try to win something. It was his money, after all.
It seemed like there was a good amount of stuffed animals in the machine. But, they really were moving. That was weird. Still, Maia watched the claw drop into the toy pile, grabbing for something, before it pulled up. He had gotten something! But, as the object ascended, it became more and more familiar. The pile of toys seems to jerk violently, seeming to only grow worse as the claw lifted, contents of the machine even being tossed around a little. Now, white and purple were completely visible as the 'prize' was revealed.
"...Kuu?"
Sure enough, the pipefox was stuck in the claw! There were clear distressed sounds, as the rookie tried to tell the machine that he was busy playing, but it didn't listen. In a last-ditch effort to be released, the fox stretched down to grab one of the stuffed animals. While he succeeded in snagging it, the claw was persistent in holding the strange fox until it would reach its destination to finally drop him. Well then! At least nobody had to wonder where he was anymore!

"Yeah, but I wanted to- what the heck?" Isaac's proud smirk at beating the machine at its own game went away as he saw just what exactly he grabbed. Firstly, did it count at overcoming the rigging if he grabbed something that wasn't even part of the machine. Secondly, why was Kuu in the machine in the first place? That was really stupid and dangerous! Someone could've poked his eye out on the claw! He tried slamming the button to make the claw preemptively release Kuu, but instead it simply marched on to the duct where toys were released and dropped Kuu. Would he remember that he could float, or would he come tumbling out of the machine and end up joining the party.
"Kuu, what are you doing in there?" Isaac asked, looking curiously at the Digimon wherever it went. His voice was equal parts amused and concerned, leading to an overall sense of befuddlement. In other words, generally how everybody reacted to Kuu. Maybe one day he'd be able to win Maia a proper prize, but it seemed for today the universe was going to keep on conspiring against him. "In fact, how did you even get in there?"
He had to admit, he was a little relieved to see that Kuu hadn't disappeared off of the face of the earth, either. If he and Elliot got kidnapped while left alone, Isaac would've felt really bad. Sure, they could turn into a street shark and a scythe-fox and beat the crap out of any would-be troublemakers, but doing that in the human world was really risky. Knowing Kuu was okay meant knowing Elliot was okay, and that Isaac wouldn't have to kick anybody's ass for today.

It was certainly a strange sight, watching the fox flail and writhe in some attempt to be released. As the claw finally opened, the Digimon shouted, "yes!" before making several thumps and squeaks as he was dropped down a chute. Not planned for! Ah! Escape! With a roll, the Kudamon flung himself out of the machine, clearly dazed. "Make the world stop," he groaned, swaying a little. Oops, maybe he hit his head during the tumble!
"It looked comfy!" Kuu explained, shaking his head to try to regain what little sense he had. In all fairness, it wasn't much, but he really needed it! As for the question on how he got in there? "I'm magic! Or a Digimon. Fox? Kuu," the little alien nodded, seeming to get sidetracked while looking for an answer. Of course, it was a lot more simple than magic, but he wasn't going to tell anyone!
"You climbed in where the prizes drop, didn't you?" Dang it! Maia knew! So much for being magical and mysterious! The fact that the fox only glanced at her, before refusing to so much as glance in her direction was plenty of an answer for her.
Maia looked at Isaac, trying to shrug. "At least you won something, right?" Did it really count, though? "I mean, you even got the thing that was moving. I'd say that takes skill." At least, that's what she would call it. Skill to collect a fox that shouldn't even be in the machine. Though, if he hadn't, chances were, they'd never have been able to find Kuu later on!
Still refusing to look at his tamer, the fox chirped an, "I'm the best prize, anyway!" Oh, he was certain something!

Isaac thought Kuu was crazy, but for once it seemed like he actually had a point. That pile of big stuffed toys would've been really comfy for someone as tiny as Kuu. Isaac knew if he had a chance to just submerge himself into a giant pile of fluff, he'd likely dive right into it! Wait, was that basically just a beanbag chair made of toys? Because that was sounding exactly like a beanbag chair made of toys. Damn, Kuu was really living the easy life, wasn't he? "Well, I can't argue with that," Isaac figured, shrugging. He still thought it was kind of stupid and dangerous, but at the same time it was probably one of the least ridiculous things Kuu had done.
Still, Maia had a good point as well. He really did manage to pull off something pretty tricky, huh? Today just kept on surprising Isaac with what he was capable of. Maia sure knew how to bring out the best in him. He grinned cheekily as he motioned toward the dazed fox in an overly-grandiose fashion. "Well then, your prize awaits, Mai," he teased.
Kuu's presence raised a few questions, though. "So where'd Elliot run off to, then? Figured you two'd be hanging out for a bit," Isaac asked. Maybe if Elliot was there to vouch for himself, he would've been able to explain all of the tokens he spent trying to get Kuu back out of the machine. It turned out having a renegade Digimon loose inside of your claw machines was actually a really profitable enterprise! However, with Elliot not there to recount that little adventure, it would have to be Kuu's version of the events taken as gospel. This was going to become one real weird story, wasn't it?
