This world was such a hassle, wasn't it? Even in her own world, it couldn't be the same. When someone finds a spider monster in the forest outside of their own house, things could be taken pretty seriously! Somehow, Maia had been able to come out of everything, at least physically unscathed so far! And, here she had thought that moving to Japan would be more peaceful.
"Did you play in the snow, too?" Kuu questioned Valeria, immediately after she was silenced. Oh, was the fox used to that! It was kind of funny seeing someone else being being forced to be quiet for once! It seemed like all of the other tamers just let their Digimon say and do anything they wanted!
The tamer glanced at her Digimon, thinking about what Ami was saying. "I guess that makes sense," she agreed. Though, how a world sends someone a partner and a weird device was beyond her. Then again, this was all data of some sort, right? Was it essentially a sentient program? That was actually a somewhat alarming thought, which the blonde quickly shut down before it could ever reach her mouth.
"But," there was one part of this speech that didn't sit right with Maia. "I don't really know a way to work with him. What does that even mean, really?" She didn't get it. There wasn't much that a human could do to help someone far more resilient. There were those cards, but even then, Maia wasn't entirely confident in their level of help.
Black tipped ears twitched, hearing his tamer's concern. "You threw a rock at that Skull-guy once! That was help!"
Clearly, Maia didn't agree, as her head dropped into her hands. "That was so stupid," she mumbled, embarrassed by the entire situation. Who in their right mind threw rocks at a violent monster, several times their size? "I could have died."
"But, did you?"
There was a small groan that emitted from the girl's throat, before she fixed her hair to keep it out of her face. There was no need to answer the question that the fox posed, considering she was still well enough to be sitting here. Eyes lifted to look at Ami, hearing the suggestions. "I'm pretty sure Kuu will act out no matter what I do."
The rookie nodded rapidly to this. "It's true. I like acting!" What a handful of a monster!

"Oh... when I get the chance, sure! I play in the snow!" My, Kuu was just off in his own little world, wasn't he? The non-sequitur caught the bunny off-guard, a bit of a stunned and embarrassed look on her face at that over-toned answer. Perhaps unfortunately for her, Ami was too caught up in her now-serious conversation with Maia to bail her out.
Because, after all, Maia looked like she needed help. "I really wish it would be just as simple as giving an answer, Maia." Ami sighed, shaking her head. "Nor do I know just how much you know Kuu to begin with. He's actually pretty average for how a Digimon of his age acts. I definitely had at least a few weeks where Valeria acted like nothing but a ball of sugar." Even so?
For this girl to be here for so long, Maia couldn't be as far off as she thought. Even now, Kuu was trying to assure her that this was the right path. He even praised her for acting as she did during a fight. Ami didn't know the details, so she wouldn't dwell on it too much... but perhaps there was a different way to go about this.
"Hey, Kuu?" Looking down at the fox on Maia's lap, Ami gave a smile, a tone of a question in her voice. "You like hanging around Maia, right? Tell me, what is it about her that you find interesting?" Maia's frustrations were well known, but had she even asked this sort of question to the pipe-fox before? "Let's make it simpler: two things. Tell me the biggest two things you like about her." Ami's voice was kind, and not too forceful, but was straight to the point.
A few feet away, Valeria gave a shrug. "Where's she goin' with this..."

Was Kuu actually normal, as far as Digimon went? Most others that she had encountered were at least a little more bearable. Kuro was the most settled down rookie, by far, but nobody else seemed to have the same issues as Maia. Especially when she was usually the only one able to try to reel the monster back in. "It's been months and he's still a ball of sugar."
"I like sugar," the fox chimed in. "And, I don't fly around the house anymore! So I'm not as bad!" At least Kuu knew that was something annoying. And, it really wasn't by choice. If he could still deflate like a balloon, everyone knew that he would still be spazzing around rooms as fast as possible!
Now, the rookie was being addressed by the other tamer. Head tilted to the side, with wide yellow eyes, as he listened to the question. Zero expression displayed on the fox's face, as he opened his mouth immediately after the inquiry, "she's not interesting." Well! Nobody could say he wasn't honest! But, it wasn't a bitter tone he used, at all. It was just very matter-of-fact, and maybe a little confused. Why was he being asked this kind of stuff? "I like that she is warm. And makes me cookies?" Those were two things! Really, his tamer was super boring to him! What was there to pinpoint?
Maia seemed completely unsurprised by the answer, looking to the fox with a dull expression. She had to agree with Valeria's question on this. What was Ami planning on accomplishing?

"Hm... I see..."
Well. That was a little bit away from what Ami expected. As Kuu seemed confused, and Valeria and Maia more-or-less shrugging off Ami's attempt to help, it would seem that the matter was absolutely hopeless between this dysfunctional tamer and partner. If they had been together for this long and were still in this stage, then they would be late-bloomers at best. Perhaps there was some merit in leaving well-enough alone.
"Ya see, Ami, you just drove the conversation into the ground again. Sheesh, you gotta-"
"You two haven't actually talked to each-other at all. Have you?" Ami cut off her partner, as if she had been so lost in thought that she hadn't even realized that Valeria was speaking. No, Ami's focus was definitely on the other two: giving a smile, a sigh, and a shrug, Ami shook her head. "That's it, isn't it? No 'what do you want to do today', no jawing over any old thing... Kuu's been dragging you around, and you're here because... well, maybe you feel you have to be?" Ami didn't wait for an answer, just planting those little seeds of thought into Maia's head. Instead, she reached into her bag, pulling out a piece of paper and a pen.
"Ami, isn't that a little... harsh, for someone you've just met?" With a nervous chuckle, still seeing that same, stoic smile on Ami's face, the bunny gave a small step back. Ami still seemed to pay no mind, folding the paper, handing it off to Maia. "What you need to do for the stew. Ingredients, instructions. And a little online search wouldn't hurt, either." What, she just changed the topic so jarringly?
"A... Ami?"
"Oh, don't worry, Valeria. I'm fine." Ami gave a smile to the rabbit, and kept her kind look, holding the paper towards Maia. "I just can't help someone who hasn't even given this a real try, yet."
Wow.
Not even subtle.

With a tilt of his head, Kuu responded with, "we talk to each other every day!" How could they not actually talk to each other when they hadn't spent a day apart since he had arrived at her house! "Maia asked what I wanted to do today! That's why we're 'sploring!" He couldn't force his tamer here if he tried! And, one would have to trust that he certainly had tried before!
This seemed to just be confusing the tamer, who looked at Valeria for some form of help. She mumbled a, "thank you," while trying to hunt for words. Kuu seemed quick to try to defend their relationship, so Maia didn't even feel the need to. They communicated plenty! Right? "That's, uh, not quite the case?" Uncertainty rang through the awkward girl's voice, searching for a proper answer. Was there really one to give, though? Kuu did kind of drag her around, but only because she let him.
But, something about the final bit caused the blonde to just stare at the other girl. "What do you mean, I haven't given this a real try?" While the voice used wasn't harsh, it also wasn't quite as nervous as prior. Did that strike a nerve? What did a stranger know about Maia and her partner?
Even the Kudamon had stopped his babbling to stare up at Maia. That seemed a little harsh, didn't it? Ears had flattened on the fox, trying to think fast. Soon, he scrambled up, to drape himself across her shoulders, flailing his paws about. "She-" Okay, he was failing to think of a response! Oh no! Panic! Hit all the buttons! Every button ever! Which one would blurt out first? "It's like how I haven't gotten to be a super big Digimon yet! Cause we don't try to do that stuff! It's safe! Uh! Safe! Like not hugging your mom's cactus plant thing! But it tastes so good!" Oops, now he was getting off track! "I don't really get why I can't eat it, though. Cause it's so tasty. Just gotta make it not bite back first." Yup, he'd lost himself in thought about plants. Welp. It was worth a shot while it lasted! "Can I have a pet cactus, Maia? I'll take care of it and only nibble sometimes!"
There was a sigh that escaped the girl, as her Digimon continued to plead about getting a pet to eat. "You-That's," why was it so hard to work with wording right now? "You aren't supposed to eat your pets, Kuu. You can't even find your toy mouse. How can you keep a plant alive?" Okay, good. Somehow the little fox's tangent had prevented some form of confrontation. Maia wasn't a fan of getting irritated with someone that she barely knew! But, she still wasn't entirely sure what Ami had meant from that comment!
"I keep your socks alive! I can keep plants alive!" That was not the best argument to place! Maia couldn't find those supposedly 'alive' socks.
But, the topic still wasn't entirely let go of. Kuu had only deterred the immediate emotion from the subject! Eyes were turned quickly back to Ami, to find a part of what she had said to pick at. "If you're saying you don't feel like you have to be here, why are you?"

Of course, Ami's words would have struck a nerve with any Digimon pair, near-regardless of context. It was what made Valeria nervous, Maia flustered, and Kuu outright defensive. But Ami would listen to it all: perhaps she had read it wrong, and this was just how they liked to be? Somehow, the older tamer doubted it, especially hearing the uncertainty in Maia's voice.
'It wasn't the case.'
'What do you mean?'
No solid examples, just deflection, just avoiding the question... at least, as far as Ami could tell. She kept her smile, as Maia took the paper, asking her questions to Ami. "What do I mean about giving it a try... mmm... well, have you ever given it a thought what you wanted to be in this world? Or, if you prefer, what this world means to you?" It was an honest question, perhaps more level-headed than Ami's previous points, but it still earned a nervous chuckle from the bunny.
Oh, thank god for Kuu! If there was anything good enough to break up the tension, it was this silly, cute fox that Ami had met all of perhaps fifteen minutes ago. He went from trying to defend Maia, to losing his own train of thought and asking about cactus and socks. It was even enough to bring a giggle to Ami: it was cute! And cute was a good way to get on this girl's good side! "Phew." Smiling, glad to have at least a bit of the tension behind her, Valeria's ear twitched. Hearing Maia's newest question, she shook her head with a sigh. "Really..."
"Hm... well, I don't feel I have to be here. Actually, if you want to know? I'm looking for... well, work!" Ami felt a little silly saying that, but went on to explain: "I mean, this world isn't bad, and its a big opportunity opened to us. So I figured, why not try to use what I have, for this world and myself? Right now I'm on-and-off with the mission's guild, and work with a Gatomon doctor to find odd-jobs."
"Yeah... this world's pretty peaceful, as it is right now. No need for huge fighters or anything like that. So it might just be better to try and get by!" Ami's answer was more calm than the bunny expected, so she rolled with it, a surprised, happy tone in her voice!
"Just a matter of looking for it, ya'know? I'm sure something will come to you eventually, Maia."

What would Maia want to be in this world? What? She barely knew what she wanted to be in her own world! On top of that, she felt the same about the second question! The blonde had no idea how to answer any of this. But, Kuu's tangent had thrown the girl's ability to think about the subject completely, and it was fairly forgotten at this point. Well, it seemed his plan had worked!
"Mission guild?" That bit had somehow caught the teen's attention. What kind of missions were posted in this world? It was hard to tell what people would ask for around here! The term also made Maia think of video games, which was a far more familiar topic. If they weren't life-threatening, maybe missions wouldn't be an awful start! "So, do you not, uh," the tamer paused, "go to school or anything?" Maybe Ami was too old for school? She had no idea how old the other girl was, after all!
Valeria discussing the part about the world being peaceful led to another question, though. "Are there times where this world isn't peaceful?" Without being a tamer for very long, Maia hadn't actually seen anything to imply that it wasn't a relatively calm place. Aside from the monsters that attacked on their own accord. It was just kind of like approaching a wild animal, though. One couldn't expect every creature to be friendly!
Kuu puffed his cheeks, sliding off of Maia's shoulders and flopping onto her lap. "We're safe, Mai! Don't gotta ask about past spooks!" It wasn't like Maia would ever allow the pipefox to be a tough figure in a bad situation, anyway! She wasn't the type to be willing to step into conflict like that!

Maia's curious question had brought a smile to Ami's face: "Yeah, mission guild! It's nothing too organized, just a number of job postings and requests in Terminus, Whitewater... pretty much anywhere major. I think it started as just a post-board and developed into this whole... 'thing', I guess."
The bunny cut in on that, all-too-eager to keep the conversation above Ami's previous tone: "Yeah, with how crazy things are over here, you see odd-jobs all the time. Gather some herbs from this particular forest, escort a merchant, ward off monsters... its ranked by how hard it is and stuff. And tamers are in quite high demand!" Mysterious pairs from another world who could create super-powerful Digimon? How could that not draw an eye! But, soon, Maia drove the conversation to a more sensitive point.
School.
"Eheh... well..." Wow, how could she even respond? "Just finished my first year, so I'm kind of on break. But, I figured I'd try things on this end for a while. Not that my grades are all that high with all this Digital World stuff, and cram school's been killing me lately. So, if this all works on this end?"
A pause. "... I'd drop out." These words weren't happy ones, nor any that Ami would take lightly. "I mean, its not like its easy to balance these two lives as it is. If fate's going to afford me a Digivice and all that, maybe I'm meant to take this sort of leap? It's not like I'd cut ties completely with the other world, or anything..."
"Sheesh, you have more thought put into this than most, don't ya? We'll take it as it comes!" Well, that was a bit of a personal tangent! And as to Maia's following question, the rabbit tilted her head: "Isn't it?"
"Think about it, Maia. The cities are mostly peaceful; the wilds and trails are dangerous places where Digimon and humans quickly find themselves in danger. That's pretty much how our world works, too." That much was true, at least! Standing up, stretching, Ami took a quick look up at the sky, checking the time. "Hm... well, I don't want to hold you too long so that you'd miss the next Trailmon. Though you're welcome to stay and camp out if you'd like, or have anything else you want to talk over."
"Ami, I think they might want to just have some time to think, ya'know?"
"Yeah, maybe..."

"Missions could be interesting," the girl murmured, mostly to herself. Though, that felt like a pretty big jump from aimlessly wandering either human or digital world, doing nothing relevant aside from staying alive. Sure, the staying alive part would still sit as top priority in those missions, it would maybe give the tamer a better taste of what this world had to offer! It couldn't hurt, right?
Kuu seemed excited about the concept too, bouncing on Maia's lap. "I bet I could do all the missions!" At once! The Kudamon was perfect for all those jobs! As long as they didn't involve carrying things! Or being giant! Or, uh, flying! Well, that certainly removed his opportunities pretty fast. Eh, whatever, he'd figure out how to do all of those ones, too! With a little creativity, nothing could hold the pipefox back!
Well, it seemed that the subject of school was a sensitive one. Maia should have known! But, it certainly sounded like Ami had put a lot of thought into the entire subject. The kind of thought that, now, she was even thinking about. Of course, Maia couldn't see herself dropping out of school. Sure, her grades were slipping a little, but she was still doing pretty good in her classes! "That makes sense," she finally concluded, with a nod. "I, uh, can't see myself doing exactly the same," the tamer admitted, but there was the additional mumble of, "but, I think I'm better at school than at Digimon." There was little proof to tell her that this assumption was wrong, after all!
With the conversation coming to an optional exit, the rookie's ears flattened, only to perk up again. "I wanna camp! What's camping? Can you eat it?" Yellow eyes turned to Maia, "let's do the camping!"
Why did that become the option that Kuu had to go with? It was hard to let that kind of excitement down! But... "We don't have anything to camp with, Kuu," Maia finally pointed out, only to get a groan from the rookie. They only came to the Digital World to visit during the daytime! It wasn't like it was normal to bring a sleeping bag to someplace for only a couple of hours in the sun!

"Well, it's something for you to consider, at least." At least, as far as the missions were concerned: Maia didn't seem too against the idea, and Kuu, well, Kuu was just a fan of everything! At last, the conversation seemed to be more on the level, or at least, not as personally scathing of Maia's personal life. And as for school?
"Yeah, I wouldn't do anything too drastic. Especially with being relatively new at the whole thing. I mean, you have quite a long time to figure stuff out, so you don't need to rush anything." Ami kept her tone more neutral here, to which Valeria gave a smile. "Yeah! This world's probably fascinating to you, but you can be whatever you want in either world... so I guess it's just something you gotta figure out between you and Kuu!" And that was pretty much all there was to it! Especially if Maia wasn't entirely certain what to think of this world, maybe something in the human side of things would be her calling. Heck, if nothing else, Kuu probably made quite an entertaining roommate.
But unfortunately, the camping thing seemed to stumble on its face. Ami gave a chuckle at Kuu's stifled enthusiasm. "Quite a shame... I don't have anything extra, and no offense, but sharing a tent with all three of you would probably be a little too much. But, um, let's see..." Reaching into her pocket, Ami produced a Japanese business card, for a corner-store bakery, scribbled on the back, and offered it to Maia. "If you need, you can reach me on the bottom number... and the back's my cell. Don't be afraid to buzz, if you need bailing out yourself. Tamers have to stick together, you hear?"
"Yeah. Actually, maybe speed-dial? Remembering a number's pretty hard when being chased down by something!"
"Heh. True enough, true enough..."
That said, there wasn't much else to go on here! "That said, if you two don't start hoofing it? You really will miss that last train!"
