Laying on the bed, Maia sighed, working on one of her many, many sketches. Of course, sketching while on one's back wasn't always the best of ideas, but the girl had perfected using her knees like a table. "Should I try coloring this one?" Maia questioned, shifting to arch her back off the bed, and show Kuu the sketch of.. well, him! It wasn't like she had been given much to work with lately, after all!
"Hm," the little Digimon on the floor tilted his head side to side, making varying hums as he debated. "This one makes me look fat," he complained, scrunching his long body in on itself, to accentuate what he was talking about. "Pick one that I'm making kung-fu moves in!"
"But, I don't like those ones," the tamer countered, rolling back onto the bed properly. "I miss my tablet," she mumbled, erasing part of the body on the picture, to try to fix whatever it was that Kuu was complaining about. "You know you don't have a six-pack, right?"
This made the little monster's ears perk up, as he began scrambling at the edge of the mattress. "I want a six pack! Of soda! Orange, please!" What demands the little digimon gave! Though, that did sound kind of good. Unfortunately, it would also involve going into the kitchen -- one of the places that Maia had been trying to avoid for the past several weeks. After all, that's where her mom liked to be, and after the arguments that had taken away her laptop, phone, tablet, and gaming consoles, the teen wasn't too keen on the idea of talking to her.
"You're just as grounded as I am. No soda for you, unless you can undo talking to my mom," the girl pointed out, irritantly. "Like, two more weeks until freedom. Then, I'll let you have soda."
Of course, this created a large groan from the fox, who began rolling on the floor and making a variety of sounds. But, soon, ears perked again, and the Digimon was at the window, scrambling to try to lift it up. "Maia! We need fresh air! I promise not to 'scape again! Open the window!"
Amber eyes shifted to stare at the monster, before the girl finally lifted herself off of the bed, making her way to the window and placing a hand on it. "If you bolt, I'm going to make sure you don't get soda for at least another month," she warned, before following through with the request from the squealing Digimon.

"You can't be serious."
That had been Elliot's first response when Isaac came up with this plan, and that was his response now as he stood beneath Maia's window. He was clad in a trenchcoat and hat, and currently standing at two feet taller than his usual height. The Digivolution to Strikedramon was fairly blatant, despite his best attempts at disguising it. Occasionally he scratched at his back, which seemed to be bulging due to the way he had to tuck his tail in to avoid suspicion. "How the heck are we supposed to make this work, again?"
Isaac sighed, wondering why such a simple plan was so hard to understand. He'd been over it three times already! "It's super easy. I get on your shoulders. I knock on the window. I visit so Maia's not bored out of her mind up there." He and Maia had been discussing the idea of him sneaking in, sometimes joking and sometimes completely earnest. In this last sretch of the grounding, Isaac figured he might as follow through while there was still a grounding left to defy.
"And the giant in a trenchcoat that's standing beneath her window?"
"You run off and dedigivolve after. Pretty sure there's room in your backpack for that giant coat. But you're right. We gotta be fast because that's gonna be super hard to explain."
Elliot seemed nonplussed.
"Come on, Elliot. Do you know how many stupid things I've done to make you happy? I knocked a guy out with a book for trying to put a hand on you, for crying out loud! I just want to go up there and make Maia happy, because she's seemed really down at school lately. She could use some cheering up, especially to help get her through the home stretch of her grounding. Can't you please just roll with me this one time?" Isaac took a peek at his brother's face, or at least the parts of it that were visible beneath the wide-brimmed hat and popped trenchcoat collar.
While before he had tired eyes and an exasperated frown, now there was a silly smile on his face. "Wow, you really like her, don't you?" Elliot teased. "I never thought anybody would be able to make you act this goofy. And now you're like this every day."
Isaac flushed a little. Even after he and Maia had been together for a while, Elliot still kept teasing him as if they had just hooked up days ago. It was like Elliot had a single-track mind, and it was aimed entirely at taunting him. "Look, I-" He started to redden a little bit more, and his voice took a turn for the quieter. "I really miss her, okay?" His ears perked up as he heard a slight high-pitched noise, and his earnestness immediately gave way to irritation. "Hey! No squealing. I already feel sappy enough about all of this."
Nevertheless, that little bit of emotion gave Elliot all the convincing he needed to help Isaac. He hoisted Isaac high up into the air, causing him to flail slightly from being unprepared. "Warn me next time!" he protested, as Elliot set him right onto his shoulders. For now the duo remained out of sight, only for Elliot to start rising to his full height. Together, the two should have been able to just about reach Maia's window.
Unfortunately, Isaac had probably picked the worst timing for a dramatic entrance. He appeared literal seconds after Maia opened her window, ending up face to face with her instead of being able to knock on her window. Isaac started to blush as he tried to improv up a new direction for the plan, fumbling with the mental cue cards that he had just dropped. "Heh. Didn't expect to see you around here," he joked, smiling at Maia. "Mind if I pop in for a bit?"

His tamer had no faith in him! "I'm not gonna run off," the Kudamon insisted, with a little huff. Nose twitched, as he looked up and around the bedroom, thinking of his excuses. "I just like fresh air."
Maia wasn't entirely buying it, still, looking down to the fox. "Right, I'm sure."
"Also, I really like Elliot."
Wait, what did that have to do with anything?
Eyes turned to look out the window, but instead, Maia found herself staring at Isaac. There was a brief moment of blank-staring, before the fact that Isaac was literally staring at her through her second-floor window had fully clicked into place. Of course, this was met with the delayed gasp of surprise, before throwing a glance back to her bedroom door. It was shut, okay, good.
"Oh-uh, yeah! Sure," the teen finally agreed, not wanting to keep Isaac outside long enough to be noticed. Maia offered her hand, to help Isaac get into the room a little better. Especially given that the desk was a bit close to the window, and she didn't want him to hit himself on it.
In the meantime, Kuu squeezed his face out the window, looking down in Elliot's direction. "You're big today! Hi, Elliot!" Which was quickly followed by a "shh!" from his tamer. "Oh, right! This is secrets, isn't it? I can do secrets! I'm good with them, I swear!" Right. Everyone would surely believe that Kuu was a master of secrets.
Either way, there was probably no going back on this now! Still, the company was much appreciated. "I swear, you're crazy for actually doing this, you know?" But, hey, Maia really couldn't be mad about the visit! After all, she was getting really bored of just sitting in her room all day with a babbling fox!

"You too, Kuu!" Elliot cheerfully smiled in response, waving. Great, now he wasn't Suspicious Guy In Trenchcoat, but Suspicious Guy In Trenchcoat With The Voice of a 13 Year Old. That just raised further questions! Fortunately, it didn't seem like anybody was around to notice or even care.
Speaking of people who really liked other people, Isaac took Maia's hand and smiled at her as she helped him into her room. "Thanks a bunch." he said, reaching into his jacket with his free hand as he rooted around for something.
Elliot looked up at Kuu, laughing a little at his size being pointed out. "Yeah. I'm pretty sure if we tried this the normal way, we would've just fallen over," he explained. "But hey, don't worry. The only secret part is that I didn't want to freak people out, looking like a seven foot dragon man and all. We're fine now." To demonstrate, Elliot walked around the corner, a glow emerging as he hobbled back in his regular form. "See? All good now!"
Isaac smirked at Maia's response. "Crazy about you, maybe," he said. After a bit of digging in his pocket he pulled out a wrapped up box, handing it to Maia with a flourish. "By the way, a little something for you. Picked up a box of chocolates," he added. Of course, he didn't seem to explain why the box of chocolates was covered in wrapping paper, or why the box seemed to be sturdier and heavier than expected. Or why there were protrusions the size and shape of writing implements on the bottom.
Nope, Isaac most certainly did not hide a brand new sketchbook and art set beneath the box of chocolates. Not at all.
Once the gift was given, he leaned back and relaxed while waiting to see Maia's reaction. "So, how're you holding up in the Fortress of Doom?" he asked, genuine concerned mixed in with his joking question.

"Normal's boring, anyway," the fox assured Elliot. After all, what did a talking alien know about being normal? Psh! It was such an overrated word! It wasn't like anything he'd encountered seemed normal as of yet! Bearing in mind that he'd really only been existing in this life for the past... What was it now? Six? Eight? Ah, whatever amount of months it was, it surely wasn't enough to gain a proper grasp on the term 'normal' as far as humanity went!
At this point, Maia wasn't even paying attention to Kuu talking through the window, more focused on whatever it was that Isaac was doing. With a smirk across her lips, the best comeback she could find was, "wouldn't that just make you more crazy?" Then again, crazy circumstances had been what brought them together, right? Funny how things like that worked out. A present certainly wasn't expected, though! Hesitant, the girl stuttered a, "o-oh, you didn't have to bring me anything," before slowly reaching out to take the item. Despite the oddness of the wrapped item, the girl didn't seem to place too much thought into it, absentmindedly playing with one of the edges of the paper.
"Doom is a pretty fitting term," the blonde remarked, "I don't even get to watch television."
Black tipped ears twitched, as Kuu turned to the conversation between the couple, "Maia's mom told her to stop leaving scary drawings in the living room today," he informed, with a giggle. "She doesn't like me! Did you know she thinks I'm scary, too?" That really shouldn't warrant laughter, Kuu! But, what was all that scary about something that used socks as sleeping bags? This brought up the next statement of, "Not-Mom also said I can't sleep in her pillow case." It wasn't particularly surprising to see that Kuu couldn't identify what 'I'm not your Mom' meant, to top this all off. "She makes a lot of rules. They're lame."
"It's your fault, anyway," Maia huffed to her Digimon, who promptly turned back to the window, choosing selective hearing for that moment. Still, fingers were prying gently at the wrapping paper, seeming to have forgotten she was holding it for a moment. Finally, she began to tug at the paper. "I mean, I guess it's not as bad as it could be, but," the tamer trailed off, finally looking at the unveiled items in her hands. How it had gone over her head that she couldn't only be holding a box of chocolates was beyond her, at this point.
Sometimes, Maia just wasn't very perceptive.
Silence seemed to suit her well at this moment. Eyes didn't leave the present, as the girl bit her lower lip. She really didn't know what to say! There was part of her that wanted to sit on the bed with her new items, and the other wanted to hug Isaac. Lowering her head, a small laugh escaping mostly-closed lips. "I hope you know, you're great." Who else would sneak into her house and bring her presents? Finally, Maia decided to move to wrap her arms around the boy in a hug. "This doesn't make me think you're less crazy, though."

Kuu? Scary? Neither Isaac nor Elliot could even imagine that. Elliot found himself starting to giggle uncontrollably, failing to hide his joy no matter how hard he tried to stifle himself. Soon he was laughing into his hand to try and hide it. "How the heck is that possible? You're way too silly," he remarked. Kuu looked more like a tube sock than anything terrifying, and briefly Elliot wondered how Maia's mom would react to anything more intimidating. Sandiramon, for example. Maybe it was for the better that she had been in the dark about the Digital World until now, because Kuu was a way better introduction than most of the stuff that Elliot had seen.
Of course, some of Kuu's actions seemed a little bit line-crossing. Nobody liked waking up to a stranger in their pillow, for example. Some rules just weren't meant to be broken. As he recovered from his laughter Elliot smiled patiently at Kuu, adding "But I'm sure she's not that bad. She's probably just confused, and worried, and a bit overwhelmed. Mine's like that too, and I'm probably gonna be dead when she finds out about all of this." That probably didn't help Kuu with his worries any. Quickly, Elliot tried to switch directions with his reassurances. "Okay, what I meant to say is that she's probably trying her best right now, even if she's kinda freaking out a bit. I bet she'll get used to you soon. And when she's used to you, how could she not love you?" That's better!
Isaac blushed as Maia pulled him into a hug, leaning up slightly to kiss her cheek. "Takes one to know one, eh?" he asked in response to her comment. Sure, he sneaked into her house to bring her presents, but she was someone amazing enough to be worth sneaking presents. Who won the great-off there, huh? 'Sides, you must've been running low on paper lately. I can't just leave you hanging, can I? Thought about trying to sneak you in a tablet or something, but I figured it would've just gotten you in trouble again. Didn't want to risk starting a second grounding."
He parted from the hug and sat down, leaning against a nearby wall. "No TV? Jeez, when she said no electronics, sounds like she really meant it. Been able to get to the outside world, or has it just been you and Kuu against the world up here?"

"Guys, my mom thinks Harry Potter is scary," Maia was quick to quip with. She still wasn't entirely sure how someone like Kuu could be scary, especially when all he wanted was food and snuggles, but the tamer wasn't going to argue with her mom on it more than necessary. And, as far as that went, it was just about any time that her mom spotted the little Digimon. "I think, as long as Kuu can talk, he'll terrify her." And, anyone that knew the rookie would easily know that silence wasn't something he was very big on.
Kuu shot an accusing look to Elliot, despite identifying that the boy was trying his best to make him understand. "She tried to put me in a shoebox without holes in it! It didn't even have the shoes!" Offensive! "And she doesn't try! She just starts fighting with Maia all the time about it! It's mean!" There would be no appeasing the fox at this point. Mess with his tamer, and that meant messing with him! Especially when all of it was his fault for just existing! "At least Dad likes me!"
The teen blushed slightly at the kiss, smiling only more at it. "I can always use more paper," she agreed, looking over the items. While a tablet would have been nice, it probably would have warranted some more yelling, and nobody wanted that. "Yeah, she doesn't even let me answer the house phone now. Entire technology ban." There was a short pause, throwing a glance to Kuu. "And going outside is off-limits, too. Apparently, running around with a 'wild demon', like I have been for months, is just too dangerous." Well, that sounded like a bit of an exaggeration!
"What about you? Have you been doing anything fun?"

Both boys shot Maia incredulous looks over that one. Yes, even Elliot tried to crane his neck up high enough so his disbelief could be displayed. At least Kuu would be able to relay his shock to Maia.
That little tidbit of info certainly helped re-contextualize Maia's mother a bit more to Elliot. Kuu's description of her helped even moreso. Elliot looked down at his feet, sighing slightly as he realized he was trying to help with a situation that he seriously didn't understand. So much for trying to see the best in everybody. He may have been an optimist, but what Kuu was saying just sounded needlessly cruel! "I'm so sorry she does that," he half-said, half-mumbled. "Doesn't she realize she's hurting you? Like, both of you? I mean, I can understand her being worried about Digimon, but shoving you into a shoebox is just needlessly cruel." Seriously, who did that? It'd be one thing to ask him to hide in polite company, but Kuu wasn't even close to shoebox-sized!
Isaac tried to keep a calming grin on his face, but it's clear that what Maia was saying was really starting to get to him. "Once this grounding's over, you can hide out at our place any time," he offered, the tone of his voice a blend of worry and irritation. "Seriously, what's she gonna try and take away next? The exit to your room? Wish you didn't have to put up with all this crap." At this point, Isaac was practically chomping at the bit to ask Maia's mom what the hell she was thinking. Or, at least, he would if not for the fact that it would likely get her in even more trouble.
Why did all of the good plans have to end in 'Maia gets in more trouble?'
"Eh, not really," he replied, shrugging as Maia asked her question. "Same as usual. Mostly still trying to get my footing around here. At least it's been getting way easier picking up Japanese." Suddenly, Isaac stopped to think. "Think if you were going to tutor me, that'd get past your mom's restrictions? Or did we already rule that plan out? I forget.
Anyway, it's basically just been juggling school and Digital World stuff. Kind of falling into a rut, I think. Wish something interesting would happen."
Isaac, never say those words out loud. Nothing good can ever come from them.

"I think Elliot thinks your mom's crazy," the fox announced, watching the boy's expression through the window. "Which. She is. Can you buy a new one, Maia?"
Even if it were that easy, the teen had watched enough sappy movies to find that exchanging parents for other ones usually didn't turn out well. "Sorry, Kuu. If I can't exchange you, I can't do it with her either." With a groan from the fox, it seemed that the subject was settled. Maia was just going to have to keep her mom. Kudamons were certainly non-exchangeable, after all!
Kuu shrugged at Elliot, sniffing, "she's not payin' attention to other people's feelings." While harsh, even from him, it was quite true. It seemed that Maia's mother was only acting on her own emotions over the entire thing. "I'd get it more if I used my attack things in the house, but I don't even do that!" After all, the little alien had already gotten that phase out of the way back when he was a puffball, whose only 'attack' involved flinging himself around rooms like a deflating balloon.
"Worse. She's been trying to make 'family meetings' every morning, so she knows exactly what's going on, in and out of the house." After years of that treatment back in America, Maia was beyond tired of sharing information. "I imagine she will to try to continue them after the grounding ends." Well, at least the girl was already expecting the worst. And, was probably accurate about it.
With the suggestion of tutoring, the tamer shook her head, "then she'll have to meet you. Since you know about Kuu, and I started going outside more because of him," she paused, to see if Isaac would start to see any connection in potentially obviously being related to Digimon somehow. Instead of following that line of thought, Maia ended up shaking her head again, adding, "she's weird about guys, anyway." Probably best not to elaborate on that one, unless she had to!
And, with magic words dropped, Kuu's ears pricked. Black-tipped nose twitched, as he spun to look at the door, "Maia." As with anything that would manage to pull Kuu's attention off of Elliot, this made his tamer concerned. Looking at the door? That really only meant one thing.
Parents.
While Maia took a deep breath, and began inching closer to the door, Kuu was flailing his paws at the window. "Let's throw Isaac out the window! I'll help! It'll be fun! You'll fly, and it'll be fun!" No, that really didn't sound like fun from a second-story window! Bad advice time!
One hand moved to place pressure on the door, helping hold it alongside the frame. "No, that will break bones. Calling an ambulance will only make it worse." And, what a way that would be to meet the parents! Sure enough, without even a knock, the door jerked to open, only to be slammed shut again by Maia's hand. A second attempt was met with the same results.
And now, the person behind the door had a voice. "Maia? What's going on in there?" The worst-case was revealed. Of course it couldn't be her dad that was coming to sneak Kuu snacks! That would have been the least awful experience! Or, at least, it probably would be. At least he didn't yell! Her mom? It was hard to say what would happen if she saw a boy in Maia's bedroom. Especially while grounded.
Leaning against the door now, Maia threw a glance to Isaac before responding, "hold on. Re-arranging some stuff." Yes. Stuff. Not people. Totally re-arranging 'stuff.'

Kuu wouldn't be entirely wrong there. Both Elliot and Isaac were getting quite the bad first impression of Mrs. Maia's Mom Person, who was currently being painted as a control freak for little care for other peoples' feelings. Especially for her own daughter. How could she just not get it that badly? "Or their safety," Elliot pointed out, Kuu being shoved into a schoolbox still firmly in his mind.
Isaac nodded in agreement, a bit cocnerned in his own right. If Maia's mom was trying to make her more well-adjusted, taking away literally every method of contacting her wouldn't accomplish that. This wasn't an attempt to help, just spite. Plain and simple. Having been on the receiving end of many an undeserved spite punishment in his time, that was really starting to get his goat. In particular, the talk of family meetings go him rolling his eyes big-time. "You're probably right. Sure, Elliot and I don't have Digimon to hide, but she'd probably get suspicious anyway. What doesn't she get suspicious over?" he asked.
"Ugh, I really hope those meetings don't last. Like, if you were a kid still, that'd be one thing. But you're 17! You're practically an adult at this point. She can't keep trying to control everything you do." He knew it wasn't as simple as pointing that out and suddenly making everything better, but at that point he just needed to get that rent out. Hopefully, a chance to talk about it would be a bit cathartic for Maia too.
Naturally that chance didn't come, because the woman of the hour herself came knocking. Isaac shot an incredulous look at Kuu for his suggestion, but when he realized how little of the room there was to hide within it almost sounded like an appealing choice. He looked around, trying to find what the heck he could do. Naturally, Elliot had immediately made himself scarce, Isaac noticing a text on his phone saying "Good luck! Have fun!"
"Of course," he muttered under his breath, trying to think of ideas. Maia's closet? No, that was always the first place everyone checked when looking for hidden people. Under her bed? Dust always picked the perfect time to make him sneeze and get spotted. Hang onto the ceiling fan? He had to admit, nobody would think of that. But that was probably because he would die in the process. Time was running out, and he knew he had to think of something so outlandish nobody would ever consider it.
That was why he slid behind Maia's coat rack. A wall of winter jackets and high boots would totally protect him from notice, right?

Maia would have been more than willing to complain more about the situation. Heck, she had even considered running away to the Digital World due to all of this! Except, it really would only make things worse, and the tamer really didn't want to consider an overnight stay in a different dimension. That just sounded terrifying in it's own regards. But, the idea became more prominent over time. Especially considering that not long before 'The Grounding,' she had met a girl around her age that was doing just that.
"Maia! Are you holding the door shut? What are you doing?"
Kuu was already scrambling, taking the presents from Maia's hands, and stuffing them under the bed, while throwing Isaac an incredulous look. "I couldn't be a lamp, but he can be a--"
"Hold on! My room's a mess!" The teen found herself staring at the coat rack, trying to figure out how that was a good idea. Okay, maybe she should have let Kuu jettison a human being out the window. It was certainly a good thing that Isaac didn't need to use stealth skills very often in life! But, did he really have to test them like this? Finally, to add a touch of disorder, Kudamon ran to the trash bin, grabbing the rim of it in his mouth, before dumping various papers, scraps, ink-less pens, and broken pencils all over the floor, splaying them out with his tail. Ah, yes. The mess. Dropping the waste basket on it's side, Kuu hopped to the desk, sitting where a laptop normally would have been.
With the final touches in place, and an irritated groan from his tamer, Maia finally released the door, and stepped away with arms crossed. "Happy?"
Stepping into the room, the woman let out a huff, "you're room's always a mess, anyway. It's no wonder you don't have company over." Uh, no. That's because of the ever-present Mother.
Maia's mom appeared very similar to her daughter, but added several years to the age. Blonde hair was cut to shoulder length, though seemed to be layered much more heavily than Maia's, and held loose curls near the bottoms, which bounced with each step. Sharp green eyes broke the image that could have otherwise been considered somewhat soft, as they brought to focus on the fox in the room.
Kuu had better not ruin anything.
"Hi, Not-Mom!" The Digimon greeted with a wave, and spun to chase his 'tail' dramatically. "I'm helping Maia clean! I'm doing good!" The little monster paused, to look at Maia, and flail a paw, "right, Maia? I help! I'm the best cleaner in the world! You should let me help clean the dishes, and--"
"Stop calling me that." Why was everyone interrupting him today? How rude! "I'm not your mom, or your," there was a pause, as the woman turned to Maia, "I'm not entertaining that thing. Why were you holding the door shut?"
Fists tightened in crossed arms, as the tamer tried her best to bite her tongue. "He's not a thing." Was the best option of lines to come out of her mouth, while still seeming uninterested in answering full questions. "If you don't like to see him, maybe you shouldn't come in my room?"
This warranted a glare from the adult in the room, while she moved to look at the open window. "I'm not the villain here, Mai," she mumbled, snapping the window shut. "You're just making everything more difficult than it needs to be. We could get a cat. Don't you like cats? You don't need to collect wild animals, or make pacts with the devil to have a pet!" To this, a small grumble came from the table, retorting, "I don't even know what a devil is." Of course, this didn't help, but Maia's mom seemed to be getting better at ignoring the demonic voice in the room. "Can't you just be happy with what we have? We buy you anything you want. Is a demon's clutches more important than that?"
Passive aggressive questions seemed to be the main part of the argument that had been held for weeks now. "Isn't there a saying like, 'money doesn't buy happiness' or something?" No response. "When you start something with 'I'm not the villain', it actually does sound like something a villain would say."
"Well-"
"And, when did you become religious?" That was a new one that created a very alarming glare from her mother. "I have never heard you talk about real-life demons until you met Kuu. We've never gone to church. We don't even own a Bible, Mom."
What words were there to combat this? It was true, the family really didn't hold much interest in Faith. With quick steps to the door, the woman muttered, "then I guess we'll just have to go and buy one," before slamming the door shut.
Almost immediately, the teen slumped to the ground, still beside the door, pinching the bridge of her nose. The Kudamon hopped off the desk, to check on his tamer, as she worked to recompose herself. In a way, it seemed almost like she had forgotten the hiding boy in her room. Of course, she hadn't, but it was going to take a moment to remove the stress on her shoulders. "I hate when she does that."

See? Hiding in plain sight always worked! Although it probably helped that Maia's mom, to put it bluntly, was being a complete jerk to her.
What didn't help was that Isaac, so very badly, wanted to tell Maia's mom off for how she was asking. He was practically gripping his knuckles white as an outlet for his irritation, hoping that by focusing all his tension into that simple action he wouldn't be tempted to come strolling out of the coat rack and making this argument worse. Even though he knew it'd just be a headache for Maia, he wanted to desperately to stick up for her and stand by her side.
Maybe that could wait for another day, when she wasn't already trouble. But that didn't make seeing her like this hurt any less.
He sighed as he walked over to Maia, sitting down next to her. If she needed a conveniently placed person to slump against out of despair and agony, he'd be her guy. "Didn't even try to understand, huh?" he asked, tone gentle and worried. He couldn't believe they were still arguing this intensely at all, let alone after whole six weeks of this nonsense. Didn't Maia's mom ever get tired of fighting over something so dumb and try to consider peoples' feelings? "God, I didn't realize it was this bad. I'm so sorry." He was heavily tempted to reach out and hug her, but he didn't want to risk making the first move when the incident was still so raw. He was there for her no matter what, in whatever form she decided that meant. He sincerely hoped that wouldn't be sitting and stewing, though. Sitting and stewing never ended well.
Not that Isaac himself was having much luck there, of course. If Maia took a good look at him, she would be able to notice that he was quite shaken up by this. His big eyes seemed to be quivering slightly, and his brow was constantly furrowed in a mix of contemplation and irritation. His whole body seemed tensed up, making it a wonder he was able to hide even half as well as he did.
"I'm not entertaining that thing." The line was bouncing back and forth in his head constantly. The tone, so dismissive, so uncaring. It reminded him of the night of Elliot's injury. It reminded him of how dehumanized and exiled he felt when the man he thought was his father called him little more but "That boy." The wounds had long become scars, but he could feel them tearing themselves open again. So many words left unsaid. So many things he wished he could've said, were he not so young and confused and frightened. The voice in his head rang crystal clear, even after all these years.
But this wasn't his story. This was Maia's. And for her sake, he would keep it all locked up and wait by her side.
"Do you want to get more of this off your chest? Or are you just looking for a good distraction right now?"

Maia was more than happy about her mother just leaving her alone at this point. A headache had begun pounding at any thoughts that she attempted to form, so instead, she just sat there for a few more moments, even after Isaac had come out of hiding. Well, at least she had never tried to paint her family as perfect.
"They argue like that every day," the Kudamon notified. At first, it seemed pretty alarming, but he was starting to get used to it. Well, no. It was still pretty alarming, but the Digimon was well aware that anything he could do would only worsen the situation. "It's been worse. You could'a heard the screaming, instead!" Not a plus side, Kuu, but nice try!
Finally, eyes would turn to Isaac, after the girl found the air to exhale. "I'm sorry," she mumbled, taking in his appearance. Was he more shaken up about this than she was? Or, had Maia just learned to deal with it? Either way, that was a terrible first impression for her mom. Looked like introducing Isaac to the family was probably best to be put on a serious hold. Not that it was really on the table at the time being. "I-I'm fine, really," she finally decided, after a brief mental debate. Talking things through would probably just make her more irritated. And, while distractions were great, she couldn't think of what one would be. Then again, that was probably the point in a distraction.
Kuu's head lifted from the two, to look at the door again, mouth opening only in time for it to swing open, revealing that the argument was not, in fact, over. "Actually, no. You're going to pay for that book with your own money, because you need a lot of J--" And, that was when Maia's mother had fully entered the room. Eyes dropped to the group on the floor, as she seemed to be at a loss for words again.
"Oh," Kuu pointed out in a deadpan tone, while his tamer took in the situation, "she does that a lot, too."

Isaac cringed at the idea of the screaming. That wasn't the screaming yet? How bad did it get? It broke his heart knowing that this was basically Maia's life at this point, at least for the new two weeks. But how much longer after that?
Part of him wanted to blame the Digital World for being such a source of strife for the two, but it had also been the source of so many great things. Could he really be upset about that? He'd just have to accept everything for what it was, good and bad and all, and try to make a difference on a personal scale. Life was life, and that was all there was to it. Even if it didn't make him any less infuriated and driven to scream at the injustice.
Hearing Maia apologizing snapped him out of it. He shook the worry, even if a guilt rose to took its place. Now he was worried his reaction was just going to make things worse. Hell, had he even told Maia about the man he refused to call father yet? There was no way she could've known it would've stung him that badly. He mustered up a warm smile, assuring her "There's no need to be sorry. I'm fine, too."
It was a lie, of course. As blatant as Maia saying that she was fine. But neither of them seemed to want to talk about it, so why push the issue? They could just sit there, not feeling great but at least lucky enough to feel less-than-great together.
And then back came Maia's mom, with the burn of the century and a desire to make this argument much less than over. At least she was quieting up this time, but it was the reason why she fell silent that got Isaac worried. Namely, the fact that she was looking right down at the two of them.
Isaac was fully prepared to die today. He'd have "Elliot, you goddamn traitor" inscribed on his headstone.
At first Isaac basically stared in silence, looking for all the world like a crashed computer. However, a plan started to form in his head about how to best go around this. In a move that would probably make Kuu think he had a deathwish, Isaac walked up to Maia's mom with a placid smile on his face. He bowed politely to her and began pulling together some of the best damn Japanese he had spoken. "Hello, Mrs. Quinn. It is my pleasure to finally meet you," he said, doing his best to balance speed and fluency. "My name is Isaac."
How could anyone be upset at their daughter dating such a perfect gentleman? And how could anyone not be upset at starting arguments in front of him?

As Isaac was about to rise to the challenge of not getting them all killed, Kuu leaned forward to whisper, "dibs on his socks when he dies." This, of course, prompted a, "shh!" from his tamer, and a soft push. At least someone could have a sense of humor during this moment! Even if it wasn't necessarily a joke. No, Kuu really wanted those socks. Even if they did probably smell beyond awful!
Maia's mother seemed to mull the situation over, listening to the boy's introduction. Lips pressed tightly together, trying to debate if this was a demon fox's illusion, or if it was truly a human boy. Eyes turned to Maia for this, as she remained sitting on the ground, in some level of distress. "Isaac," she repeated, looking to the boy after realizing her daughter would be completely unhelpful in this situation. Why did the name sound familiar? Ah, it had been mentioned before! But, how did she know this wasn't some sort of weird monster-trick?
Also, why was he shorter than her daughter? That seemed odd, unless he was far younger. Still, this gave the perfect point to sternly glare downward at him, which likely wouldn't have been much of an option otherwise. It wasn't like Mrs. Quinn was much taller than her child! "Are you some sort of fox magic?" How would a scary stare be able to identify such a thing? Or, was a teen's formality making her think that this was all some sort of trick? Maybe, she would actually make the demon's illusion go buy a bible, to prove that it was pure!
"Mom," Maia finally groaned, "stop. You're being more embarrassing than usual."
That seemed like a very teenage thing to say.
Which was enough to put a hold on that interrogation. Now, the stern expression began to falter. She was questioning herself! Was the woman seriously looking like a moron in front of another human being? "Isaac," the adult's voice sounded a little softer, albeit still incredibly suspicious. "Maia has told me... absolutely nothing about you!" Oof. Okay, maybe it wasn't as soft as it started out. "Care to fill me in on why you're in her bedroom?"
