Maia's father seemed a little surprised at the interest placed in himself. Honey eyes turned to the boy, while he leaned back in his chair a bit. "Interpretation and translation, mostly," he stated, which was probably a more official way of stating his job. But, for the fact that he was telling a teenage boy, who probably had no idea what that meant... "I work for a company that does a lot of business overseas. I help translate the paperwork, write the text for their webpages in some languages, and when there are meetings with clients," he paused, thinking over what he was saying. "It feels more welcoming to have someone capable to accommodate, when a second language isn't always an option on their end."
Well, that was enough talking for the usually quiet father figure, as he let his wife take the reigns. After all, she was the one that invited the boy to dinner! "Seems a bit unorthodox," the woman commented, in regards to the entire moving situation. Still, she was finding various things to busy herself while she waited for the food to finish cooking. "But, a mother does what she has to." With that, eyes shot to stare at her own daughter, who promptly ignored the obvious attempt at another meaning to her statement.
Looking to the two that were still signing, the woman let out a loud sigh, "and anything for the mutes?"
"Dad wants herbal tea," was the immediate answer, though not seeming to be much of a request rather than a statement. "If you're going to make it, I'd second that." Of course, with Isaac in the room, the mother was unlikely to turn down any demand. After such an awful first impression, what better way to make it up? Still, Maia paused to look at Isaac, "we have soda, if you'd rather." It wasn't like he knew what was kept in the house!
After a pause, the girl found herself huffing, and signing something to her dad with an irritated expression. At this point, the topic at hand had turned to Maia's absolute inability to read maps, and apparently not being able to follow simple instructions. Surely, something had to lead to a conversation like this. Such as getting lost on the way to the store.
Kuu took this opportunity to whirl up Isaac's chair leg, and whisper, "I hope you didn't want to look cool in front of Dad." Without any context, this made for an awful statement! It sounded purely innocent, but the fox had been keeping up with the conversation, where as he expected that Isaac had not! He had to give fair warning!
Maia's mother could be seen stiffening, as Kuu was far too close to the company. Still, she tried to maintain some sense of dignity throughout it. Primarily in the form of not screaming! "Right! So, tea and," she paused, looking to Isaac. "You're sure you want water, Honey? We have milk, cola, tea," there was another hesitation, not wanting to pressure the boy from his decision, but also seeming to want to get out of the room with the talking fox. "You can choose whatever you'd like."

That was very interesting, and a more general-based job than Isaac had suspected. But then again, Maia's dad really didn't seem much like a KGB superspy after all, so that idea was tossed out the window as soon as it was brought up. Still, with a job that wasn't weirdly Russian-themed, it made Isaac wonder how many languages Maia's dad could speak. It was currently at least four, and Isaac had the feeling that was only the tip of the iceberg. Elliot would've found the guy amazing for sure. "That must take a lot of hard work and talent," Isaac observed, smiling.
For a brief moment, a pang of insecurity hit him as he realized that he really had no idea what he wanted to do with his life in the future. Being distracted by a constant barrage of life or death situations made settling down and planning quite difficult. It didn't help that he was maybe half the student Elliot was, at best, and by far the brother with the less bright looking future. When people around him were finding real cool jobs and talents, was he doomed to just get left behind in the shuffle?
Not that the shuffle was the only thing Isaac was getting lost in. Context clues and the few words he knew were helping him put together what Maia and her dad were talking about, but it was Kuu's statement that ended up proving his suspicions right. It took a bit for him to process just what Kuu meant, but when it hit him he blushed a furious red. Seriously? They were doing this? And not even in a way he could understand? When it seemed like both of them wanted to put that story behind them, it felt a bit irritating and a lot embarrassing having it brought up in that kind of context.
Nevertheless, the flush faded as quickly as it came. Hearing the request from Maia's mom brought Isaac back to earth. Both she and Maia seemed intent on suggesting other drink choices for him, so at this point he figured it wouldn't be rude to ask for a non-water. "Actually, I think I'll have some herbal tea as well, please," he added. Soda was always a good choice, but he could have that anywhere. Homemade tea? Quite the rarity in his home, and with how mom-ly Maia's mom seemed he had a feeling she was good at making it.

Shrugged, Maia's father simply answered with, "it's not hard, once you get the hang of it." Of course, a grown man would think that, though! He had years of experience. It wasn't hard once one already knew what they were doing!
"Well, it's certainly not easy," Maia was quick to quip. She couldn't even figure out Italian, and that looked pretty normal compared to everything else! Surely, the girl was just doomed to fail. With a bit more fussing, silently, between father and daughter, the girl also added an apologetic, "just one more minute," before continuing on some sort of explanation to her father.
But, once her mom had received the request for more tea, and had left the room, hands stopped moving. Of course, neither were aware that any of the conversation had been understood, aside from the possibility that Kuu was trying to translate, but he hadn't really spoken enough for either to gain that idea. "From what I understand from all of this," the man cleared his throat, "Maia wouldn't let you come over if you weren't already aware of Digimon." Well, that was pretty obvious. It was the main reason none of Maia's friends from school were never invited over! "Should I assume that you have a 'partner' of your own, then?"
Now, it was hopefully becoming clear why Maia and her dad had requested tea. To make it, it should have given enough time to put aside any curiosities her father may have on Isaac, without needing to tiptoe around a mother's paranoia. After all, she was doing alright with the boy now, but if she found out he was actually associated with these demons? That would be awful!
But, there were questions, and a man needed his answers. With any luck, it would be some sort of response that he'd approve of. After all, if anyone's opinion on a boy were to sway Maia, it had to be her dad's, right? Or, maybe that wouldn't even alter her opinion on Isaac. But, he needed to make a good first impression on at least one of the parents!

Maybe Maia's dad was right. After all, Isaac was currently getting competent in a second language and grasping the basics of a third. But when one of those was due to living in Japan for months and the other was for the sake of impressing his girlfriend, it was far easier to find motivation than normal. It crossed Isaac's mind that, if he put that much work into all of his studies, he could actually do a lot better in school. Then again, when he was going to be the silver medal to Elliot's gold regardless, why bother?
Oh well. At least today had gotten him thinking.
Just like he was thinking about the signing currently going on. This was way less easy to follow than the last part, but that might have been because getting lost was an incredibly easy topic to latch onto. It was one of the most important things to say in any language, after all, and therefore one of the few sentences that Maia said which he had any real understanding of. The only way he would have understood more clearly would be if Maia started by introducing herself in a stilted fashion and ended by asking where the bathroom was. The more common words Maia was using seemed to be for explanation, judging by the "like"s, "so"s, and "why"s in her speech. He even tried to repeat a few of the simpler sentences to himself, trying to see if any definitions would be jogged, but stopped quickly when he realized that je might have been noticed.
And then Maia's mother left, and the questions began anew. He had a feeling Digimon would come up sooner rather than later, but he didn't expect it to be quite this sudden. Maia's father had a very good point, too. With Kuu being Kiu, Maia really couldn't have the same relationship with friends out of the loop that she could with other tamers. It wasn't like Kuu would do much hiding, after all. Briefly Isaac wondered if things would be the same between Maia and him if Digimon weren't in the equation. Would they even be able to have a proper relationship if he was in the dark? Heck, would she even want pne if that was the case?
There was the stage fright mounting its head, any doubts he had magnified by his time under the microscope. Why the heck was he letting these thoughts get to him? He was great! Or at least decent. These insecurities had no bearing in fact, just little shadows and what-ifs that came to his ear, whispered a bit, and ran away while giggling at his misfortune. They were immaterial. They were nothing. And he wasn't going to let a few worries he's dealt with since childhood get in his way. With a decisive thought he pushed them from his head, or at least into the meat locker of bad opinions.
"I don't have a partner of my own, no. But both my brother and I-" Okay, so maybe not all of the insecurity was gone. Bringing up being a spirit user was always the hardest part about discussing the Digital World, and something Isaac often flip-flopped between finding cool and finding kind of embarrassing. Telling your girlfriend's father that you were a shape shifter? One if the more embarrassing ends of the deal. But if he wanted to truly thrust off any shame and feel comfortable about this dinner, he'd need to come clean.
"They're Digital Monsters, right? Well, I don't know fully how it works, but the same device Maia uses to talk to Kuu lets us load old data and briefly take its form. So I guess we're our own partners, really. If you're wondering how Elliot got so tall, that's why." Ha! That sounded way less weird and creepy than "some days I'm a 3 foot demon, and some days I'm a giant snake monster." He didn't elaborate, in case Maia and Kuu didn't fill her father in on the rest of the Digital World, but he already had an idea of what to say if Maia's father had heard about her adventures.
Sometimes, owning it felt way better than hiding it.

Maia looked to Isaac, curious of what he was going to answer with. It wasn't her question, so she wasn't going to say anything for him, though she had to feel pretty bad that it was basically 'interrogate Isaac' day. Really, he kind of looked like he was in his own world. This forced-dinner thing was pretty awful. With any luck, the boy wouldn't hold it against her. Not that it was her fault to begin with, as far as being trapped at a table with parents went. But if she had just kept better control of where Kuu ran off to, none of this would be happening.
Listening to the explanation, Maia's father seemed to be debating if he was going to accept this answer. Looking to his daughter, she summarized the explanation into two motions. One, seemed as though she was pulling something from her other hand, while the other was a more circular motion. Spirit User.
To this, there was a nod of understanding. But, this put a new perspective on the little that Maia had informed him on that particular subject. After all, she wasn't a spirit user! There was no need to tell him a whole lot about them! He had to admit, though, the father wasn't entirely certain that he was enthused about the potential reckless actions that his daughter's boyfriend could commit, considering he had been told that Digimon fight.
"I figured that you were going to tell me that you call your partner your brother." Which may have been a bit of a stretch, but it made the most sense to him. There was no way that someone just naturally got that tall, right? Well, okay, it was possible, but that seemed awfully unlikely. Regardless, telling people that the tall guy helping him out was his brother would make everything so much easier.
This was leading up to another question, as the man looked to Kuu, then to Isaac. "Are you putting Maia in any danger with this?"
Now, this warranted a, "Dad!" The teen wasn't enthused about always being considered the liability when it came to this! She couldn't do anything, but it didn't mean she had to be the main risk factor, right? It must have been Insecurity Hour in the household, considering how the tamer was feeling at this point.
"It's an important question." After all, Maia would always tell her father that she was fine. If she came home with her arm broken, she'd tell him that she was fine and try to go to her room without any attention. Why would this be any different?

Isaac had a feeling he just learned two new words, judging by the signs Maia made and how they lined up with her father's new understanding of the situation. He'd have to keep that one in the back of his mind for later, in case he ever needed to add "I am a spirit user" to his stilted sign language introductions. That said, he could understand where Maia's dad was coming from with his own explanation. It was a pretty astute observation, even if in this case it wasn't exactly accurate. "If that was my partner, I'd hope he could shrink," Isaac joked. Well, only half-joked, considering that most Digimon had default forms way smaller than a Champion-level Spirit User.
And then came the most important question. The second the conversation turned to Digimon, Isaac knew it was coming. Whereas before he might have been too embarrassed to address some questions head-on, now he was looking Maia's father earnestly in the eye. "I can't lie. The Digital World can be dangerous. For the most part it's fine if you stick to residential areas, but if you go exploring you can end up getting a little in over your head. Just by nature its a risk, even if it's also a really cool place to go.
But I can promise you, I would never dream of putting Maia in danger. In fact, I've promised to keep an eye out for her and keep her safe whenever we go to the Digital World together. I'll be honest, if I did get her hurt I'd never forgive myself for it. Maia's really important to me, and I'd feel awful knowing I had part in causing her trouble." This time, even as Isaac's face flushed, he spoke with an unshakable confidence. The fear of Maia getting hurt and the fear of Elliot getting hurt were basically the two driving forces behind his time in the Digital World, and even painting that hypothetical today was breaking his heart.
However, he knew Maia hated feeling like a burden. She probably wasn't enjoying this dinner much, either. He had to say something for her sake, too, when she had been standing up for him. "And that's not to say Maia always needs me helping her. She's really clever and resourceful. And she always keeps a cool head, even when things start to get dangerous. And that's not even getting into how helpful Kuu has been. I know I've promised to protect her, but when it comes down to it we're a team above all. And it makes me really glad to know I can rely on her, just like she can on me."
Okay, so maybe he answered more than just the question there. But he hoped he was at least able to help better explain the Digital World and its dangers.

"I get this feeling that neither of you visit for the residential areas," the man commented, lifting an eyebrow. He had been told stories. There was no way they were in 'safe' areas. The only thing safe was some sort of noodle shop that Kuu was absolutely obsessed with, for some reason or another. Even then, the father suspected that the duo didn't only visit a completely different world for noodles. That would just be... well, weird.
If only he knew that it was actually accurate.
Hearing that his daughter was actually helpful in these situations only seemed to draw more skepticism. "She threw a rock at an aggressive monster's face. I do not think that would classify as clever."
"That's the resourceful part," the tamer huffed, crossing her arms. Okay, so that really wasn't her best moment. Why did she tell her dad about that one? "It, uh... It worked, alright?" Well! It had! Even if it was incredibly stupid! And, it wasn't like Isaac had been there for that situation. Hell, had she even told him about that moment? If she hadn't, it was certainly out of the bag now.
Still, it was flattering to hear how Isaac seemed to find the girl important to the team, somehow. Even if it really was just because she could help Kuu evolve. If only there was more that she could really do, but what could a human actually be capable of in the Digital World? She couldn't do anything about Digimon bursting through portals in the human world, either.
And, at that moment, Maia's mother re-entered the room, with a container of tea. "Who are we protecting, now?" It seemed that she had caught the very end of the conversation, but luckily, not much more.
"Discussing hypotheticals. Nothing important," was the quick-thought answer that her husband provided.
Pouring the tea to each of the set places, the woman hummed, "you'd better not be talking about Zombie Apocalypse plans again. I've told you a thousand times, it's not dinner appropriate!" Who wanted to hear about brains and guts at the table? She certainly didn't! And, once they had moved to a new country, where guns were less easy to come by, the plans only became more graphic! At least shooting things seemed a little less descriptive! "They get carried away sometimes. If it ever bothers you, just let me know. I'll make them stop rambling." Well, at least someone was concerned about Isaac's comfort!
Given, Maia really was worried this was just too many questions, but what was there to do? She couldn't really tell them to stop talking to the extra person at the table! Instead, she shifted to nudge his foot with her own, looking over to the other teen. "Doing okay?"

Damnit, he was completely right! Isaac smiled sheepishly at the comment from Maia's father. "Well, you got us there. But I mean, sometimes we do. Or at least, it's the kind of thing I'd like to do more of at some point. I've heard there are some really nice beaches around the Southern Tropics, if you're up for that kind of thing," Isaac said, briefly diverting from the topic to bring his suggestion up to Maia. Still, he had a very good point. The Digital World's residential areas really weren't the parts they cared about. At least on Isaac's end, Shibuya was enough of a new adventure. Replacing the people with tiny dinosaurs and letting the trains talk didn't really make the city any less of a city. In fact, it just made the city parts all the more inconvenient. He wasn't sure Maia's reasons, but then again she didn't seem keen on going into the Digital World in the first place. It seemed more something she did for Kuu, and he rarely seemed the type to stay in one place for long.
Maia had mentioned offhandedly doing stupid stuff in the past, but throwing a rock at a hostile Digimon? That was a new one. Maia bounced back from her dad's comment fairly well, but it still left Isaac confused as to how she thought that was even remotely a good idea. They were just teens, though. Their plans couldn't all be highlights. "I mean, I've had my share of dumb ideas, too. Pretty sure you've heard at least a few of them-" Was that a slight knowing tone to his voice? "-at the very least, from Kuu.
That said, Maia's been surviving like a pro up to this point. And unlike me, it isn't like she can just transform and fight for herself. So that means she has to be doing something right. Or, more accurately, a lot of things right." Boom! Checkmate!
Or at least, Isaac hoped it would be. Maia's mom was heading back into the room, and that meant he had to quickly zip his lip about that topic. He shot Maia's father one last look, a little plea to believe in Maia, before turning back to the conversation topic about to take precedence. Namely, a conversation topic about other conversation topics. "What? You guys usually talk about zombie apocalypse plans? Boy, did I pick the wrong day to show up," Isaac said lightheartedly. Part of him was just joking around, but part of him was curious what kind of ideas Maia had whipped up. She didn't seem too violent, but that probably just made her inevitable master plans all the more shocking."Thank you for worrying, but I'm fine with it. After all, it's not rambling when it's interesting," he added, shooting a smile Maia's way.
As she nudged him, he turned to her to respond. "Oh, definitely! Your parents are really nice," he said. "How about you?" The second half of that question, "doing better?", was allowed to hang unspoken. Even when he was spending most of his time in the crucible, he couldn't help but worry about earlier this afternoon.

Thinking about it, the duo hadn't been to the Southern Tropics at all, to their recollection. Maia was relatively quick to state, "I do like the beach," only trailing off to avoid sounding like she was going to put pressure on the event happening. After all, Isaac was probably busy enough! She didn't need to make him set aside special time to go to a beach, in the case that he was just trying to provide ideas of safe alternatives to her father.
"I'd do the rock thing again, though," was a low grumble that came from the teen, while Isaac was trying to make her look a little less dumb. She'd have thrown rocks at BlackWarGreymon, if it wouldn't have just gotten her stepped on! But, it was still really stupid, and not necessarily something that she was proud of. Come on, rocks? Couldn't she have found something else to be more useful?
Kuu, still attached to part of Isaac's chair, added, "humans do stupid things to protect things they care about." Strangely accurate insight from an insane fox! "They need to learn to come back as eggs, like everything else does." Less accurate. Worth a shot! What, other than Digimon, had found some way into a clear reincarnation cycle?
Maia's father gave no indication on if Isaac had sold him on the subject. After all, he'd been keeping the Digimon thing a secret from his own wife for months, without deterring Maia from doing her own things. That had to mean something, on it's own. She was almost a legal adult, after all. It wasn't like she was a child.
"Just don't show up when the apocalypse happens, without texting first," the girl teased, lightly. But, it looked like their plans were still secret! Darn. Isaac wasn't going to get to hear their survival ideas. Luckily, that didn't seem like much of a probability. And, with Kuu present, it was probably much easier for the household to survive. Could Digimon even be infected with zombie diseases?
With a shrug, Maia's mother mumbled a, "I suppose, if you think it is," before going to check on the food in the oven.
The teen thought about a response, before shrugging again. "I'm fine, as long as you are." After all, there was no more yelling! A lack of yelling was always a good thing. And, everyone knew that dinner tables were the best place to host a fabulous screaming match.
Returning to the table, Maia's mom fixed her sweater again, "not ready quite yet," she informed, before taking a seat. "So, Isaac. How many other girls have you been serious enough about to meet their parents?"
This prompted an immediate, "Mom!" Why were these people her family? That was way too invasive of a question!
To this, she only got an innocent expression from her mother. "I'm just curious!" Agh! Too curious!

"Excellent," Isaac said, smiling warmly. That'd be one date at the beach to be scheduled next time they were free. Maybe he'd suggest it for when Maia was ungrounded, as sort of a celebration of her freedom. He wasn't sure quite yet, especially when Maia didn't really have a phone for easy texting. He could always try and discuss the idea at school, at the very least, but then people would raise so many questions. Like "the beach, now?" and "what beach is even near Shibuya?" Oh well. He was sure he'd figure something out, if only because Maia was worth it to him.
Kuu's insight was surprisingly active, and probably described 99% of Isaac's trip to Shibuya so far. Did he even need to get into the time he faced down a bunch of punks armed with a Monster Manual just because one laid a finger on Elliot? If anything, that was the real reason why he was so confident in his ability to protect Maia in the Digital World. He would go to any length, no matter how stupid, to make sure that nothing harmed her. "Amen to that," Isaac said to Kuu, resisting the urge to snicker a bit. "Well, the first part of that, at least." Isaac didn't want to be hatched. That would just be super weird!
If Kuu almost got him giggling, Maia just tipped him over the edge. Isaac made sure to stifle it quickly, but he couldn't help but laugh at her comment. Had Maia's mom not been in the room, he probably would've made a joke about how he'd hope she wouldn't be grounded during it. Instead, he simply said "I'll keep that in mind. I like keeping my brains where they matter."
Maia's comment was interesting to Isaac, and it seemed like it would've started one of those chains of concern where he was okay if she was okay, and she was okay if he was okay, and then they spent the night worrying about each other in the back of their minds. But hey, he had his anxieties and she had hers, so it seemed like attracted like in that regard. At the very least, they were both here. And they were both okay. That was what truly mattered in Isaac's eyes.
And then Maia's mom dropped one whammy of a question. In all of his thoughts about tiptoeing around the Digital World, he forgot to watch out for the completely obvious mom questions. His face flushed hotly, not from inability to think of a response but from the sheer boldness of the question. At least Maia had called her out on it almost immediately, but now Isaac could practically feel everyone's eyes on him. Was this the part where he was going to be judged super hard? Because Isaac felt like it was that time.
"Well, none," he said, voice slightly sheepish. "Really, Maia's my first girlfriend."

Hatching from an egg wasn't weird! If it meant getting to continue on with one's life, it was totally worth it! At least, from the perspective of a creature that didn't know a lifestyle that didn't involve breaking out of eggs after probably-traumatic experiences. Oh well! Maybe humans didn't do the egg thing because they thought it was so weird. Kuu figured it was all a decent trade-off! A little bit of dignity, for a much longer life!
Maia found herself smiling at Isaac's attempt to silence any laughter that wanted to escape. "I like your brains where they are, too," she murmured, while Kuu simply stuck his tongue out at the comment. As far as the Digimon was concerned, that was totally an affectionate statement of some sort, and nobody liked those! Ew. Affection!
While her father was about to clear his throat, Maia's mother found the opportunity to reach over and shove the man's chair a bit. "Opinions to yourself," she hissed, knowingly. This only warranted a grunt from her husband, as he tried to think of ways to be very "Dad"-ly about all of this boyfriend stuff.
But, both parents grew silent with Isaac's reaction. Maia was busy burying her face in her hands, trying to cover the increasingly red color, while mumbling, "why?" to herself. Why did parents have to ask questions like that? 'Curiosity killed the cat,' after all!
...Then again, the ending to that saying was, 'and satisfaction brought it back.'
And judging from that squealing sound that was somehow coming from her mom, she was very satisfied with this answer. Was that a sound of terror, or shrill of delight? Ugh, it was certainly headache inducing, whatever it was! Even Maia's father had enough of it, waving his book at her in some attempt to make the woman just stop. "You're going to break the windows if you keep that up."
Kuu was cringing at the sound, ears flattening. "Malfunctioning! Malfunctioning! Reboot her! Quick! Reboot!"
Finally, the sound stopped, with Maia's mother rapidly tapping her fingers on the table, "did you hear that, Maia?"
"I don't think I can hear anything ever again."
While the tamer tried to hide further into her hands, and now her arms, her mom continued this strange level of excitement. "Isn't that so cute?" Oh, God, why? "That's the sweetest thing!" Now, she turned to her husband, who also was not sharing this happy moment with the woman. "Don't you think it is?"
"Better than the alternative," was the un-enthused answer from the half-deaf husband.
The killjoys seemed to finally get through to the mother, as she finally seemed to settle down. Now, she tried to wave a dismissing hand in Isaac's direction. "Don't let him get you down. He's just embarrassed that he married me."
"That's a trap."
There was a pause, as what her mother had said fully clicked in, and then the woman huffed at her husband. "T-that's not what I meant! I meant that I was your first girlfriend!" Well, that seemed like some very important clarification. "It must just be the woman's job to know how to run a relationship!" Oof. That was not thoughtful wording!
Still, Maia was trying to melt into herself. "I'm sorry. This is my family." Why must it be her family, though? Couldn't she have a normal mom that thought before talking?

Maia's mom just squeed. For a woman whose introduction to Isaac might as well have been introduced by the theme from Terminator, that was something Isaac never could have expected. She seemed a lot less threatening now, but Isaac was never the kind of person to fully let his guard down. Even as he relaxed to enjoy the dinner he kept the argument from prior in the back of his mind, hoping that eventually something could be said to sway her mind about Maia and Kuu. Or, at the very least, that he could score a good impression and get to visit Maia more over these next two weeks. Anything to make her situation at least a bit better.
Once Isaac's ears stopped ringing from the sheer force of that squeal, he tuned back into the conversation. It seemed that Maia's parents were in the same boat, except they actually went the distance and got married. Was Maia's mom already hearing wedding bells? Then again, judging by her comment about women running the relationship, it seemed like for her own wedding she needed to take those bells and drag them right up to the altar. Isaac had the feeling that the two were high school sweethearts of a sort. Now he was actually kind of curious about how they met. Besides, this would be a wonderful opportunity to get the heat off of Maia for a bit. Judging by the fact that she was already apologizing for her family, she clearly wanted out of the spotlight.
"Hey, don't worry about it. Its actually kind of nice," he assured Maia. Was it embarrassing? Very. But it was also a feeling Isaac hadn't known for a while. Even during the years when he did have a full family, it was one he never felt a part of. Compared to that, a little bit of excitable momliness and grumpy dadliness was kind of nice. "So, how did you two meet?"
The good news was that at least Maia couldn't be directly embarrassed right now. The bad news was that he was gambling with dangerous levels of potential secondhand embarrassment. He could only hope their story would be noncontroversial enough to give poor Maia a break.

The tamer lifted her head up, to look at Isaac. "How is this nice?" Maia certainly couldn't see a nice part about this! But, maybe she just took it for granted. After all, it was still a family. And there would be dinner. Those were things that not everyone had, right? Still, it was a good time to continue hiding her face, and trying to learn how to become invisible.
After settling down, Maia's mother was quick to dismiss the subject turning to herself, "oh, you don't want to hear about that," she laughed, softly. "That's just boring." Weren't most stories actually really boring? It wasn't like it was going to be something ridiculously romantic, after all!
"Her roommate introduced us at a party."
This seemed to unsettle the room, as the woman looked around awkwardly, and Maia lifted her head again. "That's not what Mom told me. She said you were lost at her college."
This warranted a snicker from the man, as he shot his wife an interesting look. Really? Was it that embarrassing? "I was hardly lost. Art Nerds throw the best parties." It was probably impossible for Maia's mother's eyes to grow any larger without falling out of her head, as she immediately began reaching to hit the other adult's shoulder. "Forgot," he chuckled, "she doesn't like being called an Art Nerd. It's how I got her attention so well the first time, right?"
"Hush! That's not a good story!"
With a shrug, the man quipped, "you're the one that wanted to hear all of their stories. I thought we were sharing. Like the part where you drank too much, and I had to--" Between the hitting, and his own laughter at the entire ordeal, Mr. Quinn simply began shaking his head. "Another time, then!"
With another huff, Mrs. Quinn tried to regain her composure, "I can't believe you'd tell them that. It's just not appropriate!"
Kuu tilted his head, listening to the conversation, seeming a little lost. "I like parties." Any party that the fox was familiar with was probably a little different! He was most likely thinking birthday hats and cake. Which, everyone needed to like cake. It only made sense!
Now, it was the mother that was embarrassed, as she stood up from her seat. "I'm going to check the food now," she notified, before spinning to her husband, pointing a finger, "and no finishing that story!" Maybe, that story was going to get her husband grounded, too!

Isaac elected not to respond to Maia's question at this point. On one hand, Maia's mom was about to start talking, and it would've been pretty rude to interrupt her. On the other hand, Isaac wasn't even sure that was a subject Isaac felt comfortable talking about, let alone when at family dinner. Maybe he'd tell Maia later, but this just wasn't the time or place. Frankly, some of the scars left behind pointed to a time of never and a place of nowhere, but he felt he owed it to Maia to tell her the truth eventually.
With how much Maia's mom had been squealing, Isaac had expected some super mushy, romanticized tale that would have monopolized the conversation for the next thirty minutes or so. He didn't expect her to say nothing, instead trying to move past the subject. He expected Maia's father to not only speak up but also go for the jugular even less so. Contrary to his expectations, it seemed Maia's father was having a great time putting shoes on their other feet. Not even Isaac appearing in Maia's room out of nowhere had thrown Maia's mother off of her game as much as what her husband was saying. It was a fitting bit of turnabout for a woman of a million questions, and Isaac had been wanting her to get some just desserts for how harsh she was being to Maia, but this much teasing coming from someone as quiet as Maia's dad? How could he have ever seen that coming?
Still, if art nerds threw the best parties, he made a mental note to ask Maia for an invitation to one of hers down the line. Not that he could ever imagine Maia throwing a crazy party. Heck, trying to imagine Maia's mom throwing a crazy party was hard enough when she was basically just Older Maia. It was a credit to the boy that he was able to keep his composure through all of this ridiculousness.
If the goal of Maia's father was to get his wife to stop asking questions and prowling for stories today, it seemed he had succeeded. Maia's mom had retreated to check on the food again, and Isaac doubted there would be a tide of questions following her afterwards. For now Maia and Isaac would be free. He shot her a quick look, hoping to check if she was fine with this development or mortified at the story that her father had brought up.
"Okay, quick, while she's gone. What's our zombie plan?" Isaac joked.

Maia hadn't really expected an answer to her question, anyway. It wasn't like her mom was leaving too much room for conversations outside of her own, anyway. The teen couldn't tell, as events transpired, if she was further embarrassed by all of this, or if it was interesting. On one hand, it was a story she hadn't actually heard. On the other, her mom was very adamantly trying to stop the conversation, which was kind of embarrassing in it's own regard.
Mr. Quinn seemed proud of himself, leaning back in his chair and smirking. That had worked out better than he anticipated! And, the food was probably ready!
Of course, before anyone could answer Isaac's joke, Maia's mother leaned into the doorway. "Maia, honey, will you help me bring some of this out?"
A confused expression fell on Maia's face, as the tamer threw a glance at Isaac. "Uh, okay? Why?" This sounded like a trap, if she had ever heard of one! She rarely had to help bring dinner out. What, was she going to get yelled at in private about something, instead?
"I only have two hands," the woman pointed out, "I need more, and I'm afraid that I can't grow any." Not that she would want to!
Resisting the urge to make some sort of comment about being able to fix that with a demon pact, the girl rose to her feet, and pushed her chair into it's place. So much for a moment of peace! Still, she wasn't entirely certain as to why she was needed. How many dishes had been made? Wasn't one or two enough? It wasn't like it was Thanksgiving or something! Regardless, Maia followed the request and proceeded to the other room to help out.
A silence fell over the room for a moment, while the father mulled over conversation pieces in his head. Of course, he knew hardly anything about Isaac, so the topics were limited. Digimon. He knew that the kid had a mother and a brother. But, what questions could he come up with those little bits to grasp at? It wasn't like it was appropriate to inquire on Maia's actions in the other world. Plus, Kuu often filled in enough to get the gist of things. And, kids needed an escape from something that dangerous, didn't they?
Kuu wasn't a huge fan of the lack of words, though, so he needed to fill in! For some reason, still latched onto Isaac's chair, he looked to the spirit user. "How do you like Not-Mom and Dad so far? Are you gonna visit a lot now?" Of course, this didn't go unheard, as Mr. Quinn lifted an eyebrow and turned to the fox. Who asked a question like that right next to the person that they're talking about?!
