Three months.
It has been three whole months since the disappearance of Ikki Yukimura. Three whole months of non- stop interrogation, dreadful worrying and anger. Anger that there was a chance that her older brother decided to just up and leave. If he did….why didn’t he take her with him? Was she that much of a hindrance?....and then that would all circle back to fear. Of ‘what if something really did happen to him?’ To say the least Rei was torn. This feeling of helplessness, she hated it. At first she let the cops do the looking.
The brunette sighed, head bowed into hands as she thought of anything and everything she could have missed. Ikki hadn’t told anyone where he was going that day. Which was the biggest piece of the puzzle. But was there anything that he may have said that hinted at his destination? Or the way he had been acting?... Nope. Nothing.
You didn’t even get to see him that day.
Rei sat up, arms resting on her knees as she glanced to the D-scanner sitting on her desk. Not once has she used it- nor enter the digital world ever since her brother went missing. The Spirit User had been too distraught. Had been wallowing in self-pity. And yet, here was the answer to the problem. Why doesn’t she go looking for him herself? The means to do it effectively was sitting right there! And not to mention, what if by some bizarre chance he was actually in the Digital World?
In a flash the device was in hand.
Why couldn’t she have thought of this?
First, scour the streets. Maybe with a picture- Rei had plenty of her brother- and ask around. If nothing popped up, resort to the digital world and take that probability. That was one place the police force would be unable to reach. Determination filled her small frame and she packed a quick day bag, pulling one of many photos off from her assorted wall. Quietly she peeked her door open, glancing around for any signs of her parents. Usually this wouldn’t be a setback. They both worked a lot. But of course- since, ya know- they either didn’t go to work or came home early. Or alternated….
It was all clear.
Limping through the living room to the kitchen she went, hurriedly grabbing at snacks and other things- and Oh look! Cookies! Unable to help it, Rei wrenched the bag open and popped one into mouth. Yep. She was defiantly taking this bag. With enough the spirit user headed for the door….then paused. Maybe she should leave a note? There was some hesitance at this idea. Yeah, they worried for Ikki now, but not as much as she felt like they should. How would she know better though? This was all Rei knew.
And as for her well-being things were entirely different from what she use to know…..a simple, ‘hanging out with friends’ turned out to be enough.
As one would expect on a Saturday- er – day- the city was bustling. Rei had headed for the main part of the city with the idea of plunking herself in one spot and asking anyone who walked by. Which was exactly what she did. “Have you seen this guy? He went missing about three months ago.” The millionth time that came out of Rei’s mouth, eyes pleading to a women with arms of groceries and a child by her side. Unlike many of the other people passing, the women pitied her and took the time to answer.
“I’m sorry, I haven’t.”
Yet that didn’t deter the nodding Rei. "Thank you for your time.” She would bow and repeat the whole process over. Some who didn’t even take a glance at her, and to the few others who were just like the semi-kind woman. This area was just so busy, she doubted that even some people noticed her. But she kept trying.
Again.
Again.
And Again.
And eventually, one would have to tire out.
“Please! Has anyone seen him?” She cried out, frustration getting the better of her. The more Rei had asked, the more she had thought. Sure she could search the digital world for him as well, but it was just as big as this city. How foolish of her to think like that? Looking on her own, barely strong enough to fight in that dangerous world, and it would take the equivalent time that he had been gone to even comb it- and maybe even more!
Tears pricked the edges of her golden eyes. She sniffed as they threatened to spill over, trying to hold them back while she kept on asking…..Why. Why did this have to happen? Why did he leave her behind? Why did she even have to even be a part of two different worlds?! And for reasons unknown to her! None of this was fair.
Why?

Why is a nine year old wandering around town by himself one might ask? Um. Well. Have you seen that adorable face? He wanted to go out and get some cookies! And nobody could say no to that kid when he flashed them puppy-dog eyes, and offered the promise of his angelic smile if they agreed to whatever he was asking for. Sigh. Ridiculous child. Besides, he had his cellphone on him. That should be safe enough. Nothing bad ever happens to kids walking around by themselves, right?
To be fair, he could probably just ask any kidnappers to let him go.
And it wasn't as though he was completely defenceless. In theory. It'd been a couple of weeks since his TV had spat out a white D3 Digivice and a Digitama during the night. Less than a day later, it'd hatched into twin Puttimon, who had rapidly evolved into Kyupimon. They hadn't gone any further than that so far, but all three of them were super excited for when it finally happened! His big brother's partner could change into all kinds of crazy things now, after all! It's a good thing the Kyupimon twins are so light though. They're both in his backpack right now, and there's no way he'd be able to carry them if they were as heavy as they looked!
Oh.
Hey. What's that girl doing? Oh! She's looking for someone. But boy, she sounds upset! Yoshi looks over at the bakery. And then the girl. Bakery. Girl. Bakery. Girl. Darn. He'll come back later. He changes course and walks over towards Rei. She towers over him by a fool foot, and no doubt her clothes fit better than the hoodie he'd 'borrowed' from his teenaged brother.
The blonde blinks a few times, before offering the girl an uncertain smile. "Um. Hi! Are you okay, miss? You seem really upset," Right. And she was looking for someone. Maybe they got separated. "You're lookin' for someone? Maybe I can help you find them!"

Rei hadn’t even noticed the boy until he spoke up. The older girl blinked, wiping her tears away with the edges of her sleeve. He certainly was just adorable. Yet so young to be wandering these busy streets on his own. Young and naïve. She showed him the picture of Ikki, looking like a delinquent with that smug smirk and sharp eyes of his. He always did no matter how many times she took a shot of him. Really, she sort of gave up trying to get him not to look like…. such a bad guy. Rei sighed.
“Yeah. My older brother got lost you see.” She bit her lip, wondering how she should put it without scaring the kid. Nor hurt his feelings by outright rejecting him. There was no way he could help. None whatsoever. The journey Rei would on embark on would be much too dangerous. Not to mention, it’s the god damn digital world. Such a cute kid couldn’t be involved with anything like that. No sir. And she would be damned to get him involved.
Her eyes glanced away, taking notice of the bakery across the street and hummed in thought. “Where are your parents? Did you get lost yourself?” Oh! She suddenly remembered the bag of cookies and tugged her bag off, shifting through the contents of extra clothing, water bottles and other snacks.
It was time to change the subject.
“What’s your name?”
Kindly Rei smiled, holding out the package of chocolate chip cookies in offering. She pushed her brother’s disappearance to the side for now. And get back to it as soon as she knew the boy was safe’n sound, and back with his family.

"Oh. Hm," Yoshi considers for a few moments, taking one cookie and offering the girl a bright smile. As he takes the cookie, the overly-long sleeve of his oversized hoodie shifts to reveal most of a completely white D3 Digivice attached to a white terrycloth wristband. "Thank you!" Manners? That's crazy! People don't have manners anymore, do they? He takes a small bite of the cookie, chews and swallows before answering the questions. "No, I'm okay! My parents are at home," They're either very trusting parents or awful parents, then, "I just came out to buy some cookies! Um. I'm Kiyoshi Inoue, but you can call me Yoshi!" his smile only widens a little, "what's your name?" Why does everything he say sound like he's talking about rainbows and kittens? Guh. The eternal optimism of a child. Quickly, crush it, Rei! "I'm really sorry to hear about your brother!" Yoshi shuffles a little. He knows how he'd feel if his big brother got lost like that. And the girl seems really nice! And more importantly, upset! "I haven't seen him but, um. What I can I do to help? I wanna help you try and find him!"

You’ve got be kidding me. The white digivice was hard to miss. Rei gaped, staring, and almost missing the kid’s name. “N-nice to meet you, Yoshi.” Her chipper voice was strained, perhaps a little too chipper but the fact that he was a digimon tamer- She just couldn’t believe it. This was too much of a coincidence. “I’m Rei. Rei Yukimura.” And hearing that his parents just let him be. Well, she wasn’t sure what to make of that. Guess there was all kinds of people. “Um, well.” He was extremely sweet. Really. And even if he was involved with this whole digi business, it didn’t make her feel any better. “I uh…thank you for the offer to help, but I’m not sure how your parents would feel if we accidentally get into trouble.” For him to catch her meaning, she slightly tugged her D-scanner out of her coat pocket. Accidentally. Yeah. Totally accidentally. It was more like guaranteed that they would run into all sorts of trouble. She would entirely be responsible for him. Plus she would never forgive herself if something happened to him on her watch. “I might be gone for a while. Days even. I can’t ask you to come with me. It’ll worry your family.” Rei was trying to let him down as softly as she could without crushing the poor kids feelings.

Yoshi's smile doesn't falter. In fact it grows a little as he sees the D-Scanner. He's seen one of those before! It's almost as cool as his own! Just a shame they don't come with partner Digimon. Oh well. They get to transform like superheroes! That's just as badass!
"It's okay, they'll understand!" Will they? Oh right. If you drop them a note right before you vanish, you mean. Although he can think of a few ways to cover himself for a few days. Better than weeks, at least. "You don't have to ask! I'm offering!" The boy's smile is so bright that it practically sparkles. Hey, is that a ray of sunshine coming through the clouds above him? No, wait. That's just some narrative convenience. Shoo!
"The search'll be easier with two of us, Rei! And you'll have someone to keep you company, and keep your spirits up!" Well. It isn't bad logic. Especially not for a little kid. Hah. Spirits. I see what you did there, Yoshi.

Um.
Rei couldn't help but nervously smile, her mind slapping her forehead and groaning inwardly. This damn kid was just excessively bright. It was unhealthy. She swore to the gods. Her teeth were rotting just by being around him. "A-are you sure?" What the hell was she saying?! Was she really going to take this naive kid with her?!
Oh come on Rei. You're stronger than this!
She looked up, sighing before glancing his way again. Nope. Nope she was not. The Spirit User was going to have to be blunt with Yoshi. And she didn't have it in her heart just to outright say it. 'No, you can't come.' wasn't going to go overly well. It was easier to give in then going to have to go through teary-eyed motions, right?
Yep.
"First, I want to see your partner." She grabbed his hand suddenly, tugging him along behind her. Perhaps they shouldn't plan out in the open. Plus, she wanted to see his so-called digimon before they went along any further. Even with the digivice, she needed to be a hundred percent sure the kid wasn't lying. That he just didn't find it on the ground somewhere and decided to play along. Even though she already knew he wasn't but she could hope, yeah?
"Secondly," Rei stopped by an alley, a quick scan -showing her that the coast was clear of hooligans and other mishaps- before ducking in with the poor kid still in tow. Finally she let go, turning around to face Yoshi with her hands upon her hips. "You need to tell your parents, ASAP. I'm not letting you come with me until you give them a fake-good reason why you might be gone for so long." Well, that was certainly weird to say.
"And thirdly, if your seriously coming with me, you need to promise me something." Rei paused, making sure she had his attention. "If I tell you to run, you run. Got it? No if's or butts about it. Promise me that or I won't take you with." Her voice was stern. She really meant it. If there was any indication that they bit off more than they could chew, she needed to be sure he will listen to her. Or it was a no-go.

"If you tell me to run, I will, but only if you run with me. I'm not gonna leave you behind!" As sweet and innocent as he is, there's a momentary look of fierce determination on his face. Besides. Pretty hard to ditch him now, Rei. Pssh. Should've magically forseen this before you left the house.
"I'll ask my brother's boyfriend's parents to cover for me! They know about...um..." he taps his wrist where the Digivice is concealed beneath his sleeve, "So I think they will! They're super nice," he stops once they're in the alleyway, taking off his backpack and setting it on the ground, opening it up. A pair of identical heads poke out. Kyupimon, in-training level. The two begin speaking quickly, taking turns and leaving no room to interrupt for almost thirty seconds. Oh boy.
"Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!" "Hi!"
Gah. Stop.
"Um. These are my partners!" Twins. And they're both as chipper and happy as he is. This should be a fun adventure.

Should’ve seen that coming.
Yoshi had so effortlessly turned this back around on her. Well, if that’s what it will take. Not that she couldn’t guarantee running with him. It almost hurt to lie to him. Almost. But if one of them could only get away, it would be for his own good.
“Alright, I’ll promise too.”
Ah. That brings up another problem. What was she going to tell her parents? Rei certainly couldn’t up and leave without letting them know why. If she did, that would be hypocrisy…..Ugh. She really dug herself into a hole with this one.
The dropping of his bag re-caught her attention. And most certainly the two identical white digimon that popped their heads out with cheery and seemingly never ending hi’s. Rei definitely should’ve seen this one coming. She nearly let out a groan, restraining the urge to pinch the bridge of her nose.
Great. The spirit user was hoping that Yoshi’s digimon was at least….adult-ish? Would that be the correct term? Perhaps responsible. Nor naïve. Anything than this. Now she was just going to have to deal with it. “As long as someone knows.” She reaffirmed his decision to let his…brother’s boyfriend parents know. Man that was a mouthful. At least some sort of parents would know.
Guess that made Rei feel a tad better.
“Okay, so now that’s all figured out.” Rei crouched, taking a closer a look at his digimon….they were most certainly cute. Her heart swelled and in the end decided not to hold it against them. They were just too adorable for that. Just like their tamer. “How about we meet at the bakery across the street? Say about, in two hours? That should give us enough time.” In the end, Rei had unquestionably made up her mind. Her parents could go suck it.
This was mostly for Yoshi’s sake to get prep and ready for the journey to come.

Kiyoshi continues to smile at her. Hm. Does he have other facial expressions? Maybe he's a robot. Or dead. He slowly zips the bag back up after gently pushing each Kyupimon's head inside several times, resulting in an impromptu game of Whack-a-Mole, where each push had been accompanied by one of the twins saying 'Boop'. Ridiculous.
"I'll make sure they know! Um. The bakery. Alright. That'll give me time to run home and get some stuff!" Like, y'know. Water. And food other than cookies. Like brownies. He pulls his backpack on with a little difficulty, then waves at Rei and sets off back the way he'd originally come, leaving a rainbow in his wake. Metaphorically. Probably.
His parents technically know about the Digimon too, but they're less likely to understand why he needs to be away for several days, or why adults can't handle it. But Takahiro's parents will! He just hopes they'll agree to help him!
