EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD [3/4]
The next night, Kyo appeared donning her Plotmon form once again. And... found just Squire by the training grounds. No Commandramons had come in today; maybe she had scared them too much? That was really unfortunate, but it wasn't as if she couldn't fix that. Well, somewhat, at least. "Huh, just one trainee this night. Speaking of cowards." She said as she made a tiny shrug. Well, they were the ones that had lost the chance to train under her tutelage. "Alright, hopefully you won't mind a private lesson this time, blue guy."Well, how she'd begin? A warm up would be nice, but she wasn't sure on which exercises the Veemon variant would go through. Really, really unfortunate. "Well, let's begin with an easy one, even if it's not a standard exercise." Well, at least it wasn't one in her book. "Why do you think you failed yesterday's exercise? If you're the only one who came, that means that you probably are the only one that thinks the situation isn't hopeless, so I'd like to hear your opinion about it."Squire was either brave, stubborn, reckless or not a coward. In any case, all those options were better than being a coward, so that was fine. "And... what would you have done in order to prevent what happened? You know, given the catastrophic nature of the team's failure." She had to admit that that was very strange, given that they seemed to perform alright by themselves, but got destroyed as a team. With any luck, the digimon would provide with an interesting explanation or enough will to stand up and try again. Both were favorable outcomes and they'd serve Kyo to get to know her trainee better. After all, how somebody understood a fight was a solid point on making him better at them.

He had been planning to keep all the Commandramon in line. He had not planned for in case they were missing, though. "Where's everyone?" He wondered out loud as he looked around, moving his face to look down at the clipboard. Nope, it still said they were supposed to stay in camp and train for at least a month. Had they all bailed? They probably had. Squire palmed his face. "'Soldiers' my tail." Cowards, the lot of them! First the lost their nerve on a friggin' exercise, now they skipped class to avoid a bit of a beating. He had honestly expected a bit better from soldiers.
"Bah, cowards, the lot of them." He mumbled sourly to himself as he threw the clipboard to the floor. It was probably useless now anyways. No need for it when there were no soldiers to keep track off. He almost jumped off his skin when the sergeant suddenly spoke up, having not been paying much attention. Well, it was nice to know that their superior officer agreed with him, if nothing else. Not that it made the fact that their unit had been reduced to only two soldiers in a single night any less frustrating.
"... Squire-Veemon, ma'am." He corrected, turning to face her and striking the best and firmest salute he could manage. "And that's all right for me, Ma'am! Please teach me, Sergeant!" They could all stay home and keep sucking their thumbs for all he cared! He would train for all of them! He was ready to undergo grueling, painful and exhausting physical training.
Instead he got a quiz. She had picked on his weaknesses really quickly, apparently.
"Uh..." Was all he could utter, his mind failing to catch up quickly enough. A second or so later, he seemed to have finally fully processed the question. His brows knit together as a look of deep focus settled onto his features, something akin to a bemused scowl appearing on his face.
"Err... I... really don't know." he said in response to the first question. He was young, and didn't know much about psychology or anything of the like. As far as he was concerned... "They ran because they were cowards, I guess? Everyone just started losing their nerve the moment they saw another trainee knocked out. I can't really say I understand why, though." The sight hadn't brought much terror or fear inside him; mostly it had just made him cautious. Maybe due to his experiences in the Sewers, he was better used to dealing with fear. Maybe.
"The situation was never hopeless; we only lost because the majority of the unit couldn't keep their wits. We should have been able of taking down a single champion." There were more than a dozen of them. The fact that they had failed to deal with a single champion was just embarrassing, no matter how experienced the champion may have been.
"What would I have... done?" It was a good question. How to keep the cowards from losing their nerves and running away? Well... "I guess... I should have taken leadership from the start. The first trainee to go down was all alone. We were supposed to be in groups so that we wouldn't be taken by surprise. If he had been in a group, the others may have been able to initiate combat with Mr. Doggymon. The sound of rifle fire would have taken us all towards them, and then..." Well, they were more than a dozen rookies. They could do many things, even manhandle the Doggymon if they had too.
"I guess that's what I would do?" Unfortunately, thinking wasn't really his strong forte. He couldn't think of many plans that weren't very straight forward in manner.

Seemed that Squire wasn't that good of a strategist. Or a thinker, while at it. While a good quality as a soldier, it was pretty obvious that in situations like these, he'd have to think on his own. And... having a hollow head probably wasn't that helpful.
"Hm. I see..." It was an interesting reasoning, she had to admit. "So, you think that everyone just panicked for no real reason, then everything went to hell? Well, that's a fair reasoning. See, one thing that happens when fighting at night or in unknown, poorly illuminated terrain is that fear of the unknown can add up if you don't know what to expect. Like, I think that the Commandramons were more knowledgeable than you, and that's why they ended up with their tails between their legs. See..."
The puppy took out tape recorder and played it, making the same ominous howl than before play out.
"I gave this to Doggymon yesterday. The tape's actually your very own sergeant's howl! Well, at least back when I could evolve into Cerberumon X. Would you have reacted differently if you knew you were about to face a Perfect level? Even after taking on of your allies almost instantly? That's where I'm going."
After giving him a pensive look and storing the recorder on her person again, Kyo followed up.
"There's also the fact that you didn't have any clear leader also demoralized the group rather quickly. If there isn't anybody there willing to keep the entire unit disciplined, the group's found to fail as soon as the first of its members panics. That 's why your idea was good, even though you didn't really execute it; well, there was no idea for you to rise up as quickly as the unit's leader, either, even if you're supposed to be my assistant. Guess the teaching is to never go into anything without a clear plan. You had ample time to prepare, yet still went out in the dark. That's kinda reckless, don't you think?"
Lessons probably weren't as fun as training, but... they were necessary in the growth of a digimon. After all, even if most of the time they were lone fighters, in case you had to fight alongside others, simple stuff like basic teamwork could very well mean the difference between winning or losing.
"Next time, just take in mind that being a leader isn't necessarily being the strongest digimon in the group, but just the most apt to strategize. Given that you're a knight's apprentice and read some history, you should know really well that the tide of many battles was turned towards the side of inferior numbers thanks to better training and superior strategy. Those things can be vital depending on the situation you are in. Got it?"
Hopefully he did. Maybe this was just a little too complex for the poor Veemon.

A Perfect level's howl? Huh. Well, he would admit he hadn't had a clue as to which digimon had exactly been the one to howl, but... Honestly, it seemed like just an excuse, even with that knowledge. Squire tilted his head to the side, his lips pursed. "Hmm... Even assuming they actually knew that, losing their heads like they did certainly didn't help them any, right?" Heck, it had actually gotten them all defeated even swifter, against all odds.
"Would I have reacted differently?" A good question. Would he? He liked to think that no, he wouldn't have reacted any differently. Because losing his head and running away would just get him taken down from behind. However, even if he decided to hold his ground... would he be able of actually fighting? Or would he just freeze like the Commandramon that actually stayed?
"... I would probably have charged it the same way that other Commandramon did, now that I think about it." Yes, that was actually something he could imagine himself doing, unfortunately. Ultimately though... "It would probably not be an encounter I would survive, regardless." He finished with a mumbled, looking down thoughtfully. Whether he stayed his ground or ran, the perfect level would tear him to pieces with ease, likely. Squire needed to grow stronger; but no matter how much he trained, it didn't seem to be enough to push him past Rookie.
Ah yes, his botched attempt at seizing the leadership of the group. That really could have gone better. Unfortunately, he had kept his mannerism fairly passive and his tone and speech suggestive instead of authoritative. The Commandramon had probably been more used to more forceful and authoritative speech from superiors in the army, so his orders were taken as suggestions and he was brushed aside for the most part.
"I... wasn't too sure about becoming the leader back then." He explained, scratching the back of his head. "Everyone had been trained as soldiers in a team. I was trained as a single knight." He shrugged his shoulders, still unsure. "I just made more sense for any of them to take leadership. But they all stayed quite, so I thought 'hey, might as well been me, so long as its someone'." He clicked his tongue. "I should probably have tried to be more firm... first chance one of them got he separated from his group and got taken out."
And then the rest fell like dominoes.
Urgh. He didn't like talking too much about his failures. He generally could learn from them immediately and move past them. Unfortunately, it was the first time he botched something other than a technique or an inconsequential letter delivery. And the sergeant seemed determined to make sure he knew how and why his team had failed, and how he in particular could have put a stop to that if he had acted differently.
Her teachings where sound in the end, though. His first team exercise had been a complete failure, but luckily, the sergeant had managed to turn it into a learning experience for him.
He wasn't much of a tactician or strategist. His incredible record of 0 victories against his master at chess spoke for itself. It was clear that the sergeant wanted him to try and change this, much like his master. Before, he had never seen much point to it, trusting his skill enough to get him through a tough pinch. He hadn't been taking into account ever having a team, then.
"... Yeah." He mumbled in response to Kyo's question, beofre remembering she was still his superior, straightening u and squaring his shoulders before replying again. "I mean. Yes, I understand, ma'am!"

At Squire's last words, Kyo couldn't but smile teasingly. The Veemon must've to have gotten really comfortable around her to to talk as casually as he did. That was good, she guessed? It wasn't like she she liked commanding blind authority or anything of the like, anyway. "Heh, wasn't that a bit too casual?" The digimon asked with a teasing smile. "Don't worry 'bout it anyway. I've never been able to maintain authority positions for too long. Guess I'm just really approcheable."Or maybe she wasn't taken seriously enough to command any kind of respect. Something that... was fair too, she guessed. Not like she was interesting on it or something. "Anyhow, that's how your training concludes. Congratulations! Now you're a little more intelligent and you know you can aim with a bow... well, every now and then, that is! Hopefully you enjoyed it." Shrugging a bit, she extended a somewhat crumped letter towards him. "I was told to give you this, but I kiiiiiinda forgot yesterday. Hopefully it isn't too late! I was told by the messenger that a mean tin can said that the consequences of failing to deliver this would be serious, so I hope nothing bad happens!"It wasn't as if she was afraid of them, but maybe Squire cared about the letter or the consequences, so she just seemed to take that slightly seriously

Bleh, seemed like the sergeant wouldn't simply let his little faux pas go. It was a little hard to keep the courtesies when she was so casual and friendly about everything. It really made him forget she was supposed to be his superior. "My apologies, ma'am!" He tried to amend immediately, though she frankly didn't look like she cared much for that. She confirmed as much immediately.
Well, he hadn't been wrong. "Oh." he mumbled, scratching the back of his head. She wasn't wrong; she was much easier to speak to than any sergeant he had ever met. Certainly didn't fit the 'Drill sergeant Nasty' stereotype the Commandramon had spoken of during the first day.
Then again, the second stage of her training had certainly been a nasty piece of work. 'Can't complain though, it worked.'
She didn't exactly have the presence of a commander. But he could certainly take her seriously as an experienced warrior and combatant. Folding his right arm over his chest, he bowed lowly to her, as a sign of respect. "Thank you for your training, Ma'am." He would need a lot more training before he could use the bow in any real battle... but if nothing else, he had started, at least. His skill could only get better from here. He didn't know about being more intelligent, but he was certainly a bit more knowledgeable and cautious, now.
Well, he had been dismissed. It looked like it was time to go back home... How was he supposed to find Eldoradimon, the roaming city, again?
'Crud.'
Oh wait, it looked like he wasn't quite done, yet.
"A... letter?" He mumbled, his brows furrowing as he reached for the somewhat crumpled piece of paper, turning it around to check for sender and destination. "Oh, friggin' crud." It was a letter sent to him by... some dude from the Empyrian Skies area of the digital world. Sent to him so that he would carry it and deliver to... The Duke of Hazards, or simply Dukemon, who was currently at Rustport Town, a small dwelling at the Western Flatlands area.
Basically, he was expected to travel well over a 1000 kms. Even if he took a trailmon, he would still have to cross the majority of the desert by foot.
"As much of a taskmaster as always, I see." He grumbled as he tucked the letter onto one of his pouches, sighing. "I must go, Ma'am. It appears I must cross the desert. Thanks for everything, again." He said, before turning to leave the spartan training grounds. He would try and catch a Trailmon; sooner he got started, the less likely it was his master would chew him out for being late.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER [4/4] "Yup, a letter. Sounded like something important, too. But maybe the messenger was a little too serious about it. In any case, you probably want to read it. Messages are usually meant to be read, after all."Snickering at the fact that she had lost all sense of formality after reading it, Kyo seemed to be somewhat curious about the message. Seemingly, it was yet another job. Heh, the life of a trainee never seemed to end, or at least that's what it looked like. "Oh, so you gotta travel? And across the desert, while at it?" The journey would surely be long and exhausting, given that he'd probably have to go by foot for most of it. "Well, given that I kinda forgot to give you this yesterday, I guess I can help you a bit to compensate..."She wasn't doing it because she felt indebted to Squire or anything of the sort, to be honest. But... the fact was that her class had decided to not to come and... she had nothing better to do at least for the one or two days it'd take Yuu to get out of school. And adventuring sounded like lots of fun, she had to say. And so, take a strange oval shaped object from her fur, an increasingly strong black light began to surround her, enveloping her body for five seconds until... she evolved! As Gaogamon, this'd be infinitely easier. "So, want a ride?" The newly evolved digimon asked "I think we can get there pretty fast. And don't worry about me; I have nothing better to do anyway."The other option for Squire was... walking in the dark until he came back to Terminus, then picking a Trailmon there. Even without intending it, Kyo know that the alternative was infinite times easier than that. Not to say that it was also way funnier,

Important indeed. And unfortunately, the messenger was probably not being serious enough. Urgh. His master could be such a pain in the tail when set out to it. A thousand mile journey from the Eastern Timberlands to the Western Flatlands. On his own, even though this was literally the first time he walked out of the Golden City.
A sink or swim mentor if there had ever been one.
"This isn't a message, actually." He replied simply, "It's an assignment. I must deliver this card to the true recipient. Who is currently in Rustport town. All the way over to the Western Flat lands." He would need to get a map before setting out, now that he thought about it. A compass would also likely help him. He couldn't allow himself to get lost in the ocean of sand.
Or he could ride the Sergeant, who could evolve into both a nun and giant dog, apparently.
"Uh..." He stared at her, slightly stupified by the surprise offer. He had only known this digimon for two days, her offering him a ride, a 1000 miles long ride, was just a little weird. Not to mention how unlikely it was for her to be able to cover more ground than a trailmon. Even if she was faster, it was unlikely that she could run for 1000 miles straight, in comparison to the trailmon, who never stopped.
But it was a free ride, something he couldn't say a trailmon ride.
"Well, if you really have nothing better to do... Sure, why not? Saves me the money from the ride." he said, giving a shrug and a little smile at her. The huge and muscular form of Gaogamon didn't suit her voice at all. But the general mannerism was all her. Approaching her carefully, he slowly climbed up onto her back, mindful to not yank onto her hair too hard.
"This is my first time doing this kind of thing. Please be gentle!"

Very well! Crouching a bit on the ground, Kyo awaited for Squire to hop on top of her. Even if she was her superior officer, she didn't really mind being mounted. Like, she found funny how some digimons refused to carry others on grounds of pride or nonsense like that, when the everything would've been so much simpler the other way around.
Oh well. No point on thinking about right now. Onto what's important.
"Hold on tight! This will get shaky!" Just as she said that, Kyo stood up and began to visualize her destiny. Rustport, huh? That'd probably take like seven hours at most, taking into account possible roadbumps. With any luck, there wouldn't be any, however.
The Black Gaogamon took impulse, and half a second later, she was already running towards her destination, joyous expression on her face. What was more liberating than the sensation of absolute freedom that running gave? Nothing she could think about right now, for sure. This was pure, unadulterated bliss.
So much, in fact, that she couldn't resist to let out random howls as her blurry visage advanced through the night. Strangely enough, such simple act made her feel... alive. An in all frankness, that actually meant a lot for a digimon that had met her end not even after a day had passed since she hatched. That memory still stung, even after so much time had passed, but... eh, what could she do about it; only to face the guilty parties and to pay them back in kind once the time came, she guessed? Yuu's lifestyle wasn't much in line with that search, and her own attempts had proven to be futile thus far. Maybe those two had vanished for good?
If that was the case, she guessed she was fine with it. While revenge would feel nice, she would definitely get by without it. Maybe she had grown out of the feeling too, maybe that had been her partner's intent all this time. No way for her to know.
In any case, thinking about those things was a waste of time right now. Chasing ghosts from the past had never been the most productive thing to do.
"So, Squire, right? How's life where you live? You don't seem to be from around these places, so I guess you come from another area or city? Which one? Whitewater, Luminas, the Dark Area or even Eldoradimon? I think most of those places are really interesting!" She made a small pause before adding. "Well, except Luminas; that places is as boring as it can get, and when I was there, people kinda looked at me with weird eyes, you know? But well, I guess that's the bad side of being a virus in a city of angels. Some were particularly infuriating or condescending, and I kinda considered liberating them of their heads, but in the end, I decided that they weren't worth my time. Well, and I kinda have a reputation to uphold; random murders wouldn't do it much good, right?"
The canine giggled at her own joke, before thinking about her words for a second.
"Well, then again, I guess that an angel going to the Dark Area would be perceived as a threat, but... well, anything that doesn't reside in the Dark Area going there is perceived as a threat. Place's normally really hostile, I guess. At least there she could be as violent as she wanted to if somebody tried to appear as some kind of big shot and didn't have the power to back that claim."
Maybe she has been talking too much? Probably.
"Huh, sorry. I think I rambled a bit."

She was fast, he would give her that much. And she liked to understate a lot, apparently. He was practically hugging her fur to not fall off her. 'Shaky' was a very weak word for what he was feeling at the moment. Well, at least the breeze was nice. He wasn't sure if it wouldn't have been better to take the Trailmon after all, though.
Still, after the rough take off and some time getting used to it, Squire found himself laying down on his chest on the fur, staring into the horizon. His red eyes widened ever so slightly as he took in a sight he had never beheld before. It truly reminded him that he had not seen anything that the digital world had to offer yet. For once, he was free to explore the digital world at his own leisure, truly enjoy himself and sate his curiosity to his heart content.
'No. Gotta deliver the letter, remember?' Yes; he was a Squire, sworn to serve his lord until the day he too became a Knight... No matter how much he wished to drop everything and explore, he had duties and responsibilities to attend to. Looking back over the plains, over the clouds in the sky and over the horizon, Squire felt a deep sense of longing in his chest, before slowly shaking his head. "Some day... " But not today.
"Huh?" Oh, the Sergeant was talking to him. His brows knotted together; why did she even care about any of this? He could scarcely think of anything more boring than living in the moving City. "The third one, actually." He answered, shrugging his shoulders as he spoke. "The golden City is great and all, but it gets boring when you aren't allowed to leave or do anything." He was technically still a civilian, so he wasn't permitted to attempt to handle robberies or any criminal activities, and since was legally a child with a guardian, he wasn't allowed to leave without Dukemon's permission.
"I guess you can get some fun out of exploring the forests around the city. though." He got bored speaking of the city. His mind was already wandering off even as his mouth rambled on and on. Soon he was done, but his mind was already elsewhere, paying more attention to the plains and hills he wouldn't be exploring any time soon instead of the sergeant's ramblings. He managed to get the general idea, even so.
She didn't like Luminas, something Dark Area something violence and hostility. Honestly, it all sounded terribly dull. Preconceived notions about Vaccine and Virus types in type dominated areas... How new. Even he knew all about that crap; it was practically the history of nearly every war in some way.
"I don't mind. But let's try and talk about something else..."
The desert sucked just as much at night as it did at daytime, though in the completely opposite way. Whereas the day was filled with harsh sunglares and boiling heat, the night time was filled with chilling breezes and buffeting sands. The fact that they were travelling so fast did not help the matters. He was pretty sure his face would freeze and fall off at this rate. Luckily for him, he had somehow managed to bury himself in Kyo's fur. It was fairly comfy and warm.
He had unfortunately never travelled the desert himself; Eldoradimon had made more than a few treks into it in the past, but Squire hadn't exactly been at the helm back then.
"Oi, Kyo." He was buried in her fur for warmth. It was the point where all formalities were dropped. "Any idea where we are, specifically? I've no idea where the Rust town is..."

Talking about something else, huh? Maybe Squire didn't like it too much where he currently was, or maybe he found the conversation dumb? In any case, that was fine for her... it wasn't as if she needed to talk, but she guessed that Squire might get bored if she didn't. Traveling aboard of anything was really boring, at least for her. Being able to move on her own was a true blessing, if anything.
"Hm?" He seemed like he wanted to ask about something; oh, of course, the distance. "Well, we're quite near, actually!"
Rustport was a small city; well, a town, rather. By somebody who hadn't been there before, it probably was kinda hard to locate, but for Kyo... it wasn't so much. In fact, she could already see some buildings at the distance.
"See?" She pointed at the horizon, where a tiny bit of civilization could be seen if one squinted too hard. "We're almost there.
And just in time for the sun to begin its race towards the sky. Huh, dawn already?
"To be honest, I think I broke my last record!" She said cheerfully as her body came closer and closer to the city. "But that was mostly thanks to the trip being pretty uneventful. Guess that traveling at night is way more tranquil."
Her speed began to become progressively slower until it came to a halt by the town's entrance.
"Well, here we are!" She said cheerfully. "Guess that our paths diverge here? If that's the case, guess I'll see you around. Good luck!"
Now... she had to get to Terminus. Maybe take a breather in the Human World. That'd be nice.

She was right; if he squinted, he could see small silhouettes in the horizon. The sun was just barely beginning to dawn upon the heaven, its light washing over the buildings and revealing them fully to Squire. Yet, Squire paid no attention to the small town.
His breath had caught at the sight of the rising sun. His eyes took in the sight of the slow dawn, his young mind blown away by the spectacle of nature before him. The high walls of the Golden City didn't allow for anyone to catch sight of the sun as it rose or fell.
Mystified by it as he was, he didn't realize just how close they were until Kyo had almost fully stopped, the breeze no longer blowing across his face. The searing heat of the desert had substituted the chilliness of the night, leaving Squire to slowly pull himself out of Kyo's fur.
Kyo was already saying her goodbyes. Made sense; she had given him a ride, now she was off to do whatever it was she usually did. Bowing to her slightly, Squire gave her a shy smile.
"Thank you, Kyo. It was nice meeting ya." He sad simply, scratching at the back of his head. See him around? Who knew. The digital world was huge. Then again, he could be found in the same place, always. Unfortunately, said place could rarely be found in the same area more than once. "Good luck with that. I'll be happy to show you around if you ever find Eldoradimon!" He offered with a smile. As she turned to leave, Squire weaved animatedly, watching her take off. Honestly, she looked even faster when you weren't on top of her.
Well... Now he was on Rustport town. Time to find the old Knight.
"You are awfully early." commented the old knight as Squire entered into the Inn. He was seated in the table closest to the door. Obviously, he had been waiting for him.
"I caught an early ride." Replied the young dragon simply, moving to take the seat across from the old knight.
"Ah, is that so? Did you bring... the letter?" Asked the older knight, waving to the waitress. A growing boy needed his meals, after all.
"Yeaup." He confirmed, reaching into his pouch for the letter before handing it to the old knight.
"Ah, good, good." simply said the old knight as he grasped the letter, tucking it into his pouch without bothering to read it.
"So... are we done?" No real need to ask.
"Yes, quite so. We shall start our journey home soon."
"I see... Understood."
