It's Raining Maias (Hallelujah!) (Maia)

Everyone had this dream before. Any reader knows exactly what I'm talking about. You feel like you're falling, and then you jolt awake as if you had just landed right on your bed. It's one of the most universal human feelings.
That was the exact feeling that would snap Maia and Kuu out of their unconsciousness. The only problem was that, unlike your average dreamer, they didn't stop falling. In fact, they tore right through Maia's bed and continued tumbling through the wild blue yonder. It was as if their house was suspended high into the air, and if they looked up they would see it rapidly fading away into a tiny, off-white speck. On the other hand, if they looked down, they would notice nothing but blue beneath them. Was it ocean, or was it simply more sky? After all, despite their perpetual falling, they seemed to be going nowhere very fast.
With the sound of an umbrella opening, Pumpkinmon drifted past them like a deranged Mary Poppins. "Hey! How're you enjoying the fall? Personally, it's my favorite season. And this drop from a million miles in the air is pretty nice too. Yep. You two have a long, long way to go. There's ground down there somewhere. I think. You might have to look really hard for it, though, so you don't pass it by. Stick the landing and you'll find the way out of here. Just be careful, 'cause its a long, cold swim otherwise.
By the way, if you guys happen to see my weather machine, think you could kick its butt into gear for me? Its on the fritz lately, and I'd hate to ruin a perfectly good fall with a thunderstorm or twenty." With an ominous boom of lightning, Pumpkinmon's grin spread ear to ear. "Heck, I'd say its on its way now! Hope you guys brought your umbrellas!" With a cackle echoing through the empty sky, Pumpkinmon let himself drift away.
A layer of clouds parted, and soon Maia would able to see the sea. If it wasn't for the slow, inevitable plummet to the ground, it would be quite the beautiful sight! Reds mixed with blues mixed with teals mixed with greens mixed with purples, as if the water was every color it could possibly be. Unfortunately, the many shades of the world's oceans would make finding the land that Pumpkinmon promised a lot more challenging of a task. Not helping was the constant cloud cover. They may have been shaped like pleasant things such as dolphins, cats, and bunnies, but they were doing a wonderful job of getting in the duo's way whenever they were trying to scope out the area. And the ominous rumble that was tailing them wouldn't be helping matters either.

Of all the dreams, why wouldn't Maia expect this?
Really, she would have continued to sleep, if not for Kuu screeching, "weeee!" And, as eyes opened to see the surroundings, Maia had to strongly disagree. "Wee" was most certainly not the thought that was crossing her mind.
Hyperventilating, however, was strongly up her alley. And, if it were a sport, the tamer would be winning gold medals. While Pumpkinmon started talking, the girl heard absolutely nothing from all of it. Hopefully it wasn't important! Or, maybe, Kuu would fill her in once she could control her panic. Instead, she simply attempted some sort of angry-eyes at the Digimon. What had she signed up for with this?!
And, once all was said, Pumpkinmon was gone, and Maia still had no idea what was going on. Instead, she finally scrambled to find her Digivice, and began button-mashing. Agh! What one initiated digivolution? This wasn't fun! Eject! Eject!
In a flash of light, Kuu had grown wings (and substantially larger), and swung himself beneath his tamer. Catching her, the girl finally had a chance to properly gather herself. Sure, this was still awful, but it wasn't falling to her death! Really, this felt like an awful trust fall, with a booming mystery. "Why is this happening?" Maia finally huffed, trying to find enough breath to make words.
"Because you signed up for it?"
Not the answer she wanted! "Okay! No. What is happening?"
"You were falling. It was fun. I know - you don't agree," the Digimon added the final bit in a tone that he figured Maia would take up. "Something about landing, water, and storm machines that will flood the world if we don't stop it!" That probably wasn't what was actually going on, but Maia didn't really know the truth at this point, so she had to roll with it. "We're supposed to save the day, so nobody dies."
Bad descriptors!
Regardless, Quetzalmon was whirling through the skies, trying to find something that they were supposed to be doing. In turn, Maia didn't have much choice but to go with him.

The wild blue yonder normally didn't provide many clues. However, normally the wild blue yonder was a lot calmer than it was today. As Kuu flew around, he would notice the weather was a complete, yet rather oddly specific mess. To the north, south, west, and east, different patterns of wind and weather were forming. While at first the skies seemed endless, if Kuu went far enough in a single direction he would notice walls of tornadoes that seemed to form an impenetrable barrier. This would make their search easier, although "easier" in this case was like covering a needle in bright highlighter before haphazardly flinging it into a haystack.
The south wind was a stormy tempest, forming a horrid mess of grey clouds above the water. Lightning was constantly striking down from them and smashing into the sea, as great bursts of thunder echoed just a little too loudly for comfort. However, if examined closely, there was lightning striking in between the clouds as well. This lightning happened in regular patterns, and strangely enough seemed to form letters with each streak. R. E. D. The same pattern repeated over and over again, never deviating.
The north wind was freezing cold, so much so that the air was filled with a thin, wispy mist. The weather patterns here started as a gentle snowfall, but if Maia and Kuu approached they would find the snows intensifying into a vicious blizzard. Occasionally, the air would become thick with ice crystals, which hung in the air and glistened majestically. They did not seem to be forming any words, but there was certainly a pattern to them. They always appeared in groups of four, forming a diamondlike pattern.
The west wind was very moderate compared to the other two, and it seemed every living creature in the area knew it. Whereas the northern and southern quadrants were barren, the western quadrant was full of life. Birds of all shapes, sizes, and colors flocked through the air. Unfortunately, there were far too many of them, and they did not seem to take kindly to any intrusions in their area. If Maia and Kuu approached they would find themselves perched on, pecked at, and even dove into by birds of prey. As the birds flew about they sung, their chirping forming a simple melody. While to an unfocused ear it would sound like simple birdsong, enough listening would seem to make it form into words. Each tweet started to sound like the word "Mo-squi-to~!"
Finally, the eastern skies were bare. They would provide a great spot for Maia and Kuu to sit and think, especially as the concentration of thunder, frost, and birds started to thicken around them.

Still wrapped in terror, Maia had no disputes to what Kuu had stated was the goal for their adventure. She tried to look out at their options, but really, none of them looked good. "Can, uh, can we," there were mumbled words that stumbled from her lips, before she focused again, "ground. I would like to be on the ground."
"Hummm," the Quetzalmon seemed to mull over what his tamer was requesting, before he began to move forward. "Nope! That's not saving the day!" Ugh! The girl didn't want to save the day! She wanted to save her own sanity! Of course, with a pet like Kuu, there wasn't a chance of sanity at the end of the day, regardless. "I don't know which way to go, though!"
"Down?"
Clearly, that wasn't an answer the Digimon was willing to accept, because he completely ignored it. First, he attempted to near the birds, but as they began their creepy 'song,' and began to look aggressive, Kuu decided that maybe that was a bad starting point. Now, he was stuck on debating north or south.
"North looks, uh, safest," Maia finally mumbled out, hoping that for once, Kuu would listen.
Much to her dismay, he did not. "Okay!" With that, the Digimon veered south, toward the dangerous sounding storm. "I hope your decision doesn't hurt us!"
To this, the tamer huffed, "you don't know which direction you're even going, do you?"
"Nope!"
Great. Now, they just had to hope that the lightning within the clouds wasn't particularly interested in the duo. Not that Kuu actually seemed overly concerned about the situation!

The thunderstorm was exactly as vicious as Maia had predicted. Their entrance was heralded by a loud clap of thunder, Pumpkinmon's cackling laughter barely audible within the crackle. The clouds moved as if inviting Maia and Kuu in, drifting on the breeze in a fashion that soon left them surrounded by a thick, pillowy greyness. They would disperse if Kuu flew through them, but for each cloud that dispersed there would seem to be another four or five behind it. What was once the wide open skies was now a mess of grey, and if Kuu was having trouble picking out directions before he'd be having even more of a hard time now.
For a while the thunderstorm didn't seem like it would be too bad. While Maia's vision would be completely consumed by the clouds and her ears would ring with the sound of thunder, there didn't seem to actually be any lightning.
Then, as if right on cue, the grey clouds all glowed a blinding white. Thunder boomed louder now than it had ever before, and lightning began haphazardly arcing from cloud to cloud. Interestingly enough, while it was dangerously close to Maia, it seemed to make a point of never actually hitting her. At times it would bend and twist around Kuu, as if trying to coil around her, but even the closest of calls would never actually lead to a direct hit. Perhaps Maia was getting really lucky. Or perhaps this was a haunted house and not a literal deathtrap. Regardless, this lightning was striking way too quickly and way too closely for comfort.
Between the lightning strikes, perhaps Maia's raw ears would be able to pick up on a few more sounds. To the east, a rapid tinkling sound echoed through the air. The sound was surprisingly harsh yet surprisingly light, as if a bell was being rung just a little too hard. To the west there was the sound of grinding gears, often starting up right before another burst of lightning. South and to the west was mostly quiet, but occasionally bouts of hearty laughter burst out of nowhere. It was so merry that it even seemed to overwhelm the sound of the lightning. South and to the east was far more consistent of a sound, but also far more grating of one. It was an insectlike buzzing, constantly serving as an undercurrent even as the myriad other sounds fought to overwhelm it.
Of course, the longer Maia sat and thought, the more quickly the lightning would start to crash down. A strike every thirty seconds would soon become a strike every twenty, then a strike every ten. Sticking around for too long could get very risky very fast.
