Another day of school, another--Oh. Shoot.
Amber eyes flickered open as the leg of her chair was jolted with a kick. From behind her, a girl hissed, "were you seriously sleeping?"
Maia cringed slightly, trying to subtly brush her hair out of her face. "I was just, uh." Was just, what? Up too late fighting with a digital fox? Exhausted from running around a different world, several days in a row? There really wasn't an excuse that could be used for dozing off in her final class! Lately, it seemed like this was always happening. The teen really needed to keep an eye on her grades, before they started slipping again.
"Well, you're welcome. The bell rang," the other student mumbled, as she slid out of her own seat, and placed a couple pages worth of notes on Maia's desk. "I swear, I need to start charging you for borrowing my stuff."
Well, it wasn't like the blonde had asked for these notes! But, there was only a quiet, "thanks," followed up with a stifled yawn. After a few moments, the girl rose from her seat, and began shuffling to the door. The teacher paid little mind, almost seeming to avoid eye contact. Or, was it Maia avoiding eye contact? Maybe, a little of both. Regardless, the tamer left the room without confrontation, and wandered into the halls. With a sigh, Maia checked her phone. No messages. On the bright side, that meant her afternoon was probably clear. On the downside, she really needed to study.
Still sleepily wandering the halls, the teen began to search for the library in the building. Maybe she would actually spend some time there, to work on her homework. Or, she'd just stare at the door, then go home. It was hard to tell what she'd feel like once she actually got there.

"Save me, Kai Haimura-sama! You're my only hope!"
The overly melodramatic youth currently prostrate Kai was known as Haruki Yuuto... And despite everything, he could be considered to be a friend.
"Allow me to get this straight. You, due to goofing around, failed the test in a miserable fashion. As such, you have to take a remedial exam. Now, with that exam tomorrow, you're begging me to teach you... On account of you goofing around instead of studying."
"Exactly right!" Haruki Yuuto exclaimed shamelessly, bouncing back to his feet.
Kai sighed. "Alright. Fine. Let's get this over with" So saying, he gripped Yuuto's forearm tightly, and began dragging him off towards the library. It may appear comedic to an onlooker, but the fact was- If Kai didn't maintain a strong grip at all times, Yuuto was more than likely to wander off.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, a certain Partner Digimon was... Acting normally. Which, to anyone who knew him, meant bad things were to follow.
"Kuuurooo! I'm booooooored!"
"When are you not, Shiro?" The black Digimon who was curled up on the bed retorted.
"There was that time in the Digital World! But that was ages ago!"
It had been months since their partner, Kai, had stopped going to the digital world entirely. It wasn't entirely out of the blue- Dangerous things had been happening one after the other, and Kai was falling behind in his duties in the real world. All it took was one too many close encounters that were slightly too close, and he was forced to reconsider his priorities.
Why was it that he had wanted to explore the Digital World in the first place? What quality of it had made him so drunk on himself that he ignored the danger? He didn't know the answer to that- But there was one thing he did know. He wouldn't be going back. Even if Shiro hated him for it, that would be better than watching him be deleted.
What he didn't entirely realize was this- That Shiro was incapable of hating Kai. What the white Digimon hated was being cooped up inside. In that sense, it was a miracle it had taken this long for things to come to a head.
There was a loud sound of glass shattering. Kuro was startled from her rest. Shiro was nowhere to be seen... But there was a large hole in the window that hadn't been there previously.
"Oh no..."

Finally reaching the library, the blonde girl stared at the door. Did she really want to study? No, not at all. Should she? Most definitely. But, the idea of going home and trying to get proper sleep was also tempting! Checking her phone again, Maia let out a sigh. One text, simply harassing her about not spending time with her friends after school again. She could always do that. Seeing normal people had to be more fun than studying.
Rocking on her heels, Maia bit her lip, before letting out a huff. "Fine," she mumbled, to nobody in particular, before opening the door to the library. She needed to pass her classes, after all! She didn't need to socialize!
Still, even within the entrance of the room, the girl was hesitant. Why was it so hard to convince herself to study for once? She had to do this! Or, find some sort of distraction to get herself out of it.
And, as if to give the girl an excuse such as that, when she leaned out the door again, a familiar face caught Maia's eye. Though, he seemed to be on a mission, with another person literally in tow. Oh well. A distraction was a distraction, and she couldn't be picky! Hopefully, he wasn't going to be irritated if she caused him to deviate from whatever his path was. "Kai?" Please don't ignore her. Not having seen her neighbor in a while, this had to be a sign that she wasn't supposed to be studying! "Uh," then, taking a look to his friend that was being along, she felt the need to inquire, "what are you doing?"
At home, Kuu was sitting on his tamer's desk, peering out the window. Much as he always did, when she left him at home. Where was she? Maia shouldn't be allowed to leave the little fox unattended for more than five minutes at a time! Seeing movement across the street, the Digimon perked up. Oh! What was happening over there? Did he need to be there? Kai's house was probably so much more fun, after all! Paws began to scramble at a small gap in the bedroom window, trying to pull it up enough to at least poke his head out.
Then again, if the rookie could fit his head out the window, what would stop him from exiting the house, entirely? Shoving his nose into the gap, as he managed to push the window open a little further, the Kudamon began to shout out, "hey! Hey, up here! I'm stuck!"

"Ah, Maia." Kai said, with an awkward quirk to his tone. That was, of course, due to the twin facts that Maia was his neighbor and a fellow Digimon Tamer. Well, he said fellow... But Kai was retired from that life. He was done. No more.Still, as someone involved... And being with someone not involved, that is to say, Haruki Yuuto, it was slightly awakward for him.
"Uwaah! Bishoujo! How dare you keep all the beautiful ladies to yourself, you greedy bastard!"
The cries of a lonely soul erupted from behind Kai. Kai sighed. It wasn't like there were that many girls around him! Especially since he left the life of a Tamer behind him. The nigh daily incidents had stopped entirely, too. If it weren't for the furballs back home, he could even say that his life was back to normal. Normal enough, at any rate.
"Be polite, Yuuto. This is Maia, my neighbor. Maia, this is Haruki Yuuto. He sits next to me. I'll be tutoring him for the remedial exam he has to take tomorrow. What are you up to?"
The white Digimon named Shiro looked like a cat. It wasn't just for show. With a leap, a quick dash across the road, and several more leaps, it was only a second before he stood in front of his friend. "Heya Kuu!"
With a quick nip and no warning, Shiro grabbed the back of the other Digimon's neck, and yanked him out.
"I'm going on an adventure! Wanna join me!?"
Meanwhile, back at Kai's room, Kuro slunk her way through the hole Shiro had made. She knew her brother well- There was no way he would come back quietly. The only thing she could do would be to keep him under control until Kai found them. And she had no doubt that Kai would find them- She just wasn't sure how long it would take.
"This is going to be a looooooong day," she muttered under her breath.

Well, Kai certainly didn't sound thrilled to see Maia. This might have bothered the blonde, if not for the fact that Kai rarely seemed happy to see her! Pondering on this for a moment, the tamer had to consider that, maybe, he didn't actually like her. After all, it wasn't like the boy had any reason to even associate with Maia. In fact, she just seemed to make him uncomfortable every time.
"Bish-" the word was drawn out, slowly, and ever-so curiously, "-oujo?" What was this other guy going on about? With a blank expression, she could only imagine why the stranger was calling Kai greedy. It wasn't like he was literally hiding pretty girls in his closet. Or, maybe he was. But, Maia didn't care to know that much about Kai! Though, it seemed any potential to realize there was potential compliment to this outburst went completely over her head.
Folding her hands in front of her, the American girl gave a tiny bow, which was really more of a nod. "It's, uh, nice to meet you?" Why was she never really sure if these were nice encounters? The questioning voice was quick to turn to slightly embarrassed, as she glanced back at the library door. "I was considering studying," the teen admitted, awkwardly. Maybe, if the boys were going to be there as well, it wouldn't feel quite as awful? Shuffling one of her feet, Maia reached up to lightly scratch the back of her neck, "I've been out of the house a lot, lately. Trying to keep my grades up this time." Being in public made it far harder for Maia to just flat out say that she had been finally getting around to exploring the Digital World properly. Oh well. She assumed that would be conveyed. "Would you, uh, mind if I sat with you both?"
There was a bubble and gargle sound that came from the fox's throat, as he was yanked out from the window. But, still, freedom! Yes! "You're like a hero!" Kuu cheered, as he regained his composure. Not that there was much to ever lose or gather. Ears perked up, as the Digimon heard the magic word. "Adventure? I love adventures!" Oh, wasn't that the truth? The Kudamon couldn't be a hero without going on adventures, after all!
"Where are we going? What are we doing?" With a bounce, Kuu seemed all for this idea. As long as he was home by dinner. Or breakfast. Or some sort of time involving food. After all, Dad made great toast! "Adventure, away!" Dramatic tone, and all, Kuu was definitely going to be along for the ride with this one. It had been forever since he got to play with Shiro! Oh, and Kuro too.

Kai may not be the brightest bulb in the box, but he wasn't the dimmest either. He caught on immediately to what Maia meant. He wanted to tell her off, to warn her of the danger... But then again, she probably already knew. Kai was the one who had ignored the danger, ignored the risks. Maia was smarter than he was, a better Tamer than he had ever been. If she felt she could take on the dangers, then so be it.
The one who answered her, however, was not Kai. "Of course! There is always room for beautiful ladies at our table!" The look he shot Kai was one of pleading, begging him not to contradict. "Why not." Kai shrugged. One person or two, it wouldn't make much of a difference."Let's get a table."
So saying, he pushed open the doors to the library- Ignoring the look of gratitude on Yuuto's face.
"Like a hero? You ain't seen nothing yet!" Shiro crowed. His pride was rising to a peak.
"Oh, brother." sighed the black creature on the other roof, who simply could not see this ending well.
Shiro's face scrunched up in an excessively cute manner.Where and what? He hadn't thought that far ahead! "I know! Let's go to school! That's where Kai's at! We can take him along, too!"
Contrary to how it may seem, Shiro was not attempting to change the subject. he was merely distracted from the question by the greatness of his own idea! Without waiting for a response, he began to bound off... In the complete opposite direction from Kai's high school. Kuro smoothly followed him, but felt no need to correct his navigation.

Amber eyes shifted to the non-Tamer. While Maia would have much preferred a chance to talk to Kai in private, it wasn't like she had planned any of this to begin with! If the girl would just visit her neighbor once in a while, it wouldn't feel so out of place to try to have a normal conversation with him for once! And, frankly, Yuuto seemed a bit eccentric.
Still, after only a second, the blonde had to look up to the ceiling panels, then to a wall. Really, anything to avoid eye contact. "You're, uh, full of compliments," she pointed out, trying to avoid sounding out of place. Maia barely even knew this guy's name! In fact, she'd probably forget it before the end of the week. But, at the same time, it was kind of flattering. Maybe. Curse weird social situations!
While the tamer had plenty of responses to 'why not,' she chose to keep the opinions to herself. She just couldn't shake the feeling that Kai wasn't a fan of her, and that she was simply annoying him. Not that this would get mentioned, either! Instead, she simply murmured a, "thanks," before moving to follow the boys into the library.
If only Maia were here to see the face that Shiro had just made. Kuu could imagine that she would appreciate it. Being a fox monster, however, he was unable to understand the adorableness of the expression. Ah well! It was something he knew his tamer would probably coo over, and would have to remember to try to imitate the face scrunch later on! "Maia's at school, too! It'll be a party!" Oh, did Kuu love parties!
Not that he had ever been invited to one!
Now it was the Kudamon's turn to scrunch his own face, trailing slightly behind Shiro, to look to Kuro. "Is this the right way?" Kuu swore that Maia always went the other way! In fact, he'd gone to school with her plenty of times! But, what if he had dozed off on each trip, and didn't know the real route? Plus, Shiro was smart! He probably knew the best way to the school, anyway!

"I strive to please" Haruki Yuuto gave a flamboyant bow. Kai just rolled his eyes. Some people never changed. He grabbed his classmate by the ear. "Come on, Romeo. Focus on the task at hand. Wouldn't want to fail the-"
Kai was interrupted by Haruki twisting around and clamping his hand over Kai's mouth. "Shh. No talking about the emedial-ray est-tay in front of the pretty lady!" As if he hadn't completely given himself away with that. Kai just grabbed his "friend"'s wrist and pulled his hand away, letting out a sigh. "Whatever you say. Now let's go find a table." Still holding Haruki's wrist, Kai dragged him off to a table in the back of the library.
He knew better than to think Yuuto would be quiet. All he could do was limit how much it hurt others. Assuming that Maia folllowed, Kai would look to her and ask, "Alright, what subject do you need help in?" He didn't bother asking Haruki. The answer was, after all, "All of them."
"Of course it's the right way! It smells right!"
By which, of course, Shiro meant that it smelled either delicious or interesting. It was the same reason he always managed to get separated from Kai- His sense of direction was simply dictated by his nose. And there was no way he'd be hearing a word against it.
Kuro figured that, as long as she was keeping an eye on the two troublemakers, she may as well try getting along with Kuu. Maia's partner usually played with Shiro while Kuro did what she did best- Nap. "How have you been, Kuu? It has been a while since we met you or your tamer."

Maia wasn't necessarily sure if it was a good thing that Haruki seemed so friendly. But, she wasn't going to say anything on the subject. After all, she had invited herself to join them. Ah, maybe that had been a bad idea. The blonde was still fairly certain that Kai really didn't like her. And, now she was making him feel obliged to let her come along with them to study. It even looked like she might be a problem for the learning process of his friend!
Pretending she didn't hear anything that Haruki was trying to shush Kai over, the girl simply followed them to one of the tables. To the question, though, the first response was, "probably most of them, at this point," under her breath. Then, there was a pause as she registered that, yes, Maia had just said that aloud. Crud. Tensing, there was a quick, "Uh, n-no. I'm just trying to catch up on everything. I, uh, think it's mostly just Biology and Classical Literature." Trying to dismiss the severity of her slacking, the blonde forced a smile. "You're here to help your friend's test, not my poor time management skills."
Who was Kuu to argue with Shiro? The white cat was older than he was! That meant he knew more stuff! Maybe. Probably? Definitely. There was no way anyone could know more than Shiro, when it came to this kind of thing! Kuu bet that Shiro knew his way around all of Japan!
The little Digimon was a little surprised when he actually heard Kuro address him. What, was this some alternate universe? Whatever. He was going to take the opportunity! "I've been great!" Sort of. "I found an armor-digi-egg-thing, so I can have wings! Flying is fun! And! Oh. I got Maia grounded. But it's okay! Her mom says I'm not a demon, so she's not grounded anymore. Isn't that great?" Was there a faint tone of nervousness in there? Kuu wasn't capable of that! Everything else sounded ridiculously bouncy. Just like how Kuu was walking! Bounce, bounce, bounce...
"How've you guys been? Where have you been? I've wanted to play for forever, but we didn't see you anywhere!" Maybe this kind of response was a little more rambling than Kuro had been expecting out of the Kudamon. Actually, it shouldn't be. The twin should know too well that Kuu didn't know how to shut up or calm down.

Kai missed whatever it was Maia had initially started to say. He was about to ask her to speak up, when she did so anyways. Biology and classical lit, got it. How nice, to have someone who knew what they were doing for a change. "Haruki. Sit. Stay." Kai pointed to Haruki, then to the chair "Dog ja nai!" Haruki called back in a hideous mixture of bad English and Japanese, even as he obeyed the command.
"Trust me, it's not worth fighting him when he's like this" Haruki whispered conspiratorially to Maia. Kai ignored him and asked, "You have the books you need, I presume? Start studying, I need to get some for him."
As he walked away, he mentally smacked himself. Start studying? You really couldn't have put it in a better way? He sighed. This was going to be a loooong afternoon.
"Armor digivolution, huh?" Kuro replied, in a voice that said she knew more than Kai did on the subject. For example, the fact that her and her brother would never attain armor forms, as well as the reason why. But that is a story for another thread.
She was equally as forthcoming when it came to answering Kuu's question. "It is... A long story. Kai... Grew concerned for our safety. With good reason." She was trying to put Kai in the best light possible, without lying. It was hard, considering... He had essentially locked her and Shiro up in a small room for several months. Even if his intentions were good, it was hard to accept. Just imagine, being stuck with Shiro! If she were anyone else, Kuro'd have gone mad!

Maia watched the two act in a master-pet sort of manner. Man, their dynamic was a little odd. Oh well, that really wasn't her business. "When he's like what?" The tamer hummed, curiously. After all, Kai didn't seem particularly different than normal, as far as she was concerned. It wasn't really like the girl knew much about her neighbor, regardless, so maybe it was abnormal.
Either way, she nodded to Kai, and made a gesture to her books. She couldn't be expected to be that ill prepared! Even if the girl had been debating on skipping her studies!
Start... studying. Right. Okay. The blonde tilted her head slightly, trying to figure out if this was, in fact, how Kai always talked. Amber eyes shifted to Haruki, covering the side of her mouth in a false-whispering manner. "Are you referring to him being very commanding?" Okay, now that it was vocalized, there was no doubt that Maia hadn't actually seen Kai do commands. He couldn't even control his own Digimon!
...Then again, neither could Maia.
And, speaking of Digimon...
"Concerned? Maia's always concerned!" How did that make it any different than normal? Digimon were cuddly war-machines, practically! "Did you guys almost," Kuu paused, to gasp dramatically, "die?"
Though, Kuu wouldn't have minded having been trapped in a room with Shiro. All the fun they would have! Like right now! This was fun! Sort of. Actually, Kuu still had no idea where they were going. Hopefully, someplace with food. Yes. Food was good. But, for now, conversation with Kuro would work just fine. After all, how often did he get to talk to the sisterly digimon, instead? She usually had no desire to do anything with him!

"You know, when he's..." Deciding that a visual demonstration was required, first pulled back on his eyebrows, then down on the corners of his mouth. "Grrr" He growled to complete the impression. If Kai had been there, Haruki would find a book connecting with his skull. He probably knows that, considering he had waited for Kai to be out of earshot.
"Or, yeah. Commanding. That works too." Was Haruki pouting just because his unnecessary and silly caricature had been rendered pointless? Yes, probably. As always, he bounced back with no delay. "So, Kai's neighbor, eh? Childhood friend, then, or just moved in recently?"
What an unexpectedly serious question. Is Haruki feeling alright?
Kuro opened her mouth to begin to speak. Shiro was the one who cut in, however. "Nonsense! Shiro is the strongest there is! There's simply no way I would die!" It seemed the white Digimon had been paying attention after all. Obviously, the whole topic was bringing up sore wounds- Namely, Kai's lack of faith. They were partners! How could Kai even consider that Shiro might lose!?
Kuro merely shook her head and whispered softly to Kuu, "Unfortunately, Kai does not share Shiro's confidence. We came out ahead of that specific encounter, but he has refused to have anything to do with the Digital World ever since. As far as I go, I am not altogether concerned... But it hurts me to see my brother and my partner in such a state."

Well, that impression was certainly unforgettable. The blonde found herself snickering, trying to imagine Kai making that exact face. Oh, jeez. That was almost impossible to think of! Then again, it was just for dramatics, which seemed to be Haruki's stronger point.
"Semi-recently," the teen debated, trying to think of how long she had been in Japan, now. "Kai didn't speak to me, until I had lived there for half a year, though." Then again, she was at fault too! If she had just gotten off her computer and gone outside one and a while, maybe they'd have met sooner!
Then again, that was improbable. The girl was still fairly certain that her neighbor found her more of a pest than anything else. Amber eyes shifted, to look toward where her neighbor had gone off to. Lips parted only to snap tightly shut, and twist into a small smile, before looking back to Haruki. "Why do you ask?"
"Yeah! Shiro is the strongest!" Kuu cheered, with an extra bounce. Someday, Kuu would be as strong as Shiro was! That was a fact!
But, it was still interesting to see that Kuro was so willing to continue sharing. Kuu kind of liked this more friendly version of the black weasel! Lowering his voice, to try to match Kuro's, he had to inquire, "do you want to get him to go back?" For Shiro! Man, Kuu wished that he had a sibling! Especially one that would watch out for him!
Then again, that would mean attention would have to be split between him and another Digimon. Maia was his! He didn't want to share! Retracting the thought of wanting a sibling, immediately!

Haruki Yuuto nods slowly while stroking an imaginary beard. "I see, I see." What exactly he sees is unclear. Yuuto is weird like that. Shouldn't he be at least pretending to study? If Kai were back yet, he'd be in for a smack to the back of the head. Unfortunately, the sheer number of books that Kai will need to teach him means that Maia's salvation will not be coming soon. She will be trapped with the eternally chatty Haruki Yuuto for the foreseeable future.
"Ah, I'm just making small talk. Don't worry about it, don't worry about it~ But, Haruki dropped to a conspiratorial whisper, "Have you noticed Kai acting strangely lately? I think he's hiding something, but I don't know what it is." Very perceptive, Haruki. But which of Kai's secrets has his friend stumbled upon? There are so very many of them.
Kuro did not know how to respond. Did she want Kai to go back? No... He had already been put into too much danger, as had her brother. His decision was not wrong, even if Shiro disagreed. Yet at the same time, seeing Kai so subdued, so unwilling to take even the slightest risk... That was nearly as bad as seeing him injured. I... Do not know. Kuro admitted to her neighbor. It was one of the hardest admissions she had ever made, priding herself of always having the answers.
In this case, it may be that there simply is no right answer.
So she decides to change the topic. "Follow me, you two. I know a shortcut." Will Kuu recognize a topic change when he hears one? Who knows. For know, Shiro just chirps a, "Okay! Let's go!" and follows Kuro as she takes a carefully calculated route back- A route meant to not be obvious when it turns the three around, for the sake of her brother's pride. She really should stop spoiling him.

Honestly, Maia didn't mind the chatty aspect of the other teen. At least he was friendly! And, maybe that was a sign that someone didn't find her just awful. Though, the girl had absolutely no idea what Haruki could "see." What was he talking about? Or, could he just not stand the thought of silence?
But, it really did feel like Haruki had a lot of questions about Kai. Wasn't he supposed to be Kai's friend? "Strangely?" Of course Maia didn't notice these kind of things! Kai barely talked to her! "How recent is 'lately'?" After all, there was only one thing that Maia could think that he was hiding.
What?! Kuro didn't know something? That seemed weird! "But I thought you were super smart or something!" Kuu gasped, yellow eyes growing wide. Something just wasn't okay with an answer like that from the other rookie! He wanted to offer her assistance on knowing a proper answer, but what kind of assistance did a silly fox have available?
But, it seemed that the black rookie didn't want to discuss this much further, as she began helping her brother with a shortcut. "Why're we cutting shorts?" Kuro was a mysterious creature, indeed! Either way, the white fox bounced after her, trying to leap around Shiro in the most playful fashion possible.
