Ruminations of a Little Bear [Tetsu]

The Mainframe Hills were one of Brad's most favourite places to ponder how things work in the digital world. A peaceful setting with soft grasses and weedy flowers covering the rolling plains, where one could see for miles on top of the crests.
Here the Bearmon was sitting down in the midday sun, looking in the direction of the vast forest of the Eastern Timberlands. He didn't have that much on his person, just his baseball cap and a red t-shirt. The fur on his face and his lower body was being gently blown by the wind atop the hill as his thoughts inevitably moved toward his stomach.
Food wasn't normally a problem for him. It normally was around in large enough amounts for consumption. However, very rarely did he find food that he truly enjoyed. The sweet taste of honey was something that he longed for in particular. However, getting it was not so simple a task in the digital world.
Brad remembered the story about the legend of a Flymon in the forest who hoarded a motherload of honey. And if anyone tried to steal it, their last words were normally something to the degree of "Aargh the lasers! The lasers! They burn!"
He was aware that honey was especially rare in the hills but somewhat more common in the forest. Yet, the forest was also more dangerous, so, obtaining the honey would be a risk, one that Brad wasn't keen to take.
However, he had heard stories about Earth. Apparently honey was plentiful there - available in stores where one could simply bring a jar full of it to a counter, pay for it, and it was theirs. Such a simpler prospect. No adventures through dangerous jungles, no mortal combat with angry insect digimon, just a simple transaction. But getting the money in the first place? Now that was a whole new problem in itself.
Brad hummed as he got back onto his hind feet, scratching his side under his t-shirt. His shaggy grey and white fur was covered with grass seeds. It often happened here, but he didn't mind. Apparently it was good for the grass data to cling to digimon and spread out across the land. So Brad was content to carry the seeds to wherever he might end up today.
"Now then" he murmured to himself. "I wonder what's there for lunch?" he made his way down the hill.

Dandelion seeds flutters along the wind... and incidentally, that's how a very small Popomon also flies to this place from the village of beginning. It drifted very very very leisurely in look for a partner that it felt calling him. However, it's not a secret that a Popomon weights a lot more than dandellion seed. He ended up landing softly on a place still far enough from Terminus. He sighed. Oh well, at least he's not really alone in here...
...There's a Bearmon. He hope he's friendly.
"'ello mate," he greeted, trying to reach out to the Bearmon. "Think that you know where the way to Trailmon terminal around here is?" he asked. The Popomon looks calmer than the other, probably lot calmer.
Shishidou Tetsushi, 11 years old, Recently he's just moved to Shibuya. Honestly someone only needs one sort of ticket in Hokkaido, but looking at the station map...
...Tokyo people are scary, he thought. He was even stopped at the automatic gate and panicked because he didn't know that it was meant to be automatic and he can pay with Suica card that his grandfather gave him. Instead, he picked the ticket and bought it manually.
...There was someone who came out of the machine to help you...
...It was mind boggling for the 11 years old. The cultural shock just too much. It's like he's in another world! Is this still Japan!? It's unthinkable for him!
AND TOKYO PEOPLE NEED TO DO THIS EVERY. FREAKING. DAY? Father, Mother, I'm starting to respect my peers. Then again, what's this object? It leads me here... It seems like a toy, but is it a treasure hunting toy? Well, lot of Tokyo people walks with their cellphone... those are cellphone, right? I guess that means it does lead somewhere..

Brad's ears twitched from under his hat as he heard a voice speaking to him. Was it a trick of the wind? Or was it someone speaking to him? And, it seemed, the latter was true. He looked down to see a little Popomon speaking to him.
"Oh, hello there" Brad said, smiling down at him. "You would like to go to the Trailmon Terminal?" the Bearmon repeated. "Well, certainly, I can take you there if you like. It's this way" he walked toward the east. A small platform was visible in the distance. "Are you alright? This is certainly a little ways from Primary Village. Did you get on a Trailmon and get lost?".
That was what Brad knew what happened to most baby digimon. They generally didn't travel, unless they had reasons that were compelling them to. He hoped to know that the Popomon would be alright if this was the case.
"Do you have a name, Popomon?" Brad asked, curiously.

"Yes, the nearest platform is fine," the baby said. Actually, felt like he'll meet his partner there. The Popomon followed the Bearmon while hopping about. The wind is slightly too much, but it's bearable. At times it blew forward, so he could feel the push on his body. It was pleasant. The Bearmon asked if he's fine because this is far from the Primary Village.
"Oh no, sir, I was escorted by a mercenary while trying to get to Terminus. After some time, he was going 'oh fuck this' and ran. I tried to do the rest myself, but it was impossible. i met a kind yet foul mouthed Flymon though. That lady sounded a bit lonely so I accompany her for a while. She then took me somewhere quite close to where you was, until somehow she said that her alarm is blaring, so she cannot take me any further. She flew back so fast and last time I saw is purple streak of lasers."
The Popomon thought for a while....
"...They called me Gryz. An eccentric Babamon once visited Village of Beginning and said that I was meant to be a Belphemon. When I said eccentric, she's really eccentric. She tried to give prediction to our future, but the Elecmon there thinks it's just bogus. He found that prediction seem to be awfully tailored... Like, I was supposed to have human partner, and I will become a Bearmon that will stay in Gryzmon form, then suddenly becomes Demon Lord in the end. When many asked if I would bring about destruction..."
...Gryz's face turned into the calm =w= after a pause, then copied the tone of the Babamon.
"No, he'll still be a cuddly teddy. That's why the Elecmon named me Gryz, because it's just that fun."
OK, he's in the train now, but... but wait, where is this going? He saw a lot of animals he never saw before in that train... huh? Could it be... that he's lost? Oh boy...? Wait, maybe this is meant to go somewhere... like somewhere with nursery? Or a big field? Is this some sort of 'bring your pet' day at school? His heart hurts from thinking about it, but before he knew it, the train already moving...

So then, it seemed the nearest platform was their destination. Brad patiently kept a pace that Popomon could keep up with. Then Popomon said that he in fact sought the services of a mercenary to escort him to Terminus City.
"Hmph, what a lousy digimon" Brad said, sniffing with disgust over the story of the mercenary. "Well if he's just going to say 'fuck this' about a simple job like that, he won't be much worth as a mercenary for much longer I expect".
The Bearmon said the swearword without bothering about it. To him it was just another word. The next part of the story involved a kind yet foul-mouthed Flymon. And what Popomon said next kind of confirmed the rumours about Flymons and lasers. "Oh dear..." was all Brad could say on the matter.
Then the Popomon said his name was Gryz. An unusual name for such a small digimon, but apparently an eccentric Babamon came to the village and said it was so. Well, Brad was slightly in touch with the powers of the earth so he could respect seers such as her. And if in her wisdom she had named this digimon Gryz, then he had no means to object to it. "Gryz is a nice name" he said. "Well, my name is Brad, you don't need to call me Sir or Bearmon" he said with a smile at the baby digimon.
Then Gryz said that he was destined to have a human partner. "Ah, so that's why you wanted to go to Terminus?" Brad asked. And that Gryz would be a Bearmon too when he reached Rookie level. "Heh, I see. Hopefully that comes true, I think being a Bearmon is quite fun... however I'll wager you'll be bigger than me".
Brad was a little unsettled by the prediction of the Demon Lord, but gave a half-smile when it seemed that he would still always be a cuddly teddy.
"Well wouldn't that be a sight to see?" he asked, chuckling.

"Well, can't really blame him honestly. He wasn't even paid in... uh 'proper' cash. You know. It's mostly coins so he probably think we're looking down on him. That and the instruction was probably not suited for guy like him. I mean, it was: Get a baby safely to Terminus. If it were me, I'd do it still, but apparently there's mercenary pride or something..." Gryz muttered.
Still, he didn't forget to add a little gem: "...Well, if that guy happened to loiter around the forest of the vespid lady, I hope he got paralyzed. She expresses great annoyance at theft that came to her place and didn't even bothered to knock and immediately steal stuff. I mean, a baby's life is still a life, so technically he should probably feel how it feel to be attacked like that." He said all of those with such a calm face.
"Ah, nice to meet you, then, Brad. I'd really love to be a Bearmon as kind as you are. Nice shirt by the way, it's rare for me to see someone wearing a shirt. Maybe I'll try wearing one too. Also, I was going there, but apparently something inside of me telling me to wait in this platform instead. Like, he'll come sooner or later, that sort of feeling, see?"
Gryz just turned around to his senior and made a calm =w= face.
"...Well, I would love to be a cuddly demon lord, just to tell them that not all demons are bad and scary."

"Hmph. Well it's still a disgraceful way to treat someone in my books" Brad said, sniffing through his nose in disgust. "Of course baby digimon can't pay full price, but honestly, we all start off as babies, can they not give you some sort of allowance?"
Individuals who mis-treated baby digimon made Brad quite angry. In fact it was pretty much the only thing that would get his temper up. Ordinarily he was a calm, peaceful bear, but when he saw babies being mistreated, out came the inner wild beast.
"Well, I hope he learned his lesson from her" Brad said when Gryz mentioned that the mercenary was loitering around the forest about the laser-shooting Flymon. While he hadn't actually attacked the Popomon, still, abandoning him would be 'mistreatment' in Brad's books.
His mood was lifted when Gryz complimented his shirt. "Really? You think so?" he asked, plucking at it. "Heh, well, a human said I looked cute in it once, so I decided to keep it. It's quite easy to wash too, much better than putting up with dirt in my fur" he chuckled.
Brad nodded when Gryz said that he just had a feeling that he'll meet his partner at the platform. "Well then. How about I accompany you to Terminus City?" he asked. "I mean, I've been meaning to go there myself lately. And we can wait for your partner together"
He chuckled again when Gryz agreed that he'd like to be a cuddly demon lord. "Yes, that's the spirit! I believe that digimon should be who they want to be, and not be constrained by what they digivolve into" he declared. "I've met very nice Virus attribute digimon, as well as horrible Vaccine digimon. And of course vice versa, as the humans say... but if you evolve into a demon lord and use that power for good, I think that would be a wonderful thing".

"Disgraceful indeed," Gryz said, finally agreeing. "Eh, but I'm not too concerned over his fate. I mean, if I managed to get safely to Terminus, I can actually ask back for some reimbursement. By the way, it's paid in full, just in coins, which actually made it more disgraceful if you ask me.... well, if there is a breach of contract, I'm sure that the mercenary will be heavily punished and I will get more money... but I don't think that really justifies it, I think? I was just born, afterall... about a week now that I think of it?"
"Hmmm, dirt are OK, if you ask me," Gryz said. "However what's not OK is probably like blood or honey or sauce... those be damned. Oh, and milk. Don't forget milk. They easily smells so bad when they fell to your fur, and it get stinky... really stinky, really really fast at it too. While I don't mind the taste, if I got any on my fur, I'd rather jump to the lake immediately. I got scolded by Elecmon though."
He wondered if he really should go to Terminus?
"...Mmm, how to say this... I don't mind, certainly there are lot of place that can be used to mentor my partner... but somehow I have feeling that he's already halfway here..."
...as if on cue, a Trailmon ejected a black haired boy from its insides, tossing him quite far to the air, but yet the boy managed to did a roll and stand on his feet.
"WHAT'S THE PROBLEM WITH THIS TRAIN!?"
"WHAT'S YOUR PROBLEM, KID!? NOT KNOWING WHERE YOUR DESTINATION IS WHILE GIVING VAGUE DIRECTION, AND YOU'RE NOT EVEN PAYING! I'M GOING BACK!"
"...Welp, that's the guy."

"Well, it would be a good idea to get your money back at least. One can never have too much of it" Brad said. If he didn't get the service, he shouldn't have to pay. "Ah, so you hatched a week ago?" the Bearmon asked, curiously. "I think I'm a year old myself. Or two. It's hard to keep track of things when I don't know how to read clocks" he chuckled.
True, dirt wasn't too much of a problem. His feet were quite dirty from walking around without shoes for one thing. But he nodded with agreement on the other points. "Yes. Having honey in your fur is terrible, especially after it's been washed" he said.
Oh? Gryz's partner was already halfway here? Brad didn't know how he could possibly know that... until the Trailmon arrived and seemed to physically eject a young human from it. "Oh. I see" Brad said. "Well then. Let's go down and meet him!"
Brad walked down the hill toward the human, smiling at him. As usual the human was a bit taller than him, but that was okay. Most humans were taller than Brad.
"Hello!" Brad said to him, not getting too close in case he would be scared. "Are you alright?" he asked, hoping that being pushed off the train didn't hurt him too much.

"Mmmm, money makes world go round, yes," the Popomon said calmly. "But I guess competence cannot be bought by money... You're right, I'll probably get it back somehow. If that competence cannot be bought by money, then I should use it for other sort of competence... and yes, I hatched about seven days ago. However, strangely, Elecmon said that I stayed in egg form for about two weeks, far longer than anyone else, so he was getting worried. Funnily, I hatched right when that Babamon came."
Gryz seem to be glad that Brad agreed with him. However, he always made sure to rub himself on soap usually... if he's a Bearmon, he swore that he would have a soap somewhere near him., probably in a small backpack or knapsack. Anyway, he followed Brad to meet his partner.
...It doesn't go quite well though. Tetsu, while knowing that it's strange already from TALKING TRAIN and there's this TALKING BEAR had his eyes widened like a saucer. He rubs Brad's body, feeling his fur, then pinches his cheek lightly, and pat his nose... are? are? It's all real!?
"..."
He proceed to pinch himself on the cheek... IT HURTS!
"....Um.. uh... hi?"
"Don't worry, we understand that you're confused and all, but first, welcome to Digital World."
"Digital... World?"
"Speaking in Layman Term, it's another world."
"...Another world? Jus' like 'dose manga?"
"Oh it's popular in human world, huh? Yeah, that. You're one of that chosen one... but I don't know the detail either," Gryz commented, making a =w= face as usual.

"Is that so?" the Bearmon asked when Gryz said he was within his egg for quite a long time. "Well, that is interesting. Hopefully it doesn't result in anything bad happening, not that I've heard it has of course".
Next was the meeting with the human boy. Brad was surprised at first when he walked up to him and rubbed his fur, but giggled, enjoying the sensation quite a lot. He flinched slightly when he was pinched on the cheek and was about to ask him to stop that, but he made up for it by patting his nose.
"...Is this how humans normally greet people I wonder?" he mused to himself out loud. Then the human pinched himself, and looked like he was in pain. "Er, yes, pinching is normally painful" Brad advised. He stood by while Gryz did the basic introduction. The human seemed to think this was something like a Manga, whatever that was. The Bearmon cleared his throat.
"Well yes, this is a world that is different to your human world" Brad said to Tetsu. "It seems that a lot of humans have been arriving here lately in order to receive digimon partners. I believe Gryz here may be yours" he indicated the Popomon. "And my name is Brad. I don't have any human partners, but I don't mind humans, especially if they pet me like you did" he giggled again.

"Nah, it doesn't seem to have any effect on me," Gryz said truthfully. "Probably if anything I'll be bigger than most? Not even sure over there!"
Returning to that moment, Tetsu was again in shock when the Bearmon spoke. "...Uh... uh, no, I... I was... w-wondering if ya all..." can talk and whether this is real, so he thought, but left it hanging. He looked at Gryz, then at Brad, at Gryz again and at Brad. "....Uh, sorry, but... are you... you two... uh... You know... is it common for a bear and a dandelion to speak?"
"You should toss that out of the window. We're not bear and dandelion per se. Why don't I show you how it's done? Evolve me, Tetsu!"
"Eh? H-how do you know my name?"
"Because we're partnered of course!"
"Then again, how?"
"Eh... it's a feeling sort of thing?"
But before they could even continue, light cocoon wraps the small baby Digimon, and on its wake, a Wanyamon came out.
"Looks like it's a success~" Gryz said with a =w= face as usual. He looked at Brad. "Say Brad? Do you know somewhere close in here that we can use for---"
Too late, Tetsu suddenly already rubbing Brad's stomach after hearing how he likes it when someone rubs his fur like that. He also rubs his head and nose gently, like playing with a dog. Gryz make an awkward -w- face but think it's better to let it be for now.

"Oh gosh" Brad said. "Belphemon is already quite large as it is. Well, hopefully you won't reach the size of a 'world eater'" he chuckled.
Tetsu seemed to be quite dazed. Brad nodded. "Yes, it is fairly common for digimon to talk. We can say lots of interesting things" he said, brightly. Although he couldn't think of a particularly interesting thing to say right now. Oh bother.
Then somehow Tetsu gained the ability to evolve Gryz. That was quite good, it seemed Gryz's Baby II form was a Wanyamon. "Interesting. I was a Tsunomon myself" Brad remarked. Tetsu then approached him. "Now then. What would you like to know about-?" then Tetsu began to rub his belly. "O-oh gosh!"
It felt so good that somehow Brad felt compelled to lay on the ground, giggling as Tetsu petted him. His leg rolled at each stroke. He thoroughly enjoyed it, even if it made his white fur messy. Ah well. And his head and nose too? Brad was beginning to quite like humans. He was happy for it to go on as long as Tetsu wanted.

"Hmmm, I wonder?" Gryz muttered, seem to be quite bothered about it too. "I think I'll be tall enough to tower over the other, but too tall on the other hand would make me a nice pincushion. I'm not quite the tanky guy... Well, I'm tanky, but there's a limit of my tanky, if you got what I meant."
Tetsu seem really really really unconvinced, but the bear and the dandellion in front of him really does do the talking so... well, let's accept it anyway. He decided that. Lot of interesting thing doesn't matter, at this point they're really like human in talking animal body, at least that's how it is to childish Tetsu. Why should he think whether these guys truly felt it as Digimons are some advanced AI (according to theory) or not? He never really tech savvy. Heck, he only surfs net to access farming site! Oh Tetsu....
"Hehe, ya like it~? Gee, ya so fluffy and soft, I really can do this all day long~"
...Somehow, Gryz was looking at that enviously, but the moment Tetsu's hand touched his body, he let out a small purr of pleasure. Soon, Tetsu calmed enough to sat on the ground.
"...Um, so... can ya tell me the basic? I don't really know where to ask."

As the petting session slowed down, Brad's chuckling slowed down, sitting back upright. He was glad that Tetsu seemed to like digimon so much at first sight. And he was glad to have made a good impression. He sat on the grass opposite Tetsu, holding his own feet with his paws and comfortably rocking back and forth gently in a small exercising motion.
Then Tetsu asked if he could just have an explanation of the basics. Brad wondered how to answer that.
"Well, first of all" the Bearmon said, gently. "It seems that this world of ours has reached somewhat of a state of flux. Lots of things are how they shouldn't be, and it appears more and more humans seem to be ending up landing here, becoming partners with digimon".
Brad had somewhat looked into it since his meeting with Albon and Yuuki. "From what I can understand, human emotions are very powerful here. They can strengthen or weaken their partners through the power of their digivice" he said. "So, positive emotions yield good results. So, simply, I would advise to explore the world with Gryz and stay safe. And one day perhaps the digital world will reveal the reason why it has sent for all you humans".
He hoped that this explanation would be good enough. He was happy to tell more if the need arose.
