Days like these were the kind of days that Izanami just could not help but dread. The days where just about everything you could think of goes wrong, and then some.
It was supposed to be a pretty simple night at the Murukami household. With her parents deciding to take a night out to go to a rather fancy restaurant together, it was just she and her older brother left to watch the house. Supposedly just to make sure no one goes and robs the place, her parents tasked her with the job of dusting the house so that it can be vacuumed tomorrow. She would have complained if it had not been that they would get the chance to order some pizza since they were not going anywhere.
The black-haired girl was busy dusting shelves with all manners of old books, picture frames and other assorted family heirlooms; wiping any surface she could find with small dust rags. While not all of it was recognizable, several caught the girl's attention. Somewhat old pictures of a young girl and/or boy dressed up in soccer shirts and shorts, often side by side or being held by several other similarly dressed kids. She remembered each of the days those pictures depicted with astonishing clarity, a slight wisp of nostalgia building up in her chest.
Her attention however would be interrupted by the sound of a loud crunching sound. Slightly startled, the girl's expression turned a bit sour as she stopped dusting momentarily and got up; peeking her head out into the family living room. "You shouldn't go spoiling your appetite Izanagi, pizza guy is probably gonna be here soon!" She would comment in a slightly annoyed voice to the man in a wheelchair, busy stuffing his face with barbecue potato chips.
The bespectacled man let out a small chuckle, eating a chip in righteous rebellion. "Oh Izzy, you should know that they just tell us that so they can keep an eye on what we eat. I have not eaten all day, so I can get away with this." He would say, shaking the bag some in front of Izanami; who rather irritably snatched it out of his hands.
"Do you HAVE to eat it though with your hands? I mean come on, I like potato chips too you know." The girl would quip to her older brother, rolling the bag up. She wasn't always supposed to be the one in charge here, but with her brother's lax nature; it damned well felt like it should at times.

The young man smirked silently as he decided to wheel over to his lapop resting on the living room coffee tale; picking it up and sitting it on his lap. He soon was swiftly browsing the web, a pair of earbuds in his ears.
Somewhat unable to tolerate her brother's nonchalant nature, Izanami stamped her foot on the ground; her face twisted in a scowl. Oh THAT'S how he was going to play huh? What could she have expected from such a lazy deadbeat as he was. "You know, I don't HAVE to work alone you know. There's stuff you can do while in a wheelchair." She would point out to him, knowing full well that being wheelchair-bound did not stop the man from doing most of his daily activities.
"Oh what's that? Sorry, can't hear you right now. Super busy." Izanagi would snarkily lie, fully well having heard his sister's comment. Of course, he damn well knew that it was a lie; and she did too.
"You're a dick Izanagi." The girl would growl as she stormed off, her brother giving a friendly wave as she headed towards the kitchen. She loved her brother to death, but damn if he was not sometimes irritating. Turns out being wheelbound apparently gives you the right to be a bit of a dick. Walking up to the kitchen cabinet, she placing the bag of chips her brother stole back in it's spot. She already had been sidetracked enough as she really needed to get the rest of the house dusted, so she was quick to head back to where she was working.
The den was a bit of a trophy room for the family, every soccer trophy she and Izanagi having ever won from their time in the soccer clubs at school resting there. Taking time to pick up and dust each metallic figure as well as she could. It has been nearly 6 years since a new trophy has been added to the collection, though with still three years left in college; Izanami was hoping to end that streak soon.
About a dozen minutes later, each of the trophies and their little spots on the shelf they rested on were free of dust. About time as the doorbell to their home was rung. Must have been the pizza guy. "YO! Can you go get that?! Must be the pizza!" She would yell out to her deadbeat brother. While he usually was not always the most reliable of people, when food was on the line; he was usually on it.
As she heard the door being opened, muffled sounds of her brother and another speaking with each other; Izanami prepared to move on to the display case in the den. It wasn't as large as their trophy shelf, but it had several very pretty decorations on display. Her mother worked as a geologist, so rare stones or minerals were usually placed here. While most of it to Izanami was just a bunch of dusty rocks, they meant a lot to her mom; so taking care of them was important. As she began to set some of her things down, ready to go eat some food before getting back to work; she noticed that something appeared to be off.

Missing from the shelf was a large ruby gemstone, about the size of a baseball. Of all the pieces on it, it was perhaps the most noteworthy; not cause it was incredibly valuable (though her mother mentioned that it could be sold for quite a pretty penny) but because of the sentimental value it held. Her family got the piece as a sort of "good luck charm" back when Izanagi was still recovering from the accident. Rubies were apparently a ward from danger and promoted vitality or something. Nonetheless, it did worry her seeing the ruby missing from where it was; the dusty spot where it was supposed to be still there.
In a mild panic, Izanami began frantically looking around; hoping to just find the missing gemstone laying on the ground... but to no avail. While she was attempting to calm herself, she was starting to get nervous. It wasn't like it just grew legs and walked off! Neither of her parents would have taken it she was sure, her mother not wanting it to get damaged or scratched in anyway. Izanami knew damn well that she needed to find where it went, else she could get in huge trouble. Her folks would NOT be happy knowing the family's little heirloom was awol.
Swiftly rushing into the kitchen, she saw her brother already getting some mushroom and sausage pizza on a plate. The wheelchair-bound man waved at his sister oblivious to just how much of a panic the girl was. "Oy, pizza's up and ready. Don't dilly dally too long else it'll get cold." He would comment, only then noticing his sister's worried look on her face. While their relationship was strained at times, the two Murukami siblings were very close and usually in sync when something was wrong. "Something's up?
"Yo, you know that ruby we got back when you were in the hospital? It's gone, and I don't know where it is." The girl would speak deadpanly, though it was clear that she was mildly distressed at the moment. "I-I don't where it went. I haven't touched it in months. You don't think someone stole or something?"
Izanagi wheeled over to the kitchen table, placing the plate of pizza he had. It was clear that even he was stumped, a worrying factor for the two of them. "Who could have stole it? I mean, I've got nowhere to go and you don't even have a car. Plus no one has really ever came over here in the past couple of weeks." He'd attempt to reason, there not many possible explanations really."Do you think mom or dad have it?"
Izanami shook her head. Not a likely possibility she felt... Nonetheless, it was making her nervous. What will happen if they notice? Will she be blamed for stealing it? Will she be punished? She's tried so hard to build up her parents' trust, and she didn't want to let it go to waste like this. "I don't know... I mean, I can try and go check their room..."
Taking a moment to clean the lens of his glasses, Izanagi shrugged. "I mean, where else could it be?"
Hopefully still here Izanami thought to herself as she swiftly marched towards the passing hallway, leading to her parents room.

While a mild taboo to just go and look in her parents' room without their permission, Izanami was hard-pressed for answers and didn't really have many options at the moment. That gemstone was way too important to just be missing right now. While she doubted her folks would immediately notice, they being very busy adults and all; they WILL notice eventually.
Why didn't she tell them? Perhaps just cause it would make her look bad. Izanami worked hard on her reputation with both her parents and at school, so she did not want to flub it up now.
Looking around in her parent's bedroom, the girl glanced at the dresser tops and peeked into the closet and underneath the bed. Unfortunately, minutes passed; not even coming close to finding the missing ruby. Izanami was starting to break into a cold sweat. She needed answers damn it, but none were popping up!
Rushing back to the kitchen, her brother was still eating; though for once he was willing to shelve his care-free attitude knowing that his sister was currently feeling under the weather. "Not there?"
Shaking her head, Izanami was starting to get a headache. Things just seemed to fall apart with her the moment something remotely bad happens. "Oh god, what do we do? We can't just tell them that it's gone missing." She would quietly say to herself aloud, beginning to pace back and forth. She took a moment to take a slice of pizza, taking a small bite in the hopes that it would calm her nerves. Cheese and tomato sauce in her mouth offered some mild relief, but she was still in a mild panic.
"Well of course you can. They trust us enough to know that we wouldn't try anything shady with it." Izanagi was quick to mention, trying his best to comfort his sister. Their parents were usually very sensible people, something that was good for someone like Izanami who frankly wasn't always in complete control of her emotions. "Just... we'll wait till they get home, then spring it on them. Maybe you're just overreacting for nothing? Let's calm down, sit down and have some pizza... Okay Izzy?"
While still having what felt like something in her throat, the girl softly nodded as began to eat with her brother.

Even as the two siblings ate, the air of tension and gloom did not completely disperse. This was mostly Izanami's fault, she eating uncharacteristically slower than normal. Needless to say, her brother had no problem catching this. As he finished his third slice, he glanced towards the girl; a solemn look on his face. "Ya gonna be alright sis?"
Frankly, Izanami just was not sure. She was something of a drama queen when things got out of hand, and she very well knew it. Unfortunately, she was not very good at controlling her emotions; even when she wanted to. "I don't know... I just don't like things being out of MY control like this." She would gloomily say, taking another bite out of a slice.
Izanagi seemed to lounge in his wheelchair slightly. As much of a prankster he could be at times, he was still a big brother; and big brothers always had to take care of their siblings after all. "We'll get through it. It's probably not gonna be as bad as you think. Tell you what, we'll tell them about it when they get home and..." He would begin to talk, though he would be promptly interrupted by a loud sound in the hallways; causing him to pause in confusion. "D-did you hear that Nami?"
That noise certainly was not ignored by the gloomy girl, she perking up hearing it. It sounded like something was rustling around her room. Did a burgular come to rob their house?! But that was nearly impossible... their neighborhood was so populated and watched that any moron who would try such a thing would be caught in an instant. She hoped to god that it wasn't, but just to be safe; the girl was quick to get up and head to the living room just by their kitchen. Grabbing a fireplace shovel as a makeshift weapon, she locked eyes with her brother. "Stay here for a second... I'll check."
Rushing to her room, she noticed that it had been left open, it dark inside. Flipping the light switch oddly enough didn't seem to work. Odd since the rest of the house looked like it had power, what gives anyway? As she was thinking to herself, she saw something dart from her closet to underneath her bed.
She couldn't see quite where she was going or what she has saw, but it was certainly an animal of some kind. She didn't KNOW how it got here, but here it was... Whatever it was though, it was small. A cat perhaps? Her mother was allergic to cats, so that would be bad to have around here. Unfortunately, it needed to go.
Pulling off a blanket from her bed and grabbing a flashlight from her computer desk with her desktop monitor on it; the girl bended down and flashed the light into the abyss of her bed, hoping to scare it out of it's hiding place.

Flashing the light caused the creature to get startled, it immediately attempting to bolt out of the bed out to bedroom exit. Unfortunately for it, Izanami had a very fast reaction time; diving into it with the blanket and pinning it to the ground. Quickly, she balled up the creature with the rest of her blanket; rushing back out of her room.
Seeing her sister carrying what looked like a rustling wad of blanket was enough to earn her an odd look from her brother, unsure as to what was going on. "What the fuck is that thing?"
"Don't look at me, I don't know!" The girl would angrily yell as she struggled to keep the creature balled up, trying to make sure she didn't hurt it or let it escape. Thinking fast, she quickly began looking around trying to figure out a place to hurl the creature into. "Hold up! The garage!" She'd quickly exclaim, rushing into their home's garage from the living room.
With one hand, the girl managed to pull something from the heap of junk scatteredIt was an animal cage that was originally for one of their dogs... at least before he passed away. Since then it's been unused, but it should do well towards keeping this... thing locked up. Quickly dragging it out with one arm and shoving the strange creature in, she was quick to lock it so that it did not escape once more.
Only now was she able to get a good look at it, and needless to say it was not like any animal she's ever seen. Its body was small and pudgy, it almost looking like a deformed marshmallow covered in gray fur. More importantly was that its face was a brilliant red gemstone, what looked a grumpy smiley face inside of it.
With the creature detained and unable to escape, Izanami took a deep breath as she sat down; lounging by the cage as her brother wheeled in. While his sister was too exhausted to even really question what the creature, his brother was visibly confused as to just what it was. "What even IS it? That's not an animal... it's like a walking toy if anything."
That comment seemed to cause the creature to scowl, to the sibling's surprise actually speaking clearly to them! "I am no toy you humans! You've had your fun with me, so let me out and leave me alone!" The gem-faced creature would yell, bashing it's hard face on the bars of the cage it was stuck in; attempting to look somewhat threatening.
Unfortunately for it, all this only led to Izanagi staring at it in almost deadpan confusion. "Aaaand it talks too?"
Izanami however was less surprised, more tired of this creature's deal. Her anger was starting to build up in the back of her throat, leaving her so irritated that she didn't even bother questioning how this thing was talking. She wanted answers, and she damned well was going to make this thing give them to her. "Yeeeah, fuck that idea. I want to know what the HELL you are before I even THINK about letting you free." She'd irritably tell the creature with a cold glare, causing it to back off slightly from the girl's intimidating stare.

Despite the small creature's size, it still managed to carry a degree of resistance to Izanami's forceful interrogation of it; it not at all amused by it's position right now. "What do you think you are going to achieve by interrogating me like this?" The blob-like creature would speak, pacing back and forth in the cage impatiently.
"Plenty, cause for one damned reason; you AREN'T normal." The pony-tailed girl would aggressively remark, gripping part of the cage. She was honestly at this point not even bothering wondering what this thing was... she just wanted answers. If she had to bully it into doing so, she would. It was obvious this thing wasn't some animal, it almost like some kind of character that would follow a protgonist in a magical girl anime. "Seriously, what ARE you. Where did you even come from?"
The creature shot her a stink eye, turning away from her so as to avoid direct eyecontact. "I know not how you humans found me in the first place, but I've been stranded in your world for years! And used for what? A mantle piece decoration! Absolutely shameless!"
That last comment cause Izanagi to raise an eyebrow, a look of bewilderment on his face. "Wait... are you telling me you are that you are the gemstone we got a couple years ago? That was you?" He'd ask the creature, amazed by this revelation. So that explains why the stone was gone... how did he not notice it? It literally grew legs and walked off! He was amazed that his little joke from earlier was actually not far from the truth.
Despite the young man's question, the creature refused to turn around; as if attempting to ignore him. Needless to say, Izanami did not take this creature's attitude well. What gives anyway? It was like a spoiled, snobby rich kid... the kinda person that she had absolutely no problem punching. "Hey, he's talking to you little piece of shit. If you don't start giving us answers, I'm going to break that stupid face of yours into little pretty pieces." She'd threaten the creature, just barely holding back her rage towards it.
The threat alone was enough to cause the creature to briefly pause, as if suddenly fearing for it's life. While it was by all means quite rude, it certainly had a measure of fear for it's life and took the threat completely seriously. It obviously did not want to be here right now, though as to how willing it was to share the information it knew; it was being stubborn. "Wh-why does it matter to you humans? You humans should have just remained clueless instead of digging your nose into things that do not concern you." It would speak in a nervous tone, at this point being heavily pressured. It began to back itself into one of the corners of the cage, like a scared animal. "The only human that matters to me is my future partner. Until I see proof that either of you are that person, I don't wish to speak to you..."
For the moment in minutes, Izanami actually started to just slightly calm down. The creature was terrified of it's situation right now, and only then did Izanami realize that she wasn't really helping it in that regard. All she wanted was just to know WHAT was going on here... Was this thing really that gemstone they had all these years? Taking a deep breath, the girl began to speak once more; though more softly and calmly. "Can you tell us at least what you are?"
The creature for a moment remained silent, as if in deep contemplation. Eventually though, it seemed to slightly perk up. "... I am a Digimon. I do not belong here in this world... Please let me out."

Neither Murukami frankly had a good understanding of just what this "Digimon" was saying. The previous talk about it finding a partner of some kind was odd, but there was no doubt that this thing was not natural. It even outright confirmed that it didn't belong here. Was it an alien? Or something from another dimension? Nonetheless, these revelations only further intensified the situation they were being put through.
The two humans backed away from the cage, heading into the living room to get a little privacy. Izanagi was the one to be first to speak up, obviously concerned about what they were going to do with the creature. "Yo, Nami... What do we do with this thing? I... I don't think we should just like let it free. What if it's actually some kind of dangerous monster or something?"
Izanami herself while was trying to be the authoritative figure here, she was honestly terrified as she didn't have a clear understanding of what they were suppose to do. What if her brother was right and this thing was actually very dangerous? But what if it wasn't? They couldn't just keep this thing here forever... Their parents would eventually find out if they tried to keep it hidden, and there was no telling what would happen if they just let it go. Would it even be able to take care of itself if they did it let it go? Lives could be at risk here... "It's terrified right now... but, you're right. We can't just let this thing free just yet. It's not telling us everything it knows yet. Until then, we unfortunately need to keep it here."
The young man nodded, peeking back into the garage; the Digimon laying on the ground of the cage pitifully. "I do feel bad about it, but I think you're right. We need to get more info out of it before we think about doing anything rash." He'd softly whisper to her sister, the moral toll starting to hit the otherwise jolly man. "Do you think we should let mom and dad know? I mean... I doubt they know what to do, but they may be able to help us."
"Nagi, that thing was that gemstone mom got those years ago. I could see mom maybe being able to help, but dad would freak out if he found out. He'd probably try to shoot the damn thing if he got the chance. We don't what's best for it yet and if we can even help it yet." She'd solemnly say, taking a deep breath to try and calm her nerves. It wasn't very effective, but she tried at least. "I don't like it, but we may have to keep this thing a secret for now. We can't let anyone know about this. Not even mom and dad."
With both siblings having come to a mutual agreement of ideals, the two re-entering the garage. Izanami was the one who decided to break the news to the creature, something that while she didn't like; knew it was necessary at the time. "I'm sorry, we can't let you out right now. Until you can tell us everything you know, we can't risk freeing you just yet."
The Digimon seemed to sigh at the girl's response, not liking it but otherwise accepting it. "You humans are merciless..." It'd weakly mutter, it seeming that the entirety of this conversation was taking its toll on both its health and sanity. "I will tell you everything eventually. Just please... don't hurt me. I-I need rest."
The girl stared at their captive, at this point emotionally drained to the point that she couldn't stay mad at the creature. They were nowhere near close to the end of this mess, but it was a start. A slow, painful start. "If you keep to that promise, fine. We aren't trying to hurt you... But we can only help you if you let us."
The creature stared at the girl briefly, before nodding and attempting to lay down; as if readying to sleep. "These terms... are acceptable."

With the creature starting to doze off, Izanami realized that was the last of what they were going to get out of it today. Taking a moment to pick up the cage and trying to keep it level, she glanced at her brother. "Nagi, I'm going to take this thing to my room. That's probably the best place we can hide it here since mom and dad have no reason to go there normally."
Izanagi for a moment took his glasses off his face, polishing them with his shirt before placing them back on his face. The situation here was very complicated for the two of them, but there was doubt in his mind that this was probably the best they could do for now. "It's a shame we can't really do much else, but I can't think of much better." He'd comment, suddenly realizing something that was vitally important for them. "Don't forget we have to go visit grandpa tomorrow... After that, we can try and squeeze some more information out of it."
Izanami nodded at her brother, though frankly she was right now beyond stressed. She actually had forgot about the trip to see good ole grandpa Ameno. Ugh... she hoped all this mayhem that just happened won't spoil the trip. Their grandpa was a sweet old man, she couldn't let this situation they were now in impact their visit. She had a splitting headache and was just as tired as the Digimon right now. "Let me get it put away. I... I think I need some rest too frankly." She'd quietly say to her brother before waving goodbye to him, ready to retreat to her bedroom. "Night Nagi. Try and act like everything's fine so mom and dad don't suspicious."
The wheelchair-bound man nodded, not intending to ruin their plan so soon. "Oy, night Nami. Please take care."
Hours later, it was the dead of night now; nearly everyone asleep at the Murukami household... Izanami unfortunately being the only one incapable of such a process.
She had been sitting in bed, annoyed out of her mind by her inability to sleep. Even taking some sleep medication wasn't helping much, and she didn't even know why. She was trying not to think too heavily about that "Digimon" they found tonight. She stuffed the cage of the now sleeping gem-like creature underneath her bed, a pretty good hiding spot for now considering her parents rarely if ever invaded her room.
Still... she wasn't even sure what to even feel right now. Should she be worried that potentially this creature's fate rests in she and her brother's hands right now? Or she just give up and let it free, then try to forget about it? God... it felt like no matter what she was doing, she was writing herself into a corner at the moment.
As the girl laid in her bed, motionless but wide awake; she was startled by a light briefly flickering in her room. The girl sat up, a look of astonishment on her face. Taking the flashlight she used earlier from her nightstand (the power in her room was still acting finicky for some reason, and she had no idea why,) she got up and pointed it where the light had been flashing a second ago.
On her computer desk, she noticed something that was very much not something of hers. It looked like a small LED toy, not unlike those Tamagotchis she used to have as a kid. Getting up, she scrambled to pick it up; noticing the screen faintly flickering. Written just above it in blue letters was "Digital Link Service"... and despite for a moment trying to fiddle with the buttons on it, she was unable to get it to do anything.
At this point, the girl was not even sure what to make of things now. She certainly had never seen of something like this around the house, nor advertised on television. Did... did her mom sneak this in when she wasn't looking? Or was something much weirder going on here?
Izanami shook her head and pocketed the strange device. She had no time to worry about this shit... she needed some sleep. Even just an hour or two would suffice.
She had more important matters to worry about than attending to a gem-faced alien and a mysteriously-appearing toy at the moment.
