It was evening, the sun had long time since left for the day. Cat sat on her bed and wrote in her diary. “I hate this place so much!” she thought for herself. “I hate myself” she continued thinking, as a tear hit the paper right on her sentence. “I HATE MY DAD!” she screamed without realizing that she wasn’t just thinking. She slammed her face on the paper smudging out the wet ink as it got mixed up with the tear. Unfortunately, her dad heard her outcry: “Wah didcha you just say!” he yelled angrily, clearly drunk.
Loud footsteps were heard downstairs. Cat sighed: “Here we go again” she whispered to herself. Cat quickly closed her diary. Without making a single noise, Cat ran under the bed. From the underside of the bed, Cat was completely hidden from sight. “Yu spail brat ha no respect for ya famly” rambled her dad, as he climbed the stairs loudly stomping at every step. Cat’s father ripped the door to her bedroom open with all his strength. With a bottle in his hand, Cat’s father entered her room filled with rage. As her father looked around, he slowly calmed down to just irritated. “she ran out aga’hn!” her father mustered before going back downstairs again slamming the door along the way.
SLAM! Then footsteps as he walked down the stairs.
Once Cat was certain that her father was gone, she crawled out from the bed. “Going out at the night? Not a bad idea” she said to her window. She tiptoed down the stairs and into the hallway, from there she leaned up the doorway to what used to be a living room. She peeked out for a second and saw her dad had passed out their sole armchair, apparently from over-drinking. Cat walked outside the door and into the housing district.

Cat wandered around the broken dump that she sparsely calls ‘home’. She kept close to the buildings on the way and looked around every 2nd minute. Cat felt her town was getting worse and worse every day. She eventually came to entrance to the back streets an ally that if you turn right will take you right there, an important check points for the trained eye. She stopped up at the corner of the last building and listened: If someone screamed, she should hide if someone didn’t scream, maybe it was safe to move along. She turned her head around, skimming the surroundings. 2 trashcans right inside the ally, two boxes on the other edge of the street, 1 rat looking around the boxes, dim light and no witnesses. She observed the rat and noticed that it kept away from a doorstep right on the edge. There Cat saw 2 shadows. This meant that right now an ambush will take place. She waited in the doorstep on her side of the alley, strutting her chest and made a sultry but unappealing smile to everyone. Cat was completely ignored by people who passed by, she kept doing this for a good hour until a young man decided to enter the alley. She waited patiently in her doorstep for the man to scream which he did 5 minutes later. Then Cat ran as fast and swift as she could, passing by without anyone noticing her presence. Cat did not bother to look at the ambush, she had seen that too many times already: one bulky guy holds the victim down while another bulky guy takes his wallet and beat him up, nothing new. Or so she thought, as she came to the other side of the alley, something strange was sitting on the bench next to the doorstep. It was an egg from a bird she had never seen before that’s for sure, Cat couldn’t explain why, but she felt compelled to take the egg home and hatch it. Cat looked over the alley, per the shadows, the young man was held down and kicked, which means just enough time if she was fast. Cat took the egg under her arm and sprinted back to the doorstep on the other side. She carried the egg in her arms close to her chest all the way home. Cat carefully walked into her apartment placed the egg under her blanket and tugged the egg along with herself. She then went to bed, determined to find out more about the egg once she wakes up.

A small beam of light entered Cat’s broken window, this could only mean one thing; it was morning. Cat opened her eyes and saw that the egg was gone. For a minute, Cat was confused but then she noticed a large round inexplicable budge by the bedside. Cat sat up in her bed, her arms hugging her legs “Huh, what is going on?” Cat said. “Good morning!” the budge squeed. A startled Cat pulled the blanket away revealing a white fluffy ball with round ears smiling back at her. Cat forced a friendly smile not sure what would happen. The ball jumped over and sat on her pillow. Still full of joy, the ball looked at Cat expectantly who had curled into a ball protecting her body. Cat looked up again briefly. “What… Umm oh, who are you?” Cat strutted nervously. “I’m Nyao, your new partner!” the ball said excitedly. In a brief reminisce of common manners, Cat keeled to Nyao with her hands folded. “My name is Ise Katsura! Did you… Say partner?” Cat said with a friendly smile, although her voice was so discorded it was obvious that she was afraid. Nyao nodded anyway, ignoring Cats blatant attempt to look calm. Nyao started speaking again: “I did, I’m a digimon, a digital monster who hatched…”“Monster!” Cat screamed in panic as she curled back into a ball. Not hearing Nyao out. Nyao giggled patiently and grinded up at Cat affectionately, assuring Cat that she shouldn’t be afraid. It took almost an hour for Cat to calm down, by then she was just looking at Nyao attentive. Nyao tried again: “As I was saying, I was hatched this night. Thank you for taking so good care of me” “Oh, You’re…umm…welcome?” Cat said in a low pitch, she had stopped using her fake smile. Now curious, Cat carefully poked Nyao expecting her to bite. “Eek!” As Cat touched Nyao a light in her hand appeared, Cat frightfully retracted her hand. The glow remained eventually taking the shape of a bal. A moment later the glow ceased and out came a strange device that was now resting in her hand. “A phone?” Cat asked. “Not just a phone partner, it will tell you anything you’ll like to know about digimon” Cat studied the strange machine, she pushes a bottom and it showed a picture of Nyao then it spoke:
YukimiBotamon Baby Digimon, white subspecies of Botamon. Its body is covered in white hair. Likes its cold. Can freeze the moisture in the air with its breath
“This is all too weird” Cat thought. “So how do you feel?” Nyao said calmly. Cat forced a friendly smile. “Great!” Cat answered mimicking Nyao’s excitement. However, now Nyao’s smile faded and she gave Cat a judging look that made her nervous. “How do you feel?” Nyao asked again, this time in a serious tone, Cat stuttered: “I’m… Ummm…. Fine. Stop staring at me” Her smile was starting to crack, her left eye twitched and she starting cutting her teeth. This time, Nyao didn’t answer she just kept staring. For almost half an hour, a staring match between Nyao and Cat ensued. No one said anything, finally… Cat’s smile disappeared and returned to her default face. One last time, Nyao asked, this time in a calm tone: “How do you feel?” Cat sighed in defeat. “I think you got me mistaken, I can’t be your partner. I’m sorry, I’m worthless and whatever that digimon thing is, I will pull you down”Nyao returned to being cheerful, “You have great potential, you were very kind and took care of me even when you could just walk away”. Before Cat could say anything back Nyao jumped up in her lap. Cat sighed again, whether she wanted to or not, this creature won’t let her off the hook. “You’re annoying, you know that?” Cat muttered as she petted Nyao’s back like a pet. Nyao just purred affectionately. “You win” Cat said meekly.

Cat took another look at the Digivice, she noticed the buildt in clock and realized it was 10:04am. Cat gasped in panic. “I’m late! Dad is going to kill me!” Cat said as she hurried up with getting ready. “It’s not that bad si-…” Nyao began, she was about to giggle when she noticed Cat’s tense expression. Cat had already given up trying to hide her feelings for Nyao, what is the point when Cat can read right through?
Now that Cat’s facade was shattered, Nyao could see her as what she truly is: A scared little girl with absolutely no self-esteem and little to no backbone to back up her so-called calmness who is currently hidden in a corner of her own bedroom with her face against the wall hyperventilating. She was talking in gibberish that Nyao didn’t even try to comprehend. Nyao jumped down and walked to Cat with a pitiful frown. “Am I wrong?” Nyao said worried as she snugged into Cat to provide support. Rather than answering, Cat took her blouse off again, her body was full with various of bruises and scars several fainted but also some red marks. Cat indicated a stretch mark on her left arm.
“My 10-year-old birthday, the best day in my life” Cat scuffed, but the insult lost all power the very second later when she fell a tear. Cat stroked Nyao which seemed to help her calm down. “Isn’t he your dad?” Nyao said disillusioned. “So?” Cat said in a dry tone, Nyao didn’t knew what to say to this snarky remark; “Umm” was the only answer Nyao could come up with. “I need to cook him breakfast now if he doesn’t get any in 30 minutes, I’m in trouble” Cat said. “Can I come?” Nyao said smiling “I… uh, not if sure my dad can take this?” Cat began only to see Nyao given her the judging stare again. Cat sighed, she knew when she was beaten, she sent Nyao a coy smile. “Fine, you can be my toy then. Just pretend you can’t talk or move” Cat said. “YAY!” Nyao said full of joy and jumped into Cat’s arms, they shared a hug. “You’re so annoying!” Cat said giggling.
By that second Nyao started to glow, after everything that had happen this morning Cat just rolled with it and pretended like this was not the weirdest day of her life. When the light fainted, Nyao was yellow with catlike ears and had grown a long tail. “What did just happen?” Cat said confused. “I digivolved! When a digimon get enough experience and age, they change to a stronger form. We also change based on the emotions between our partner” Nyao said. “Oh, like puberty?” Cat asked curious “Umm I guess? Anyway that ‘phone’ you got isn’t just a phone” Nyao began. “Oh, what a surprise!” Cat mumbled with sarcastic over-dramatic surprise. Nyao cleared her throat, ignoring Cat’s comments. “Its name is a Digivice, it can channel the emotional energy within you, who knows, with enough love maybe you’ll get to see an even cuter form” Cat stared into Nyao’s big brown eyes, they were just too adorable to resist. Instantly she gave Nyao another hug, much to her dismay it didn’t change Nyao’s form again. Cat pouted in disappointment. “Well, at least you don’t cry anymore!” Nyao said giggling. Cat shrugged and pretended to be complete serious, she returned to her default face. “So, as I was saying, we’re going to make breakfast. Sigh, you can be my toy” And so Cat put on her blouse and carried Nyao downstairs in her arms.

As Cat and Nyao entered the living-room on the way to the kitchen, much to Cat's dismay her father was already awake. There he sat in his armchair with crossed arms and a chilling glare. Cat obediently walked to her father without any emotion in her face, it was like Cat was a machine. Somehow, Cat's cold attitude only made her father aggregated. Still without any sass, her father couldn't just lash out in the rant he clearly wanted. Not that he won't try either way. He stands up towering over his daughter to look intimating "Cat you spoiled brat, do you have any idea what time it is?" He said coldly, Cat didn't move a muscle "10:15, noon daddy" Cat said mechanically "Don't talk back kid, it's bad enough that you defy my authority by running out. When I woke up, there was no breakfast, no morning greeting and..." He noticed Nyao in her arms "You have become a baby apparently, where did you get that trash anyway?" "I found her abandoned at a doorstep, daddy" Cat said. Cat's father chuckled. "A baby and a thief! HAHA, you get worse every day. I will probably never find a wife as long as I'm stuck with you!" "I am sorry daddy" Cat bowed "Tell you what Cat, just for making me laugh I give you one more chance. Go make breakfast now. "Yes daddy" Cat said as she carried Nyao to the kitchen

As Cat entered the kitchen, she sat Nyao on the kitchen desk. Nyao looked down on Cat pitifully. "What?" Cat said detached Why do you put up with him? Nyao was definitely worried Cat went for the fridge and took out eggs, she then proceed to fry 6 eggs. "He is my dad" Cat finally said. "No parent would treat their child like that." Nyao had once again that judgemental look, Cat wasn't sure whether she judged her father or her. Cat got nervous either way. She flipped the eggs and separated them in 3 potions before placing bacon on the pan. "I probably deserved it anyway" Cat muttered, she didn't have the courage to look Nyao into her eyes. That answer seemed to anger Nyao. "Nobody deserves this, look at me!" Cat commanded, reluctantly Cat obligated. "You're sweet, you're kind and resourceful. The only thing wrong with you is that you can't see it." At first Cat was going to say something but that look Nyao had destroyed all resistance. She turned the bacon. "I want to leave, but I have nowhere to go." That seemed to be the magic words as Nyao lighted up, with a determined smile Nyao responded: "That's where you're wrong, you can come with me" "Where?" "To the digital world that's where I come from" Running away was indeed something Cat had dreamed off and after everything happening today, Cat was willing to believe in more and less anything. Needless to say, Cat was tempted by the thought of leaving everything behind. "Maybe, let me think about it a moment" Nyao nodded in approval After toasting a bread and finishing the bacon, there were now 3 plates of delicious breakfast. Much to Nyao's confusion as they were only 2 people.

Out of curiousness, Nyao studied the 3 plates. "Who is the third one, is that for me?" Nyao smiled although Cat returned to her default look. "You will see." Cat said as she hid one plate away. This made Nyao confused. Cat added cutlery and like a professional waitress, she stacked both plates on her left arm and took Nyao under her right hand. In an impressive show of balance, Cat carried the plates and Nyao to the living-room. In the living room she made a squat, placing Nyao safely on the floor and handed her father his plate. "Thanks kitten, nice to know you're only half a disappointment" "Thank you daddy" Cat said without emotion. While her father promptly and greedily began eating his food, Cat just stood there and staring coldly on him. By the time he was finished, he placed the empty plate on the armrest. "Give me your plate too" Cat's father commanded "Huh?" Whispered Nyao to herself as she glanced on Cat's father in disbelief. "I'm hungry, daddy" Cat said nonchalantly. Cat's dad smirked; "Serves you right" he took the plate out of Cat's hand not that it was any challenge anyway as Cat offered no resistance. When he was done eating, Cat collected the plates and took Nyao in her right arm. Once back in the kitchen, Cat placed Nyao back on the desk. She took out the third plate, answering Nyao's chocked expression. "Dad thinks he owns me, but I figured him out years ago" Cat altered between eating and doing the dishes. "Well, you got the brains. I give you that" Nyao couldn't come up with anything else to say about that turn of events. Cat took the toast and offered it to Nyao. "Hungry?" "Umm, yeah but don't you need something too?" Nyao said concerned, "I manage." when Cat persistently almost forcefully showed the bread near Nyao mouth. Nyao eventually gave in and ate it, however when Cat tried to feed her the whole plate Nyao just stared at her. Finally, Cat started eating for real.

After finishing eating, Cat picked up her metal plate from the cupboard and placed it in her backpack among her possessions. "I'm going out to do my part for today" Cat said. "I thought cooking was your thing?"
Cat sighed, "No Nyao-chan, not even close. To make up for dad's... Well, just being himself. I have to do work too." "But... You're a child what can you do, and why do you need a plate?" She saw the look Cat sent her "Oh... can I go with you then?"
Cat paused for a moment to think, then she shrugged. "Well you can't stay here, alone with dad that's for sure"
Not wanting to risk Cat would change her mind, Nyao jumped into her arms to be carried around. "By the way, why do your dad call you a cat?" "It's an old joke back from high school sigh, I hated it but dad thought it was hilarious." Cat answered "That's mean! Can I call you Katsura?"
Cat was flustered at that proposal she widened her eyes, not sure how to react. Faking a smile was out of the question, what was the point when Nyao could see right through her. Finally she pulled herself together. "But, that's my first name! Not even dad uses that anymore."
Nyao smiled and cuddled into Cat. "Someone has to! Besides I like you." "Sigh, you really know how to be annoying. Let's go before dad gets funny ideas" Cat mumbled as they both left her apartment.

It was afternoon and Cat was still cold, from the hallway you could hear a man struggling with getting past the snow. "Dad?" Cat said surprised as the door got opened. "Where are you going Katsura?" Cat hugged Nyao before going home to greet her father. There he stood, all covered in snow. Cat curtsied unto her dad, "Welcome home, daddy." Cat put up her fake smile so her dad won't get mad at her for not showing enthusiasm. Cat's father didn't respond but just hanged her his coat which she hang up. Her father walked unto the fridge and took up the bento with the rice-balls made for him. As he closed the door to the fridge, the note fell off. Cat stared at the note until it landed at the floor, then as her dad walked to his armchair she picked it up and placed it in her pocket. Not bothering to waste her fake smile again, Cat went out to her dad as he had already ate the last rice ball. "How was your day, daddy?"
While chewing on the last riceball, Cat's dad looked at her for a second before answering. "Boring" Then he passed her the empty bento, which she promty started washing up. Chronology: Part one: See above Part 2Part 3Part 4 is starting now

Nyao was concerned, (where did she go? Why isn't she coming back?") Nyao thought. Determined to find out Nyao started to jump down the stairs not realizing that Cat's dad had returned. "Katsura, what is going on, is everything alright?"
Then, Nyao paused as she saw Cat's dad, since neither knew what to say they just started staring each other down. Both wanted to say something, Nyao had a lot of words about Cat's dad one or two might even be polite. It was her dad that decided to break the ice, by yelling so load that the rice ball fell out of his mouth onto the floor. "Cat! Get back here!" Frighten Cat ran back to her dad, (I knew I should have cleaned up) then Cat saw Nyao and instantly understood what had upset her dad this time. "Cat! That is not a toy! What is this thing and what is it doing in my house?!"
Cat picked up Nyao before responding, "This is Nyao, she is my friend"
Cat's father face turned red, "Your friend?! 1. You don't have any friends. 2. I don't want you to have any pets and 3. I want that pest exterminated!"
Cat hugged Nyao close into herself, "N-n-no dad" Cat ran upstairs when her dad followed her up, she placed Nyao behind her and blocked the stairs with herself. "What did you say?"Cat was getting more assertive as much as she feared her dad, she would not let him get away with hurting her only friend. She placed her hands on the railing adament to prevent him from going up. "I can't let you do this. I won't!" "Katsura?"
The bottled up emotions in Katsura seemed to resonate something inside the digi-device. A beam shooted out and hit Nyao. A moment later Nyao had digivolved into a Salamon.
Her father full of rage took off her belt not noting that his pants was falling down to his knees as result. "You spoiled brat, this time you have outdone yourself in disappointing me."
As her dad took off her belt a strange impulse filled Cat, she made a look that she had never done before. "I said no" Cat said so cold that her dad actually hesitated for a minute. As he came to last step before Cat she couldn't resist the urge anymore. Without thinking, Cat pushed her dad on the chest as hard as she could. "What are doing? Stop this!" Her dad no longer angry but actually scared screamed, the combination of loose pants and Cat's pushing had made him lose balance. Then, Katsura's dad fell down the stairs in a loud scream. Then as he hit the floor, he went silent. This emotional tension combined with seeing Katsura in this light had a strange effect of Nyao's collar somehow this event caused a crack to appear along the ring. The collar stayed on but it might as well had felled down the stairs instead of Cat's father judging by the look of it. For a large moment, they both just stared at her lifeless dad, then Cat realized what she had done. She went down on her knees looking down the stairs. "Daddy? I... I didn't *whimper*.... I didn't mean to... I'm.... I'm sorry.... daddy. Please... Wake up" Cat broke down in tears as she slowly understood what just happened. Nyao snuggled into Cat trying to calm her down. "I understand, thank you for protecting me"
Then Cat started to panic, any minute someone could find her dad. "We gotta go out, if... If they find me they will put me in a mental asylum and wipe my memory!"
Nyao looked confused at Cat. "Katsura, what are you talking about?
Slightly more calm Cat turned to Nyao "I have no idea, anyway we need to get out right now. But where to?" "How about the digital world?" "Yeah, I guess that would do. How do we get there?"
As to answer the question, the digi-device started glowing whenever Cat hold it in a specific direction. "The digi-device knows the way." "Okay, let's skedaddle".
Cat packed all her belongings and with Nyao in her arms, she ran out of her apartment.
End of Katsura's prologue arc
