Ashers to Ashers, Dust to Dust (Gee I wonder who this is)

"Mysterious what?" Elliot asked, eyes widening in surprise as he listened to what Asher had to say. "Just what the heck were you two getting up to in there? I swear, I leave you alone for one second . . ." He tried to sound like he was chiding the two, but the fact was that Elliot was way too relieved at their continued survival to be annoyed.
That said, Asher's question deserved some explanation. "Did you really think I was gonna let Isaac go it alone?" he asked, smiling a bit proudly. "Like, when he didn't come back in the next hour I went off looking for him. He's way too important to me to risk vanishing like that. It was pretty easy to trace it to this monolith, since there were such huge signals of spirit energy coming from it. And then when it didn't open up, I kinda sorta turned into Gargoylemon and started punching my way through the walls. Took a lot of pounding to get their attention, but once they opened the door it became way easier.
That's started the whole blind rage thing off, though, so I don't think I'm ever going to do that again." Elliot paused, before once again hugging Asher tightly. "I'm so sorry . . ."
Elliot didn't have any complaints about walking. His flying form was horrifying, and truth be told he was pooped from all the Digivolving lately. Isaac, on the other hand, was much more willful. Upon finding out that Asher was carrying him away bridal style, he sleepily started trying to wiggle out of the grip. "Damnit, Asher, I can walk myself . . . " he muttered, the tone of his voice spoiling that he was clearly half asleep.
This was gonna be a long walk.

"Hey, I wasn't gonna go swimming in it!" Asher laughed, with a shake of his head. Weird liquids didn't seem like great pools! But, at least the teen seemed to find it entertaining in some way! Smile lingered, as the teen listened to the much younger boy's 'scolding.' "I swear, it wasn't that bad!" Except parts of it kind of was. "I mean, you came in at the worst of it all." Before then, everything seemed way easier!
Listening to Elliot's explanation of his side of the events, Asher tried to imagine the persistence required in all of this. "Props for being stubborn," he hummed, trying to find a positive to all of the situation. "But, hey, at least you recognize your own brother." This time, the teen attempted to not stiffen at Elliot's hug, as if remembering that he'd been ignoring Elliot for the past several days. Asher really deserved getting beaten up, didn't he? "Don't feel bad about it. You didn't even know who I was." Though, would that have actually made a difference?
Feeling Isaac shifting about, the spirit user adjusted his grip and pulled the groggy boy closer. "N-ope!" Asher chimed, barely glancing down at his coworker. He sounded asleep! Were these brothers seriously that stubborn? "You're stuck with me," he teased, in a sing-song tone, before sticking his tongue out. Surely, Isaac wasn't going to respond, but it didn't matter!
And, since the conversational partners were limited, eyes returned to Elliot. Don't let any awkward silences happen! It would let the guilt sink in too much! "You're so lucky that you didn't spend much time in that place. I swear, it was inspired by those fake alien abduction movies, with humans being test subjects." Just keep talking!

"Wasn't that ba- you guys were kidnapped!" Elliot said, voice full of worry once again. "They didn't do anything to brainwash you, did they? Because I don't want you dragging my bro back to that monolith. Look at him! He can barely move!" Isaac seemed to respond by limply thrashing in Asher's arms, as if trying to protest Elliot's statement and failing hilariously. "But I'm glad it wasn't too terrible. I swear, I was really worried . . ." Sure, everyone but Asher came out of it looking terrible, and Asher was the worst when it came to giving honest self-assessments, but someone as trusting as Elliot wasn't going to capitalize on that.
If Asher was trying to cheer Elliot up with his statement, he was failing. In fact, Elliot was currently trying his hardest to hide the frown Asher had put on his face. "I should've known who you were!" he blurted, his worry now boiling over into frustration. "You're my friend. And you're really important to me. And I was gonna really hurt you just because of that stupid form. I know, you were in a form I'd never seen before, but I still should've at least heard you, right?" Just as quickly as it flared up it subsided, leaving Elliot slowly fallowing after Isaac and Asher. "I'm really proud of you, by the way," he added, trying to force his frown into a weak smile.
Something about the sing-song way Asher responded to Isaac left his blood boiling. He tried his hardest to turn his head up and glare at Asher, but being so tired the most he could do was glower. Upon Asher pulling him in closer he simply continued to writhe and wiggle, as if hoping to just phase through Asher's arms and hit the ground. "I'm telling you, I'm fine. You don't need to hold me like that," he grumbled, incredibly embarrassed at how easily Asher was able to carry him around. Was Elliot shooting him the occasional jealous glance? Nah, that was probably just his tired imagination.
"He's right though. If it wasn't for how painful that place was, it would've been super lame."

Flashing a grin, the teen tilted his head. "He's moving plenty!" Too much, even! Though Asher wasn't going to admit to that! "If I was brainwashed, wouldn't I have stopped us from leaving the monolith to begin with?" That felt like a valid enough point! Frankly, even if he was brainwashed, Asher was simply too tired to consider the concept of returning to that place! It did make the spirit user think for a moment. "I mean, the weird brain-squid was talking to me, in my head, or something," he mumbled, lowly. While that should have remained in his thoughts, it slipped out from a combination of exhaust and plain old carelessness! Oops. That was going to make him look suspicious, wasn't it? "But, uh, I don't think it actually did anything."
This time, though, Asher thought before speaking. Or, actually, chose not to speak at all. There really was no comforting Elliot on the subject, was there? Despite a low hum and head shake, he refused to argue the subject. There was no way Elliot would shake the blame, was there? The next part had thrown him off, though. Slowing, the redhead shifted to shoot a confused look at the boy. "Proud of what?" He certainly hadn't done anything!
It seemed with each wiggle, the spirit user intended to pull Isaac a little closer to his chest. "Rather I just drop you on the ground?" He taunted, trying to shift Isaac a little to prevent him from being held too tightly. "I could've just thrown you over my shoulder and carried you home like that. Suck it up, I can always find a way to make this worse." Considering the cheerful lacing to his tone, Isaac might want to reconsider!
After all, it was better than being smothered by Kinkakumon, wasn't it?
"Y'know, if you hadn't told them your name was Piss Off, I really think the entire thing would have gone easier for you."

"You know, that's true," Elliot said, pondering Asher's statement. "I mean, unless you were trying to lure us into a false sense of security. Or knock us out when we're in human form so we can't resist. Or maybe you're a sleeper agent and you won't realize until I say some kind of code phrase by accident, like 'Rutabega!' You know, that kind of thing." Elliot was overthinking this a little, or a lot. However, at the very least this seemed to be giving him a bit of levity. The more improbable of a situation he tried to cook up, the more a smile started to worm its way onto his face.
It was back in full force by the time Asher asked about Elliot's pride statement. "Proud of you!" he repeated, as if surprised Asher didn't get it. "You got, like, two new forms in such a short amount of time. And you're already using them like a natural. I remember you were scared of breaking me if I got too close as Kinkakumon, and now you have total control over her. You didn't bruise me while holding onto me or anything!" He rolled up his sleeves as if to confirm; completely unbruised. "It took me, like, forever to get my next forms. You should really be proud of yourself!"
Isaac grumbled at Asher's cheerful tone. As much as he hated to admit it, Asher could easily sling him over his shoulder like a piece of meat. "Fine, fine, I'll stop. But could you at least grab a little less tight?" he asked, looking down to avoid eye contact with his insufferable boss. "Was that thing seriously in your head, by the way? I didn't hear a thing."
What he did hear was the name he gave the aliens. Elliot broke into laughter as Isaac flushed furiously. "I was not giving them my name," he insisted, huffing a little as he spoke. "Last thing I'd need was those things knowing stuff about me. You're just lucky you're impossible to get pissed at." Seriously, why did he get treated sweetly and Isaac get beaten? It sucked!

"I'm still pretty sure that would have been easier when we were still stuck in that place," the spirit user pointed out, lightly. But, at the 'code' of Rutabaga, the teen paused, shifting in the sand to take a step back from where they had come from in an almost robotic fashion, "well, I've got Isaac, so I guess it's time to go back to being imprisoned," he hummed, only to return to walking in the proper direction again seconds later. At least Elliot was looking less stressed now! "I don't think I'd be able to get very far, anyway. Guess we'll go home instead." Digivolving just sounded like the perfect way to pass out in the sand!
Asher most certainly didn't understand why anyone was being proud of him! "Me?" He repeated, slowly, trying to think about the subject. "Is it really that weird to have two already?" Then again, Yatagaramon wasn't intentionally found! In fact, it kind of seemed like it was supposed to be a trap! But, who knew? It wasn't like the teen had any idea of the norm when it came to hunting for spirits. He could find one as a 'prize' in a cereal box and think it was a totally average way to collect them!
The young man didn't want to admit that there still really wasn't much in the way of control of Kinkakumon, at least emotion-wise. And, Yatagaramon pretty much just felt like it was letting him do whatever he wanted. Enabling, even? If only Asher could figure out some sort of meditation practice that would let him talk to the spirits! Then, maybe, he'd be able to figure out what went on in their metaphorical heads while he was in control. "I had a great teacher, to help me with the self-control." Yes, let it feel like Elliot had some credit to take here! Even if bashing pans above his face wasn't the most ideal way of practicing it!
"Only as long as you don't squirm too much," the actor teased, loosening his grip, so that Isaac would actually have a little wiggle-room. Though, it seemed that Asher was more than content with the lack of eye-contact, making sure that he was looking straight forward, and not even at the person in his arms. "Yeah. He," the teen paused, trying to recollect the conversation. Then, with an almost exasperated tone change, the actor tried to shift away from any potential of a serious discussion about it, "Talked a lot, actually! I swear, he'd make a perfect villain, just from how long-winded the guy was." Why did cartoon villains always have to talk a ton?
Ah, but at least Isaac's new name was making Elliot laugh. That was all it took for Asher to begin smiling again, shaking his head. "Hey now, you get pissed at me all the time! I was just nice to the first group of aliens that came in! A little nice goes a long way!" Like not getting his body stretched out, or thrown through a bunch of other painful experiments! Then again, it was a wonder that he hadn't gotten hurt at least a little during the beginning of the experiments! "I even threatened one of them, and didn't get treated that bad."

"I mean, it isn't weird or anything," Elliot said, pensive. "Or at least, I don't think it is. But you're certainly finding them way faster than my bro and I did. It took us, like, almost a year to get to where we are now! And Alicia's taking a similar amount of time. So as far as I know, you're gonna be unstoppable soon!" Then again, Elliot and Isaac didn't even know how to find Mega level spirits, so their peak was a peak set in stone for quite a while. As far as they knew, Devidramon and (regrettably) Gargoylemon were the best they could get. Sometimes Isaac went searching, such as today, but he always came up empty handed.
At mentioning Elliot having a huge hand in Asher's self-control, Elliot shook his head furiously. "Nope! I was pretty horrible at it," he admitted, a little bit less than cheerfully. "I tried my best, but I just don't think I've got what it takes. But thanks for trying to cheer me up about it, still." For a boy who seemed so optimistic, it was a staggeringly down to earth self-assessment. Nevertheless, he didn't seem to be letting it get him down, either. As far as Elliot could tell, it was just a fact. "But that's okay. You don't really need me to help with that kind of thing, anyway. I'll just keep on cheering you on," he added, smiling somewhat shyly.
Isaac was a lot less shy, even if his furious wiggling had finally come to an end. "Long winded, huh? Had a feeling," Isaac said. "Guys like that love hearing themselves talk way too much. Makes me wish he coughed up a bit more during the fight. I love tearing arguments like that to shreds." Seriously, why were so many of these villains so self-important? Didn't they have lives? Or hobbies?
Apparently neither did Asher, besides teasing Isaac. "Let's be fair, I've tried getting mad at you," Isaac said through grit teeth. "It never works. You're too darn nice. Always lose it in the next, like, five seconds after I feel bad. It's like trying to be mad at a puppy." Maybe that applied to the aliens as well. And if he threatened one, it was sure to be in that lofty Asher way that left people more confused than hurt, anyway. "Besides, you weren't in there as long as I was. Trust me, after the first few hours it really starts to ramp up.
Suddenly, Isaac froze. As he started talking again, he began eyeing the horizon warily. ". . . So, any of you guys know where we're going?"

A year? That seemed like forever! "That doesn't mean it's going to take, like, nine months for my next spirit to show up, does it?" Asher found himself half-teasing and half-legitimately-asking. Then again, did he really want to get the next spirit? Wasn't that what Elliot had just gone crazy as? On second thought, maybe he didn't mind waiting several years before dealing with that!
It was surprising to hear Elliot being so blunt about how bad of a teacher he was, though! "I at least learned a little from it?" Sure, that little was summed up as 'startling a spirit is a bad idea' but it had to count for something! "I appreciate the help, either way," he admitted, lightly. After all, the kid was just trying to look out for him! That's what mattered, even if Asher really didn't want to admit that he probably shouldn't try to take on anything in the Digital World alone. That's how people get abducted by aliens, clearly.
"Maybe he didn't talk to you because he knew you would just argue with him," the spirit user suggested, teasing more. Then again, Asher hadn't necessarily been agreeing with the guy! So, who knew? Maybe Isaac just seemed less likely to listen to weird voices in his head. Huh. When considered that way, it was kind of insulting!
Lowering his head to hover over Isaac's, the teen flashed a smile, "are you saying I'm a puppy?" Then, with barely a pause, he added a sugar-coated, "aw, does that mean you like me?" That wasn't actually a good thing! But, whatever. This wasn't the time to try to continue the distancing act.
But, now that his attention was brought back to his surroundings, the teen looked around a little. "I have no idea. I don't know anything about the Digital World!" What did anyone expect from him? Asher shouldn't be expected to know where they were, or where they should go! "Is there a problem with this direction?"

"I dunno. Maybe? We've been kinda stalled on our latest ones for a while," Elliot admitted. "Maybe we just haven't found them yet. Or maybe there's something else we have to do. But I think Gargoylemon's the best I've got for the near future." Elliot clearly wasn't happy about that, even as he tried to give Asher a weary smile. Why did that dragon have to be so troublesome? "Oh! Can Isaac and I help you look? If we all put our heads together it should be far easier to find them all, right? And I mean, worst case scenario, we just have a lot of fun exploring together. Like, hopefully better than this one, at least."
The fact that Asher seemed insistent about Elliot's helpfulness helped reassure him a bit. His weary grin stabilized somewhat as Asher brought up his "training." "I'm really glad you got something out of it, at least," Elliot said. "If you ever need a hand, I'll make sure to work on it a little bit harder next time. Thanks for that."
"If he can get inside our minds, probably," Isaac admitted, shrugging. He made sure to keep his shrug movement a little bit subdued to avoid shoulderbutting Asher right in the jaw. "I mean, by that point my train of thought was . . . " Hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate. "Pretty one-track, all things considered."
Then Asher leaned in closer, and Isaac had to resist the urge for a reflexive headbutt. "Hey, don't push your luck," he grumbled, quite uncomfortable with the fact that they were practically one sinkhole away from some accidental kissing. "You're just way too hard to stay frustrated at."
"I like you!" Elliot chirped, far more happy than his perpetually grumbly brother.
"I mean, if this direction's the right direction, there's nothing wrong with it," Isaac said, forcing both their conversation and their trip back on the proper rails. "I mean, you can recognize the direction you came from, right? Or the nearest town? There's gotta be something on the horizon . . ." He squinted and craned his neck, trying to get a sense of their surroundings despite currently being lugged around like a lapdog. "I swear, if after all of this we get lost, I am not gonna be happy."

The thought of Gargoylemon being Elliot's best option for any span of time just didn't feel right. That monster was far too aggressive for someone like Elliot! The kid better suited a kitten, or something. Not a ferocious, winged beast. Was Asher going to get stuck with something that made him see red, too? Isaac seemed to have pretty good control over his beast. But, what if the older of the two brothers had just gotten lucky on that front?
"Ah," the teen breathed, hearing Elliot's request. "I'm not in any hurry to find the next one!" Especially after spending thirty seconds with Gargoylemon! "I'll let you know if I want some help, though, alright?" That sounded like a great 'compromise' to Asher! Though, it wasn't likely that he would ever want to get assistance!
Especially considering Asher didn't have a brother to put him back in his place.
It was a good thing that Isaac was careful about not shrugging into the other spirit user's face, though. That didn't seem like a fun concept! "I feel like one-track minds would be easier to work with?" The redhead started, picking up the teasing more, "I mean, they're more simple!" Careful, Asher! Nobody wants an intentional shoulder to the face!
With a small shake of his head, the teen's bangs fell close enough that they should brush across Isaac's face, before Asher grinned, straightening his posture to avoid any pain that his 'cargo' may be inclined to cause. "I think that means you like me," he hummed, before looking to Elliot. Grin softened, while his head tilted to the side slightly, "I like you, too!" Which was exactly why Asher didn't want to invite Elliot along on potentially dangerous adventures!
"I have no idea if this is the right direction," the spirit user admitted, all-too cheerfully. What did it matter, as long as they weren't dying? "I flew most of the way. Everything looks pretty different from the sky." Shifting Isaac a little in his arms, Asher felt the need to add in another half-joke. "Are you ever happy, anyway?

Did Elliot seem a tiny bit disappointed at Asher's response? Maybe it was just a trick of the light, but it seemed like Elliot was almost hoping for the chance to help his good friend out. Nevertheless, he didn't let the tiny glimmer of disappointment in his eyes stick around for too long. After all, Asher just said he'd call whenever he needed help, right?
Sure, he also said, he'd read Elliot's story ideas. But this time it'd be different, surely.
"Okay!" Elliot said, not letting that brief negative thought get to him. Where the heck did that come from? "I don't really have too much going on these days, so I'll basically always be able to lend a hand if you need. And make sure to stay safe when I'm not there to check in, okay? I mean, I'd feel really bad if something like this happened again, but I wasn't able to find you in time . . ." Oh Elliot, you worry way too much. Then again, it seemed like Asher worried about Elliot a ton too, so maybe it wasn't a problem.
"Psh. I am complicated," Isaac said, a tone of mock outrage in his voice. "Sometimes I thought about slashing him with a bigass claw. Sometimes I thought about blasting him with a bunch of green fire. Sometimes, dare to dream, I thought about slashing him up, then fireblasting him. Pretty complex, eh?" Well, Isaac sure wasn't happy about that little adventure! Then again, considering he dropped the fight as soon as Vademon had gone down, it was clear fighting wasn't the only thing on his mind. After all, some Digimon could be downright murderous if given the chance.
At Asher teasing that Isaac liked him, Isaac gave a light shoulder bash. "You wish," he joked, letting Elliot have his turn in the limelight now. After all, these discussions with Asher could get really circular!
And to think they were so antagonistic to each other earlier. Small world, eh?
"Good point. A bird's-eye view makes things way easier," Isaac pointed out. "Now, if you'd let me get myself airbor-"
"No."
"Killjoy. Anyway, I'm plenty happy!" Isaac protested. "I'm happy when I do good at a goal I set for myself. I'm happy when I spend the day with my awesome girlfriend. I'm happy when I get to be peoples' hero. Lots of reasons to be happy.
What about you?"

At the very least, Asher pretended to not notice the disappointment. Oh no, he was not retracting that statement! It was out of concern, more than anything else! Oh well. There was no need to continue that conversation, anyway. It would just make the spirit user feel bad again! After all, he still felt pretty bad about ignoring Elliot for such a long time.
But, hey now! He'd read most of Elliot's story ideas! Just not the most recent one or two!
Asher nodded, thinking about how today could have gone if the brothers hadn't been present. He'd almost definitely still be trapped in that weird place! "Okay, Mom," he teased, lightly. If Asher's hands were free, he would have ruffled Elliot's hair, but the option really wasn't there unless he wanted to drop Isaac. Tempting thought! But, no. "Usually, Whiskers is with me, but he was busy with something in," what was it called? "Some city. Near the train station." Close enough!
Smirk falling across his lips, the redhead listened to Isaac's 'complex' thought process. "Oh, definitely! Now, I'm sure that he didn't want to talk to you because you were just far too intelligent for him!" Was that a hint of sarcasm? Yet, as violent as the fifteen-year-old sounded, he hadn't been going for the kill at all! That spoke far more than words ever could!
With a small, "tch," at the shoulder, and comment, Asher chose to place his focus on Elliot for the moment. But, the teen tensed subtly, bringing Isaac slightly closer to him. Maybe.
But also no.
Luckily, this was timed with Elliot's response to Isaac, which managed to snap him back to the conversation. What were they talking about? Oh. Right! "I swear, I'm going to know your girlfriend better than anyone else, with how much you mention her," he hummed. Sure, this time it was just a drop of what made him happy, but this girl was brought up all the time! Hopefully, she had some idea of how well-liked she was!
As for him? "Sleep makes me happy," he pointed out, sounding far too happy about the subject. Sleep was the best option! Except for when it wasn't. "Piper," which was an obvious answer. Who would Asher be if his sister didn't make him happy? "When I run, I guess," he hummed, trying to think of more things. Ah, this was too hard! Time to deflect! "What makes you happy, Elliot?"

Elliot smiled at Asher, either proud of the tease or seemingly not minding. "Come on, I know if it was me or Isaac in trouble you'd be just as worried," he said. He would've given Asher a gentle punch to the arm with that sentence, but he, too, was putting physical contact on the backburner so they wouldn't end up dropping Isaac. Isaac was just way too fragile to let get hurt!
That said, Whiskers had business? Sure, she was her own independent Digimon, but Elliot was still used to thinking of her as Asher's weird, talking cat. Then again, if any pet was going to be so independent, a cat was probably the most likely option. "Terminus, huh?" Isaac asked, filling in the blanks Asher left hanging. "So she's a strong, independent Digimon making her way in the big city. Any idea what kinda business she's handling?"
"That's right! Isaac can out-think anyone, anytime," Elliot chimed in. "I swear, his quick thinking's gotten me out of so many situations, even if I'm better with all the book stuff." At least Elliot seemed to get that Isaac wasn't the best at book learning, but he had way too much respect and admiration for his big brother to let the taunt stand unanswered. "We're a team, you know? No matter what it takes, we'll handle it all together."
Asher's comment made Isaac snicker. "What can I say? She's great," he said, tone still a tiny bit dreamy.
"Oh, don't worry. He talks about her to everyone, not just you," Elliot added helpfully.
The topic went back to Asher's happiness now, the bros hushing up a little to listen. "See that, bro? He actually moves," Isaac joked upon hearing about Asher's love for running. At least that explained how Asher managed to have such a great bod despite spending 99% of his time sleeping.
"I dunno. I think everything kinda makes me happy, at least a little," Elliot said. "I just love seeing new things. Helping people. Trying new stuff, learning. I mean, zombies don't make me happy. But everything else is pretty great!" What a happy kid!
" 'Course, video games are probably some of my favorites. I think I'll need a lot of those to de-stress after today," he added, a somewhat hasty interjection. "I mean, I like being a hero, but sometimes I wish I had more time to be me in between."

Tilting his head, the teen smiled and hummed while pretending to think. "I don't know," he drew out, "one of you seems to get in too much trouble to want to worry about!" Gee, had to wonder which brother that was! It couldn't be the one being carried around like a child, could it? Sometimes, it was hard to remember that Isaac was actually the older of the two!
At least Isaac was better with names of places than Asher seemed to be! Giving a nod, the spirit user tried to think of what it had been that Whiskers was doing. Shuffling through their conversation beforehand, in his head, he tried to remember what all had been stated. Most of Whisker's statements fell along the lines of 'don't die if you're not coming with me' or 'don't make things angry' which, hey, Asher had mostly succeeded at those! And, oh! Now he remembered! "Something about seeing a housekeeper," he debated, trying to figure out if any more details had been given. "I think he's got a house or something there?" Maybe Asher needed to pay more attention to what the cat was saying!
Then again, why did Whiskers have her own place, if she lived at Asher's house all the time? Digimon were weird.
Elliot had an awful lot of faith in his brother, didn't he? Ah, well. He wasn't going to challenge the younger boy's way of thinking. That would just be mean! Though, there was the need to add in a light, "I don't know, you were the one to get him out of this situation." Either way, he shrugged slightly at the comment about being a team. Teams were overrated. But, that was another thing that the redhead knew not to blurt.
With a small bounce of his arms, the teen tried to remind Isaac that he could easily be dropped for his comments. "I'm moving right now," he pointed out, mock-offended. "You don't stay in shape if you just sleep and eat chips all day." If only. Asher would love a life like that!
Listening to the younger brother's happiness, it didn't really seem surprising. But, really, zombies of all things? Flashing another smile, Asher looked to Elliot with a tilt of his head, "how about me? Do I make you happy?" Don't encourage it, Asher! But, now he was thinking about video games, instead. "Video games are alright. I mostly play online with friends," he added to the conversation. That made him wonder if anyone had noticed his lack of game activity, since the whole Digimon thing had started up. "Take a break from being a hero for a few days, and relax?" Probably wasn't the best suggestion, but it was the only one that Asher could think of! Being a hero was overrated, anyway.

"Hey. I know Elliot gets in trouble a lot, but he tries his best for you," Isaac chided. It was clear from the smirk on his face that he was just messing with Asher, and he was trying to restrain himself from giggling about it. "You don't gotta worry about us, though. It's been, what, nearly a year watching our own backs?" he added. "We've been at it way too long to die now. But I'm sure if we're ever about to, we'll give you a call." Someone sounded really cavalier about it! Then again, it was way easier to joke about such topics after a successful mission like this. If Isaac was, say, being tortured to death by a giant pool of red gelatin, he'd likely be a lot less merry. Maybe that defiant spark would make him joke all the harder, or maybe he'd finally break down. Who knows?
"A . . . housekeeper?" Elliot asked, a little bit confused. "If she has a house, why does she keep living at yours? Do you think she'd ever invite you to visit hers, too?" Briefly, Elliot imagined Asher having to sleep at the foot of Ms. Whiskers' bed in a giant cat bed. Digimon were weird. Then again, maybe Ms. Whiskers was seeing about having someone come over to tidy up Asher's house. Now that was a hilarious mental image! The poor guy'd probably freak out if a bunch of Digimon suddenly showed up and started rearranging the place.
Piper probably wouldn't care, though. She was scarily unflappable.
At Asher minimizing Isaac's contributions, Elliot huffed in irritation. "I was, but he's come through for me way, way more times than the reverse. And I don't think I'd have the guts to step up to the plate without him here," he said. "I know, you haven't really seen him in his element. But you should see some of the neat tricks he's pulled out! Like haunting a ghost. Man, that one was great." Isaac couldn't help but smile at one of the first successes he's had being brought up again.
Then again, Elliot couldn't stay too grumpy at Asher for long. Especially when Asher smiled like that. The boy blushed a little in surprise, looking down at his feet. "O-of course you do!" he said, not quite able to meet Asher's gaze. "And yeah, video games are great. Isaac's not much into them, but Maia and I have been dragging him into a few. I think he's starting to get it!"
Isaac didn't really care one way or another how it played out, but relaxation sure sounded nice right about now. "I think after a day like this, we earned a little break. Maybe we can rest for a day or two," he conceded, Elliot letting out a sigh of relief. "How about you? Gonna be poking around more ancient ruins when we turn our backs on ya?"
