Somehow, Sakiko managed to get through most of the morning without the fuzzbaby in her backpack whining and overwhelming her with odd emotions. It was hard for her to pay attention to her teachers, but she made sure to check on the creature between classes. Every time she stole a peek, it was sleeping.
What do I expect? It's a baby...
By lunchtime, Sakiko felt as though she was starving. That was unusual since she only needed to eat once per day. The bell for lunch sounded and many of her classmates left the room to have lunch with friends or take care of tasks. Less than a handful were left and they were all mingling among themselves; none of them were paying attention to her. Most of her classmates didn't like her anyway. They whispered behind her back that she was an arrogant snob with no compassion.
Sakiko threw her ponytail over shoulder with a haughty snort at this thought. They only think that because I can beat all of them at any athletic competition...
Her stomach gave a protesting rumble. With an impatient wrinkle of her nose, she leaned over and dug around in her backpack for her lunch. She had to be careful not to wake the fuzzbaby. Snow Botamon, it was called. It was still nestled comfortably down in her scarf on top of her books. The lunchbox was not easy to pull out, but she set it gently on her desk and opened it. Her father had made lunch this morning! Sakiko clapped her hands together and bowed her head in a prayer to thank the heavens for blessing her father with the ability to cook delicious food!
"Itadakimasu!"
The sausages were scrumptious! She continued to eat her lunch with utmost happiness when there was a whimper from beside her. Sakiko paused to listen. Another whimper, followed by a mewl. The fuzzbaby! It stared up at her with the biggest eyes she had ever seen, teary and pleading. Was it hungry? The teenager checked around the room to make sure no one was listening before she fed it a bite of rice. It made a happy squeal. Careful about what she was doing, Sakiko continued to share her lunch with the Snow Botamon. She smiled fondly at it and to reflect her happy emotion, the creature bounced up and down in her backpack.
Suddenly, the fuzzbaby started to give off a faint glow. The electronic device she had found in her room started to make noises from another pocket of her bag and the commotion of both drew the attention of her classmates. Sakiko had no time to panic. She snatched her backpack up, hugged it tight so no one could see where the light was coming from, and dashed out of the classroom down the hall. Sakiko wanted to head for the bathroom, but a small pack of girls went in. With a quiet curse, and the light around her fuzzbaby growing brighter, she sprinted further down the hall and around a corner. She didn't see the person coming around and slammed right into them.

Sophie James had a lot to think about as she arrived in school that day. The American-Japanese girl had quite an adventure over the weekend with her little brother Colin, being introduced to the world of digimon. First he had shown that his friends Luke and Bellamy were in fact... talking creatures disguised as humans with holographic technology. Then he had taken her on a trip to Terminus City in the digital world. It had been... quite an experience.
It felt odd to walk through the halls of the school and pretend everything was normal when she had literally set foot on another world. But, she did her best to continue on as normal. Sophie did her work in class, acted cheerily around her circle of friends, and at one point even bumped into Luke and Bellamy again, the two holosuited digimon apparently enrolled in Colin's class so they could be with him.
'I wonder what would happen if one day they forget their holosuits?' Sophie thought, imagining the Impmon and Elecmon strutting through the corridors in school uniform. It amused her a little.
Sophie was thinking about this as she walked down the hall to sit down and have some lunch. It was then that someone came rushing around the corner and bumped into her.
"Aaah!!" Sophie let out a soft scream as she was knocked back, almost falling over, but held on to a locker to keep herself balanced. "Christ, watch where you're going!" she shouted in english, temporarily shocked so she spoke in her native language, then realized that she should keep her temper in order. "Sorry, are you alright?" she asked the student in Japanese.
It was then that Sophie saw the girl. It was Sakiko from class. Sophie didn't know much about her, as Sophie was relatively new to the high school, only starting here last year. However, she didn't really feel any dislike for the other girl persay.
Sophie then looked at the bag, noticing it was glowing. "Er, is everything alright in that bag?" she asked, worried that it might be on fire or something.

While the person she bumped into managed to stay on their feet, Sakiko was knocked back with enough force that she fell. She was still clinging to her bag, hugging it tighter to her chest as she went down. The floor was hard and cold. If she hadn't been in such a frazzled mindset, she might have made a mental comment of how frequently she was falling since the egg appeared.
"Christ, watch where you're going!"
Sakiko vaguely recognized the crisp voice and American accent. She looked up at one of her own classmates, Sophie-Something. She was one of the top academics in the class.
"Sorry, are you alright? Er, is everything alright in that bag?"
The glowing got brighter. She clambered to her feet and ducked around the corner in to the empty hall where Sophie had been coming from. Grateful that there was no one around, Sakiko opened the bag to see what was going on. The electronic gadget (Digivice) was beeping loudly. As suddenly as it started, it stopped. The white fuzzbaby had become something...bigger. It was a yellow cat creature with big, blue eyes and the same cut on its cheek. A long tail with purple stripes flopped around in the bag, its ears giving a twitch.
"It changed," Sakiko said aloud. Her gaze slid to the girl she had bumped into. "It was a white, fuzzy baby just a few minutes ago. I... I don't know what it is."
She was babbling to someone that was practically a stranger? What was wrong with her? The teenager took a deep breath to steady herself and released it slowly. Now that the glowing had stopped and her device was no longer active, she turned to her classmate and gave a deep, formal bow.
"I am sorry I ran into you. I didn't want a lot of people to see..." She returned her gaze to her bag and mumbled, "Whatever this is."
The cat-like creature started to open its mouth, hesitated, and just yawned. Then it snuggled back into the folds of her scarf and returned to its nap as if nothing extraordinary had happened. Sakiko gave her classmate a timid glance. This was an awkward situation; she wasn't sure what to say, other than apologizing. Another odd sensation filled her and she gave a suspicious glance at the creature in her bag, which continued to sleep on. The sensation was more of an inspirational idea and Sakiko wondered what would happen if she just let it go. Would this cat cry, too? It was probably better to avoid making it cry--for now.
"Were... Were you going to eat alone? I... I was... You can come eat with me. I was eating in the classroom."

Sophie was sorry to see that the other girl had been knocked to the floor. She held out her hand to offer her to get back to her feet to make up for her rather brisk exclamation moments before.
It took her a few moments to realize what was in the bag. She recognized the device - it was a little gadget that was similar to her brother's. And there was a creature within... growing before her very eyes.
"Is that... a digimon?" Sophie asked, eyes widened with surprise. "Oh, wow, looks like there's lots of people in this school with those" she remarked to herself. This situation was odd enough, but Sophie looked around them, worried that someone might walk over and see the little digimon at any moment.
"Oh it's fine, I understand" the girl said as Sakiko apologized. When a digimon evolved, it was understandable to not want to be seen. There was a moment of silence, Sophie shouldered her own bag once more. Sakiko then offered for them to eat in the classroom.
"Yeah, I think that'd be a good idea" Sophie said, agreeing. "So... you've got no idea what that little guy is?" she asked, seeing the digimon. Wow, she didn't think that she'd be in a position to explain something like this. Well, perhaps now would be a good time to go over what she had learned in her little adventure with her brother? She accompanied Sakiko discreetly to an empty classroom.
"So then. Do you know what digimon are?" Sophie asked when the door was closed.

Ah, so it seemed that her classmate didn't know what digimon were. Sophie wondered how to explain it. Well... at least she already seemed to have bonded with her partner so that was a good thing to start off on.
"Digimon are basically creatures... no... beings that come from another dimension" she began, leaning against a desk. Sakiko asked if she was dangerous. "Well... they're not dangerous if you take care of them properly" Sophie added honestly.
"I don't have a digimon partner myself, but my little brother has twins as his partners" she added, supposing that would be a good thing to disclose. "Okay... so, the main thing about digimon? They have the ability to evolve into bigger, more powerful forms. Here, I'll show you"
Sophie moved over to the unused whiteboard, glad to see there was a marker present. She wrote down the levels of digimon that she knew - Egg, Baby, In-Training, Rookie, Champion, Perfect and Mega.
"Your digimon probably just evolved to this level here" she said, drawing an arrow from Baby to In-Training. "It's not dangerous yet, but once it evolves to Rookie, it'll get a bit tricky if it, ah, misbehaves. But don't worry, most digimon end up good. In fact the digimon I know are pretty much no different from people. They can talk, think, and most digimon have some kind of special power or another that they'll use to defend their partners from harm".
Sophie was probably all over the place here, she hadn't prepared for this impromptu 'lesson', but, she hoped that Sakiko was following what she was saying so far.

Beings that came from another dimension... That was hard for Sakiko to wrap her mind around. There were other dimensions? Science had only theories of such things, but never proof. Her gaze dropped to the creature in her bag. It was proof that there were other dimensions; there was nothing on Earth that acted or looked like this thing. This... What had the the electronic device called it? Nyaromon? Sakiko hugged the bag tighter around her almost protectively. If humans discovered that Nyaromon and these Digimon were in their world, they might confiscate them for experimentation and study. Her fuzzbaby was too small, too young for that. She would need to keep her hidden and safe.
As her classmate went on, Sophie James drew a chart to show what stage her fuzzbaby was on. It was small and probably harmless at this point, but it would grow to something bigger with each stage and become more dangerous depending on how it acted. In a way, the creature could be compared to a child and, as a teenager who did not listen to her parents at all, she grew worried that Nyaromon would become dangerous and misbehave. Sakiko wondered if maybe she should listen to her parents more and try to figure out how help this creature learn to be civilized and not turn into a savage beast.
"They can talk, think, and most digimon have some kind of special power or another that they'll use to defend their partners from harm."
Suddenly, her attention was brought back to her instructor with a steely gaze. "What harm? Is there something I should be worried about?"
The car accident flashed vividly in Sakiko's mind. Harm, danger... Again, she looked down at Nyaromon. Could this creature turn into something that would be able to protect her from things like that? If Nyaromon had come sooner, would Haruka have lived? Her grip tightened on the bag and she heard a beep. Sakiko's attention was drawn to the electronic device tucked away in a side pocket. She pulled it out to examine it and showed it to Sophie James.
"What is this thing? It stays off most of the time, but it turned on to tell me what this creature is called. First it was Snow Botamon, now it's Nyaromon. What exactly does this thing do?"

Sophie mostly was going on in a gentle voice with no interruptions so far. She hoped that Sakiko was taking this as well as she appeared. Although it seemed she had touched on something by saying the words 'protect from harm'. Sophie took a few moments to gather her thoughts about this.
"Well..." she began, struggling to remember what her brother had said about this. "Digimon come from another world, basically called 'the digital world'. It seems to be a world made up of the energy of the internet? I'm not really sure" she probably sounded kind of stupid saying that but she continued.
"Anyway, some people who get digimon partners and a digivice, they sometimes want to go to the digital world to visit it and go on adventures. Those that do so often get their digimon stronger faster, although it's entirely up to you if you want to go. There's a terminal below the Shibuya Station that your digivice can help access if you're interested, my brother took me there in fact".
Anyway, the 'harm thing'. "If you do want to go though, there's some places in the digital world that are, well, dangerous. Some digimon don't trust humans and can attack you. If they do, your partner would step in to protect you, at least that's what I heard".
Having had no partner herself, Sophie couldn't go of her own accord just yet. But since visiting there, she had been quite fascinated. Then Sakiko showed her her digivice. "Ah, that, that's a digivice. I think you get that automatically when you find a partner. It basically acts as a kind of link between you and your partner. It's best not to lose it".

"It seems to be a world made up of the energy of the internet? I'm not really sure..."
Sakiko took a moment to reflect on what Sophie James was trying to say. A world made up of the energy on the internet... The Digital World... So, it was made of coding, binary numbers? Recalling how the egg came into existence on her television screen, it made sense. An egg made up of digital data... She wondered if her egg came specifically from her game or it was just a coincidence that it fell out of her television. What if this thing wasn't supposed to be hers at all? What if it belonged to someone else? Sakiko had been playing an online multi-player game last night. What if this fuzzbaby had been meant for one of the other players on her server?
"Anyway, some people who get digimon partners and a digivice, they sometimes want to go to the digital world to visit it and go on adventures. Those that do so often get their digimon stronger faster, although it's entirely up to you if you want to go. There's a terminal below the Shibuya Station that your digivice can help access if you're interested, my brother took me there in fact." Her classmate paused for a long moment, then continued. "If you do want to go though, there's some places in the digital world that are, well, dangerous. Some digimon don't trust humans and can attack you. If they do, your partner would step in to protect you, at least that's what I heard."
There was a gateway to the Digital World? The sleeping Nyaromon looked comfortable in her pack, but what about when it got bigger? Sakiko wouldn't be able to hide it once it grew past a certain point and that would mean she couldn't protect it from people that would harm it. What was it even doing here? Why come to Earth at all? Didn't it know it would be in danger? She would need to take it back soon... Back to the Digital World, to keep it safe from humans. Shibuya Station. That was where she needed to go. Sakiko made a mental note of it, just in case.
"Ah, that, that's a digivice. I think you get that automatically when you find a partner. It basically acts as a kind of link between you and your partner. It's best not to lose it."
She stared at the gadget in her hand. Sakiko had never seen it before the egg appeared and then it was magically under her pile of books. If this was the device that would allow her access to the Digital World, losing it was not an option.
The bell signaling the end of lunch rang. Being so lost in thought, she jumped. Her food was left untouched, too, and there were still a hundred more questions swimming through her mind. Sakiko inhaled deep to quieten her mind, a technique she had learned through martial arts. Her classmate had given her the basics. It was best to do her own research from this point, or see this Digital World for herself. No, that wasn't something she wanted to do. That was a lot to take in and she just wasn't ready yet.
Rising to her feet, she packed away her lunch, closed her bag, most of the way, and slung it over her shoulder. She bowed to Sophie James, as was customary. "Thank you, James-chan. I appreciate your help. I'm sorry to have asked so many questions. You did well on explaining everything, but there are some things that can only be learned from experience. Shall we head back to class?"
She opened the door to the classroom and stepped aside to allow Sophie James to go first. Sakiko was very quiet, her gaze averted elsewhere because she was so focused on the Nyaromon in her backpack and everything she had just learned. What was she going to do now?

Sophie could tell that what she said was leaving some kind of impression on her classmate. And for this, she was glad. It sure beat ending up looking like some kind of idiot spluttering about something that she knew nothing about.
It seemed Sakiko knew the significance of the digivice when Sophie mentioned it. She hoped that she recognized the importance of such a thing, that it was capable of great power, from what her brother had told her at least.
Then the bell rang, signifying the end of lunch. Sophie glared up at the clock, annoyed that break had lasted so shortly. Well then, it seemed their impromptu meeting was over. Sophie did all she could to keep confidentiality, erasing the words she had written on the board about the things to know about digimon.
"That's fine" Sophie replied, giving a quick bow back. "I'm glad I helped out. Just... take care of your partner, alright? They're a living sentient being, so, they understand the things you say around them".
She hoped this was enough training for now, that she hadn't confused someone enough so that they mistreated their digimon. Sakiko held the door open for her. Sophie gave a nod of thanks and proceeded through it first, making way to the next class. Well then. Even though she had taken little notice of Sakiko now, hopefully once this digimon business was sorted, maybe she might make friends for later on?
