Light. That was the first thing the creature experienced. Light after so many years of darkness. The pain had steadily healed, day by day, until finally, it seemed that it was alive once more.
There wasn't much to this creature - a mere grey blob of slime with a single red eye. Beneath it was cold concrete, above it was imposing grey buildings. The creature shivered as it sat on the hard stone ground. It wanted to move from this place. It tried to hop, and it did. It tried to make a noise, and emitted a bubbly squeaking sound.
Delighted at its progress, the creature then wanted to find someone. Someone it had lost long ago.
Another day of school had passed. And it had been as long and dreary as any other for Makoto Terauchi. The girl walked alone through the streets of Western Shibuya, her bag slung over her shoulder. Headphones were in her ears as she listened to music, cutting herself off from the fellow pedestrians.
The closer she came to home, the quieter the streets were, as she liked it. Makoto had never liked crowds. Especially not on days like this when she was in a bad mood. A social studies essay she had worked hard on had been marked poorly by the teacher. Not a fail, but Makoto felt disgusted that her work had been invalidated like that. She put it down to a divergence of opinions between her and some second rate educator. But Makoto saw it as a spiteful mark against her record. Especially when every other dullard in that class seemed to get a higher mark for writing down something more 'compatible' with that teacher's opinions.
Oh well. At least tomorrow would be better with Science and Math classes. At least in those, opinions didn't matter. There were only facts.
As Makoto walked past an alley a block away from her apartment, she noticed something strange. As she continued walking... she could sense something moving behind her. Was she being followed?
Makoto turned and looked. And there, on the ground, was something she had never seen before. She gasped and stepped back a few steps, thinking it was a giant bug or something, but, it seemed to be more than that. A jiggly grey blob with a red eye, staring up at her. It seemed to be emitting bubbly squeaking noises, bouncing on the spot slightly joyously.
Makoto's look of disgust turned to curiosity. She took out her headphones, looking closely at the creature.
"What... are you?" she asked.

Katsura was walking down the street, now that she was back in the human world she was starting to wonder where to put herself. In her arms she was carrying Nyao the salamon and it was always strange for her to see be in the richer parts of Shibuya. While she could return to the slum where she came from, there was not much for her to come after except bad memories.
This part of Shibuya in contrast was well-kept and the families living here had enough money that she could sustain herself if only a few of them were just reasonably good of heart or at least gullible enough to fall for her scams. Before Katsura could even consider a scam she saw a tiny slime blob, being relativity used to the digital world she assumed that it was some kind of digimon probably a weak one. It seemed to take an interest in a girl Katsura had never seen before. Something about Makoto's demeanor made Nyao uncomfortable and she found herself hiss by reflex.
"Nyao, we have been over this before. You can't just antagonize people who haven't done me anything." Nyao stopped hissing but kept watching Makoto with suspicion. "I know, but there is something about that girl that is wrong." "What is it?" "I'm not sure. I can just feel it."

Lugh was walking down the street, minding his own business. Ever so often he would jump over bench or parkour around a bus stop. He had nothing else better to do. His Digivice was tucked away safe away and though he hadn't used it yet, he was curious as to what would happen when he did.
He sees a familiar face across the street, the girl with the Digimon from the park the other day. He makes his way over to her and pats her on the head when he nears her.
"Sup Kid?" He asks, retreating out of arms reach of the girl, grinning mischievously.

As Makoto continued to look at the little creature, she suddenly realized that others seemed to be converging to her location. She looked first at Katsura, who seemed to be regarding the creature here with a kind of familiarity, like she had seen something like it before.
Then she looked at an older boy that approached the girl with an even more familiar persona, like they were close friends. Makoto wondered what they were up to. But it was the third figure that truly caught her attention.
A little beige puppy that seemed to hiss at her. Makoto looked back, wondering what the hell was wrong with this thing. She had done nothing wrong. Why was it acting like this?
Then the little grey blob seemed to jump to her defense, standing between the beige puppy and Makoto, making energetic squeaking noises at the creature. Its red eye assumed a fierce expression, as though it was defending Makoto. The girl really had no way of figuring out what was going on, but she recognized the expression of loyalty at the very least.
Well, supposing she should start getting facts in order, she supposed she might seek them. "Hello" she said to Katsura. "Do you know what these... creatures are?". She assumed that Katsura knew about them seeing as she had one at her side. She kept a calm expression, thinking now would not be the right time to be hysterical. This situation interested her significantly.
Makoto looked at Lugh curiously, wondering if he knew what was happening as well.

Katsura was interrupted in her thoughts about the strange girl as Lugh appeared out of nowhere patting her on her head. A part of her did not understand how she is supposed to feel about this gesture while another part recognized it as a new way of bullying her. Katsura did not react at all to being patted, no smile no angry look, just the same cold emotionless stare. Katsura didn't even try to get eye contact with Lugh either. In the beginning such anti-reactions was creeping Nyao out, but by now she had adapted to it and remained in the role as Katsura's rag-doll. The only time Nyao broke out of the role as a toy was to occasionally send Lugh a death-glare only to go back in character before Lugh could prove Nyao was alive.
In her dull emotionless voice that made her sound like less human and without looking Lugh in the eyes, she responded. "Wow, I've been called a cat and a shrimp... People hit me too many times for me to count... somehow you find a new way to make me feel even less... Congratulations?" Then Katsura turned to Nyao who still played the role of a rag-doll; "Come on Nyao... This boy isn't worth our time" Katsura had apparently forgotten that talking to a doll as if it was a person makes one look insane in normal people's eyes. Once out of earshot, Katsura whispered to Nyao: (If he tries again, you have my consent)
By then Makoto and the tiny digimon approached Katsura, there was something familiar over Makoto. Katsura couldn't put her finger on it but Makoto reminded her of someone. The digimon seemed to come Makoto to her aid, it didn't surprise Katsura that a digimon would retaliate to Nyao's behavior, but that it shown so little care about being in public surprised her. Still, Katsura owed Makoto an answer to her question: "They're called digital monsters, I think this one wants to be your partner."

Lugh chuckles before smirking at the young girl and her ‘rag-doll’. He knew the girl was more than a little off, and that the ragdoll she had was a Digimon. He liked messing with people, and knew how to hit their buttons just right. And of course now that he could spirit digivolve, he wasn’t afraid of the consequences either.
“I try.” He says to her as she starts to walk away. He then turns his attention to the other girl and the small digimon. “Oh look, another tamer person, with their new digimon.” He says as he pulls out his Digivice and holds it toward the small Digimon. After a moment he nods his head, then looks suspiciously at Katsura and her 'rag-doll'. He then scans the doll. He smirks and then puts the scanner away. “Seems to me you got yourself a Kuramon there..” He looks between the small digimon and then the older girl. “You’re world is about to be flipped upside down. Lord knows mine was after I got my Digivice. Names Lugh, by the way. Don’t let my friends ‘rag-doll’ fool you, it’s a digimon too.

This interaction was... disturbing to say the very least. Not only because of the discrepancy of their ages, Makoto had thought the boy was the girl's brother or at least someone familiar enough to make that kind of gesture. But she recognized that it seemed to cause her discomfort. And she had been hit too? Makoto wasn't sure about that. Was it a story she was making to make the boy feel bad? Well... she would observe for longer if that was the case.
However, Makoto didn't speak out against it. The older boy seemed to be familiar with digimon so she would hope to ask him some questions. However she would prefer it if he didn't do the same to her as well.
She paid attention to Katsura talking to her. "Digital monsters. I see" she looked at the 'digimon' again. Makoto was kind of familiar with this story - it was a common theme in video games. An odd creature would seek to become partners with the protagonist and fight with others to become stronger.
Makoto then turned to Lugh. He had read the digimon with a curious little device, and said the creature was a 'Kuramon'. "I see. Thank you" she said politely, picking up the 'Kuramon'. Thankfully it wasn't as wet and slimy as she had feared, mostly feeling like a soft bag of gel. It seemed to be happy as she did so.
"You're happy to be my partner even if you don't know me?" she asked Kuramon. To her surprise, the blob made a noise as though in the affirmative. Despite herself, Makoto smiled. "Okay then, let's be partners" she said. And Kuramon seemed to be overjoyed, jiggling around in her grip.
Makoto then turned to Lugh. "So I see, you both have partners as well?" she asked. "Also what was that device you were holding just now? Where did you get it?" she was curious. It seemed it was a tool for interacting with digimon. She hoped to get one herself if it was important for being a partner of Kuramon.

"I have no idea who this creep is" Aside from making sure that Makoto did not think of them as friends. Katsura was completely ignoring Lugh by this point including not making any body-language aimed at him. In her eyes, Lugh did not deserve her attention. Only Nyao paid attention to Lugh and that was with malicious intentions. Specifically, Nyao waited for an excuse to utilize Katsura's rare permission to fight. But so far he was too civil to justify an attack even though he was scanning her, making her disguise a moot point. The closest to an aggression Nyao could come up with was biting the air closest to Lugh when he tried to scan her to make it clear that his presence wasn't appreciated the slightest by either of them. Compared to Makoto who just made Nyao uncomfortable, Lugh by contrast had turned her outright hostile, only playing nice to show respect for social demeanor. To emphasize how little Lugh meant to Katsura, not once did she acknowledge that he was making gestures to her nor that he scanned Nyao preferring to pay full attention to Makoto, who was asking about Lugh's digidevice. Lugh might as well have been a ghost.
It surprised Katsura that Makoto hadn't gained her digidevice yet, after all she gained her just by poking Nyao. By all means Makoto should have one. "It's called a digidevice, you should have got one by now. I'm a little confused to be honest."

Lugh bows his head slightly after being thanked. "Tis but a small deed." He says in an overly dramatic theater sounding voice. Chuckling, he turns to the other girl.
"I am many things...and sure and a 'creep' might be one of them, but it's not polite to just come out and say it like that...yeesh." he acts as if his feelings were deeply hurt, but then smirks and turns his and attention back to Makoto.
"I do not have a partner. I am what's called a Spirit Wielder. I can harness the spirits of certain Digimon and turn into them myself, so long I have the correct Spirit totem."

Makoto noted that Katsura did not acknowledge Lugh's presence and tried to ignore him. Indeed, her own digimon was rather hostile to him. Was he someone to look out for? Well, until he did something that warranted that hostility, Makoto would simply prefer to continue this conversation.
Katsura then mentioned that she should have a digivice of her own by now. Makoto was slightly confused.
"I don't think I-" she reached into her jacket pocket, and realized that there was something in there that wasn't there before. It wasn't her cellphone, it was something else. Her eyes widened as she pulled it out. It looked like some advanced piece of gadgetry. Something she definitely hadn't seen before. "How odd" she remarked, trying to turn it on. The words 'Digivice Online' lit up on the screen. "Hm. Well then, it seems I do have one after all".
Supposing that enough favours had been done with this conversation to allow Makoto to think of these two as 'acquaintances', she thought she might introduce herself now. "I'm Makoto Terauchi by the way" she said to them. "What are your names?"
Then Lugh said that he didn't have a partner, but wielded a spirit instead. This made Makoto quite confused. "There are other types of digimon, found in totems?" she repeated. "That's very interesting".
Something about Lugh's words made Kuramon look like it was familiar with what he was saying. It looked curiously up at him, swivelling around in Makoto's arms.

"I am many things...and sure and a 'creep' might be one of them" For once Nyao agreed with Lugh in that he was many things, although her suggestions for what else he could be can't be written without violating the TOS. Whatever it was, it was not flattering. Meanwhile Katsura kept ignoring Lugh, behind the scenes she did listen to the revelation that some humans can turn into digimon themselves but aside from not wanting to interact with Lugh, she had little to no faith in Lugh's intellect for the time being. For this reason she continued talking to Makoto as if Lugh did not exist completely ignoring his comment about being called a creep.
It lessened Katsura's confusion to see that Makoto had in fact got her own digi-device after all, now Makoto had taken the first step of introduction and Katsura was more than willing to withheld social demeanor by returning the gesture: "It's an honor to meet you Terauchi-Chan" Katsura bowed, "My name's Ise Katsura and this is my partner Nyao." Nyao nodded.

Lugh smiles at Makoto and starts to say something, but his phone begins to ring and he steps away to take the call. After a couple moments of hushed arguing, he hangs the phone up and sighs.
"Sorry ladys, it appears im needed at work." He waves, turns and starts to jog away. Just before he disappears down another road, a black van pulls up, two thugish looking men jump out, grab him and throw him into the van, before squealing tires and leaving.

Well then, it seemed that Lugh had to be off somewhere for an appointment of some kind. Makoto nodded as he excused himself and the older boy seemed to run away... until he was promptly kidnapped. Makoto blinked at the sight of it. She wondered what she should do about that.
It seemed Katsura didn't much care for Lugh so, given the situation, and that Makoto didn't have a car herself to take up the chase, she decided to continue the conversation. Besides, Lugh seemed to be able to handle himself without too much effort.
"Alright" Makoto said to Katsura. "I suppose I might ask a few things about what I'm meant to do to look after Kuramon, if that's okay?" she asked. Kuramon bubbled happily still in her arms.
"Firstly, Nyao looks a bit bigger than him. I take it that she's a digimon that's grown stronger?" she asked, wondering if that was true of all digimon. "Secondly, do you know how digimon get stronger? Do they need to fight or do they just grow naturally?"

Katsura didn't react while Lugh was getting leaving, though the moment when he was dragged into a van and 'conveniently' out of ear-shout Katsura finally acknowledged his presence enough to comment: "Baka..." Katsura said while she saw the van driving away with a less than willing Lugh apparently kidnapping was not something that could shake Katsura's world. Nyao reacted by sending Lugh a smug smile convinced that Lugh will finally had karma coming his way. Katsura's sense of justice had slightly rubbed off on Nyao.
Another sign that the kidnapping didn't affect Katsura at all was how she could casually resume her conversation with Makoto as if nothing happen.
Katsura nodded to Makoto as to approve of getting asked questions about digimon. And so Makoto had for now 3 questions for them both. The first 2 questions were easy for Katsura to relate to; "Well, if I remember what Nyao said right, a bonded digimon grows with their partner's emotions. The first time we shared a hug and the 2nd time... Stuff happen." Nyao nodded. Now the third question was harder to answer and Katsura found herself having to look at Nyao for guidance. "We don't have to fight, as we get older we transform into better forms eventually." Katsura looked curious at Nyao, "Like a caterpillar?" "What is a caterpillar?" "Nevermind" Katsura said as she shrugged.

Makoto was a little confused over the logic of what Katsura was saying. "So, digimon evolve over... emotional bonds?" she repeated, hoping she got that right. She looked at Kuramon. How could she bond emotionally with something that couldn't speak to her?
Well... as she looked into that red eye, she noted that there was some affection there. And it could at least understand the things it told her. Maybe if she tried talking to it later on when they were home, that might make something happen?
"I think I understand" she eventually said. The answer to her next question was more straightforward. In that fighting did seem to help trigger the growth of digimon, but at the same time, it did happen naturally. Makoto understood the caterpillar analogy, even if Kuramon didn't.
"I see, so Kuramon would be equivalent to the Larval stage of digimon" she mused. "Alright. I think I understand. My next question, what can I do to keep Kuramon healthy? Is there any place in Tokyo I can go to have him healed if he gets sick or hurt? Oh, and can Kuramon eat any kind of food or is there special digimon food I have to get?"
She realized she was asking more questions than she usually was. She slowed down a little. "Sorry for all the questions. I just want to make sure I raise Kuramon correctly" she explained. It would be absolutely terrible if somehow she threw away her good fortune by neglecting Kuramon in the first place. Especially if one day it would grow into something much better.
