In had been about a week since Lissa had fallen into the Digital World. A world that was indisputably as insane as some of the stories that Lissa had read in school. Albeit much more interesting, of course. At least, she had found a friend in this world. The first time they had met, VeeVee and Lissa literally ‘butted heads’ as she arrived into this world. Well, she had ‘fallen’ more than arrived. Lissa landed into the grassy knolls and straight into the blue dragon. Holding her head as a bump grew on her forehead, she got her first look of the Digital World and then the first look of her partner-to-be. One argument later, they were already indisputable friends. It was as simple as that.
Smiling as she recollected the memories of the past week, her hands cupped on the back of her head. The two of them walked down a worn path through the grass which unfortunately seemed to be endless. Every so often, Lissa and VeeVee would look at each other and smile. They walked for about another hour until the sky had almost completely changed from the blanket of clouds on a brightly blue backdrop to a warm twilit orange. VeeVee yawned loudly, literally about to say the words that most children say on long road trips – ‘Are we there yet.’
Lissa merely smiled at her partner and pointed. Over the next hill stood a row of strange metallic structures, “Does that count?” As they drew closer, it was clear that the structures were actually curiously shaped houses built from sheet metal. “Close enough?” As soon as Lissa and VeeVee crossed the outskirts and entered the town, various monsters began to appear from the structures in droves. The creatures in question resembled lit candles with shimmering gold stand held up the wax body. The wax splashed down the sides of the metal and seemed to work as the monsters arms. Each of the creature’s long wicks burned with large monstrous flames.
The tightly knit crowd stared silently at Lissa and she back at them. After a minute, the silence broke and the monsters began to whisper amongst themselves. “An outsider,” one whispered. “Someone call the elder, quick” whispered another. “Are we in danger?”
Lissa held up her hands in apology for causing such a fuss, unsure what to say to console them. VeeVee elbowed her in the arm as if to say ‘say something to calm them down’. “You’re a hero of justice, right?”
As the crowd grew more and more restless, a sound like worn metal cut through the antsy crowd. At the sound, the crowd split in two like the Red Sea, creating a path between the two. Slowly, another one of the monsters drew closer. Physically it was similar but with noticeable differences. It appeared older; the wax was dripping down its chin like a beard and it leaned on a long stick. “Ah, guests. Are you the ones that we asked too-- too come for my youngest child?” It said, whilst coughing in the midst of the conversation. Lissa tilted her head slowly but then smiled brightly and nodded. “Hello, I’m Lissa! I’m the Hero of Justice! The blanket that warms you on a cold winter’s night,” putting her hand out for the creature to shake. It didn’t take it but it nodded in thanks, instead. “We are the Candlemon and this,” he said, turning around to show the row of metallic shacks that stood on each side of them. “– is our village. “It’s nice to meetcha’,” she said, still smiling brightly; hands cupped on the back on her head. “So, how can we help?”
The Elder Candlemon coughed again twice before carrying on. He looked much more grave all of a sudden. “One of my children. One of my poor children has fallen ill and we have no idea why. We have tried all our usual sources of medicines and curative but nothing has worked, thus far...”
Lissa was then pushed by the crowd of Candlemon towards the largest shack. They didn’t go inside but merely stood outside and watched. Large red orb like eyes. As if they were excited to see her get started.
Shrugging to VeeVee, Lissa ducked down and entered the shack. The room was quite empty except for a large table which stood in the center of the room. It was lit dimly by a row of small cream candles which lit the room just enough to see. The creature on the table was the reason she had been summoned, however. It was another Candlemon but it was shaking and rocking backward and forward. It had a cold sweat on its waxy forehead and it moaned endlessly.
“Are you okay?” Lissa asked the Candlemon but it didn’t answer and merely moaned again. “How long had he been like this?” VeeVee then asked the Elder. The Elder leaned on his stick and then stared at Veemon before replying, “...about a week now.”
It was clear that the Elder was both troubled by the illness plaguing his child and feeling a little guilty, that he couldn’t fix it. Lissa put her hand on the arm of the Elder and said, “I’ll help, best I can!”
The Elder was forced to leave the round room for a few moments to subside the outcry from outside which had been growing louder and louder. In the meantime, Lissa and VeeVee moved closer to the Candlemon who was writhing madly on the table, his mouth lulling open. A shimmer of silver caught Lissa’s eye as she looks down at the poor creature. “Normal Digimon don’t have silver objects at the back of their throats, right?”
VeeVee shook his head twice and they both moved even closer to the table. When the Candlemon screamed with pain and its mouth fell open, it was clear that something was in fact stuck in his mouth. Slowly and hesitantly, she poked the object with a single finger. The writhing continued which made it hard to aim but eventually, the ‘something’ moved. Another poke and another moan of pain. VeeVee opened his mouth to say to stop, it was hurting him too much. That was when something strange happened. The steel object dropped. The Candlemon lurched forwards and spit it out onto the table in front of them before dropping back onto the table. The object itself was egg-shaped, except for a long sharp blade stuck from the top. It fell onto the table and rolled. Lissa moved forward and hesitantly picked it up with one hand. It was oddly warm. Both VeeVee and Lissa stared at the egg in amazement, “That’s one crazy egg.” Unbeknownst to the two of them who were quite transfixed with the egg, the Candlemon was shaking again even more madly than before. The table tocked from hide to side and then, the body of the Candlemon began to change.
The small wax body stretched out into fully formed arms and legs followed by a human-sized body. When the light faded it was clear, that the body was made from a burning mass of fire. They turned to see the creature trying to sit up. “That’s Meramon. It Digivolve –”
VeeVee didn’t get time to finish this thought as the Meramon let out a cold laugh. The table it sat upon began to melt slightly from its mere touch and the room was starting to fill with an acrid smoke. “FIRE BALL!” With one hand, the Meramon threw a large fireball like a baseball which missed both VeeVee and Lissa thankfully but did set the wall behind them alight. “This room is too small to fight in, RUN!”
Without a second thought, the two of them ran from the room which was quickly lighting up with the flames. The Meramon followed arms out stretched like a zombie. It let out a terrifying roar which caused the Candlemon to flinch. “Citizens of… wherever we are! Move back! We shall deal with this!” The Candlemon slowly did as they were told and ducked for cover behind the houses, so only the wicks stuck out, still ablaze.
“Hey ugly, try this! Vee-Headbutt!” Veemon launched himself at Meramon’s chest but the attack seemed to do little than aggravate it. “Don’t forget me! Lissa Kick of Justice!” Using her athletic ability, she jumped onto one of the tiny shacks and then launched herself upwards, kicking the same spot as Veemon – square in the chest. The Meramon merely laughed menacingly, reached out and scooped Lissa up in its burning arms. “Ouch, ouch, ouch. That’s boiling,” Lissa screamed as the heat overcame her. Her suit wasn’t built for heat. It wasn’t technically built for anything, except for an interesting aesthetic. “Let me go you big ugly – ” With her one free arm, Lissa punched the Meramon in the face with all her might. It didn’t do anything other than burn her gloved hand slightly. “VeeVee, assist? Assist!”
Veemon moved in again to perform another headbutt but again it seemed unlikely to do anything. The Meramon had enough and began to squeeze Lissa tightly in his grip. “You can do it!! Go on! I believe in you!!” Just like with the Candlemon before, VeeVee burst into light as did the egg which she still loosely held in her hand. “Digi Armor Energize!” Lissa was unsure why she said it, it just felt right but it worked!
VeeVee body extended into a more mature body, coated in a fiery armor plating. His head had its own plating complete with the long metal spike. Each hand was covered by long gauntlets with metallic claws. VeeVee stepped forward, ready to fight again. “Hey ugly, who’s in the mood for a barbecue. Knuckle Fire!” A stream of fireballs shot from the gauntlets and struck the Meramon. While it didn’t do much to stop the creature it was enough to force it to let go of Lissa who fell with Flamedramon catching her seconds later. She seeemed unconcious and her clothes and skin slightly burned but still okay. “I’ll teach you a lesson for hurting Lissa,” Flamedramon said.
“Fire Rocket!” The body of Flamedramon burst alight with a fiery aura which surrounded him fully. He shot up like a firework, grabbing the Meramon simultaneously. Together they flew up into the air and with one mighty flip, VeeVee threw the Meramon back to the earth. With a terrible crash, Meramon landed creating a small crater when he landed. “Ow-ow-wow-wow...” He moaned, finally subdued.
After a second, Flamedramon landed, looking down at Lissa. He put out a claw and helped her to her feet. “Thank's VeeVee! You did it” The Meramon glowed again but merely returned to his former state. He looked up at the Elder and then to Lissa and VeeVee before asking. “What happened?” The Elder merely chuckled and said it was a long story.
Lissa and VeeVee stayed in the Candlemon Village for a few days while recovering from their injuries. The burns were quickly sorted by a strange ointment that stung but removed the burns instantly. The Elder also explained that the egg seemed to be some kind of mythical digital object which imbues power to a worthy candidate that shares the same trait that the egg holds. In this case, Courage. Lissa and VeeVee both showed a lot of courage to help. Smiling, Lissa held up the egg which then suddenly changed into the ray of orange light and shot into her D-Terminal. “I guess now, we can use it anytime?”
A few hours later, they left to carry on their adventure waving goodbye to their new friends, the Candlemon. A few meters down the path, they crossed another Digimon. An oddly monkey-like with shimmering sunglasses and the brightest of smiles. With a wide smirk, he spoke loudly more to himself than to Lissa and VeeVee; “Don’t worry folks. Etemon is here to solve all your problems!”
He was so into his conversation with himself, he didn’t even notice Lissa or VeeVee, whom he bumped straight into. Looking over his glasses, he saw them looking confusedly back at him. “Out of the way, kids. I got work to do. Magic to...magic,” and with that he strode past the pair and into the Candlemon village, cracking his knuckles.
“You don’t think he was the...” Lissa started. “...the one that the Candlemon hired to help sort their problem?” VeeVee finished. Shrugging, they carried on down the road.
