Duftmon heard Flaremon's attack from behind him. He could feel the heat of it, but he trusted him so much that he didn't flinch. The blazing lion's head passed straight through without harming him, but the warmth made him feel envigorated as it did so. The attack slammed against GranDracmon and exploded, causing the two mouths on his torso to cease their screaming.
"Well done, Flaremon!" Duftmon shouted toward his friend. He raised his sword again, this time swishing it in a powerful motion while shouting "Aussterben!"
This attack caused a circle of light to form around GranDracmon, then spiralled inward. It was something the huge digimon could not avoid. By now he realized that his large bulk, so useful for crushing smaller digimon, simply made it harder to avoid the Royal Knight class digimon's attacks. By now, he was running scared. However, he had one last trick up his sleeve.
"Eye of the Gorgon!" he snapped, his eyes glowing with grey energy. Duftmon momentarily halted from its effects, feeling it almost trying to take over his digicore. However... something was wrong with it.
GranDracmon realized this too. His attack faded, his eyes glowing back to normal, then he sneered. "I see..." he said. "Your digicore appears to be overheating, Duftmon. It's cracked and damaged. While I don't seem to be able to control it, well, that problem will soon solve itself won't it?"
"I'll see you die first" Duftmon promised. But he supposed that Flaremon would find out what's wrong now.

Flaremon watched in horror as GranDracmon used a strange technique on Duftmon. To his surprise, it didn't seem to work at all. When he learned why, however, his partner's request to fight with him one last time took on a whole different meaning.
Was Leomon...dying? Rage and sadness began to consume Flaremon. He had nothing but hatred for this GranDracmon, human or no.
"Ok, Leomon," he said, fighting back tears, yet with an angry bite to his tone. "If this is truly our final bout together, then I'll give everything!" The temperature in the jungle began to rise even more as Flaremon focused all his energy to give everything he had to take out their final mark. This had an unintended effect, as he suddenly was wrapped in an orb of white-hot flames. What would come of this was anyone's guess.

It seemed that indeed the end was coming. Duftmon should have realized that it couldn't have been this easy to achieve mega without any kind of backfire. The strain of his injury on his digicore had brought it to its limit.
But each second he was alive, he would devote all his energy to putting an end to this evil. To this... monster that had ended the lives of so many and wanted to any so much more. Including Flaremon if he had his way. The battle was not over yet though.
"Crystal Revolution!" GranDracmon roared, sending a burst of energy at Duftmon. Immediately he felt chilled and was in danger of freezing, but he lunged out of the ice, it shattering all over his body. The remaining shards of ice mingled with the data lightly rising from him.
"Erste Welle!" Duftmon shouted, swishing his sword, GranDracmon slamming against a nearby tree. He then saw that something was happening to Flaremon. He watched with anticipation.

The temperature, as quickly as it had risen, began to drop. One could literally feel the heat gravitate towards Flaremon, as though it was being carried away by the wind. It seemed that every last bit of heat had been stolen by the Ultimate level. All at once, it exploded in a brilliant burst, with a completely different form standing where Flaremon had once stood. "Flaremon Mega Digivolve to...Apollomon!"Coronamon had just recently managed to Digivolve to his Ultimate level. The raw emotion he was experiencing was enough to take him even higher to this new form, but it would come at a ridiculous cost. The strain on his Digicore from the sudden transformation into a form that he wasn't ready for would cause huge problems for him later on. The best case scenario was that he'd never be able to Digivolve past his Rookie form again. At worst, it was possible that his data would literally rip itself apart and he'd never be able to reform. Ready to fight, and consumed with anger, Apollomon lunged with incredible speed straight at GranDracmon. As he approached, his fist burst into white-hot flame. "Sunfire Punch!"

Duftmon smiled beneath his helmet as he saw that his friend had evolved as far as him. He was so far uninjured, at least he hoped, so perhaps this wouldn't be the end for him.
GranDracmon meanwhile screamed in agony as Apollomon's attack razed him. His data was flickering from the flames, and when the attack was over, he was charred at the impact point. This battle was in its end phase.
With the last of his strength, Duftmon slashed his sword across the evil Spirit digimon's body. Rather than the scream of earlier, he merely made some terrible rattling noises, before finally falling. His body disintegrated into data, floating away in the wind.
All that was left was the human that had appeared there earlier. He lay still on the ground. Duftmon didn't check if he was still alive, for the last of his strength had faded.
Duftmon then collapsed himself, his body slowly fading away like GranDracmon's had. It seemed that his digicore had finally expired. He looked up at Apollomon, hoping he'd be alright.
"Apollomon..." he said, quietly. "You look... amazing" he grinned a little again.

The battle was over. Apollomon stood triumphantly as the form of GranDracmon finally disappeared, but the moment didn't last long. Duftmon had collapsed, and seemed to be slowly fading away. The now-Mega Digimon rushed to his partner's side and knelt down beside him.
"I owe it all to you, old friend," Apollomon said, smiling. There was a sense of bittersweetness to their achievement. As the adrenaline from the battle wore off, Apollomon realized what was about to happen.
"Leomon..." he said, voice starting to break. "You can't die here. I don't know what I'd do without you. Please..." The strain of the sudden evolution finally took it's toll, and Apollomon suddenly reverted back to his Rookie form. "Don't go." Tears streamed down Coronamon's face, and it seemed that his data was starting to glitch out a bit. It was unclear whether or not he'd make it through the day, either.
"I...love you."

Duftmon didn't want this. Seeing the power that he and his friend achieved, the things they had done together... he didn't want to die. But, alas, it was what was going to happen. He looked as Apollomon reverted to his rookie form, horrified at him glitching.
Coronamon tried to get him to stay in this world. But... Duftmon couldn't. At least, not as he was now. And those last words made him open his eyes wide in surprise, then his expression softened, realizing that Coronamon's behaviour to him made sense now.
"I love you too, Coronamon" he said, stroking the orange lion cub's face. "You're a strong digimon, I know you can live on without me. And besides... we're digimon. This... won't be the end".
All below his shoulders had disintegrated now. As his face disappeared, Duftmon left him with his final words.
"We will meet again..."
Then, there was nothing. His data soared into the sky, dancing in the breeze.

The tears streaming down Coronamon's face became more intense as Duftmon brought a fading hand to caress him. As the last remnants of his data flittered away, Coronamon began to cry out in pain. Pain from the loss of someone so close to him, but also pain from his overheating Digicore. Before he passed out, he noticed a few figures approaching the body of the human he and Leomon had presumably just killed.
When Coronamon woke up next, he found himself in a hospital bed in Terminus City. The doctors and nurses that had taken care of him explained his situation. He had been in a coma for nearly 4 days immediately following his retrieval from the jungle. They also went on to explain that the damage he had inflicted on his Digicore was so severe that he would never be able to Digivolve again, much less participate in extensive combat. Most interestingly, the doctors observed there was a small crack in the Digicore that didn't seem to heal properly. They decided that it was mostly harmless, but noted that after the fight, a trace amount of data not matching Coronamon's had mixed itself in. Though, it seemed to be data from another Beast Digimon, so it wouldn't cause any long-term problems.
The mercenary federation that Coronamon and Leomon had been a part of understood the situation immediately. For their success in ridding the Digital World of this menace, the team was given the highest honors and praise that could've possibly been given to them, and Coronamon was honorably discharged. The two of them would be remembered as two of the greatest mercenaries to ever live.
For a time, Coronamon wandered the Digital World, alone and unsure what to do with the rest of his life. The damage to his Digicore had also likely shortened his natural lifespan dramatically. Eventually, he settled back down in Terminus City and opened a restaurant. This restaurant, Flamme Leon, became one of the Digital World's most well-respected and critically acclaimed eating establishments with Coronamon as the owner and head chef.
Not a day went by that Coronamon didn't think about Leomon or his time with him. It was a great source of sadness for him, and it led him to be extremely depressed for most of the rest of his life. There was a pain in his heart that would never heal, but he still lived on, unknowingly carrying a tiny part of Leomon's heart with him.
Bits, if you please.
