Corrupted Wood (N-Rank) (5/5)

Sunflowmon had to admit that the name of this place - 'The Tyrant's Labyrinth' wasn't the ideal name for a place to attract tourists. A twisting maze of thick tree trunks, bushes and plants, more or less lined with thorns, well, not the ideal place for relaxing on a vacation.
However, before now, at least there had been a feeling of home for all the digimon that lived here. Sunflowmon could remember gliding around here as a Lalamon, the air thick with pollen and the scent of nectar as the vast woodland sprouted with new plantlife. Colourful mushrooms growing on the ground, flowers sprouting on the bushlands, a rich green canopy above that the sun barely managed to twinkle through. It was all very pretty, and so... well... 'alive'.
That was more than could be said for it now. In her last journey around the labyrinth (taking care not to venture too far), she had seen a miserable sight. Barely any tree had any green left on it by now. All that was left was dry, dying wood. Barely any leaves remained on them, and the few that remained were brown and dying. And, to Sunflowmon, it seemed that the deeper one ventured into the twisted thick forest, the worse it got. In fact, she had seen with horror that many trees had no leaves at all, but, seemed to be seeping black data from the twigs and stems that would have previously supported leaves and fruit.
Just what was happening here? Sunflowmon would have investigated further, but, she felt... something evil in the middle of the woods. Something much more powerful than she could handle.
And so she had sent forth the message to a group of surrounding humans and digimon. She had heard nice things about the humans that were adventuring around the digital world, so she notified many of them. Also, she made sure to notify any strong independent digimon that may be in the area too.
She hoped that enough would answer her call to this. This was a problem that needed solving. After all, this... 'corruption' was beginning to spread through the rest of the forest. If it wasn't stopped, well, the entire Timberlands could be put at risk. And that would of course would be disastrous.
OOC: In your introduction, you'd basically just assemble outside the Labyrinth where Sunflowmon is waiting. You would have received a notification through your D-Terminal or solo digimon equivalent, or otherwise read upon it on a noticeboard in a village or town in the Eastern Timberlands region. First up, we'll assemble and Sunflowmon will brief you.

A negative presence deep within a forest that acted like a blight and consumed it without remose? Now that was a task that sounded just perfect for the Sagitamon, and she was more than glad to help out for a small reward. After all, she had already helped out fixing the Network Plains around Terminus, so why not go beyond and contribute to the overall vitality of the digital world? She could live comfortably from it and it gave her a moral highground she enjoyed dearly. A supporter and coordinator through and through, that was how she was.
Cion might only be a digimon of medium levels yet, but as a supporter she could help out in ways only few digimons could. So if there was a big, strong group at hand, even on both sides of the argument, she knew she would be of relevance to the mission. Eventually, alone, she reached the dying remnants of the labyrinth where Sunflowmon awaited her and others who heard a call and answered. Thus far, only the Sagitamon was here, but she was confident within her heart that other good digimon would arrive as well to help out. The world was not such a cruel and savage place as some might call it after all, especially with civilization rising with each and every day.
With a gentle bow and a hand reached out to her, Sagitamon introduced herself with a warm yet composed smile. "Good day, Sunflowmon. As you might expect, I am here to help you with the forest's problem." She spoke supportively yet firmly, showing she was taking this task seriously despite her status as a mere champion. With her crystal-bow on her back and Ocarina in her pockets, she would not admit defeat until the very last straw. She hoped others would have similar determination.

John and his Agumon partner, Casimeir, were currently purchasing new supplies from a vendor in a small settlement. The Guilmon running the vendor kept a friendly demeanor about him while John finished up the purchase. Among these supplies were food, bottled water, and a first-aid kit.
An electronic beeping akin to a digital alarm clock resounded from the blue digivice that the human John kept clasped top his belt. Curious, he grasped it to examine the screen. There in full display was what appeared to be a text message with the sprite of a Sunflowmon dancing next to it. John's eyes read over the words, now, intrigued by what it had to say.
"Everything alright, John?" asked Casimeir. There was sincerity in the Agumon's voice since he could spot the soft look of concern on his human partner's face.
John looked down to Casimeir. "I don't know," he admitted. "I got a message asking for help at the Tyrant's Labyrinth."
The Guilmon's ears perked at the mention of the Labyrinth. "Oh!" he chimed, "I know that place! We're right on the outskirts. If you head due West from here, you'll arrive in less than a few minutes!" The Guilmon paused, and his cheerfulness almost vanished. "I've seen that place recently. It used to be vibrant, but now...It's dying."
John and Casimeir looked at the Guilmon in disbelief. "Dying?" John asked.
Casimeir's expression turned to one of conviction. "We'd better get there as soon as possible, John," he stated.
With the supplies packed, the partners made it their goal to get to the Labyrinth's edge as soon as possible. And just as the Guilmon had instructed, the pair arrived at the brink of the Tyrant's Labyrinth in a matter of minutes. That was when John and Casimeir could see the sickly flora in plain view.
The partners could both feel an almost overwhelming concoction of sadness and dread now that they were close enough to fully take in the display of them. They were prepared to see a dying forest, but not one of this measure.
"This is terrible," Casimeir grimaced. "I heard stories that the Tyrant's Labyrinth was one of the most beautiful expanses of forest in the entire Digital World! What could have done this?"
John noted that they were not the first ones to arrive at the scene, as two Digimon were already gathered at the edge of the barren trees. He deduced that the Sunflowmon was the one who had initially sent out the distress call. Wanting to offer their help, the two partners approached.
"Hello there," said John, extending a friendly handshake to the Sunflowmon, then to Cion. "I'm John, and this is my partner, Casimeir."
Casimeir offered a sad smile to the pair. "It's nice to meet you both. We got your message, so we're here to help in any way that we can."

To be perfectly honest, there was little reason to ever traverse into this part of the Digital World. The Tyrant's Labyrinth, after all, was a wild and bitter part of the Eastern Timberlands. Between the feral and vicious Digimon who had never seen outside the dark forest's thickened thorns, the various amount of plants and thorns around which could bring even a healthy, strong Digimon to their knees with poison, and its absolutely remote location in the middle of an already dangerous forest, there were only three reasons to be here. You either were unlucky enough to have a spirit totem out here, you have a problem with the law and really needed to hide, or a series of unfortunate life choices got you lost way out here.
These were the thoughts rolling through Koneka's mind, as Ami considered a signal picked up on her Digivice, on the S.O.S. line. The Gatomon, flicking her eyes over the signal, gave a sigh. "Two-to-one says its a trap."
"Mm... I wouldn't be so sure. Fallen leaves, rotting branches, trees looking like they're in some demented winter? It should be easy enough to check on the way up, at least." Ami shrugged, looking over on her shoulder to Valeria. The bunny chuckled, giving a response: "And besides, what else are we doing? It can't hurt to check it out, at least!"
"Oi vey, you two are going to get me in trouble one day..." Shaking her head, the Gatomon begrudgingly followed along. And to her honest, slight surprise, as they approached the thick of the woods... well, yes, a lot looked off. Wasn't this supposed to be a thriving, wild wood? Why did it look more like a western wasteland?
"... Still think its a trap, kitty?"
"... Just keep your eyes open." It didn't take long for the three of them to reach the Sunflowmon's clearing, and to her surprise, there were already people here: a Sagitamon (some kind of squirrel-cat thing with a bow? Ami couldn't make heads or tails of that one), and another friendly-looking tamer with their partner, Agumon.
"Hey, I guess we're in, too. I'm Ami." At least with a group, it seemed safer! And here, the Gatomon relented, giving a small wave to the group. "Koneka." And the bunny chuckled. "Valeria. So, what exactly are we looking at?"
"... Judging by the spread-"
"Before you get into that, let the Sunflowmon explain it." Ami cut off the quizzical cat, earning a glare from the corner of the feline's eye. "Hmph, fine."

"Steady . . ."
The walk over to the Tyrant's Labyrinth wasn't too bad for Isaac, even within his all-too-aggressive NeoDevimon form. The bright lights and loud sounds that seemed to set the demon off were of little concern when walking through the woods. Instead, it only let out low growls whenever the chittering of insects became a bit too loud for its taste. Its head swiveled back and forth as it continued, Isaac gently goading his impulses back to focus on the road in front of him. Trying to forcefully reassert control was becoming less effective each time Isaac fell back on it, and Isaac wanted to take advantage of this peaceful moment to better work with his new spirit.
"There's a lot on your plate, isn't there? Are you scared?"
Antylamon had told him to try and improvise his best self. It hadn't been easy when he was in such a sorry state, but he had the luxury of working for improvement. A lot of others just didn't have that. He couldn't keep being Isaac, the lost soul trapped in a form that he couldn't understand. He had to go back to being Isaac, the kid who never gave up and always rose to the call when others need a hand. He may not have had his brother with him, but he could still do his damn best to make him proud. And maybe, just maybe, tackling the subject of corruption would shed some light on his current situation.
"That's okay. I'm scared too."
Decay in an already imposing place. The topic of corruption. Five people entering, with no guarantee on how many would leave. It was all so frustratingly familiar, wasn't it? NeoDevimon seemed to agree, letting out a slight whining buzz. Isaac was still somewhat frustrated at how insistently NeoDevimon reflected his emotional state. Joy, anger, sorrow, and, worry all spilled out through a variety of buzzing, groaning noises no matter how much he tried to fight it. When he thought of fighting, NeoDevimon slid into battle mode. When he thought of fleeing, NeoDevimon's wings were already primed to escape. Sometimes he didn't even need to have those thoughts before NeoDevimon was already on the ball, too soon and too intensely. In the future it could be helpful, provided he could work with it. As is, it was a headache.
"We're almost there. Come on, shape up."
In mind and body, Isaac nodded. He made his way over to the entrance of the Titan's Labyrinth, spotting where the rest of the group was assembled so far. With most of them, plus Sunflowmon, already there, it seemed like he'd be one of the last arrivals. Would it surprise them seeing a NeoDevimon approaching seemingly under its own accord, without a trainer? Some had innately guarded reactions towards Dark Area Digimon, especially ones more unnerving than cool. Nevertheless, even as he felt the urge to stay away from such a large, assembled group, Isaac moved forward.
As Isaac approached, he nodded in acknowledgement. "Isaac," he said, wishing his form had a less distorted-sounding voice. "I'm here to help."

Satoshi and Gabumon hadn't really wanted to go back to the forests, and especially not this far in, but the distress call seemed too serious to ignore. Even when the Tamer and Digimon had been united, the forest seemed like it had been withering away. Now, the area seemed even more devoid of life and vibrancy.
Satoshi approached the group and noticed his roommate immediately. "I didn't know you guys were going to be here!" he said, waving. It seemed he had been running into John more than he had seen him in their apartment!

The first digimon to arrive was an elegant looking beast digimon equipped with a pretty looking crystal bow. Sunflowmon smiled with delight as she approached. "Hello! I'm very glad you could make it" she answered. "Cion is it?" she asked, thinking back to the message of confirmation she had received.
The next to arrive was a human with an Agumon partner. Sunflowmon saw that there would be a diverse group here already of both independent and partner digimon. She hoped they would be able to get along and work together. "Hello, John, Casameir" she said. And another human partner duo arrived. "Good day, Ami, Koneko" she added.
The next to arrive was a digimon that somewhat startled Sunflowmon, but she controlled herself. A NeoDevimon. But she didn't feel too threatened by this. Especially in that he didn't appear hostile. And apparently his name was Isaac, which didn't seem like a very imposing name. "Hello" she said to him.
And the last two to arrive were another human with a Gabumon. He seemed to know John, which was good. "Greetings" Sunflowmon said.
So, it seemed the party was assembled. Sunflowmon floated in place, standing in front of the entrance to the twisted, dying forest.
"As you're probably aware, there seems to be... some kind of pestilence that's ailing this forest" she said. "The trees are dying, and worst of all, the disease seems to be spreading..."
If one looked closely into the labyrinth, there seemed to be a kind of thin black mist rising from the roots of the trees. Few of them had leaves, and those that remained were brown, very little green was to be seen.
"Most of the digimon that resided in these woods have evacuated to the rest of the timberlands" Sunflowmon continued. "However, with the rate this disease is spreading, I fear the whole forest could be dead within a few months".
The gravity of the situation stated, Sunflowmon then proceeded to what they could do about this.
"I've attempted to venture into the labyrinth to try and find the source of this, but, there were powerful digimon inside that attacked me. I didn't know what they were, but... I can't go in alone. That's why I called for your assistance. I'm not very good at fighting, and I'm afraid I'm not strong enough to be of much help here. However, myself and my friends have pooled enough money to pay you for your troubles".
She then would go over the conditions.
"If you manage to see the source of this... corruption, and can give me some information about it, I will pay you 2,500 bits each" she said. "But if you manage to remove the source of the corruption and allow the forest to heal, I will pay you 12,000 bits each".
She hoped this sounded like an acceptable deal to them.

Her first partners to arrive, a male human named John and his digi-partner Casimeir the Agumon, we a delightful additon to the team in her opinion. With a warm smile, she took the hand of the human boy and shook it gently, giving both of them a brief bow. "I'm Cion. Pleased to meet you, both of you." She replied with utmost sincerity in her voice. She always appreciated good manners. However, she noted that the Agumon appeared to be dismayed about the dying forest, causing the Sagitamon to give him a confident thumps up. "Don't worry, we'll fix this. Promise!"
Three more, gorgeous beings appeared on the scene, all of them female and one of them human. A digi-destined who supported two digimons at the same time; a rare sight indeed. But the more support they had the better, and they looked very strong even if they hid their power. Another digimon appeared, a NeoDevimon out of all creatures. Despite its reputation though, Isaac appeared to be supportive, even if he was a digimon of few words. And while another male human and a Gabumon quietly joined their team, Cion simply nodded to everyone and stood firmly and confidently. "Cion. Nice to meet you all."
Briefly nodding to Sunflowmon with a warm smile, they saved fruther introductions for later. So it seemed the party was assembled, and now they had to organize themselves and forge a plan to approach whatever bane was haunting this poor forest. It was not only decay, but also a strange, black mist that shrouded everything in vile penumbra. The Sagitamon had no idea how something like this could have occurred naturally, which was why she believed it was the work of a fiendish entity.
Thankfully, as many civilians as possible had been evacuated, leaving them more leeway in case a battle of epic proportions broke out. Considering it was the digital world, that was most likely the case. "That is why we are here." Cion spoke in between sentences of Sunflowmon, reminding everyone that it was their priority to heal the forest. Still, it seemed they had to face powerful digimons, likely tainted by the black mist, first, likely acting as guardians of the plague. Another mind-control trick perhaps, or where they spawns of the mist that merely defended 'their territory'.
"I hope your generous bounty does not lead you to be in financial distress." Cion spoke, concerned about the Sunflowmon's altruism. That was a lot of money she was throwing around, even if the difficult task ahead was a hazardous one. "Because, and I am sure I speak for everybody here, I want the plague to be gone." She assured the Sunflowmon that she was going with utmost passion and focus at their task. She hated seeing such unnecessary ruin, and as someone who wished to see the digital world bloom and propsers, and as someone who often worked towards that very goal, she would not simply allow the plague to persist if she could do something about it.

John's partner smiled warmly due to Cion's promising reassurance. "You're right. We can fix this. By the time we're done, the Labyrinth will look as good as new."
Both Casimeir and John made an effort to greet the remaining individuals as each of them arrived. Once the NeoDevimon arrived, the pair did not react as people normally would to such an intimidating Digimon. After all, they never judged a person or Digimon purely by their appearance. If anything, John and his partner were pleased to have the opportunity to meet so many unique Digimon in one sitting. The two were especially pleased to have run into their good friends again.
"Hey there," John addressed to Satoshi and Gabumon. "Yeah, we got the distress call, too. AT this point we should probably travel together from now on, huh?"
The partnered human and his Digimon listened carefully to Sunflowmon now that she began to explain the situation at hand. According to her words, some unknown entity was behind the death and decay of the once-beautiful Tyrant's Labyrinth. John couldn't help but associate the predicament with a section of one of his favorite video games from his childhood. The task appeared simple enough; Enter the Labyrinth, and locate the cause of the forest's blight. When the reward was mentioned, John and Casimeir didn't necessarily care for the money. Helping Digimon was more than enough of a reward.
"You can count on us for help, Sunflowmon," John avowed. "And Cion's right. The sooner we get rid of this plague and whatever is causing it, the better."

And so arrive the rest of their crew: a tall and lanky demon type who seemed a little less than thrilled to be here, and one more tamer pair of a twenty-something man and his partner Gabumon. In regards to the former, Valeria looked over and gave an awkward, nervous chuckle. "Eheh... hi, there..." Was that fear in her voice? Actually, it didn't seem like it: Ami already gave a slight bow to Satoshi ("Don't worry, the signal was kinda hard to miss!"), Koneka giving an idle wave to the Gabumon. No, there was something else about that one.
But it was hardly the time to be worried about social anxiety, there was a forest to save! As the Sunflowmon spoke up, Ami paid attention and Koneka's ears twitched to pick up on every word, leaving Valeria on her shoulder to give a second look at everyone else in the crowd. This was about as much as Koneka expected: 'something' was corrupting this forest, and it was their job to figure out what. And though she hoped for a bit more information other than 'it was spreading' and 'there was a dangerous beast out in the forest', this seemed doable enough, especially with such a large crowd!
"Well, I'm on board... Koneka?" Ami gave a question, at least suggesting the two weren't as close as Ami was with Valeria. And Koneka gave a sigh. "Honestly, this needs sorted one way or another... besides, this group seems pretty well-rounded to cover each-other."
"In other words, we can crack some heads and figure out what's going on!" Valeria nodded!
"So, I guess the first thing is dealing with that attacker, right?" Ami spoke to the group, as a whole. "There's no point splitting up - if what the Sunflowmon said is right, that thing'll probably be defending the source of the corruption. If we group up, it'll probably act shrewd and try to edge into a weak point."
"Mm... Cion, was it?" Koneka addressed the Sagitamon. "Would you mind being spotter? You know, instead of trying to find the corruption, just focus on threats, let us know when we need to focus on fighting-"
"And fire a few pot-shots at whatever that creature Sunflowmon is scared of, while you're at it!"
"Y-yes, thank you, Val." Koneka sighed, as Ami chuckled, scritching the Usagimon's ear. Yes, this was going to be an interesting group!

Isaac let out a brief, bitter chuckle as Valeria stammered in his general direction. At least somebody seemed to acknowledge the giant, lanky elephant in the room. "Don't worry, I know I'm ugly," he said, the grinding sound of his laugh slowly dying down. Seriously, did this thing have a can opener for a throat? Why did all of its vocalizations sound so mechanical?
Isaac sat down to listen, hoping that a reclined state would make his NeoDevimon body a little bit less tense. Sure enough, the demon's flared-out wings started to ease a little, folding neatly against the fold of his back. Maybe he wouldn't be fighting NeoDevimon the whole way through this mission after all.
It wasn't perfect. The more Sunflowmon described the mission, the more it hit close to home for Isaac. An already dark place of the Digital World experiencing further decay? A strange miasma being guarded by a powerful Digimon? An initial goal to survey first, cleanse if possible? This was all feeling too familiar, and Isaac's anxieties were quickly becoming NeoDevimon's outbursts. A creaking, groaning sound echoed across the clearing as NeoDevimon continued listening to this story, some lightning starting to crackle between the webs of his fingers during the most egregious similarities.
Isaac bit down and grit his teeth hard, forcing NeoDevimon to stop tensing. "We'll have our chance to make things right," he whispered under his breath, letting out a sigh of relief as he started steering his own body again.
"Consider it as good as purged," Isaac finally said, rising to his feet. "I've dealt with corruption before. Very, very personally. I'm not going to let others suffer from it either." Now there was the heroic boy that had been laying too low for too long!
Ami already seemed to be coming up with battle strategy. Smart. "She's right. Trust me, you don't want to split," he said. "Corruption has a way of picking off the stragglers. We should always be watching each other's backs, just in case of the worst.
Heard you can solve almost every maze by keeping a hand on the right wall. Anyone up for testing that, or are we gonna look for the most direct route instead?"

Satoshi had spaced off for a bit, so Gabumon gave him a quick tap on the leg to bring him back to attention.
"Oh!" he yelped. "My bad, I spaced off there for a second. I'm Satoshi Himura. We'll help in any way we can!" Hopefully that was sufficient. Satoshi wasn't really good in crowds of people he didn't know, so he and Gabumon stuck next to John and Casimeir.

Sunflowmon smiled and shook her head when Cion gave concern that the reward would put them under financial stress. "Honestly? We feel the price is worth it. We really do need to get this right, and I'm sure that if you manage to remove the corruption, we will be able to return to our lives and make everything alright again. So don't you worry about us".
Cion seemed like such a sweet digimon. Sunflowmon was rather delighted to have such a good hearted individual come to join this expedition. She had been worried that braggish bandits would answer the call instead, but the Sagittamon was an individual of grace and nicety.
And the humans seemed to be quite nice too. She smiled at John. "Indeed, I'm glad you agree" she said.
Then Ami raised a good point. Sunflowmon agreed. "Yes... splitting up may not be a very good idea. Even if the forest appears dead, the corruption may change the path and force you to be separated. Of course, you can split up if that's your tactic, but be careful if you do so, you might not be able to get back together if you want to".
As time went on, Sunflowmon decided that the NeoDevimon was a good digimon too. There was no evidence of malice or true intention to do evil, like that which she experienced in her short excursion into the corrupted labyrinth. And she quickly settled down as well, good digimon could come in all types and attributes.
"So then, if you're ready to enter, I wish you the best of luck" Sunflowmon said, hoping that the group could make it to the source of the corruption and defeat it. "I'll be waiting here for you".
And so, if the group enter the labyrinth, they would immediately come across a path lined by twisted wood and thorny branches. The path was virtually constant in width, about four metres from side to side. Above, the branches and thorns twisted with each other to form a canopy that could not be breached through flight. It seemed that it truly was a labyrinth that would have to be navigated on foot.

Appreciating John's and Casimeir's support, she simply smiled warmly at the two, letting them know she was thankful for their kindness. Ami's idea to not split up was of course a given, but Koneka's suggestion of the Sagitamon being a spotter surprised her. Thinking about it for a couple of seconds, she eventually nodded, though with a bit of hesitation.
"I keep all of my senses open. Promise." She vowed, hoping to be of use that way in the presence of such amazingly powerful auras. In comparison to some others, she was still a small fry, so any way she could help through utility was just fine for her. Besides, as a vulpine digimon, her senses were so or so formidable, so anything that would try to ambush them would first have to get past her. And of course she would always keep her bow ready in case she needed to crowd-control something.
As Sunflowmon explained herself, Cion eventually let out a sigh and smiled at her, accepting that she would receive a reward no matter what. "As you insist." She replied with a slightly teasing tone, still believing the bounty was way too high. But if it was something she could afford then she would not say no, much less ruin it for everyone else. Still, their priorities and hearts were straight with their number one concern being the corruption itself, not money. They would try to vanquish it with all their effort, and failure was only the absolute last straw.
With everything said and finished, Cion would enter the labyrinth alongside her digimon and human allies. She would be one of the last, safeguarding their backs and utilizing all her senses to make sure they would not be surprised. With her bow constantly drawn, she often found herself walking backwards just to make sure she would not miss a beat. Hopefully, the much more powerful digimons in their group did not mind being at the front to protect her. "Everything alright thus far?"

Casimeir and his human partner grinned at Isaac's suggestion. There was no guarantee that the immediate threat was at the core of the maze, after all. "Those great ideas, Isaac!" John chimed. "Splitting up would be the worse thing to do. We have no idea how dangerous this maze will be, and getting separated could spell our downfall."
The Agumon wondered if there was a more immediate solution that he could help find. "I learned from a nature show once that forest areas continue their lifespan with the help of fire. Maybe that's the best way to sterilize the Labyrinth. Should I Digivolve into Greymon?"
John considered Casimeir's words. "Well, maybe that's the way it works in the human world. But this is the Digital world. I don't think the same rules apply." he looked to Sunflowmon with concern taking hold into his expression. "Besides, while it's a more direct approach, we have to consider all of the Digimon that call this place home. They could end up perishing in the fire."
OOC Notes:
Sorry for the short post, been trying to get my muse back.
