Corrupted Wood (N-Rank) (5/5)

Isaac took a few breaths, the intense feeling of having taken a life slowly, naturally starting to ebb away. What was done was done. Whatever happened to those Digimon, they wouldn't be coming back. Somehow, Isaac had the sick feeling that whether he was the one to deal the death blow or not they were already goners. More disconcerting was that nobody else seemed to have the same reaction, but maybe they had already come to the conclusion that he was forcing himself to come to grips with as well. For the victims of this maze's corruption, there really was no coming back, was there?
Koneka seemed to disagree, judging by her handling of the flower. Was cutting that seriously a good idea? The second Isaac heard her plan, NeoDevimon immediately reeled back away from the source of the corruption. On a scale of No to Hell No, this was getting into the vicious expletives category of coursing. Nevertheless, he knew two freakouts in one day would be quite the bad first impression, so he bit his tongue and forced his rather jumpy spirit to settle down before doing anything rash. Not interfering directly didn't mean that he wouldn't have a reaction to all of this, though. "I've gotten close to enough corruption in my lifetime," he said. In this case, "my lifetime" had been "a few Digital World months since messing with the D-Reaper." Reaper: not even once. "If it starts doing anything suspect, we're destroying it. Not letting it into our heads."" Still, scientific curiosity came first, then burning the flower to the ground in a furious rage. He remained close by as Valeria made the cutting, as if ready to swoop in and slice her free in case it tried pulling anything.
"What's next after this?" he asked, looking deeper into the yawning darkness of the labyrinth. "Last plan worked well. Almost too well. Do you think they'll be prepared for us, or should we keep it going and not rock the boat?"

Satoshi thought for a moment, really taking everything in. He hadn't been very focused up until this point, so he would need a moment to really clear his head. "Sorry that I've been kind of all over the place, guys," he apologized. "I'm ready to keep going, now."
Garurumon, meanwhile, was itching to get moving. "Let's go! I'm itching to get this done!" Though it seemed like he wanted to keep fighting, Garurumon was more concerned with getting out of this creepy forest as soon as possible. He had gotten lost in a part of this forest upon hatching a while ago.

As Valeria approached the flower, it gave no reaction, merely continuing to emit the strange glittering data. As time went on, this data began to intensify, as though it would emit something of an effect if untended. However, any cuttings she would procure would simply turn black and fall like ash toward the dark mist that covered the forest floor.
Then, Casameir aimed a Nova Flame attack at the flower. At once, the blossom burst into flames, quickly turning black from the attack. But as it did so, with the last moments of its existence, it slowly pointed toward Casameir and let forth a short wave of red homing energy. When it hit, it would make the user that attacked it feel something of a moment of dizziness that would prevent them using the same attack again for a few moments. No lasting damage would occur, however.
On the whole, it seemed like whatever entity was aware of them, flowers like this may occur regularly from now on as long as they continued further into the labyrinth.
- Red flowers must be destroyed with a named attack on the turn that they appear. Upon doing so, the cooldown of that attack used to destroy them increases by 1 turn. This is an automatic effect and cannot be prevented. - Otherwise, the flowers will emit a pulse of red data that affects ALL of the group that will increase the cooldown of their last used attack by 1.
[As such, Casameir's Nova Blast now has a cooldown of 1 for this round. It will return to its normal cooldown level in the next round of posting].

"Fair enough." Cion responded to Koneka, the thought of collecting samples having not even crossed her mind. She would not allow herself to be put in the danger of being corrupted, but if another was to volunteer to do the act of gathering samples before they'd destroy the flower then she was fine with that. The remaining banter was of no importance to her or the situation at hand, not to mention Satoshi's and his partner's common absent-mindedness. As long as they would pull through this endeavor together and vanquish the corruption, the how was not that important.
Unfortunately, Valeria's attempt to take samples from the flower was in vain, or at least it seemed that way. They immediately vitiated into ash, making the Arnamon wonder if that was still usable for scientific experiments. But the risk of diving straight into the black haze beneath them was probably too high anyway, hence it likely had been a vain effort. Still, they had tried before Casimeir burned it to a grisp, and it was the thought that counted. If it had been that, everything would have been fine and dandy, but unfortunately it was had not been.
In it's dying breath, the flower unleashed a ranged attack on his fellow dinosaur digimon, Cion was not quick enough to prevent that, but when it struck the Graymon, it did not seem hurt. A bit dizzy, but not damaged. "Are you okay, Casimeir? Do you need healing?" The vulpine digimon wondered, gently caressing the exoskeleton of his friend's muzzle on which she sat. Hopefully, the attack had no inherent poision that would eventually harm them at a later point in time.
Whatever would be the case, she was fine with simply moving on if the others wished to do so.

The Greymon felt a slight bout of pride with his handiwork while the flower was set aflame. It would only be for a moment, though, due to the unexpected reaction from the burning botany. The red energy blasted Casimeir head-on to John's dismay. The big Digimon expected the flower's attack to hurt, but the pain never came. If anything, Casimeir was put under a minor dizzy spell.
"Cas, are you alright?" he might have been repeating Cion's concerns, but that didn't deter him from looking out for his partner's well-being. It took a moment for the Greymon to respond while the effects of the energy wave abated from his mind. Casimeir blinked a few times and did his best to suppress the urge to shake his head.
Weirdly enough, the beam didn't appear to do anything in the physical sense. "Yeah," he responded to the group's concerns. "I'm fine, as far as I can tell. At least now we know that these flowers have some sort of defense mechanism. It looks harmless, but it did stun me a fair amount."
This put John's mind at ease. "Well, that's good. We're just gonna have to tread lightly around those flowers, and anything else in this labyrinth." The human turned his gaze toward Isaac so that he could prepare a response to his query. "We seemed to handle the last group well enough. We're making some good progress, after all."

Well, Isaac's reaction was a bit sharp, wasn't it? Barely managing to climb atop the NeoDevimon's back - by the champion's reaction, maybe it was a mistake for her to do so - Koneka's ear twitched as Isaac expressed his caution. And Koneka was very careful in picking words for her reply - it was more than evident that there was a story behind his reaction!
"Alright, understood. Valeria's still our best option to try and get anything out of this. And heck, if we can figure out what's causing the-"
"... Tch. No go!" The golem's metallic voice rang out, black ash simply slipping through her metallic fingers. It was definitely bizarre, but it left Valeria with a few hints, at least: "It's either a bigger Digimon's attack, like some kind of mine, or - more likely - its a weed that spreads by root. Still, to think it would react like that..."
"You did what you could. Now, stand back!" Casimeir wouldnt be left to wait for long, and that flower would soon be engulfed in that monstrous fireball! But, somehow, out of the smoke came out some sort of ghastly, crimson vapor, wavering right towards the offending Greymon. Koneka bit her lip... was it some kind of defense mechanism? A spectral poison?
As the dinosaur described it, well, it wasn't much of anything. Ami, standing closest, took a small breath of relief. "Well, let us know if it starts to get to you. We know barely anything about the vapor as it is."
At this point, it was just a matter of how to proceed! "Though the flowers have to be here for some reason... maybe we just need to take them all out?"
"Maybe. Still, not going to do anything around here... let's try and get closer to the center of the forest."

Isaac looked visibly relieved when he saw that the flower wasn't doing anything shady upon being touched. "Good," he said, a sigh and a roll of the shoulders helping let out some of his pent-up stress. "A shame your plan didn't work. But . . . at least you aren't hurt." If NeoDevimon was capable of smiling behind the mask, Isaac would have tried to reassure Koneka with one. Then again, any smile that NeoDevimon was capable of making would've probably been kind of horrifying, so maybe that was for the better. "Whatever it is, at least we know we can approach it. That gives us far more options to-"
Flower lasers? Seriously? NeoDevimon's head practically snapped in the direction of the laser, trailing it as it went from the flower to Casimeir. Immediately he glided up to the Greymon, hovering around him as he began examining. No sear marks, even where the laser impacted. No red venation. From what Casimeir had to say, no headache or lingering ill effect beyond being dazed a little, either. After making three rotations to check for injuries, Isaac let out a sigh of relief and touched back down on the floor. "You're okay," he pointed out, knowing full well that what was visible on the outside and what was visible on the inside were completely different.
He thought it was just a headache when the D-Reaper had infested him.
"Let me know if you feel off after this," Isaac offered, thinking back to Whitewater City. "I know a guy. Worst case scenario, there are ways of working past corruption." In Isaac's case, this was much more like living with corruption. While he was in the process of striving towards a cure, actually getting to that point was far, far more difficult than he had ever imagined. That was okay, though. There was still a light at the end of the tunnel, and that was more than Isaac could have possibly hoped for.
It was time to make sure that nobody else had to deal with that.

While he was in the middle of getting his bearings, Satoshi looked on horrified as a mysterious flower shot a strange energy at Casimeir. However, it seemed that nothing happened to the Greymon, so he quickly breathed a sigh of relief. "That was shocking!" he mused.
"You alright, bro?" Garurumon asked. "That flower looked awfully tough!" The sarcasm dripping in his tone was a little bit uncalled for, and Satoshi gave him a quick smack on the head.
"Ignore him," Satoshi told everyone else. "He's still...immature." As he said this, he was attempting to figure out what had caused the appearance of the flower. Was someone watching them at this very moment? Was the corruption creating these? More questions presented themselves than answers at this point.
"This feels like a game I was playing recently," he muttered to himself. "I'll have to keep a lookout for any other strangely colored flowers."

As the group continued through the labyrinth, the haze of black data below them seemed to grow a little bit higher. While it still had no effect on them, it was clear that they were likely walking in the correct direction.
However, soon as they reached another point, they would see another flower blossom ahead. This one was yellow, and like the red one, it seemed to be exhaling a strange golden mist of data into the path ahead. However eerie it felt, it would be evident on the adventurers that the effect of yellow flowers would be different to that of red flowers.
If one were to sniff it up close, they would feel something of a physical malaise that may make their gait somewhat inhibited. But that was only if they got close to it.
Regardless, while no digimon ahead could be seen or heard up ahead in the twisting labyrinth, it would soon be obvious that they were near to their goal.
A yellow flower appears.

Letting out a sigh of relief as the Sagitamon sat on Casimeir's muzzle, she was simply glad to know that her companion had apparently not been severely injured. Still, according to his words, the flowers were toxic enough to cause a brief stun, which could be fatal if it occured during combat. Looking down to Casimeir's human partner, she nodded approvingly, believing he got if figured out. "Aye. Steady yet careful. Who knows what other traps might linger." She stated, hoping more for direct confrontations than having to sneak around contraptions. After all, she excelled in supporting a group of allies.
With more or less insightful comments by others, Koneka eventually suggested to move on towards the center of the forest / labyrinth. With no other lead, it was probably the only good choice to make, as villains or cancers had a tendency to be at the center of everything, be it attention or locations. It seemed everyone else accepted that as well, which was why they calmly and quietly moved along. Naturally, Cion did not have to move her legs, as she had it quite comfortable on the exoskeleton of Casimeir. And as long as he would not express ire about her sitting on him, it'd likely stay that way.
Thankfully, the height difference protected her from the black, misty corruption beneath them. Having big companions clearly had its advantages, even if they made for easy to hit targets. But before another conflict occured, there was another flower, though it had a different color. This time, it was yellow. "Oh no... not again." She expressed her composed frustration, her hopes of few traps apparently having been crushed.
Naturally, she would deal with it, but still was curious about what the others thought. "Ignore or burn?" She asked somewhat casually, letting the others decide what the best course of action would be.

Casimeir ensured to let the others know that he was okay when they expressed their concerns after the energy hit him from the flower that was now a pile of ash. "I'm okay, everyone. Thanks. I'll make sure to let you know if anything happens."
The soupy mist of black data was now up to Casimeir's stomach. John was thankful to be up here above the data, and thus far, it didn't look like any of it could reach anyone else just yet. He and his partner hoped it would remain that way. But as the group trudged ahead through the winding maze, the human spotted hints of gold strands among the black data. Strangely, the display had its own beauty to it. It wouldn't be long before they happened across its source.
Yet another giant flower perched upon the natural, sickly maze wall. The others, like Cion, were likely to display their concerns about the flower. John could see well enough from his vantage point atop his friend's shoulder blades. Casimeir would be the one to answer Cion's question. "I could burn this one like last time," he mused. "Though it's a different color, which means it will have a different status effect on me. Unless anyone else wants to take a crack at it?"

Well, thankfully, the red flower didn't seem to have any immediate effects. Isaac seemed the most concerned and cautious about it, but honestly, they couldn't get through this without making some kind of risk. Heck, if it did that when it died, who knew what the flower was capable of when they kept it up!
For a while, though, the group kept their formation as they made their way deeper into the forest. It was hard to tell, but with the dark mist slowly rising, one could guess that they were nearing the source of this black mist. Unfortunately, this thought coincided with the appearance of another flower: this one, yellow!
"Another one of these..." Koneka sighed, keeping her perch on top of the NeoDevimon. Cion was quick to ask the question, Casimeir answering that it might do something different. Did it always focus on the attacker? "Mm... for now, we can't risk the same person burning two different colors. The auras might react with each-other. Valeria?"
"Sure, I'll take yellow." The golem stepped forth, much less cautiously this time. This was also a test to see if the golem had any natural immunity to the poisons provided: Valeria raised her palm, her callout ringing through her metallic body:
Explosive Force! There would be no fiery display, but instead, energy would be thrust from her palm, enough to flatten and shred that flower against the forest floor, ripping it right against the root! Koneka looked on with careful anticipation, as Ami hung back nearer to the Greymon!

Another flower. How troublesome. Thankfully, considering he had already seen that one of these flowers wasn't the end of the world, Isaac didn't feel the burning need to panic over it like the last flower. At this point, the group seemed to have a fairly standard procedure in mind. Find flower. Destroy flower. The different colors may have meant something, but what they meant just wasn't clear yet. For now, so long as nobody got overly infested, everything would be okay. They'd find out what was going on, adapt to any twists in their current plan, and then they'd move on.
That didn't stop Isaac from being somewhat on the defensive, though. When the flower was destroyed NeoDevimon flared his wings out, less in a show of defensiveness and more in an attempt at sheltering Koneka. Just in case something went grievously wrong with the plan, he'd at least want her to be protected behind his wings. Worst case scenario, he'd bear the brunt of any particular backlash.
The silence was starting to get eerie, though. "Been alone far too long," Isaac muttered under his breath, as if afraid that him bringing it up would end up jinxing the group. "That rubbing you guys the wrong way too? Makes me wonder if they're waiting back for us." An ambush coming for them would be awful. Not only would a second flower have potentially disoriented the group, but the Digimon from before would have already potentially sent warning of the power that they had on an alpha strike. Would their cohesion hold up nearly as well on an extended fight, or would the slight breaks in unity that already emerged mean they'd be in for a bad time?

Satoshi checked his surroundings carefully as Garurumon carried him along. The large wolf wasn't really watching where he was going, so Satoshi had to give him a nudge with his foot as he approached the yellow flower.
"Watch out," he reccomended. "That flower looks kinda sketchy." It was giving off some sort of strange odor, which was a surefire sign of bad things to come. One of the others decided to use a move that seemed to destroy it, but Satoshi wasn't sure.
"You need to relax, Toshi," Garurumon chided. "They're just flowers." The Champion-level wolf Digimon seemed confident on the surface, but he was starting to get a bad feeling about the forest. Things were too quiet, and this black mist was starting to get in the way of his line of sight.
The NeoDevimon raised his suspicion of the lack of an enemy presence here. Satoshi had to agree. "It's true," he admitted. "There's got to be something waiting for us further in. There's no way the way to fix this corruption is just a mildly-spooky stroll through the forest. I can't agree more with the notion of caution." He spoke without really thinking about it, because his thoughts were racing with the same questions about the flowers. Were they truly just due to the corruption? It was entirely possible they were the work of some sort of Digimon.

Now that they were closer to the source, it could be evident that there was something... more to these flowers. However faint it was, it seemed that they were the effect of something located deeper within the labyrinth, as a small, faint pulse of data had rolled down the path before it had appeared.
Once again, the flower was destroyed. As before, a small, homing pulse of yellow data emanated from the flower, heading straight toward Valeria. If it hit, it would temporarily freeze her to the spot, any data involved in movement would be unresponsive. This effect would only be active for a short while. However, unlike the data of the red flower, it wasn't as sure to hit this time.
- Yellow flowers must be destroyed via a named attack on the turn that they appear. Upon doing so, the one that attacked them will be unable to move from the spot for 1 turn. Effect is unavoidable, but blockable using another attack (barriers that block up to Perfect level attacks can work too).
- Otherwise, the flowers will emit a pulse of yellow data that affects ALL of the group and prevents movement for 1 turn. They may still use ranged attacks.
