Training Day [Sophie/Invite]

Satoshi and Gabumon had been contacted by Sophie and Lantis earlier. They requested to meet up at a certain point in the Eastern Timberlands for a classified reason. After a quick Trailmon trip and a bit of a hike, the two of them reached a cliffside at the edge of the forest that overlooked a great mountain range. It was pretty picturesque of a location.
"Wonder what she wanted," Satoshi muttered to himself as the two of them looked out at the gorgeous view in front of them.
"I bet it's some super awesome AEGIS mission!" Gabumon said eagerly. "We're finally gonna get some action!"
Satoshi sighed and sat down, still not sure how to handle his Digimon's apparent bloodlust and need to fight.

In the past period of time that Sophie had formally began the protective agency known as AEGIS, she had learned much of the role of digimon. Particularly the partner kind. From her studies so far, they seemed to be linked to their partner by a conduit known as the digivice. How it formed? She didn't know. But the longer a digimon spent with their human partner, the stronger they became.
And how a digimon could become even more stronger? Well, that usually involved training in the art of combat. While Sophie wasn't a particularly violent individual and didn't approve of needless combat, she did have a vision that the digimon of AEGIS would be the best trained in their field.
But that led to an even bigger dillemma. How would she as a human know the full extent of digimon combat? It was one night in her bedroom when she was beginning to panic about this sort of thing when Lantis patted her shoulder firmly and gave some advice.
"Sophie, the principle behind our relationship is that we work as a team. Part human, part digimon" he said. "You handle the human stuff, I'll handle the digimon stuff, okay?"
Sophie didn't know what he was talking about at first, but, upon their return to the digital world the next day, she realized what he meant. Lantis could detect that both John and Satoshi, the other AEGIS members were close to evolving their partners to the next level. In fact Lantis theorized that John had already achieved this. So if they were to advance as a team, it was in her interest to help Satoshi achieve the same thing.
"Alright, I get you now" Sophie said, sending a communication to Satoshi through her D-Terminal to have him and Gabumon meet them in the digital world. They would meet soon in the Timberlands. And there they would conduct their training.
As they finally approached, Sophie was pleased to see Satoshi and Gabumon already there. "Heya" she said, waving to them. Lantis was at her side in his Leomon form, also waving.
"So, how's things going with you two?" Sophie asked them, deciding to get the small talk out of the way first to make sure that this was seen as a non-threatening setting. She didn't want them to be too nervous after all.

Satoshi smiled as Sophie and Lantis approached. "Hey, boss!" he said back respectfully. "Things are great. Gabumon's been able to stay in his Rookie form permanently now!"
Gabumon punched Satoshi's leg. "Watch it!" he spat. "I'll have you know that it was no problem at all for me to reach Rookie level in the first place, and I could've gone farther if I wanted!"
"Sure, buddy," Satoshi smirked. He turned back to Sophie. "Anyway, I'm assuming there's a reason you called us here?"

Sophie couldn't help but give a little smile as Gabumon stated that he could go further than rookie. Then Satoshi asked why she had called them there.
"Well, Gabumon's pretty much said the point" she said. "In this early stage of AEGIS's development, I feel like it's my duty to personally get to see how my lieutenants perform in combat. This will be important in future when we begin our real missions, and I want to be in a position to fully understand you and John's abilities, and at the same time, for you to understand the abilities of my partner".
The setting was good, although she made a mental note to stop them getting too close to the cliffside. She didn't want any fatal falls after all.
"So in short, the purpose of this is meeting is for your digimon and my digimon to have a friendly spar" she said. "Lantis and Gabumon will perform to the best of their abilities, and all four of us will learn from what we see. I don't want to see who is dominant or anything like that, I want to see how we can respond to each other's capabilities".
With that, Lantis strode onto the flat open field, giving a smile to Gabumon.
"So then, might want to come clean on your claim to evolve to champion then, mate" the Leomon said. Of course he wouldn't lay a finger on him while he was still a Rookie. But he could tell that somehow that Gabumon had the capability he had asked for.

Satoshi sighed. Gabumon had dug himself into a hole with Lantis, and he was about to get a bit of a reality check. "Sounds like a plan," he said, smirking.
Gabumon's bravado, of course, would prove to be even more of a hindrance than usual. "No need! I can take you on myself! Blue Blaster!" Immediately, Gabumon shot a stream of blue flame at Lantis, starting the fight.

Meanwhile, in between the mountains in the distance, a stand-off of epic proportions was about to begin. Marshal North and his partner, Coronamon, had invited Colin James and his twin partners, Luke and Bellamy, out for a spot of sparring. The locale seemed fitting for a battle between Tamers of their skill levels, since there didn't seem to be any Digimon nearby.
"This'll be exciting!" Marshal said as the pair waited for their opponents to show up. "We've never really gotten to spar with Colin and the twins yet!"
"It's probably not a good idea to have a fight with two Super Mega level Digimon like this unless it's totally necessary, right?" Coronamon wondered. "It's going to be extremely dangerous."

Lantis had predicted that Gabumon would strike right away. At once, with a shout of "Juoken!" he sent a flaming lion's head at the attack, but not Gabumon himself. After all, using a Champion level attack on a Rookie would be pretty unfair. He simply used this to cancel out Gabumon's attack and little more, the beast head sailing into the forest, dissipating.
"Hmm, good initiative, but he could have at least waited until we were ready to begin" Sophie remarked. Oh well. She looked interested to see what would happen.
"Alright, that's one attack, let's see what else you've got!" Lantis said, drawing his blade, ready for combat.
Colin James and his twin partners Luke and Bellamy were a little surprised to hear that Marshal and Coronamon wanted to spar with them. That was fine though. Since the Battle of Whitewater, Colin agreed that they needed to learn how to use their Super Mega forms.
Bellamy was, as usual, flirting and messing around with Coronamon as they made their way to the training field. Colin and Luke let them, just as long as they'd take it seriously when the time came.
Of course, they needed to be careful about it. Colin remembered the warnings he received from Ryouta and Yuuki about biomerging too long. Indeed, Koharu had also learned lessons about it.
"Alrighty" Colin said, his twin partners at his side. Luke dressed in his normal blue scarf and leather armor, displaying the Crest of Compassion on his right shoulder. Bellamy was dressed similarly, only with the Crest of Tenacity on his left shoulder. "We'll test out our forms for 5 minutes, just using basic attacks, no special attacks for a little while, okay? We don't want to hurt anyone that might be around".
Daedalus's sensors hadn't detected much others present, but a fully charged Ultima Protos could very well wipe out a large area of the forest.
"When you're ready..." Colin said, drawing the card through his D-Arc. "Digimodify! Biomerge activate!"
At once, the three individuals turned to light and merged into one form - that of BlackJupitermon. The skies darkened a little as the Super Mega landed on the forest floor, waiting for Marshal and Coronamon to do the same.

Satoshi was a little nervous at first, seeing Lantis shoot an attack at Gabumon. Luckily, the Leomon seemed to be holding back. However, this also just gave Gabumon an opportunity to inflate his ego further. Satoshi turned to Sophie, the concern on his face ever apparent. "Hey, is there something I can do here?" he asked. "I don't want Gabumon to get hurt, but we've never attempted to Digivolve past Rookie before." That was exactly what happened as the attack flew over the Rookie's head and into the forest nearby. "Hah!" Gabumon scoffed, merely feeling the wind from the force instead of the attack itself. "You missed!" Without even skipping a beat, Gabumon ran straight at Lantis, pointing his horn straight at his opponent.
Marshal smiled as Colin and the twins finally showed up. "Glad you guys could make it!" Seeing that they weren't wasting time, the Tamer and his partner fist-bumped, activating their transformation. "Coronamon Biomerge to...Apollomon!"The skies grew dark as BlackJupitermon emerged, but a bright light cut through the stormy clouds as the fiery God Man made his entrance. This was going to be a fight to remember!

As the first rounds were exchanged, Sophie glanced at Satoshi, who seemed to be unsure what to do here. At once, the younger girl felt a little nervous. This was probably her first real test as a leader. Here was someone who had accepted her authority over him, and he was now asking for her leadership.
But the trouble was, Sophie knew very little about the relationship between digivice, tamer and digimon. Of course, she couldn't actually say that, because that would be a disastrous outcome. But she couldn't lie to him either.
"Just trust in your partner, Satoshi" she said. But that advice sounded kind of useless on its own too. Then at once, she had an inspiration, and spoke a second sentence. "And make sure he knows it".
That was as far as her understanding of humans and their partners went. The digimon grew stronger through emotional bonds with their partners. If Satoshi could achieve this, then Sophie hoped that Gabumon would get stronger.
Lantis meanwhile gave a sigh as Gabumon declared that his deliberately missed attack had missed, then ran at him, aiming to stab with his horn. While Lantis did admire his courage, this would not be the strategy of a proper AEGIS agent when an enemy digimon attacked Earth.
"So I did" Lantis said. Then, just before Gabumon would strike him, Lantis would aim to grab the Rookie level. If successful, he would lift him in the air and throw him to the ground, carefully and without force so he wouldn't hurt him.
Somehow, being in the form of BlackJupitermon removed all of Colin's inhibitions to fighting. He wanted to test his powers as a digimon. With the souls of Luke and Bellamy pulsing by his own, he felt a huge rush of confidence, worthy of that of a digimon of the Olympus XII class facing another.
"Alright, here I come!" BlackJupitermon declared, rushing at Apollomon, and aimed a high punch at him. It was a deep curiosity, which of them was stronger. But he wouldn't be elated or disappointed to know the answer. After all, this was meant as only a training exercise.

Gabumon's frontal assault wasn't planned very well, so he had no way to dodge Lantis' grab. He was easily picked up and slammed into the ground. The pelt-wearing reptile suddenly got a little wake-up call in that moment. Satoshi, meanwhile, was lost in thought while contemplating Sophie's words. Was trust really all that was necessary? It seemed a little hard to do when he was at such a disadvantage. But, then again, wasn't that the point? Clutching his Digivice, Satoshi decided to shout a few words of encouragement. "Give it all you've got, Gabumon!" It felt a little forced and awkward, but it was. Satoshi still hadn't really bonded with Gabumon yet, but perhaps this was the start of something new. In response to Satoshi's words, the Digivice began to glow. All at once, Gabumon began to glow as well, and seemed to change before Satoshi's very eyes. "Gabumon Digivolve to...Garurumon!"When the light subsided, Gabumon was nowhere to be found. In his place stood an imposing, wolf-like figure. Satoshi was stunned, but luckily his job was done. Garurumon smirked at Lantis. "Told you I could do it!" It seemed he still didn't understand the role that Satoshi played in his development.
Apollomon got a rush of adrenaline as BlackJupitermon rushed him. He was excited to fight and see which of them was truly stronger. Marshal was amazed to see Colin's progression as a Tamer from the beginning, and this would be a true test for all involved. Apollomon rushed to meet BlackJuptermon and got in his zone. He put his arm out to block the incoming high punch, then attempted a low sweep with his leg at BlackJupitermon's feet.

Lantis and Sophie watched with satisfaction as Satoshi and Gabumon seemed to finally succeed in activating the digivice in this manner. Perhaps it wasn't much to begin with, but, on some level, something existed between them that activated this bond.
"Excellent work!" Lantis said, smiling as his opponent now got on his level. "Now, let's see what you're capable of!"
Once again, he launched a Juouken attack, sending a fireball in the shape of a lion's head at Garurumon. He was aiming for him this time, hoping that instincts in the beast digimon would kick in and allow him to react to it in time.
Sophie meanwhile could sense something powerful happening nearby. She wondered what that light was a few moments ago. Did the sun just emerge from behind a cloud?
In the mind of BlackJupitermon, the three consciousnesses had melded into one. By now, they had learned to accept how they would control the body of the biomerged digimon. As a human, Colin had little in the way of combat experience, and as a spellcaster digimon, Bellamy knew little of melee combat. But Luke was a little more skilled at that. And so, once he sensed what Apollomon was doing, he immediately snatched his arm back and retreated several feet, moving out of range of the sweep.
While BlackJupitermon's skills at melee combat were there, they were limited, and he could not right away figure out a way to counter that attack. "Not bad" he remarked. "How about this?" he then flew down at near ground level, aiming a punch from down low toward Apollomon's stomach. Not hard, but he wanted to learn how one would react to a strike from this angle.

Garurumon noticed that Lantis' attack was right on target this time. Figuring that it would behoove him to counter it, he inhaled deeply. "Howling Blaster!" was the technique of choice this time around. A large stream of blue flames met Lantis' attack and caused a small explosion, obscuring the two Digimon's view.
Satoshi, meanwhile, was in awe. He had no idea that Gabumon was actually capable! "Way to go!" he cheered, actually getting into it.
"Back up!"
"No, sidestep and counter!"
Conflicting suggestions from Marshal and Coronamon meant that Apollomon stayed motionless. As a result, he was hit squarely by the punch from BlackJupitermon. It wasn't hard enough to seriously harm him, but it was enough to piss him off a little bit.
"Attack!" they both thought in unison. Apollomon then grabbed BlackJupitermon's arm and pulled, trying to knock him off his balance. If this worked, they would have to agree on their next course of action for anything good to happen.

Lantis's attack was countered by Garurumon's own. He grinned with pride as the lesson was soon learned. "Excellent work! Projectile attacks quite often cancel each other out!" he said. "However, you may find yourself in a situation with multiple incoming attacks, in which one blast won't be enough. And it's good enough to hold off an onslaught, but what if you want to actually subdue your opponent?"
Lantis drew not his genuine blade, but a wooden training sword with a blunt edge. "That's where melee combat comes into it" he said. "You've evolved into a quadruped digimon. That comes with strengths and weaknesses. Your strength is that you have five weapons to use, your weakness is that you have limited mobility in each limb. So then, let's practice melee combat. All I ask, if you bite, please don't aim to kill, just nip me. I like that-" Lantis realized he said that out loud. "I mean! Er... I'd like that we can cover different types of battle style! Eheh..."
Sophie's palm was firmly on her face at this point. "God Lantis, I swear you'll be the end of me one day" she muttered. But she turned to Satoshi.
"You might feel like there's not much you can do, but, you're emotionally connected to your partner. Never lose faith in him, or that will weaken him" she advised.
To BlackJupitermon's surprise, Apollomon took the hit. But... why? What was going on?
Oh... he realized the moment Apollomon grabbed him. He took it deliberately to counter-attack. Well, he hadn't made a throwing move, so BlackJupitermon responded by grabbing Apollomon's other arm. What would happen next, he wasn't sure.
Perhaps they could start dancing or...
"Bellamy! Stop that! This is serious!" Colin and Luke snapped at the part of him that was Bellamy, who seemed to have other ideas on what to do here.

Garurumon wasn't sure what to make of Lantis. He certainly was...eccentric? That being said, now it appeared they were moving to melee combat. Garurumon wasn't entirely sure of his ability to fight up close, but he'd do his best! Without another ounce of bravado, he lunged at his opponent, fangs outstretched. "Sub-Zero Ice Fang!" he shouted, as he attempted to sink his teeth into Lantis' arms. Gently, of course! Satoshi listened intently to Sophie's words. Garurumon needed his support, but it still seemed like he didn't know his partner on the level he should've. He sat and pondered this for a bit. Garurumon uses Sub-Zero Ice Fang. Sub-Zero Ice Fang: Garurumon's fangs emit a frigid energy as he attempts to bite an opponent. Damages an enemy and also lowers their speed by 20% for two posts. 3 post cooldown.
The temporary block in Marshal and Coronamon's strained synchronization seemed to be just that as they immediately had a plan in mind for their counterattack. Since both of their arms were occupied, they moved to the next best thing: their legs! With a quick, crisp battle cry, Apollomon swiftly brought his knee out to attack BlackJupitermon, whose arms were similarly locked by Apollomon. The rest of the counterattack would hinge on the next moment.

Lantis could see the chilling ice from Garurumon's mouth. The Leomon may be large and bulky, but he still had feline reflexes, and as Garurumon lunged, he ducked and sidestepped so that instead Lantis would be biting down on his wooden sword. Instantly, the wood splintered and snapped, leaving Lantis without a weapon, but he saw that attack as a mistake.
"Had that been a metal sword, you'd be seriously injured now" he warned. "You need to learn to not charge into things. Look at the situation, you used a strong attack but you came too recklessly, enough for an opponent to dodge, and it'll be a while before you can use it again. You need to be more careful in melee combat".
Lantis looked at the hilt of his training sword, then dropped it. "Guess we won't be using this now" he remarked. "Sophie, do we have another?"
Sophie was busy looking at her digivice. It seemed there was some commotion coming from the forest.
"We should probably take a break from training for the moment" she said. "Something big is nearby".
Her investigative nature kicking in, Sophie looked in the direction where the two large energy signatures were coming from.
Not necessarily 'big', but 'powerful'. BlackJupitermon found his legs swept from under him, but quick reflexes and a beat of his wings prevented him from falling. However, that was quite a humiliating grapple.
"Ugh... we need to learn to coordinate better" Colin's voice remarked to the other two.
"Personally I don't get why we need to fight melee in the first place" Bellamy muttered. "We got like... one? Two melee attacks?"
"It's for defense as well" Luke argued. But Colin had had enough.
"Apollomon" BlackJupitermon said to his sparring partner. "Perhaps this method of training isn't working? Do you have any other suggestions how we can practice?"

Garurumon's fangs sank into Lantis' training sword, shattering it instantly. Lantis scolded him for being too reckless, but Garurumon didn't see anything wrong in what he did. Though, it did give him more to think about regarding his close-range capabilities.
Satoshi looked on, frustrated that Garurumon was being so reckless. He was seeing way better options for the huge wolf to do in that situation, and figured if he could strategize with his partner more, they would be able to become a formidible force. However, Satoshi was still unsure how he felt about the whole idea of being a Tamer and fighting others.
Apollomon got into his stance again once BlackJupitermon flew back, satisfied with how he was fighting thus far. BlackJupitermon asked if they could find another way to practice, since they didn't seem to do well in close-range.
"I suppose we could quit holding back so much," he guessed. "It's a nice sentiment, but there's no room for that in an actual fight. Besides, I have a few techniques I'm dying to try out."
Was it finally time to get serious? Only BlackJupitermon's response would tell.
