Some Things Change, Some Stay the Same [Kan]

Time in the Digital World was so weird.
She'd been away for two years in real time, so how long had passed here? It wasn't really clear, but the city definitely took a toll. It wasn't blown up like Luminas, but it had taken some damage.
In her human form, Vika decided to take a slower-paced walk through the city. She strolled down a main road intersecting with a marketplace, her hoverboard under her arms ready to fulfill a change of pace as soon as she needed it. Solving mysteries was one thing, but she couldn't solve much without a better foundation to work off. This still looked like the place to be for Digimon and humans alike, so the information they needed would be somewhere here. Red settled just behind her as a JeetHawkmon, much more familiar with the city.
"I'm surprised you're not in a rush." the Champion spoke up, speeding up just enough to catch up to the human. "It's good. Though not obvious, this place has changed quite a bit since you were here regularly."
"Yeah. Plus..Kilvasmon felt a little off." Vika added. "I didn't really notice it until I found you, but I didn't feel fully in sync. Not like I used to. I did basically swap out Wind Spirit training for track."
"I'm sure it's just a matter of time. Spirits are unusual. You've shown me as much."
Truth be told, this was a little concerning. There was that medication that had muddled Vika's connection with the Spirits years ago. It was possible this was a side-effect. From what he had heard, Spirit Users had few problems being comfortable in their lower levels. Even without including the Beast Spirit, Vika could reach the Human. So why would Sprite be awkward for her?
"Though you would be better off asking another Spirit User, I imagine."

To those that kept close tabs onto the human and digital world; they could tell how much time passed and often would talk consistantly with the friends they make there. So for kan who was a consistant detizen of the human and digital worlds was able to put things together much more easily than what you'd expect.
Today had been a day where checking up on old aquantinces turned into finding that their 'children' had replaced them making any meeting with the individuals moot points. His information ring had firmly collasped at this point; for favors of the father or mother didn't always go down to the children.
"I didn't really expect your friends to be there Kan, I'm surprised you did."
The massive form of shattermon rested not even two or three feet away from the spirit user. Everything about the digital spirit was that of a digimon, save that it's tail ended where Kan's digivice was. Which was tucked neatly in his pocket. The human sighed and shook his head; a hand running through his hair.
"yeah but sometimes you have to try. That digimon wasn't so much a friend as one that owed me a favor."
Kan was feeling a little irritated from this whole deal and looked around unsure as to where to go next with this whole... The spirit user did a double take and slowly stood up. Was he seeing things? He hadn't seen this particular individual for quite some time; it felt like nearly a decade at this point! Which they didn't seem to age that much if at al! Stepping forward and forcing the massive digital spirit to follow so that they wouldn't be dragged forcibly by their tail. What the hell was he supposed to say at this point really? Gritting his teeth and taking a few awkward steps, he was off to their side and they were talking to a digimon of theirs. He recalled firmly that she was a spirit and that was... likely a friend of hers; or a mercanary. His tone was careful but intensely curious; the sole word having a thin layer of surprise on it.
"Vika?"

Bad at noticing people sneaking up on her, was she? Vika certainly hadn't missed the burly man that seemed to be hesitantly approaching. He looked dangerous, but not exactly menacing. Actually those fangs even when his mouth was closed were kind of cool. Actually they were kind of familiar.
Unfortunately, her mind was elsewhere. It was the abomination attached to him that stole her attention. At least until the human spoke her name.
"Hey buddy! Sorry, you sound really familiar, but the name's not coming to me." she admitted , trying very hard not to stare at the demonic presence besides him. She pointed at the Digimon(?) with her free hand. "You I definitely don't remember. And I don't think I'd forget you."
Okay, someone she knew from before that was well built and had fangs. His Digimon could have just been at a different level, so that would be why she didn't recognize this form. Did she know someone like that? It felt like she did, but the name wasn't coming to her.
Red didn't seem to be much help either, and had stepped aside to give Vika time to speak with what he assumed was an old friend. He was much less interested in the Digimon, but it was certainly not one he had seen before. It also didn't seem to be 100% there.

Kan could tell right away from the look he got that vika didn't recognize him. It was slightly frustrating to say the least, but when was the last time they had actually interacted? He couldn't blame her if she had forgotten him; while his appearance had changed quite drastically since their last interaction just a few things remained the same.
He seemed rather taken back when she admitted that he sounded familiar but a name wasn't comign to her. Shattermon of course let out a soft and probrably very creepy chuckle to those that didn't know him better. It'd shift and take a seat next to kan who was seeming a bit hesistant to say something at this point.
"Oh no we've never met. But it's obvious my wielder has. I'm a digital spirit. Shattermon is what you can call me, pleased to make your aquaintance Ms. Vika"
Kan ran a hand through his hair and sighed; shaking his head ever so slightly before speaking.
"Feels like it was ages since We last talked. In fact I think I still had that digimon partner sebastian when we did. But that was so long ago. It's me. Kan."
He'd gesture uneasily with either hand, looking a little out of sorts. The shopkeep hadn't met Red before. But he had heard a tidbit or two if memory served. While the digimon wasn't interested in the spirit it seemed, the spirit was very curious of the digimon. It was after all the first time it had seen one like that; then again while being a spirit it had lain dormant for a very long time!
"Jeez. I must look really strange if you didn't recognize me!"

Well this was one way of re-entering the Digital World after a break; having an unusual Digimon chuckle uneasily at her. Vika glanced over at the Digimon with a tilt before returning her eyes to the familiar human. This thing - Shattermon - was a Spirit? A Spirit that could move freely rather than just a totem to be tapped into for power?
That was unnervingly close to the Beast; something Vika was not looking forward to getting reacquainted with. Here;s someone it turned out she was fine to get reacquainted with; the human revealed himself as Kan.
"Kan?! Like the guy with the shop? Wow, it's been longer than I thought. You look way different! Wouldn't say strange though. When'd you get so big?" the Wind Spirit smiled, punching his arm playfully. Right, she had met him mostly in passing along with his dragon partner Sebastian. She recalled the dragon being kind of snarky, actually.
"You have a Spirit now? Congrats on the upgrade. Spirits are much better. No offense to Sebastian." she added, looking over at Shattermon. That definitely wasn't Sebastian. "Guess Sebastian went off on his own once you got Spirits?"
Red was a little more fixated on the Shattermon explaining itself as a Spirit. Following the Digimon's body, he noticed it emerging from a point on Kan's body. A Digivice, most likely. This was the first time he'd ever seen a Spirit like this. Was this the result of too much independence on the Spirit's part?
"It's nice to meet you, Kan and Shattermon. You said you were a Spirit? How is it that..." the JeetHawkmon waved his wing vaguely in a circle at the Digimon, hoping to get his point across.

Shattermon could feel that vika was a little... surprised? Uneasy? Scared? All of those things to it were the same; he was used to looks like that. If something without a face could manage a smile; shattermon certainly just did. He was clearly amused and his entire body language could show it.
"yeah that's me. It feels like it's been forever but... You've barely changed Vika. I suppose when I started eating right and sleeping normally."
He'd give her a small smile and scratched the back of his head. He'd pause slightly on the mention of the "upgrade" mixed with a casual reference to his old partner. He'd shake his head softly at the guess that sebastian had left once he got his spirit.
"They seem to want to work with you a little more; seeing as they have to use your body as a base. Sebastian left before I was a spirit, said I was not the tamer for him. He did mention that we'd likely never meet again too; with that odd sense of finality."
Shattermon could tell that red was fixated on the spirit; it kept it's attention firmly planted on the digimon proper. It chuckled darkly at the question lifting a paw in such a civil and... human manner. It would answer this question of course; it saw no reason to hide secrets from it's user's friends.
"How is it that I'm able to do this? Because every single spirit that Kan has was either wandering, locked in some item for a long portion of time.. Or spread along a massive area. We weren't locked into totems like other spirits. We're not proper spirits mind you. We're something much... worse. Do I seem like the sort even in life that I'd be okay with being just a totem? I'm by far the least active in comparison to the others."
Kan snorted and crossed his arms; shooting the large spirit a glance before shaking his head. They weren't wrong. Shattermon really enjoyed his days and reading the paper most amusingly enough; something he had picked up from reapermon no doubt.

So this was what Kan looked like when he was taking care of himself? Vika had to wonder how much worse she'd look if she wasn't such a health freak. Not that her food intake was exactly the best. Or really even her sleep. Huh...on second thought, maybe this was actually her less impressive form.
"Guess I need to get more sleep to get muscles like those. Good to know. I bet actually fighting as a Spirit helps with that too. I feel like that helped me."
She looked over again at the Shattermon as Kan explained their arrangement. A Spirit User whose Spirits didn't use their body as a base? Though curious about Sebastian leaving, she got stuck on the point that connected with her more.
"Oh, is it because you used to be a Tamer? Wait, so who is in control when you Spirit Evolve? Is every Spirit like a Beast Spirit? Because, no offense Shattermon, that sounds annoying. Though I really wish I had you instead of that stupid Yatagaramon. Trust me, you aren't worse."
"You're going to have to learn to deal with that, Vika."
"I'm not saying I won't tame it. Actually it's a good thing the Beast can't come out like Shattermon."
Actually, just how present was this Shattermon's body right now? He had a ghostly trail connected to Kan's Digivice, so was he just a manifestation? Or did he have a physical body right now? Without hesitation, Vika marched up to the Digimon and tried to pet his head as if he were a dog. Just...a big dog. Actually it didn't seem intimidating anymore

"That or have spirits that nag you to do it, considering they nag like mad."
He'd snort a little bit and shook his head, he remembered being alot thinner. Much weaker and much much easier to tire before he was a spirit user. It also didn't help he had a pretty... Irrational partner so to speak. Shattermon made one of those soft unearthly chuckles at the mention of nagging, they weren't the sort to do so. It was mostly the others, they'd usually just mention if something was a good idea or not.
"It's majorly depending on the reason, if it's a fight I'm in control but if One of them wants to go eat or something like that it's usually them.
"Some of the other spirits might lend a hand if Kan is having a bad or off day, it's a give and take relationship more than anything. We don't want him to get killed or anything because that puts us in a bad place. Most spirits don't do what we do, or even get anywhere close to it."
The spirit shifted slightly as vika moved closer to them, if one could actually see it's face it's eyebrow would of been raised. Though it didn't move at all when Vika attempted to pet his head.. Only to have her hand go right through! It'd chuckle softly and shake it's head sadly.
"Ah. Yes. I am not physical, mostly just a projection. I can't do anything without Kan's half. I'm not strong enough to manage something like that. Silvermon or.. The other higher tier digivolutions might. But that's only because of their power."
"It can be a bit of a problem when one of them doesn't tell you they came out and you're trying to do something."
"Normal human's can't perceive us so what does it matter?"
Kan would shake his head and sigh; he didn't really know what to say to that. The spirit was certainly not wrong in the least bit.
"What about you vika? What have you been up to? Didn't really get a handle on what you did before to be fair, our interactions have been.. A tad more brief than I'd like."

Vika's hand carefully lowered onto the Shattermon's head, but her sense of touch betrayed her eyes. She continued to move her hand carefully down as it phased right through the Digimon's body as if expecting it's physical form to start lower. Upon realizing there was no physical form to make contact, she instinctively tried to prove this fact to herself again by waving her hand back and forth in the Digimon's face before bringing it back up and out.
"Kind of like a proper spirit, eh? Or a ghost. You did technically die, yeah?" the Wind Spirit laughed, barely realizing the sting in her words. Red shot her a look like a frustrated parent, chastising her with his eyes.
"So you can't eat anything? Hold on, normal humans can't see you? That actually sounds like fun. Like if imaginary friends were real. They can't scare customers."
"They still could in this world." Red interjected. "It really is a unique situation. I've worked with Spirits for some time, and this is the first time I've seen this. I know some people who would be quite interested to look at you, Kan."
The bird would also risk a much slighter touch at the base of the Shattermon, almost expecting a reaction despite seeing what had happened with Vika.
Vika puffed herself up when asked what she had been up to. "Digimon-wise not much, but I've been getting a handle on some human stuff that wasn't on track before. These days my wins are at school and at track. But I really miss this place. And I think I missed a lot that happened. It's tough balancing the Digimon stuff with the human stuff for you too, right?"

Shattermon let out a loose chuckle as vika attempted to touch them, even going so far as to phasing through his head and waving it about before taking her hand out. It didn't get this reaction most of the time, many others thought he was just a digimon unless kan explained it or the spirit that was out was cheerful enough to do the same. This was practically the second case of something like this, but this was the sole case of someone not seeming threatened by such a fact.
"Some of us died, some of us were locked away for such a time where our physical form became unstable to the point of being a spirit. Such is the case of Silvermon. I however did die; it wasn't a pleasant experience and my data didn't really survive the whole transition."
The spirit glanced at kan whom just gave him a small shrug, he wasn't afraid of telling what was up when it came to this to a long time friend after all. It wasn't like she was going to use this information poorly or to her advantage later. It's been all sunshine for the most part in their interactions.
"Not unless I'm the one kan chooses to digivolve into, and no. Normal humans cannot see or touch me. The same goes with the rest of the digivolutions."
Kan would blink and rub the back of his neck as the conversation continued. Though when red addressed him; he'd furrow his brow and pause. Sharing a glance with his spirit before raising one brow questioningly.
"Some people? Like whom exactly if you don't mind me asking?"
Like vika, red's touch was greeted by the same experience. His slight touch phased completely through him without any resistance what-so-ever. The spirit snorted softly and tilted it's head.
"We may be data red, but mine isn't solid like yours. I legitimately cannot interact with this world on my own. Or other digimon. Maybe on a good day I can manage to move something around, but that's very rare."
Kan tilted his head and chuckled. He felt that something fierce, his first few early years were difficult. Trying to balance real life on the digital. Though when she asked him about it, he simply shook his head.
"Well it's good that you're having school take priority, getting your life sorted out is the first good step. As for balancing things out? Not really, not anymore. I've been doing this for a long time; which has let me figure out things. There's a reason why I chose my shop to be in society hill. It's one of the best spots both security wise and living wise. So few break ins and those that do happen are responded to quickly. You probrably have, couldn't really tell you much past a little here and there. I'm not exactly firmly in the know, never was my thing as you probrably recal."

The Shattermon explained that while some of Kan's spirits had died, others were "unstable". Would that Beast Yatagaramon count as "unstable"? It was strange enough to keep in mind that her other forms were Digimon that had once lived. It wasn't completely new information to Vika, but somehow she hadn't understood the implication of that. Specifically the implication of borrowing the power of the dead. Did they know this was going to happen when they were still alive? How awkward would it feel knowing they would be used even after death by some human they would never meet?
At the very least, Shattermon seemed happy about this situation. "Hey Kan, you make sure to let Spirit Evolve and let Shattermon taste food or something. Actually we're on our way to food if you want to come with."
But it seemed Kan's attention was on Red and the people he had mentioned having an interest in this unique Spirit situation. "I technically work for some Digimon who look over Wind Spirits in Luminas City." the JeetHawkmon explained,"I haven't heard much from them since that attack by Vexus. I had been meaning to take Vika there for quite some time. Though you're not a Spirit of Wind, I imagine they would still gain something useful in meeting with you."
"I haven't even met these people, Red. Maybe I would have if not for those stupid Vexus people. I remember getting to knock some heads back when that happened, though the real fight was...even if I could control the Beast, I wouldn't have stood a chance. Those were some Super Mega fights."
"Vexus seems to be gone now, at least."
Meanwhile it seemed Kan had found balance within a more volatile lifestyle. Which was really the kind of thing Vika was hoping to find. "Oh yeah, your shop's in Tokyo, right? There are a bunch of Spirits and Tamers from Japan, so you can get the word out in the Digital World too."

"Well of course, Though ussually it's silvermon that shows interest in food tasting more than anyone else."
"Ussually meat if memory serves."
"Wouldn't be against doing that either."
A small shrug and kan tilted his head. His face drained of color a bit when Red explained that it was in Luminas city. He couldn't go there could he? They were likely still keeping a look out of him. Sure he didn't fully participate in the attacks but he was still there at one point.
He had missed the fighting completely, in fact if memory served he had gotten there shortly after everything had settled. Which only meant he could of been seen all the more easy. Then of course the mention of vexus made the spirit user rather uncomfortable and he shifted slightly. Shattermon on the other hand seemed rather amused by this turn of events, turning his head slowly to look at Kan.
"Are you going to tell them or should I?"
"...."
Kan looked rather uncomfortable still, shattermon looked as though he would of been raising his eyebrows if they had any.
"I imagine they would get more than useful information if I went. I was a part of Vexus at the time of attacks and yes they are gone. No I didn't participate in the attacks directly but I was there when the planning happened. Doesn't make me feel any better considering what happened."
"And?
"..And they're probably still looking for people that had been a part of it, no doubt they'd like to get their hands on me."
"Wouldn't be a good scene either way."
Kan looked beyond grumpy; though it was obvious he wasn't exactly too thrilled with the idea of telling his friend this. He'd cross his arms glancing down in irritation at shattermon. Whom looked as though he'd be grinning.
"Society hill, it's a good locale for selling or fixing things. Rich folk break their stuff more often than not. And tamers, spirit users or such seem to crop up more often than not. Word doesn't spread as fast as it used to however."

The positive reply to getting food from Kan was enough to get Vika starting to walk again in the same direction as before. There was no specific restaurant in mind, but there was definitely some kind of food this way. They were in a city after all. She wanted to ask if Shattermon eats, did they both taste it?
But the topic had already turned more serious when Luminas and Vexus were brought up. Kan seemed visibly worried. Had he been caught in the attack too?
...not quite.
"You were part of Vexus?!" Vika exclaimed probably too loudly, instinctively forming a fist with her right hand. At least a few passerbys seemed to hear her, and some even stopped to watch. Red simply looked at Kan, then back at Shattermon.
"Former members. You'd be correct to think you have people looking for you. It's possibly my bosses may be among them." the bird mulled, rubbing the tip of one wing against his chin. "But this is not a conversation to be had here."
"But it is a conversation I want to hear. How the hell did you get mixed up with those losers? Vika added, uncurling her fist and motioning with her head for Kan and Shattermon to follow. "You know a quiet restaurant around here?"

Of course kan didn't start walking; he seemed a little too hesitant now. The topic change had made it seem rather awkward; in fact he could feel a small gap open up with it. It was frustrating and he knew he had to deal with it in the only manner he knew how. Straight forward and firmly. Her exclaimation however made him visibly flinch.
"Yes. I was."
The few passersby gained the attention of the shopkeep, who simply shrugged at them. This wasn't something they needed to hear; it didn't include them/ To them he was just a human having a normal discussion with another human...
"I would agree Red. I wouldn't be all too surprised if that was the case either."
He'd follow after the other spirit user, shattermon quietly chuckling as though they found this entire thing amusing. Upon the question of a quiet restraunt the shopkeep snorted and gave a small nod.
"Yeah I know a few, they've got private rooms for meetings and dining services. Everything is automated and the rooms are quite large. As is I owe you an explanation it seems."
Shattermon padded forward, if the creature could smile it certainly was right now...
"It's a small walk from here, but I don't think that'll be a problem."

Following Kan's lead, the small group was soon seated at a nearby restaurant. Despite the fact this was the Digital World, Vika sometimes forgot how advanced things could be here. This little restaurant was nearly entirely automated. Even as someone who lived in one of the world's major cities, this technology was beyond her.
She sat down across from the friend who she turned out not too know too well. A menu lay barely touched under her elbow as she rested her chin in her palm. The door to this little private room was closed and a little more sound-proof than expected, causing the impatient tapping of her free hand's fingers on the table to feel exaggerated.
"So as far as I know," Vika started, raising her chin from her palm, "Vexus was just a bunch of criminals who attached Luminas out of nowhere. What's the deal with them? How'd someone like you get mixed up with them? Blackmail or something?"
Red was a little more cautious, having barely known Kan and holding a stronger connection to the attacked city. He knew a bit more about Vexus, but not enough to try to explain when they could get information directly from an ex-member. But this was definitely an awkward situation for Kan, so it was hard to say how much information he'd get. And whether any of it would be of interest to his superiors. Based on Shattermon, it was clear that if things went into a combat role...they were screwed.
Which meant he had to hope for the best in terms of Vika not pissing Kan off.
