Alice followed the group cautiously, not wanting to be annihilated by some angry Digimon. That seemed to be a common problem for her. She wasn't too sure what to make of the boy in the wheelchair, he seemed nice... But at the same time, he was really, REALLY weird.
Leo casually followed the group, all but ready to scoop up Alice in a moment's notice, stick her on his shoulder, and charge into battle. It wasn't smart... He wasn't a smart Digimon. He never was that smart to be honest, even as an egg, he just emitted bad ideas. This was among his worst and they were better off not running into anything until he forgot it. Of course, they were bound to run into something with their combined bad luck.
Then the wheelchair kid started talking about decapitations, people being guaranteed to die and some who were guaranteed to live... What!? "Uhh... My name's Alice by the way..." As if that was the weirdest part, he then started talking about Kat's odds of living correlating to whether she's a virgin or not... What!?
Alice wasn't sure to make of that. Was Katsura a virgin? She never took the time to find out, that was Katsura's business. "I... Don't think Kat's had a kid before... So that'd make her a virgin... Right? Wait, have you had a kid? That'd be weird at your age, right?"
Then they're suddenly fine? They were gonna all live all of a sudden? Was this kid okay at all? Suddenly Leo was looking a lot smarter than this guy...
This kid kept getting weirder and weirder, admittedly it was heartwarming to see him going to such an extreme length for his partner, even if he didn't seem quite right in the head. Nyao being a cat meant that she could hear everything Duffer mumbled even when he was quiet. It took her a while to understand the English but she could make out something about predators and how they operate. "Cats are predators, you know." Nyao replied to hint how great her hearing was and that talking to yourself in a group is bad taste. Duffer then began talking with Katsura. "I hate to say it but I kinda have to stick with you now." "Yes, you do." Katsura said, still implying that he had no say in the matter. Duffer then almost turned Nyao hostile by saying that just because Katsura is a virgin she's not going to survive. You could see Nyao going from content to serious to predatory, then down to unfriendly and finally indifferent sensing that Duffer had realized along midsentence how much he was currently screwing things up for himself. Meanwhile Alice was confused as well thinking that Katsura might have a child despite being 15. "Baka..." "Nyao, be nice it's not his fault he's reading too many comic books. I mean a hospital must be boring." "I know sigh but he should still be more careful how he word things." "He's just in distress because his partner has been abducted. By the way Alice, I don't have children." "If this escalates I'll need to be minervamon." "Let's see how it goes for a while."

"No, see, the thing is that if you're in a horror movie situation there are key rules that need to be followed." He changed his demeanor to one of a more... disciplined (for lack of a better term). "Rule One: Never have sex. Rule Two: Do not drink alcohol or have drugs. Rule Three: Do NOT say "I'll be right back", "Hello?" or "Who's there?". If we follow these three rules our survival rate will be much, much higher." Duffer returned to his more frightened mannerisms. "Of course, those are just the rules for a slasher film. If what kotemon told me is correct, we may be dealing with a spectral menace. Far more unpredictable, although they tend to gravitate more towards people who are alone or simply don't believe in supernatural phenomenon... that means you two." He pointed to Kat and Alice. "But this also means a higher chance of either full survival or total party kill. The sooner we find kotemon and leave the lesser the ramifications of our actions will be. So..." He turned back to Kat.
"Your call then, If you're the leader that means you have a better chance to live and you seem to be the one with the strongest partner right now."
"So wait... Two of these things I don't think I can do without getting into huge trouble anyways... And the last one is just dumb, why would I greet the possible threat in the woods?" Alice was more lost than anything, how was she so lost? It was because none of this made sense to her in the slightest. She scratched the back of her head, then decided that it wasn't worth thinking on. "Lead the way Kat, you're the only experienced at this rate..."
Leo looked insulted, "I'm experienced! Look at me! I'm a giant lion with a sword!" He then drew the sword to display it proudly.
"You just got that, I'm pretty sure Nyao is still scarier and stronger."
With that Leo just shut up and got ready to follow them. Though he was slowly coming into his now Leomon personality, growing a bit more stoic and appearance and now constantly alert, and not jumping at the sight of battle anymore, but at the sight of a threat to his partner.
Katsura was starting to get tired of Duffer's comic book obsession but as much as it annoyed her it confirmed that abandoning him in the middle of the forest would spell doom for him. In her own sassy way, Nyao found an excuse to interrupt Duffer's rant. "Rule One: Never have sex. Rule Two: Do not drink alcohol or have drugs. Rule Three: Do NOT say "I'll be right back", "Hello?" or "Who's there?". If we follow these three rules our survival rate will be much, much higher." "Rule four the level headed girl always survives." "Nyao, don't say that number." This was Nyao's dark sense of humor in a nutshell but it also pointed out a very obvious hole, that Duffer by all means was currently the one with the lowest survival rate. Even horror movie tropes weren't on his side, at best he would amount to creepy enlightened child no one takes seriously that sees dead people, at worst well that's probably not worth writing about. Katsura on the other hand was a prime candidate for the title of "the final girl" and Alice a 2nd. Not very good odds there. Speaking of Katsura, she waited politely for him to finish up. "I'm sorry Duffer... Umm it's not that I don't believe in the occult, I have been in the dark area too, it's just ugh, you're just umm." Katsura realized mid-sentence that no matter how she chose to finish that line, Duffer's feeling would inevitably get hurt. So she just sighed in pity, by the end of the day Katsura was elected the leader it seemed. Katsura turned to Nyao, who had jumped down. "Nyao can you catch his scent with the helmet?" "What do I look like, a dog?" "Fine, at least listen then."
And so Nyao did, she closed her eyes and listened for every sound. Being a cat she was able to hear far better than any human.

At the mention of his really, really, really, REALLY low survival rate, Duffer immediately hunched into his chair, cowering and shivering. They'd gotten him to shut up now, but good luck getting info on Kotemon like that. He wheeled closer to the girls, not saying a word as he passed Kotemon's helmet to Kat. He held onto the training sword though. As Nyao pointed out she wouldn't track a scent but even then it still smelled like sweat and... redeye? Huh. A bit of cup ramen as well, likely a carry over from when he worked for a living while Duffer was comatose.
The surrounding woods were silent, a breeze of wind occasionally, a piyomon chirping in her nest, normal nature noises... until the sound of something falling over in the far west interrupted, something that sounded like a heavy amount of fabric falling from a tall height, presumably Kotemon's cloth armor.
Alice stared at Duffer in his broken state for a moment, sighing. She didn't understand all the movie references, but she did understand enough to know that something about it mean't that Duffer was kinda screwed. She was glad to be ignorant of horror movies though, with her luck, most of it would be her daily life anyways. "Kat... I think you broke him..."
Leo let out a sigh and looked down at Duffer as well, "Don't worry, small, easily breakable human. I will protect you with my life, as if you were my own!"
"Leo, stop telling people you'll risk your life for them, you might actually jinx one of them."
"But I will, and I refuse to believe in jinxing one's death!"
Katsura saw getting all timid and scared, which made Katsura visibly feel guilty about herself. This was exactly what she wanted to avoid. "I... I'm sorry, I didn't mean it like that."
Katsura stood before Duffer, looking him in the eyes, while she accepted the helmet. "We will find your partner, I promise." As on cue, Nyao's ears twitched as she had picked up a sound coming from the west of something dropping. Nyao turned in the direction of the sound before announcing the discovery. "I heard something from that direction." "That's wonderful news. See Duffer? We'll get him back in no time."
While this was going on Alice and her leomon was in a conflict over being a guardian. Knowing how much it meant for Nyao to protect Katsura she could relate and gave her a thoughtful nod. Well now it was time to get to action if you asked Katsura, she was starting to get in touch with her leader role after a deep breath. "Okay, Alice you take care of Duffer move his wheelchair around and stuff like that leomon protect Alice and Duffer and if you have a higher form we'll need it now. Nyao lead the way."
Nyao nodded and began running towards the sound she heard while Katsura followed her. Katsura assumed that Alice and Leomon was with her at this point.

Duffer still stayed silent as Leomon attempted to reassure him that he'd be fine and that he would be protected with the digimon's life. "Great, more survivor's guilt..." He said silently. "Not to mention you come back, I'm gone after one go." He looked at the Leomon, worried. Kat reassured him, and for some reason, he felt slightly better looking into her vibrant red eyes. He nodded when he heard Nyao and began to wheel himself when Kat suggested Alice do it instead.
"That's... probably a better idea, yeah..." He let Alice push, sighing and shaking his head. "I won't miss this stupid thing when I get better..." He said, looking at the wheelchair. Nyao would find the cloth armor characteristic of the Kotemon breed laying on a tree root, splayed out like if it had tripped before whatever was inside evaporated. Nyao would feel a chill from the left of her, and a motion so slight a human wouldn't have caught it if they tried.
Alice, in response to Katsura's idea, moved behind Duffer's wheelchair and got ready to start pushing him around. She liked this, if anything attacked, she had a human shield. Did she have the lack of morals to do that to another human being? Well if it's her life or his life... She'll choose her's. Well, actually Leo would probably take the hit, but still.
Leo, of course, was ready to take any hit for the local group. Was it smart? Probably not. Did that matter? Of course not. "This is my highest form. It'll be fine."
Alice wasn't at all reassured by that, but she had no room to argue and thusly, just followed Katsura. "How long have you even been in this thing?" She, of course, never felt said chill and just went on her way following them.
Katsura was a bit disappointed that Leo only had access to champion but it wasn't something she could do anything about. An unimpressed sigh was all Katsura wanted to do about this. Besides, now wasn't the right time to tell Alice about the advanced levels of digimon. Meanwhile as Nyao arrived to the source of the noise upon arriving she saw a helmet laying on a tree root. Katsura made a glance at Duffer wondering how he'll take this, then Nyao looked to the left. It was obvious that Nyao had picked up on something. "That's it Katsura let's do it." Katsura nodded, while holding her Crest of loyalty in one hand and her digidevice in the other. Out from her digidevice, a beam shot out hitting Nyao. She started to grow into a tall valkyrie-like woman. "Blackgatomon warp digivole to... Minervamon." And with her new level of power, the chill was now only enough to get her to walk towards the motion she had sensed.

Duffer stared mortified at the pile of clothing. He looked about to cry, appeared that part of him had died, and tried to crawl out of his wheelchair to gather the remains. He took several shaky steps before collapsing on his malnourished and decayed muscles, falling back into the chair and crying. He didn't seem to notice Nyao's change, didn't seem to notice anything other than what remained of his companion.
In the trees a white blur seemed to dance and move, never appearing from behind the bark for too long. The rustling and motion of something moving happened seconds after the shape passed them as the air felt stuffy and cold, despite the time and location. The blur stopped behind a hallow oak, an air of silence as it stayed "hidden" with nothing heard but Duffer's sobs and a heavy breathing.
Alice was now a little nervous, there was something out there, everyone could feel it. Except maybe Duffer, he was sobbing too much. She just had to come up with a way to hopefully get them out if something does attack. Option one was to just book it and hope the Minervamon would kill it fast enough. Another option would be to make a slow retreat behind her allies, though that keeps them close. Option three is to just wing it... Screw it, she isn't dead yet.
Leo drew his blade and slowly approached the Oak tree from where the white shadow stopped. "Stand back everyone, I'm going around." Leo then ran around the tree and got in a defensive stance in case it attacked him. As he dashed around, he crossed his arms over his chest and get ready for an attack.
It was very painful for Katsura to see Duffer completely devastated. What can a girl, who constantly wanders around preaching to every digimon partner on her way how their digimon is their best friend for life, say to a boy who had lost his digimon like that? For all Katsura's calmness and whatever maturness that somehow made her elected to leader, Katsura herself couldn't be away from her beloved Nyao in 5 minutes let alone for life. The first sign that this affected Katsura on a personal level was how she immediately clenched a note in her pocket, only to hide it away as soon as she was convinced someone would see her. Then Katsura did the only thing she could think of in such short notice, Katsura walked towards the piece of armor and picked it up.
Then she offered it to Duffer, if this adventure would end on a sad note at the very least, Duffer deserved every piece of memory Katsura could find. Katsura then proceeded to pat him on the shoulder and generally try to make him feel better. As for Nyao she was actually ready to step in now, but for now it looked like Leo was the one with most initiative and well a tall valkyrie-like mega is likely too intimidating for the first meeting with this thing in the trees. For this reason, Nyao supervised Leo and was ready to step in if things turned out bad.

Behind the tree was an attack waiting, a large fireball came hurtling towards the leomon's head. Beyond this, the white figure dashed away, leaving a trail of purple flames burning in the footsteps it took. The heat from both footprints and fireball had a disturbing convection, leaving a mysterious vapor that was hard to breath as well as lingering heat almost as hot as the flames themselves.
There would be a few things Katsura would notice about the cloth armor as she picked it up; 1. it was burned and covered in ashes. Although it was still in one piece the outer exterier was singed past its purple outer cloth. 2. It was still warm, and damp with sweat. If Kotemon had left it, there's a large chance it wasn't too long ago. 3. No fragmented data, meaning whatever they were fighting had probably taken every piece of kotemon.
When the girl approached and apologized, Duffer hugged Kat, holding her closely, even if she fought it. The pain he felt in his heart and soul at that moment was immeasurable. "I thought he said digimon couldn't die." the boy said, weeping. "That if he killed himself he'd be back by suppertime. Why would he lie?" As the boy mourned, the burning figure reappeared behind him, the boy unaware as it began to draw closer to the back of his wheelchair. It stared Katsura in her red eyes as it came closer, not looking like anything other than a walking white stain.
