Some stories get passed down through the ages, changing with every retelling. And then somebody gets ahold of a story, and completely ruins everything decent about it. This is one of those stories, expect it actually took place.
The sun rises in the sky above the desert. Far away from other cities in the Digital World, four tan giant stone walls stretch from the sand up to the sky. This is the desert trade city of Nubar. A few months ago, the city started suffering from a shortage of food, as bandits laid waste to their trade caravans. Nubar was sent into a spiral of despair. Hungry Digimon joined the bandits, and started riots in the city. Only after a few select heroes arrived in Nubar, and the reigning Sultan was imprisoned, did things start returning to normal. However, the damage had been done. Now, the city is ruled over by a group of elected officials, but the citizens of Nubar still go hungry...
Down in the market district, a lone roguish Digimon prepares to steal his meal for the day. A Gazimon named Domon wearing tan and purple robes stalks through the streets. Domon and his younger brother Willis have come to Nubar seeking opportunity, but like most refuges, they go hungry and overlooked. As Domon walks past several market stalls, the merchants all look at him with suspicious glares. Theft had become a huge problem for the merchants, and the city's guards were quick to stop thieves by any means necessary. Anyone brave enough to steal food was placing their life at risk.
Domon casually strolls up to a market stall. His mouth waters as he sees fresh apples, tantalizing slabs of meat, and fluffy bread right out of the oven. Domon picks up a loaf of bread and examines it carefully. He takes a big sniff, inhaling the aroma of the bread. The Agumon merchant is suspicious of the Gazimon. "You better have the coin to pay for that." Domon looks over at the armed guards stationed just down the street. "Of course, my good chum. I have some gold right here." Domon sets the loaf down and takes out a small pouch. He opens it up and reveals a few shiny gold coins.
Agumon's eyes grow big at the sight of the gold. "Ah, my apologies, sir! Let's see, one loaf of bread, that comes to 3 gold pieces." "What?! Are you kidding me with that price?" "Hey, food is so scarce, if anything I'm selling this at a loss." Domon looks down, trying to contain a small smirk. "Alright, well then I'll take 3." Domon puts three loafs of bread into a pouch on his back. "Come on, give me the gold!" "Easy now, I'm not trying to pull anything here." Domon casually adjusts the pouch of gold coins. He switches to a different but identical pouch full of small rocks. Gazimon tosses the merchant the pouch. "That oughta cover it." Domon turns and casually strolls off.
Agumon tosses the pouch up and down in his paws, celebrating his sale. "Oh yes! This is more gold than I've made in the last week." Agumon tries to open the pouch, but it is tied too tightly. "What the? This stupid thing won't open." Finally Agumon slashes the pouch open with one of his claws, and the rocks spill out the side. "Gasp, thief! Help me, I've been swindled!" The guards overhear Agumon's cries. Domon continues casually walking down the street, but Agumon points him out to the guards. "That's him, he tried to pay for bread with rocks!" The guards raise up their spears and charge towards Domon. "Uh oh, cue some chase music!" Domon takes off through the market district, attempting to escape the guards with his life intact. A Sorcerimon merchant watches on as the guards pursue the Gazimon. "Hmph, another street rat."

The story of how Owen the Gaomon ended up in Nubar was... a little embarrassing to be honest. Namely that he had taken his earlier acquaintances' advice and practiced flying as MachGaogamon over the sandy desert. At least that didn't really have the risk of drowning if he crashed into the sea again.
Still, learning how to fly by jetpack was something the clumsy mutt found to be a very steep learning curve. And so one day, he was flying over what appeared to be a large city in the desert. Naturally curious, Owen flew down toward it, but, most unfortunately, still hadn't got the hang of landing quite yet. And so, it was most unfortunate that he ended up crash-landing in one of the towers of the palace that loomed over the city proper. The impact was such that he immediately de-digivolved to Gaomon as he crashed into what appeared to be a stately bedroom.
"Oh my god I'm so sorry..." he said to a figure approaching, as his vision was blurred. As he slowly regained focus... he realized that he seemed to have crashed into a room owned by another Gaomon. That was odd. He hadn't seen another one of his kind up close before.
"Oh, no, no need to be sorry" the Gaomon replied. Owen blinked, that voice was female. Owen realized she was wearing a very elegant tiara and silk clothing under a rough brown cloak. "In fact you've come at the perfect time! Now I can escape from here!"
"Escape... what?" Owen asked, but before he could ask more, she had jumped out of the hole he had made in the wall, leaving him alone in the mess he had created. He looked down to see her sliding down the curved wall of the tower.
It was then that Owen heard noises from behind him, the door was being unlocked and a bunch of digimon entered, all equipped with swords and menacing expressions on their faces.
"So, Princess, you thought you could escape this easily, eh?!" one asked. "That's too bad! You're still going to marry the official whether you like it or not!"
"What?!" Owen asked, too shocked by these developments to say much else. In his rookie form, his voice was higher pitched like a boy's, so the guards did not register that he was male.
"Oh, you know exactly why!" the guard said, approaching. "You're the daughter of the imprisoned Sultan! By marrying you, princess, you will bring royal legitimacy to our elected government of Nubar!"
"But... I'm already engaged" Owen told him. Engaged to his beloved Hikaru in fact. It was then that the guard was confused.
"Wait... what did you say?" the guard asked. Then all at once, Owen had his wits returned to him, and gave an almighty bark that blew the guard backwards. Owen's Wild Echo attack seemed sufficient to give him time to escape. He grabbed his belongings, then jumped out the window, sliding down the tower.
"After her!" the guard yelled behind him. All this was very confusing for Owen, it should be obvious that he was no princess, but then again, digimon had none of that anatomy. He gathered speed as he slid down the wall, but thankfully (or not so luckily), there seemed to be a pursuit of sorts going on below. And Owen landed (thankfully not fatally) on one of the guards that seemed to be chasing a Gazimon.
So many crashes today. Oh dear. "S-sorry!" Owen said, struggling back to his feet.

As the trickster Gazimon escapes through the city streets, he can hear a loud crashing sound off in the distance. Had he not been playing the mouse to the guards' cat, he would have stopped for a moment to look up, but he was so in the moment he just kept running. As he runs through the market, he reaches over and knocks over a rack full of not so fresh fish to slow down his pursuers. As he turns the corner, two more large guards swing their polearms at him. Gazimon barely manages to duck in time, then leans back as the blade on the spear slices off some hair on his chin. "Ah, come on, mon! It's just some bread."
Gazimon turns to run, and scrambles up to the top of a large market stall. He soon finds himself surrounded, as the much bulkier guards attempt to scale the stall. The guards insult and threaten the wily Gazimon. "Thievery will not be tolerated in Nubar!" "But, I gotta eat to live, and I gotta steal to eat..." The screws holding the stall start to come loose, and it collapses down on some of the guards. Gazimon is sent sliding off the edge, landing in a barrel full of slop meant for more beastly Digimon. "Eww, yuck! My fur is gonna smell for weeks." Domon climbs out and continues running.
The lone Gazimon is starting to run out of breath. "This is way more cardio than I expected." As Domon is running past the palace, an airborne Gaomon falls out of the sky and lands on the guards chasing Gazimon. (Thinking) "Hey, this is my chance!" Gazimon turns the corner, and sees a Renamon wearing a long green dress. She is actually an ambassador visiting from far away. "Pardon me, miss." Gazimon lifts up her dress and crawls underneath. The Renamon is stunned this street rat would do such a thing to such a high ranking official, but as she sees the guards coming, Renamon doesn't want to see the little hairball hurt. She plays it cool as the guards pass by.
Domon lifts up the dress and takes a peak out. "Is it safe?" "Yes, now get out of my dress this instance!" "Hee hee, sorry..." Domon crawls out and takes a look around. When he does not see any guards, his body slowly clams down from the adrenaline rush. "Oh mon, all that for some bread." Renamon gives Gazimon a stone cold glare. Gazimon puts his paws up to say "Well, what are you gonna do?" He sees the Gaomon that fell from the sky. "Hey, are you alright there? I guess your misfortunate ended up helping me." "Just what were you thinking trying to run from the guards? You probably caused 10 times the damage than the cost of a week's worth of food."
That might have been true. The destroyed stalls, the wasted fish. Gazimon checks to see if Gaomon is alright. A high pitched voice is heard from the shadows, as a Tsukaimon emerges from hiding inside a stall full of silk robes. "What a shame. The Skullbusters reduced to stealing food. I had heard how bad it was here in Nubar, but I thought we could at least find enough work to feed ourselves." Tsukaimon trots out, complaining to his older brother. Or maybe it was his younger brother now? "Ya ya, I know, Willis. I didn't see you getting us something to eat." "Hmph, if Nubar's officials had any marbles, they would rid the city streets of riff raff like you." "Hey, come on. That hurts." Gazimon reaches into his bag and takes out three loaves of bread. "Well, I hope it was worth it. I'm starving! Dig in." Gazimon takes a savage bite out of one of the loaves. He offers to share with everyone. Renamon just scoffs and turns to walk away, examining other market stalls.

As Owen recovered from his fall, it seemed the guard he had fallen on had been knocked unconscious. Oh... oh dear, that was unfortunate. The other guards seemed to have been distracted momentarily, but, seemed more intent on resuming their chase of the Gazimon than dealing with him.
Supposing he'd better leg it out of here, Owen then quickly hid behind a nearby rug stall until the commotion had ended. He watched as some other digimon whistled innocently before taking the unconscious guard's sword and running away.
Eventually, he found it was safe to emerge. He... rather stood out in this setting, what with other digimon wearing long robes while here he was simply dressed in his fur and carrying a small messenger bag. He hoped that the guards that had seen him in the palace would lose sight of him quickly, and figure out that he wasn't the "princess", although he would probably be in worse trouble.
He then found a small stall that sold clothing and brought himself a light brown robe, yes, that should do for now. There was even a hole in the back for his tail, which was convenient. He had enough money to pay.
Owen then turned around and saw the Gazimon that had fled earlier. He was a little confused, there was also a Renamon nearby that seemed irritated. "Er... hi" Owen said, unable to think of much else. Wait, so the Gazimon was being chased for stealing food?
It seemed the Gazimon had a Tsukaimon friend, and ate the bread in the street. The Renamon then scoffed and walked away. Supposing that the Gazimon seemed to be the one that seemed most likely to talk, given that he checked to see if he was alright, Owen coughed to get his attention.
"Um, I'm very sorry, but, I'm very confused about everything right now" he said. "I, er, accidentally crashed in the palace up there, then another Gaomon flew out of the hole I made, then some guards stormed in and said that I was the princess and that I'm going to marry an official whether I like it or not, then... I just kinda landed here and it's all very confusing" he chuckled. "Oh, I'm Owen by the way".

Well that was a lot of effort just to procure some bread. Has Nubar's economy gotten that bad? The Gaomon who had fallen out of the sky returned wearing some light brown robes. From the sound of it, Gaomon was new to the area. Gazimon offers the bread to Tsukaimon and Gaomon, before finishing a loaf. "Mmm, so fresh. Sounds like you are not from around here... Owen, was it? My name's Domon. How ya doing?" "And I'm Willis, Domon's brother. This is our first time here too. We came here hoping to earn a living." Domon hops up onto a barrel and takes a seat, leaning against a sign advertising cart insurance. The Gazimon takes out his pouch of coins and pulls out a gold coin. He holds it up to the sun and examines the design; the portrait of the former Sultan Ram, and on the back an image of Nubar's immense walls with a stream of merchants entering the city.
"Enough to earn a living... We can hardly get by. What's the point of working your whole life just to afford food and a place to stay? If we're ever going to get out of the slums, we're going to need a lot of gold." The brothers had grown up in a small village with their family. They were not wealthy, but they could afford to eat. After the brothers were separated from their family while fleeing for their safety, Willis and Domon have been flat out broke. Part of the reason Domon wanted to come to Nubar was the chance to make some coin by measures that were not exactly legal. Willis takes a few bites of bread, then puts the other half in a side bag. "Ya, at this rate you're going to get caught before we save up enough. If we don't find a good opportunity soon..."
The brothers were in a jam. Domon doesn't know what Owen's situation is. It would be rude to ask for money out of pity. Owen had said that after he crashed into the palace, the guards mistook him for the Princess. Domon starts to think. "So Owen, you said the guards thought you were the Princess?" "I did overhear in the bazaar that there was a Gaomon princess. Her father was Sultan before the revolution." Domon looks at Owen while holding up the coin. The Gazimon grins from ear to ear. He brushes the blonde patch of fur on his forehead with his paw. "Hey, if the guards think you are really the Princess..."
Domon flicks the coin up in the air before catching it in the pouch. "We can help ourselves to the treasury!" "Domon! That's crazy. You can't expect that plan to work." "Think about it. Owen can pretend to be the Princess. We could be in and out of there before they even know what's up. We could steal enough gold to buy our own house. Maybe purchase a trade cart and live the life of a wealthy merchant." Domon jumps up and extends his paw to Owen. "What do you say, Owen?! Are you ready to make some serious cash?"

Owen eventually accepted the piece of bread. Having flown in to Nubar a considerable way, he was fairly hungry. Stolen bread was still bread after all. Having been offered food from these two, he at once decided that he liked and trusted them. Naive, maybe, but, the Gaomon appreciated kind gestures.
So Willis and Domon were recent arrivals too? Only it seemed that they wanted to earn a living? Hmm. "Understandable. It can be difficult for a digimon to get by in Terminus and Whitewater" he acknowledged.
Also Willis and Domon were brothers? That was interesting as well, Owen didn't know much other digimon with siblings. He had his own sister Cion; then there was Luke and Bellamy, as well as Warg and Kon-chan. But in the greater picture of things, that seemed to be it.
Owen then considered that philosophy - one needed money to get out of the slums. He supposed that was true as well. "There's a great risk in breaking the law in order to do so though" Owen advised. Stealing loaf of bread was something he disapproved of, although then again, all digimon had a right to food. "Why didn't you simply pay for that loaf of bread?" he asked, thinking the gold coins seemed valuable enough. "Are you saving them up for something else?"
Domon then asked if the guards really thought he was the princess. "Er, yes, they seemed to" he admitted. "Apparently the real princess was under house arrest for some reason, presumably she's to be married to some official against her will, hence why she escaped. That isn't right".
At once, Owen decided that he wanted to find out for sure what the situation in Nubar was. Cion would disapprove if he simply decided to leave a troubled town alone when he had the power to make it right. And he thought Hikaru and Logan would be disappointed too.
So if the guards thought he really was the princess, that might give some options. "Er... I'm not going to pretend to be the princess to break into the treasury though" Owen said, sweatdropping a little at that notion. "However, if it meant that I could pretend to be the princess to try and make things better for everyone in Nubar and break the corruption then that might be a better plan for the long term?"
Either way, it seemed quite risky. But, Owen was devoted to the cause of good and so would be willing to make that risk... even if it meant actually pretending to be a princess. He hoped Hikaru wouldn't find out at the least.

Things seemed to be looking up for the two brothers. Domon had gotten away with some free bread, and now they have met a friendly Gaomon who was also new to the area. They didn't know much about Owen, but he seemed to be trustworthy. Domon of course was already looking to rope Owen into his get rich quick schemes. Owen asks a good question, why didn't Domon pay for the bread if he had the coins. "Oh, that's easy. If I spent these coins, well then I wouldn't have them later! This way, I still have some money for the next time we get hungry." "You probably won't be able to pull off that trick again, if word gets around."
Unfortunately for Domon, Owen wasn't about to pose as the Princess to get them into the treasury. However, Owen was alright with impersonating royalty, as long as he could help the citizens of Nubar. Domon is disappointed at first, but he starts thinking about the state of the economy, and all the other Digimon that have resorted to breaking the law just to get by. "Alright, I guess breaking into the treasury is a little extreme. But ya, if you impersonated the Princess, you could probably make some good changes. And we could live in the palace as your mon servants. And suppose I happen to enter the treasury at some point, and when I wasn't looking, my bag was filled up with treasure without me knowing it." "Don't worry about my brother, Owen. I'll keep him in line."
Domon can see it now. Lounging around the palace, eating whatever they want, as much as they want. The Gazimon smirks and rubs his paws together, licking his lips. "Yes, lets get ready and enter the palace." "If we are going to be posing as mon servants, we're going to need some official looking clothes. The guards will be weary of any Gazimon they see for a while." "Not a problem. Once inside, I'll take a uniform to blend in. Haven't you ever seen a movie before, brother? It happens like all the time." "We don't have time to sit around and watch movies! Just try not to draw attention to yourself."

Owen understood, so it seemed that they did intend on saving up for something. Still though, it wasn't right to steal. But, he reasoned, maybe helping them out might result in them not having to steal again?
"Indeed, I think the baker that made that would be very annoyed, so it might be best to avoid him if you're staying here" Owen said.
But, wow, was he seriously considering impersonating the princess? Whew... that certainly wasn't something he thought he'd be doing today. At least he had actually met the princess, and was thankful that she had the same color fur and eyes that he had. He cleared his voice and attempted to speak with her accent. "Does this sound right?" he asked with a refined, pompous accent rather than his standard digimonglish, whatever that was.
And if he succeded? "Of course you could go on as my servants" Owen agreed. He looked at his plain looking robe. "Hmm... I'll say that I've been mingling with the public in disguise to assess their situation" he suggested, still speaking in his "princess" voice. "Then I could tell these "Officials" that run the place that poverty in Nubar is unacceptable and that they should change their policies at once".
Would he be able to do so? Well, at least Owen had his evolutions to back himself up. At least so he hoped. Well, if they were going to do something, they might as well give it a shot.
"So then, shall we proceed?" he asked, trying not to smile too much at his impersonation of the female Gaomon princess.
