It was nice out. The Eastern Timberlands were as temperate as ever and the sunlight that managed to shine through the canopy of trees kept things from getting too cold in the shaded areas. It was a perfect evening. On multiple occasions, Unica suggested that she and Birdie have a picnic in the jungle, much like her parents would do in the local park whenever the weather was favorable. Unfortunately for her, Birdie wasn't the relaxed type. The small pink bird was constantly on the move and the only time she wasn't was when she was sleeping or eating. Other than those two instances, she was always flying, on the go, never stopping. Of course, part of the reason she was eager to get to the Spartan Training Grounds was because she loved the thrill of fighting, and the Training Grounds were an excellent place to go for just such an occasion.
As the two approached the militant campgrounds, Unica waved politely at a few of the tiny baby Digimon who they passed by. Many of the pre-rookie creatures worked on tackling dummies or blowing bubbles at each other, but that wasn't what Birdie was there for. She wanted a fierce battle against another rookie Digimon. That way, she'd really be able to put her skills to the test and she could find out exactly what kind of perks came with having a human companion. The idea of combat and reducing a rival to data made Birdie ecstatic, but she did a decent job at hiding her excitement.
Once they were safely inside the confines of the campgrounds, Birdie stopped walking and turned around to face her tamer. "You stay here," she demanded and the young girl obeyed. Unica removed her backpack and sat atop of it as she watched Birdie flap her wings a few times, lift off the ground, and fly toward the crowd of resting Digimon. As she neared the ground, she let out a mischievous chuckle and a tweet to get the group's attention. "Any of you punks wanna go?" she asked, a playful glare taunting the rookies and daring them to come forward in order to fight her.

It was a day like any other for the digimons in the Training Grounds. Going through their daily routines in hopes of achieving evolution at some point had been a longstanding tradition in this place, and one that was respected. One that probably wouldn't change today. Or ever, probably.
A more recent tradition was about these so-called "Digidestined" bringing their digimons to spar with the camp's inhabitants. Their goal was usually the same, so they were permitted inside. It wasn't like this place was like Eldoradimon or other similar places where humans couldn't trespass. As long as whoever entered the Training Grounds had peaceful intentions, everyone could get in.
Now, taunting an opponent was another story altogether. It usually brought out the cockiest digimons if they were challenged that way. Maybe not the most skilled or anything of the sort, but no fight should be overlooked when facing even the trainees.
Case in point, the Piyomon who currently had issued a challenge to a group of rookies. Most of them seemed to mind their own business, at least until... a ChibiKamemon stepped forward. "Wanna fight, eh?" Her voice was confident. "Very well, I'll be your opponent. Choose the arena."
Given their nature as training grounds, there were many places where they could spar, from the usual plain circle to more interesting scenarios. Which one would Birdie pick?

After challenging the group of Digimon to a duel, none of them replied. A Lucemon and Shoutmon shot her a weary look, but the Gotsumon and Oinkmon continued minding their own business, as if they didn't even hear her. It was only after she followed up with a, "Seriously? None of you babies wanna go?" that the group began to stir. A Cutemon turned and looked ready to fight, though it was a ChibiKamemon who ultimately spoke up, agreeing to the terms and asking which arena they should fight in. It didn't really matter to Birdie where they fought, she just wanted to get started. However, things were done in a certain order around here, and she didn't want to jump the gun and scare the ChibiKamemon off as a result. She had just managed to find an opponent, after all. She looked around, pretending to contemplate her options even though she already knew where she wanted the duel to happen. "How about the boulder garden?" she asked, nodding in the direction of a decently sized field that was almost completely covered in rocks and boulders of varying sizes with hardly any smooth place to stand. She figured she'd have the upper-hand, given the fact that she could fly and wouldn't have to worry about keeping her balance on the rocks. "Or maybe the dunes?" she added, turning her attention back to her opponent.

The turtle-like digimon pondered the options presented. "Dunes or boulders, eh?" Truth was that she didn't have much experience in actual battles on any of those, but that wouldn't be something that should stop her! Another confident smirk as she nodded. "Very well. Let's go to the Boulder Gardens. "Prepare yourself."
ChibiKamemon walked towards the designated arena, excitement readily showing in her features. This would be fun. Five minutes later, they were there, the digimon standing upwards with a challenging expression on her face. The bare bones of the strategy she would employ were already on her head. Now the only thing missing was the execution.
"Ladies first." The digimon said, taunting her enemy with a finger motion as she adopted a battling stance. For what she had heard thus far, the Piyomon seemed to be easily swayed by words. With any luck, she'd get the reaction she was expecting.

A darkness was raging in Birdie. It was a primitive, raw hatred for everything. This urge was a result of her having lived a difficult life on her own. No one was ever there for her. She always had to fend for herself, even against the Champion and Ultimate levels who would try to attack, knowing they had the advantage over her. Time passed, as it always did, and she had gotten sick of being scared. She was tired of running and hiding, followed by the echoed laughter of the heartless Digimon who were stronger than her. They were always stronger than her, and she vowed to do something about it. She would no longer bow to those who threatened to overpower her. She would never again be that weak, timid Puwamon that she once was. She would show them; she would show them all that she wasn't one to be messed with.
There was no way Unica could have known what was going on inside of her partner's mind, however. She believed what Birdie had told her at face value: her Digimon partner wanted to get stronger in order to protect her. Unfortunately, the truth of the matter was that Birdie cared more about becoming stronger and feeling adrenaline course through her digital body than protecting the young human. Certainly Unica was a valuable asset due to her digivice, but becoming a guardian angel was not at the top of Birdie's to-do list. They were here to get strong - that much was true - but their intentions were entirely different.
When the ChibiKamemon agreed to duel at the Boulder Garden, something pulsated in Birdie. An eagerness to fight overwhelmed her and it took everything she had not to attack while the turtle twerp had her back turned. The opponent began heading toward the arena as Birdie returned to her human and ordered the small girl to follow. With a few grumbles in complaint, Unica stood, grabbed her bag, and followed the two Rookies. Birdie didn't wait for the young girl; instead, she went on ahead, flew above the ChibiKamemon, and arrived at the Boulder Garden before anyone else.
Once her rival arrived at the battlefield, Birdie landed on one of the larger rocks which was located off to the side. She watched in silence as the ChibiKamemon made her way onto the field, all the while biting back the buzzing sensation which deafened her and made her only see the opponent. She didn't even notice Unica walking up to the field and finding a nice shaded spot to sit down. As soon as the words, "Ladies first," were uttered by the enemy, Birdie was in the air. She dove down toward the ChibiKamemon, her talons bared and her eyes wild with a manic excitement. She needed to get close before she could unleash her more effective attacks, so she planned on lodging her talons into the enemy's body and letting loose with a Hard Beak attack.

The party had started quite fast! While agile and nimble, there wasn't much refinement on the Piyomon's moves. And an absence of technique that the ChibiKamemon was sure to seize. First, however, she had to defend against the attack coming her way.
Talons and beak could be hard and sharp, but they'd have to do a pretty good impression if they wanted to get through the digimon's shell. And while the process wasn't precisely fast for her to do it at will, she had plenty of time to hide within it before the oncoming attack came into her way.
Birdie would find her attacks colliding with a stationary hard object; she could feel the impact, but the brunt of the damage had been soaked by the hard exterior she had found. Now, she was pretty much in front of a hard, yet stationary object.
What would she do about it?

When Birdie swooped down, talons bared, the ChibiKamemon recoiled into her shell. Upon seeing this, Birdie was struck with an idea. If the shell had holes for the rival Digimon to retreat into then that meant that those holes could be used to attack the hiding ChibiKamemon inside. Brilliant! With a rough collision, Birdie landed on the turtle's shell and peered down where the head hole should have been, but in it's place was a camouflage hat that had rested comfortably upon the ChibiKamemon's head. The stupid hat was blocking the hole! Not a problem - Birdie simply turned toward the arm and leg holes in hope that they had not been covered as well. Unfortunately for her, as she peered down, she found that all the other holes on the shell had been sealed off somehow. Frustration coursed through the Biyomon's body and she gave into her more primal nature. "Hard Beak!" Birdie hollered, driving a long, sharped beak into the side of the shell, but to no avail.
The turtle's cowardice angered Birdie and caused her to lash out in an even more ferocious manner. "Chirping Attack!" she exclaimed while leaping off of the shell and flapping her winds quickly. The air caught in her feathers and was sent forward, growing in intensity until it became a proper gust of wind which blew the rival across the field. Birdie watched as the green shell bounced off of a series of rocks before being lodged firmly between two medium-sized boulders. She swooped down when she saw that the rival had stopped moving and, in a blur, began doing cartwheels in the air. "Spiral Wing!" she cried out, summoning a small tornado that appeared out of nothing. The tornado darted toward the shell, wailing horrifically as it went, and slammed into ChibiKamemon. The wind continued spinning around the turtle for a few seconds before it freed the shell from the rocks and launched it into the air.
When the opponent was roughly a meter above the ground, Birdie once again used her Hard Beak attack, this time on the bottom of the shell with the hope that the underside would be softer. It wasn't. She stopped her barrage of attacks and watched as the shell crashed to the ground below. She waited to see what the ChibiKamemon would do and, for a moment, she wondered if her frenzied attacks had knocked the enemy out. However, it didn't take very long before the shell began to move.

The Piyomon's relentless assault seemed to have been somewhat... uneffective? Against the ChibiKamemon's hard shell, and that was exactly her strategy, even if the various attacks had managed to make a dent on the turtle digimon's armor. She either had to act soon or her opponent would eventually find a way to crack through it, and then... it'd probably not be as fun.
So that's why she decided to move into action; It indeed didn't take long before it moved! As if taking momentum by herself, the ChibiKamemon would begin to spin rapidly as it crashed into the ground. Almost like a car burning tires, a screech-like sound was heard before the enclosed shell launched itself back against the Piyomon as a rapid projectile.
If it took the avian digimon by surprise, the impact could be pretty strong, otherwise, the momentum would just make her pass by a dozen or so meters higher before finally falling into the ground. That didn't sound like the best that could happen.

The crazed look in Birdie's eyes never ceased, even when the ChibiKamemon's shell spun and screeched as it collided with the rocky ground below. What was the turtle doing? Did she think that spinning at the last minute would lessen the impact or was she spinning in hope that if Birdie came in for a follow-up attack then she'd be struck and would have to back off? It would have been a strategic decision if that was, in fact, what the ChibiKamemon was doing. However, the truth was that the rival was maintaining the momentum that she had while falling and was redirecting it in an upward motion. In a blink of an eye, the opponent had launched herself into the air, darting toward Birdie who was still airborne. Birdie was fast, though, and was capable of dodging the incoming attack, but only barely. The speed of the turtle's launch had distorted the air in its ascent and Birdie twirled a few times before she was able to catch herself.
ChibiKamemon's decision to fight back sent a surge of adrenaline through Birdie's body and caused her to lash out with incredible power. It wasn't a calm and collected strength that came from a desire to protect or to have a friendly competition. It was a strength that was primal and dark, a desire to see her opponent fail - and not just fail, to be obliterated, to beg or cry or scream before their final moments where she would stop their suffering once and for all. This beastly power revealed itself as the ChibiKamemon descended back down to the ground with Birdie directly behind, her beak enlarging and glowing as she prepared for a fatal Hard Beak attack which, if her understanding of physics were correct, would break through her rival's defenses. Not only would ChibiKamemon be slamming against the boulders below with astonishing speed, but she'd also be pierced with a series of pecks which would come down on her at almost the same speed.

A miss? Damn, this wouldn't end well, would it? While the shell raced back and forth, the notion that the crash would be the end of the fight began to become more and more apparent. The Piyomon's attack would hit and that would be the end of it.
Nah, of course, it wouldn't! What kind of trainee would be defeated so easily? Even if this would result in a lot of damage to her shell and probably her, she wouldn't be defeated so easily! Not an instant before colliding against, the ChibiKamemon's shell changed in composition almost magically; from hard and though to rubbery and bouncy.
The obvious result was that she rebounded, using the momentum of the fall before charging at the Piyomon again; sure, her shell wasn't nearly as hard now and she was careening head-on against a pretty sharp beak, but she'd have to think twice in order to peck strongly, because she wasn't the only one getting damaged if they collided.
Excitement began to course through the ChibiKamemon. This was getting interesting! And her opponent was proven to be quite capable. She had to be on her guard or she could lose at any moment.

As soon as ChibiKamemon made contact with the ground, her strong and stiff composition shattered away and was replaced with a sort of rubbery, bouncy material. This was unexpected and certainly took Birdie off guard when the opponent rebounded. Of course, Birdie immediately noticed this change, but it was too late to do anything about it. She had been following the descending Digimon so closely that she was unable to get out of the way by the time the rival launched back into the air. The impact was immediate. One second, they were falling through the air; the next, ChibiKamemon was skyrocketing, striking Birdie with her malleable shell and sending the pinky bird flying backwards in a daze. While Birdie's sharpened beak would have penetrated her enemy's softened body, causing some serious damage, the impact had also injured her in the process.
Birdie fell a few feet away, her body slamming against the rocks below. A trill of pain escaped from her beak, but her eyes showed a fiery determination which proved that she would not give up so easily. The ChibiKamemon was falling once again, but Birdie had a strong belief that her opponent would not come barreling down on top of her. The turtle would have to adjust her trajectory in mid-air, which seemed highly unlikely; but, then again, this was a Digimon and not some commonplace animal. Her abilities still weren't fully uncovered. Birdie had been doing the majority of the attacking, so for all she knew her rival could have still had some techniques up her sleeve-- er, shell. Not wanting to give ChibiKamemon the chance to get the upperhand, Birdie rose and began to whistle a cute, hypnotic song which had a devious undertone to it. She was using her Charming Tweet attack (1 post duration, 2 post cooldown) in order to stun the falling enemy.
If the turtle became paralyzed then she would not be able to save herself from the free fall. Not this time. No more redirecting the momentum; no more transforming; she would take the fall and sustain the damage. Of course, Birdie's attack wouldn't last very long and ChibiKamemon would be able to break free of the song's hold in a matter of minutes, so she needed to work fast. After concluding her song and watching as the shell returned to the ground, Birdie prepared a Hard Beak attack. The enemy had dropped her defenses and was now stunned, giving Birdie a perfect opening to do some major damage... provided everything went as planned.

There, direct hit! At least that'd teach the bird to not underestimate her. Well, the Piyomon's beak also had managed to open a wound on the digimon's shell, and that made impossible for her to use the defensive tactics she had used before but... she'd manage.
Losing that easily would be a shame, right? Or... that's what she thought at first. Soon enough, the melodious tweeting entered her ears, and her mind went blank. This wasn't good, was it?
The conclusion was obvious; the digimon would careen and crash directly into the hard floor, and a pained yelp would soon follow. "Owww." Yeah, she wasn't in the best situation right now, but at least the fall had broken the spell, even if at a pretty high cost; truth was that she was temporarily stunned, and couldn't really see a thing given the cloud of dust that had been kicked up after her fall.
Where was her opponent? She had to be ready in case she continued her assault.

Yes! Perfect! The plan was coming together! It was admittedly a bit strange for Birdie to have to strategize, but it felt nice when things fell into place. Usually, she would bombard the enemy with a relentless string of attacks - which was exactly what she had tried to do at the beginning of the fight, but that approach quickly proved to be useless. After letting rage blind her and being struck by the ChibiKamemon, she was forced to take a step back and think before acting. What attacks would work best to subdue the opponent now? What attacks should she follow up with? It was a mindset that Birdie wasn't used to in battle, but it was paying off. In fact, her technique usually meant that she had no need for her Charming Tweet attack, so that really spoke volumes about her rival.
Birdie didn't bother wondering if the impact of the fall had snapped ChibiKamemon out of the trance. She saw the turtle smash against the ground with a squeal of pain before laying there, not moving. Birdie didn't wait a second longer to make her move. She dove in with her beak elonged, sharpened, and glowing ferociously. "Hard Beak!" she exclaimed seconds before her peak pierced through ChibiKamemon's soft shell - okay, perhaps the shell wasn't nessicarily soft, but it was must easier to penetrate than the steely defense the opponent had previously. She felt her beak make contact but she continued going, spearing her enemy's body before pulling away and swinging her beak again, repeating the process. She did this over and over again, rapidly, striking multiple times within a single second, drilling farther into the rival's body like a woodpecker with a tree. She wasn't letting up.
Unica had managed to approach the arena by this time and had spotted the nice turtle careening downward before crashing into the ground, causing a plume of dirt to lift around the two battling Digimon. The viciousness of the fight caused the young girl's stomach to turn into knots. It was like watching two doggies fight over a toy, scarling and snapping their teeth together as they threatened to attack. Her parents would always say that the doggies were playing, but it always made her feel sad anyway. Why couldn't they just giggle and smile like humans do when they're playing? Regardless, she told herself that Birdie and the turtle were "just playing." She stepped nearer to the arena and watched as her partner mercilessly drilled into her helpless opponent. Blue pixels which shimmered with a green and purple rose slowly from ChibiKamemon's body and disappeared into the air. Although Unica didn't know what it was, she knew that it wasn't anything good. Even if they were just playing, she didn't like it and she didn't wanted to see any more. "Birdie! Stop it!" Unica cried out with balled hands and a tightness rising in her chest, but her partner couldn't seem to hear.

It hurt. Maaaaan, it hurt a lot. Birdie's sharp beak managed to penetrate her defenses pretty easily, and now the ChibiKamemon was dazed, in pain and not very up to do much fighting anymore.
"Fi...ne. Stop already." Those words came off in a raspy, somewhat dizzy voice. ChibiKamemon wasn't sure anymore, but her consciousness was fleeing. "I... g-give up."
Her words apparently weren't reaching her opponent, who just continued her relentless assault and didn't show any signs of stopping. Was this the end? ChibiKamemon never imagined that something as trivial and simple as sparring could end like this.
Eventually, she just collapsed into a heap on the floor, unsure if she was still alive or not, but definitely knowing that she would probably not be soon enough.
Meanwhile, the meager spectators of the short, yet intense fight were all gazing with horror at Birdie's murderous streak, not sure on how to react to the situation unfolding in front of them. Why nobody was intervening?

"Stop, Birdie!" Unica screamed again as the turtle went limp and it began slipping from consciousness. The young human could see the defenseless creature's mouth moving, but she was too far away from the action to hear what was being said. Her fruitless attempts at screaming for her partner to stop were drowned out by the small crowd of Digimon who had begun to gather and murmur amongst themselves. Unica whipped her head around and let out a gasp as small puffballs and tiny dinosaur-looking critters looked on in horror and shock. Why weren't they doing anything? Something wasn't right. Couldn't they see it? However, just as she was about to speak her mind, she heard quiet voices say, "We'd better get DinoHumon," followed by, "She won't last that long. We need to deal with it now." Although Unica couldn't locate who was speaking, a terrible pang of grief surged through her body and she feared that whatever was happening to ChibiKamemon would happen to Birdie. "No!" Unica sobbed, tears beginning to appear in her eyes.
Hurriedly, she turned back around and began climbing up one of the smallest boulders -- or, trying to. She wasn't big or strong enough to climb up the rock's face without slipping back down to the ground, but she was determined. She was Birdie's partner and that meant that she was responsible for Birdie's actions, right? It was the same as when she would get in trouble and her parents would be the ones who would get the brunt of the blame. They were responsible for teaching Unica what was right and wrong, and she was responsible for teaching Birdie; nevermind the fact that Birdie had been alive nearly twice as long as the young girl and had no sort of parent-child relationship with her tamer. Perhaps this was the reason Birdie never ceased up on her attacks, even as Unica got closer, screaming out all the while.
