Eva kept her focus mainly on the road. She wasn't entirely sure exactly how to explain the things K was asking. It seemed that the other Renamon wasn't doing too well though. Travel sick perhaps? She wasn't sure, perhaps this person had never even been in a car like this. That said, it didn't happen on the train ride before, but, at that moment the two of them had far bigger threats to worry about than just feeling a little queasy while travelling.
The cyborg had noticed K looking at her hands again. She didn't pay it too much mind. Honestly the idea of having those claw things was just as alien to Eva, despite that being the norm for her kind. She went for another gear shift on the six speed box, switching to a higher gear as the road straightened out to set the engine to a more efficient cruise.
"...You say.. Designed?"
"...What do you mean? If you don't mind me asking?"
Eva wasn't entirely sure what K meant by that question. Of course machinery was designed. Very damn carefully and precisely in this case considering it was meant to directly plug into someone's nervous system to be controlled like any other natural limb.
"Designed? Well. Yes, my cybernetics were designed and built in the human world by humans. In a city called "London", to be more specific. As I said, they were meant to function in human combat situations, and they were initially meant to be fitted to a human, which is why my arms and legs are shaped like, well, a human's."
She paused, and sighed.
"It probably seems pretty strange to you. I can assure you, it feels just as strange to me seeing it from the other side. I have no "natural" digimon "moves". All my abilities hinge on either my training, experience or my cybernetics themselves. I mean hell, the way you can just change your physical form? To me that's an utterly alien concept."

K wasn't sure how to feel about this, she felt somewhat out of place but she also felt like... Interacting with Eva was like seeing herself in a completely different light. The other renamon was absolutely different, utterly so. Sure the baseline was there but then there was so much of everything else that she just couldn't understand. Or rather just had a harder time doing so.
So these cybernetics were designed by humans? Meant for humans? Then why were they on a digimon? Where was this London place? She had a feeling that she should avoid it if this was a possible outcome of going there.
The renamon sat there quietly, her ears flicking a bit as the other continued after sighing. Sure it was strange, and she could understand why the digital world felt strange to this other renamon. But when they said that they had no natural moves K found herself blinking owlishly.
"It's all very strange on both halves, certainly something you wouldn't expect to see. I just can't help but wonder why put them on a digimon if they were designed for a human. Wouldn't it make more sense to put them on a human instead?"
She'd scratch her head a small frown creasing her lips.
"It's like looking in a mirror.. Kind of funny."
She'd snort and lean back rubbing her muzzle again.
"we're both strange to one another, but in the end. We're still both renamon."

"It's all very strange on both halves, certainly something you wouldn't expect to see. I just can't help but wonder why put them on a digimon if they were designed for a human. Wouldn't it make more sense to put them on a human instead?"
Eva shook her head. "That's what I thought too at first, but, there are more factors at play here. Firstly, human experimentation is for the most part illegal. There are exceptions, but, nothing you could really get something like this around. Secondly, the difficulty of it. Humans understand code. They understand computers. They make those all the time, but, in many areas what makes their own bodies tick is more or less an unknown. That's why they couldn't properly graft it to a human's nervous system without extensive human experimentation, but, with some comparatively simple code "tweaks" and some more... physical methods..." She shuddered, zoning out for a second. Fortunately, it seemed she still had a good enough grasp on watching the road and keeping the two of them safe as her memories wandered off back to the time she didn't even know that the digital world existed. The sound of the saws, the crunching of bone, nearly as vivid in her mind now as it was even at the very moment the blade cut into her.
They didn't even use anaesthetic. Why would you, when all you thought you were operating on was a computer construct? A simulation, given form. She blinked a couple of times, taking a few deep breaths, regaining her composure. Focus. Focus...
"I-it was just a case of... making my body link to the equipment they already had constructed. As a proof of concept. To show that the systems work. But..."
Eva paused again, trying to figure out the best way of saying this. How would she even say this? How do you put this into words? She steeled herself, deciding "screw it". Deciding that finally she was just going to come straight out with it.
"B-but they don't. Not perfectly. Now the only things keeping me alive, the cybernetics, are also slowly killing me. I... I don't know how much longer I have."

K listened quietly, her ears flicking to the side so she could listen if not a little bit better. So humans couldn't take these items and put them on themselves without issues? That wasn't surprising, the items in question likely would be difficult to deal with... She couldn't help but feel a little sorry for eva having to deal with such a burden. Wasn't there something she could do to fix it?
"I.. suppose that makes sense. A little... strange though."
She'd frown slowly, considering what eva had said. She couldn't imagine what they meant by physical methods; code tweaks on the other hand she could somewhat understand? She could tell that it was hard to talk about; the soft stutter that the other had made K realize that this was a hard subject to talk about. She should of been more sensitive about it.
When the other trailed off, K would want to say something but was unsure how to say it or even inquire about it. How would you even go about removing things like that? The cybernetics were very extensive weren't they? She wasn't expecting what was next however, she stiffened and turned to look at eva.
"...I see... There's got to be something you can do about it though right...? Most digimon come back after they die though, so I imagine you'd be the same?"

"I.. suppose that makes sense. A little... strange though."
Eva shrugged, still trying to calm herself down. She momentarily distracted herself, looking at the map on the centre console trying to pin down the location. K was right. It was a little strange, but, to her at least it wasn't anywhere near as strange as the digital world itself.
"Humans are a strange species. They vary greatly in mindset and personality but one thing that links a great deal of them together is curiosity. The human mind will almost always strive to discover the unknown, either to improve their own lives, or just for the sake of discovering something new. In my case, as far as I can tell... They were so excited with the possibilities that they didn't look into it as deeply as they should have."
This conversation had certainly put a downer on things in the car. Hell, with this topic Eva likely needed that drink more than ever.
"...I see... There's got to be something you can do about it though right...? Most digimon come back after they die though, so I imagine you'd be the same?"
She sadly shook her head. Death was a concept even more incomprehensible to most digimon minds than it was to the human one, but, it was something Eva had learnt to accept. Learnt to come to terms with. Nothing lasts forever. Entropy always wins in the end in regards to all things human. Eventually no doubt, to all things digimon too eventually.
"There is nothing. I'm not sure even how long I have. It could be a couple of years, it could be a decade. I'm sure you noticed how your healing moves had less impact on me, correct? The modifications have altered and destroyed many parts of my data, corrupted others, outright removed some more. I'm no longer..."
Eva paused, a tear rolling down her cheek. She quickly tried to wipe it away, trying to regain her composure. She couldn't let herself feel like this. Couldn't let herself *look* like this. Especially not in front of someone else.
"No longer a complete digimon."

K placed her hands quietly on her legs, blinking slowly as she thought things through still. Eva was right, humans were a strange species. One that she barely understood much less know anything about. She knew where they vaguely came from as well as the sort of places they lived in. Eva spoke of them like someone that knew of them greatly; so she would have to trust her view on them.
"It sounds like they are better at hindsight than foresight if that is the case. Frustrating in it's entirity. But then again who isn't like that these days?"
She'd chuckle softly and sigh shaking her head slowly.
"I think there was something about curiosity and cats.. I don't know it was kind of a wierd metaphor.
K looked shocked when Eva shook her head; she wouldn't come back? Or that there wasn't anything they could do about it? What was she supposed to say that? She'd nod firmly however when the other mentioned the healing abilities had less of an impact. It wasn't a surprise, it was... Very weak in comparison to what others had.
K felt rather bad for bringing this up now, her face splitting in a soft frown. There was some remorse on her face of course. The other spoke in such a manner where it just simply made her flinch, she went from feeling bad to feeling worse about it than she thought she would. So she did the only thing she could do about it; be supportive. Be friendly. Simply be there. Unsure if eva would react in a positive or negative manner, she'd gently place a hand on her shoulder.
"There may be parts of you missing, replaced by Human interventions. But at the end of the day, you are still you. There will only be one of you, which is beyond unfortunate as I am sure you have much you could bring to the digital world. In fact I'm fairly certain you have much you could bring to both. A year, a decade, a century..."
There was a brief pause and K sighed.
"Regardless of how long you have left, I'm sure you will make the best of it."

She nodded at K's assessment, and the comment of curiosity killing the cat. Although in the case of humanity, curiosity sometimes led to nuclear missiles, but, it also led to a man stepping out onto the moon. It lead to great innovations in mechanical and electrical engineering, but, it also led to engines of war. The digimon remained silent, contemplating on that for a moment until she was brought back by a hand on the shoulder.
Much like the rest of her arm, Eva's shoulder was very much synthetic. The artificial muscles, which on this section of the limb had very minimal carbon fibre casing over it to facilitate freer movement, had a strange almost hard rubber like feeling to them, with a slight feeling of warmth from the movements of driving.
The digimon wasn't exactly sure how to respond to that. Apart from continuing to try and hold back the flood of tears of course, even though that wasn't helping too much. It was fairly obvious to see.
"Regardless of how long you have left, I'm sure you will make the best of it."
"T-that's the i-idea. What I'm trying to do."
It was just at that point that the buildings of the small town started to hove into view. Or at least, what was left of them. Mostly burnt cinders with just a badly damaged stone hall at its centre, less ravaged by the flames that seemingly burnt out days, weeks, or perhaps even a month ago.
"Is.. this the place?"
She pulled the car up, coming to a stop to get out and take a better look around, her cybernetic eyes clicking almost inaudibly as the cyborg switched through the multiple vision modes, thermal, IR, night vision, trying to pick up any sign of activity, any survivors.

Touching Eva's shoulder certainly felt strange in comparison to the flesh and such that she was used to dealing with. But once again it was something she must get used to if she was to interact with this other renamon. She'd give them a small smile, she couldn't do much to help this person now. She didn't have much in the way of advice past what she said.
There wasn't much she could say to what Eva claimed. So she'd nod and remove her hand from the other's shoulder. Her eyes widened however when the town came into view. Her jaw dropped slightly and the renamon almost flat out panicked.
"This isn't... right..."
When the car stopped the renamon quickly got out and looked around almost frantically. Her head turning this way and that. She quickly lost control of what she had done before. Her form shuttering and shifting back up to the Shutmon she had been earlier. It was easy to see that the Innkeeper was surprised.
"...My inn! My.. Home..."
The digimon ran around a corner and stopped. Her form motionless as she was greeted with the gutted view of her inn. And every other building this town had to offer. Other than the damaged stone hall; there wasn't a single whole building.
"......"
K simply stood there, staring at what looked to be the wreckage of a place she called home.

"What the hell happened here?"
Eva looked around at the carnage. Fire. That was obvious. Natural? A forest fire perhaps? No. Only the trees in the local vicinity were torched, the ones further out were just fine suggesting that the fire must have started in the village. Electrical fire? She switched through vision modes, trying to pick out any sparking, any heat source, anything that could still be shorting out. A useless effort, it there was power here it was either already disconnected or rendered nonfunctional.
Looking around systematically through the buildings though, she did pick up on a couple of things. Pockmarks in the ground. Grenades? Small mortars? Burn marks around them. Incendiary. But there were no signs of shell or grenade fragments, let alone anything else like shell casings, ejected magazines or the like. Not even broken bottles from perhaps Molotov cocktails being thrown.
It was at that point her search led her to the large stone hall. Again, more impacts, however this seemed just as peculiar. The size of these blast marks suggested at that shells at least 50mm in size were being fired, yet, the stones weren't penetrated. The door was even more peculiar. The large wooden entrance was half broken down, but, not evidently not by a ram or with explosives, the logical option as she would think, but instead with what seemed to be some sort of slashing weapon. As if someone had cut into a piece of balsa wood with a large knife. This wasn't exactly a thin door either, it was a big grand thing. Oak, perhaps, if Eva were to hazard a guess regarding the materials used.
Just as she approached it to take a closer look, her boot touched against something hard underfoot, beneath the ash. She kneeled down, brushing away the debris to reveal... what seemed to be some sort of mid medieval period sword. A "bastard" sword to be more specific, otherwise known as a "hand and a half" sword. Evidence perhaps? Could this lead to some sort of identification of the attackers? She looked it over, brushing it off before holding it in her hands. The sword remained well, a sword. Not reacting at all to her physiology in the slightest. It felt balanced properly at least, like this was an actual functional weapon, but, this type of blade being here raised more questions than it answered.
OBJECT: SWORD. TWO HANDED.
COMPOSITION: UNKNOWN
STYLE: MID TO LATE MEDIEVAL PERIOD
MASS: 5 KG
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: UNKNOWN
"I found a weapon k. Seem familiar to you? From what I know, humans used this type of sword in the mid to late medieval period. 1200s to 1500s. Could be English, German, Italian, French? I have no idea, many nations in Earth's history used this sort of design."

"I.. D-don't know."
K looked baffled, she stared blankly at the surrounding area that had been her home. There was a fire, there was no building that was left completely untouched so she couldn't say for certain where it had started or if anyone had made it out. She took a step forward putting her hand against the wilted wood.
She growled in irritation and felt her fur curl. Her ears flattened against her head and she felt anger slice through her like a knife. She frankly didn't know what to think of this, what had transpired was beyond her. While Eva continued to look around the place; K was just standing there quietly. She sighed massively and rubbed her temples.
She could feel the anger welling up and this place.. well it wasn't safe anymore and it wasn't a place she could serve drinks. She'd bite her lip bitterly when she felt a peculiar energy well up in her heart. It was unlike anything she had felt before but she had to make sure to fight against it for the time being. When eva spoke she flinched visibly, gazing back at the other renamon with a soft shake of the head.
"....No it looks like any other sword to me.. I.. I don't know many earth periods either... Why would a digimon even have a sword from the human world in the first place?"
The renamon felt that energy push and she grunted, putting a hand to her head. She felt another migraine start. This one was impossibly deep; it hurt something more than the others as she was distinctly reminded of something far in her past. Something that she couldn't explain.
"Ugh... This isn't.. good at all..."

Eva continued looking around, her eye protection at least partially deflecting against a rush of dust and ash filled wind as she looked around. There were just too many things that did not match up in her mind. A medieval era sword that scanned up as "composition unknown", suggesting that it was made from some sort of other material apart from just high carbon steel, and the fact that it was a sword to begin with. Why did they not just emulate the designs of a more modern piece of equipment?
"....No it looks like any other sword to me.. I.. I don't know many earth periods either... Why would a digimon even have a sword from the human world in the first place?"
"I'm not sure if it is from the human world. It seems to be just a copy. I can usually tell what things are made of, but, this is coming up with nothing. If they were looking to get weaponry from the human world, well, we wouldn't be seeing swords. We would be seeing rifles, artillery pieces, vehicles, unless they had been saving these for over five hundred years which well, makes no sense either. It does tell us one thing though..."
She said, examining the blade and giving it a few test swings. It... looked like a sword. It felt like a sword. This felt like a dead end. "Whoever attacked this place, they were bipedal and about our size. Probably a little bigger." It was at roughly this point where Eva noticed K seemingly having some sort of migraine. Asking "are you okay" though would be stupid. How the hell could anyone be okay right now? K especially, considering that this was her town and her inn.
Instead Eva's attention turned to more intact hall. Perhaps there would be more evidence there? The thing was already halfway open, hanging ominously ajar, its splintered wood like rows of razor sharp teeth in the maw of a powerful beast as her HUD started to ping potential "threats", each one turning out to be just nothing. The digimon stopped for a moment, taking a moment as she took a few deep breaths and activated night vision as she slowly walked inside, rifle at the ready..

K wasn't sure what she was supposed to do at this point; she felt anger so vigoursly but had no where to point it. She just had this friend here that was trying to help her and even they seemed to be struggling to do so past looking for clues. She could feel the migraine slowly get worse; this was something like when she digivolved into shutmon.. but at least a thousand times more in intensity. Placing a hand on her muzzle she'd close her eyes and let out a slow but somewhat pained breath.
"Most digimon rely on their own means to do things, I wouldn't be surprised if they were made of metal from some mountain or mine I'm unaware of. It's possible these are just left overs from attacks too.. There's so many possibilities that I can't say for certain."
Every word felt grating, every word hurt to say. She felt that pain resounding in her chest as she could tell that energy refused to die down. She was gripping her hands so tightly that she could feel her claws dig into her skin.
"...That leaves.. Dozens if not hundreds of digimon.. Ugh..."
She'd move to follow after the other renamon, stumbling at first but seemingly fine after a step or two. Though she seemed much less at the ready; but that certainly had to be a lie with what she was witnessing.
"They must of taken shelter in here..."
She'd murmur softly shaking her head slowly; she doubted that the inside was going to be much better than the outside....

"My god."
Eva lowered her rifle. She fell silent, as silent and still as the room itself. No words coming, no further investigation, but what could be said here? What further clues were there to gather when the grizzly evidence was so plain for anyone with eyes to see, even through the ash and darkness. Outlines. Shapes of digimon, tens, no, hundreds of people hiding in terror from the maelstromn of death outside until it too found them etched upon the smoke blackened walls almost as if painted on with some sort of stencil.
Many lives were lost here. Innocent lives lost here pointlessly, brutally, and with no recourse.
Silent.
Still.
Just a few shafts of pale moonlight coming through the holes in the ruined roof, shining upon a gargantuan blade in the centre, stuck deep into the ground, the dust and ash in the air dancing in the beam, the silence only occasionally interrupted by the beeping of another "ghost" on Eva's sensors giving a phantom warning of a threat before vanishing, and the occasional creaking and groaning of the damaged structure.

Silence.
Dead silence is what came this place; and it's what came from her. She stood there, in the town center, eyes wide and mouth agape in a mix of surprise... frustration and anger. Her hands curled into fists and she felt her migraine practically triple in intensity. It was blistering and it made the renamon almost gag in pain.
A hand came up to her head and she could feel tears streaming unbidden.. unstopped down her face. Her people died here, were digitized here. Were they ever going to come back? or whomever had done this.. had they absorbed them.
The dead silence was broken by a soft, but almost certain crackle of energy that flickered from her hand across her chest and around her head. Like something you would expect to see from digivolution. Or at least the beckonings of it. It was obvious she was holding herself back something fierce, and whatever it was going to be was much stronger than her Shutmon self.
K had to tear herself away from the scene and step outside, hands clenching around her head as the migraine continued to get worse.. and worse.. and worse. All she could feel at the moment was this splitting pressure in her skull and an anger so intense that it threatened to block out her reasoning. She bit back the tears, the anger and some measure of the pain. Exhibiting some great control; but her voice wasn't her own when she spoke. It was laced with power; laced with frustrations that she couldn't voice properly. It sounded hollow in comparison to her regular warmth that she put forward.
"They. Didn't even fight back. They couldn't."

Eva walked up to the gigantic weapon stuck into the ground at the centre of the room. Nothing made sense, the huge blade, far too large for any normal creature to wield stuck at least a foot deep into the solid stone foundations of the hall. Even with the full suite of NanoWerx industries cybernetics, some of the most advanced technology the human world could muster, she was fairly certain that even she couldn't lift it, even if it wasn't buried into the floor. Its very appearance too, seemed to mess with both her natural head, and her synthetic sensors. The light did not simply fall upon it like it normally would. Instead it seemed to almost absorb it into its strange runic carvings which despite the battle being long over, still glowed with a soft, pulsing crimson light.
She found herself almost entranced by the thing, an element of smooth perfection amidst chaos as coal black as the night sky or the ash coated walls. She reached out, touching the flat side of the overly wide weapon. The thing felt like ice, its cold surface almost frictionless even against even the small rubber grips that made up her hand's pale imitation of human fingertips.
Just what was this? It felt unreal. Alien. Once again this was yet another of the things that just didn't match up. What was it made out of? What could have used it or even held it? She was too busy pondering the possibilities that she didn't even notice K walk out of the building.
"They. Didn't even fight back. They couldn't."
That sounded like K but, something was off. Even more off than this entire situation. She walked out of the building, shaking her head at the carnage and the strange feeling that flowed over her from the sword, trying to ignore the phantom sensor readings dancing all over her tacmap. "We'll find the wankers that did this K. We'll find them and make them pay for every damn shot fired."
