A Nightmare Dressed Like A Daydream (Viktor/Cas)[complete]

Viktor shook his head again, "Water, please."
He didn't mind sweet tea, or tea in general. But he preferred water over every other beverage simply because it didn't add or take away. It was simply water. More over, he continued to watch Cas as she served the food, this time doing both examining her and admiring her. If she could tell the difference, he'd be in for it then.
He leaned back as she spoke of the Yakuza, while non-Japanese did get caught up in the syndicate, their numbers were small and they hardly existed. Most Yakuza were Japanese and finding otherwise was akin to finding a four leaf clover! He didn't bother correcting or debating it, he didn't have the energy and instead only nodded as she placed the plate down and slid it to him, then motioned to the Silverware drawer. He pushed off the table and walked over, pulling two forks and two knives, then sliding a set to her as he cut the meat open and examined it. As if he was chef inspecting the meal of one of his cooks. He then took a bite and leaned back, taking a moment to enjoy the flavors it offered.
He spoke after he took a swig of water to wash down the chicken. White meat was naturally dry, and often used in many Italian dishes, which is why water was such a viable option;
"I appreciate this. I'll repay you with a meal. Have you ever heard of Flat Top? There's two locations in Tokyo and one is just a Subway ride away."
He cut another piece and stuck it in his mouth, chewing thoroughly as he looked up, watching carefully again! It wasn't so much a date as it was more to pay her back for being so kind and feeding him! What better way than a rather expensive restaurant that he owned. Of course, he wasn't going to tell her that!

Filling a second glass with water she set the two glasses down side by side as she drew the now toasted bread out of the oven. Setting it upon a plate she scooped her own chicken up with a spatula, layered the hot tomato sauce over it and dropped another slice of cheese on hers to let it melt and stick the pieces of bread together like glue. Satisfied with her meal she set it next to Viktors as she went about turning off the oven and stove top and circled around to take her place at the bar next to him. If she noticed him watching her she didn't let on, but he could catch her own gaze upon him every so often quiet and assessing.
"I've heard of Flat Top, but never had much reason or time to try it in the states. There wasn't a location near where I lived and I was a bit too busy in school to do much getting out and about." She explained with a light shrug turning is offer over in her mind even as she took a bit of her sandwich with a happy hum at the taste.
"I suppose I wouldn't mind going with you sometime. Food is always better with company." Cas admitted drawing her phone out of her pocket as she flipped to her number and set the device between them for him to inspect.
"That's my personal cell. If you call or text that I'll know it's social. If you use the number posted on the front window of the clinic I'll know you're in need of medical aid. I respond to texts better as I may not always have my hands free to answer, but if you do call leave a message and I'll get back to you fairly promptly." She explained nodding down at the little illuminated screen.

Well, Viktor figured he’d get a contact in someway from her. Given she was a doctor and a rather renown one at that. But, more importantly, she gave him her social number! Viktor supposed there’s nothing wrong with mixing business and pleasure, at least in this case. He’d chuckle and add her to his contacts, then lean back as he finished his plate;
”So Cas, what brings you to Japan? Why not stay in your homeland?”
The question was innocent. Viktor had no clue of her past or the reasons she left. Just that she was a country girl in the middle of a city far away from home. Or at least, that’s what he told himself about her in his head. Which warranted a chuckle.
No doubt by now she’d notice his... ‘fox’ features of the pointier canines, the ice ghostly blue eyes or even the very rare gold strand of hair he had on the sides of his head. No doubt she’d never seen that as a doctor, and truthfully? He didn’t have an explanation for them! But if she asked, he’d at least tell her something. There was no way she’d believe the truth.
Would she?

Cas had indeed noticed his oddities, but rubbing elbows often with 'street samurai' as the Yakuza liked to tote themselves as she had been exposed to all manner of strange body modifications and appearances in an attempt to make themselves look more threatening. From hair dye, to contacts, to dental alterations there was nothing about Viktor's appearance Cas couldn't easily justify as simple cosmetic applications and thus she left the topic be. Knowing all too well how many people were rather touchy about their fashion choices.
That didn't however, stop her eyes from occasionally lingering on the point of his fangs as she quietly munched on her own food. She couldn't wolf down a meal at nearly the rate her companion could, but she made a good try at finishing her sandwich and whatever she didn't eat she carefully wrapped up and stored in her fridge for later.
"Ah well," She murmured fetching their plates as she carefully rinsed them off in the sink. "Why does anyone leave their homeland really? Better opportunity mostly." She explained scrubbing away at the plates as she carefully set them in the dishwasher to run later. Leaning against the counter she reached out to snag her glass of iced tea and sipping it slowly considered his question.
"I wanted to travel a bit and a research grant cropped up for work on a topic I'm interested in here in Shibuya. It's not much of a grant mind you, but I'm working on my doctorate thesis in Natural biology and the sciences aren't spoiled for money in America." Cas added with a shrug as she eyed her little flat. It wasn't much, but it was hers and she was proud of what she had built here and the reputation she had gained for good or for ill.
"So I called in all the favors I was owed, pulled up roots and decided I was going to make something of myself. This place came up cheap and while the neighborhood is rough it's nothing I'm not accustom to and I'm smart enough to know I'm worth more alive then dead to my neighbors." She murmured letting her eyes drift back to Viktor as she offered him a slim amused smile.
"What about you? If you're not with a criminal syndicate then you're either a private contract or government? What got you roaming the world like this?" She asked with a subtle cant of her head that sent her hair trailing about her face like a soft corona.

Many did leave their homeland for opportunity, but it was more to go TO America, rather than leave it. So much so that he lived in America, and technically, he was an American citizen. Still, the question about him returned and he was forced to think about himself, he simply told her the truth:
”Affiliate of a government agency. Let’s just say... I’m a delivery man of sorts.”
He knew he was being vague, he didn’t go around telling people that he killed others for a living. Moreover, he never told them the manner in which he did it. He might have been an accomplished marksman, but the work of removing someone at the whim of an agency made him a Jack-of-all-trades. He could make poisons, a makeshift bomb, he knew essentially where to push a blade in someone to make them expire instantly.
Now, he hadn’t taken a contact in that manner in years. His focus was more on the digital world and it’s problems. Even now, he was forced to think and move differently, moreover, he had to be twice as careful not to infect if Genesis appeared. Which he doubted she would:
”So... have you seen anything odd? Perhaps a strange animal or creature of late?”
He was careful to ask, simply because he didn’t want her to think he was going to off her simply because she knew of the existence of Digimon. He simply wanted to know if she was aware of them.

His answer in terms of his employment earned an ungainly snort of laughter from the woman who doubled over for a moment before straightening as she wiped a few tears from her eyes grinning at him as she shook her head. "Yeah right what do you deliver? Pain?" She quipped prodding at him playfully with her words as she let her gaze drag skeptically over his outfit before meeting his eyes with an arched brow that said she didn't buy his bullshit for a single second.
Still his own prying question seemed to silence her mirth as she canted her head to one side considering his words with care. "You'd have to be more specific. I'm a natural biologist as well as a vet and my main area of research is that of adaptation and mutation of animals in the face outside influences and human incursion and such. Given the low grade radioactive leak from the tsunami a few years back and the various chemical and by-products businesses so often dump I see a lot of creature birth defects and unusual things." She explained keep her tone level and casual. She couldn't imagine why some random faceless government agency might send an agent to work his way into her good graces for her research, but it always paid to be a little cautious.
"Why do you ask?" She questioned taking a slow sip of her tea.

That would explain why she might overlook Digimon. Chalk it up to mutations and call it a day. But why DID he ask? Even he didn’t have a question for that. Perhaps it was because he felt he needed to help her if she was aware of the Digital World. Some agencies would very much silence those who could spread the truth. Others tagged them as those who wear tin foil as head ware.
He gave a warm smile as he leaned back, watching her again;
”You said you were a doctor, and you came here for the research. Just a curious question is all.”
He rolled his neck, popping his vertebrae with each turn. He’d then look at his Digivice again and watch as it went off a fifth time. He shook his head and retrieved it, then pressed a few buttons on its face and sides before the lit screen went dark. He sighed and pocketed his device, then thought more about her comment earlier. About his career.
”Technically, I’m a business owner. But the wetwork is a side gig more than anything now. Not obligated or under contract by anyone.”
He shrugged and sighed as the device went off again. He produced it from his pocket yet again and checked it, then shook his head. He was careful not to show the screen, as the background picture on the device was that of his partner Genesis, his Renamon counterpart. But as bad as that was, his phone was riddled with photos she took with it. Of her, of him, things in the digital world. He never got a chance to delete them. And at the same time... he didn’t want to. It held memories. Things he could have anymore. A simpler time.
But Cas would have a hard time getting into it without his consent, so he wasn’t too worried about that. Still... something about her warranted a bit of trust. Perhaps it was her softer features or angelic like face. Perhaps it was the fact that she literally stitched him up with little in the way of a reward. Either way, he’d only hope she didn’t see the background on his digivice, lest he have a lot more explaining to do.

"True...I did say that." Cas murmured after a moment her face slowly relaxing from the emotionless mask she wore to something more natural as she gave him and understanding nod. "Sorry it's just most people when they hear research they're more interested in how they can exploit it rather then in actually learning anything and helping the world." She explained sipping at her tea and not in the least surprised when he confirmed there was a cold-blooded killer sitting in her living room with her. Not that she hadn't had more then a few unusual patients come through her doors.
"Well that does explain why someone would want to beat you half to death. You make a lot of enemies in that business." She joked before nodding to the little device in his hand with a frown.
"Never shuts up does it? Do you need to take any of those? I shan't keep you longer then needed. If anyone understands that work never rests it would be myself." Cas quipped with a curious tilt of her head eyeing the digivice, but unable to see the screen or what all the fuss was about.

Viktor shrugged and stowed the digivice back into his bag, leaning back and placing an arm behind the backrest of the chair; "Can't have enemies if they don't see your face. No-one I've ever hunted has learned of me... This was something else and will require an investigation."He stroked his full beard quizzically as he spoke. Clear he was already working leads in his head. Even through his slight Eastern European accent, he managed to convey his words as though he had been speaking English his entire life. But it still left him open for teasing on her end. Which he grew to like as the day went on. He nodded solemnly as he looked at the device again. As if opening it only to fulfill a whim or remember something. Cas might have found that odd as he definitely didn't come off as the sentimental type. He looked at the empty plate then back to her, giving a smile; "I'll call you once I get some open seats. Flat Top does require a bit of preparation, as I am you are aware." He gave a wink, stowing the device for the final time. He wasn't lying about the preparations. He was the owner, but he didn't want to surprise his managers or take up precious time for patrons. He still had to make money, however small. He slung his bag over his shoulder and gave another nod; "Thank you again. I'll text you when I reach my destination, doc. So you know your hard work wasn't all for nothing."He simply walked across the street and stand, smiling again to the petite girl on the otherside. If she was watching, she'd see him standing at the nearby stoplight, as if waiting for the light. Then, a large vehicle would pass for a split second. Even if she concentrated, Viktor was no where to be found. Seemingly vanished into thin air. Truly, an indication of his skill on their previous subject. A few hours later, Cas would get a text from him with three simple words; "Made it. Thanks." Not much for words, he was.

"I'm afraid I wouldn't know about Flat Top, but I'm sure I'll learn." She joked returning his playful wink with one of her own as she collected their plates and rinsed them in the sink sensing that his time in her company was coming to it's end. Still despite their unexpected meeting Cas had found the man to be a rather good companion and more surprisingly found herself saddened to see him go. Though she kept the latter part to herself as she nodded in understanding.
"I do appreciate knowing my patients make it home safely yes." Cas murmured as he grabbed his bag and the woman lead him back downstairs to the front door. Seeing him out safely onto the sidewalk as she watched him cross the street from where she leaned in her clinic's door. When the vehicle would pass leaving only empty air where Viktor had been she would blink before chuckling.
"Show off." She called out unsure if he heard her or not wherever he was lurking as she slipped back inside and locked up shop. When a message would come later in the night from an unknown number she would pause before opening it. Seeing the three simple words she smiled. Before pressing save. The lingering feeling she would see the man again for more then just dinner staying with her long into the night.
