Another sunny day in Shibuya. Students hustle and bustle around the school, enjoying the sunshine. Though one Tamer has less than cheerful intentions today. Dante, the leader of the Mazoku, has come here looking to recruit someone into his growing ranks. Currently biomerged with his partner Wormmon, Chaos Piedmon lurks around the school, disguised as a janitor. The SM level has impeccable hearing, and can listen in to figure out who might be suitable to join his team of less than benevolent warriors.
The disguised Digimon pushes a janitorial cart down the hallway. The janitor is a bit overweight, and his dark hair is thinning on top. No one would suspect this janitor is a fraud. Janitor Piedmon strolls down the hall with the cart, whistling a happy tune. The two personalities inside his head start to bicker.
Dante: "There's got to be someone here that could be an asset to the Mazoku. I had forgotten just how crowded and obnoxious school is."
Wormmon: "With kids today as morally unscrupulous as they are, it shouldn't take long. Let's get out of here sooner rather than later. Listening to so many students talking and gossiping, yap yap yap yap! You hoomans are so weird."
"Yes, I can understand how listening to someone who talks a lot would get vey annoying..."
"Is that a dig at me?!"

Why did he have to be back in this world? It was a shame that Eito still has some emotional connection to the Analog World and to his parents. It was all so... messy. The Digital World was a much better fit for him - though even that was still just a little too chaotic.
Still, walking down the halls of the school, he daydreams of returning there. His wandering is slowed with weight of both a backpack full of heavy books, and the knowledge of the Digital World's existence. "...soon," he mumbles, seemingly to nobody, but if one were a Tamer, they may notice that the toy clipped on his belt is a Digivice.
"Good," a small voice exclaimed from the Digivice, "I'm getting cramped in here!"
"...oh?"
"Okay, you got me, it ain't that bad. But I want to get out and stretch my legs!"
"..."
"Figure of speech! You know that!"
Eito shakes his head then continues down the hall. What was the next class again?

While snooping around the school, Janitor Piedmon takes notice of a young man. Listening in closer, it sounds like there is a Digimon talking to him. The janitor rushes down the hall over to the student. Upon getting closer, he recognizes something that resembles a Digivice.
(Thinking) "Ah yes, this one might be just what we are looking for."
The janitor scurries around the student, blocking his path with the cart.
"Excuse me, young man, but I believe you left something important in your locker. Maybe you should go back and check. But hurry up, class is about to start!"
The janitor tries to hide an evil grin. If the student goes back and opens his locker, the initiation into the Mazoku would begin. Chaos Piedmon will test the student, and if they can complete the three Shadow Trials, he would be accepted into their ranks.
"Quick question. You wouldn't happen to be looking for opportunity, would you? The chance to work with others to further a common cause? No reason."

It takes him a moment to realize he is being talked to - after all, why would the janitor be talking to him - but Eito eventually glances over at the janitor. He's saying something about forgetting something in his locker? Eito is sure he didn't leave anything there, but he might as well humor the old man. "...thanks." A further question about opportunity and working with others towards a common goal piques his interest, but why did the janitor even care about Eito, and what did he even mean or want? "...would depend on the goal... why?"
Eito's Digivice buzzes but he pays it no heed, not wanting to want to mess with it in public. Instead, he slowly walks over to his locker, occasionally looking back suspiciously at the janitor, and quickly enters the combination into the lock. Again, the Digivice buzzes. "...what?" He glances down to look at it as he opens his locker, trying to use the door for privacy...

The student seems puzzled by the nosy janitor, but plays along. When asked about opportunity, he shows some interest, asking about the goal.
"Oh, it's just this thing me and some friends talk about. The end goal would be power and wealth, but what do I know about that? I'm just a janitor."
Janitor Piedmon runs his fingers through his slowly disappearing hair, sighing at the loss of his youth. In truth, Dante often worries what it will be like once he's older. For now, he's going to make the best of things, and right now, that means seeing if this young man could join his team.
"Anyways, uh, do take care!"
The janitor rushes off and turns a corner. He slowly peeks around, watching Eito return to his locker. Class is about to start soon, so the traffic in the halls is thinning out. As Eito is about to open his locker, no one is there to see him besides the trickster. As he opens the locker, a portal made of dark energy pulls him inside. Eito disappears into his locker, and the door slams shut behind him. Piedmon grins, then teleports away to begin the Shadow Trials.
Eito Watanabe would find himself in what appears to be a classroom out of a Tim Burton movie. The room is lit by torches, the walls are painted black and purple, and skulls and other Halloween decorations fill the room. A teacher with glasses and long brown hair pulled back into a ponytail appears behind the desk in a cloud of smoke.
"Greetings, and welcome to the Shadow Trials!"

"Power and wealth," Eito states, unable to stop himself from speaking his mind, "are not goals in and of themselves, but they can help reach them." His brow furrows as a hand touches his hair, but he tries to ignore it. He's not even sure why he told the janitor that much, not that it matters.
The locker door is opened. The Digivice issues concern about an odd feeling. The human would have ignored it if not for the vortex. The kid falls in. The door closes. The day goes on.
Upon exiting the strange portal and regaining his senses, Eito quickly takes in the new environment and deduces this was more Digital World shenanigans. "Ah, so this is how it is going to be." The Digivice buzzes once more, and Eito removes it from the clip. "You can talk now," says the Tamer. "We're not in the Analog world anymore."
"I think that janitor might be-" the Digivice begins. Eito interrupts calmly. "Yes, I am aware. Human tip: portals to eldritch locales are quite uncommon in the Analog World, especially within lockers."
It was then that Eito realized they were not alone. Another human - or was it? - welcomes him to the Shadow Trials in a puff of smoke. "You must be the wizard," he jokes with a deadpan voice and expression. "Are you here to give me my heart?" Perhaps this wasn't the best analogy, but he certainly wasn't in Kansas - or Shibuya - any more.

The Piedmon could tell that this is no ordinary student. No, his intelligence and outlook are not all that different from Dante. Eito might do well for himself in the Mazoku. When he refers to the "teacher" as a wizard, and asks about getting a heart, Dante can't keep himself form laughing like a maniac.
"I appreciate the reference, but let me bring you up to speed. I am actually a Digimon Tamer, currently biomerged with my partner. We are Dante, and Wormmon, respectively. I have brought you here to see if you can pass the tests required to join our faction, the Mazoku. If you do not wish to participate, I will happily return you back to your locker, or maybe I will play some tricks on you first."
Chaos Piedmon shuffles some papers around on his desk, then walks over and sets a sheet of paper down on the desk next to Watanabe.
"The first trial is multiple choice. It will determine whether you really have the mindset we are looking for. Simply circle the rune with the same color as the answer." _________________

"Bio...merge..." Eito is unfamiliar with the term, but can piece together what it means. "So you are fused with a Digimon. I did not know that was a possibility." So he was taken out of school to take some tests? A bit backwards, but... "I accept the challenges."
It starts with what 'tests' brought to mind after being at school - paper exams. His eyes run down the page, and his confidence wanes. "These are... some questions."
Question 1:
A beggar approaches you and asks for some money. What do you do?
1 (Red) Give them some money. It's just a pittance.
2 (Gold) Reject their request and give them nothing.
3 (Violet) Kill the beggar for daring to beg you for money. They probably had it coming.
The first one was easy. Just give him the money. Making enemies with the many poor is an unwise decision. People remember.
Question 2:
You are ruler of a small nation. After deciphering enemy codes, you learn that a large army will be attacking one of your key cities in 5 days. Enemy defenses will be down drastically in 10 days. What do you do?
1 (Red) Quietly reinforce the city before the raid, and respond when your enemy is at their weakest.
2 (Gold) Evacuate the city and spare innocent lives.
3 (Violet) Do nothing. Allow the city to be attacked and respond when your enemy is at their weakest.
A much tougher question. How important is the city? It says 'key', but could their army afford to temporarily lose it, then take it back? If evacuation is noticed by the enemy, it could change the enemy's entire plan and they'd lose the opportunity. How was he supposed to know what to do? He wasn't a general-
Wait, yes he was. A Xros General. Perhaps he is expected to know this kind of stuff in order to even be in the Digital World. This was probably his ticket here. He'll just assume that they can retake the city later. They had no soldiers to spare, likely, and all arms would be needed to take on the army. In order to not let them know they are onto them, he'll sacrifice the city.
Question 3:
You are an outsider in a foreign land. The ruler offers you a chance to increase your reputation with them by dealing with some bandits. What do you do?
1 (Red) Reject the offer. We serve no one.
2 (Gold) Accept the offer. Build reputation.
3 (Violet) Reject the offer and side with the bandits.
Another easy question. Of course side with the ruler. He is in a position of power that could be taken advantage of later, and would lose no reputation among any except the bandits. After all, even if this was a leader that a large number of the peasants hated, nobody likes bandits and he'd be seen helping the peasants out.
Question 4:
Same scenario as 3, but you have agreed to help the ruler. The bandits now ask for your help. What do you do?
1 (Red) Agree to help the bandits, but betray them later and side with the ruler.
2 (Gold) Agree to help the bandits and exploit the ruler's trust.
3 (Violet) Deny the bandits and maintain loyalty to the ruler.
Eito's jaw clenches and hands close up tightly. These questions were really wearing him down. The gold answer was incorrect in his mind due to his previous answer, but the other two were difficult. On the one hand, it would be easier to destroy the bandits from the inside. On the other hand, this could sew doubts in the ruler's mind as to his trustworthiness. Perhaps if the ruler was in on the plan from the beginning... he sighs and circles red.Too bad ChaosPiedmon wasn't privy to his thought process - was he? Maybe he would give Eito a chance to explain his rationale.
Question 5:
You have been tasked with assassinating a target for an important client, but it turns out to be an innocent civilian. What do you do?
1 (Red) Ignore personal feelings and carry out the task.
2 (Gold) Allow the target to flee and lie about a successful mission.
3 (Violet) Attempt to negotiate a higher payoff to spare the target.
As much as the innocent's life was worth, gold and violet would not work. The client would know immediately that he didn't kill the target if he went violet, and if gold... well, people aren't good at 'staying dead' without the help of a professional. He would have to go red for that answer.
These were difficult questions. What would the rest of the test be like? Would Eito even make it to the rest of the test?

Once Eito is done with the quiz, Teacher Piedmon struts over and takes his paper. He walks back over to his desk.
"Wrong! Wrong! Wrong wrong wrong! Oh wait, maybe I should read it first." ______________
Eito Watanabe's answers 1: Red 2: Violet 3: Gold 4: Red 5: Red ______________
1st Question. "Let's see, you answered Red, give the beggar money. The correct answer is Gold. Why would you give a person something that they have not earned? You might as well pour sand into his hands. Maybe you have just made him a target for other less fortunate people."
2nd Question. "You chose the Violet rune. That is correct. If you evacuated or reinforced the city, you would have tipped the enemy off to their leaked plans. Very good."
3rd Question. "Gold, correct. A powerful ally is valuable, even if you intend to betray them later."
4th Question. "Correct. The answer is red. While it can be beneficial to side with the bandits, the ruler has more power in the area. With both sides seeking your aid, you can play them against each other."
5th Question. "Incorrect. The correct answer is Violet. If the target is a civilian, it is likely that the bounty was placed for personal reasons, and if you can negotiate a better offer, it is worth it to try."
First Trial: 1 Gold 2 Violet 3 Gold 4 Red 5 Violet
Eito misses the first and last questions, getting 3/5 right.
"Alright, not bad. Not good, but it's not going to cost you. The important thing is that you reflect on these questions, and other decisions you may encounter. Now onto the 2nd Trial. Picture a very strong individual, and then take their strength away. What do they have left? You must learn not to rely entirely on your strengths.
For the 2nd trial, you must make your way through a dangerous cave, with only a glowing violet blade as your only weapon and source of light. You may bring Digimon with you, but you are not allowed to use any abilities. Head out the door, and face what awaits ahead. There could be dangerous shadow creates comprised of dark energy. You may have to navigate hazardous terrain. This is the hardest trial, so I wish you luck. I eagerly await your return, if at all. If not, I am sorry to have put you in great danger."
The teacher reaches into his desk, pulls out a glowing violet blade, and hands it to Eito. He sits down and puts his feet up on the desk, rifling through a manga. ______________
For the 2nd trial, you must make your own adventure through a dark cave. Using Digimon abilities will cost you. This can take as many rounds as you choose. What dangers will you face?
(Let me know if I made any mistakes grading the quiz.)

Three out of five... not the best grade Eito has ever gotten. He knew he struggled with the test, but he got some wrong that he was expecting. At least it seems to be an acceptable score, and he understands why he got those wrong.
The next test was a lot more physical than just answering questions. Not his strong suit, but he'll make it work. The glowing sword was quite interesting, at least, as he had not seen many digital weapons that humans were able to use. Or was this from the Analog World and altered? His examination of the sword includes running a finger down the side, and taking a few practice swings with it. "I'm ready..."
Into the cave ventures the brave knight with his magic sword, prepared to vanquish any dragons within! Not quite. However, a boy with a glowy sword does enter the dangerous cave. The glow of the sword is barely enough light to navigate by, and the darkness and shadows play tricks on him with gifts of paranoia and unease. Was that a shadowy beast or a shadow? Was that rock just moving? Was that giant spectral bat trying to suck his blood or merely eat him?
Eito wields the sword with two hands, performing a clumsy overhead slash at the ghost-bat. His telegraphed attack gave the bat plenty of time to dodge, and its sudden erratic swooping was just barely blockable with his skill level. A couple more wild swings are unleashed before Eito realizes his tactic isn't going to work. He calms himself with deep cleansing breaths as he backed away slowly, up against a wall he saw when swiping crazily. The bat tries to swoop him again, but he is ready. This time the overhead slash was exactly what was needed. The bat couldn't circle around and never attacked low, so waiting and timing the attack was all that was needed. Perhaps later, he could get some sword training.
There was no time for a break now. Eito presses on, navigating by swordlight the best he can. He nearly trips a few times, but he is slowly getting used to it. Unfortunately, he seems to be navigating himself into circles. After going back to where he thinks he once was, he notices a fissure in the wall large enough - barely - for him to fit through going sideways. "...great." Squeezing through one small step at a time was a hassle enough, but there were also sharp rocks that cut at him and his clothing. Luckily, nothing he couldn't fix later, but that would require enough light to travel by and his backpack which seemed to have been replaced by a wormhole in his locker. Something to sort out later.
After slowly making his way over uneven terrain - it was a good thing his boots had good traction, but even so, it really tried his balance -Eito comes to a piece of uneven terrain he could not cross. A small but seemingly endlessly deep chasm blocks the way. He could try to jump it, but he is not an Olympics long-jump medalist. "...Tetsu, it is your turn."
Eito switches the sword to his left hand, grabbing his Digivice and pointing it at the chasm. Out of the device appears Tetsu, the Buffalo model Trailmon. "FINALLY! Been waitin' for my turn, boss! Whatcha need me for?"
Eito calmly, quietly just issues one command. "Open the doors."
"You got it boss! What next? You need me to ram through this cave? Or are we being attacked? I can-"
"Thank you, you can go back now." Eito exits the door on the far end, having walked through Tetsu and used him as a bridge. He then returns Tetsu to the Digivice.
"Not cool, boss."

Eito takes a moment to thoroughly examine the blade before he sets off on the 2nd trial. Dante is starting to like the kid's style. It was wise to be cautious. Maybe the student would be a perfect fit for the Mazoku. As Eito Watanabe ventures onward through the 2nd trial, the disguised SM continues reading through the manga. He points his finger at the book, firing a small bit of magic before turning the page. Eito's adventure can now be seen in the manga, so Dante can watch his journey.
Dante watches as the student learns to wield the blade. He has a run in with a dangerous bat, but Eito soon figures out how to deal with the creature. He guards himself by standing with his back to the wall, and reads his flight patterns. Eito continues on, passing through a small gap, as the rocks and sharp edges tear into his clothes. Dante recalls a similar occurrence when Piedmon went through the trials, though Eito is fairing much better than the Prince of Chaos could muster, without relying on his powers.
After overcoming many obstacles, Eito reaches a deep chasm that he cannot cross on his own. Thinking cleverly, he brings forth Tetsu, the Buffalo Model Trailmon to clear the gap. Eito continues on towards the exit, and returns to the classroom, entering through a door that appears where the whiteboard once was. Dante is surprised to see Eito has made it back.
"Ahh, very good! It's clear that one of your gifts is adapting. The Mazoku could go far with you on board. Now then, to prepare for the 3rd Trial, the last trial."
The teacher drops his illusion, revealing his Chaos Piedmon form. The SM level stretches his arms out, and with a blast of energy, pushes the desks up against the walls, creating an empty space in the room.
"The last trial is fairly easy, but very important. Rest up for a bit, then sit on the floor, and open your mind."

The journey through the cave turned out to be as much of a learning experience as the written test. Eito was exhausted, scratched up, and in some need to repair his clothing, but he was also successful. Perhaps the teacher was right, and adapting was one of his strong suits. It wasn't something he really considered before this, but it gave him just a touch of pride. "...Thank you."
He then examines his clothing, missing ChaosPiedmon's transformation. "I seemed to have ripped my clothes in one of the obstacles. Have you seen my backpack? It was in the locker that turned into a- oh." He now notices the Digimon before him. "So... that is the result of a 'biomerge' I see. Or is this just another mask? At least yours are more literal than most people's."
Now it was time to rest. Eito sits down, placing the sword by his side, and once again consults the Digivice. "The cave was too small for you," he remarks, "you're lucky that there was a time and place to let you out. Is there a way to 'compress your file size' besides sending you into the Digivice?" If a V-pet train could shrug, the little image on the screen would. "Sorry, not that I know of. Maybe one of those cards has a thing but not that I've heard."

Eito had made it out of the 2nd Trial, a little wiser, but worse for wear. He inquires about his backpack before taking notice of Chaos Piedmon revealing his true appearance, at least while in this stage.
"Ah, this is my true appearance, while biomerged. Though it still irks me that I have many similarities with another Piedmon I know. He is an imbecile, but no game of chess can be won without pawns. At least not very easily, haha. I suppose if you move the horsey thing around long enough..."
Chaos Piedmon slaps himself in the face. He was letting Wormmon go off on a tangent there.
"Where were we? Ah yes. Here, I will heal your wounds and mend your attire."
Chaos Piedmon waves his hand in the air, wiggling his fingers. Eito can feel a wave of energy brush against him as his wounds are restored. His clothes are fully repaired, though still not as fashionable as an eight feet tall jester getup. One of the challenges Eito discovered is that his partner Trailmon is quite bulky, and he wants to find a way to get him to slim down, so to speak.
"Alas, I'm not sure how to help your friend with his weight problem. Maybe get a holosuit? Do they come in his size? Alright, on to the final trial."
The Illustrious one hovers up and floats through the air across the room. He raises his arms out, closes his eyes, and takes a deep breath as he slowly rotates while floating.
"Can you feel that? Please, sit down and close your eyes. I want you to relax, to feel the world around you.
To complete the final trial, you must understand the consequences of your actions. Every decision you make could affect the lives of others in ways you never even realize. Our actions leave echoes that can be felt long after we have left. It's commonly known as the Butterfly Effect.
Feel the energy around you. Ask yourself, who was here before us? Where are we going? What is our purpose? What can we do right now in this moment to better ourselves, and set us down a brighter path? The last part, I want you to recall a time when your actions left an echo. Maybe it is something you regret. Our failures make us stronger. They make us who we are. It drives us forward. Dig deeper into your mind, and awaken." _____________
To pass the final trial, one must become more in touch with the world around them, and recall a time when they created an echo. For Piedmon, it was when he accidentally destroyed Lilithmon in a fit of jealousy. For Devidramon of the Mazoku, it was killing his own Tamer. For Aeron, partner of Bones, it was not leaving her abusive mother sooner. We all make choices that affect our lives, and the lives of those around us. No matter how big, or small, the slightest change can set you down a new path. What would Eito Watanabe recall?

So ChaosPiedmon is a variation on Piedmon. That makes sense. "Wait... you are CHAOS Piedmon," Eito asks, "yet REGULAR Piedmon is the imbecile? Are you sure your names aren't mixed up? It also seems that he is a fool in multiple meanings."
The human stares at ChaosPiedmon, head slightly askew, with surprise and incredulity as the 'wise teacher' talks about the 'horsey thing' in chess. He says nothing, however, mentally filing that under the 'chaos' part of ChaosPiedmon.
The biomerged Digimon instantly repairs both Eito and his clothing, saving him a lot of effort. "Thank you very much." He pats down all the areas that were ripped, noting that it was like nothing even happened. Too bad it seems that even ChaosPiedmon's magic wasn't a solution to the Trailmon's size issue.
Eito follows the ChaosPiedmon across the room to the other side, wondering what trial awaits. "A... self-reflection trial at the end? That....makes sense." Indeed, after answering the difficult questions and venturing through the darkness without usual strengths, looking back was the next step. Thus he sits cross-legged, closing his eyes and letting the past wash over him.
Who was here before them? He did not know, and had no way of instantly knowing without asking, but he tried to meditate on that. It feels like there was immense history, the weight of many that came before him. He would do well to learn more.
Where is he going and what is his purpose? These questions he muses aloud. "Before I knew that this world parallel to my own existed, I figured those questions did not matter. The Analog World was too chaotic and unpredictable, even with the help of science, and that eventually, anything I did would someday be lost to history. Was there such a thing as destiny or purpose? I questioned that deeply. Now though... the Digital World has given me a chance to actually see possibilities."
As for the echoes that have affected him and those around him, there was only one instance that mattered. "There was no way for me to know the impact of my actions. I was only ten years old, that was a third of my life ago. There was a new bookstore... I begged my parents to go check it out, and they acquiesced. This was before we owned anything with GPS in it, so we ended up making some wrong turns..."
He pauses and sighs, kneading his temples. "There was no way I would know this would happen. I... we were mugged. We lost everything we had with us, and I gained a broken nose. We never did recover all the money, but we at least escaped with our lives, and got back most of our stolen belongings. But... in the time between being mugged and having our belongings returned, some of our important cards and information floated in currents we failed to see, and we were victims of identity theft. How would I have known? I shouldn't be the one to blame! And nobody blames me... except for myself for some reason."

Eito questions the differences in the two Piedmons, and suggests that maybe the other jester should have the moniker of 'Chaos'. The Illustrious One strokes his chin as he ponders the suggestion.
"Hmm, both of us do seem to revel in chaos. I am just more intelligent. Piedmon's power got to his head eons ago. So maybe you have a point there."
Chaos Piedmon listens as Eito speaks of destiny. It was like he is preaching to the choir. The Super Mega Digimon hangs on every word, nodding in agreement. This reflects more of Dante's beliefs, viewing the world as corrupt, and ultimately hopeless. Wormmon just wants to destroy things for amusement.
"Yes, and people don't even realize how flawed things are. The corrupt will always reign supreme. That is why I am gathering a team of humans and Digimon that want to better themselves, and better understand the world around them. Together, we have that purpose. We can carve out our own legacy, and influence others as we see fit."
Chaos Piedmon is unaware that in doing so, he would just be creating more corruption.
Eito reflects back to a time when he was 10. He wanted to check out a new bookstore, but when his parents were taking him there, tragedy strikes. It sounds like they didn't recover from the identity theft for years. Chaos Piedmon takes a moment to process this information.
"A fitting answer to the question. Though it was through no fault of your own. You couldn't have known what would happen. Good people suffer because of those with evil in their hearts. You have done well, and I hereby declare you an Apostate of the Mazoku!"
The Piedmon floats over to his desk and reaches into a drawer. He takes out an apple and offers it to Eito.
"This apple represents the knowledge of good and evil. To understand them, not to be bound by them. It's mostly symbolic."
Looks like Eito Watanabe has passed this class, and Chaos Piedmon has found a worthy addition to the Mazoku. In a moment, the student would be returned to his school. The ground starts to twist and turn, and suddenly gives out underneath Eito. He would fall into a pit of darkness before exiting the portal in his locker. Certainly not the ordinary school day. Did a young prodigy just join the Mazoku? Maybe one day Eito would be the one giving the tests, if he can climb up the ranks. ________________
Eito Watanabe and his locomotive buddy have passed the Shadow Trials. Exit posts are welcomed.
