"GAAAAAHHH!" Shoutmon says as he falls. Luckily, though, he did fall on Duffer, which broke his fall. However, Kotemon immediately pushed him off of the human and then began berating him about being an idiot.
Normally, Shoutmon would have argued back, saying he DID get the comics after all. However, the shelf immediately fell down, and the whole thing collapsed. Seeing the store clerk come walking up, Shoutmon immediately ran out of there, not wanting to be discovered. Unfortunately, he ran right into Adrian, who had just finished shopping.
"Hey, Shoutmon, what's up?"
"Oh, hey Adrian! What's, uh... what's shakin'? What's the word?"
Adrian then narrowed his eyes at Shoutmon. "Okay, you only talk like that when you're hiding something. What did you do?"
"Nothing!" Shoutmon insists. This was proven false, as Duffer was immediately shooed out of the store by the clerk, causing Shoutmon to sweat from nervousness. "Okay... I guess I accidentally knocked over a comic book stand."
"YOU WHAT?!" Adrian yelled, incredibly furious. "...that's it, you're going to the Digital World for a bit."
"Wait, Adrian, please you can't!"
"Yes, I can! Do you have ANY idea what you've done?! Just stay right there," Adrian growls. He runs over to Duffer to apologize.
"Shoutmon told me what happened. I am incredibly sorry, I should've been there to stop him. Is there anything I can do to make it up to you and Kotemon? I could buy you lunch if you guys are hungry."

Duffer ran into Adrian, scattering his well-earned comics to the floor. "Agh!" He panicked and began carefully picking them up before they could be damaged any further. "Don't move, you'll step on them!" He practically shrieked. The boy arranged them by issue and number, making sure he'd grabbed as many as he possibly could. "Alright... alright... 354, 355, 356, 358?! Where's 35- oh, oh there it is..." He let out a relieved sigh as kotemon followed behind him. "Duffer, relax, every trip to the human world doesn't need to end with you crying..." Kotemon gently rubbed his companion's back. The did little to comfort his friend.
The two looked at Adrian and Shoutmon, Duffer too upset for words while Kotemon tried to remain reasonable. "Lunch sounds nice." Kotemon said, helping his partner up. "There we can calm down and access the situation..." Duffer wasn't crying, at the very least, but he didn't seem to look up from his collection as he carefully opened his backpack and delicately placed them in there. "Lets get some noodles..." the boy finally said. "See? It'll be fine, Duffer. We can find some more comics..." Kotemon looked back at the shop proprieter to make sure he wasn't calling anyone. "But let's hurry before someone recognizes us..." "It's been two years, Kotemon." Duffer sighed. "I'd rather not run into a bitter DATS agent and have Destruction of Property added to a rap sheet." Kotemon whispered harshly. "Adrian, you heard the boy, he wants noodles, lead the way."

"I really am sorry..." Adrian says, trying to console Duffer. This was not how he was expecting today to go at all. "How about this: I wasn't there when Shoutmon absolutely ruined everything, so I could go in and clear everything up!"
"Yeah, that's a great idea-"
"Not. Another. Word," Adrian bitterly told Shoutmon, still clearly angry at him. "Put this on." He then aggressively stuffed a dark blue hoodie onto Shoutmon that hid most of the red parts of him.
"Do I have to wear this? It's ugly and-"
"JUST. WEAR IT." Adrian nearly yelled at him. "One more word and it's a week in the Digital World for you." Adrian took a deep breath, attempting to calm himself down. He turned back to Duffer and Kotemon.
"Sorry about that... I think there's a noodle shop somewhere in this mall. Come on, let's get going."

"Let's just go get lunch..." Kotemon said, Duffer hiding his head in his comics to avoid looking up. "Adrian, I have something we really need to discuss quietly, so stop fighting! It's not helping any of us right now. Or maybe you just want someone to call mall security?" The digimon grabbed Duffer by the arm and dragged him along.
"Regardless, let's all calm down and eat." The second the noodle shop was in view, Kotemon hurried his tamer to a table. "Despite my insistence otherwise, Duffer has decided to tell you two the events that lead up to here... He's still a bit sensitive about all of them so please, please try not to get him upset... understand?" Kotemon asked as it took out its training sword and pointed it towards the boy's throat.
"Kotemon..." Duffer said, pushing the sword down. "Sorry... but he's right. Around 3 years ago, I became a foreign exchange student from Minnesota. I moved from my home and family to Japan. I lived fairly normally... for an hour, until I met kotemon while trying to find a copy of Vice City on the exchange student's computer. After a shaky start we eventually became friends, he followed me and taught me everything she knew. They helped me in school, make new friends, explore, and lose weight. Then, one day, there was an assault on this very mall. Digimon stormed the place. We went in to help."
"He was struck in the head by a piece of concrete." Kotemon sighed. "I took him to a digital world hospital, but he was comatose. For two years I had to live on my own, scrounging up money to pay his bills, and hoping that he wouldn't die. One day, he woke up. It was the happiest moment of my many lives." The digimon put its sword away. "But there was a problem; everyone thought Duffer died that day and I was prime suspect number one. The Japanese authorities put me on their most wanted list, and I became a fugitive while his family came from the states to help look for his remains."
"We live on our own now." The boy sighed. "I don't even know what happened to most of my friends, in America or Japan, let alone my family... In fact, this is one of the few times Kotemon's let me come back here."

"I'm sorry..." Adrian admits. "Let's just go to the noodle shop..." He then turned back to Shoutmon with an angry expression, and made the 'zip-lips' motion towards him. He meant it, too.
Groaning, Shoutmon just followed the others to the noodle shop, and the four of them sat at a nearby table. Adrian just hoped that no one would immediately discover that the Digimon were... well, Digimon.
That's when Duffer and Kotemon explained their situation. Duffer was an exchange student from Minnesota, and two years ago Duffer had gotten into a coma... leaving Kotemon to fend for himself.
"That must've been terrible, Kotemon," Shoutmon told the kendo Digimon sincerely. "Even though he's royally pissed at me, I don't know what I'd do if something like that happened to Adrian."
Then they said that after Duffer had woken up, Kotemon had been accused of Duffer's 'death'. The two of them truly have disappeared from the world...
"Maybe... maybe we can find proof that Kotemon didn't actually kill him?" Adrian suggests. "I know it sounds like a long shot, but damn it, we should try, right? That could at least make up for the comic book store thing."

"Oh no, no, we shouldn't ha-" "Would you?" Duffer asked, eyes alight. "If you did that man... we could finally go home, kotemon can finally meet my parents, I can go back to America and see my friends and family, I can go back to school and be on the baseball team again! I was just gonna ask you to buy comics for me from now on but that's way, way better!"
"Duffer, if we go back to America we can never return to the digital world." "...So?" "So if I die and have to go back to the Village of Beginnings, we'll never see each-other again." The mon pointed out, somberly. "Oh." "...But, if it makes you happy, we might as well-" "But I dunno if it's worth that risk. You were with me for all that time, I can't just toss you like some old toy." Duffer hugged kotemon. "We'll figure something out buddy, don't worry. Until then though, what to order...?" The boy looked at the menu, humming to himself. "eh, I guess I'll just take the ramen." He sets the menu aside then looks at the obtained comics, careful to make sure they're in as good a condition as he can get them.
Kotemon turned to Adrian. "I'm sure this is a lot to process right now, so ask us any questions if you need them. You're one of the few people who know about this currently, so try not to spread it around too much unless you're sure it can get me out of a conviction."

"Isn't the Digital World accessible from everywhere?" Adrian asks, completely confused.
"I don't think so, Adrian. At the moment, only the Shibuya district has had incidents involving the Digital World, and us Digimon."
"Oh... well, you don't have to MOVE BACK to America, if this all works out. You can continue to live here, but you'd still be able to keep in touch with your friends and family. I actually have a pen pal in America, so I know it's possible."
"Why don't you ever tell me those kinds of things?"
"Because you never asked."
"Oh..."
Adrian turned to Kotemon when he started talking to him. "Don't worry... I kind of understand what exactly is going on with you guys. And don't worry, I won't just spread this around to anyone."
Suddenly, there was a loud growling sound. Adrian turned around to his partner, who was blushing and covering his stomach. "Excuse me... kinda hungry..."
Adrian laughed. "That sounded a lot more than 'kind of.' But you're right, let's just order..." Adrian and Shoutmon then placed their own orders of ramen.

"After a hard day of ruining my life..." Duffer mumbled, barely audible as they waited for food. "Those comics aren't good for you anyways, they're so violent and twisted. You should read proper books." Kotemon nodded. "Oh, because the story of a man systematically seeing all his friends and loved ones die due to his failure to usurp his crazy uncle or the tale of two families who let their hate tear them apart from the inside, or, even better, the tale about the rich man who never found true happiness because of classism within the upper echelons of society culminating in his murder and a funeral where only 3 people showed up is SO much better than a man who turns into a wolf without choice, or a man who fools with the laws of nature and continually suffers for it."
Kotemon looked at Duffer with concern. "They've turned everything into a comic, Kotemon. The classics of literature are just as gruesome and tragic as any horror movie, and are often far more "real"." Duffer shook his head. "And worse, so much more boring too. Mister Williams Hakespear takes five paragraphs talking about some guy we've never met before he died in the same time Jason chops up 3 teens we've spent half an hour with." The digimon was now stunned. "Not to mention half of them don't even make any sense, what on Earth are those books blabbering on about? Most of those words aren't real anymore!" "Duffer, where'd you learn all this?" "I told you kotemon, everything's been turned into a comic at one point or another, even crappy plays and movies."
