Betamon tags along, as the group flees the castle. In all the commotion, they didn't have too much trouble leaving unnoticed. After they had gone so far into the forest that they couldn't even see the castle, Cloak sets Cassius down against a tree. He feels the rough bark against his back, as the thief struggles to raise his head. Cas is right, maybe they are the monsters. What evil had befallen nature more so than mankind?
Cas considers breaking the mask, but instead chooses to place it over Cassius' face. She leans in and kisses the mouth of the mask. Once again, Cas was leaving Cassius, wanting to see more out of him. For all the pain his internal crisis caused him, he had still not lived up to what Cas really saw inside him. Betamon curls up on Cassius' lap, waiting until he is well enough to travel. The Rookie looks at Cloak and Dagger, then up at Cas with remorse in his eyes.
"Thank you. I'll take care of him from here."
Cassius' chest rises and falls, as his lungs work extra hard to provide oxygen. His red vest is tattered and ripped, exposing some of his chest. His blonde hair is a mess, still wet from the water. What was he to do from here? Should he suck it up and look for the next heist? Should he return to the Yokai and his life as a criminal? Would he still seek vengeance against Cassandra? In his heart, he feels that he owes it to her to repay the kindness she shared with him. It seems like there is no way he could atone for the pain he caused her. Through the eyes of the mask, he watches as Cas and the twins walk away.
"Goodbye, Cas. Goodbye... for now."
As traumatic as his time with Cas has been, his mind is clear now. He isn't conflicted over his feelings for the doctor. He realizes that he cares for her, and wants to please her. Eventually, he would return to the Yokai, but only to hinder the organization from the inside. He would lead them down a false path when they were getting close to Cas. He wouldn't harm others out of greed or malice. With his new found inner peace, he would retreat into himself, distancing himself from the others. His comrades in the Yokai would welcome this change, as he isn't as irritable. Though deep down, he knows what he is. Cassius could not deny his dark nature. He tried to run from the past, often resorting to alcohol abuse to numb his pain. As time would pass, his mind is not as preoccupied with Cassandra, though his face would always bare a reminder of the woman who held his fate in her hands. He is Cassius, headstrong, charming, greedy, prideful, and at his core, he is a man fighting for a better life.
