Those Days of Career Fairs and Soda and Beer

With the launch of Overlords new game just around the corner, Talia couldn’t be bothered with anything but programmers deadlines right now, so you could imagine contempt when the art director had asked her to take the day off from new game work to sit at the company booth for the local schools ‘career fair’, something that yes, was as equally dreadful as it sounded. Apparently the human resources department was considering creating a ‘shadow program’ for school age kids to let them observe what sort of work went into what could be their possible career path - in Talia’s opinion, watching someone sit at a computer all day sounded super duper boring. Tch, what was even the point of these fairs? Kids this age weren’t thinkings about careers, they were just thinking about girls and boys while worry about how they were gonna pass Tuesday’s math quiz.
“Bleh! These are like cardboard coated in sugar.” The twins had sampled the complimentary donuts provided at this fair, which of course were dried out and bland as with most free food at these things. “Told you! Human culture lesson of the day: free events equals low budget, and low budget equals bad or cheap food.” She was trying to talk to them without making it look like she was talking to an inanimate bag to outsiders. At least the sweets would keep the two busy and hidden away in the bag behind the booth where no one could see them while the girl attempted to pass out pamphlets. And one might ask how that was going? So far two high school boys had tried to get her phone number. another kid had taken a program and used it to spit out his gum in about a foot away, and just about everyone had begged for either a coupon or spoilers for their upcoming launch. That was how it was going.
Normally Talia would have just left but since the company had paid a questionable amount of money to rent this space (and she was still on the payroll) she was unfortunately required to sit here and be miserable for an allotted amount of time. “Can we go look around Talia? Maybe look for some real food?” The holosuited Tohru and Simba looked up at her with puppy eyes, begging to be set free, and frankly Talia wasn’t falling for it. “Absolutely not, this place is way too dangerous for that, now be quiet.” If a group of gaggling high school girls saw the cute and cuddly Tohru it would be game over for sure.

"Well today's class certainly was interesting, too say the least." John said out load as he walked down the hall on the first floor his mind remembering the strange creature and everything that happened afterwords, "Jeez Danial, what have you gotten me into?" As he exited the front he stood at the door with it open and saw that there where some booths set up with people trying to get different kids to walk up to them. John was confused by this since he only went in the school what felt like not too long ago, "What the heck, how did this get set up so fast?!" He then remembered that he saw some people in the process of setting up some wooden structures that looked like the booths that are all around here. "Well this i a surprise I can actually comprehend easily, let's see what's going on." As he left the door, John felt something brush against his leg, looking behind him he just saw it closing and he just shrugged and looked around.
As he walked down the path between the booths, he started to peace everything together, "So this is a job fair, I remember something like this happening during 5th grade, but that was more someone coming in once a day for a week and telling us about their jobs. Well nothing's interesting me here, I'm just going to go back inside and see where everything is... hold on, what's this?" John saw a booth that seemed to be owned by some game company he thought he recognized from somewhere, curious he walked up to the booth where he saw the woman who was at it looked not too older then him, as he was about to greet her he saw that one of the pamphlets advertised the upcoming game Overlords, now he knows he heard about that game somewhere before. "Overlords huh, what's that game about? Oh I'm John, I should have said that first, nice to meet you.", He said as he extended his hand.
Barely getting through the door (mostly) undetected, the Viximon got into the school as more people where outside for the fair, good a time as any to gather info inside the school. "Alright I'm in, let's see if there's anything in here." As she made her way through the hall, ducking between locker rows, she made her way towards where she believed to be the best place to check, the principles office. She sneaked into waiting room and checked the door to see that it was unlocked, cracking the door open she saw that it was empty, the principle must have been out then, she entered and left the door slightly open to hear i anyone would be walking to the room and started to look in the bottom drawers of the desk, because she's too short too check any higher.

“Actually Overlord is the name of our company, the title of the new game is still under wraps for right now, you know, legal contracts and all that, we can’t reveal it until a certain date, yada yada.” The legal and licensing world was a big complicated one that Talia tried to stay away from as much as she possibly could. “We’re actually doing a shadowing program right now for students, so if you have some kind of gaming career in mind, you can sign up to get a first look at just how your field of interest works! I myself work in the programming department.” Ugh, she sounded like some kind of one scale sales robot, there was another field she’d stay far away from, solely for the fact she wasn’t very good at talking to people or being charming, also because she’d feel like she was contributing to the evil of capitalism.
And while Talia was distracted talking to John, the twins had picked up Viximon’s scent and curiosity got the best of them. “We’re gonna get in soooo much trouble for this!” The nervous Koromon warned his sister as they wandered off to search for the signature. “Yeah, but what if it’s a lost digimon? It might get trampled on by these human children, we have to make sure its safe!” If so it would be worth getting in trouble, plus Moonmon had grown bored and restless being shoved inside that unbearably hot and stuffy duffel bag.

"Oh right for some reason I thought it was a game name, I remember reading an article about you guys working on something but that's it. Well it sounds like this program is something I would like, I think I would ether like to work in art or writing, although my art isn't that great right now, but yeah what time would I be going if I joined it?" John thought for a moment, wondering how he should phrase his next question, before asking her. "Hey this might seem like a weird question but... if you where to come across one or more creatures that... by all means should not even exist, what would you do?"
Viximon searched the left drawer for anything that could be related to John's uncle, if that device he was given was something that called digimon, then he must be hiding something, and she was gonna find out what."Okay let's see here, bills, bills, bills... what the heck are bills? Darn-it, nothing, hmm maybe the other drawer has something." As she made her way towards the other drawer, she heard two people she thinks are humans heading towards her location, she decided to hide in the new drawer with it open a crack so she could hear better, and was ready to sprint out of there if she was found.

“Human resources will usually work around your schedule, but it’ll never be for more than a few hours a day because of labor laws and all that jazz, no one wants to get flagged for child slavery.” Bad joke Talia, bad joke. “Well that’s perfect because we have a thriving design and story department, I’m sure you’d get some great experience.” Talia had never had the patience for art, even though coding was way more tedious which was funny. But hey at least coding was specific? Art was too broad and complicated for her own personal liking. “If you’re interested all you have to is send an application through our website and...might I ask what kind of creatures these are? I mean there’s a bunch of mythological creatures you know? I wanna answer but it depends on said creature.” She glanced down at the duffel bag behind the booth which seemed to be oddly still, but didn’t think anything of it for now.
“The smell came from that way Koromon!” Out of all the drawers in the room, they couldn’t help but notice there was only one cracked. “We know you’re in there! Next time close the drawer dummy.”

"Alright, sounds good, I'll send one in sometime this week. So hypothetically speaking, let's say these creatures are a orange dinosaur, a red dinosaur, and a fairy, how would you react to that situation?" John didn't want to reveal what digimon are to anyone, but after learning about them he was a bit spooked about their existence. He had no idea what they could really do and how much damage they could cause, which wouldn't be on his mind if he was allowed to tell anyone that they existed, but he figured that if he where to just bring it up as a made up scenario it could help him talk things out.
"Great, I messed up, bound to get caught sometimes, I'll play dumb and hopefully they'll just think i'm some animal and just put me outside." Viximon slowly inched open the drawer and peered out like a cat, and saw that there where two digimon instead of humans, startled she jumped out and landed across from them while scattering different papers from inside, fur on end with an unsure frown on her face. "More digimon? There are a lot more here then I first thought, they don't seem to want a fight, but what do they want, will they get in my way with my investigation?" Seeing as how they didn't seem aggressive, Viximon relaxed a bit but stayed on her guard. "Sorry, I didn't know if you would attack me or not, I'm Viximon, and if your wondering why I'm in here that's on a need to know basis." She eyed some of the peaces of paper on the floor, and picked them up with her tail to read them. "All of these look like work letters, seems the principle likes to keep things organized."

“Well I would probably dork out over the dinosaurs for a second before running away if they didn’t seem friendly.” As a child she’d adored dinosaurs, especially those museums where you could dig for a fossil in a fake sand pit (and technically not keep it, but she’d be lying if she said she’d followed that rule, besides finders keepers right?). “Maybe the fairy too, but they aren’t as cool as the dinosaurs in my opinion. How about you? What would you in this Jurassic Park like place you seem to be describing?” Come to think of it, there weren’t many dinosaur-y games popular on the market, it was definitely something to pitch to the design department at one point.
“Need to know basis? What are you some kind of royal?” Moonmon snarked at the fox while Koromon went in for a cuddle jump. “So fluffy and warm…” Typical Koromon, never focusing on the important tasks at hand.

John thought for a bit before answering, "Well I would kind of freak out a bit at first, then I would ask questions, and then maybe figure out if I'm awake or not, it's just a thought I had anyway." well that may have been a bust, but at least he did feel better. "So how is it working for Overlords, do you like working there?" Figuring she ether didn't know about digimon, or she did but didn't know that he knew, he decided to go back to talking about the company she works for.
Viximon was about to answer Moonmon's question when Koromon tried to tackle her, her reflexes kicked in as she jumped away from him landing on her currently bad leg and winced in pain. "AGH, stupid leg!" she hissed, and she looked up at the top drawers. "Okay one, please don't do that again, and two, I'm not royalty, this is just an investigation of something personal and I don't want someone getting in the way, sorry if that sounds rude." Suddenly she got an idea, "But uh I'm kind of stuck at the moment, I took a fall earlier and now my leg is a bit messed up, if you can help me get up there, then I'll answer all your questions regarding this case." She hated the idea of asking for help from someone she doesn't know and telling them she was weaker then usual, but she disliked John's cryptic uncle more, and these look like in training's, so she could handle them if they decided to attack.

Talia was all too happy to talk about work. “As a company? It’s definitely decent pay, good benefits, all that jazz, not much to say there, but a lot of times the people who work in gaming are overgrown nerds who got lucky enough to get into the field, and they sometimes can be stubborn about their designs and what they want, you know how artists can be the world’s biggest drama queens. Thing is, sometimes designs need to be edited so they’re easier for us techos to program, and they’re not always willing to do so. Aside from that though? It’s great, no complaints - my position generally consists of programming and then testing for glitches and bugs. We sometimes get free access to conventions too!” Welp, why was she sounding like a saleswoman all of a sudden?
“Huh? What’d you do to your leg though?” The nosy Simbabounced up and down a bit as he asked, with Tohru suggesting an alternative. “Why don’t my brother and I go up and you stay down here so you don’t hurt you leg more? You should get it looked at by the way. Let us help!” Simba nodded, as data surrounded both of them so that they were in their respective recently-accomplished Lopmon and Hackmon forms, the rabbit putting the small fox protectively up on top of her head. “What do you need?” Simba asked curiously.

"Ah yeah, my dad would take me to conventions when we where going by a town with one, got to cosplay as The Beast from Over the Garden Wall once, another time I went as Dipper from Gravity Falls, those where fun times. But man, I hope I don't ever get that picky when it comes to designs before the final project, I like to think of myself as a flexible person and I don't want to lose that."
Viximon's eyes widened in surprise as they turned into their rookie forms, concern flooding her mind on the possibility of them attacking, "well too late to duck out, might as well go all in." she muttered as she decided to answer their questions, "It's a bit embarrassing, but I hurt it by falling off a tree, and thank you for your concern but it should be fine by tomorrow, I can walk on it just fine. As for what to look for, anything that has ether of the names John Jourdain, or Danial Jourdain, I'm thinking that the info I need is in some kind of letter of registration, since this kid just moved here Danial must have sent a letter to the school to let them know he was gonna go to here. Also this principle is organised, so if you find a drawer that has a registration letter in it, chances are all the papers in there are enrollment letters."

“Lucky, my parents were too busy to ever take us to anything like that. After they got divorced their priority was shipping us back and forth in between houses.” Ugh, double birthdays, double holidays, one always trying to one up the other with over the top presents and checks, merely fishing hooks to reel them into the idea of permanent custody. “Personally I’ve never been the artsy type, I like things that have solutions and algorithms, hence why going into computer science was the perfect choice for me!”
That and she didn’t really consider herself dramatic enough for a creative career, although programming was creative to a degree? Writing your own code and software technically was, but it still followed the general rules of programming. “I’ve kind of found that it’s important to be flexible in any job, and respectful since you’re dealing with a lot of different personalities on a daily basis, it can be difficult not to take it too hard.”
Simba had started to climb up the cabinets, wet one of his paws with his tongue for a second before flipping through the files. “Jourdain you said the name was?” Luckily it was all organized by letter so it wasn’t too difficult for the dragon to find. “How come you need them so badly anyway?” Tohru asked, looking up at the fox on her head.

"Oh that sucks, although I kind of wish that my parents did get divorced instead of... Ah never mind it's not important, forget I brought it up." John didn't want to bother her with his own parent problems, he didn't want to seem like he was underplaying her parents divorce. "As for me, the reason I got into art is because I really like stories, well more specifically the characters, there's just something great about connecting with a character, and I hope I can someday do the same for someone else."
She hated that she had to answer questions to complete strangers, but she was a digimon of her word, and these seemed like good digimon so she was less reluctant. "Yesterday this kid, John Jourdain, moved into the dorm room that I had been huddled in for the past week or so, his uncle, Danial Jourdain, gave him these devices that I found out today are connected to the digital world, one of which is some kind of handheld that can summon digimon, the other is a laptop. He then proceeded to be vague about just what they did and said something like, 'you'll find out soon on your own', or something like that. It's just something is bothering me about his uncle, and I don't know if this is the case, but if he has plans for this kid and they would get him hurt, I would feel responsible, I just want to scratch my curiosity itch and potentially prevent something bad from happening, that's really all there is to this search."

“Interesting, that’s almost the whole reason I wanted a position in the world of gaming - I looked up to the protagonists and their values of justice I guess.” It was a bit of a loose term for the contract hacker, who had her own definition of justice, one that saw “being the bigger person” as complete and utter bullshit; unfortunately cheesy philosophy didn’t stop people from being jerks, and so Bad Request took matters into their own hands. “That and the 64 kept us distracted from all the stuff happening.” After that, it was all too common for the children to constantly receive desirable gifts from either parent who always seemed to be one upping one another, always in some kind of competition - it was something that had unfortunately never changed to the present age - the day after she’d moved into her apartment, Talia found a package from her mother containing a brand new Kitchenaid Stand Mixer and a package from her father with a Le Creuset dutch oven, aka consumerism with a dash of parenting. “I’m sure you’ll be able to! With the best characters, I’ve found the creativity always shines through.”
The twins gasped upon hearing that the fox suspected John’s uncle could be potentially evil. “What?! Is he after his money? I’ve seen that a lot in TV shows,” Simba said as he continued to sift through the files. “Ah ha! Found them.” Tohru thought for a second, put a paw on her chin. “It’s true, it always seems to be a jealous relative. We should spy on this Uncle!”

John grinned at the mention of the 64 "Oh yeah the N64, that was a fun console, my favorite game there was Kirby 64, been a fan of the series ever since." John remembered all the time he spent on that console, and the amount of times he replayed the Kirby game trying out the different combinations that game had. "So I'm wondering, are there any places where people go for fun around here? I just got to this place yesterday and I'd like some recommendations from someone who's been here a while."
Viximon chuckled at the idea that the twins threw out, "No I don't think that's the case, from the sounds of it the uncle seemed to have a good amount of money, I don't really have evidence to support him having good or bad intentions, but hopefully finding something here will change that." Having heard that they found it made her eyes light up, "Ah great, please hand them over." After they did, Viximon saw that it was a hand written letter telling the school that John would be enrolling to the school, she began to read it out.
"Dear Shibuya School Campus,
I have sent this letter along with a check for the enrollment fee for one John Jourdain, he may be enrolling late in the school year, but I assure you he is a good student and will work hard to get good grades, I will also pay for his school supplies, dorm and uniform, I hope this will be sufficient for his acceptance.
Sincerely yours, Daniel Jourdain."
Viximon was unable to see anything wrong with the letter, it seemed to just be someone who cared for his nephew, but then her eye's where drawn to the bottom of the letter that was written in digicode that said "Beware The Collector" She grinned at finding something, "Well well, it seems our uncle knows how to write in digicode, I thought he knew about digimon but this confirms my suspicions, "Beware The Collector", huh? Well other than that last line this seems like he's an okay guy, even then he's trying to warn someone, still what is this a collector of?" She handed the letter back to the hackmon to put back in the drawer it was found in as she gathered up the documents to put away, as she finished she heard someone was heading to their location, "Uh oh, we need to get out of here." She whispered as she headed to the door to wait for an opening of escape.

“Hmmm.” Surprisingly Talia blanked on the fun thing - let’s just say she didn’t really too much besides work these days. “Well I know going to public arcades are a big thing here! Definitely more popular than they are in the states - it’s so funny how one society can look down upon something like video games and see it as a devils creation and in another it’s practically part of the culture.” What else did kids even do here for...fun? “There’s tons of cafes too! And shopping I guess. Sorry I’m not that good at the fun thing, but the best to really do I think is just explore on your own if that makes sense?” She’d been here for a year, but was much older than this kid had been when she’d moved. “Also the movies!” While talking, Talia finally noticed how oddly quiet the duffel bag holding the twins was - she had assumed they fell asleep but knew them well enough by now they’d never sleep that long. “Excuse me I just have to check something!” Sure, enough the bag was empty, causing Talia to panic slightly but kept quiet as to not make a scene with all the people in the room. “Uhh sorry, I think I dropped my...keys in the hallway!” She rushed out of the hall abruptly, glancing this way and that way until a shady looking figure cause the blonde to hide by a corner, a figure whom she quietly followed. “Come this way,” Tohru place the small fox behind one of her ears and Simba in the other one, the bundled group hiding under a dark table where they were mostly hidden from the figure in the room, and while they seemed to be preoccupied, went to sneak out through the cracked door. You only could imagine the expression on Talias face when she saw the rabbit, the dragon and the newcomer fox come out bundled up like some kind of silly disguise, the blonde whispering angrily. “You! And you! You’re both grounded for a month, and I don’t know who you are fuzzy little fox but you’re grounded too!”
