The sweltering sting of the desert sun shone upon the monolith of a woman and her frog dragon. Yukiko and Mizu were sent to conduct a study in small villages around the Desert, as Ayumi was greatly interested in how the small communities manage to deal with the difficulty of the desert. They had been lent the Ayumimobile, whose hoverwheels made it easy to traverse the scorching sand. Mizu was wearing sunglasses and was sunbathing on the backseat while Yukiko followed a signal from a village Ayumi had pointed out to her.
"Aaaaah, are we there soon? I'm drying up back here!"
Yukiko, who was totally focused on driving due to her lack of familiarity with the vehicle, took a couple of seconds to react.
"A-a-a-a-ah! Th-th-th-the village should be just beyond this hill! W-w-w-w-we can stock up on water there!"
Mizu giggled in response, and resumed sunbathing.
And, indeed, behind the hill, there was a village!...a rather dried out village. Digimon, huddled up in cloaks to shield them from the sun, were sitting around, looking dehydrated and depressed. As human and tamer left the car to explore the village by themselves, they looked in luster-less, apathetic eyes. Mizu eventually approached a Guilmon wearing a cloak.
"'Scuse me, sir, where do we get some water around here?"
The Guilmon stared at Mizu, then gave a loud, humourless laughter.
"Apologies, madam. If we knew where to get water from, we would not look so dried out, would be."
Mizu blinked, and sheepishly looked away. Yukiko looked around, concerned.
"S-s-s-so there's no water around here?"
"Aye."
"Th-th-th-then how do you survive out here?"
"Barely."
The Guilmon laughed again, then coughed as sand was caught in his dried out throat.
"It wasn't always like this, you know. Up until five weeks ago, we had plenty of water. This place used to be a veritable oasis."
Indeed, there were still hints of that around here. Dried out palm trees, patches of brown, dusty grass. A few gnarled roots sticking out of the ground. There used to be -life- around here.
"A-a-a-ah! W-w-w-what happened?"
The Guilmon stroked his chin.
"About five weeks ago, we were awoken at night by a strange sound coming from the spring. The mayor went to investigate, but there was a flash of purple light, and then he was gone. The next morning our spring had run dry, the central water production program had been stolen, leaving us with nothing."
"And no one went to look for it."
"Oh, sure we did. We sent multiple expedition parties out. But the few that returned only spoke of a Beast that is now viciously guarding the only source of water around."
"E-e-e-eh? A Beast?"
"Aye. Some form of big red beast, it lives in the water, and viciously attacks anyone who comes close to the water, draining them of what little water is left in their bodies."
"Whoa, that sounds terrifying!"
"Aye, it is. Since we cannot approach the nearest spring without getting drained even more, and since the next closest spring is about one day travel away from here and the sun would evaporate most of it in transit, we are doomed to just waste away, drying out in the sun, until nothing but our husks remains."
There was silence, only broken up by the Guilmon's raspy, dry sigh of resignation. Eventually, Yukiko spoke.
"W-w-w-we will take care of that Beast!"
The Guilmon gave her an incredulous look.
"Are you mad? Do you want to end up like us?"
Mizu posed and winked.
"Hey, we're kinda amazing, if anyone can deal with it, it's us!"
The Guilmon stared, then shook his head.
"I cannot stop you. Go, and do what you can do. If you can succeed, then you will be a hero. If you do not, then I hope your souls will find peace in the desert."
Yukiko gulped, not liking this pessimism, but she was now set on going. Then she suddenly remembered something.
"Oh! Before I forget!"
She ran back to the Ayumimobile, and rummaged around in the trunk. Then, she carried over a huge ice box, plopping it down near the dried out spring. The townsfolk gathered, curious about what is in the box. Inside were...dozens over dozens of water bottles.
"Th-th-these are usually for explorers, b-b-but you need them way more! W-w-we can just take the car to the nearest spring, d-d-don't worry!"
The townsfolk didn't even question her, they just threw over the icebox, everyone gathering as many bottles as they could. The Guilmon, himself carrying about 3 bottles, gave Yukiko a weak smile.
"It would seem that you have become a hero for us even before facing the Beast. Thank you. This may only last us a few weeks more, but that is better than nothing. Perhaps these few weeks can be our salvation. May you return from your meeting with the Beast unscathed. You can find it Northeast of here."
He bowed, and returned to the shade of the buildings. Mizu grinned.
"Heheheh, that was really nice of you, Yuki!"
"E-e-e-eh, that was the least I could do! C-c-c-ome on, we have a Beast to slay!"
The Tamer then walked on ahead, with unusual zeal in her gait. Mizu hopped after her, quite happy about Yuki's determination!
The trek up the dunes was arduous, and the sun did not help, but Human and Tamer were driven by a desire to help these people. And, soon enough, they spotted the nearby oasis. A large, lush lake, surrounded by vegetation. This was, ostensibly, where the Beast was supposed to dwell. As Yuki and Mizu scaled down the dunes, they approached slowly, eyes open.
"W-w-what do you think this Beast is like?"
"Whatever it is, it has no chance against our amazing teamwork!~"
Yuki giggled quietly, and snuck into the undergrowth of the oasis. While they were not the stealthiest, the thickness of the vegetation still allowed them to conceal themselves sufficiently. The two walked along the edge of the lake, until eventually they came upon the Beast. There was no mistaking it. Such a Digimon could only be described as a Beast. A large, red crocodile, with two tails, and black armor on its long snout. It was sleeping in the muck of the shoreline, breathing out smoke as it dozed. The Super Scanner told her that this was a Leviamon, albeit a weak one, at the Armor Ultimate level.
"Uuuh, s-s-seems we have found the Beast...wh-what do we do, Mizu?"
No reply.
"...M-m-m-mizu?
The Betamon was staring at the red crocodile, shivering and trembling.
"A-a-are you oka-"
Before she could finish, Mizu darted out of the cover, towards the crocodile.
"Ah, Mizu, no!"
She did not listen. She was hellbent on attacking! Yuki got out her digivice, to allow her to digivolve...but it did not work. Their bond was broken up from Mizu's clouded mind! She was singlemindedly focussed on the crocodile! She then jumped at it, and rammed her teeth into its arm.
"FUCKING DIE YOU DISGUSTING FUCKING DIGITAL SCUM I WILL FUCKING KILL YOU!"
She screamed these words with a primordial, unusual fury, loud enough to wake the Leviamon from its slumber. It looked down at the angry Betamon that was tearing into its flesh, and was neither amused nor impressed. At worst, it stung a bit. With little effort, it shook her off.
But, this did not stop her. She ran right back, eager to attack again.
"M-m-m-mizu, please, stop!"
Yukiko's pleas fell on deaf ears. Now, Mizu was trying to bite off the Leviamon's tail. This made it growl.
"Insignificant waterhoarding insect...give me back what is mine..."
Without warning, it rammed the tip of one of its tails into Mizu's side, and began to drain her body fluid. The Betamon's screams of fury grew weaker fast.
Yukiko had to act. She was watching her partner getting drained of her life, and any second of hesitation could spell certain doom for the Betamon. So, without thinking, she grabbed a rock, and tossed it at the Leviamon's head. This successfully distracted it.
"Hrngh. Who dares?"
"I do!"
The human stood before the crocodile, whose snout was already as long as she was tall. This show of bravado was quite bemusing to the Leviamon. It let out a deep, sinister chuckle.
"Yet another waterhoarding creature that dares to face me? Very well, let me show you what happens to those that keep water from me!"
It then let go of the dried out Mizu to stab Yukiko with both its tails. But, the human anticipated this, and rolled aside. Luckily for Yukiko, the crocodile was far from the most agile itself, allowing her to outmaneuver it. The Leviamon growled again, and tried to stab her, but she was able to roll aside once more. The third time, the tail managed to almost hit her, but by then Yuki had managed to grab Mizu, and hightailed out of the Oasis. The Leviamon followed for a while. Then blew smoke after them.
"Humph. Small fry. Not worth my time. But know that when you return, your water will be mine again."
It then turned, and walked back to the oasis.
Yukiko carried Mizu over the dunes, into the shade, and sat down to catch her breath. The Betamon was still alive, but badly dehydrated. The Leviamon had just sucked the moisture out of her body. Yukiko had to rehydrate her, fast! But...how? She left all the bottles of water at the village...
...there was one water source. She knew, she knew that Mizu could drink almost anything to rehydrate. Coffee, gelatin, even sea water...
...the sea was in everyone...
...where did she put her pocket knife...?
Mizu slowly came back to her senses. As if she had been pulled from a haze of rage and death, she returned to the world of the living. The first thing she noticed was that she was laying on her back. The second thing she noticed was that weird slime ran out of her nostrils.
The third thing she noticed was that Yukiko was pressing her heavily bleeding hand into her mouth.
The Betamon made a strange, throaty sound in shock and tried to get back upright, but Yukiko held her down with her other hand, shushing her.
"Ah, you're awake again, thank goodness. I was really worried you were a goner."
After feeding her a bit more, she retrieved her hand, took off her tank top and wrapped it around her hand to stop the bleeding.
Mizu quickly got back onto her legs, and coughed.
"Y-y-y-yuki! Are you crazy? What happened to your hand??"
"Simple: I cut a gash into my hand so I could rehydrate you with my blood."
Mizu blinked. Yuki was calm, and treated this like the most normal thing ever.
"W-w-w-what the hell?? Why would you do that?? You could have died!"
Yuki gave her a warm smile.
"If I had not done this, you would have died. I felt that was the worse risk."
Mizu stared at her partner, tears welling up in her eyes, then she rushed her face first and buried it in Yukiko's lap. Yuki just patted her.
"Ah ah aaaah, you should not waste any more water."
Mizu looked up at her, eyes glistening with tears.
"H-h-h-how can I not?! Y-y-you risked your life for mine! Th-th-that is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me! H-h-h-ow could I ever repay you?"
"If you could tell me why you just rushed the Leviamon, that would be sufficient."
The Betamon hesitated. Yuki stroked her back, letting her decide when to speak.
"...before dad took me in...I saw how my parents died...they were...eaten alive...by a giant red crocodile Digimon...I was just a tiny Pitchmon...there was nothing I could do...without dad I wouldn't have survived...I...I..."
Yukiko shushed her, holding her until she stopped shivering. The two remained silent for a while, just thinking. Eventually, Mizu spoke up again.
"...we still need to take care of that Leviamon."
"Ah, yes, we do. Will you help me this time?"
The Betamon grinned widely at her tamer.
"But of course!"
The Leviamon was lazing about at the lakeshore again, satisfied. It had regained some of its water from the tiny green thing, and the bigger, brown thing ran away, too. Surely, things were going great.
Suddenly, however, it heard a noise. It opened one eye. The noise came closer. It sounded like a large vehicle or something rushing towards the lake. Hrrrr, don't these fools ever learn? It got back onto its feet, ready to take on whatever foolish thing decided to disturb it today.
And the thing that decided to disturb it was Mizu, digivolved to MegaSeadramon. Atop her head, holding onto the helmet, was Yukiko. Both of them looked down at the now smaller Leviamon.
"It appears we meet again."
The Leviamon hesitated. It had not planned for someone =strong= to come here! It blew smoke again.
"J-j-j-ust because you got bigger doesn't mean I won't get my water back from you!"
Mizu grinned.
"I don't think so, bucko! Thunder Javelin!"
A lightning bolt arced from Mizu's horn towards the Leviamon. The bulky Digimon managed to barely avoid it by rolling to the side. It hissed, cloaking its head in smoke.
"You're forcing my hand! Anima!"
The smoke formed into a vicious tornado, which headed right for the two! Mizu was distracted as she wound around it. By then, Leviamon had swum out onto the lake, figuring it would have superior mobility in the water. It had, however, forgotten that Mizu was just as seaworthy as it was. The MegaSeadramon followed it into the lake, catching up and snapping at it with her jaws!
"Hey, no running away!"
"Fool! No one bests me in my element! Cauda!"
The crocodile lashed out with its tail, but this time, Mizu caught it in her maw. Then, she wrapped herself around it, squeezing it. The Leviamon hissed and thrashed, splashing water everywhere. Yuki held on to Mizu's hair, trying not to be thrown off.
"Your first, and greatest, mistake was underestimating us. Now, it is time for -you- to return the water."
From her position, Mizu electrified her horn, and rammed it into the Leviamon's side.
"Thunder Blade!"
The Leviamon screeched in pain as the electricity coursed through its body. Eventually, it fell limp. Mizu was about to let it go, but Yuki intervened.
"Get it to the shore. Don't let it drown."
"Eh? After everything it did??"
"Yes, because if we let it die we wouldn't be much better. Besides, what better way to punish it than letting it watch how its precious water is taken away?"
Mizu giggled.
"Man, Yuki, gal, you can be vicious!~"
So, the two carried the Leviamon back onto the shore. It laid there for a bit, then, it began to glow, to the surprise of both Tamer and Digimon. Its form shrunk, and eventually the light dissipated, revealing an unconscious FlaWizardmon, a strange, glowing blue orb, and a dark purple egg which gave off a dark aura. Yukiko tried to get closer, but the blood loss and heat finally took the toll on her body.
"Agh, Yuki, watch out!"
That was the last thing Yuki heard before she fainted.
Eventually, Yukiko woke up.
She found herself inside a house, in a bed. Next to her were Mizu, the Guilmon from earlier, and the FlaWizarmon. Mizu immidiately hugged her tamer when she came to.
"Ah! Yuki! You're alright!"
"Uh, y-y-yeah...w-w-w-hat happened?"
The FlaWizarmon cleared his throat.
"It would appear you two saved me. If I may introduce myself, I am the mayor of this little village. While my memory is highly fuzzy, it seems that about five weeks ago we were shaken awake by a sound. I went to investigate, and I found this strange, dark purple egg. I tried to take it, but it jumped at me. From then, I remember nothing, until I woke up next to you and your friend."
The Guilmon nodded.
"It would appear this egg has taken possession of our mayor, and turned him into the Beast. He then stole our central water production program, and hoarded water by the oasis."
The FlaWizarmon looked down to the ground.
"I cannot even begin to imagine what horrors I inflicted upon my people in my posession. How can I ever come up for this?"
Yuki tried to sit up, but Mizu pressed her down again.
"A-a-ah, this w-w-was out of your control! P-p-please don't blame yourself! We have banished the Beast, n-n-n-ow you just need to be a good mayor again."
The FlaWizarmon then looked at her, and smiled.
"I guess this is a start. I cannot even begin to thank you for saving our village. Without you, I would have remained a beast, and my people would have perished."
The Guilmon then reached down, and handed Yuki two large, ornate fruit.
"Please, take these. These are our greatest treasures, and we are to give them to our greatest hero. By saving us, you have become our hero."
Yuki blushed, flustered by all this praise, and accepted these fruit.
"A-a-ah, th-thank you...I j-j-just did what anyone would do..."
"Hey, you saved my life at risk of your own, that's beyond what normal people would do!"
Yuki smiled awkwardly. Then, suddenly, the fruit in her hands began to glow. Everyone watched in amazement as the leaves around them unfurled, revealing two Digimentals.
"H-h-h-huh?"
"Ah, it appears these were meant for you after all. You deserve them."
Yuki blinked, then smiled and nodded.
"Th-th-thanks...I will cherish them..."
Then she turned to Mizu.
"W-w-we should get them to Ayumi for analysis fast!"
"Hehehe, oh yeah! Alongside..."
She looked over to the dark purple egg, now secured in a glass case.
"...that thing."
It would seem that there were more mysteries awaiting discovery in the future.
Yukiko recieved the Digimentals of Kindness and Charity, alongside an unknown corrupted, unusable egg.
