"An engineer, are you?" Leith had to lift one eyebrow at that out of surprise and intrigue. "An engineer who likes belly rubs. But, no joke, that's actually impressive."
"Hey, look!" Since Veemon was sitting closer to the window than Leith, it was only natural he'd been glancing out of it and noticed what he was about to announce slightly before his Tamer. "We're pulling in!" The young man's small smile dropped almost as fast as his heart did. That was when both began looking out the window for their mark, and again it was Veemon who spotted it first. "Aaaand... there! That's the Renamon!" The train was still going reasonably fast when it passed the yellow fox sitting on a bench, but Leith and Veemon were still able to make out her facial expression: she was smiling warmly as if expecting her son or an old friend to hop off the Trailmon.
Leith checked his D-3. "No new messages... maybe this is where the runaround finally stops? Hey, uh, who knows? Maybe this'll end well. I mean, Niko said 'I'm a friend,' after all, right?" Veemon clearly didn't buy it, and obviously neither did Leith even.
The Buffalo Trailmon promptly announced, "It's Trailmon Terminal, people! Trailmon Terminal! If you want out, now's the time! It's Trailmon Terminal!"
"Which stop is this again?" Leith groaned, covering his ears. He rose then, followed by Veemon, and tried to make it to the nearest door of the train with as little physical contact with others as possible. Almost there, though, he froze. His heart rate accelerated like a sports car. His breath instantly became heavy as a Whamon. Suddenly all sound was amplified, and all light was brighter. Every little bump of the exiting passengers whose way he was blocking felt as forceful as a punch, even if not as painful. At least recognized his own symptoms as one of his panic attacks, but this was about the worst possible place for one!

Bellamy snickered again, but Luke merely gave a smile at the praise. "Thanks. Colin's dad is an engineer too, I learned out of his textbooks" the Elecmon explained. "Although I can't actually do much of the building side of things, you know, these aren't fingers" he held up his claws, three on each paw.
As they passed between the dimensional barrier between Earth and the Digital World, Colin and his partners felt a distinct feeling of something like weak static electricity roll over them, as they passed from the world of matter to the world of data. It was always an odd kind of feeling, but by now they were used to it.
And not long after, the skyscrapers and urban cityscape of Terminus filled the window as they pulled into the station. The brakes were engaged and before long, the train had come to a stop.
If Leith hadn't said it, Bellamy certainly would have. That Trailmon sure was insistant with his announcement. And soon everyone made to get off the train. Colin and the twins were behind Leith, so they were a little curious when he seemed to freeze up.
"Everything okay, Leith?" Colin asked, hoping it was so. At least he hoped that the older tamer realized that he wasn't alone here.

"No, guys, just- s-s-s-stop." Leith didn't intend to be rude with that command, but he gave it to the young Tamer and his friends in the same tone of voice he'd have said it to a grossly misbehaving child.
Veemon looked a little hurt himself by the comment, but at least he was able to serve as a sort of emotional translator fro Leith. "He gets like that sometimes, but usually only when he's somewhere loud and crowded."
"Yeah, well-" Leith sniffed and rubbed his watering eyes as he interje"cted, "A train to the digital world ain't exactly zen!" His tone seemed to have gone from quiet and a little preoccupied to lashing out.
Veemon didn't buy that explanation; it was a ride Leith had taken before with more people and showed less symptoms. I guess the stress is part of it, too. Normally Veemon would take his Tamer to a quieter place to cool down, but when he offered, "Should we-?" Leith shut that idea down.
"No, got stuff to do. Just... deal with me a while. Thanks in advance." That was probably about the closest to a heartfelt thank you Leith was capable of giving Colin and co at the time. It seemed that the young man had at least managed to keep himself from breaking down and crying, but as he left the train with Veemon in tow he was still frowning, grinding his teeth and breathing heavy. Still, it couldn't go away until the young man walked right up to the stranger Renamon, walked right up to her, and demanded, "Who are y-"
"Chuji!" This Renamon stood, yelled that, and approached before Leith could get a word out, making Leith jump back, startled. But she didn't make for Leith; she made for Veemon. Veemon adopted a confrontational stance, but the Renamon completely ignored that, knelt down to be closer in height to Veemon and... hugged him.
"Uh-!"
Then she turned to Leith. "And Tsugi! Wow, you've really grown up! How'd you get so much taller than your sister?"
Veemon was apparently too polite to resist the hug but also too awkward and unsure to give the hug back to the Renamon. He looked to Leith for guidance, but Leith's expression was about the same; the Tamer, in turn, looked to Colin, nonverbally conveying his shock, confusion, and utter disbelief. It seemed he was just stunned at the moment.

Colin was a little startled at Leith's tone, but backed off a little regardless, supposing that he was worried and panicking. Bellamy and Luke remained silent too, the twin digimon glancing at Veemon in case he wanted to tell them what was up.
"Ah, okay" Luke said, nodding respectfully. They would patiently wait until Leith regained his composure before continuing on.
"Eh, we don't blame ya, must be a lot to take in, just casually takin' a train trip to another world" Bellamy added with a shrug. It was clear to the trio that Leith seemed to be struggling a little with the pressure of being new to the digital world, so they'd take care not to give him any extra stress.
When he was ready, they followed him off the Trailmon and onto the platform. Bellamy gave a thumbs-up to the Trailmon Buffalo as they passed, he was always thankful to the machine digimon to provide this service.
When they reached the Renamon, Colin and his partners were surprised when she called Leith and Veemon different names to those they had introduced themselves as. Luke tilted his head.
"Chuji and Tsugi?" the Elecmon repeated. "Uh, is she confused or...?" he wasn't sure what to make of this. Leith turned to Colin with a stunned expression, who seemed to also be unsure how to approach this. Fortunately the more streetwise Bellamy had an idea of how to approach this.
"Uh, no offense, lady, but, I think you might have a case of mistaken identity here" the Impmon said. "This guy's Leith and this guy's... just Veemon I guess?" he looked at the blue dragon. "Do you have a name or...?" he wasn't sure himself. For all he knew Veemon could be named Chuji. But he was fairly certain that humans only went by one name.

"No, he doesn't. I've just been calling him Veemon, and he's just gone with it."
"I think-"
"Oh, I'd recognize this face anywhere!" The voice on this Renamon was a little dry and raspy, making Leith think perhaps she was much older than her outward appearance let on. "Do you know these two?" Now she was speaking to Colin. "When I nearly lost my family to that pesky flock of pteramon, this little guy-" The Renamon pinched 'Chuji's' cheeks like a grandmother might her grandchild's, something Veemon tried to rotate his face away from but failed. "-digivolved to a huge form and shot them all down with one blast! Then they safely brought us here, where we settled down again." To Leith she then asked, "But why don't you visit anymore? I see your sister every week, but she said you've been home."
Do- do we have the wrong Renamon somehow? Leith considered.
After one more cheek pinch, Veemon had had just about enough of this complete and utter personal space violation, so he wrestled himself free of the embrace. Still, he was polite as he could be when he informed the Renamon, "You got it wrong. I don't know you, my name's not Chuji, and he's not Tsugi. I'm just Veemon, and he's Leith... and that's Colin, Luke and Bellamy."
"Look, where's Niko?" Leith demanded that of the Renamon quite rudely. "You have something to do with her. Why'd she want me to meet you? Is that the chick you think is my 'sister?'"
Only at this point did it seem the message finally got through to the Renamon. "You're... oh. But, Veemon, you look just like him! And Tsugi, your sister said you'd be-"
"Leith!" the young man sharply corrected.
"I... sorry to bother you." Renamon looked quite depressed when the truth sank in; whoever these other two were, they were clearly important to her. Veemon looked like he wanted to say something to console her, but Leith took one of the blue digimon's arms in his hands and pulled him away to cut the interaction as short as he could. He even took Colin by the arm and dragged him away somewhere more private, too.
"Hey! Now you're just being mean!" Veemon scolded his Tamer.
Leith paid him little mind. "I've got more important things to worry about than some stranger's feelings." It turned out Leith had a point; after claiming that, he held up his D-3 on his wrist, opened the D-Terminal program, and went into the messages. Then he opened the newest one for the others to read.
I needed proof for what I'm about to tell you. Now you have it. There's one last stop I need you to make. This time you need to come alone. I'll be at the following coordinates.
Attached was an image that looked like a map with a red cross marked on it way out in the middle of the Network Plains. Leith then turned to Colin and asked, "Well this sucks more balls than a game of Hungry Hungry Hippos. You're the digital world expert, though. Where is that, and how do we get there?"

Colin was starting to think that this Renamon might be unfortunately succumbing to the effects of old age. Which was strange because he didn't know digimon aged, but, giving a look at his partners, he supposed that like humans, there was probably a limit to how long they could live without reverting to a digiegg. Only unlike humans, they would then be reborn fresh.
"I just met them basically" he answered Renamon honestly. "And, well, that was nice of Chuji and Tsugi" he added, still keeping them separately from Leith and Veemon in his mind.
"Exactly how long ago was this, madam?" Luke asked out of curiosity.
But it seemed that this was a case of mistaken identity after all, and Renamon looked genuinely sad and disappointed at being proven wrong. "Sorry about that, but we hope you find them one day" Colin said. It was probably an easy mistake to make. There were quite a lot of Renamons in the world after all, and perhaps this one was looking out for two that looked like Leith and Veemon?
"H-hey!" Colin complained as Leith grabbed his arm, which made Bellamy instantly glare.
"Hey, don't you grab our partner like that!" the Impmon snapped. "That's not a cool thing to do!" he and Luke ran at his side. But Colin wasn't struggling to get loose, he simply went along with Leith for the time being.
When they stopped, Bellamy was still glaring at the other tamer. "Don't do that again, capische?" he said, crossly.
Still, Colin was calm about it and patted Bellamy's shoulder to calm him down. He then looked at the message and then the map.
"Ah, the Network Plains, they surround all of Terminus" he said, scratching his chin. "Getting there would be fairly easy. We just have to change platforms for a line that goes out that way".
Still though, the fact that something seemed to know exactly what was going on around him was disturbing. Colin hoped that it was something they could handle. Powerful digimon didn't tend to go after new people to the digital world like this, unless they had a history.
"Now, this looks like it's on the Whitewater line, so we'd better head to..." Luke began, looking up at the departure information screens. "Platform 4" he concluded. The Southern Network Plains wasn't too hazardous after all, there were a few villages of digimon that way.

For once, Leith actually showed a little remorse when Bellamy chewed him out. He lowered his head, averted eye contact, let go of Colin, and mumbled, "Sorry. I shouldn't be dragging a kid around like that. I just needed out of there fast." To Veemon he noted, "That renamon seemed very sure she recognized you."
"I told you I don't know anything!" The fact that Veemon was so defensive made the young man think he'd spoken too bluntly and sounded accusatory. Again, he looked away in shame.
Alright... take a breath. I'm gonna piss everyone off if I'm not a bit more diplomatic. Or worse. After reminding himself of that, Leith got to his real point: "I know. But Niko called me 'the guy with the Veemon.' I think she identified me by you - and I think she might be mistaking you for someone else just like Renamon did. Granted, I have no idea how that helps us, but no information is bad information." Finally, he looked at someone again: Colin. "Sorry and thanks. Can we just get going? And, uh... make sure to glance over your shoulder occasionally." At that point, Leith made for platform 4 with Veemon in tow. If I was in Colin's position, I would've broken off soon as I found out I was lied to. And if I were in Veemon's position... I would have been done with my own crap months ago.

Well, at least he apologized. "Alright" the Impmon said. As long as it didn't happen again, that'd be the end of the matter, he wasn't one to hold grudges. With confusion high in the air, that brought with it some tension it seemed. Colin tried hard to sum up what he knew. "Well... maybe it was meant to see if you followed instructions?" he suggested. "Niko probably knew that the Renamon had a past with some Veemon and a tamer in the past and would mistake you for them?""Guess that makes sense" Luke agreed. "But it's probably not important right now. What is important is that why he wants us to go out of the city now?"Bellamy frowned. "Yeah, outta the city, where there's less people around to help" he mused. Bellamy referred to both humans and digimon as 'people'. "Well, if this 'Niko' guy's gonna try somethin', seems like the place to do it"."We don't know that for sure though, Bells" Colin pointed out. Still though, it all seemed very fishy and suspicious. But, Colin hadn't yet come across a problem in the digital world he hadn't been able to overcome, so, he didn't feel fearful quite yet.
Soon, they reached the rail platform marked with a '4', and as luck would have it, there was a Trailmon Angler there, seemingly minutes from departure. If there were no other impediments, Colin and his partners would board one of the three carriages, ready for the journey across the Network Plains.

Leith was stone-cold silent throughout the train ride and refused to even make eye contact with anybody. Veemon was the only talkative one or the two on the trip, and even then it was clear he was just trying to keep his mind off what ever he and Leith were about to walk into. The digimon was half tempted to demand they turn around right at the stop and forget about the entire crazy thing, but he also knew this was a conversation already had and decided. Unfortunately, Niko's directions weren't as easy as getting off a train; Colin had to be the one to lead the way from there to reach the flat, empty area where Niko claimed she would be.
In this place everyone could see all around for miles, it seemed, and yet at the same time there was nothing at all to see except lots of grass and the horizon. A slight breeze blew that made the grass sway and reflect light to almost look like waves in the ocean. Even though it was still a bright, sunny day, neither too warm nor too cold for comfort, Leith himself couldn't shake the feeling of impending dread, like he knew he bombed a test and was just waiting to receive the F. "Well... we're here. Now what?" Leith checked his D-3's D-Terminal program again, but nothing new had arrived in his messages.

Throughout the train trip, Colin felt a little awkward about the whole thing. He didn't know what to make of Leith. While he knew he was a new person to the digital world, he just felt... standoffish and cold. It wasn't really something that Colin felt equipped to handle either. Since moving to Japan, he mainly only had Luke and Bellamy as his friends, both of which were warm and cheerful. Maybe his sister Sophie might have been able to socialize better? Colin always kind of struggled with that.
Still though, Luke and Bellamy cheerfully conversed with Veemon about minutae and absurdities in their lives. Nothing particularly heavy, just making smalltalk.
When they disembarked on the small platform on the plains, they would then proceed to the destination. Despite the peaceful setting, wind blowing through their hair and fur, there was a definite feeling of unease that was happening here.
"Should we digivolve, Colin?" Luke asked his partner unsurely.
"Not just yet" Colin answered. Digivolving used up energy and wasting it on nothing would be undesirable. Plus, he had learned that sometimes it was best to only digivolve once the threat showed itself. Unsurely, he and his partners waited along with Leith and Veemon.
"Hope he's just runnin' late" Bellamy remarked, the Impmon folding his arms as he looked around the fields for any sign of others.

"Niko can also be a female name, remember," Veemon finally pointed out in response to hearing Bellamy once again call the unknown male.
"You know, that's what I kinda assumed at first," Leith piled on, "But now I'm thinking we're dealing with a dude. Only a guy be such an asshat about what he wants and be such a control freak and toy with us like pawns."
"Wrong again." Veemon, on hearing the Engish-speaking voice, turned around to see a girl something like 16 and of clear Japanese descent with an accent to match in a practical pair of sneakers, simple blue jeans, and a bright green tank top standing behind the quintet. She smiled gently and stepped forward. The digimon that followed her was an Armadillomon who looked like it didn't know whether to laugh or cry and might have been about to resort to either at any moment.
"Nice to finally meet you! I'm Niko." The girl held out a friendly hand like she had expected this to be a friendly-meet and greet, and Armadillomon did the same to Veemon. Only now did Tamer cautiously, warily shook hands with the stranger, but Veemon's response was colder; he withheld his hand entirely.
"Miyuki!" was how the Armadillomon introduced herself to Veemon, "I guess you don't remember us anymore, but... i-it's really good to s-see you."
As the duo moved on to offer their hand or paw to Colin and company, Veemon defiantly shouted, "I don't know you! Neither does Leith. What do you want?"
"And why didn't you say something when we met on the damn train?" The young man added, "What was that, anyway? Some taunt?"
At this Niko smiled still and turned to look at Leith while still holding a hand out to Colin. "Actually, I really wanted to find a seat. I didn't know you were in there."

"Hm? Oh, right" Bellamy said, realizing that the gender of the stranger in question wasn't yet known. Colin had doubts about Leith's logic, assholes could come in any shape or gender, but remained silent for the moment.
They then turned to see the new arrival. It was a Japanese girl that looked like she was Colin's age. It took a moment, but Colin suddenly remembered her as the passer-by on the Trailmon here. And it seemed she had an Armadillomon partner.
"Ah, hey there" he said at first, then realized what was going on. "Wait, you're Niko?" he asked, a little startled by that. Her actions on the train and through the messages on the digivice made no sense. Although her explanation was acceptable he supposed.
And once again they mistook Veemon's identity, the Armadillomon naming Veemon "Miyuki". Colin raised an eyebrow, this was starting to get kinda suspicious. This was twice now that Leith and Veemon had been identified as others.
Still though, nothing hostile had happened yet, so Colin shook Niko's hand politely. Just as long as they didn't get weirder by calling Bellamy "Bob" or Luke "Janet" or something like that.
"Hi there, I'm Colin" he said. "And these are my partners Luke and Bellamy" he added, just to make sure the previous thought didn't actually happen.
"Yo" Bellamy said, arms still folded, his tail flicking a little. "So, guess you're the one that's been sendin' Leith those messages, huh? What's all this about anyways?"
Luke clapped a paw to his own face as once again Bellamy proved he had the subtlety of a Sydney pride parade, but didn't say anything, given that they seemed to now be a part of whatever was going on. It was about time that they got to the bottom of this.

Glad I'm not the only one eager to get to the point.
"Sorry! Sorry! Look, I wanted to just say it to your face, but you never would have believed me." Leith recognized the laugh then as a sort of awkward laugh, one meant to fill dead space in conversation or stall for time to think of what to say next. "This is, uh... it's, like, really, really awkward, but, uh... you're not supposed to be Veemon's partner?"
"Alright, I've heard enough!" Veemon reached for Leith's hand, then, which the Tamer let him take. "Let's just leave. Whatever she wants, she can't have it."
Unfortunately, Leith's curiosity overpowered his caution; he didn't move when pulled. "Oh, bullshit. I won't pretend I'm a perfect Tamer, but, uh... you know what this is, right?" Leith held up his left wrist and brandished the black and blue D-3 on it. The sight of it made Niko finally break friendly smile, though; instead, she frowned and turned away. Leith waited for her to explain herself, but she didn't. Luckily - or perhaps unluckily - that Armadillomon, Miyuki, did.
"That digivice used to belong to Niko's twin brother Tsugi. We were together when..." It seemed even Miyuki had trouble speaking now. "There was an ambush. Dragomon. We couldn't digivolve far enough, so we just never had a chance." Niko was trying not to let it show, but by now she was shedding a couple of tears. "Niko and I ran on foot. We got away. But Tsugi tried to open a portal where he was and escape through it with Chuuji - you. Neither of you survived."
"It's a lie!" Veemon shouted and stomped his foot in front of himself confrontationally, "I was always meant to be with Leith! That's why the digivice appeared to him! Leith, tell her!" But the young man bit his lip uncomfortably. "Leith!"
"I... I didn't actually see it appear. I just saw it lying there and picked it up while I was in-"
"-Miyashita Park?" It seemed that after wiping her nose and sniffing, Niko had managed to regain the power of speech, though her voice still quivered. "That's where we always used to leave from. We grew up near there. Tsugi always likes- liked seeing it before he did something dangerous in this world." Niko had to sniff again before going on, "I got you to meet Renamon as proof Chuuji had another life. It's all true, I swear! So I need you to do something for my brother's memory... please." The girl was full-on crying, now; her voice was getting hard to understand. But it was only just clear enough to comprehend as she held out her hand and begged Leith, "G-give his digivice back! And Chuuji! Please!"
It seemed the ball was in Leith's court now. Veemon was extremely troubled not to hear the young man immediately rebel and curse like a pirate who stepped on a Lego. Instead, the young man's face just looked troubled... conflicted, even.

Now this was truly getting weird. Niko stated that Veemon was not meant to be Leith's partner. "Hey! Don't say something like that lightly" Luke said, the Elecmon somewhat much more animated than normal. "What do you mean by that?"
Leith then proved his legitimacy by showing the digivice. That would hopefully be enough to prove that all this was a mistake, but, Niko's Armadillomon partner Miyuki explained that the digivice actually belonged to her twin brother. It turned out that this "Tsugi" individual had perished, and Veemon was apparently killed too, but reborn.
Luke and Bellamy's eyes widened at this news. Both of them knew the pain of losing someone so close to them, given in their previous lives as two solo digimon they had died together to be reborn as twins; partnered to Colin. And Colin, having siblings of his own would be horrified at the prospect of losing them.
None of them said a word, all of this sounded somewhat plausible. Then Niko asked him to give the digivice and Veemon back to her. But, to Colin and his partners, this seemed like a request too far.
"Hey, let's settle down here for a minute" Colin spoke up, speaking gently. "Listen... I'm very sorry for your loss. But, can we please hold up for a moment? You're asking for something that can't be given to you".
He nodded at Veemon. "Even what you say is true, Niko, Veemon's stated that he's Leith's partner. If that's what he truly believes, then that's something that can't be changed, and he can't just be taken against his will. But, well, I'm sure if we go about this the right way, you should be able to keep some kind of bond maybe?"
Colin looked at his own partners, hoping he was saying the right thing. Both Luke and Bellamy had awkward expressions on their faces, but remained silent. They didn't know how to approach this situation either. But Colin was approaching this as though someone had just walked up to him and told him that one of them was a partner to a dead human. It was their right to talk to them and get some closure perhaps, but it was not their right to take them.
"I don't pretend I know how all this works, with digimon, partnership, reconfiguration, but, I think we should approach this gently" he finished. Still a little unsure, as this was something that Colin had never dealt with before, but, he hoped he was being reasonable.

"Leith?" Just the fact that his Tamer didn't step up immediately broke Veemon's heart.
"To think, all that time I spent whining, and I can just give it all away... no more monsters, no more other dimensions, no more secrets, and no more almost getting killed over and over..." Leith glanced at Veemon before addressing Niko. "Colin? I think you're right. It's not that easy. You can't just go back to normal life after this." The boy knelt, then, to become about the same height as Veemon. "Kid... I'm really sorry about your brother, but taking something from me won't give you back what you lost. More importantly, though-" Even though Leith was still talking to the girl, he was now looking at Veemon. "Veemon was my first friend after moving. We're room mates, we're partners, and he's about the only person I know who can drag me out of my comfort zone and not make me hate them afterwards... and I gotta say, no matter how much I whine and groan, I wouldn't give him up for anything." Leith held out a fist, then, which Veemon needed no invitation to touch with his own. "So, please, thank you, have a nice day, and kindly fuck off."
Niko tried to continue pleading, "Please!" "Just go away already!" Veemon snapped at the girl. "Colin, Luke, Bellamy, Leith, enough of this! It was wrong to even come here. We're done. Leith's my partner, and that's it... no matter how rude or inconsiderate he can be sometimes. I wouldn't come back even if I could!"
"Right, I'm gonna go with the blue guy on this one. We're done. Colin, why don't I handle the holosuit repair? I might just have enough pocket change in bits for it, and after this shitshow it's the least I can-"
"-I can't believe you forgot all about our family."
"Will you just shut the fuck up?" Leith growled as he turned around. Turning around, however, turned out to be the wrong decision.
Niko bit her lip and mumbled, "I guess... there's no choice. Miyuki?"
Miyuki glared at the pair of Tamers and their digimon... just before her body began to glow. "Armadillomon, digivolve to..." She expanded and grew to a titanic size until she had become, "...Ankylomon!"
"Maybe another reconfiguration will bring your memory back!"
Miyuki digivolved to champion Ankylomon.
