Low and behold, Talia had managed to forget her wallet on this particular venture to the digital world, which of course meant one thing - two hungry whiny child digimon pulling on her legs with grumbling tummies. “But I want food now Talia! I won’t be able to function without it for much longer.” Even the normally mature Tohru was becoming a little hangry, and frankly driving the blonde nuts just as much as Simba was right now. “And just how am I supposed to get us anything if I have no cash?!” Apparently these twins had an answer for everything. “Make something!” Oh right, she could just go to the digital supermarket with an invisible wad of cash. “Hehehe, how about some grilled bark? Sounds appetizing enough right?”
Humor was a great option when these two were getting on her nerves, it was how she managed to stay sane after all. “Catch something!” Did they think their human was some kind of Outdoor Bob who knew how to hunt and fish? The only thing she’d done close to hunting ever was fighting over a package of center cut pork chops at the market with a middle aged woman twice her height and weight, hmm and as for fish, did it count she’d owned hermit crabs for like a month in third grade? “Me? You two are the predators, go do some obligatory predatoring and give me some peace and quiet!”
Neither out of the duo had ever hunted before, but both were a little curious to try upon it being mentioned, and opted to leave the woman to take a nap. “Be safe, Talia!” They would be okay by themselves for a little bit right? It wasn’t like the digital world was foreign to them, well in a way it was but at the same time it really wasn’t from a long term perspective. “You too guys, no going far...” Her words turned to mumbles as she dozed off being half asleep and half awake - the great wide open wilderness was definitely not the place for a full nap.
“What are we supposed to be hunting anyway? Deer don’t live in the digital world right?” They were a little big for the two to catch anyway. “Nope, I don’t even see birds or squirrels!” So what in the world were they supposed to eat? Tohru felt a little guilty when she heard her brothers stomach growl - she had to find food for him soon! What kind of sister would she be if she didn’t? As they wandered the forest, the rabbit couldn’t help but notice a flyer tacked to a tree with pictures of kung fu-ish looking digimon all posing, with the headline ‘King of Digital Fist Tournament - winner receives a dinner voucher for an all you can eat meat buffet!'
Talia meanwhile, had stirred from her slumber after hearing a bit of noise. “If you’re a burgular you’re out of luck, I left my wallet at home today - oh wait, I..know you uhh Katherine was it?” She recognized the girl but not the bunny who was with her which made the blonde somewhat comically jump to her feet. “You got a Lopmon too! This is great! Now where are my tw-” They came barreling out of the woods like mosquitos running from a garlic garden, the rabbit waving the flyer frantically. “TALIA! I’ve found a solution.”

The last two weeks had been crazy for Katherine and Jazz. They had stopped a criminal exchange aboard a train alongside Miyu and Bloom to save the life of a couple of bird digimon. Then, they have joined and won the great all-out race across the Binary Archipelago alongside Liquid, Amelie, and Ooi against all odds. There was no doubt their pass through the Southern region of the Digital World had been crazy and plagued with new experiences, to say the least. Apart from making great friends on the way and knowing all kind of digimon, these adventures had also brought them two more Zoid Gems; so while Katherine and Jazz walked through a small set of palm trees that barely constituted what could be called a jungle, not too far from Whitewater City, the Ochre Zoid Gem, the Lazuli Zoid Gem, and the Pearl Zoid Gem rested inside Katherine’s bag.
Jazz yawned, stretching her arms while the duo walked. –Why am I so sleepy? We slept a lot these past days! –The bunny rubbed her eyes with her hands. -That’s why I’m not a fan of sleeping much. –Her tamer kept looking around the jungle, fixing the fairly big straw hat she was wearing to protect herself from the sun, although the palm trees were already doing a pretty good job about that. –When you sleep too much, you just get lazy and want to sleep more. –The girl was also wearing a beautiful white and purple beach dress that went just a little over her knees and blue sandals. -Well, I was pretty tired after all that building the boat, and that racing… -The bunny just went on, while Katherine just checked the map on her digivice. As always, the exploring the Digital World while traveling was the favorite part of the duo, so they had decided to skip the Trailmon, and just make their way walking to whatever was next for them. They were planning to leave Whitewater for sure, and go on the look of the next gem. -… and the fighting and the saving and… -Jazz turned at her tamer, who was still looking at the digivice. –Hey, are you listening to me…? -A mischievous smile outlined on the three-horned digimon’s face; the kind of smile that only came out when she was about to tease Katherine a little. –Of course, you wouldn’t know how much any of this hard work tired me because doing stuff that way isn’t your style, or is it…? –Here it went. -…Cheater-sis…? –Oh, she said it. Katherine immediately turned at her digimon partner with an angered expression.
-How did you call me!? –Oh, was Jazz going to get one of Katherine’s smacks after that!. -You’re gonna’ have to catch me to find out! –The bunny said winking an eye and putting her tongue out, mocking the girl. What’s best for fully waking up than a little race? Jazz started running with her arms and ears fully extended, laughing loudly. Teasing her partner always got the bunny’s laugh box running. Meanwhile, Katherine just chased her through the palm trees, until the bunny’s laugh was interrupted. Jazz then pointed to her right, Katherine stopping too and turning to follow the pointing finger.
-There’s someone sleeping there. –Jazz stated, on a very plain tone. Just silently laying against a tree, a beautiful blonde girl was taking a nap. Only listening to her voice, stating that she was not robbing material was enough for Katherine to recognize this was the girl who had pushed Katherine to follow her dream, the one who helped her giving her first steps in this new adventure, the girl who was present when her life changed forever: Talia Brandt.
Trying to hide her excitement about this wasn’t something Katherine was able to do, nor was she interested in trying, she quickly walked towards the girl with a smile. –I can’t believe you’re here! -Kath… who’s this? –Jazz was hiding behind the girl’s leg, standing on her toes to pull from her dress to call her attention. -It’s so good to see you! How have you been? It’s been a while! –The girl then shook her head. –Well… not really! It’s been a while inside the Digital World but I now have learned the time goes faster here so it’s not been that much inside the human world but it still feels like a while to me cause… -Oh, oh. What happened when Katherine Jasso got excited? Yes, incessant rambling was back. -Hey, Kath… who’s this girl? –The bunny kept asking, while her tamer kept rambling.
-… seeing you here reminds me of home but also brings back memories cause I’ve grown since we last met, of course, I’m not as good as this as you are because you are… so… -The girl stopped her rambling just a little too late, she was already saying something embarrassing. -… cool. –Katherine face turned red and she gave a couple of steps back. –I’m sorry! I just got excited! –She said waving her hands in front of her quickly. Talia then noticed Jazz. -Oh! Yes! That’s right! She looks a lot like Tohru, right? –The girl had noticed the resemblance since she saw Jazz at Rustport. –This is Jazz! My digimon partner and my best friend. -Hi there. –Jazz plainly said, raising her hand briefly. -Jazz, this is Talia. –Katherine had talked so much about Talia in front of Jazz that the name was enough for the bunny to already understand everything that had just happened. Jazz knew how much of a fan of Talia the brunette was. –She is… -She is the girl you see as a role model even though you just met her for a couple of hours. –The bunny interrupted Katherine’s explanation, still with a plain expression on her face. Silence reigned between the three, Katherine’s face turning red.
-Waaaaahh! –The girl squealed, still blushing and moving her hands dismissively. –Don’t listen to her she’s just…! –The yelling from a pair of digimon approaching the scene caught the girl’s attention, they were addressing Talia, showing her some sort of flyer. -Tohru! Simba! –Katherine turned at the twin digimon. –I’m so glad to see you here! How have you been? –The brunette then turned to Jazz. –Jazz, these two are Simba and Tohru, they’re… -The girl interrupted herself, seeing Jazz had a dumbfounded look staring at the other Lopmon.
-OH MY GOD SHE’S LIKE ME BUT IN DRAGON MODE!! –Jazz yelled excited, still with an amazed expression. –How did you reach that evolution!? –The bunny got closer to Tohru, moving around her, admiring every detail. -OH GOD IS SO COOL! I WANT TO BE A DRAGON TOO. –Well, the ice was broken.

“It’s good to see you kiddo!” Surprisingly, in a very not-Talia like way, the blonde pulled the younger girl in for a quick hug, giving her a gentle pat on the shoulder. “I’ll admit, when you said you were going to the digital world all by yourself I was a little concerned you were going to get in trouble.” In fact the blonde had almost expected she would never see the younger girl again after that, but she’d save the morbid talk for later. “But look at you now! You found your partner and I’m sure you guys have had plenty of adventures.” In fact she could sense that Katherine was coming out of her shell a little, which was odd since she’d since she hardly seemed to come off as shy - skittish and meek maybe yes? But definitely not shy.
“Well, I’ve been kind of trying to balance my time in the digital world and the human world - even if the digital world is fun my work must continue, ya know? How about you? What kind of trouble have you been getting into here?,” she asked, teasing Katherine a little. But now thanks to the digital world, Bad Request was able to expand its business to a whole other plane! She winked at the female somewhat cryptically. “You could definitely say these days I work out of the office a lot more than I used to!”
C-cool? She blushed - Talia had never been very good at taking compliments or getting attention and frankly wasn’t sure how to react except for brushing it off as bluffing, making a thinking face. “Well, I make good breakfast sandwiches and can remove a virus off your computer if I get 10 minutes, but cool is kind of a stretch.” The words breakfast and sandwich made the twins perk up as their bellies rumbled, being reminded unfortunately that there would be no food unless Tohru entered this contest.
“There’s going to be a tournament called the King of Fist, and the prize involves food, you have to let me enter, please please?!” Talia wasn’t sure whether to laugh out loud or be concerned at the image of her small delicate bunny trying to avoid the kicks and punches of digimon twice her size and muscle mass. “I don’t mean to sound like a dorky mom here Tohru, but I’m kind of wary over this -you know, you’ve played enough fighter games!” An experience that would greatly benefit the bunny down the line. “Which is why I’ll be good at this, trust me!” With a deep sigh, Talia knew Tohru too well by now to know she more than likely wouldn’t take no for an answer. “Feh, I guess...Simba are you in?” The dragon trembled a bit, shaking his head with a no before jumping on the girl’s head. “Nah, I’m a cuddler, not a fighter! I’ll be moral support for you though, sis.”
Talia turned to Katherine and Jazz. “Thoughts? Would you be interested too, Jazz?” Tohru shrunk back at the attention from the fellow lopmon, the hyper energy undoubtedly ruffling the rigid feathers of the hare like one of those super awkward adults who didn’t know how to act smooth around kids. “I-its not an evolution, Simba is my brother and I inherited some of his genetics since we were born from the same egg. Think of me as a mixed breed lopmon, see?” The rabbit opened her mouth with a finger to show Jazz her sharp canine teeth. “These are meant for meat eating! I still like my vegetables though.”

Being raised in a home of parents who rarely showed their affection with words or physical demonstrations, Katherine was not at all used to hugs. Even though she usually felt like giving them, she rarely did. Except for maybe to Jazz (who she could hug with no trouble whenever she felt like) and Miyu (who was definitely a professional at hugging) the last person she had actually hugged was… Talia, before leaving the Human World. Now her friend had decided to give the hug back when the teenager least expected it, and she couldn’t be more paralyzed. Katherine couldn’t explain why, but this hug was different. She couldn’t actually see it, but she felt like her face was as red as it had gotten ever before, her whole body started shaking and she even felt like it was getting warmer. Even though the blonde girl had already let go of the quick hug, the brunette remained still, her eyes wide open, her face completely red and her heart beating like crazy.
The conversation went on, Katherine trying to calm herself down as Talia spoke, but at the same time attempting to look as relaxed as possible. Having her mind still lost around that hug, the girl had trouble paying attention to her friend. She could only think about how could she hug her like that? She kind of did the same thing before, though, but this was different! She wasn’t prepared to receive that kind of affection from someone she admired and cared for that much. Shen then tried to get back at the subject at hand, in order to be able to give some sort of reply to her friend. –W-well, yeah! We stopped some bandits on board of a train, and fought in a snowy town against some evil rock digimon! –While she spoke, Katherine somewhat recreated with her gestures her adventures, even though she wasn’t doing a very good job, and it looked like a kid's blathering. –I’ve got so much stuff to tell you! –Things were different now, even though she would always see Talia as a master, they were kind of at the same level now, it wasn’t like before when Talia knew a lot more stuff than Katherine did about digimons. The girl then blinked, to throw a question at her friend. -How long have you been inside this world? When did you decide to come? –She clearly remembered how Talia mentioned she hadn’t been in the Digital World when they met, so at some point, she had decided to venture herself in.
Then, as if Katherine hadn’t had enough trouble shaking that hug off her head, a wink that she could only define as ‘extremely cute’ came from Talia, making her blush right away. She would have spent much more time lost in that simple gesture, but the twins showing the blonde girl a flyer caught her attention. Tohru and Simba seemed pretty excited about this, so much that they had apparently missed Katherine’s presence and her greetings, which made the girl giggled at the sighting; they hadn’t changed a little, still two extremely adorable over-excited children.
Speaking of children, Jazz wasn’t acting much different from one little kid meeting some sort of superhero. The bunny was completely fascinated at Tohru, Talia’s Lopmon partner with draconic characteristics. –That’s amazing! I wonder what kind of evolutions you could reach! –Jazz’s eyes glimmered by only imagine this, as she kept talking to Talia’s bunny of how awesome that was and making a bunch of probably not very useful questions like if she went ‘Rawr’ like a dragon when she got mad. This blathering was interrupted when Talia addressed the not-draconic bunny. –Uh? –Jazz tilted her head, blinking. –Well… that sounds fun! Can we enter that? –She then turned at Katherine. The curly haired girl wasn’t surprised at all by this interest of her partner to this tournament since she was usually a very competitive creature. –Well, you know I’m not a fan of fighting… -Katherine started a brief explanation of why she wouldn't usually allow it, even though at the end she probably would since the bunny seemed excited. Nevertheless, before the brunette could continue, as if she had it prepared, the hare quickly interrupted Katherine. –Hmm, you’re right. –She sighed, to then continue in a dramatic tone. –That’s so sad, cause if we’re not entering this then I wouldn’t accept to go, since I would feel so bad just watching them fight and you not letting me… -Jazz placed a hand on her forehead, dramatically. -And if we don’t go then you wouldn’t be able to spend more time with Talia, would you? -Damn it, she had her right where she wanted. Even though her partner was using some cheap psychology on her, Katherine was not missing a chance to spend more time with her blonde friend; she had just found her, for god's sake! She wasn’t going to let her go that easily.
-Okay, it’s decided! Jazz is entering the tournament. –The brunette stated firmly. –Does it say when or where it’s taking place? -She turned back at Talia, looking at the flyer. -I won… -Jazz mumbled, a mischievous smile over her face. Much beyond the tactic pulled by the bunny and even though the duo had some money right now to invite Talia and the twins for food, Katherine and Jazz's 'undying curiosity' always had them up for an adventure, so they were going to take this chance anyway and see what this tournament could bring.

"Y-yeah! I haven't evolved though and neither has Simba come to think of it - not yet anyway, but I'm sure I will soon! I can turn into a dragon but it's just an armor form we found in the cave of a megidramon, how about you? Have you made it to champion yet, Jazz was it?" This was the first time in a while Tohru had met another Lopmon, so it was a bit...surreal? Did that sound too cheesy? "But I think...I was a lopmon who looked like you at one point." As a matter of fact yes, she remembered! "It's good we ran into one another or I probably wouldn't have been able to recall that at all, so thanks!"
“Bandits on a train? Sounds very Firefly, I like it!” Only someone as dorky and obscure as Talia would make a reference to the short lived Joss Whedon series about space pirates in a post apocalyptic galaxy - but hey it was a cult favorite for a reason! Not to mention Katherine reminded her a little of the spunky ship mechanic Kaylee. “Well, I’m all ears! And I love stories, memoirs are one of my favorite genres to read.” And while Talia didn’t mind being in the hot seat as far as having rapid fire questions thrown at her went, she did have to pause a bit in between each one to gather her thought before giving an answer - to be honest the programmer wasn’t really used to having attention concentrated on her so this was something she sort of had to adapt to. “Not as long as you would think but at the same time it feels like we’ve been here a while...our initial goal was to try and find out a little more about Tohrus and Simbas past but it’s been downgraded to just kind of disorganized exploring?”
Perhaps them having some kind of direction would help but considering neither of the twins could remember a thing and a half about their past a direction was pretty much impossible to come by - instead, the gallant three played it by ear so to speak. “The definition of disorganized exploring here being sniffing around to see if anything rings a bell to these two - heh, as if their brains weren’t empty enough!” And of course Tohru didn’t take kindly to her human’s teasing, placing her tiny paws on her hips, glaring up at the human with her long ears flared out a bit. “Well we can’t all be anti-social know-it-alls, Talia.” Slowly but surely was the bunny picking up on the art of snark, a bit too much for her human’s liking, earning the bunny a condescending head pat. “Awww, you think you know more than me, you’re so cute.”
Simba could only shake his head at the banter between his sister and his human, opting to stay out of it - girls were so weird with that stuff! Granted he knew it was from a place of jest on both sides, but still, they were just so...uncomfortably antagonistic sometimes? “Don’t worry, it’s just for fun Katherine! None of us are here to learn how to be the next Jackie Chan - not to mention Jazz would have you to cheer her on and myself and Simba of course - it’s all about good sportsmanship - granted I don’t like sports but I used to referee robotics tournaments in college and it’s pretty much the same thing - just replace the big buff dudes with scrawny dudes, so what you say?”
“Wonderful!” Talia was thrilled when Katherine agreed to let her partner in on the fun, so much so that the blonde placed an affectionate arm around the youngers for a second. “And now we can be buddies cheering on our partners! Don’t feel bad, I was kinda hesitant to say yes to this too but us doing it together with the digimon makes me feel a little bit less worried, you know?” Feeling a tug on her leg, Talia looked down to see the bunny getting her attention once. “Worrywart McGee, lets go sign me up before all the spots get taken!”

The reencounter inside the small jungle seemed to have been pretty fun so far, seeing Simba and Tohru, the two first (nice) digimon Katherine met, interacting with Jazz, her own digimon, was sort of a dream come true, this, without mentioning the excitement of a new adventure next to who she considered her first mentor in this adventure. –Well, as a matter of fact, I am able to evolve into Champion level. –The not-dragon-like bunny crossed her arms with a boasting expression, seemingly proud of her strength. Was she the bragging type? Well, yes, but she probably was exacerbating this quality because she was trying to impress Tohru.
-I don’t know if you can boast about that Champion form right now when you can’t even control Cho-Hakkaimon. –And… Katherine was right, the only time Jazz had managed to reach Champion level, she had destroyed everything around her, having almost no self-control of herself and her thirst for combat. –W-Well… -The bunny sweatdropped, to sigh right after. –I also have an armor form, but not further than that. –That was better. There was no way of denying pig-girl was extremely powerful, but, unlike Moosemon, it was a power Jazz was not able to control just yet, and maybe this tournament could help her do just that.
–Tohru and Simba work as a great team, I’m sure they are very strong in their evolved forms. They saved me back at the rooftop of Overlord Enterprises, and I can’t thank them enough for that –Bowing to the pair, a warm smile made its way to the girl’s face. Funnily enough, the three tamers she had met inside this world were somehow pursuing any kind of lead to know more about their digimon partner’s past, and that couldn’t be a coincidence. –I suppose when your digimon know there’s something about their previous life that they should be remembering, the natural thing to do for a tamer is helping them get those memories back, right? –And even when Talia’s endeavor seemed sort of disorganized, that was fine, really. After all, it probably wasn’t a good idea to overly plan a route through this marvelous world. Katherine and Jazz were also the types of exploring the world and having fun while they moved towards a goal, even though theirs was pretty different, and didn’t involve getting any kind of memories back… so far, at least.
Having met Talia here and thinking about everything she had accomplished so far, made Katherine realize how much she and Jazz had grown. Talia was still a mentor for her, but this time she still had something to give, this time they could live an adventure together, as a team, instead of the blonde girl and her twins protecting her from some flying guinea pigs. This, even though she was not showing it due to shyness, excited her more than she could put into words. Even though she really didn't understand the TV reference Talia had thrown at her. –I definitely will tell you all about those stories later! –Nodding with determination, she then went to listen to Talia talk about her time at college, and how she compared this to the tournament. –You were a referee for robot battles? –Tilting her head, a mixture of confusion and curiosity could be seen in Katherine’s gaze.
They then listened to Tohru remind them they had to go sign themselves up; welp, that was true, so enough chatting and more going to wherever that event was taking place. -Does the flyer say where is the tournament taking place? –She really hoped it did, or they were going to have some trouble participating in a bout they couldn’t even find. –In that case, we should head there immediately. I hope it’s not too far from here. –Katherine definitely didn’t mind changing her course too much, since they didn’t have much of a rush to getting to Terminus anyways, but as soon as they got there, the better, maybe it was back in Whitewater? She thought they had left that for good, but maybe there was still some adventure more waiting for her there.
Once the duo started walking towards the signing up place, she tackled Talia’s remarks, feeling the blonde’s arm around hers and smiling to the blue-eyed warmly. It was funny how Talia made Katherine feel, she somewhat felt like… a piece of home was there with her. –I’m so glad! It’s nice I get to make you feel less worried for a change, since I feel I just brought you trouble the first time we met. –A short giggle ensued, Katherine then remembering a couple of things she needed to talk to her about. –Oh, by the way! Did you send that letter to my mom saying I was going on an internship overseas? –That was something she had been wondering about since she arrived, even though that worry had been somewhat soothed by a relatively recent discovery. –I found out that the time inside the Digital World goes faster than in the Human World! So I think it hasn’t been that long since I left Shibuya, so probably my mom is not too worried, luckily! Even though this is something probably you knew about now that you’re here. –An index finger placed in her lower lip, the raven-haired reflected about this. –I wonder if there’s something I can teach you about now. It would be a nice way to give back a little something for everything you taught me before… -As they talked, the group kept walking towards wherever this tournament was taking place.
Meanwhile, Jazz searched for a way to break the ice with the twins; they seemed like a cool pair, but she wasn't good at speaking with digimon, even though she was one herself; She usually felt comfier talking to humans instead. The bunny was trying, though! Maybe she needed some help?
