"Shoutmon…" Alan repeated the name to himself a few times, turning it over in his mouth.
"It's a cool name," he decided, "cooler than..."
He thought about his miniscule knowledge of Japanese once more.
"...Cooler than 'Sho,' anyway."
With this, Alan approached Shoutmon's new captive, sitting down at a safe distance to get a better look. The "Digimon" who had held him hostage a moment ago now appeared to be on the verge of tears.
Veemon struggled to get the words out: "Why... weren't... you... afraid?"
It was a good question. Where did the feeling that he wasn't in danger come from? Why hadn't he been afraid? Sure, he had been convinced he was dreaming, but that couldn't have been the only reason. At that point, Alan remembered something that might have had something to do with it.
"I... have had a dream once, a real dream, where I was at gunpoint. In a mall. This faceless, nameless gunman... he fired. He shot me in the chest, but... I didn't feel anything. I stood up and went on my way. Perhaps I subconsciously remembered the feeling of being invincible. I really didn't know you weren't going to do anything."
It was something, but it didn't explain why he was so sure of himself, even after realizing he was awake. Was it something about the Digimon's behavior?
"You... just wanted to get them to stop chasing you, right?" asked Alan. The Digimon nodded. "Were they trying to hurt you?"
This was the correct question.
"They... they weren't," Veemon conceded, "they were trying to make me go back home."
"I see," said Alan, as he stood up and turned back towards Adrian. Nevertheless, the Digimon continued speaking.
"I was so close! I had stumbled upon something new!" Alan's eyes widened, and he stopped in his tracks.
"An entire world stood in front of me, and all I had to do-"
"-was reach out and grab hold of it!"
Alan was now shaking feverishly, and breathing hard. He was still facing Adrian. "If I had just let everything slide, would I ever have been given a second chance?" Alan turned towards the restrained dragon, expectantly.
"For as long as I'd live, I'd never be able to forgive myself..."
Alan crouched down in front of the Digimon again, and asked for his name.
"I'm Levi. Anyone who doesn't know that calls me Veemon." responded Levi, with a smile.
"I'm Alan. Alan Pantell."
