A Necessary Lesson [Syre/Cas]

Oh, that was a paper-thin excuse - one that would blow right away in the wind if pressed. Still, checking on the General was definitely among the most important thing that they needed to do at the moment, so Emma and Syre let that slide without comment.
"No worries here... Vigilant, make sure I'm up for lunch, at least."
"Understood, mi'lady." With a small bow given, the two would once more head out into the hall - Syre giving a small blink as they cleared the range of their earshot. "She's a spirit wielder, right? Why's the Knightmon so... well, loyal?" It wasn't hard for the cat to see - Vigilant definitely cared far more for Emma than he did for anyone else there. Still, that was more a side question.
"And those 'red cards'... well, hopefully they work as well as she's making them out to be. Though she seemed careful to say that it wasn't going to cure anything." Syre more muttered that last part to herself, unsure of how hopeful Cassandra might have been to their usefulness. And honestly, the cat didn't know enough about them - or their research - to say anything solid.
For the moment, Denryu was the concern. A knock at the door was granted with an answer: "Yes? Come on in." Opening the door, Cassandra would see, well, an ideal sight.
Denryu sat at the edge of the bed, and Phantom floated at his right, a light healing aura radiating over that bandaged-and-braced hand. He didn't seem worse for wear, at least, even nodding to the running timer on the nightstand.
"Wondered when you'd roll around..." He gave a sigh, nodding at the doctor's presence. "Doing well enough. I think the antibiotics threw me off more than the hand, itself."

"While I do not know Emma and Vigilants exact story I've had a theory for some time about Digimon and human partnerships. I found in the early days of my research in the digital world that digivices acted as a filter or converted of sorts. When partnered digimon evolve the Digimon themselves provides the physical base while the Tamer provides the power to facilitate the evolution. During this exchange a small amount of data exchange happens between the Tamer and Digimon. Not enough to really even qualify as a data bleed given how minute it is, but this exchange fortifies the Tamer to the digital world and stabilizes the Digimon's data so they can better handle the flux of evolution. That is why partnered Digimon tend to be stronger and Digimon partnered humans tend to be healthier. The same theory applies to spirit user and Xros generals to some extent." Cassandra explained laying out the basis for her theory.
"However the Digivice is just a tool to help facilitate this, a physical representation of the pact or bond made between a human and a digimon or spirit. It is my belief that even without a digivice a deeply bonded pair could still facilitate evolution. More so I believe humans, even those already bonded to a spirit or digimon, can have more then a single bond. With the strongest of which being represented by a digivice. With the bonding near equally with multiple digimon being the basis of an Xros General's army. I believe even though Emma is a Spirit user she has a solid bond with Vigilant even if no digivice is involved." The Doctor intoned even as she pushed open the door the tension in her shoulders relaxing minutely at the sight of the General whole and resting well enough. His complaints in regards to the antibiotics earning a small quirk of a smile from Cas.
"The antibiotics are sadly the worst part of the healing process, but you'll need them for a few days yet. Just avoid any dairy and stick to gentle foods." Cas advised her eyes softening.
"Once you are done with Phantom though I'll need to borrow our resident ghost.Emma has had a break through with the statues data, but we need to run some tests to ensure it's safety." The Doctor explained nodding towards the Bakemon though making no move to interrupt or distract him from his careful work.

"Interesting theory..." Syre pondered it for a moment, trying to piece it together in her head. So humans and Digimon held a sort of special bond - and to an extent, it was independent of the Digivice? "I mean, that might explain why they stay close, yes. I guess its just something as simple as them being friends or something in the end, though... hm."
Honestly, she was impressed at Cassandra's ability to ponder this far, even if Syre had only a fair bit of understanding to it herself. Perhaps she was already starting to pick a lot out of dad's book? In any case, it didn't take them long to reach the room - and find that the General was, more-or-less, doing fairly well for his condition.
"Hm. Fair enough... though at this point I think I'm done just trying to hang around this room. If I'm 'out of commission', I still have to find work that my partners can handle on their own - oh?" Emma's work had gone that well? The General gave a nod - and just then, the timer at the edge of the room rang, the ghost pulling away from Denryu's hand.
"Then she needs me for another one of her experiments?" The Phantom's voice rolled out in a haunting wave, enough to make the cat give a light shiver.
"Hm. What did she come up with?"

"Actually this would be one of my experiments Phantom. I'm safety testing her cards before we even think about applying them to live combat. However I need to do a dry run with one of them to see how much strain they might put on a Digimon's core. Then we'll work from there." Cassandra explained fishing on of the red cards out of her pocket to show the Bakemon and Xros General before passing the card over to Denryu himself.
"Theoretically this will allow us to safely fight the D-reaper without risk of infection. Emma believes a Digimon should be able to handle running the code embedded in the card for around fifteen minutes before it becomes too much, but it would be best to learn whether that is a soft or hard estimate here in a lab with a Doctor on hand if something goes wrong." Cas added giving the man a chance to look the card over to his hearts content as she pondered on work the team could bring in without the General's aid.
"There's the Rosewood construction. I hear they need Digimon to escort some of the younger mons through the Timberlands in addition to looking for guards to escort supply trains. With Demon and yourself benched the rest of the team would blend in well with the various workers and other Digimon flocking there for work. It would be easy for them to get lost as just another face in the crowd in the chaos that is a new town forming." The Doctor suggested even as she glanced down doing a quick check of the man's hand now that Phantom was done. While it was still an ugly purple the red around the stitches had begun to fade. Taking the card back once Denryu was done inspecting it the Doctor would glance the General over pursing her lips silently in thought.
"If you wear your brace and are careful in disguising yourself you could accompany them, but you would need to make sure to not use your right hand. Emma is sleeping off her work, but the last thing I need is for both you and Demon going stir crazy. I was planning to put his wings to use later anyway helping me gather some material so he doesn't try to chew on the drywall or something in frustration." Cassandra mused not entirely putting it past the Devidramon not to put teeth on something if he was kept cooped up for too much longer.
"Besides if they take Dagger with them in Champion form he can give Angel a nasty power boost should the group tangle with anything sizable out there. Though I doubt you'll run into more then maybe a pissed off champion that close to the Village of Beginnings." She added thoughtfully. The golden Digimon's presence would also serve to break up the groups image further making them unlikely to be singled out in suspicion.

One of Cassandra's experiments, for one of Emma's machinations? Honestly, it was no difference to the Bakemon itself, Phantom's briefly looking over that card with his shaded eyes, before Denryu would turn it once over in his hand. Its appearance was simply that of a red 'Matrix Card', the blue version of which Denryu and Emma had little use for.
But if it worked how Emma intended? "Once we affirm its safety, we'll simply have to leak its production capability to a few reputable sources. Numerous as we're becoming, we're not enough to handle a worldwide epidemic on our own... and given our reputation, well, no-one will accept it if it comes from us." He gave a sigh, offering the card back towards Cassandra. "Phantom, go ahead with her on that test. You know how to filter out that data if need be."
"Of course, General." But it seemed that wasn't the end of the conversation... Rosewood, of all things? Honestly, such 'charity work' would have ordinarily been beneath them, or too risky to consider, but considering the upkeep of this base? "... I can't send the whole group, as there's risk by association. But... hm." Right: grabbing a receiver from the drawer in his nightstand, he gave a buzz:
"Angel. Take Raider and Dagger through the basement portal, towards Rosewood. Yes... yes, that escort work. Use whatever names you deem fit - stay Xros'd in 'Gauntlet mode'. Yes... yes. Cassandra will affirm the order to Dagger. See you in a few hours."
With a click, he'd stand up, stretching out his back. "I'm going to hit the office, at least, and see how the mission guild's reacting to our desert expedition." Honestly, he couldn't stand another five minutes in that bed.

Nodding at the confirmation for Rosewood Cas pressed a button on her own D-terminal. "Right Dagger, yes I know you've heard from Angel already, just confirming what she said. Keep a low profile and stay in champion. You're less recognizable that way and use codenames. Be safe." Cas confirmed answering her own Digimon's inquiries before she closed down the comm.
"Try not to wear yourself out Denryu. On the brightside most of the individuals that got inside the fortress haven't been inclined to talk to Luminas so this shouldn't with luck link directly back to us. Just remember to check in in a couple of hours and I'll get you your next dose of painkiller and antibiotics." The Doctor added for once cautiously hopeful. The only good thing that Dragon had done was more or less destroy any evidence there might have been of their presence and black out the skies making it harder still for Luminas to ID them.
"Phantom if you'll meet us down in the lab. I'd rather do this in a controlled setting." Cas requested leaving the General to his business as she motioned for the Bakemon to join Syre and her.

"Hopefully... though just because it hasn't come out, doesn't necessarily mean that Luminas hasn't managed to contact at least some of them." Naturally, the General remained cautiously pessimistic. How else would he have survived this long? Regardless, he gave a nod towards Cassandra's individual concerns towards him - and as he made his way out of the room, he gave the doctor a brief hand on her shoulder as he passed by.
This left Syre, Cassandra, and Phantom left in the room, the specter giving a nod as he followed behind both the doctor and the cat... which earned a slight feeling of tension from Syre herself. She knew the ghost was back there, of course, but the sheer feeling of the undead type, watching over the two of them with that ghastly gaze, was enough to put her senses on edge.
She didn't bring it up with words, of course. Crossing her arms, as if she was slightly cold, the cat tried to distract herself. "Its just a bit sad, isn't it? I mean, to make something as incredible as that card, but not being able to take ownership over creating it..."
Syre gave a sigh, shaking her head. "Then again, something like that might just be used as leverage, if controlled... hmph." It wouldn't take them long to finally descend to the laboratory - a sterile and plain room, compared to the rest of the manor. Giving a nod towards Cassandra, Syre stepped off to the side to observe, as the Bakemon floated towards the center.
"... So what should I be paying attention for, in particular?"

"True, but that's why you wore a mask and I did my best to stay out of sight and avoid using names. We can only hope and plan at this point." Cas murmured lifting a hand to briefly cover the General's with her own before she let him pass her by. A small gesture, but it spoke the world. Then collecting her charges the Doctor turned and made her way down the hall. Seemingly unaffected by the Bakemon's presence unlike Syre.
"Truthfully knowing your work will never see the light of day only the finished project is perhaps one of the hardest parts of this. I think only your Father truly understands the leaps and bounds we've made in combating the D-reaper and how far forward we've single handedly pushed the boundaries of medical science, but I'm afraid I'll never live to see my name in the history books." Cassandra explained with a sigh as they trio made their way down towards the lab.
"Though perhaps when I am long dead and gone those I'll entrust my work too will ensure I am at least a footnote in a medical journal somewhere. Should I pass my work will go to your Father and if something happens to him well...You will be the one to inherent my journals. In the end though Syre never forget we're not heroes. The people who call themselves such end up in an early grave. We're just people trying to do the best we can for the world we live in." Cas added reached out to gently ruffle the little cat's ears.
"That a way we leave things better for the next generation. You're our legacy." The Doctor murmured offering Syre a smile. A true smile this time as her eyes softened lips curving with gentle warmth that seemed almost foreign on the woman's hard face, but suited it fine indeed.
Below in the lab Cas motioned for Phantom to carefully position himself near the middle of the room so if something went wrong he wouldn't damage any of the more critical equipment. "For the moment I want you to concentrate on how much strain this puts on you. It should theoretically feel a bit like trying to hold a powerful digivolution. When the strain starts to feel like too much let me know and let the code go understand?" Cas explained carefully prepping a timer on her D-terminal.
"Right stand by for scanning." The Doctor quipped as she slid the card and focused on Phantom as she clicked the timer to run.

"Avoid using names... tch."
That bit of annoyance, though pointed, wouldn't have been lost on Cassandra. It was in panic, and a moment of exclamation - but Denryu couldn't take back that mistake of yelling Emma's name out for the rest to hear. He put his own sister at risk because of that, and the weight simply hung deep over his shoulders. Still, he managed to remain composed, even folding his fingers around Cassandra's own, before he stepped off.
As for Syre's little frustrated rant, well, it wasn't lost on Cassandra. It wasn't just Emma's work, but everything that this team had done, that was relegated to the shadows. That their names wouldn't be known, despite their accomplishment and work, was a hard pill to swallow. At first, Cassandra's tone made it a bit worse for the cat: the doctor's death? Dad's death? She grit her teeth, trying to shake that out of her head.
It was only the doctor's last words that managed to get through to her at all: You're our legacy. At that, the cat's eyes opened somewhat, looking over her shoulder at the doctor's smile... Syre giving her own as she looked on forward. "Well, if you can give us a world without the D-Reaper, we'll be thankful enough, I guess."
Tall order, but no less true! With the card swiped, there was an immediate notable reaction: a bright burst of red light surrounding the phantom's body. It had receded a moment later - nothing visible outward, the Bakemon curiously looking over his cloaked frame.
"Normal so far... on the physical end. Core rotation increased by about a hundred percent... decaying slowly to about 160%, total..." Syre blinked - the Bakemon could track this with such accuracy? The ghost, giving a slight sway to the left and right, gave a nod. He was already starting to understand how this worked:
"It empowers the core to create 'space', then integrates the 'statue line' within the target's frame. So long as the core remains empowered, it can keep that line - but as it slows, the code will become too much to maintain. The core slowly slows its spin... and once the threshold is passed, a severe dip in power will be felt when the code 'ejects'. Most likely, a forced degradation to rookie..."

"Hmm well it has quite the flashy activation." Cas murmured opening up a file on her D-terminal and taking care to CC Emma on it to ensure she could look over the notes at her leisure. "Still we know now that it's compatible with the Team Player modification for the D-tector so those who lack a card reader can still have it utilized on them so long as I carry additional cards." The Doctor noted jotting down Phantom's assessment so far of the card.
"Is you core rotating clockwise like normal and any other difference beyond increased rotation to create space for the code in your frame?" Cas questioned notepad open before she thought better of it and opened the file on a small tablet before passing it to Syre.
"Here Syre if you would take notes I want to do an in-depth scan of Phantom here while this thing is active." She explained pulling out her advanced scanner as she primed and leveled it on the digimon taking a reading as she did so.

"Meaning anyone can be made able to fight against the D-Reaper if they allow the code to take hold..." Interesting. Obviously, it was hard to tell exactly what was going on beneath the Bakemon's frame, but the banter between the two painted the picture well enough!
"The rotation direction remains the same. No skew added - its more like the power added from a Digivolution, which should be expected from the matrix card. There is the feeling of a faint buzz, but I cannot tell if that is an error or the natural effect that the card should have..." The ghost pondered it for a moment, Syre taking the tablet in-hand.
"On it!" And so, she would transcribe the doctor and the ghost's words so far, just as that scanner started to scan the ghoul's frame. The scanner returned the normal information: 'Bakemon', 'Xros Rookie', 'Virus', 'Knightmare Soldier'. In fact, the scanner only returned one unfamiliar line:
Anomaly in LinCX!@#%@^^@$^%$$%^$&$W^%
That one line stretched off the screen, a garbled mess of symbols, letters, and numbers - settled right in the correct place for card identification. Even that was likely the expected result of using a forcefully modified card!
"It does feel somewhat strange to be at this elevated pace - likely irritability in Digimon who remain idle for too long after use..."

"I imagine it is a bit like taking a shot of adrenaline or caffeine. Digimon typically evolve to higher forms to combat immediate threats which involves expelling energy so with no threat to combat you feel...antsy. Yes I think antsy is the closest word to describe the feeling even if it might not be the proper medical term." The Doctor mused eyeing her scanner with interest as she lightly clicked her tongue in thought before putting it away.
"Well you aren't registering any different on the scanner other then an error with the card in use code slot so it hasn't altered you frame in such a noticeable manner as to be detected in that manner. Hmm..." Cas spoke trailing off as she stared at the Bakemon for a long moment before grabbing a blank piece of paper and some tape from one of the desks and heading towards one of the blank far walls she carefully taped the makeshift target to the heavy concrete.
"Right take stock of your core speed level at this moment and then if you could use a minor attack on the provided target. I want to see if it effects your abilities and if utilizing them slows down your core spin noticeably." The Doctor explained before stepping back and away.

"Antsy... antsy, yes." The Bakemon gave a nod, agreeing with Cassandra's assessment, as Syre continued to write notes off to the side. Thankfully, it didn't appear that the Bakemon was suffering any ill effect - would this really be a steady enough answer?
Hard to say: Cassandra still had a few things to test. With the target set up, the Bakemon gave a nod, looking square in its direction. "I hope you don't mind that my main means of attack is far from that accurate... Syre, behind me." The cat's ear perked up, the cat swiftly moving out of the way as the Bakemon prepared its surge. A ghastly green aura surrounded the phantom, and with a surge forward, the aura hit the target. The 'Phantasamal Burst' singed the wall, and left that paper, turned a sickly green, float down to the floor in a charred mess.
The scanner itself would document the results:
Core Spin: 188 CW... 188 CW... 172 CW... 186 CW...
There was a dip during the attack - but nothing that brought it away from its slow rate of decay! "Felt pretty normal to me. Same amount of 'oomph' and everything!"

"Excellent. It looks like other then a brief dip everything is functioning as normal though Syre if you could add a cautionary note that given the dip extremely high powered or stressful attacks might cause complications. The core rotation seemed to recover speed just fine so we'll keep it as something to look out for just in case." The Doctor noted satisfied with the little test.
"Now we're not going to try any infection just yet, but I am going to grab a vialed sample of D-virus and walk it towards you. I want to see how it reacts the closer I get as that will be a good indication for future testings outside of this dry run." Cas explained moving towards the cooler as she pulled out a slightly frost coated vial with glowing crimson liquid inside.
"Now Syre stay back in case the vial breaks. I have an EV suit on and theoretically even if it ate through that and my shield my infection would overcome it, but I don't want to risk you getting caught in the splash zone. You're young and your data is in more flux then the likes of Phantoms which could make any damage further infection could do worse given your age." The Doctor warned readying the vial in her outstretched hand.
"All right we are at thirty-feet and showing no reaction. Closing into twenty-five feet." Cas called out moving forward and then pausing to check the virus's reaction, scanning it, before she would close in another five feet and repeat a visual and scanned check before doing so again.

"Aye... the issue would be is if an attack would dip us below the threshold to hold the code, I feel." Syre gave a nod, adding her own hypothesis. "Of course, this is assuming that the line would immediately eject, rather than it being a gradual process..."
The note taken, it was time for the next step: practical application. Cassandra drew a vial, that familiar red substance brought towards the ghost. Nodding, Syre took a step back, as Cassandra slowly approached the ghoul. Though she held the vial itself, the doctor might notice something different in her own gaze. Inflicted by the D-Reaper, she naturally had an 'inkling' as to the various types of Digital life around her - either curiosity, or an outright drive to destroy or infect, however muted - but this felt different. It would feel as if the Bakemon was entirely invisible to her 'other' sight.
Even when the D-Virus should have been attacking the glass, and jumping towards the ghoul, the mass didn't react. Thirty feet out, it had been drawn towards Syre - but even five feet away, it simply settled at the bottom of the glass.
"Its that potent?"
