... Well, thankfully, the Gulfmon's question didn't warrant an answer, not with the explosion following only a few seconds afterwards! As the Wizardmon had pointed towards Lillymon, Gulfmon was thankfully heading off in the right direction for evacuation. Perhaps he'd be able to get his ears to settle in the meantime.
Just a short distance behind, the Wizardmon gave a short nod towards Toki. "I intended to go back and find as many as I could, regardless." As Toki sent those ashes up to act as a small net, he would give a thumbs-up towards the Lagosmon, before raising his staff, as a measure to conjure a barrier.
The Wizardmon would fall out of sight fairly quickly, as Toki made his way through the woods. He'd catch up, to see the Sunflowmon each carrying a number of Mushroommon in their arms, the Lillymon leading the group on through. "Damn it... keep together! We'll break through to the edge of the forest!" In this chaos, the woods would be trembling a bit, 'wildlife' flying upwards or simply making their own tear out of the forest, perhaps just a few dozen feet to their right or left. As they would sprint through that last stretch?
"Oh thank god..."
They would actually clear the outside of the forest! A quick glance forward would reveal an interesting sight, several tents set up, with powerful-looking Digimon setting up a perimeter. At first glance, this might have seemed like a threatening display - but the perimeter itself was decorated with the colors of Terminus and Whitewater. The Lillymon dispelled her cannon - and, hopefully, the Gulfmon would catch on.
Or, at the very least, have decent enough hearing to realize this wasn't a threat. "Well, that might be why we didn't run into anyone else... alright, everyone, wind down, wind down. Anyone hurt?"
As the ultimate level tried to keep the group organized, one Digimon stepped out from the tents to meet them - a Lobomon (X), carefully waving one hand to meet the group. "Alright, guys, I know this has been a mess, but let me see your hands..."
Their hands? The Lillymon seemed a bit confused, but as she was about to raise her arms, the Lobomon corrected himself: "I mean, literally. Gloves off if you have them."
"Um..." Alright, like this? She showed her palms, then the back of her hands to the light-element Digimon. "Alright, you're good to go."
Weird, just a quick glance at her hands? That seemed like an oddly specific test...

Gulfmon was apparently already walking in the right direction and now he felt a pat on his leg. He looked and saw Toki directing him towards the others. At first he was annoyed by being ordered around by a human but then he realized that this meant Toki would stay behind where he belongs. He snapped his fingers and as he did the flames on the red cape formerly worn by MetalPhantomon wore off. With that out of the way Gulfmon nodded to Lillymon before catching up with the others
Over time they eventually met up with a threatening looking digimon, gulfmon was already ready to fight again and was in the middle of assuming fighting stance when he noticed the Lillymon was lowering her weapons so this thing was friendly? Oh well, he could use a break and maybe find out if he really is capable of fighting without hearing and only 3 feet. This digimon wanted to make a test and after listening in he shrugged.
"Well as you can see I'm not wearing pants, I'm not even sure how I should wear them. All four or just two?"
Oh right his hearing is still affected, never mind.

Toki breathed a sigh of relief when they made it through without any more hold ups. It seemed there truly was a relief effort going on out here. "Thank goodness..." he said as he approached the Lobomon alongside the rest of the group. There seemed to be some kind of test they had to do, as if making sure there was nothing off about anyone who was trying to pass through. Lillymon seemed to get through just fine, so he approached. He waved at Gulfmon to get his attention and gestured towards himself to get him to pay attention.
He turned to face the Lobomon, showing his palms. If all was well, he would show them the back of his hands. "It was a nightmare scenario out there. We had to fight through a MetalPhantomon to make it out past some kind of magical minefield. Then something tried setting fire to the forest and Wizardmon is still out there trying to contain it." he explained as he went through this procedure. He looked back at Gulfmon, then at Lobomon again "Something must have damaged his hearing out there, so if he seems a bit confused, that's probably why."
Toki still looked like he was in pain from the injuries he sustained, but his first concern wasn't about himself "Have any others made it here safely? Do we know anything more about the situation...?" he asked. He wouldn't really let himself relax until he knew things were progressing well. If we was allowed through, he would watch the other Digimon pass through if they were able to. With any luck they would all be safe now. All he had to do now was wait and remain there in case some other situation happened.

"Oh, just get going, sir." The Lobomon simply pointed a thumb over his shoulder, motioning that the Gulfmon was good to go. Really, he could see the back of his arms from a mile away - and the sooner that demon moved out of the way, the sooner he could get on with his duties.
Next was the Lagosmon. The wolf spirit gave a more proper inspection, which boiled down to a quick nod given to each side of his hands. "Alright, you're clean. Mushroommon, I'm going to need you to take off your gloves!" With the rookies starting to work on that, the Lobomon gave a nod towards Toki's explanation. "It does look like this group's seen the worst of it. Well, we'll be able to provide aid and help them along their way..." The wolf gave a 'tsk', though, seeing wisps of smoke spilling out overhead.
"We've had a decent flow of evacuees, especially when we first arrived, but I'd say you're the biggest group we've had leave at once. Unsurprising, of course - the less prepared would have simply scattered. As for what we know - hm?" Well, that was curious. Most of the Mushroommon had gone along with the Lobomon's request, but three, standing next to each-other, seemed hesitant to comply.
"For the love of... Daze!" Pointing a palm out to those three, the mere rookies would blink, quickly falling onto their back as a flash of light overtook them. Gritting his teeth, he'd walk right up, plucking one up by his left arm, ripping the glove off - to reveal a runic mark, written in Digital Script, on the back of his left hand. "This. There's 'marked' Digimon, under the control of someone inside the woods - a Wisemon." His answer was short, his attention focused as he raised a palm to that mark - a searing wave of light radiating out, both burning that hand, and rending the ink of the mark into trash data. The other two would have ran off, but the other Mushroomon around kept them held in place.
"Three of 'em, huh... one I could see, trying to slip through and scout outside. But why so many in one group?"

To few's surprise, Gulfmon did not appreciate what he perceived to be either patronizing or pity from a human. Although the response he came up with could only dig himself deeper.
"What, why would I ever wear earrings?" He said annoyed. Rather than taking time to inspect him or wasting time trying to communicate apparently, Gulfmon got clearance anyway. And since even Gulfmon could tell he was making an ass of himself the longer he stays at that checkpoint, he shrugged and moved along with zero protests. Hopefully someone somewhere in this place. Well if there were one thing to learn from the human world it was that places like this always have at least one medic tent and if his hearing was fine he'd have heard Lobomon telling him the exact same thing. But before any such medical treatment could be taken place there seems to be a problem with a band of Mushroommon. Gulfmon clenched his knuckles smiling with glee. He didn't need to hear the conversation to understand that these digimon wasn't invited.
"Is there a problem, sir?" You could tell from his cheerful voice that what he actually wanted was an excuse to beat up some unwelcome guests before giving them the boot.

Toki smiled a bit as he was allowed to pass, though the reason the check was even necessary soon made itself very clear, as some of the Mushroommon were stopped by Lobomon. He watched, shocked as Lobomon burned off this strange mark from their hands. Lobomon explained that it was the mark of control by a Digimon called Wisemon "Wait...what? So that's what MetalPhantomon was after when he called us potential 'recruits...'" he said.
He tried his best to think back on the events of the day to figure out anything that could be useful information going forward. "How could this have happened without us knowing...? Wait..." he looked up, then around at the other Digimon "I'd hate to say it, but I think Wizardmon set us up. Let me explain my reasoning. Wizardmon knew about the evacuation effort, but didn't check either me or Gulfmon when we came to offer our assistance. We could have been controlled, but he didn't check. When MetalPhantomon was defeated he started...laughing. I mean, it could have been the victory getting to him, but what if there was some kind of plan all along to sneak across marked Digimon in such a large group, and MetalPhantomon was just an unwitting pawn? Him staying behind to prevent the fire from spreading could have just been an excuse so he could slip away from this checkpoint...all to get a few controlled Digimon on the outside."
He sighed heavily after he mentioned all of this "I honestly hope I'm wrong, but if you ask me, then Wizardmon is either controlled, or a bigger part in all of this than we realize." this particularly hurt Toki considering he was beginning to trust Wizardmon. He saved his life from MetalPhantomon at the last second, but there was something still off about this. He looked over at Gulfmon and winced a bit at their battle hungry nature, hoping he wouldn't escalate this any further when there was so much more to worry about.

Alright, really, this deaf Gulfmon was no longer doing anybody any favors. There he loomed, as if there was another fight to be had, as the Lobomon was already burning the marks off of their hands. With a sigh, the spirit raised a hand, motioning for the Gulfmon to move with the rest of the camp.
"We're fine. Go get your injuries looked at, already." Hopefully, body language with the words would be clear enough for the demon. Much more pressing, however, was Toki's assessment of the situation. The Lillymon blinked. She was tempted to retort immediately, and defend the spellcaster who had risked his life to try and put the group together - but the more Toki spoke, the more it fit. "Could've he really..."
"Come to think of it, I doubt a single champion level would be able to stifle a fire this big... tch."
If that was the case, could they afford to let it go? Between the beat-up Gulfmon and the worn-out Lagosmon, the Lobomon made his choice. He turned to Toki, and simply asked: "Its clearly not over. Unfortunately, this is the highest form I can take, but given the chance, would you go back out there to check things out?"
If Toki accepted, the Lobomon would give a short nod, and briefly bring his palms together.
"Light into Earth."
His own frame would flicker, a brilliant ray of light radiating from the spirit, towards Toki - and in that light, Toki would feel his frame revitalized, as that loaned spirit energy coursed through him. And as the light would dissipate, the Lobomon would fall to a knee - the spirit wielder, a male, red-haired man in his 30s. Despite his fatigue, he'd give a confident smile.
"Make sure to come back in one piece. I don't want to get chewed out for breaking protocol."

Toki felt awful that Lillymon's faith in Wizardmon faltered. But this was something that had to be investigated further. The fight wasn't over, but at the very least he managed to help get the group of Digimon out of the forest safely, and those who were being manipulated were now free from what was controlling them. He could call it there. Some could say that he's done enough, but Toki wanted answers. Not only that, but he wanted to stop whatever this was so future suffering could be avoided. He looked over at Lobomon and gave a determined nod "If it's to prevent this from spreading further...and to bring this disaster one step closer to its end, then I will do it, gladly."
The forest was a war zone, that much was certain...but what was the goal? What would the attackers get out of this other than mindless chaos? Who else was involved and who else was getting hurt? Toki clenched his fists, driven to do everything he could to end this madness.
He was shocked when the Lobomon passed on some of his energy to him. Any pain he was feeling was gone in an instant, and he watched as Lobomon reverted to a human form "You're a spirit wielder too...?" he said, surprised. He returned the smile and looked towards the forest "I'll do everything in my power. In case something happens to me...my name is Toki Akiyama." he said. He took a couple of steps forward before turning to face the spirit wielder and the other Digimon "Thank you for your bravery and your support. Rest now, you've earned it. I'll take it from here." he bowed his head before he turned to sprint back towards the forest with renewed strength. Whatever was going on, Toki would give it his all to help bring this to an end.

Oh well, it looked like nobody needed mercenary services for the moment and those hands looked fine now. Combined with hand gestures to move along the message was received and to prove it he shrugged.
"Oh well suit yourself." Unlike Toki, Gulfmon didn't put much thought into the current events to him this was just a job and he was no longer in shape to pursue his own invasion one thing though that made him curious was why this mark was such a big deal, why did MetalPhantomon want recruits and more importantly how could Gulfmon take advantage of the situation? For starters, Gulfmon decided to use his newfound spare-time to locate a medical tent. And so he flew around the tent looking for a any sign that someone could treat his injuries, to his relief his hearing was slowly coming back from hearing nothing to partially understanding what's going on. Maybe the medic will let him go with just a cast on the leg and a moral preaching about not absorbing another digimon.

With the MetalPhantomon defeated, the central force of the invasion has been weakened.
Success. But a greater force remains...
