Caught in the Storm (John, Spire, Leith)

"Alright, that's... four," Leith counted himself, Flamedramon, Shoutmon, and Owen among those who accepted the invitation to a time-killing game. As a deck of cards seemed to be generated by the digivice itself (in reality it was merely stored there previously), yet another soldier digimon has asked to join the game. "Five? OK, five, that's a good number." There weren't a lot of places to sit in an arcade, naturally, so Leith and company supposed cross-legged on the floor would just have to do. "Five card draw is easy. First, you get five cards. Your hand is better if it contains special combinations like cards of the same value, all in sequence, or all the same suit. Higher value combos are worth more than lower-value combos of the same type, and rarer combos like straights and four of a kind are worth more than more common ones like one pair. When the round starts you get one chance to exchange some of your cards for different cards from the deck. Then, whoever has the most improbable, highest value combinations wins." After examining his own, Leith decided, "I'll trade one card." Leith then slipped one of his hand cards into the remaining deck, let Flamedramon shuffle it, and drew a new one.
Flamedramon was next. "I'll take two." Shoutmon shuffled for him so he could draw two more.
"I'm good." Apparently Shoutmon was confident with what he already had.
"Thanks for this, by the way, guys. I feel better already." Leith turned toward Shepard. "So, uh..." Leith intended to say the Commandramon's name, but he'd forgotten it. So he tried to move on and cover that fact. "Were you military, too?"

This was good, that there seemed to be food and blankets for everyone here. It wasn't an ideal evacuation center, but, hopefully it would suffice to get everyone through the night. Bezil was by now getting a little hungry too, but he'd accept a cookie from the vending machine and a can of soda for the moment. At least those should keep him awake for night duty.
Bezil was glad that the other Gumdramon was a little more friendly this time around. "That's alright. My name's Bezil by the way, nice to meet you" he'd offer a fist-bump with his paw. It was less formal than a handshake, but he thought it'd be nice to try that.
As Gummy asked questions, Bezil took that as leave to sit down nearby. Not too close, but enough to talk clearly. "Yeah, I'm a Gumdramon" he said, chuckling. "A really furry one I'll grant you, but, something you can't really help if your parents are a Gaomon and a Dorumon".
He hoped this was enough to break the ice here. Bezil was glad to be talking to another of his kind here. He noticed that Gummy was a little bit smaller than he was, but he wouldn't bring attention to it. Instead, he'd try and focus on something that Gummy might enjoy talking about. "So... Justice is your partner and Vee is your brother, right?" he asked, curiously. "I don't have a human partner, so I usually just hang around with dad. I have two brothers though, they're both older than me".
Bezil hopefully wasn't confusing him too much, he knew that families such as his didn't seem to be common in the digital world.
Owen meanwhile was paying attention to the card game. He also joined the group on the floor, crossing his legs and taking off his boxing gloves so he could hold his cards better. Under them, his paws strongly resembled Bezil's - but with three padded "fingers" ending with claws and a fourth that functioned as an opposable thumb.
The Gaomon paid attention to the rules, giving a smile. "Ah, I vaguely remember a game like this back in the old DWR" he remarked. "Not exactly like that, but, I know what a 'straight' is".
Somewhere on the other side of the digital world a certain furred Impmon said "Ha!" But that was irrelevant to the situation at hand.
Owen meanwhile decided on his course of action. "I'll take three" he said, exchanging them, not letting his expression change. But it did when he heard Leith's question to Sheppard. Military too? If affirmative, that would be of interest to him.

John now caught somke shuteye, although he didn't fall asleep and listens to the conversations the others have. Shepard however joined the card game and after catching the basics of it, he started to enjoy it and needed a second before he noticed the question from Leith. "Was I in the military? Well, I was with a squad of other Commandramon, a Sealsdramon commanded us and it wasn't really nice. The Sergeant was a idiot, always send us on stupid missions and we often got hurt. The others were really just following him without thinking about it. One day, I just decided that this was stupid and left the squad, don't even know if the others ever noticed." he asked for three cards and then went on "I ran around the Digital World for a few months and then end up in the human world. In the garage of Johns grandparents, to be precise.". John grunted in return, before he turned around again and now Shepard just looked at the others, waiting for their answers.

When Bezil ushered the friendly gesture to Gummy, he looked at it for a few moments, his brow upwards in a questionable expression. At first, he didn't know how to take in the hospitality, considering that he still brushed him off earlier since he's still mad at that Shoutmon, but on the other, he can't just simply leave him hanging. That'd be rude. He extended his paw and clutched it into a fist, bumping it with the larger Gumdramon.
"Gummy's my name." he said, smiling. His voice was a lit, projecting confidence. He nodded his head, reaching for the soda behind him and took a sip from it as Bezil went to describe himself. He never knew that his species fur could reach that length to the point of fluffiness. He tired to picture himself with the same look, only snorting at the notion. Cute and fluffy don't exactly suited him.
"Yup, You're right on the money. In fact, Specs over there is the one who gave the two of us these shorten nicknames, much to my dismay. So in return, I call him Specs since he wears glasses and is kind of a nerd."
He tilted his head when Bezil said he usually hands around his dad, the Gaomon that was over there playing cards with a couple of others. "Usually?" he questioned, taking a gulp of his drink. "Do you ever do things...like by yourself? Like go off adventuring by yourself for instance."
Justice and Vee meanwhile were still still chilling out, leaning on the wall a couple of feet from the card game that was being played. While watching the game, Vee turned his attention to his brother who was conversing with Bezil. He smiled, they seem to be getting along just fine. Justice on the other hand opened his bookbag and started to work on homework assignments, listening the music with one earbud on. Even though the torrent winds outside were keeping him on a bit of an edge, the rain was somewhat keeping him relived. Sure they're still at a risk for flooding, but he had confidence that the barrier everyone made would hold.
"What'cha working on?" Vee asked, taking one of his folders and looking at some of the papers inside. Most of them had lots of handwriting underneath some questions. Obviously, he had no clue what they meant.
"Ehh, just Calculus homework." Justice said as he flipped a page on his math book.
"Oooh what's that?" Vee's eyes started to glitter with curiosity. "It sounds fancy!"
Resting his chin in his hand, Justice tired to think of a way for Vee to understand it. Hell, not even every human understood what Calculus is, as it was just some advance Math that only intelligent people get. After a few moments, he found an answer.
"Well think of it as this: you hear the wind blowing outside? Before this hurricane made landfall here, the winds slowly started to pick up. As the hurricane reached closer and closer to make landfall, the wind picks up, increasing its speed, and it keeps getting faster the closer we reach to the center of the storm. Calculus is like an arithmetic where you figure out changing speeds and stuff."
Vee nodded his head in response, his eyes narrowed when taking all the information in. "Uh huh ok, ok. I think I'm staring to get it."
"Wait really?"
"Nope. Not in the slightest."
Justice sighed, minute contractions pop up in his face. It was painful for him to be the only one in there to get the gist of this kind of stuff.

"Three, then," Leith acknowledged Owen before exchanging the cards. Best he could he tried to make sure his dealing hands looked predictable and honest because they were. Since Shepard asked for three new cards, he got the same treatment. "So you're a deserter?"
"Leith! If his conscience wouldn't let him stay, then he did the right thing," Flamedramon tried to stand up for their new friend.
It wasn't necessary, however. Leith retreated a bit, defensive but not overly offended. "No, nothing like that. Sorry. That's just the clinical term, y'know? Believe me, I know somethin' about sticking to my guns first. Pretty sure everyone with digivices does, really. Seems like partnered digimon as a prerequisite need some sort of moral comp-" Leith glanced at Shoutmon and almost couldn't resist the easy accidental self-setup, but for once in his life he thought better about it. "-some moral compass. Anyway, show 'em or stow 'em." Of course, since there was no money in a pot there was no second round of betting and, therefore, no apparent point in folding. So Leith showed the group his weak hand: "Pair of fives."
Flamedramon had a slightly better hand to show: "Two pairs, jacks and fives."
"You mean 'Jackson Five?' Like the-" Neither of Leith's partners understood this reference, so neither of them were amused by it. Come to think of it, would the other digimon in the game know anything about that? Leith thought it was doubtful, so he moved on. "-Nevermind. Shout?"
"Bam!" Shoutmon held his cards in a pile in one palm while using the other to dispense them as if they were money. A queen, jack, ten, nine, and eight all fell to the floor in order, not all the same suit but still much better than the other guys. "Straight to queen!"
"A natural straight? I smell Bullmonshit." Leith hadn't forgotten that Shoutmon didn't replace a single card.
"You were dealin', dude." He did forget that, though. Leith frowned but accepted the hand as legit. Shoutmon's smirk seemed a little too happy for winning one round of a stakeless card came, though.
The lone human in the game was able to laugh at his own foolishness this time, at least, but he wasn't quite ready to just let Shoutmon's impeccable luck stand. He playfully plead of the others, "OK, someone please tell me you got somethin' that'll wipe that smirk off his face."

Owen listened to Shepard as he told his story. He was scowling by the end of it in disapproval, but held his tongue for the moment. While yeah, he could come across as a run-of-the-mill loyal to the end no matter what Gaomon, he at least could see enough justification for the Commandramon to act how he did.
"Well, you got a human partner at the end of it, so, suppose the world's gotta move for that to happen" Owen said without grudge.
Bezil meanwhile was somewhat glad that the other Gumdramon reacted to him without hostility. He smiled as the gesture was returned. So, he called his human partner Specs. That fitted, yeah.
Then Gummy asked if he ever did things by himself. This question made Bezil freeze up somewhat, blinking his yellow eyes a little. "Uh... yeah, I've... kinda wanted to go on adventures of my own lately" he admitted. "Just... I like going on adventures with dad too, because he teaches me a lot of things... yet..." he broke off here, unsure of how to continue. Yes, adventuring with his father was fun, but, at the same time, he felt like he wanted to try and go about the digital world by himself lately. This was a difficult thing to answer, so he said nothing for now.
Meanwhile, it came to Owen at the end of it. And the Gaomon couldn't believe his luck at the end of that hand. To begin with, he had absolutely nothing. No chances of pairs, straights, full houses, anything. So his decision to cast down the three cards that would not bring victory to his hand, leaving him with just the 10 and Ace of Hearts made him utterly shocked when he received a four, seven and three of Hearts as well.
"So, uh, Flush here, I guess" Owen said, grinning awkwardly. He wondered how Shephard fared in this.

"Deserter? Never saw myself as a deserter to be honest. You gotta understand, we Commandramon get conscripted in such platoons pretty much from the moment we hatch. We are never given the choice if we want to join. You hatch and the moment a platoon finds you, they take you with them. Most Commandramon are ok with that, but I just never saw the purpose. My commander was an ass, so I just decided that it wasn't worth it."
Sheppard sighed as he rememberd those times, so much wasted time he could have spend differently. He wasn't offended by the deserter comment, he just wanted to explain his situation.
"The Commander never even told us who or for what we were fighting. One day we defend a village, next day we attack one ourselfes. Personally always tried not to hurt any mons that were not fighting bad, but others were less nice."
Sheppards cards were garabge so he lost that round, but he was actually more interested in the others and their stories. It was kinda funny who Bezil was flustered and he mostly just observed the others. Sheppard normally acted funny and strange for some, but he just had made one decision since he left the old squad and met John. Life was just too short and fun to be serious.

Justice couldn't help but overheard the Commandramon's conversation he was having with the Shoutmon, Flamedramon, and the human from earlier. He couldn't help but shuffle his attention to what he was saying, and his homework. When the Commandramon said that his species in his platoon weren't even given a choice to choose and were forced to follow a regime sicken him inside. What kind of system would take away such a basic right?
"They say that the choices we make every minute of everyday can contribute to making someone's life better or worse even without intending to," Justice said, closing his textbook, "and let me say to you my guy, you made the best decision of your life." Vee was shocked suddenly and looked up to him. Usually his Tamer rarely interacted with people unless it involved him, so seeing him actually engaging with socializing drew a smile on his face.
"I think if any person, or Digimon were in your shoes, they would do the exact same thing to be honest; I would anyway. A life of endless possibilities is millions of times better than a life with no purpose only to serve."
Meanwhile, Gummy raised a brow when Bezil drifted off, unable to come up with a proper response to his answer. Maybe if he went on an adventure, he wouldn't know the first thing to do without his dad. After a few moments, he stood up on his feet, reaching the taller Gumdramon's height despite him still sitting down. "Well if you ask me, seeing that you're older and probably have waaaaaaay more experience than me, I think you're ready to go out on your own, don't you?
Gummy stretched his paws towards the ceiling followed by a yawn. " 'Sides, if you encounter any wild Digimon, just bash em in the head with your tail like a nail!" He made a few swings with his tail as he said that in a playful manner, with the tip emitting embers with each swoosh. At this point, he was more comfortable now to act a little childish in front of Bezil. He was another Gumdramon after all.

"Are you kidding me?" Both Leith and Flamdedramon had a laugh at the odds of Shoutmon drawing such a great natural hand and still losing. They laughed a good deal harder and longer than really seemed appropriate, too, though that was partly because Shoutmon looked real upset. "Don't you two start!"
"Come on, Shoutmon. It's pretty funny." Flamedramon was trying to disarmingly grin, but that just seemed to make Shoutmon even angrier. Instead of continuing to scream, though, he went the other way and silently fumed.
What wasn't funny was Shepard's description of his old life. "You're talking about slave-soldiers." Leith didn't think he had to say anything else to either clarify his point or defend it. The new dealer Flamedramon gave him his hand, in which he exchanged two cards, as did both twins with varying amounts of passive-aggressiveness. Apparently the student agreed with him. "See? This guy gets it. Welcome to the world of free will, I guess." The grimmer mood made Leith glance outside, which was a mistake. Anyone paying attention could notice he was suppressing a panic response again. Still, this time he was doing a better job of it.

Owen listened to Sheppard's story with sympathy. Forced to take a side and be prepared to fight from birth? Yeah... he knew what that felt like, and didn't blame him for that.
The Gaomon paused for a moment as he remembered what it was like to be a soldier in the dying days of the Digital World Republic. Accusations of treason being sprayed around through more reflex than reason. Yeah... he couldn't find it within himself to think of a bad thing to say about him.
When he had finished, Owen would offer to reach around and pat his back. "Sorry to hear that, mate. Hopefully now that you've got a human partner to take care of, that won't happen again, right?"
Saying that out loud made Owen consider things. Sheppard sounded like he had been forced into a pretty crappy military situation, and he had deserted for it. Now he had a human partner to justify it. Owen felt something similar, yet, he had no human partner to justify it. But still, that didn't change the fact he wanted to help the digital world.
Owen agreed with Justice's words, Sheppard had made a good call there.
Meanwhile Bezil looked at Gummy as he offered his advice - to go out on his own. The furred Gumdramon pondered this. Yeah, if he went on his own, he'd no longer have his dad by his side, but, he'd had that for quite some time now, and... he felt somewhat ready for what came next. As much as Bezil loved being with Owen, yeah... there would of course be a time when he'd have to go forth and make his own destiny. And perhaps that day was quickly approaching?
"Heh yeah, I reckon you're right!" Bezil replied. "Yeah! I've grown up enough with dad, I wanna try out my own adventures!"
Owen overheard that. It made him flinch a little to hear, but, it was the truth after all. As much as he enjoyed living with and educating his third son, he supposed that the time would soon come when Bezil would find his own path in life. And that was okay. Just the Gaomon wished that this epiphany didn't hit in the middle of a hurricane.
This on top of Shoutmon's reaction to having been beaten in the card game, Owen chuckled a little awkwardly. "Well, better luck next time?" he offered.

"Ah, don't worry about me. That all happened years ago and now I'm happy with my life." Sheppard smiled widely while also thinking about the slave soldiers comment. "Yeah, you could say that we are slaves, but thing is. If slavery was always the only thing you ever knew, you won't really notice that you are slave. Also many Commandramon or Sealsdramon simply don't know who to survive outside of their platoons. I was lucky I found a partner, but other fellow mons end up playing muscles for gangs and just don't make it at all." He stared off a little, to the windows, where the wind was still throwing rain against the glass, before looking down on his shitt hand and remarking. "Come to think of it. If our commanders weren't so shit, we Commandramons could be great police officers ot just protectors. Well, can't change that for now." he sighed, he really had no luck with his cards, but it didn't stop him from playing. John was assleep, buried under his blankets, only his snorring making others aware of his presence.

After the brief exchange, Justice walked towards one of the windows on the other side of the arcade, where no one was there to look outside. Little changed since the storm started. The only thing that did look different through the heavy rain and winds was that the sky had turned to a misty black, a visual clue that nightfall had arrived. Identifiable and unidentifiable items were still flying through the air, some of them were smacking into the building and some just flying by. Vee got up as well to watch it, setting the two In-Training Digimon down near the others to watch the dancing destruction outside. "When is this storm gonna end?" asked Vee, looking at his Tamer with impatience.
Justice walked away towards the window with his hands behind his head. "I'd say several hours," he responded, "So that just means we should start to hunker down for the night." He took his phone out of his pocket and started gaze through his photos. It was all he can do really since there was reception
Vee huff at his response and continued to stare out of the window for a few minutes. The trees that were on the other side of the street were now bent over, almost in half. He watched as he saw one palm tree suddenly pull out of the ground and fall towards the building. Fear quickly sank in and he became wide-eyed.Judging by the angle, it was going to hit where they were standing, and Justice didn't even seemed to notice.
"Justice!" shouted Vee as he ran across the floor and knocked Justice off his feet just as the tree struck the window and it shattered into a thousand missiles flying across the vestibule. The wind coming through the open pane picked the two up and threw them across the room until they smashed into the opposite wall, near where the others were sitting. They slid to the floor with Vee lying on top of Justice.
Gummy, who was still talking to Bezil, suddenly jumped up to hold on to the bigger Gumdramon as the crashing noise rang through his ear. "The hell?!" he yelled.
The other patrons started to panic, as now that the building was compromised, the chance of water pouring in, causing the building to flood was now inevitable at this point.

As the storm intensified, the conversations around Leith got pushed to the background both because of his returning anxiety and just because the wind and rain made casual chat voices too hard to easily hear. "Oh, shit... Guys- guys, deal me out. I'm out!" He shouted a second time because he was afraid he didn't make himself heard the first time. He joined Vee and Justice by the window.
"I'm gonna go with him!" was what Flamedramon shouted before he, too, left his hand on the floor and did as he said.
"Guys, I am not down to sleep in an arcade during a hurricane," he quite enthusiastically objected, "if I can fuckin' sleep at all!" He yelped and cowered when one rock hit particularly hard on the window, though that one didn't penetrate. "Fuck this all!" The next object to come through that window, however, did come through. "Is that a f-" He watched long enough to confirm it was gonna come out of the ground and shouted in his loudest, hoarsest voice, "Everyone, scatter! Cards!" Maybe as a singer he could carry, but with background noise like this maybe not. His digivice heard his command, though, and gave him a few in one hand and a D-Arc in the other. Why? He didn't think he could look around, find cover, and get there faster than he could swipe a certain card he had in mind. He'd used it once before to great effect.
"Down!" Leith almost lost his cards between the wind and the fact that Flamedramon yanked the boy by the shirt backward and inserted himself between the window and Leith, hugging his Tamer close and covering his body. Flamedramon apparently intended to take the glass, but unbeknownst to him Leith had a better idea.
"Digi-modify: Armor of-"
Crash!
"-Earth!" Swiping a card might have been faster, but it wasn't still fast enough. Flamedramon did become encased in rock armor, and that protected him from some of the glass shrapnel as well as the tree itself. It also protected anyone behind him directly, like Leith, from some shrapnel, too. However, the fact that he still grunted in pain a couple times told Leith that a couple of shards had gotten under in the fraction of seconds before the carapace hardened. It was impossible to see where exactly until it came off, but Flamedramon sure knew. "Flame?"
"I'm fine!" he lied, refusing to show his weakness as usual. Leith knew better.
As for Shoutmon, all he could do was cut and run. He threw down his cards and broke for a wall corner, which he got to before glass bullets could. "Oh, this is bullshit!" He was too far for Leith and Flamedramon to hear him.
"We can't stay here! The place isn't safe!"
"No fucking shit!" Leith had to use his comm in his digivice to reach Shoutmon at this distance, now that the wind was howling inside. "Shout, ya gotta tell everyone we need higher ground! Use your mic!"
"Should we digivolve?"
"Fuck no! Sonoramon's wings are just kites in this wind, MegaSeadramon and RedMantaraymon can't move freely on land, and I'm really hoping not to need digimon who swim!"
"Screw this!" Shoutmon summoned his mic from thin air and shouted with an amplified voice, "Yo, boys, we gotta go! Leave your shit and scram!" Leith used Armor of Earth on Flamedramon.NS-32 Card Name: Armor of Earth Type: Modify Rank: Platinum Duration: 3 Posts Effect: Stones and earth assemble around the target Digimon, surrounding them in a powerful earthen carapace. While a very strong defense, it breaks apart as it is struck.
Flamedramon was wounded by shattering glass. Flamedramon's carapace was damaged in the back by a projectile palm tree and partially broke.
Flamedramon is encased in rock armor: 3 posts remaining.

Owen glanced at Sheppard with silent sympathy. He too knew the feeling of that. Not himself, as he had been a volunteer soldier, but, he had to work with conscripts as well, and many of them shared similar thoughts. He was a little surprised that John was sleeping through all this, but supposed with the semblance of safety, he would be wise to take any rest he could. All peace was shattered, quite literally, when the tree broke the window. The hurricane entering the arcade shattered it as a plausible shelter. Wind and rain roared in, and most of those inside understandably panicked. Bezil gasped, and was just about to succumb to fear himself, but, Gummy suddenly held on to him in fear. Bezil paused for a moment to hold down his own fear. He had to be the brave one here. Yeah, his heavy tail meant he'd sink like a stone in a flood. Yeah, being in a storm in the night was terrifying. But... his father had always taught him to at least appear brave when it mattered. After all, if he broke, others would break too. So he had to be brave for them all.
Owen meanwhile noted that Leith for one seemed terrified by all this. Hell, everyone with a working brain would be terrified by this. But he saw that Leith was attended by his partners, so the Gaomon turned his attention to his son first.
Bezil would then lightly pat Gummy on the back to indicate that he acknowledged how frightened he was, then turned to who he deemed to be the authority here. "Dad! What do we do?!" he shouted above the wind. Owen considered things carefully. Most unfortunately, both options were difficult. If they stayed here, they risked being flooded and killed by the storm surge. But if they left, then they would be fully exposed to the rain and wind outside. However, Owen's own power was not something to be discarded. He did not think it possible earlier, due to how exhausted he felt, but, with the situation how it was... with the alternative of having dozens of innocent digimon be swept away and drowned, he couldn't hold back the possibility. "If I evolve to MirageGaogamon, I can help everyone fly to higher ground!" he declared. "But only as the last option. It'll take all of my energy to fly in these conditions, and I don't know if I'll last long enough, but, if that's the decision we end up with, I think I can do it with all your help!" "I know you can do it, dad!" Bezil declared immediately. However, knowing the risk involved, the Gumdramon hoped that other plans might be in play, so he hoped.

Sheppard saw the situation unfold in slow motion. His head had turned around, as the first rock hit the window. "That was a close one." went through his head, before he saw the tree, the flying tree that was heading for the window. Instincts kicked in, as he ducked and covered. Not his proudest moment, as he jumped underneath one of the larger tables. John, who had already fallen assleep, fell of his table bed in shock as the window was broken and needed a few moment to properly orientate himself. Sheppard was already by his side, helping him on his feet again, as the cyborg, digimons eyes scanned the situation. Going outside was out of question, if the storm could tear out trees and throw them around like matches, they would have no chances outside. He heard Owen explain, that he could fly outside, if he evolved to his Mega form, which sounded like it could be possible.
"A strong Mega should be able to resist the storm, even if only for a short period of time. Are you sure you can make it?" Sheppard asked, while his partner had finally recovered from the rude wake up call and falling off the table.
"We could try holding out in the storage rooms in the back. They are a bit more elavated than here, but pretty cramped. In retrospect fortifing them would have been the better idea." well, they couldn't change it anymore, so no good in feeling bad about that mistake.
Still, the storage rooms would only be viable, if the water wouldn't raise two additional metres.
