Stranger In A Strange Land [Carlos]

It would appear that Rin's trust in Carlos had been rewarded. While he did not understand yet, he was still listening! Most people tended to get mad at her at this point. It made her strange smile ever wider. "Why I wanna eat them? So they become part of me! Dad always says I need to become perfect! And by integrating them into me, I make them happy, and become a bit more perfect!" Again, not a shred of malice in her voice. Though the thought of this making them "happy" was a very strange one, indeed. "Dad always says they're just scared of becoming part of me because they don't understand, so they attack me! Then I sometimes have to get rough, but I don't like that much!"

Rin's words did little more than make the man more uneasy, but it wasn't hard to see that not only she meant every word she said, she didn't seem to see any problem with it. Which arguably made it a lot creepier for sure, but a strange, somewhat desperate idea occured to the man.
Maybe she could be reasoned with? Clearly she had to be simply very misinformed, either by an equally misinformed parent...or a rather malicious one. Would there be someone evil enough to outright lie to his child like that? If so he would love to give them a piece of his mind someday...but right now? He would have to make due with talking Rin out of continuing this dark path, if that was even possible at this point.
"Rin that's...not how things work..." Carlos said, shaking his head, and he would have continued his explanation...had something rather expected happened. Dio had now jumped out of the man's backpack, and was now standing in front of the "girl" whilst still in his cat shaped holosuit.
"Has it ever occurred to you or your father that maybe we aren't happy being loaded?!" The black and white cat would say in barely contained anger as it glared at Rin, baring his fangs. "You aren't making anyone a part of anything, you're just killing digimon and eating what's left of them!"
The man felt a cold sweat run down his back, things could get really out of control now unless they dialed the aggression down. "Dio, stop! We can't start a fight here of all places."

The look of confusion only deepened on Rin's face as Carlos said that this was not how things work. "Eh? What? How can that be wrong?? Dad told me about it! He's the smartest Digimon there is! He and Mum are science folk!" She seemed indignant at the very idea of her parents being wrong...but she was not rejecting it. She was listening attentively to Carlos' explanation when Dio jumped out out the backpack. It made Rin jump back, and instinctively assume a more defensive form. When she landed, her arms had turned into Bearmon claws, and a tongue lolled down from her open ribcage as she stood on all fours. She looked tense, with pupils reduced to tiny slits, but when she saw that this was just a cat, she relaxed. "Oh hey, a talking kitty! I didn't know kitties could talk!" Eh? And the kitty was mad? It just confused Rin more. "Eh? Why wouldn't they be happy? They become part of me, the ultimate Digimon! That's the best thing ever!" Whoever this girl's Father was, he seriously messed up her reasoning.

As per usual, Rin showed no signs of grasping the full picture. Carlos sighed, wondering to himself why he had decided to get involved into this mess. At any rate, he tried to explain things to her to the best of his ability...which admitedly, was a bit much to ask for someone that didn't fully understand how digimon worked.
"You see Rin, by loading a digimon you have absorb all of their data, right? Kinda in the same way as you do when you eat something. And usually when you eat living things they tend to...well, stop living after being eaten. You see where I'm going with this?"
That was of course, an incredibly simplistic and basic way of explaining things that were anything but, sure, but it was clear he had to take it easy and slow with Rin, who clearly was even less aware of the inner workings of digimons life cycles than even Carlos. And he would have gladly kept explaining, had Dio's sudden appearance not caused a rather...unexpected effect on Rin.
Carlos was rendered speechless as her body twisted and shifted into something...something that was clearly not human. Hands turned into claws, her chest ripped open as if it were a mouth (tongue hanging out and everything). It was nothing short of nightmarish, and any attempt that Carlos had at remaining calm jumped straight out of the window as soon as this happened. He found himself stumbling backwards in surprise, falling on his rump and narrowly avoiding falling on the box hiding the Elecmon, though quite frankly the man had now completely forgotten about them, both eyes and mind completely fixated on the...thing Rin had become right in front of him.
"HOLY SHIT!" Really, was there anything else he could have said?
The shock obviously extended to Dio, whose holosuit flickered out in an instant as he jumped back a bit, revealing his true form in the process. THe impmon now stood between the human and the digimon (?) that was Rin, bright red fire coming from his hands, his stance tensed as if waiting for the girl to lunge at them at any minute. But even in such an alert state he was more than able to give her a piece of his mind.
"...ultimate digimon? You're nothing but an abomination." He spat, a mixture of pure fear and raw anger in his tone. He had never seen anything remotely like her in his entire life, and he certainly wished that was still the case, but that didn't mean he was gonna run away with his tail between his legs.
He could only sneer in barely contained fury at her. Was she really this dense about how loading really worked?
"You don't get it, do you? You're not simply inviting everyone to a freaking tea party in your stomach, you're killing them and robbing them the chance to be reconfigured!"

Oh! The cat as a Digimon! Great, more Data to add to herself! Carlos' words had gone over her head now that she had the prospect of two meals! That she shocked Carlos to fall over was nothing new to her, people tended to react that way to her! Still on all fours, her chest maw began to drool, as did her actual mouth, her expression turning blank and soulless...until Dio spoke. "A-a-a-abomination?" She knew what that word meant. It wasn't nice. Her expression changed, slowly drawing into...a very sad face. In fact, she began to cry. She sat down, chest still open, and just bawled her eyes out. Multiple eyes, as on her collar bone and shoulders more eyes opened unconsciously and cried, too. "Waaaaah! Why would you call me that! I just...I just do what my parents tell me to do! They say there is nothing bad about this! They say it's a good thing! Why....they would never lie to me! They have no reason to lie to me!" It would appear that someone had been pushed to the edge of an epiphany.

For Carlos it felt as if things were rapidly going to hell in a handbasket. From Rin's sudden transformation to Dio's harsh words and aggressive demeanor, he was sure viouence would be quick to explode, and that he and his partner would have to run out of there as fast as their legs could carry them.
But...things took a quick turn in a direction neither of them could predict: after Dio's verbal assault Rin seemed clearly affected by his choice of words, but not the way they expected. Being called something as awful as an abomination didn't sent her into a rage, it didn't even prompt her to insult the impmon back...it made her cry. Such a complete shift from what she had been acting like so far took the two of them completely aback, both man and digimon staring at her in both surprise, shock...and even some regret.
And while seeing her sprout out even more eyes just to cry was...offputting to say the least, it was still nothing short of heart breaking to see just how distraught she was over this. By now Carlos couldn't see a terrible creature that feasted on digicores for feeding, he could only see a scared, confused kid that didn't know any better.
And it was with this thought in mind that he did something he never thought he'd do: he got back on his feet and, after dusting himself of some, slowly approached Rin.
"H-hey, wait!" Dio warned the man, fearing this might all have been an elaborate ruse, but it was too late to stop him now: he was now kneeling close to the crying digimon, and slowly reaching out with his arm he'd calmly and gently place a hand on Rin's shoulder. "There there, it's ok." He'd reassure her, his tone calm and reassuring, a far cry from the unsure bemusement he had felt during the past minutes. And if Rin were to look up at him, she'd find his tone was not the only thing that seemed different, as his expression had softened quite a bit, and while his eyes still had a small hint of doubt and curiosity in them, they were also filled with a gentle warmness that he rarely showed. "For what it's worth Rin, I don't think you're just a monster. Monsters don't cry." Was this really gonna get through to her? Furthermore, would she even take offense to him using the word monster in such a context? She was a digimon after all. Hopefully he'd get a positive response soon enough...or at least not end up with his arm bitten off.

And so, Carlos had overcome his natural fear and carefulness, and embraced the monster. If this were a horror movie, he'd be messily devoured now. But this was not a horror movie. Rin sniffed as she looked up at Carlos and...hugged him back. As she did, all the scary parts, the maw, claws and eyes, all receded, returning her to her normal, human-like form. "I'm...not a monster...not an abomination...I just wanna...I just wanna be perfect...because my parents say that's what I was born to do..." She sniffed again, still crying. "Why...why would they say I was made to do something when...when it makes people call me a monster...?" As if the horrifying transformations had never happened, Rin just sounded like a confused child right now.

Carlos was understandably glad his attempts at getting closer to Rin hadn't ended on her feasting on his dead body like he feared, but rather on her actually hugging him (though thankfully after getting rid of her ribcage maw.) It took him aback for a moment...before he reciprocated and wrapped his arms gently around the crying mon, gently patting her in the back. By his own admission he wasn't good with kids, yet he wasn't making any conscious effort in trying to help console Rin. It was almost as if all was coming to him naturally for some reason. Or maybe he was just good at improvising.
Sadly, he didn't have any good answer for her confused questions, though if anything he really wanted to give her so called parents a piece of his mind. He obviously couldn't tell her that though.
"I wish I knew..." He admitted with a sigh, before saying, "But you can still make things right. You don't wanna be called a monster, right? Well, a good start would be not loading other's data, people get scared if you do that all willy nilly." He said, trying to explain things to her in a simple way.
"If you get hungry, you can always eat something better like that ramen you like so much." He added with a smile, trying to change the subject to something she would probably enjoy more. That's when an idea occured to him. Something that would hopefully help distract her from her current crisis and maybe even cheer her up some. "Would it make you feel better if we bought you some now?"
Dio of course rolled his eyes at this, but wisely chose to stay silent, simply sitting grumpily on one of the many boxes of the alley as he waited for Rin's answer.

Rin nodded softly. It did not make sense for her to *not* try and eat data willy-nilly. She'd been raised being told that this was her main purpose in life, to absorb data and become perfect, and that it was a good thing to do. And now she was to just stop it and no longer do it? Why? Why was it bad? Why was she raised to do something that was bad? It made no sense to her.
The promise of food did throw her out of her circling thoughts, though. She wiped her eyes and gave Carlos a small smile. "Y-y-yeah, lets go eat Ramen!" The Beast, it seems, had been placated.

"Atta girl." He smiled, carefully helping Rin up. To be honest, he didn't expect things to go this well, but hey it was better than the many grisly alternatives his overactive imagination kept conjuring up.
Dio still didn't seem exactly thrilled, but knew better than to try and argue with Carlos. Once he got an idea in his head he was too stubborn to let it go, much like the imp himself. So with a small flicker of data he'd turn on his cat holosuit once again and return to the tamer's backpack with a single jump.
As the duo left the alleyway behind hoping Rin would follow suit, Carlos looked back once before they turned around the corner, hoping that one Elecmon would somehow be able to find it's way back to the digital world on their own. He would have helped but he had a bigger problem in his hands right now.
Truth be told he didn't really know what else to do with Rin: leaving her alone seemed like a rather irresponsible thing to do, but he wasn't exactly looking forward to the possibility of taking her to his home either. Ah well, he'd figure something out during lunch, and luckily for the three the man had seen a small ramen place not too far from the alleyway.
Ignoring the odd looks given by some of the patrons inside the restaurant (who were no doubt questioning the girl's choice of clothing) the man lead Rin to a table tucked away in a corner of the establishment, somewhat out of view from most of the prying eyes of the people.
He glanced at one of the small menus already placed on the table, and before he started making up his mind as to what to order (as well as questioning how his life choices had led him to such a situation) he looked up back at the blonde digimon.
"So uhm...you have any ramen you like the most, Rin?"
