A Grand Old Tale [Cassandra/Carlos/Titania]
|
Post by Dr. Mikemon on Jan 4, 2019 1:36:29 GMT
It all started with one question: 'Where do Sovereign go when they die?'
As it would turn out, however, there were so many more questions to ask. What were the Sovereign, how did they come to be? If at all, how was Calumon related to them? Even to Mikemon and some members of the field club, Calumon's existence was a strange one. He was a kindred, kind, and unintentionally goofy spirit, but there was just something about him that put Mikemon on edge, and something about him that would make a certain doctor grit her teeth in his presence.
But just what did Calumon know?
To Mikemon's surprise, it didn't take much for him to agree to tell the story - in fact, he seemed ecstatic to tell the tale! It didn't take long to organize a time and place: about two hours after the Library's 'open hours', Mikemon had Stingmon set up a table in the Library's common room, a smiling Calumon standing on the far end. "Honestly, I'm surprised it took you this long to ask! With how crazy everything's been, well, you know..." The Calumon retracted his ears, looking up as if to think. "So, who's coming to listen?"
"Well," Mikemon gave a twitch of his ear, sitting at the side. "Carlos, and maybe Dio... Titania... and a friend from outside the library, 'Argent'."
"Mm... well, okay!" The Calumon smiled, and waited. Heck, its been forever since he could do 'something' here!

'Argent' could feel the prickle of the Calumon's presence the second she stepped inside of the library. Their data signal like nails on a chalkboard to their senses and the low agitated thrum of the D-reaper like static where it thrashed through their connection that was currently shoved toward the back of the farthest reaches of her mind. The Sorcerimon had made it a point to show up early in case the little marshmellow reacted to her like it so often did to Mikemon. Giving it a chance to spill whatever secrets it had to an empty room rather then a small audience as the Doctor disguised as digimon slipped through the door and quietly close it behind her. Eyeing the tiny creature with impassive blue eyes as she carefully blocked the entrance with her body giving the little pipsqueek time to blurt out whatever piece it might have to say. "Good afternoon Mikemon...Calumon." She greeted polite if reluctant of the tiny white creature who's mere presence screamed across her senses that it should not be. Once she was certain it was done or would avoid speaking of whatever had first crossed it's mind upon her entering she would move to take her place furthest from the tiny creature. Unblocking the door in the process as she slunk into her chair. Carefully the Sorcerimon set the D-terminal strapped to their wrist to 'record.'

The opportunity to actually learn about such higher beings as the Sovereigns was a rare one, and one that Titania would not forgive herself for squandering if she did. This was why she had to (regrettably) leave Nereid with Mizu for a bit. The fairy had raced down the halls of the Library to the common room, though for something with arguably less sinister intent this time.
Titania was surprised to see a face she hadn't seen in quite some time--Argent. The Sorcermon from the bar. "Ah. Long time no see." She spoke as she flew towards a seat and reclined...On the arm of said seat. Remember, Tinkermon were short most of the time.

Ever since the incident last week, Carlos had been trying his best to take it easy for a while, so as to not reopen any of his wounds. As such, most of the past week had been spent lazing around the Library and it's surroundings. As slow and uneventful as some days were, it was a welcome change of pace for them both, even Dio seemed to be enjoying this small moment of respite for a change.
It was during such time that they had been called rather out of nowhere by the Doctor for an "Important Meeting" in the common room. Something about asking questions to Calumon. From what little they knew about the small being, he was possibly tied to the Sovereigns and as such, to the whole mess that had been happening for a while now. Hopefully it would shed some light into all the obscure recent happenings, and even if it didn't at least the man and digimon could finally stop feeling left out of the loop. As the duo made their way into the room, Carlos took a moment to wave and greet everyone inside.
"Hey Doc, Calu, Titania and..." he'd stop for a moment, looking at an unfamiliar figure of a Sorcerimon. While there was the faintest feeling of familiarity coming from them, Carlos was fairly certain neither he nor Dio had met them before. But if Mikemon was fine with them being here, then it was probably nothing he should worry about. So simply nodded politely in their direction and, not wanting to stall the meeting with introductions, took a seat opposite to where the Sorcerimon and Titania were, Dio sitting on the chair next to him.
Of course, he was the first to ask the obvious question.
"So...what's this all about?"

"Ah, good afternoon, Argent. Your studies going well?"
Mikemon returned a nod to the sorceress, and the Calumon... well, he simply tilted his head, as if unsure of how to make this figure standing in the door. Outwardly, she seemed friendly enough - and there wasn't enough to challenge that thought - but there was just something 'off' about her.
Whatever it was, he seemed to just let it roll off his back, as Titania made her appearance! Though, just the fairy? Ah, that was fine - Calumon gave a wave, as Titania, Carlos, and Dio made their way into the room.
"Hey Doc, Calu, Titania and..."
"Argent," Mikemon nodded, filling in the blank. "A student from Whitewater. I occasionally give a lecture out there, and she attends. Argent's quite astute."
No part of that was a lie, which made it 'good enough' to slip by Calumon's suspicions. But, yes, why were they here? "Hm? You didn't tell him?"
"I told Carlos." Mikemon rolled his eyes, a smirk on his face as he explained: "Well, we know Calumon here had, at the very least, a connection to Baihumon, so I asked him if he knew anything about the Sovereign themselves. And, well-"
"I figured if I'd be telling the cat, I should try and tell it to the rest of the club as well!" The Calumon beamed... but then gave a pause. "But then, where to start..."
Oh, good. Right away, the Calumon seemed stumped, Mikemon returning a nervous chuckle. "Well, do you know how the Sovereign came to exist in the first place?"
"Um... oh! You mean how those four became what they are?"
... Alright, some headway! "Became? Were they something else, before?"
"Well, yeah? I mean, before they had to step up, they were just 'paired Digimon'. I'd say, individually, only about as powerful as Dio can get?"
Well, that certainly put things in a different light.

"Hello again Titania. It is good to see you once more." The Sorcerimon greeted politely even turning to incline their head in a more distant, but equally well mannered nod to Carlos and Dio as they spotted them eye her person. Otherwise though the little mage seemed content to remain in their far flung seat. Merely pulling up a data pad to take notes as the recording ran it's course and doing their best to ignore Calumon's strange glances. She might have disliked the little marshmellow, but she wasn't above taking advantage of this information to do something about the numerous issues with the D-reaper their supposed key to fixing the problem failed to bother to complete.
Listening quietly to the lecture the Sorcerimon even bothered to politely raise their hand waiting a moment until they were certain the pipsqueak had seen them before calmly making their inquiry. "You mentioned that prior to their ascension they were paired Digimon. Do mean paired as in partnered to human tamers?" The Researcher questioned lowering their hand once their curiosity had been voiced.

Titania gave a wave to Carlos and Dio. "Yo!" If anyone knew the reason as to why the fairy was alone? Naoko was still on break. That was going to end soon, but right now that was how it was.
"Likewise. I do hope your research has gone well, my friend." Titania regarded Argent with cheer, before she returned her attention to Calumon. So the local peanut butter ruffian did have some knowledge about the four Sovereign after all...Well, of course all legends would have to start as something but...The fairy raised a hand promptly after Argent had spoken.
"Paired digimon? Er...Adding onto what Argent said, would that mean there were tamers all the way back when the Sovereign became...well, the Sovereign?"
If so, how long had the Digital World existed?

Well, with that Mikemon had answered one question, at least, though it made Carlos wonder how many people outside of the Library knew about Calumon's location...or even his existance.
"Well then, pleased to meet you, Argent." He added, before turning to the other two, paying close attention to whatever the small white digimon would share. His opening statement was short, but it was already giving them quite a lot of insight: what with the Sovereigns not only being paired digimon (whatever that meant) and starting out being not any stronger than Dio.
While the imp was a bit unsure on how to feel for being as an example (and about how easily Calumon could gauge his current power), he took some solace knowing that even the Sovereigns started out relatively small. And who knew? Maybe he'd be able to get to the same point as them...eventually.
Argent and Titania were the first to ask pretty good questions, but instead of waiting for an answer, Carlos went ahead and asked too. This was a one in a lifetime oportunity, might as well make the most of it, right?
"So not more powerful than a Mega. But then how did they change?" Carlos asked, adding on to the many questions brought up by the other two, something Dio would soon add on to with, "Or should we be asking why?"

With Argent making a smooth-enough presence with the rest of the group, the Calumon could start his story, and listen to the many questions that were to come. What the little Digimon started with, however, was an admittedly hard thing to believe:
Even back then, there were 'paired Digimon'? The Calumon blinked at the questions. Argent wanted clarification, Titania wanted to know if there were tamers, and Carlos and Dio, well, they simply wanted to know what happened!
"Well, yeah. They were paired with human partners, and there definitely were tamers back then - I saw them!" The Calumon smiled towards Argent and Titania, but to Carlos and Dio, the Digimon's ears retracted back - a bit of a somber look in his eyes. "Well, back then, the Digital World was quite a different place. There were no 'cities' or 'buildings'. Most of the World was much like how you'd see the forest or mountains today."
"... Interesting... I wonder if the cities came with human intervention..." Mikemon muttered. "Though there's nothing that archaic in our own history books."
"And it wasn't just the world that was different. Honestly, the Digital World back then was a scary place. Digimon fought for territory and power. Even Ultimates were rare and dangerous. Its why I stuck with the humans - they were nice. Well, maybe a bit brash and silly, but they meant well..."
But, right: Dio's question still hung out there. 'Why'.
"Anyway..." Calumon sighed, "as the fighting got worse, it started to have an effect on the world itself. Megas fighting other megas created a force strong enough to even make holes start appearing in the sky - and after a big fight, where the tamers managed to finally beat some big, scary demon, well, they were all out of energy. What if they had to fight like that tomorrow?"
"Could the world really go on much longer, like that? So... I guess I don't know 'why', but through one of those 'holes' in the sky, as if answering that thought, a big, bright light sprouted forth on four of them like big spotlights! I remember my forehead being really 'hot' at that point, too," he rubbed the mark on his head, "and, somehow, those four managed to 'change' into those bigger forms. The dragon, the phoenix, the tortoise, the lion... I don't know if you'd call it 'Digivolving', but..."
Even Calumon seemed a bit confused, as to what happened at that instant. But if that story rang true, that raised a problem to Argent's first question:
Had a Sovereign ever died?

"Wait~" Argent murmured lifting a hand politely once more, "You're saying the world was failing to repair itself so this was prior to the creation of the D-reaper? So the Sovereigns pre-date that systems existence?" The Research questioned jotting down a few notes. If so then speaking with a Sovereign likely could have given invaluable historic data and insight on the D-reaper and it's origin. Now if only the majority of them weren't bent of murdering her for her mere existence.
"Please go on. I assume their elevation must have served a specific purpose to forwarding the digital world." The Sorcerimon murmured gesturing for the Calumon to continue and finding herself cursing the fact that due to her unique anatomy that the most she could manage before coming here was a half decent buzz. While drinking and research rarely went well together she had promised Mikemon she wouldn't rend the tiny creature limb from limb and the only feasible way she could see herself tolerating or even liking the marshmallow was if she was black out drunk. With a buzz her initial urges to maim and flee were at least blunted.

Surprising as this was, this also naturally led to more questions from everyone, it seemed. "...Guess my dad was right about how you never stop learning, huh?" It sounded like such a vivid story, too.
"I wonder if that...elevation was a form of biomerging. I mean...Those humans haven't been seen since then, right?" Titania felt like...well, while she felt like her question was dumb, she also was of the mindset that putting her questions out there was better than leaving them for the last minute.
The fairy tapped her claws against her chin a few times. "It was for a higher purpose, too. Like most acts that involve tearing a hole in the sky and having something pour out of it...I think? I've been binging way too much anime, man..."

Well, one thing was for certain: Carlos was glad he had gotten to explore this version of the Digital World. Calumon's description made the old times sound far less pleasant, almost mirroring the older ages of the Earth, where giant creatures roamed and civilization as they knew it would not be a thing for hundreds of thousands of years.
What he really wanted to know is when exactly this could have happened, at least in Earth years, but measuring Earth time inside the digital world was iffy at best, and it was unlikely Calumon would even know how many years had been, considering how the Club had supposedly found him in the first place.
And even if Titania's suspicion was partially inspired by anime or not, Titania did raise an interesting point, at least to Dio, the four digimon ascending into Sovereigns wasn't incidental. "Well but if it was for a higher purpose...then there has to be something out there even more powerful than the Sovereigns? That power had to come from somewhere."
And that still left more unanswered. Carlos scratched the back of his head, unsure which question to ask next."So what happened to them afterwards? How can something that powerful just dissapear like that?"

"Mm... I don't think it was biomerging either..." Answering Titania's question, the Calumon scratched the back of his head. "Honestly, the tamers looked like they were more in shock like something like that could happen. Their Digivices did vanish with that light, though."
That was one question that was easy to answer. Argent's, though, almost made the Calumon strain in thinking. "... Maybe? I don't remember seeing any red stuff, and I definitely woulda remembered the weird eyeball things with their wavy arms and sharp-looking swords." His attention then turned to Dio. "I mean, the light did appear through one of those holes?"
"Hm... if there can be a rift from the human world to the Digital one, it stands to reason that other barriers could have been broken, too. Given that the Sovereign share traits with each-other that no Digimon has yet to achieve, maybe the light was a different type of energy that only exists in that realm." Mikemon was more thinking on the fly, there - there was nothing to prove or disprove his theory. And if it even was right, it was completely up to interpretation whether it was a random circumstance or actually the will of the divine.
Calumon didn't have an answer either, but he did know what happened afterwards!
"Of course," he continued, "having four really 'big' data signals like that quickly drew in the surrounding crowd - but what was previously a challenge to them, each of the 'Sovereign' only had to exert a small part of their energy to hold back. There was no longer a question in the world of 'what was the strongest', so, instead, they decided it would be better to be under their protection."
The Calumon tapped his foot, trying to think it through. "I think the Sovereign must have used what they learned from the humans - because from there, those four acted more as 'pillars' to the world, rather than terrifying beasts. See, the four quickly decided that it would be best to split up, each to their own part of the world. The Baihumon took to the mountains, the Azulongmon to the desert, the Zhuqiaomon to the wastelands, and the Ebonwumon to the forests."
"That way, each could hold their own way to 'rule'. And because they had split up like that, well, the four actually had to work as a team even more than if they had stuck together - you know, because each of the four 'lands' each had things that the other three did not. Because of their importance and power, each was able to form their own towns, where Digimon had to work together to further themselves."
"... So those would be the first 'countries' of the Digital World?" Mikemon blinked, honestly astonished. "Where were you in all this?"
"Honestly, I didn't see most of them after they split! Except for a few visits to see the turtle, I spent much of my time in the mountains with Baihumon. But for the most part, things worked out..."
"... For a while..."

"A while?" The question lingered in the air the fate of the Tamers left unspoken though with the bond broken between them and their digimon...even if the sovereigns were still themselves such an actions had to be painful. To lose your partners. To be alone and cut off was a fate in Cassandra's mind worse then death. Still even if the world had become idyllic with their ascension nothing so perfect could last forever.
Time stopped for no man nor digimon.
"What happened next?" The Researcher inquired voice steady, blue eyes calm from where they peered out from behind the blue scarf the obscured most of the Sorcerimon's face.

It was for reasons like this that Titania enjoyed listening to stories. Hearing the experiences of others did tend to offer a bigger picture to look at the world with. "So...Let's just go with 'it was something that was far stronger than Biomerging or just becoming Super Mega?' Would that be a bit more accurate?"
...How long was a while? Titania again decided to throw something onto Argent's question. "How long's a while? Like...until you got brought here?"
Anyways, her questions were all provided for now, so there only remained one thing. Where did this tale go next? The fairy listened intently for when that came.
