To Everything There Is A Season [Denryu/Cas]

While Cassandra knew she could not stray from her course Mikemon's words still haunted her. She knew she was playing a dangerous game. Luminas tinkered on the brink of the edge and while she would gladly unbalance the lot of them when the dust settled Team Metal Drive as it was would not be heralded as heroes. Not even as mercenaries. No as of now the black stain on their record would eventually be the noose by which they would all hang. They needed to be too valuable for that.
Rubbing a hand over her eyes Cas paused in watering her growing greenhouse. One room meant solely for the D-reaper mimicking plants having expanded into a second larger room for medicinal herbs and she had little doubt when the team returned they would likely convert one of the larger bays into a garden. Xros teams weren't cheap to feed after all. Still she needed to speak to the General, but speak of the devil and they shall appear. Catching sight of movement out of the corner of her eye Cassandra paused in her watering to half turn.
"General~" She greeted the man standing in the doorway with a nod, "I was about to go looking for you." Cas added as she set her watering can aside. Technically she had a simple automatic watering system that would take care of such things, but there was something distinctly human to caring for the plants herself. Something soothing to standing amidst the budding greenery.

With Denryu past his brief slump in the real world, the General hardly had a moment's rest. Not only did he have to track down the rest of his army, he also had to get used to Tenebrous, the new base, and even get used to the new team structure.
For now, Denryu was just glad to make his way back to the base. Taking a careful look over his shoulder, the masked General made an inconspicuous turn around the corner, entering into the former Chaos Arena. It didn't take him long to make his way down the central elevator, and run into the doctor, just at the doorway.
"Doctor." He returned a nod, and briefly held out his Xros Loader to the side - a yawning Renamon and a Reppamon appearing in a flash of light off to his side. "Angel, show Guru around. Remember, he's not quite used to our pace yet."
"I got it... come along this way, newbie." Still stretching out her arms, the fox would lead on, Guru giving a short nod to Cassandra as he walked on by.
"Just got back from visiting Emma. How's the greenery project going?" His eyes glanced off to the side. Based on how bright that room was, it seemed like Cassandra actually managed to get those contraptions working! "And, I guess I should ask, you were going to come look for me? Something come up?"

"Angel," Cas greeted pausing at the newcomer until she caught his name from Denryu, "Guru." She greeted aswell before turning her attention back to the Xros General himself as the Renamon departed with the odd new Xros component. Leaving Cas to ponder what part he would play in the team, but content enough to wait and see.
"The first greenhouse is doing quite well, but it's a smaller room and the plants there don't depend as much on light. The second room is coming along. The seeds and cutting Gazi fetched me seem to be doing well under the grow lights. Though it will likely be a month or so before we really see much progress, but it would be nice not to have to go too far afield for some of the more difficult to attain components." The Doctor mused with a low pleased hum at her work. True it was far less involved then a difficult surgery or carefully concocted antidote, but it would provide a solid base for their medical operations.
"I think for now I'd say the project is a success. I'll put in an order for more gardening supplies and see about converting one of the bigger bays into an indoor garden for feeding the army." She explained before noting the tension in his shoulders.
"There is something I wish to speak with you about, but it is nothing pressing. How did your visit with Emma go?" Cas added quick to put the man's fears at ease. All of them had been walking on eggshells of late.

"Doctor." Guru returned that one-word introduction, noticing it as 'par for the course' for this team, at least from what he's seen. As Cassandra started to explain the condition of the greenhouse, Denryu peered briefly inside the door to see the multiple seedlings starting to take root. "Hopefully nothing gets too out of control growing here. Its not like we'll have a place to replant them..."
Well, he wasn't much for having a green thumb as it was, anyway. He gave a brief nod to the mention of gardening supplies. "Good; a few of 'em could use a leaf or two in their diet." Of those that even ate organic material, anyway.
Denryu gave a blink, as Cassandra turned the topic back around. "Well enough. Emma's going to be spending some time in London, for now. Apparently, she's looking into some potential electrical interference - past that, she's still letting her fractal code settle down from the desert incident. Incidentally..."
The General gave a pause, reaching into his bag, pulling out a... 'Magic the Gathering' binder, of all things - entirely in Emma's taste. "It seems that Emma did manage to slip out of Paradise with these."

Cassandra couldn't prevent the low impressed whistle from leaving her lips at the sight of the binder. Already suspecting what lay within. "May I?" The Doctor inquired holding out her hand until the General placed the binder in her grip. Flipping open the book her admiration only grew further.
"Gods damn how many cards was she hoarding?" Cassandra muttered under her breath flipping through the binder briefly before handing it back with a shake of her head and a wry smile upon her lip.
"Care for a cup of tea or coffee? I find it's easier to talk with something warm to drink in hand." Cas offered turning to pad her way down the hall only pausing to see if the General would follow, hopeful, but not expactant. Upon reaching the kitchen she'd set about readying a pot of tea for herself and setting the percolator for the General himself.
"We'll have to see of we can't pick up one of your Kruig cup makes here soon, but Gazi's been fairly successful and getting the basic essentials." Cas murmured spooning out the ground coffee into the percolators filter.
"I saw Dr. Mikemon today..." She added voice low.

"How many? 'Enough', is how she put it." Even Denryu gave a small chuckle at that one. "She knew how to track them down, anyway. I would say a good part of our income in the slower months came just from her side hustle."
Taking the binder back in hand, Denryu would give a nod, stowing it back away as he followed her down the hall. "Coffee, of course. At this point, even a cheap Folgers sounds good." Of course, beggars couldn't be choosers. So as to not have Cassandra do everything, Denryu set up the percolator himself, carefully measuring out the coffee.
"Hopefully we can. Never... really been a fan of these things." He gave a sigh - his attention perking as Cassandra brought up the cat.
"Really? What was he doing all the way down in our neck of the woods? You invite him?"

"Fan or not they're a bit sturdier then a Kruig." Cas quipped a wry smile warming her lips those crimson eyes glittering in faint amusement at the Generals expense. Still the coffee was nicer then Folgers at least, the Doctor only faintly remembering the brand of a Columbian Black coffee she recalled seeing in the stores in Shibuya her Foster Father had favored and requesting Jegan acquire it. It wasn't much, but the comforts of home eased the stark contrast.
"He was actually here on business. Apparently there's a hallucinogenic drug being peddled here in Tenebrous and other black markets and the Terminus law enforcement had him concoct an identifier chemical for it. I'll be having my own contacts look into it as we don't need that kinda of heat right now. If they're putting out enough of a quantity to get this much attention then it's a problem." The Doctor explained carefully filling her teapot as she set it on the burning before leaning back against the counter.
"He had...concerns about my association with you." Cas spoke her voice soft as she watched Denryu work.
"While I assured him that I am fine and that our partnershi[ is of my own choice his arguments were not entirely without merit." She added running a hand through her hair with a sigh before she posed her question.
"What are you long term plans in regards to the digital world Denryu? Do you see any future here or simply plan to go about your business before retreating and retiring to the human world one day?"

"I suppose." He couldn't complain about the amenities, really. Heck, the fact that Cassandra was able to get a backup base going - the basement that it was - was quite an admirable feat. It didn't take long for the percolator to get going, and so for the moment, Denryu took a seat across from Cassandra.
Hm... here on business? "... Unsurprising, but definitely not the sort of heat we need." He agreed with Cassandra's approach, of course, and Denryu took a mental note to be on the look-out for that sort of thing. But then Cassandra got to the meat of it.
Of how the cat had concerns for the doctor. Being associated with him. To that, all Denryu could do was give a sigh. He couldn't argue, of course, nodding as Cassandra said that his complaints were at least somewhat valid. "Even outside of Luminas, my actions aren't usually seen in the best light. If we were at all recognized in the desert incident, you can be certain that we'd be wanted in every city." That much really went without saying.
Still, that last question stuck out. What were his plans with the Digital World? "If I didn't love this world, I wouldn't be sticking my neck out so far for it. I do see a future here, Cassandra." He took a moment, just to pull together his thoughts. "These Digivices didn't choose us by chance. They are our link to this world. And I choose to believe that we are supposed to accomplish something with that link. I'll admit, I've tripped a few times," he nodded, "but I'm not about to stop. I've got eight... well. Now, at least 11 others counting on me."

No one saw themselves as a villain. No one intended to hurt the peoples and places they loved, but still Denryu's words admittedly did much to ease Cas's fears. The lingering paranoia that while she believed the General to be a decent person with good, if misguided intentions at first, that such constructs might simply be disillusion of her own mind. Fearing that the digital world, the world she now lived in and was confined to, was nothing more than an opportunity to be exploited by him. She had been used once. Never again.
"I don't know the extent of your history only that you've burned a lot of bridges..." Cassandra murmured settling into her chair as she glanced up to meet the General's ice blue eyes. "Ours though is not one of them." She assured him softly.
"The good thing about bridges though is that while they come and go rivers stay the same. We can build more bridges. In fact I would advise us work on improving Metal Drives reputation." She suggested though the Doctor lifted a hand to give the man pause.
"I only have one request however," Cassandra spoke, "We are equals in this. Feelings aside neither of us will survive taking the weight of the whole team. The stress alone would eat us alive. So it is eleven others counting on us." She explained offer him her hand in agreement.
"Understood?" She questioned softly holding his gaze with her own.

"Trust me, there's a lot of history to dig up." Denryu's comment was a tad dry, his own eyes easily meeting Cassandra. He could at least agree that this was one bridge that he didn't wish to burn. Her analogy about rivers, though, earned a rare smirk from the General. "Oh, I know that well. Changing those rivers is a much more daunting task than it first seems."
She did raise an interesting concept, though. Improving Metal Drive's reputation? "You seem to have a good handle on that already. Between Gazi and Wolf you've secured a decent network on both sides... and though I'm hesitant to say its solid, our 'mutual relationship' with that cat has proven more-or-less helpful to us - hm?"
He noticed that hand... and her request. 'Equals'. At this point, Denryu really couldn't argue that point: though Cassandra was, at one point, just another 'bribe' that he was trying to get to look the other way, and at another an interesting addition to the team, Cassandra had proven strong enough to stick it through to the end. Even so much that Denryu would try and call her in a time of crisis.
"Fine." He raised his hand, giving Cassandra's a confident grip. "Considering how much you've given for the team, I'm glad to consider us equals. And heck, if the world's burning down... I can't really think of a better one to be with for it."

"You'll find I'm fairly fire retardant~" Cas quipped with a laugh, but returned the firm squeeze of his hand eyes glittering with a spark of amusement once so rarely seen that was slowly becoming more common in regards to himself. "Sides I've found it rather boring going it alone." She added only releasing his hand upon the sharp whistle of the tea kettle pausing to pour them both their preferred beverages into a set of mugs. Sliding the coffee to her companion as she grabbed the sugar and cream. Dropping two small spoonfuls of the white sweet powder into her own tea and stirring.
"I have a few plans in the works. Financially while we aren't as well off as we once were my investments are making bank and I have a project to aid the Dark Area that might endear a great deal of it's population towards Team Metal Drive. Better yet it gives Luminas the middle finger in the process without putting unwanted attention on us though it will likely mean meeting with the Deeplane Council." The Doctor explained blowing lightly upon the surface of her tea watching the steam curl off the hot liquid.
"They're one of the largest settlement along with Fragment Village, but are in more of a position to help us help them." She added laying out her reasoning. "I intend to once I get a large enough stock of Firebreak Lilly seeds introduce them to the plant as a goodwill present on our behalf. It's the easiest strain to spot and control once it's completed it's purpose though I think with a few more tests it may serve a far greater use medically."

"Heh. Like you can ever really be alone with those two television boxes following you around." Denryu returned Cassandra's quip with his own, feeling that hand slip out of his own as she moved to grab the drinks.
Coffee in hand, it was time to talk business! "Deeplane Council? That would be... the 'Dark Area City' project, if I'm not mistaken?" He would give an affirming nod - if anything, putting a good foot forward on a brand new city might be the best chance they could get.
But using the Firebreak seeds? "Hm... so your idea is to use that plant to clean up the area before the more dangerous D-Reaper agents could even take root in the first place? Not a bad idea, but I would run a control test before handing them out. Its not like they've really been tested in such a high-corruption environment." The last thing they wanted to do was create a bigger problem.
His brow perked at that last point, though. "Medicinal purposes?"

"Well what would life be without my looming protectors." Cassandra quipped with a wry fond smile in regards to her team.
"I intend to get some soil samples from a few of the areas we're intending to seed and run a control test. You are right that the last thing we want to do is bring about yet another possibly bigger issue." The Doctor agreed as she sipped her tea pleased that Denryu did not appear against the idea of reaching out to the Deeplane Council. Between Tenebrous and Deeplane it would give them a start on rebuilding their reputation. At his inquiry of the plants medicinal uses Cas nearly beamed.
"I've been working on a project for some time to prevent second hand D-virus infection. Something that a patient could be given or take that would make them temporarily non-infectious and slow down the spread of the D-virus in their system." Cas explained pulling up the documents she'd been working on onto her D-terminal and turning her arm to show Denryu. Allowing the General time to browse them.
"I've been missing one or two components however I believe with proper processing a few of the chemicals and methods these plants use to neutralize, combat, and absorb the D-virus could be used to complete my work. If so then Doctors could safely handle D-virus patients within the time frame the drug provides without risk to themselves or allow their companions to safely transport them to a Doctor." She elaborated clearly excited for the medical possibilities the plant posed.
"I think in the long run if we succeed in stopping the D-reaper it can likewise possibly be used to treat severe exposure to corruption. Maybe even help heal some of the damages the R-reaper leaves on data." Cas added with a soft hopeful sigh though the idea of a future without the looming threat of the D-reaper was difficult for her to picture.

"Should be a decent start, at least... though even getting soil from the Dark Area isn't exactly a benign task."
With a half-shrug, he'd listen to the rest of Cassandra's plan - and she really had quite a few thoughts for the Firebreak Lily. Absorbing the D-Virus, curbing the corruption, and even medicinal use. It seemed possible, but at the same time, potentially unstable. "Hm. It might stop it from appearing, but I don't think a bush is going to stop a Paratice Head or something of the like. We'll still need common-sense defensive measures. That's what the Red Cards are for, anyway."
That aside, it was a decent enough idea, something that Denryu really couldn't comment on with his own skillset. But, perhaps fortunately, Angel would turn the corner. "And in here's the kitchen - oh, that's where you ran off to."
Angel held the door open, the Reppamon briefly stepping in, once more giving a nod to their two hosts. "What, you need us for something?" Briefly standing up from the table, he took a couple of apples from the counter on the table, passing them over to the fox.
"Not really. Holy-boy here's catching on quick enough."
"Heh..." With a single chuckle, he'd shake his head. "Dealt with all kinds in my line of work. Though I never expected the ambition here to be so 'grand'. This always been here below Terminus?"

"I doubt anything short of a digital bazooka could stop a Paratice head." Cas added with a laugh though there wasn't much humor to the gesture. "No these will just remove a potential food source from the Reaper. Slowing it down and buying the Dark Area hopefully more time. I'm afraid that's all we can really do at the moment." Cassandra admitted pausing as she glanced between Angel and the Newcomer with mild curiosity, but did not bother to rise from her seat nor abandon her tea. Instead she observed Guru with softly glowing eyes deciding to allow the Digimon to be the first one to approach.
"Tenebrous the city above us is a new addition though I suspect this base has been here for sometime from what files I've managed to recover. Unfortunately Breach doesn't have the best grasp of time due to his incarceration." The Doctor murmured taking another slow sip of her tea before reaching out to snag a clementine from the counter for herself.
