Lunch on the Hills (Bezil)

"Aaaaahh, what a beautiful day out today," Shoutmon exclaimed as he stretched his arms. He and Adrian had just teleported to the Digital World, since it was Adrian's day off of both school and work. The two of them decided to just have a nice picnic today, just a chance to relax and take in the true beauty of the Digital World.
"You did bring all the food, right?" Shoutmon asked. Adrian rolled his eyes; of course Shoutmon would ask something like that.
"Yes I did, Shoutmon," Adrian said as he layed down the red-and-white squared picnic blanket onto the grass before looking into the wicker picnic basket. "Don't worry, your six peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are in here. Still amazing how you can even eat this much food."
"Digimon have fast metabolisms, I can't help it," Shoutmon laughed as he shrugged. "So what do you want to do until lunchtime, anyways?"
"For now I just wanna relax," Adrian said, "Just a nice chance to observe the various Digimon. They really are amazing creatures, and I really want to just look at them. In fact I may even bring Jitsuko here. Just... anything to get my mind off of DATS."
"Yeah, makes sense." Shoutmon yawned and layed his back against the grass. "I wish your world was this warm all the time. I hate winter."
"Heh, same here."

Bezil the Gumdramon was beginning to broaden his horizons a little now that he had grown up, close to evolving. The furred purple and white dragon digimon, usually seen at his father Owen's side, was now more interested in finding a place for himself in the digital world. No longer was he the youngest digimon in his family, he now had two younger sisters. That meant he had to learn how to be a good big brother to them. And a good big brother needed to know things. And what better way to learn? Adventure of course! Bezil had headed west out of the Forest today, seeking out the Mainframe Hills for exploring. He had been this way a few times, usually on Owen's back as he flew over them, or aboard a Trailmon. The hills were magnificent, gently sloping, yet enormous all the same. As Bezil stood upon the peak of one of these hills, he let out a low "Wow..." at what he saw, which seemed to be the entire digital world. He could see the Backup Bayou to the south; the forest to the East, the mountains to the North, and Terminus City and the Network Plains to the West. The Gumdramon took a moment to rest here, it was a hard hike up. He was carrying a well provisioned pack on his back after all, with enough food, water, tools and emergency equipment to last him three days. In fact, when he told his father that he wanted to go hiking here, Owen was pleased. So Bezil did his best to use his lessons to do well here. Soon after his rest, Bezil noticed something red on the hill opposite. Curious, he took out a pair of binoculars that he had packed in the bag and peered through them. There he saw a Shoutmon and a human. He quickly identified the human as Adrian, and it seemed they were setting up a picnic! Excited to go meet them, Bezil packed the binoculars back in his bag and made his way down the hill toward them, crossing the little creek at the bottom of the valley, then once again climbed up to meet them. "G'day there!" he called out as he approached. "Didn't think I'd spot you guys out this way!" he smiled, wondering what they would make of him out here alone, with Owen back in Rosewood.

Happy from the nice quiet space that they had chosen, Adrian began to rest his eyes for a few seconds. So much had happened to him and Shoutmon in the past few months that this was really all he needed. Finals were coming up as well, so he had been studying for them as well. All in all, just a nice nap would be-
"Oh shit!" Adrian gasped as he shot back up, not expecting any other voices besides Shoutmon's to be heard. Gripping his chest, the human took a few deep breaths before calming down. He looked around to where that voice came from and immediately saw who it was. "Bezil? Oh thank god, you nearly gave me a heart attack. How've you been?"
Shoutmon had noticed the new voice being heard, and he lifted his head up to see who else but Bezil talking to them. "Oh! Heya, Bezil!" It took a little bit, but he finally realized that something - or someone - was missing. "You're on your own today or something?"

"Ah... sorry, didn't mean to surprise you" Bezil apologized as he approached. He made his way to the edge of the picnic rug, taking a few breaths to get it back to normal, then grinned. "I've been going great thanks! I've learned a lot in Rosewood so far, so, dad and I agreed it's about time I go on my own adventures when I get the chance!"He turned to Shoutmon. "Yeah, that's right. I'm pretty much strong enough to be able to cope without dad I reckon" he said. "Besides, dad's gotta look after my twin sisters for now, he can't exist just for my sake" he chuckled. Bezil noted that they seemed to be settling down for lunch. "Ah, just putting it out there, but, can I please join you for lunch?" he asked, realizing it would be impolite to set foot on the picnic rug unless he was invited to.

"Oh no, it's fine," Adrian laughs, "I do it to my mom a lot of the time, and I don't even try to do it. Now I know how she feels whenever I do it. Besides, I admittedly have thing on my mind. A.. LOT... of things."
"Come on, just tell him, he's old enough to know this kind of thing now I reckon," Shoutmon tells his partner, before Bezil mentioned his 'twin sisters.' Tensing up, they both turned their heads towards Bezil.
"Owen had even more kids?!" At this point he'll have even more kids than bunnies do!
The two of them weren't expecting anyone to join them for lunch, but it would still be nice to have company. Besides, Bezil was a good Digimon, and he definitely had some of Owen's genes with him. "Yeah, no problem, Bezil! I'm sure Shoutmon can give up one of his SIX peanut butter and jelly sandwiches."
"...gah, fine," Shoutmon pouted. At least it would just be one sandwich he'd be giving up.
Now that everything was set up, Shoutmon continued to explain what he was going to say earlier. "Things are not so great in the human world right now, Bezil. A group called DATS is going to round up all the Digimon and send them back to the Digital World. They're closing the border, and going to treat all Digimon there like criminals."
"And the worst part is that I don't know if they can even be stopped. They have more impact than even the 7/71st Recon or AEGIS. I can't lose the best thing that's ever happened to me."

Bezil tilted his head a little at Adrian's words. "You have a mom? Ah... that's right, you humans have a mom and a dad" he chuckled a little at this realization. "Dad told me a little about that, don't worry, I won't ask any more about how that works, I know it's usually uncomfortable for you guys".Bezil then blinked at Adrian and Shoutmon's reaction to him having more siblings. "Ah... yeah, was a bit of a surprise to us too, but, it happened, and I have little sisters now and I feel so happy about that!" Bezil admitted. The furred Gumdramon was delighted when they gave him permission to join them to share their food. That was another lesson Owen had taught him - never trust a digimon until they share their food with you. Of course he had little doubt that individuals like Adrian or Shoutmon would do that, but having it confirmed made him lower his guard completely for now, and he gladly accepted one of the sandwiches. "Aw thanks so much!" he said, munching on the sandwich he was granted. Yep, that was the stuff. Bread, salt, peanut oil, sugary fruit jelly, oh man was it good. It wasn't long before Bezil ate the whole lot that he was given. As that was done, Bezil listened to Shoutmon and Adrian as they explained about what was happening at the moment in the human world. It wasn't long before his yellow eyes widened with horror. "W-what?! Really? That's not fair..." Bezil replied, visibly upset. "Loads of good digimon want to visit or live on Earth, do they... are they really gonna displace them all?" the young digimon wasn't sure what to make of this information, but he sure as hell wasn't happy with it. Maybe his dad would better know what to do with it? "So... what's gonna happen next?" Bezil asked, not knowing what else to say here.

"Yeah, every human has a mom at some point," Adrian explained to Bezil. "Some humans have two moms or two dads, like you have. It's kinda complicated, so I won't explain it for now. Thankfully she doesn't have a problem with Digimon, so you might get to meet her someday."
The partner pair were still getting over the fact that Owen's family kept on multiplying. "Next time you see Owen, tell him that he seriously needs to calm down on the kid-having," Shoutmon said. "There's only so many kids that someone can handle."
Adrian was surprised when Bezil took that peanut butter and jelly sandwich right out of the picnic basket and ate it in a total of ten seconds. "It... wasn't lunch time yet, Bezil," Adrian said as he sweatdropped.
"Oh! Does that mean that I can-"
"No it doesn't."
"Aw mon," Shoutmon groaned, lowering his head in disappointment.
Bezil was reasonably upset when he was told about DATS, just like Adrian, Shoutmon and the other Tamers were. "They are, Bezil. Every last one of them."
"They claimed to give us 'amnesty' since we helped them stop these two Digimon who put a control spire in Shibuya. Next time they see us, they're gonna take me away. Adrian can't abandon his home though, so we don't really know what to do."
"We don't want to involve you in this Bezil. They mean business, they're nothing like the 7/71st. If they feel like they have to, they will kill. This is the human world's fight, not the digital world's."

"Huh, that's cool" Bezil said, surprised to hear that a human's mother was fine with digimon. Although he hadn't met any so far, so, he supposed that wasn't much of a surprise. Bezil snickered at Shoutmon's worries over how many siblings he was getting. "Well, I'm not complaining, dad only needs to look after us until we're strong enough to take care of ourselves, and I love all my brothers and sisters" he said, a little smugly and proudly. He then took the sandwich when he thought he was being offered it, then blinked as he realized they hadn't even started yet. "Heh... oops, sorry about that, guess I was a little bit hungry" the Gumdramon said, scratching the fur on the back of his head a little awkwardly. "Well, I brought some food too, so I can share some with you too if you want" he took a bag from his back and revealed some of the rations that he had brought along for this trip. The rations were neatly packed and stored in the bag as Owen had taught him to do, clearly labelled and dated. A lesson that any son of a soldier should know is to be prepared for anything, and having adequate food for one's travels should be a given. First food that should be eaten should be perishables - things that rot easily. And so Bezil revealed a pack of pork chops that he was prepared to share with them, freshly brought this morning. "So how about it? I can cook 'em on my tail if you want" the Gumdramon offered. He could heat the hammer up like a hot plate if he chose to do so. This talk of DATS was something of a problem though. Bezil pondered what to do, sitting down on the grass. "Well, neither dad or I have ever been to Earth, well, for very long anyway, so, I guess we'll stay here for now..." he mused. "But this is serious for humans like you, Adrian. They can't just send digimon away if they don't want to, that's not right".
While Bezil couldn't solve something like DATS right away, he could at least solve something else. "But, regardless, humans are welcome to stay in Rosewood if things get a bit too rough there" he said.

"Still, tell your dad to calm down on the hand holding with your other dad," Shoutmon says, winking at Bezil with a grin on his face.
"Two dads... oh geez, I can just imagine how much that'd potentially suck," Adrian says in a joking manner, "with double the amount of dad jokes. I would rather pick a fight with a BlackWarGreymon than listen to a dad joke."
"...no, you wouldn't."
Bezil apologized for eating the sandwich so early and fast, which didn't bother Adrian too much as he wasn't that big of a stickler about that kind of thing. They still had plenty of food, so he could just share more with him later. However he was surprised to learn that Bezil did indeed have food with him, which made sense considering the size of the backpack he was wearing. Not only that, but the food was labeled and dated as well. "Oh wow, did Owen teach you how to do that? He's quite a survivalist."
"And to think the first time we met Owen, he completely fell down a valley in the Backup Bayou, I will continue to bring that up because that is the first best impression ever!"
At this point, Bezil got out some porkchops and offered to share them, saying he could cook them on his tail. Shoutmon of course was fine with this, but since Adrian was a human and not a Digimon, the idea of food being cooked on a tail was... not appetizing at all. "Uh, I have plenty of food with me so I don't need a pork chop."
"I'll take one! More food is always a good thing," Shoutmon says, drooling a bit as he rubbed his belly for emphasis. "Maybe before lunch we can spar a bit? Red told me about your fight with him and I wanna see how strong you really are."
And now it was back to the DATS talk. Bezil expressed how he thought that sending Digimon away by force was wrong. "They're doing it out of fear. On New Years, two Digimon invaded Earth and managed to set up a control spire there. If we and a bunch of others weren't around, many people would have died, and even then our group was having a tough time defeating them. But I'll be sure to let others know about Rosewood, assuming DATS doesn't somehow find out about it."

"Well, I'll try, but, they both seem to enjoy it a lot, and who am I to butt in on them like that?" Bezil asked, grinning. It was really none of his business how much his parents liked each other. In fact, that was a reason why he was out here by himself, to seek his path in life outside of his family. Adrian then mentioned dad jokes, which shattered Bezil's dignity much more effectively. "Oh my god..." the Gumdramon fell to his knees in despair. "You don't know pain until one of your parents cracks an awful joke, then you turn to your other parent for some sanctuary, and then they double down on it, aaargh, god it's so freaking painful!"Still, the double dad jokes were a price that Bezil was willing to pay for being a part of his delightful family. And that brought them to the next part of their conversation, Bezil beamed at Adrian's praise, standing back up. "Yep! Dad's motto is always come prepared, so, prepare what you're gonna eat on long journeys". First to go would be the fresh meat, then the fresh fruit, then an assortment of other food groups according to their preservation properties. "Dad's unit was the 7/71st Recon, so he'd have to spend several weeks without resupply at times, so he teaches us a lot about how to survive the longest".It was clear that even though he was old enough to be without his father, Bezil still was proud of being related to him, and especially so with all the lessons Owen had given him. Bezil chuckled at the mention that Owen was once pretty clumsy. In fact he was still so, but, he had been improving these past few months. Especially when he seemed to find new life in teaching younger digimon how to get by in the world. It seemed Adrian was a little confused by what Bezil meant by cooking by tail. "Ah, right. Well, I have a technique called Pyro Wave, where my tail burns with fire and I send a wave of heat to my foes. Basically, dad taught me a way where I can control that and just retain the heat, so I can use my tail as something of a stonegrill, if you've heard of something like that" he grinned. Basically it meant that the Gumdramon could turn his tail into a hotplate to cook food. Very convenient for an aspiring adventurer. But first, Shoutmon offered the request of a spar. To this, Bezil grinned with delight. "Of course! I'm ready if you are" he said, eager to rise up to the challenge. The last bit of explanation about Neo-DATS slightly washed off Bezil a little bit. It didn't concern him in any way other than the welfare of the kind humans he had become friends with. So he'd be happy to try out the spar before bothering about all those problems.

Bezil acted like dad jokes were his kryptonite, then shared the horrors of the double dad jokes. The way he described it, he imagined Bezil as a ping pong ball, and Owen and Hikaru each as the paddles. The image of that was both funny and horrifying. Luckily, Shoutmon spoke up to try and ease Bezil. "Well if the jokes become just a bit too much for ya, you can always contact us on Tamernet."
Then the furred Gumdramon continued to talk highly of Owen, saying how his motto was to always be prepared, and with the way Bezil packed and sorted his food, Adrian believed it. "I don't think I'd be able to survive for weeks on end in the wilderness. I'm a modern human, so I'm more accustomed to technology and civilization." Although Adrian had been thinking about if he actually did have to survive a week or two alone one day...
Back to the cooking tail thing, Bezil actually explained that it was basically a toned-down version of one of his moves, "Pyro Wave," meaning his tail was practically a grill. "One day I'm going to wake up from this absurd dream," Adrian jokes. "I learn a super weird thing about Digimon or the Digital World each day."
Alright, now was the time for Shoutmon to see how strong Bezil truly was. He led Bezil to an open space in the fields a few feet away, enough space for Adrian to watch without being harmed. After they both got into position and warmed up, Shoutmon was now ready to begin.
"Alright, kid. I'm not like Red, the other Shoutmon, so don't think the tricks you used will work as well on me," Shoutmon warned. "Now come on... hit me with your best shot."

"Heh, alrighty, I'll send something through on tamernet if they've made me cringe bad enough" Bezil answered Shoutmon. Adrian said that as a modern human, he'd struggle to live like that. Bezil understood that. Most humans that came to the digital world seemed to be from cities and metropolises that were not greatly skilled with things in the wild. Indeed one of the few humans he had met that seemed to understand what it was like to live off the land was the young Tetsu, who Owen had introduced him to a little while back. Still, this was the digital world, and comfort wasn't as easy to find as it was on Earth. "Maybe you could pop by Rosewood sometimes? Dad's a teacher there, he educates other digimon about survival skills. I don't think he'd mind a human joining in" the Gumdramon suggested. Bezil grinned at Adrian's comment about how weird digimon were. "Heh, well, that's us digimon, we think of all kinds of ways we can use our powers" he explained. Then came the time for the spar. With this, Bezil steeled himself. He remembered that he had in fact lost against Red, the other Shoutmon being very savvy and tough on the battlefield, and the cards that were used were decisive, once they had agreed to incorporate them. But, today, he was determined not to lose again. Shoutmon invited him to make the first hit, and so Bezil did so, initially beginning to rush forward. His aim was to make Shoutmon prepare for a hammer blow from his tail, but, before he made contact, his tail suddenly turned a light blue, and an icy mist rose from it. "Frosty Tail!" Bezil cried, and sent a wave of freezing air at Shoutmon directly. If it hit, it would weaken whatever limb it hit. Bezil was glad that he had inherited this technique from Hikaru's data. Bezil opens the fight by using Frosty Tail on Shoutmon.
Frosty Tail - Bezil sweeps his tail in an arc, sending blade of freezing wind that would damage the enemy and deal extra damage if the enemy moved the affected part for two turns. [Cooldown: 2 turns]

Adrian hadn't truly considered taking any classes on wilderness survival until Bezil brought it up. As he thought more on it, Adrian decided that it wouldn't be so bad to do so. Besides he'd get to see Owen again, which was always a delight for him and Shoutmon. "Hm... I might consider it, Bezil. It's always a good time visiting your family."
Bezil proceeded to comment that Digimon always find weird and unique ways to use their powers, and Adrian had to agree. "Yeah, I can see that. Almost makes me wish I had superpowers of my own that I can just have fun with."
Alright, now it was time for the spar. When it was commenced, Adrian decided that cards would be considered cheating in a for fun kind of fight, so he just sat back from a safe distance to watch the fight. I've seen Bezil fight before, and he's pretty strong. Shoutmon has his work cut out for him, I bet. Pretty risky fight to place bets on.
Despite the strength of his opponent, Shoutmon was not backing down. He saw Bezil charge right up to him, noticing how his tail suddenly turned blue. That must've been his Frosty Tail move that he used to put out that fire back in Rosewood.
Nope, I don't want any of that. At the last second, Shoutmon thankfully managed to dodge the tail-swinging attack, immediately preparing his counter-attack. Let's try fighting ice with its natural enemy...
"FIERY FASTBALL!" Shoutmon cried, chucking a freshly-made note-shaped fireball right at Bezil. Shoutmon dodges 'Frosty Tail'. Shoutmon uses "Fiery Fastball" on Bezil.

Bezil made a 'tch' noise of frustration as his attack missed, but it was expected. At a range, that gave the opponent time to react to attacks, so what would he do instead? Go in close of course. His dad had trained him well in ranged and melee combat, and Bezil might be young, but combat training was his favorite class, and he wasn't going to go and start a losing streak against Shoutmons. In fact, Bezil thought of an idea that he had learned from the other Shoutmon. He could reflect attacks straight back at others, so, what if Bezil were to do the same here? Before the fastball would hit, the Gumdramon would spring into the air over the fireball, then send his tail hammer swinging along behind it, gently so as to not make it explode, then, he guided it behind his back, over his head and... straight back at Shoutmon!"Hah! How's that?!" Bezil shouted, assuming a competitive combat stance, watching to see how his opponent responded. Bezil sends the Fiery Fastball straight back at Shoutmon.

One of the first rules of combat, from Shoutmon's experiences, is to always expect that anything can happen, whether it be your opponent pulling off some kind of weird move or someone coming in out of nowhere. And even if the unexpected does happen, you need to be ready for it. Shoutmon retained these lessons from his past life as Omni, although even he can screw up on one of those two things.
Therefore, Shoutmon was not expecting the attack to be reflected back to him, at least not with as much ease as Bezil demonstrated. However, he was semi-prepared for it, blocking half of the attack with his staff. Sadly it wasn't fully blocked, as it exploded and caused minor damage for Shoutmon, making him stumble back a bit from the impact. And what did the red dragon do after he was partially hit?
He started laughing. "Hahaha! You really are good, Bezil! I usually expect anything to happen in a fight, but I never expected that!"
I see the element of surprise will play a pretty big part in this battle, Shoutmon thought. My attacks are different from Red's, but Bezil's clearly had plenty of training. I'll need to get into his head somehow...
"But take it from me, kid..." Shoutmon said, before immediately swinging his mic from left to right, positioned right below Bezil's legs, deliberately trying to make him trip. "Always expect the unexpected." Shoutmon is partially hit by 'Fiery Fastball', taking some damage.
Shoutmon attempts to trip Bezil, and make him vulnerable.
