The news spread like wildfire to the other Tamers and Digimon in Shibuya. It is very hard to hide something like what happened in Shibuya that night, where two giant Digimon came out of nowhere and built the control spire. No one died, but buildings were destroyed and a new team was reintroduced: the Digital Accident Tactics Squad.
And thanks to Adrian's news about this new group, Rebecca has made up her mind: she was going to join them.
"White Wolf, I am not sure that this is a good idea," Gabumon said as he, Agumon and White Wolf, stood in the center of Scramble Crossing, Digimon not in holosuit forms at all. White Wolf would give out autographs to those that asked for them, and explain that the Digimon were only stuffed animals. "I mean, we're talking about betraying our friends, even Tadayoshi."
"I know that, Gabumon..." White Wolf sighed, "but DATS is right. Digimon don't have a place here. I mean, look at that building that had two stories completely taken out! We need to do this, guys,"
"Well, if you two are going along with it, then count me in as well," Agumon states, puffing his chest up with pride.
"Yeah, we're with you White Wolf," Gabumon said with a smile, causing White Wolf to smile back.
"Thanks, guys. Now we just need to see if an agent will show up."
It would be some time before an agent would show up. Mainly because the girl was standing in one of the busiest intersections in Tokyo with what was obviously an Agumon and a Gabumon. What the hell was this stupid girl doing? Was this some kind of trap?
She had been watched by a dark-haired woman wearing sunglasses and a professional kind of business suit. The woman was tall, and had an expression of distaste on her face. After a few minutes, she would reach into a pocket, remove a device, and whisper "Smell anyone else out there, Jiro?"
"No, Ma'am. Just the Agumon and Gabumon" came the reply.
"Alright. I'm going out there, get ready if they resist" she told the digimon in the digivice, then approached the girl with the digimon, walking up behind her, then cleared her throat.
"Just what the hell are you doing out here?" she asked. "Standing in the middle of the site of a recent digimon fight with your digimon is not a very good idea at all, young lady".
She would have ordinarily just called for backup and ordered her to be arrested, but there was something about this that didn't add up. Surely she knew that such a brazen act would get this kind of response? It was almost like she wanted to get caught. And this agent wanted to know why.
It would take a little while, but eventually White Wolf got what she had hoped for: a DATS agent, or what she assumed was such. Sure it was an unconventional and somewhat dangerous way, but how else would she even get into contact with DATS? She would explain all of this to the woman when she showed up asking what the hell she was even doing.
"Well I'm sorry that you're not exactly easy to contact, ma'am," White Wolf said as politely as she could as she sucked up Agumon and Gabumon into the V-Pet, "but I felt like you'd only respond to a Digimon out in the open."
And now White Wolf would be sharing the real reason why she did what she did. "I heard about DATS. How they want to basically separate the two worlds. And frankly... I agree with you guys. I love my Digimon, but they're too dangerous for this planet. And humans could potentially harm the Digimon more than they harm each other. I want to help DATS in any way I can. I know plenty of Digimon hiding out in the human world, so I can help you track them down and arrest them. And to show that I am willing to cooperate..."
Now here was the surprising part of this: White Wolf actually held out her Digivice and offered it to the woman, to prove that White Wolf wouldn't be an enemy. Now she was hoping that this DATS agent would pull some strings to have White Wolf be able to help them...
It was as the Agent suspected, this was a plan to draw them out. However, she would listen. If this was an ambush it would be a very poor place to hold it, but for now she folded her arms and listened, glad that the girl returned Agumon and Gabumon to her digivice.
She raised an eyebrow with interest at her story. That she agreed with them, now that was interesting. And of course logically sound, at least in her mind. 'Digimon don't belong here' had been what Commander Hashimoto had told her, and the woman agreed with him. If it wasn't for digimon...
No, she couldn't dwell on that for now. To her surprise, the girl then offered her digivice, with the digimon inside. Almost stunned, Agent Tiger accepted it, then gave a nod, understanding what a hard thing to do this was.
"Very well..." she began. "This is sufficient for now. Follow me back to DATS Headquarters, then we can talk in confidence. But I'm warning you, any funny business and you and your partners will be dealt with severely".
The Agent placed the digivice in her pocket, so shaken by how this encounter had gone that she placed it in the same pocket as her own, the screens facing toward each other. Jiro's face could be seen on her own, and he blinked at seeing Agumon and Gabumon.
"Hi there" the Dracomon-X said to them. "I'm Jiro. I understand that your tamer is going to our side? That's a smart move".
As Agent Tiger led Rebecca through central Shibuya toward the headquarters, she mulled over the possible motivations she might have. Does she think cooperating with DATS will mean they allow their own digimon to remain on Earth? Possible. If it was up to her then that would be allowed, but it was not. That was for the Commander and the Director to decide.
"Oh, you can call me Agent Tiger for now" she said, realizing she hadn't introduced herself. "What's your name?"
If this goes wrong, please forgive me, guys... White Wolf thought as the woman accepted her digivice. She was seriously hoping that this agent wouldn't just take her Digivice and run off with it, leaving White Wolf alone once again. Thankfully she took up onto her offer to side with DATS, telling White Wolf to follow her to their base... as well as give her a warning about pulling any funny business.
"Trust me, after this none of my friends are ever going to trust me again," White Wolf says, following the woman, "but one day I think they'll forgive me for it... hopefully." The agent then revealed her name to be Tiger, and asked White Wolf for her own name. "What a unique name! My name's White Wolf. You've heard of me, right?"
Inside the digivice, Agumon and Gabumon heard something begin to speak to them. "What the... who is that?" Agumon asked, not realizing that it was another Digimon speaking to them.
"I think it was the agent's Digimon partner, Agumon," Gabumon matter-of-factly told him, before speaking to 'Jiro'. "Hello there, Jiro. My name is Gabumon, and you've already met my idiot brother Agumon."
"Hey! I'm not an idiot!"
"You spent a whole day worried that Iki's fish would drown."
For the moment, given the expression on the girl's face as she surrendered her digivice, Agent Tiger accepted the motion as genuine. This was a lot to give up, and frankly, she wouldn't be able to do the same, not with Jiro.
The girl lamented that her friends were unlikely to trust her ever again. The dark haired woman made a sympathetic sigh. "I know, and I'm sorry that you'll go through that with your friends, but in the long run, and for humanity, you're making the right move" she assured her.
The DATS Agent would hide her expression as she thought more on that, what digimon meant to her personally. She did her best to not be noticed as she seemed to lament on more personal things than whatever social breakups this girl would be going through. But she did her best to suppress them as they proceeded through Central Shibuya, gathering little notice through the usual crowds.
"White Wolf? Hm. No, I haven't heard of you" Agent Tiger replied, frankly.
Meanwhile, in Agent Tiger's pocket, Jiro the Dracomon-X blinked at Agumon and Gabumon's antics. So they were two digimon, yet they didn't seem to get along with each other very well. Frankly he had sincere doubts that they'd be any use to DATS, at least compared with the other digimon he knew. They both seemed puerile and stupid, and entirely out of sync with the significance of what was going on here, with the girl surrendering them to the agent.
"You... do realize that if your partner's no use to us, you're both going back to the Village of Beginnings, right?" Jiro asked, sternly.
"It's fine, Tiger, really," White Wolf reassured the DATS agent, "I didn't have friends before I came into contact with Digimon anyways, so this won't be any different. At least I'll still have Agumon and Gabumon with me."
Saying that suddenly reminded White Wolf of something she wanted to say in the first place. "Also, when this is all over I don't expect to have my Digimon stay here. That really is unrealistic. Instead I'll be going to the Digital World with them, surely upsetting my family and some of my fans, but worth it in the end."
As the two of them walked, White Wolf noticed how Tiger's face was grim and stoic most of the time. She wondered if Tiger had anything on her mind... "Oh, you haven't?" she asked, responding to Tiger's statement, "I mainly do music videos and write songs, but I'm starting to get into acting as well... aaaand you probably don't care so I'll just shut up until we get there."
When Jiro told Agumon and Gabumon what would potentially happen, it was as if the Dracomon-X had flipped a switch in their brains. If they weren't in their digivices, the twins would be glaring right through Jiro right now. "You think we haven't talked about that?" Agumon asked.
"White Wolf will be a good use for DATS. And even if she isn't, she's coming back with us to the Digital World regardless. Call her useless again, and there will be consequences, Jiro." By the tone of Gabumon's voice, he meant business.
Agent Tiger was silent for a moment as "White Wolf" said that her plan after telling them her secrets was to escape to the digital world with her partners and remain there. This made her grind her teeth with disapproval. This girl was probably not even 18 years old and still she seemed to want to go down this path. The DATS agent stopped there and then, speaking at a tone that couldn't easily be overheard, but made clear that if they were alone that she would be shouting at her at this point.
"Have you told your parents about this?" she demanded to know. "Your family? Do they know you intend on travelling to another world and staying there? Do you know what they would feel about that? How much that would hurt them? Do you, White Wolf?!"
It was clear that Agent Tiger was somewhat angered by this line of conversation. So much that she wouldn't care to respond to such frivolry as White Wolf's career as an idol, like she would care about things like that.
Meanwhile, in Tiger's pocket, Jiro looked at his presumptive "companions" with a look of dislike. Frankly, the Dracomon-X thought they were both imbeciles at this point. Mainly because a moment ago they were bickering like petty toddlers, yet now they presumed to threaten him.
"Just remember whose pocket you're in" he replied. "Your partner won't be able to save you here. Speak with more respect". This was more advice than threat, but Jiro felt that the two digimon needed to remember just where the power was here.
As soon as Tiger mentioned the word "parents", White Wolf stopped walking. Her eyes were widened with shock as PTSD memories flooded right into her brain. She heard her parents screaming in her head...
"Iki! Get Rebecca out of here now!"
"Mom! Dad! I can't leave you! YOU CAN'T DIE HERE!"
White Wolf immediately became winded when those memories finally stopped, stumbling a bit as she grabbed her head. After recovering, she looked at Tiger right into the eyes. "My parents are dead because of Digimon. My best friend is dead because of Digimon. Every day I hear their screams in my head. Do you think I'd worry what left of my family I have after that? Of course my family knows what I'm doing. They agree that Digimon need to remain in the Digital World, and they're proud of me no matter what I do. If there is any way that I can prevent more people from dying, then I want to take that chance." There was no sense of malice or hate in her voice, but a more stoic tone than what she had been talking in before.
"I apologize, Jiro," Gabumon says from the Digivice, realizing that he had been mimicking Agumon's behavior, "We are just very protective of Rebecca, so we kind of get carried away. We mainly lived in the wild before we met her. I hope you and I can at least become allies in the future."
They stopped for the moment after Agent Tiger had said her piece, then as she looked to Rebecca, she saw something familiar. That expression... oh... had she gone through that pain too?
She listened in utter silence as she explained that digimon killed her parents. The DATS Agent gasped and stepped back a pace, looking mortified at the reality of what she had said. The young woman could say nothing for a minute or so, having to remove her sunglasses as they were fogging up from tears. She turned her face for a few more moments in an attempt to regain her composure, before she turned back to Rebecca, resigning to having to face her with rolling tears.
"I see" she said, giving a simple nod, using what seemed to be a long experience of this despair to hold her voice steady. "Then, in which case, I understand. Digimon killed my son too".
As she said that, Jiro gasped, astonished she would reveal that so easily. But there was something genuine they could feel from Rebecca. Even though as an Idol she would have been trained to tell stories that pierced the soul all in the name of acting, he trusted that his partner could identify this as genuine pain.
"I'm sorry, I didn't know" Jiro said to Gabumon and Agumon. If Rebecca knew of the pain that his partner felt, then, her attempts to join them were fully understood.
"Let's continue" Agent Tiger said, leading them closer to the DATS HQ, speaking considerably more gently now.
White Wolf did her best to fight back the tears as she told her story. Even though she was supposed to be this tough, confident idol, that was all a lie. But she still had to keep up the act for the DATS agent, even though it was hard to do so. However, Tiger seemed to have a similar reaction to the story, noticing that she seemed to be stepping back a couple paces. She even took off her sunglasses, and White Wolf saw the tears coming down her eyes.
White Wolf knew that look. Tiger lost someone as well.
Her theory was confirmed when Tiger said she understood White Wolf's reasons, before admitting that her son was killed by Digimon as well. "And that's why you joined... right? To get revenge for your son?" Just as Tiger understood her reasons for joining DATS, White Wolf understood Tiger's.
"Y-Yeah... yeah, let's just continue," White Wolf agreed, walking side by side with Tiger as they continued their path towards DATS HQ. Once this is all over, things will hopefully go back to normal around here...
Agent Tiger's tears persisted, but she did her best to make her voice remain firm. "Not for revenge..." she said firmly. "But... to make sure that no others go through the pain I went through".
Night after night, reports of more young children, some younger than her dead son, all of them ending up with digimon partners and somehow winding up in the digital world. Agent Tiger could not tolerate such a thing, every young tamer she would prevent making that leap, that was a good thing in her books.
As for how she felt with White Wolf here, well, she made the connection fairly quickly it seemed. She had felt the same pain she had felt, although to a lesser degree. To lose a son is worse than losing parents. Sons and daughters were meant to bury their parents, not the other way around. But for the sake of good conversation here, she wouldn't bring attention to that line of thinking for now.
Eventually, they would reach the entrance to DATS HQ. "Well, here we are..." Agent Tiger said before they would enter. "After we enter, I'm going to have to ask you to answer any question that's asked of you honestly and correctly. If you do so, we'll release you back to your life without disruption. If not... well, I'll just say that my superiors may not be as generous as I am."
"That's exactly what I want to, Tiger," White Wolf said, nodding a little bit. "No one should go through anything like you or I have gone through. And with DATS... we can be sure of that."
After a bit of walking, the two of them finally reached the entrance of the DATS HQ. Before they entered, Tiger turned to White Wolf to let her know that Tiger would be asking her questions that she must answer correctly and honestly. White Wolf was about to agree when she realized that her disguise meant that she wasn't being entirely honest. If she lied right to her boss... things would be bad.
"If... if we're supposed to be honest, then I should start by being honest with you," White Wolf said. She would then remove her silver wig, revealing a full head of black hair tied up in a ponytail. She would then also take off her mask, letting Tiger properly see her eyes. "My name is Rebecca Story. White Wolf... she's just a character I made so I can feel confident when on stage. You asked me to be honest, and this is it. I'd never tell just anyone this secret."
Is she taking off her disguise? The twins thought in the digivice as they listened in on the conversation.
Agent Tiger hated that she had shown such weakness so easily. She knew that she should have put up more of a resistance to this, but, alas, that was her weakness. The reason someone wanted to submit themselves for DATS for the same reason that she had? It just felt right to do.
But as long as it didn't endanger Jiro, then it would be acceptable to do.
The dark haired woman turned to White Wolf as she explained something further. She said her true name was Rebecca Story, and removed a wig. Only when they were safely secured within the headquarters did Tiger react to this.
"Ma'am, please do the same. It's honorable" Jiro requested through the digivice. Tiger sighed, then relented.
"Very well. But you are never to mention this name outside of here. My name is Nami Esaki. Mother of Kazuo Esaki, now deceased, age 12. Have you met him?"
Part of her wanted her to answer that she did, that another tamer knew of his last moments. If not, that would be fine, but, part of her wanted to just know what happened to her son in the digital world.
Rebecca did not see Tiger's actions as weakness, as the DATS agent would like to believe them to be. She identified them as being human reactions, things that made people human. She was touched to see that she did indeed care about other people.
She was taking a big risk, removing her wig and mask like that. At first she was planning on just being White Wolf when working with DATS, but Tiger had brought up a good point: she had to be honest. If she wasn't, everything that Rebecca was risking would be for nothing, and everything would come crashing down.
It surprised Rebecca when Tiger began to reveal her real name to her, which was Nami Esaki, and she said her son's name was Kazuo. The age of her child made Rebecca question some things. Was Kazuo a supposed Tamer as well? If he was then his supposed Digimon partner would've been able to at least protect him in some form.
Maybe he wasn't dead...?
There was too much speculation to go off of at the moment, so Rebecca decided to drop it. "Y-You didn't have to tell me, you know," Rebecca tried to say. "But I promise I won't tell anyone. And sadly, I never met anyone named Kazuo. I'm sure... I'm sure that he must've been an amazing son, though."
