Witches With Attitude (Solo Hunt)

Ravenna has kept herself busy since moving to Shibuya. Class, homework, practice, track, and to top it all off, battling evil monsters as a Spirit User. All while doing so in impractically revealing clothing. Now that summer is approaching, it might be time to drastically increase her sunscreen budget. Today, she is going on a journey in the Digital World to investigate a strange signal displayed on her D-Tector. If she is correct, this could be her fused spirit totem.
The track athlete has come all the way to the Grotto of Sorrow, in Ravenna's mind, a big, dark hole in the ground. Ravenna is nervous about entering the cavern, but has confidence in her abilities as a Spirit User. While in her Suzamon spirit form, she flies down to the entrance and walks inside. It isn't long until the light from outside cannot be seen, and it is pitch dark.
"I haven't been anywhere this dark since the power went out at that rave. I better spark a light."
Ravenna illuminates the area with a translucent violet flame coming from her hand. She continues down into the grotto, making her way through different twists and turns. The signal on her D-tector is getting stronger. Off in the distance, she sees a dark figure crawling along the ground. A shadow wolf dashes towards her and pounces on her, biting her on the arm. Suzamon swats in away and summons her psychic blade.
Fighting inside the cavern would not be easy. Raye's mobility is severely limited. It is difficult to maneuver with her large wings, and there isn't much room to fly in here. The beast goes for another strike, but Suzamon shields herself from the wolf's fangs with her blade. She directs its head to the side and kicks it in the chest, knocking it back. The beast circles around and strikes from the side, digging it's claws into the side of Suzamon's waist. The Psychic Spirit grabs the wolf by the fur and tosses it towards the wall. As the wolf is getting up, Suzamon strikes it in the head with her blade. Th beast disappears in a cloud of shadow energy.
"That was intense. I've never seen a creature like that before."
Two more shadow wolves emerge from down the path. Their fangs are dripping with the blood of a fresh kill.
"Oh great. There's two of them?!"

Ravenna prepares to fend off the fearsome shadow creatures. She grasps her psychic blade tightly and extends it to the side. The first wolf dashes towards her and leaps up. Raye blocks the fangs with her blade. The second wolf charges at her from a different direction, landing a strike to her leg with its sharp claws. Ravenna kicks it and backs up to create distance. The Spirit User would exchange blows with the wolves, both sides landing a few strikes.
Raye's wounds are starting to add up. She starts taking longer and deeper breaths as her heartrate increases. Suddenly a flash of light illuminates the cave. A bolt of lightning shoots towards one of the wolves and hits it, knocking it out. The remaining wolf looks over at his fallen packmate, only to be crushed by a small airborne boulder. Ravenna sighs in relief and catches her breath. She looks over to see who defeated the wolves. She sees the silhouette of a small cloaked figure with a wizard hat wielding a staff.
"Thanks for taking care of the wolves. Who are you?"
The figure steps closer and brightens the area with the glow of his staff. Ravenna sees a Terriermon with a long grey beard underneath the robes and hat. To her surprise, the Digimon speaks with a southern accent.
"The name's Tee Dubya. Y'all were fixing to become critter food. What's a pretty lady doing down here in these parts?"
"My name is Ravenna. I'm searching for a rare and powerful artifact."
"Ah, of course. Them's the only reason anyone ventures down here. Searching for hidden treasure."
"Do you know of any treasure in these caverns?"
"Yes ma'am. Though someone else already done get to it first. This area ain't just filled with critters. Follow me, I'll take ya to my superior."
TW turns and starts strolling down one of the paths. Ravenna isn't sure where the wizard is going, but it sounds better than roaming the caverns alone. TW must know the area. The Spirit User follows behind, careful to stay on alert for more shadow creatures.

Ravenna doesn't know much about these caverns, but TW seems to be trustworthy. The track athlete follows the short wizard deeper into the caves. Eventually they reach a large stone door. TW hobbles up to the door and taps it with his staff twice. Dust falls from the ceiling as the large door slowly opens up. Beyond the door is what appears to be a small underground city with structures carved out of the rocky terrain. Ravenna is surprised to see such life down here in the caverns.
"Oh, I wasn't expecting anything like this in the caverns."
"Yes Ma'am. My boss done built up a nice little town for her minions."
"Uh, minions?"
"I mean, employees."
That raised Raye's suspicions. What kind of boss has minions? Surely only the evil kind. TW motions for Ravenna to continue on, but she is hesitant to continue.
"What's the matter, girl? You think I would steer you wrong?"
"Just who is this boss of yours?"
"Why don't you meet her? Come on, I'll show you the way."
Who is TW's boss? The wizard isn't acting like his boss would pose a threat to Ravenna. Unfamiliar with the area, Ravenna figures it is best to stick with TW.
"Alright, but it better be safe. These caves creep me out."
Ravenna follow TW into the town and they approach a large gothic temple carved into the stone cavern walls. The gargoyles and skulls adorning the temple unsettle Raye.
"Your boss' decorator isn't very subtle."
"Ya, my boss is into that Halloween stuff. She keeps shooting down my idea to host a hoedown."
Ravenna and TW enter the temple and reach a large throne room. On the far side of the room is a woman dressed in black mage robes sitting on a throne made of dark stone, bones, and stacks of anime DVDs. Ravenna is shocked when she recognizes the woman on the throne. As the duo approaches, the woman rises up and extends her arms out to warmly welcome them.
"TW, you have returned! And you brought a guest."
"It's good to be back, boss. This here is Ravenna. She's some kind of bird human or sumthin'."
"I'm a Spirit User, and I know you from college. You are Rachel from my English class."
"Oh, you're in my class? Wait, I recognize you. Oh ya, Ravenna, the track star. Tough break in the playoffs."
"We were completive, but the other team just did better than us that day."
"Ya, you really should have practiced more. I heard the team looked sluggish. Did you have a large breakfast or something?"
(Thinking) "Well, that was rude."
Rachel takes a few steps down and smiles with dead eyes at Ravenna. Rachel has long hair as dark as night and big thick glasses. Ravenna smiles awkwardly as there is an uncomfortably long pause.
"Well, fancy running into you here. Oh, and I don't go by Rachel in the Digital World. Here, I am Mistress Berlinmon."
"Really? Rac- I mean, Lady Berlinmon, TW mentioned that you have several, employees."
"Yes, yes yes. I have built up a small dark army to control these caverns. I have plundered a great deal of treasure, but there is still more to be found."
Lady Berlinmon struts over to a large chest shaped like a casket and opens the lid. She takes out a large staff and shows it off to Ravenna, twirling it in the air.
"This is the Staff of Morrigan. With it, I have powers that even most Digimon would be envious of."
It's all starting to make sense to Raye. Some nerdy girl from college has a magic stick that gives her power, and she is using said power to plunder treasure and capture territory. Ravenna's D-Tector starts vibrating, but Ravenna is distracted by TW.
"Ya see that nice staff, there? I'm a big staff aficionado, and that is some dang good staff right there."
"Yes, it looks nice."
"Let's cut the small talk and get down to business. So are you interested in joining my army? It would be nice to have another Human around. Hey, you wouldn't happen to have this week's homework with you, would you? I just need to borrow it for a few minutes to take some notes."
"Army? Homework? Uh, I didn't pack any of my school supplies. About your army-"
"Wait! Don't make a decision yet. It's almost time to eat."
Lady Berlinmon points the staff towards the wall and fires a blast of toxic energy from the staff. The sound from the blast echoes off the temple walls and throughout the underground town.
"It's dinner time! Get the food ready!"
Lord Berlinmon marches off to the kitchen to lecture the cooks. Ravenna is left standing there next to TW scratching her head.
"Uh, okay then."
"I just know you'll take to this town like a fox in a chicken nugget factory."
Ravenna found herself in an interesting position. Where there is treasure, there is money to be made. Though, Lady Berlinmon is very bossy, rude, and annoying. Was it worth sticking around if it meant putting up with such a bitch? Is this character designed to be a bad person? Do they represent someone in the real world with these negative personality traits? Well, yes, and yes. This is why you don't piss off writers.
*Shirou barges into the narrator's room.*
"What the hell are you doing breaking the fourth wall without me?"
I was just explaining how the Rachel/Lady Berlinmon is a bad person and is inescapably based off of someone that the writer knows. Someone they never want to see again.
"Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose? You're not being subtle at all. You might as well be waving around a big sign that says, "Hey, I'm throwing shade at this asshole." If you just come out and say that someone is a jerk, that's not being sneaky."
Alright, sorry for spoiling the surprise. I just wanted to drive home the fact that this person is annoying, bossy, and rude. Rachel is an effective strawman to showcase negative personality traits. I'm sure that nothing bad will happen to this character.

Dinner would prove to be most unpleasant. Not that Ravenna was expecting a good meal in these caverns. It wasn't that the food was bad, but rather Berlinmon's obnoxious behavior. It was clear to all expect her that her minions were terrified of displeasing her, and they all begrudgingly accepted the way she treated them. After Ravenna spent most of the dinner controlling her rage as Berlinmon dominates the conversation, Ravenna's mind was made up. Even if sucking up to Berlinmon might be profitable, there is no way Raye is going to stick around here and placate this woman's ego.
"...And then there's my Royal Prats fanfic. I shipped the characters with manic pixie dream girls from anime. Here, look at these photos."
Lady Berlinmon starts shoving her phone in the faces of the others at the table.
"That's very interestin', Lady Berlinmon. They look so cute."
Lady Berlinmon shoves her phone in Ravenna's face while she is eating. Ravenna mumbles something under her breath.
"You're a manic pixie dream girl."
"What was that?"
"I said, YOU are a manic pixie dream girl. Among other things."
"Wow! Just wow. Okay, let me explain to you how things work around here. You do not disrespect the top dog."
"Well, you got the dog part right. I'm sick of hearing you explain things. How about I explain some social etiquette? You do not get to control the conversation just because you have a little bit of power."
"G'yeh, you,"
"Oh, now you are at a loss for words? Finally! Has it been a long time since anyone's stood up to you?"
"You will not treat me like this! How improper?!"
Lady Berlinmon slams her hands down on the table and stands up.
"Aah! L-Lady B-Berlinmon! Perhaps y'all can settle down, now. Dang it, Ravenna. Why'd ya question her authority?"
"How dare you bring somebody like this into my base, TW?! Guards, escort these two to the dungeon at once!"
"Ah haa haha. Do you hear yourself talk? Let me guess, you've always been an awkward girl, and you find a magic staff that grants you authority over others, so you act all bossy and judgmental?"
"Like you are one to talk. You're the one always blowing up over everything and running your mouth. You think I don't hear what people at college say about you? You are going to die alone and bitter."
Two Digimon guards wearing black leather armor approach Ravenna and TW brandishing polearms. TW raises his hands up and shakes in his seat.
"Easy, now. I don't want any trouble, ya hear?"
"That's what you get for associating with trash. Guards, seize them!"
Ravenna grabs her D-Tector and becomes illuminated in violet light as she Spirit evolves to her beast spirit form Fayemon. Her black wings stretch out, almost reaching the ceiling. With a flap of her wings, she creates a large gust that sends the guards flying against the wall and blows the food off of the table. Her wings start to glow, and a murder of crows come flying out and swarm all over. Lady Berlinmon freaks out and makes a disturbed expression. Berlinmon grabs the Staff of Morrigan and swings it, emitting a green poison mist that burns one of Fayemon's wings.
"I'll show you what happens to those who challenge my authority! Especially jock-sniffers like you!"
"Go take a shower, your hair looks terrible."
"The nerve!"
Fayemon jumps up and struggles to hover in midair given the ceiling. She latches on to the dining table with the talons on her feet and launches it at Berlinmon. The table hits its target and crashes into the wall. Suddenly the table is split in two with a powerful strike from the staff. Berlinmon adjusts her glasses and poses with the staff. The crows start dive-bombing the witch, but she neutralizes them with blasts from the staff.
"You really think that you can stand up to Digimon just because you have a magic staff?"
"Do not underestimate me."
Berlinmon waves the staff and draws TW close to her with a magic pull attack. She grabs TW by the cloak and holds the Staff of Morrigan up to his throat.
"Stand down, or I will kill TW."
Fayemon is startled. She doesn't want to see the wizard hurt.
"You bitch. You would really use one of your own allies as a hostage? TW did nothing wrong, except placate your ego."
"Argh! Ravenna! You've gotta stop her."
"Enough! Hand over your device."
Ravenna powers down to her human form and slowly approaches Berlinmon. As she motions to hand her the D-tector, one of her crows sneaks up on Berlinmon and pecks her butt. Berlinmon lets out a gasp in surprise. Ravenna quickly grabs the staff and pries it out of the hands of the much weaker woman. TW scampers off and hides in the corner.
"I'll be taking this. Yoink!"
A bolt of violet energy spirals around Ravenna's arm. The power in the staff reacts to Ravenna's D-tector. A black glyph appears below Ravenna and a wave of energy wraps around her like a tornado. Ravenna appears in her fused spirit form, Sabrimon. Clad in revealing black and purple bird-themed armor with two giant wings, the crow girl feels more power than ever before. Ravenna points the Staff of Morrigan at Berlinmon.
"Lady Berlinmon, I am Sabrimon, and I will not take your BS."
"No, stop! Please, have mercy."
Berlinmon collapses to her knees and begs for her life. Sabrimon stares down at the fellow student with a dark glare.
"You'll find no mercy here. I am done letting anyone walk all over me."
Sabrimon throws the Staff of Morrigan at Berlinmon. The staff pierces her through the forehead and sticks into the ground. TW watches on, mortified by what he has seen.
"Ravenna, you killed her. She begged for mercy, and you still killed her."
Sabrimon's eyes dart towards the wizard.
"You will be next if you don't listen to me. I'm calling the shots now. Round up all of the best loot this waste of flesh has stockpiled and bring it to the surface."
Powerless against the fused spirit, the Terriermon wizard complies. Without a boss, the rest of the minions follow Sabrimon's orders. Ravenna has the loot brought to the surface to resell at a later time in the Digital World. The most important loot was the Staff of Morrigan. It contained Ravenna's fused spirit, and with it came tremendous magical power. What she didn't know is that the staff corrupts the user. Ravenna was never the same after that night. It didn't create this new sinister persona, it merely unlocked what was already inside Ravenna. Where would Ravenna's new powers take her? The world was about to find out.
