Seeking the Source [Cas - Mission Set-Up]

"Yes I mean to bait him in. Either he is still working towards his goal and is willing to take the risk and fall into out trap or he no longer cares and won't respond. Either way we'll have some form of answer." Cas spoke crossing her hands loosely behind her back as she tilted her head to smile, all sharp teeth and mischecious spark over her shoulder at Vigilant. Though her amusement didn't last. Guttering out like a flame as she turned back to the code.
"I've had a theory about why the Reaper is the way it is for a long time, but with the lack of documentation from that time it's almost impossible to confirm," The Doctor mourned with a sigh.
"I think...when Dr. Lee Senior created the code it was just that. Harmless code, but when introduced to the digital world it took on a spark all it's own. It was harmless at first, but when the Reaper began to go beyond the bounds the Doctor set for it...he panicked. Tried to contain and destroy it inciting fledgling instincts of self-defense and preservation. It's Creator hurt it. Tried to destroy it. So it reacted in the only way it knew how." She murmured trailing off into silence for a long moment before she shrugged.
"It's only a theory of course, but many humans would say that Digimon are simply the sum of zero's and ones, but we know differently. Humans are the sum of chemicals and atoms and yet you could dump everything that makes up us into a beaker, but that wouldn't make it a person." Cas intoned before shifting her gaze back to Emma.
"Would you like me to message his board as Reaper-X? Or do you want to show your hand in this? Trust me I'm not more pleased to find out I'm somehow the result of the worlds most fucked up digital family lineage and the third generation of Doctor working on this then you are realizing we've been carrying a dead man's torch."

"Doctor, with all due respect, you sound... menacingly pleased to 'trap' someone who would help with our cause against the D-Reaper." Vigilant gave a nervous chuckle to Cassandra's smile, as Emma waved off the tone, the pair looking back to the code as well.
As for Cassandra's theory, Emma gave a short nod. "I'm not going to pretend to understand biology - that's closer to your field, not mine - but as a sentient program that might make sense. Based on those plants you've been looking into, we already know that the D-Reaper can both adapt and take on peaceful forms if it has no reason to act." If it could evolve to be a non-violent, seeding, invasive plant, then surely it could also evolve back to violence. "Now that I think about it, the D-Reaper's actions in the desert were entirely reactionary. Until things got out of control, there were a few Digimon peacefully interacting with its agents."
Theories aside, Cassandra pushed for action. "Mm? Sure, go ahead." Emma was already set up to a VPN, and with a setting or two added to put in the filter, she stood up, offering her chair to the doctor. "Just don't expect an ongoing conversation - put everything you want to say out at once. Who knows how long its going to be until we get a response."

"I'm certain should the situation be reversed he would be as equally thrilled. Call it scientific enthusiasm if you must." Cassandra quipped waving off Vigilant's concern not unlike his Mistress though she did cast the Knightmon a softer, less predatory smile.
"The D-reaper was never intended to do harm, but like immune disease that doesn't mean good intentions cannot go awry. I...well I both hate and understand my fore-bearer even if it's difficult." The Doctor explained with a loose shrug her earlier cheer fading a bit to solemn and thoughtful contemplation. Then with a shake of her head as if to clear away the cobwebs of her various thoughts the Cas cracked her knuckles and nodded.
"Right. Let's get his attention then shall we?" She spoke with a wry smile as with a nod of thanks she settled into Emma's chair.
Reaper-X: I am the one responsible for the recent changes you've seen in the fight against the Reaper and more. If you still wish to right your Father's wrongs, still long to save the Digital World, then I will be awaiting your response...Uncle.

"Oh I'm sure I can call it something..."
Past that, Vigilant really didn't have a comment, the holosuited Digimon simply giving a nod to the doctor. Emma gave the doctor a small glance as she called the D-Reaper her 'fore-bearer' of all things, returning that thought with a shrug. "You could hardly call that the case now, though... but yes. Let's get his attention."
And it wouldn't take long for that message to be sent, posted right on top of that message board straight out of the early 90s. Naturally, there wasn't an immediate response, and at least for the next several minutes, the screen would stay un-moving. "I'll send you the link to give a response if we see any updates. For now..." Sitting in front of that test console, Emma started clicking through a few files, seeing how this early version of the D-Reaper affected this poor, unprotected copy of Windows 98.
"I'm starting to get an idea of how he managed to code this, but I'm still wondering how he tested the parameters. Let's see... basic programs still work, and I still have Word, but its cleared out about half of the font types-"
She clicked a few keys on the keyboard, seeing it default to green text, bold-faced Wingdings at 18 font.
"... Never mind."

Cassandra would arch a brow at the Knightmon, but left him alone to his comments while she worked. He certainly wasn't the first to be unnerved by her and she doubted he would be the last. Steeling herself she took a slow breath releasing it as she forced the tension in her shoulders to relax and vacated the chair so that Emma could return to her own task at hand. Eyeing the Hacker's work for a long quiet moment before letting out a soft chuckle.
"Well that explains why the Reaper Agents talk in Wingdings. I can actually read this garbled mess if you need me too." The Doctor offered even as she mused on this new information, half amused, half resigned to the strangeness.
"I understand why he created the D-Reaper. Without it to heal the world the digital world would have ripped itself apart and been destroyed a long time ago. The Sovereigns were a stop gap one that I suppose had they completed their transference would have prevented all this, but with the corrosive nature of the Dark Area..." Cas trailed off into silence with a shrug.

"Oh, trust me, it's not saying anything other than what I type into it. It's just unfortunate that this is turning into less of a proper case study and more of me torturing old electronics."
Still, that didn't mean that there wasn't nothing to be learned from this escapade - all it meant was that Emma didn't exactly know how to go about it yet. She did share a chuckle with Cassandra, though, as the hacker pulled open a DOS window to play around with the disc itself.
"I'm not going to say if it was unnecessary or not - honestly, I don't know enough about the old Digital World to make that kind of call. It could have turned out that way, or maybe it already had its own fail-safe and the D-Reaper subverted the program's intended path to another result. If that's the case - or if the D-Reaper was the correct answer in either circumstance - is not something I can really make a call on." That was Emma's view as a computer expert, anyway - though at those trailing words, a 'ping' game from the other desktop, Vigilant giving a blink at the screen.
"... Seriously? What was that, fifteen minutes - does this guy just live on this site?" The Knightmon sighed, as Emma provided more insight.
"More likely he just put a notification on it to ping him if it was ever updated. What's it say?"
"Um... let's see..."
Admin: Oh, someone's still banging at this old door? Interesting... coordinates follow.
"... And then its listing something around the edges of the Dark Area. Weird, though, its not near any landmarks or even a Trailmon Station."
"Interesting... someone trying to fly under the radar wouldn't take it that far. Does he mean to show us a direct example of something?"

"True there could have already been an unknown system in place, but there's a part of me that hopes it's creation wasn't entirely in vain or else it makes all this," She gestured towards the old electronics and the screen running the D-reaper program in general, "such a waste." The Doctor explained with a sigh before the 'ping' garnered her attention.
"Or it's a trap." Cas stated voice flat though the quick response did indeed get an eyebrow raise. Prompting the ex-tamer to turn to her own D-terminal to pull up what info she knew of that area of the Dark Area. Unfortunately given it's insignificance. Not much.
"Though he could be giving us his current coordinates, but that's unlikely. I suppose the question is...do we go see for ourselves or send a scout?" She questioned with a tilt of her head as she glanced towards Emma seeking her opinion.

"Well, I did say 'Old Digital World' data." Emma gave a small smirk, starting to run a few simple commands to see just what was happening on the fringes of the system. "Using Sakkakumon more-or-less allows me to re-write the basic data in my 'area', which means I can see a few layers deeper into code than most other Digimon. If that failsafe ever existed, it's no longer there."
"... Or, at the very least, its not transferable inside your space. Emma, it's a stretch to say that technique is even part of the Digital World."
"Semantics. It's similar enough." Emma's retort more-or-less brought an end to that conversation, especially with the 'Admin' giving the lead. Cassandra was cautious as she ever was, and Emma was already looking into the source code on the page.
"If it's a trap, its a trap that's been set up since the 90s. The IP of the newest post matches close-enough to the original ID of the site - he's using a new computer, but hasn't changed his access point all that much. I'm not seeing any signs of tampering either." So it was likely legit?
The doctor's next point was a bit more interesting. And Emma considered it for a moment: "... I'll do you one better. I'll scam the mission board to make a full deal out of it."

The idea of making it a mission was...tempting. Among a sea of other faces she herself would be hard to pick out as Reaper-X if the man even thought she'd show up in person at all. Allowing her to observe unobtrusively.
"All right," Cas agreed after a long moment of silent thought, "But just as a diplomatic investigation of sorts," The Doctor added glancing back down at the crisp text on the screen and the Admin message that still blinked back at her.
"I may be calloused enough to use whatever fucked up connection we have to further our fight against the D-reaper if that is what's needed to save the digital world, but..." And the Baalmon tucked her chin lower into her scarf as she let the wild locks of her hair fall around her face obscuring it in shadow except for the crimson glint of her eyes. Reaper eyes, ever staring out of her digital prison.
"I don't want him hurt."

"The least I can do is give you some cover. As for the topic..."
'Diplomatic Investigation', in the middle of the Dark Area? This might take a draft or two, and it would definitely involve calling at least one favor to head the investigation. In the midst of her thinking, what caught Emma off-guard was Cassandra's sudden declaration.
'She didn't want him hurt'.
"... Honestly, it was not my intent to try and start a fight if we can avoid it. But if push becomes shove, we might not honestly have a choice." The spirit wielder considered the facts for a moment.
"He's a tamer, or at least an equivalent, whose survived in the Digital World for several years, and he seems to be able to make this sort of invitation with little hesitation or planning. On top of that, we don't have the faintest clue of what he can pull off."
Emma gave a 'tsk' between her teeth. She didn't like any bit of this, but it was about the only lead they had.
"I'll take care of setting it up, and I'll make sure that the mission operator has enough red cards to go around. That's about as much support as I can provide... like this."
The wielder cursed herself again, under her breath, as Vigilant gave a sigh. "Emma..."

"I know. . ." Cas sighed out with a shake of her head even as she lifted her hand to rake her fingers through her hair disheveling the already wild locks beyond even their previous disarray in her frustration. "I know," She repeated softly the weight of her own time fighting the D-reaper weighing heavily on her words.
"If it comes to it I'll deal with him myself. I don't want any kids bloodying their hands, but I don't..." The Doctor trailed off a soft inhuman noise rising from the back of her throat that could only be described as pain.
"Is it wrong of me to w̸̯̯̹͇̓͑̐̌̄̒̑̓̀̈́͜a̷̗̦͗͜n̵̝̦̑̌̇̈́̔̏̉́ṭ̴̡̢̢̡̥̘̜̲͠ͅ to be selfish just this once? To want to meet him?" Cas asked in a whisper, her voice gruff with emotion she couldn't even begin to articulate. Her Father was dead. Her Mother was dead. She was dead. The man who had made the thing that had spawned her was dead. She would likely in the process of stopping the D-reaper kill it in all, but name. Rip whatever sentience it had developed from it's self, reducing it back to the harmless linchen it once was if it meant saving the world. Dissecting it's data like digital vivisection if that was what was needed. Peeling back layer after layer like she had the Hunter and the thought alone turned her stomach and left her cold.
She couldn't ask the D-reaper why. It wouldn't answer. Lacked the capacity to answer in words that they both could understand. The sovereigns where not all knowing gods. Their words held no truths for her only the mercy of the one that had seen fit to take pity on her. She'd died for the digital world. Would die for it again and again and again if it meant saving Mikemon, Denryu, Team Metal Drive. If it meant saving the patch work strange family she'd made. She'd die till there wasn't a shred of her data left to return if that's what it took. She would give everything. Had given everything. The weight of the crest around her neck as heavy as stone.
Was it wrong to want to meet the man who'd suffered as much as she had in this fight? To look him in the eyes face to face and hope to see some of herself reflected there?
"I've been working on compressing the D-Dialysis machine to be more mobile, but I don't think it will be ready in time. However, before I died one of the things I was working on was a paste using those plants I brought back. They burn the D-virus on contact. While unpleasant I was testing applying them directly to an infected wound to cleanse as much of the infected injury as possible. It's not 'pleasant,' but any edge against infection is useful." Cas admitted ripping her mind away from the dark spiral her own thoughts had been devolving into and throwing herself into the routine of her work. Her thoughts carefully skirting over the ragged edges of what had to be done to focus on what needed to be prepared.

"..."
For a while, Emma didn't answer, but she listened. Even as she typed, her ears were open to the doctor, absorbing every word that she had to say, even as the hacker continued to link the thoughts in her head and spin together her scheme. She considered everything: font type, paper quality, dialect, everything that would make this seem as legitimate a request as possible.
As desperate as Cassandra's request was, all Emma could do was put forward her very best. And, eventually, she found the words to say:
"There's nothing wrong with being selfish."
The sound of her heavy typing filled the room.
"... When my brother and I first arrived into the Digital World, honestly, I was scared out of my wits. Unlike Japan, London doesn't have an easily accessible portal to-and-from this place, and where we landed wasn't exactly the most kind to humans. But my brother just met it head-first like anything else, even managing to make friends with a feral Devidramon in less than a week. When we finally made our way out, the only thing he wanted to do was go back, to invest himself in this 'wonderful world we found'."
Honestly, Emma wasn't exactly sure why she dove into this story in the first place - but knew where she was at the end. "If this 'Admin' is as dedicated as he seems, he might be a lot like Oliver. He's invested his whole life to seeing it through to the end... anyway. Let me know how this looks."
Pushing back away from the screen, she would let Cassandra review her image, with a nice, empty line for that familiar Wizardmon to sign.
"No intended violence. Just a dedicated group wanting to see this through to the end."

"I didn't believe in the Digital World. Not so far in it being real.I fully believed it was real, but I didn't believe I had any place in it. Magical lands, destined partners, things like that were things that happened to other people." Cas admittedly softly as she read over the request with a critical eye, but found no flaw.
"I've always had terrible timing. I wish I'd met Denryu and you so much earlier. I wish I hadn't gotten my partners so late. I wish I hadn't gone to the sea-side that day." She spoke voice barely a whisper.
"But then I suppose I wouldn't be me." Cas murmured as she straightened reaching out to give Emma's shoulder a gentle squeeze in thanks.
"Mikemon tells me the same thing at times. That it's ok to be a little selfish, but it comes more naturally to him then myself. It's~" And she trailed off with a playful grimace, "More a learned skill for me."

"Trust me, I was right along with you for that phase." Emma gave a chuckle, sharing a silent nod as Cassandra okayed Emma's draft. She went through it once or twice more herself, patiently listening to the rest of Cassandra's outpouring.
Though, she couldn't help but smirk at a certain point. "I doubt you would have even met Denryu if not for what had happened. Whatever that 'other' Cassandra would have been doing, I don't know." And maybe things would have been different on this end. Maybe Metal Drive would not have been bold enough to go after the statue - or maybe the events in the forest would have gone the other way.
It was all speculation. Giving a nod to the screen, Emma would both make a printout and load the document to a USB, handing them both out to the disguised Knightmon. "Plant this. You know what to do."
"Understood." Dropping his disguise, he took both items in hand - and as Emma opened a portal, the Knightmon stepped right on through, leaving Emma alone with Cassandra on this side.
"Well, the cat's definitely got a bit of 'greed' going on with him, one way or another, so he knows how to treat himself. Honestly, being selfish is the most natural thing for him."

Cassandra couldn't help the soft surprised bark of laughter that spilled from her lips like water at Emma's comment in regards to her adopted brother. A rueful grin stealing over her face as she flashed a fanged smile at her friend. "You are certainly not wrong, but then again I'm told I'm a glutton for punishment." She quipped with a chuckle deciding to let 'what-could-have-beens' lie.
"We wouldn't be us without our flaws. Though with luck we'll be able to close this chapter on the D-reaper soon." Cas murmured her before her grin turned mischievous. "Then all I'll have to concentrate on is whatever scheme your brother is up to at the time."
