CHAPTER III: BACK AT HOME
Episode 3: We fight together! A bittersweet birthday part, the Deeplane City Council and its leader!
It didn't matter how bad things might look. That spark of light inside of her couldn't die. No matter what. A part of Katherine tried to grasp onto these thoughts to keep going. Three days have passed since that Tuesday night where she appeared in Amy's bedroom. Far from even trying to explain how that happened, the teenager had tried to keep all of those absolutely terrifying events off her head while she could. By this point, it was likely she was out of tears to cry. She had cried too much during the first night. After listening to the whole story, her host was the first to suggest she should stay there until she felt ready to leave. The fact that Katherine had taken that offer without hesitating showed how absolutely terrified she was of being alone with Jazz right now. It was not until Thursday where, accompanied by Amy, she ventured into her apartment to look for clean clothes and her sleeping bag. She wasn't ready to go back. The sole thought of being in there by herself terrified her. The police seemed to be investigating the events that had occurred that Tuesday night during the blackout. Of course, whether it was for the pitch black darkness or the blinding light, no one was aware digimon were the one who has caused that mess at the warehouse. Jazz had woken up on Wednesday afternoon, she had felt exhausted during the first days. Katherine was no digimon medical expert, but it looked like the Lopmon had been a blow away from losing her life. Although some ointments had been applied to help, digimon seemed to heal their wounds by themselves. And it seemed like they did in much less time than humans. By Friday, although her body hurt, Jazz's external wounds had healed and she was able to walk with no trouble. Just like Katherine's, her spirit seemed to be broken. The differences between the human and her partner seemed to be long gone, but their problems were different now. They were both scared, they were both frustrated. Now and then they tried to talk about happier topics, trying to cheer themselves up. Whenever they had healed, the moment to talk about what was next for them would come. How was living with Amelie, then? The blue-eyed had not allowed Katherine to sleep on the couch and, since Katherine couldn't allow herself to take the bed away from her friend, they slept together until Katherine got her sleeping bag. Other than that, they got along perfectly. Katherine was so grateful for Amelie and Ooi (who actually lived with Amy!) taking them in that she did everything she could to avoid bothering them. She didn't feel like speaking much either, after all. At the moment, it was clear they were safe. Luke obviously had no interest in looking for them now that they didn't have the gems. So they shouldn't be facing any enemies for now. The question remained... would they ever be ready to jump back into action? It was Saturday, and Katherine felt she was ready to talk. Jazz, however, was sleeping, so the human went out for a walk and to get some coffee. Sitting at a coffee shop, she just stared by the window, listening to music and letting everything sink in. Once she was done, it had started raining, and it was almost noon. She put on a light blue sweater and headed back to the apartment. She went up in the elevator and opened up the door. She had actually forgotten what day it was.

The last several days had been a rollercoaster of emotions for Amelie.
What could she say? Ever since Katherine had randomly appeared on her apartment on that Tuesday, the unease of the atmosphere was palpable; even the most basic of interactions felt strained, even though those had been carried with her usual demeanor, despite how Jazz's and Katherine's spirit had taken the greatest hit the brunette had witnessed.
It was depressing, and frustrating as well. How the two had managed to remain tight-lipped about what had gotten them in such bad shape was frustrating, and had resulted in a very concerned friend. Luckily—or unluckily, maybe? They had eventually spoken; the resulting tale was harrowing. How, in a single night, two digimon had gotten to the human world and had targetted the same person in a single night was terrifying. Were the so-called 'Zoid Gems' that important?
How the two had almost gotten killed for them did a good job at answering that question, all things considered. The sequelae of that event had no doubt left a scar on both her friends' psyche, and that both saddened and angered Amy. Despite the fact that she hadn't met the Valkyrimon responsible for this in person, she would make sure he would pay dearly for doing this to her friend. That much was a promise.
What happened on the following days was a slow journey of recovery. At least on her mind, the two began to slowly recover from the shock of that episode, even if it would probably take a while for them to return to their old selves; was that even possible? Considering how traumatic that had been, doubting that was reasonable. The path of recovery would be slow, but any progress was better than none. Of course, the two were free to stay in her place for as long as they wanted. Even if Amelie's apartment wasn't a big deal, she would offer all the needed hospitality until Katherine felt better; just as much as fitting for the situation.
Eventually. Saturday had arrived. How did they feel about it? Did Curls even remember that today was supposed to be her birthday? It wasn't something that mattered, all things considered. She would get her party, even if it didn't want it! Considering that she almost didn't live to see her birthday, Amy guessed that celebrating being alive for yet another year was a fitting way to continue their journey.
At first, when the dark-haired girl opened the apartment's door, she would find pure blackness ahead of her. Could it be that the apartment was deserted? At least initially, it seemed like it! It would take her turning the lights on to see her friend smiling and the place to be decorated for the occasion, even if on a bit of an austere note. The most notable features the living room had at the moment were the cake, the glasses and the bottle resting by the table. All the ingredients to get the celebration started!
"Happy birthday, Curls!" She chimed in, a happy smile on her face. Where were Jazz and Ooi? For now, those questions remained unanswered, even probably not for long! It didn't take long for her to close to distance and tightly hug her friend. "Why don't you have a seat? The party's about to begin!"
Maybe 'party' was an overstatement, but that didn't mean the brunette would allow for her friend to remain in a slump on this kind of day! With any luck, everyone else would collaborate on it!
After all, who doesn't like having fun?

It was likely Katherine had miscalculated the time it was. The apartment seemed a lot darker than usual and, while it was true it was rainy outside, the lack of any type of natural light made clear it was definitely past noon. Using her index finger, she turned on the lights. With them, her countenance lightened up too. After a couple of seconds, the startled expression that had appeared on her face made way for a smile. It was definitely not as big as her usual grin would be upon seeing something like this, but it was definitely the most she had smiled during these days.
Her brain went through what was going on, trying to look for an explanation. It was right when she tried to think on what day it was that she realized she had actually forgotten her own birthday. It was Saturday, November 6. Of course, this was quickly confirmed by her best friend chiming in a ‘happy birthday’. Katherine returned that hug, wrapping her arms around the much taller girl. She had needed a lot of those during these days.
Now... was it just her imagination or had Amelie gained some weight?
“T-Thank you.” She managed. “W-When did you…? H-How…?” She wasn’t quite able to issue logical sentences right now, she was still a bit shocked! Did she say party?
“Where is Jazz?” She asked while the hug came to an end.
“Happy birthday!” Welp, another surprise. Jazz had come out of Amelie’s blue sweater, her arms extended and jumping towards her partner, wrapping them around her neck. Considering Katherine let go a squeal this time, it was safe to say that had been a bit more shocking than the first surprise. How didn’t she notice that? Of course, Amelie hadn’t gained any weight.
After coming back from the shock, the teenager extended her arms to hold the bunny. She was smiling, for the first time in a while, too. “What were you doing in there?” Shifting her green eyes back to her human friend, Katherine could only wonder.
“Shisei was my bait! Like the Trojan Horse!” The Lopmon was also hugging her tamer tightly. She had learned one thing or two from human literature since she was in this world, so that reference wasn’t surprising. Undying curiosity at its peak.
“Well, you really got me.” The girl let out a sigh. A question still remained in the air. “Where is Ooi?” Was another surprise waiting for her? Considering how Ooi was, this could be something that threatened the health of her heart. “Please no more surprises.”
Katherine walked towards the table, glaring around the semi-decorated room. “You did all of this? You really didn’t have to…” It was true what they said: you really don’t know what to say when someone throws you a surprise party. Then, her eyes went to the chair. Why did she have to take a seat if a party was about to begin? She decided to trust her friend anyway and decided to move the chair to sit down. It wasn't like she had been to any party before, so she didn't know what was the procedure. Then, her eyes caught sight of the bottle over the table.
“Is that… alcohol?”
Flashbacks of drunk Amelie came to her. She stiffed a quiet laugh behind her hand.

Good thing that Katherine was appreciative of the surprise. All of Amy's hard work seemed to pay off on that instant! It wasn't quite as warm as she had hoped, but more or less as she had expected. Just things as they were.
The hug persisted for a couple of seconds more than necessary, but that was just how the brunette felt about it. In a sense, it was some kind of miracle that both the girl and Jazz were still alive. An expression halfway between a smile and a smirk adorned her face while her friend stared in shock and began to mutter half-sentences. Would she ever get anywhere?
Apparently, that could only happen when Jazz was involved. Was she aware of the poorly hidden surprise under the brunette's sweater? It looked like she wasn't! The reaction to it was pretty entertaining, all things considered. It would've been nice if Amelie had really gained some weight, anyway. She looked a bit too thin.
She stared at the exchange with a small smile, even if soon enough, another question would be directed on her way. A pretty interesting question, all things considered. For a second, the girl adopted a thinking posture.
"Where is Ooi?" She repeated slowly, almost as if she didn't understand the question. "I have no idea. Where might she be?" Whether that sentence was truthful or she was playing dumb, it seemed that for now, she would remain tight-lipped.
Eventually, everyone present went towards the table, picking their seats and making themselves comfortable. And just to find herself in the receiving end of Curls' gratitude! For now, however, she just waved dismissively at it, a nonchalant expression in her face. "No need to be shy about the whole deal. I enjoyed decorating this place for a change. Gotta admit that it's pretty dull otherwise."
For better or worse, nobody could deny that statement being true. Good thing that wasn't what the party was about, though! Soon enough, Amy began to pour herself a glass. "Of course it is. No party is complete with it, right?" And, after a small pause, she added. "Guess the two of you are drinking tonight. We'll have lots of fun!"
What would they say? They were definitely off to an interesting start, that was for sure!

It was a bit hard to detect if Amy was speaking ironically or if she actually didn’t know where Ooi was. In the end, she concluded the taller girl was aware of the whereabouts of the shorter girl, just was deliberately refraining from saying it. Why? That would be interesting to discover. Or maybe she really didn’t know where the raven-haired was. It was a shame in both cases, though. Ooi was a fun girl, and one of the members of Katherine’s very small circle of friends.
“I think you did a good job.” Katherine nodded.
“I helped!” Jazz raised both of her arms and ears. She didn’t. Not that much, at least. But she tried, okay?
“Well, thank you. Both of you.” Could she get another hug? Probably not now. Time to sit down.
Somehow, it was adorable Amy kept calling this a party, although it was only two girls and a digimon drinking and… wait, did she say the two of them are drinking!?
“W—Wait! Jazz can’t drink.” Katherine waved a hand in front of her, a bit flustered. “She’s a child… right?” She quirked an eyebrow, turning towards her partner. Jazz had jumped off her shoulder and was standing over the back of her own chair, only to be at their height.
“Hey! That’s not fair! You didn’t let me taste alcohol during the celebration back in Liquid’s hut either!” The Lopmon puffed her cheeks. It seemed like, for a minute or two, she had forgotten about what had happened and was focusing on this silly topic of conversation only. And that was great. “I am very curious to know how alcohol tastes like.”
Katherine wrinkled her mouth, looking at the bottle and then looking at Amy. “What do you think?” She asked. “What kind of liquor is that, even?” She had no clue of what human alcohol could do to a digimon. Although Garmore seemed to drink digimon alcohol without any trouble.
The Spaniard poured herself a glass too and stared at it before drinking.

Of course Amelie knew about Ooi's whereabouts. It could've very well deemed as magic, but the truth was that the two girls were unbelievable close. One had to wonder if there was something else there, but in all honesty, what could be? They were just two humans, living human lives together as definitely just friends.
Patting Jazz in the head, the brunette nodded. "Yup. Jazz was instrumental for the apartment's enhancement. We wouldn't be here if it weren't for her help."
All things considered, the two females had definitely enjoyed themselves while preparing this small surprise, and it seemed like Katherine enjoyed it as well. Saying the effort had been worth it would've been fitting, if there truly had been an effort. For her friend, it just seemed like the right to do.
Idealist, much? Maybe, but that was just how she felt. Breaking off her reverie, she gazed at Jazz momentarily, just for her eyes to focus on Katherine right away. "Why wouldn't she be able to drink? I think she's old enough; and if not, you can always evolve her to her adult level, right? That should do the trick."
For some reason, that almost sounded like an argument the devil's advocate would make. But then again... that was pretty much Amy's designated role, wasn't it? In any case, the bottle came to view, and its details could be appreciated once everyone drew closer. Bright red liquid was being poured as the glasses were passed.
"Don't worry too much about it. It's daiquiri, so it should be pretty light. Don't want to get drunk so early into the night, right? Especially not with all the surprises I have planned!"
She took a generous, yet brief sip before marching into the kitchen and bringing two trays with various types of snacks. From sandwiches to chips, you name it; the selection was varied enough to please most people. Once back, the brunette took a handful of Japanese peanuts and began eating them.
"So, any plans for this new cycle? A new year means a fresh face, and one step closer to the ultimate goal of any young adult!" It was pretty clear that her tone was sarcastic by now. "You should be on your way to college fairly soon, or are you thinking about working first?"
Probably not the most relaxing topic. Or was it? Time to find out.

Jealousy.
Upon hearing Amy’s statement about the apartment, Katherine’s mouth wrinkled. They had been sharing some time together by themselves, haven’t they? Well… It had all been for her but… Ugh. She couldn’t help it. She felt a bit jealous. And… maybe a bit was an understatement.
So, evolving Jazz to adult level would make her able to drink? That didn’t sound exactly illogical, but it felt like cheating. Jazz wasn’t ready to be evolved again, not after what had happened, anyway.
A sigh escaped Katherine. “I should have known you would totally approve of this.” Well, not much to do now. Jazz was going to drink.
Those green eyes just blinked twice while she stared at Amy. “So… early?” So they wanted to get drunk later on? “W-Wait, I have only drunk once too, and it was something that I’m not even sure had alcohol back in Liquid’s hut. I don’t know if I’m ready for this either.” The Spaniard sounded a bit nervous. However, she did want to see what those surprises were, so she would have to go along with this.
She did, however, have a contingency. “Please let me know when I should stop so I don’t get drunk or anything.” Maybe it was something hard to measure, though?
Katherine’s eyes drifted to the couch at the western side of the living room. For some reason, sitting around the table didn’t seem like the best place to leisurely chat for her. Maybe they should move to the couch so they could be more… relaxed? She decided to say nothing for now. Maybe Amelie needed them at the table for one of her surprises.
Jazz quickly went for one of those sandwiches, while Katherine decided to refrain from eating anything right now. It was a good thing to see the Lopmon had her appetite in place.
“Yes… I…” Katherine idly placed her index finger over her lower lip to then take a sip of her daiquiri. It was… good enough, she guessed? It was sweet but it had a strong taste. She had trouble to drink too much of it at once. She kept quiet, thinking. Usually, this was a question she didn’t have too much trouble dealing with before. But now she had a batch of mixed feelings inside of her.
“I originally wanted to study fashion design. Like… months ago.” It hadn’t actually been months, right? Only in the Digital World, after all. Her eyes went to Jazz for a second, and then back to Amy. “Since I got to meet the Digital World and digimon, I had thought about doing something related to it. Like… maybe actually living there and dedicating my life to digimon and their world.” Did this sound like insanity? As some might say, that didn’t really matter right now, because the recent events had made her question almost everything, including future goals.
“But… now that all of this happened…” She lowered her gaze, unable to complete her sentence.
How was she going to make a living in the Digital World when her actions there had almost ultimately costed them their lives, just some days ago?

An eyebrow was quirked at Katherine's strange gesture. Was any of her words misplaced? While that wasn't something that Amelie could fully understand, she opted to leave it like that. Insisting on something that the younger girl wasn't expressing on the day of her birthday would be unbecoming of a gracious hostess.
Instead, she focused on the comments regarding the morality of Jazz drinking. Of course, her stance regarding that quandary was more than clear. "If she wants to do it, let her; the result is not going to be a bad one, I promise." Would that serve as enough reassurance for the dark-haired girl? Prooobably not, but there was no foul in trying.
And, honestly. How bad it could be? Jazz didn't seem like the type that would be violent while drunk, and that much was a relief in considering they were in a small apartment in the Human World. The police not getting involved was probably among Amy's priorities, at least for this night!
What could she say? It would be an incredibly dull affair without at least two of them ending up drunk. Dismissively, she waved a hand at Katherine's concerns. "Don't worry; you're pretty much with an expert with the field! Sides, I can bet that you wanted to start drinking at some point, right? I doubt that you're going to get a better chance than this one if you want to do that; with your best friend, and in an environment where you can experiment with what want, and free to ask any questions you might have. Ain't that great? I'd almost say that qualifies as yet another birthday present!"
A crystal-clear show of the brunette's massive ego, but wasn't her overconfidence something that had been showcased over and over again? It probably wasn't the moment for that, however. "And, don't worry! I'll make sure you don't get smashed. I'm very good at taking care of others, remember?" Despite the low-key teasing tone of her voice, Amelie meant each word she said. Maybe Katherine would get just a little bit drunk, but that'd be a complete accident!
Understanding what was the situation at hand right away, Amy made an effort and moved all the apparel towards the coffee table that was surrounded by the couches in the living room. It was true, though; chances were that they'd be more comfortable there. Once done, she plopped in the nearest empty space she could find.
Hands idly went towards one of the sandwiches, her tongue quick to recognize the trademark saltiness of the cured ham. What could Amy say; it was very good! While munching on her food and taking the occasional drink, the girl listened raptly to her friend's dreams and projects; she knew about at least a small extent of them, yet a small frown found its way towards her face as soon as the comments regarding how those dreams had been dashed by that fateful night. Not good, and that probably was an understatement.
How would Amy face that statement? She was the type that always faced her problems head-on until they were fixed, yet... this one obviously felt extremely different. How to tackle this one...?
After cleaning her hand with a napkin, the brunette reached for Katherine's own. After squeezing tightly, she began to speak. "I think that's a very noble goal." The young woman said, smiling sincerely at her friend's dreams. "I can't say that I have all the answers and say which one of the two worlds would give anyone the best chance at a fulfilling life, but there's no doubt that the Digital World has a lot of potential. It's definitely an amazing world, and I can really say that I wouldn't mind living there if it eventually came to that."
That wasn't everything she had to say, though. One step at a time, right? "I've been working on something there as well, you know? It's a small project of mine, but I've been pouring a lot of effort into it!" Hiding her excitement was obviously hard on the face of that, to be honest! "Basically, I'm building my own city in the Dark Area, because I think that every digimon has the right to live in a somewhat civilized place, and... that continent really isn't. Whether that'll turn into my permanent residence or not in the future, that I don't know yet, though."
But... enough of self-advertising; the was something way more important than that to address. Amy's expression became a lot more serious before she continued. "I can tell you firsthand how, no matter the world, there are people who want to dash your hopes and crush your dreams. To grind them to dust and then gloat atop whatever remains; I know it's not something nice to say on the day of your birthday, but that's how things are. Yet..."
As another squeeze was given; the brunette's features softened right afterward. "But... I think that, in part, that's what friends are for. A single straw is easy to bend, but get enough of them together, and it gets really, really hard. There's a lot of people that cares for you, you know? There was no reason for you to face what you faced on your own."
Up to that moment, that was a pretty big question, at least to Amelie. Why would she face Void on her own? Considering how she had been outmatched from the first moment, it seemed like a very dumb idea, but wasn't going to question that right now. "Letting those events dash your dreams would be akin to admitting defeat, and as far as I can see, there's still ways to go before even considering that option. There's plenty of things left to do."
With any luck, that'd be rousing enough! And if not, at least there was this perfectly fine bottle of daiquiri that didn't mind being drunk in the same measure that the brunette didn't mind drinking it.

No point denying Amelie was right regarding Katherine and her curiosity for drinking. Mainly because she was. “Well… yes. I wanted to try it at some point.” And there probably was not a better place to do so than this exact moment. She didn’t feel she had any questions, except maybe…
“How many drinks do you think it’d take to make me drunk or something like that?” Was that an exact number? Or did it change for each person? Considering Jazz was a lot smaller, could it be she could get drunk faster? Katherine would definitely keep an eye on her for the rest of the evening. Or at least while she had that glass.
When it came to being taken care of, Katherine had almost unwillingly granted Amelie the spot number one. When asked about a place where she could feel safe, she actually thought about Amelie! A person was the individual where she felt the safest, and that had to mean a lot. “You are.” Katherine’s green eyes drifted towards her glass, then back at Amelie. “I’ll trust you, then.” Was she going to regret this?
Both Katherine and Jazz helped Amelie move the snacks and drinks to the coffee table. While Jazz took a seat in front of the table to keep eating sandwiches, Katherine just sank into the couch, letting herself feel as relaxed as she could.
The Spaniard looked at her own hand being grabbed by Amelie’s, to then take a sip of her glass and place it back at the table, while she listened to her, closely. While she did, she used her free hand to grab some snacks. As it was suspected to happen sooner or later, Amelie mentioned the city she was building inside the Dark Area. Katherine and Jazz exchanged looks immediately.
Then, the teenager looked at Amelie again. “There’s this girl I met back in the restaurant I told you about. Akemi Amaya. She told me about this city you were building.” Of course, she had mentioned some of that through that D-Terminal chat Amelie and she had had some days ago. The original plan was to tell Amelie they wanted to join her in this, but… Again, everything had changed. She had no idea of what she wanted right now. It was clear Jazz didn't either.
Now... a lot of people who cared about her? That was hard to imagine, at this point. It took her a while to realize this, maybe because she was mainly looking for human companions in her head. But the truth was that, although Amelie and Ooi were her only human friends, her life had been saved some days ago by Akane and Kiriha, two digimon who cared about her and Jazz. There was also Reiki, Jazz’s brothers, Alraumon, Arthur, Okimi, Liquid, Garmore, and maybe even Paul.
Even when there was one digimon (maybe a whole organization) trying to kill her, there was also a group of different digimon who had helped her along the way. Forgetting about those when counting friends would minimize all of their sacrifices. And that wasn’t really fair, was it?
It seemed like, without having to speak to each other, both Katherine and Jazz had realized this. They both mustered a dim smile.
Of course, there was a lot more to it than having friends or not. They had almost died some days ago, and that couldn’t be changed. Regardless of her allies, the near-death experience was giving her a lot of trouble to keep moving forward. Even she could tell that was the case.
Right now, she… no, they felt absolutely unable to fair off against these enemies. She didn’t want people risking their lives for her every single time. She wanted to be able to save herself and give back some of the help she had been given. The problem was… becoming stronger involved going back there and risking her life agaom.
“I’ve been a burden for too long…” This time, Katherine’s gaze went somewhere else. She tried to scoot her hand back. “I just didn’t want to keep causing trouble to everyone.”
Ugh. The conversation had turned real dark, real fast, hadn’t it?
It seemed like Katherine wanted to say something else, but she didn’t. This time, it was Jazz the one who spoke.
“Sometimes admitting defeat is not a choice, Shisei.”
Katherine’s eyes widened.
“Sometimes you’re just too afraid of moving, of pushing forward. Because you’re afraid of... dying.” Her tone of voice sounded more serious than ever.
At that moment, Katherine realized how much her partner had grown. The Lopmon was sitting right there, looking at Amelie into her eyes and explaining how her tamer felt. Something that Katherine couldn't even do herself.
The Spaniard’s eyes started getting a little wet. Without looking at Amelie yet, she uttered some more words. Her voice sounded a bit broken now. “See…? Jazz wasn’t like this when I met her. She wasn’t afraid of fighting.”
“K-Kath…”
“I made her like this. Because I’m weak. It’s my fault she’s afraid.”
Back to feeling terrible, it seemed.

Kath's comment managed to change's Amy's expression into a sly one. Right where she wanted her! "See..." A slight teasing hint, coming from a person that knew she was right all along. Definitely a very dangerous weapon in the brunette's hands. "Daiquiri's pretty light. If you haven't eaten anything, the fourth or fifth glass should begin to get you a bit tipsy, but since we have food and stuff... probably more? That's my approximation, at least! There's a lot more stuff to factor in, so don't take it as a hard rule."
It was no secret that alcohol worked way more quickly on an empty stomach, and that's why most people weren't advised to drink without food. Go figure what happened to the people who did so; the results tended to not be very pleasant.
Buuut that wasn't something that really mattered at the moment; beaming at the amount of trust the dark-haired girl had on her, Amy nodded in affirmation. At least for as long as she remained in here, the girl would do everything in her power to guaranteed her friend's safety. That much was a fact.
Lost amid her own speech, Amelie had completely forgotten about the fact that her friends were both aware of the city she was building. Talk about a faux pas, even if it was one that didn't matter all that much.
"Guess I forgot that detail. Whoops." Undaunted by that mistake, the girl responded. "Akemi's a good girl, for what that's worth. I'm sure you two will become fast friends. She's probably among the most trustworthy persons I know."
With any luck, the two would hang out more often! They were a good match, at least on Amy's mind. However, those thoughts would be left in the backburner for now; despite what she could or couldn't say, it seemed that Katherine was pretty deep in her hole, so much as to refuse the brunette's words or gestures.
What could she say? The statement was more or less as soon as the girl's hand slowly tried to inch back. No good; a small frown was already forming in Amy's face. For the first time in a while, the young woman found herself at a loss.
"I guess we could talk about what happened for the whole night, yet... I doubt it'd do us any good if you have already decided that. I'm... sorry." A sigh escaped her throat; the situation couldn't turn any worse, couldn't it? "I don't think you made Jazz weak. Being afraid isn't a sign of weakness. It might sound harsh, but recklessness isn't really considered a virtue; I think that you actually gave her a reason for not wanting to die. But if you want to think about that as a weakness, I guess that no one here has the need for something as inconvenient as bonds or friendship, right? I'm not having any of that, Katherine. I can get that you're sad, but if you're going to loathe yourself for being a good friend... I guess there's no real reason for us to be here. Wouldn't you think so? Whether you consider it a big deal or not, the reason why we're all here is because of you."
The way Amy saw it, the way to solve the problem was easy enough. At least on paper. "I don't know why I let it reach this point; it was a bit shortsighted on my part." By now, her tone couldn't be more serious. "This is mostly the edgy birdman's fault, isn't it? He's been stalking you for a while, and has pushed you into this heap; he just doesn't wanna leave you alone."
A small pause served to add depth to Amelie's following words; Katherine probably had never seen her being this serious. "I will kill him. Even if I have to go to the ends of the Digital World to do, I'll make sure he regrets everything he has done to you. Dearly."
Talking about vengeance on a birthday was probably as unbecoming as it could get. Thankfully, the atmosphere was dissipated by the sound of the door being unlocked shortly after. Obviously, it was none other than Ooi, even if most of her figure was obscured by the number of boxes she was carrying.
"Help..." How she had managed to ascend three floors with them? Probably something she had to ask later! For now, Amy rushed to help her roommate. It'd be a bit of a tragedy if she ended up sprawled in the floor and dropped the boxes' contents.

Well, yes. Akemi did seem nice and... She could always use more human friends. After all, except for Amy, all of the friends she had made so far were Digimon. Well, there was another exception... But where could he be?
Not like there was much time to dwell on that. Although her hand had kept trying to escape her friend's grip, she did listen closely to all of her words. Jazz did too, her head raised.
Amy had a good point, that was not even remotely up for debate. What was really surprising was that it was Amelie saying all of that. The same girl who had said she was not even a good person herself when they talked back in front of Liquid's hut. Was she actually someone who valued people's good deeds that much? Regardless of this, she had said something that had reached Katherine. It had hit her hard. Slowly, her eyes drifted towards Jazz, who was also staring at her tamer upon this realization.
Katherine had given that digimon the drive to take care of her own life. And Jazz had given Katherine's life meaning too!
When they both thought about it... Would they have been so afraid of dying months ago when they were both leaving lives they didn't feel fully happy with? The fact that they refused to die meant that they were living the lives they wanted. The fact that they were so scared right now meant they had given their lives meaning, which had resulted in fear from losing those lives. Both the human and the bunny seemed to understand this.
The problem was that committing to that life and trying to protect it meant risking it. Were they willing to do that? One thing was for sure... They shouldn't feel bad for being afraid of death. Amy had helped them realize that.
Slowly, Katherine started uttering some words, very quietly."I do... Love my life at your side." All of this while staring at Jazz. Then, the curly haired girl blinked and turned towards her friend.
"W-What did you...?"
Nonononono! It was not as simple as that! Sure, Amy was strong but...
"What are you saying? There is a whole organization behind Luke. They are very dangerous, powerful Digimon. You can't face that by yourself!" That was pure Insanity right there!
“He will leave me alone. I believe he doesn’t have any reason to kill us now that he has the gems. If I just let it be…” Just saying that made her voice turn dim and made her lower her gaze. A breach of silence ensued.
“… Ugh." Another pause. "It’s so … weird.” She managed. “Just the thought of not going back to the Digital World… Makes me very sad.”
If they gave up, they lived. But… was she going to give up? Was she even considering not doing so? In any case…!
“P-Please…! Don’t do anything stupid, okay?” She knew Amy was the type to not listening to anyone else when she got her mind set in something. So that’s why Katherine had to make sure she could convince her this was not the right course of action.
However, there wouldn’t be much time for that. The sound of Jazz’s glass hitting the table made the eyes of the birthday girl go to the Lopmon, who just let out an audible 'Ahhh~'
The little bunny had placed her empty glass over the table. “That was actually very good!”
“Y-You drank it already?”
The sound of the door made both the girl and the bunny turn to see…
“Ooi.” A smile appeared in both of their faces upon seeing their friend. Katherine immediately stood up to try to aid her too, just like Amy did. “Here, I’ll have some of these…” She offered her empty hands to carry some of the boxes.
“What did you bring? More alcohol?” Jazz inquired. With Ooi there, the night was probably going to get a lot more interesting. She seemed like a fun girl, after all. Definitely not a nerd.

The topic of human friends was an interesting one. Like most things in life, bonds could be tied and untied depending on how strong they were. Sometimes, they could be strong enough to be completely unbreakable, while on others... not so much; mere feelings like jealousy, envy or unwillingness to understand and adapt to a reciprocal dynamic could spell certain doom to any relationship. A tricky topic, no doubt.
Ultimately, Amy let go of Katherine's hand; she had already said her piece, and considering how the Spaniard kept on trying to escape her grip, better to just not cause her more discomfort. The speech was already doomed to cause quite the impact, wasn't it? It wasn't really fair to make things even more uncomfortable for her.
At least, it seemed that her words had some effect, given the tender words that followed, progress was being made! Regrettably, it didn't last long; the dark-haired teenager's focus immediately went towards her next batch of words, and the nascent plot to make Luke pay for everything he has done to Katherine. Of course she was going to advise caution in the face of her brush with death, and of course that, for the average person, that claim would've been something utterly ridiculous. Something borderline insane, or maybe a bold-faced lie.
For Amelie, however...? She waved a hand dismissively at her friend's concern; an otherwise casual gesture of her, even if it was executed with way more weight than its usual iteration. At least this time, she was in for serious.
"Just leave it to me." A small smile graced her face after uttering those words. "I'm the one that just said that recklessness isn't a virtue, remember? I'd be one hell of a hypocrite if I just went and threw my life away. Not to say that I wouldn't accomplish shit; thought you knew I was smarter than that!"
Her tone was mostly casual by this point. That was probably the correct way to tone down the atmosphere. "I won't happen immediately. Maybe not even for years, but... I'll dismantle that organization. And I'll kill Luke. If that means you'll be able to live without that thorn at your side, it doesn't seem like a bad idea, don't you think? No reason to give up those gems. Letting a friend live in fear of somebody when you can have a say on it sounds really dumb."
Despite the weird stalemate, the conversation would end rather abruptly at Jazz finishing her whole glass and Ooi's sudden entrance. Luckily, the girl's two friends could help her in time before a catastrophe happened with the boxes. With her hands now empty, the girl just went to the kitchen and retrieved a glass before helping herself with some of the daiquiri.
"That's more like it. I thought my arms were about to fall off for a sec. Thanks, girls!" Maybe purposefully, but up to that point, the girl had ignored Katherine's question. "Didn't know you were that big into alcohol already but... nope, you're mistaken. You really didn't think you were just going to drink and chat away the whole night, right? I've brought the entertainment!"
What was inside the boxes, then? Microphones, an audio console, a portable speaker and a laptop. "Hope you're a good singer, because I've brought enough karaoke tracks to sing until we can't do it anymore!"

Now that Amelie seemed to have stated her resolve to end Luke for good, the conversation was revolving around that topic. Which was honestly not surprising, considering what she was saying sounded absolutely insane and was making Katherine very nervous!
“I-I know you’re smart, but…” Did she even have an idea of what she was saying? Katherine had experienced being in front of both Amelie’s evolved form (apparently named Heraldmon) and Luke. And even though, at the time, none of them was using all of their power, she could quite tell, just from how she felt by standing next to both digimon, the power of the Valkyrimon was definitely far superior. However, it was also true she didn’t know if Amelie had another card under her sleeve.
And she didn’t want to find out! What was all of that about dismantling the Dark Army? Katherine was definitely not letting people get hurt trying to help her, doing what she was supposed to do herself!
And even if she was prepared to argue about this a bit (or a lot) longer, Ooi’s arrival had interrupted their conversation.
“No problem.” Katherine chimed, putting her share of boxes on the floor. It had been a bit hard to carry those, even for as little as she did. What could she say? She was really not a strong girl. “I didn’t know she was that big into alcohol either, honestly. Especially considering she only had her first glass ever.” For a second, her eyes went to Jazz, only to go back to Ooi after, letting out a sigh in the process.
Of course, curiosity would get the best out of Jazz, who would just climb some of the boxes to check what was inside, taking out some of the instruments for what Ooi considered a fun evening. Almost immediately, Katherine’s face got a bright, red color. “I’m terrible at singing!” In a rather common gesture of her, she took both of her hands to her mouth, placing her two index fingers on top of her lips. “No way. I know people from Japan like to karaoke but I have never done anything like that. My voice is horrible!” Multiple shakes of her head accompanied these sentences.
This was definitely something the Spaniard was not prepared for. She definitely could not sing outside of the shower and much less in front of other people.
Jazz, however, didn’t seem to quite have gotten the point. Her look and her words were being directed at Amelie, while Katherine kept mumbling, trying to explain why there was no way she could sign right now.
“Sofia had one of these back at the race. They were called microphones, weren’t they?” It was only thanks to her being quite a good observer that she was able to somehow elucidate what these were. “I know they are used to make your voice sound louder but… what are we going to use these for, Shisei?”
The Lopmon tilted her head, holding one of the microphones in her right hand and looking at it.

While Katherine's concern was understandable, Amelie honestly thought that the girl was either being overly sensitive towards the situation or just that she was needlessly worrying about the whole deal? The brunette hadn't even drunk enough to not know that the ordeal in front of her would be one of massive proportions. Why her intentions wouldn't be taken as what they were? It wasn't that hard, really.
Ooi's arrival to the apartment could be described both as opportune or inopportune, depending on whether one valued the continuation of the previous conversation or shifting into a more birthday-ish mood more. Considering that Katherine would probably appreciate relaxing for a change, it was probably a good thing.
Speaking of which! The shorter girl couldn't help a chuckle in the face of her friend's statement. "Guess she's really precocious, then! As long as she can manage not getting drunk at the speed of light, Jazz should be alright. Or even if she does! Doubt digimon are really capable of throwing up, as interesting as that would be. Just relax."
Were they even able to? For a normal human like Ooi, those questions were pretty much impossible to answer. What she could answer, however, was Curls' embarrassment regarding her supposed inability to sing! "Don't worry. With Amy over here, we call anyone who gets a rank beyond the absolute worst a tryhard. That should give you an idea about how good we are at hitting the notes. You'll be fine!"
Of course, Amelie accompanied her friend's speech with an encouraging gesture. "This isn't American Idol. We're just gonna sing to have fun. No boys to impress over here, as far as I can see. Try to just let loose; it's a lot of fun!"
While the statement on their activity for the night had no doubt made a number on Katherine, Jazz seemed to be positively intrigued by all the things the girl had brought. At least it seemed they've caught somebody's interest! Since the words were aimed at the brunette, Ooi took the tip to pour herself a glass of daiquiri as she began to work on plugging everything as quickly as possible.
"Yup." Raising one of them with her left hand, she pointed at it. "This is called a microphone, or mic for short! They can be used to make your voice louder, but here, we're gonna use them as recording devices. Basically, as a way for the notebook Ooi is plugging to recognize our voices."
After that, explaining the rest would be quite straightforward! "So, the computer is gonna play a mix very well-known songs, at least to humans, and two of us are gonna try and match the singer's or singers' voice to the best of our ability. Whoever gets the higher score wins, even though playing to win is as lame as they come; what matters is having fun!"
Of course, that was an incredibly brief version. Karaoke was one of those things that became way more straightforward in practice than in theory; once they got to sing, Jazz would get used to it in no time! She was a quick learner, after all!
"So. Who wants to sing first?" Ooi asked, after finishing with the whole setup. The computer's screen was already showing the program's starter screen. "The birthday person's gotta be one for sure. But who else? Jazz, maybe? Or do you want to give it a go, Amy?"
The young woman gazed at the digimon expectantly, just to see how much interest she displayed in this small venture. Would she accept? Or would she prefer to observe first?

Apparently, both Amelie and Ooi were terrible at karaoke and were only in it to have fun. Could those words be trusted or were they just saying that to make Katherine sing? And, most importantly... What if Katherine was actually worse than that!? This was too much pressure!
Shifting her gaze to a side, the Spaniard muttered some words, while slowly puffing her cheeks. "I don't care if there are boys to impress, what about not singing awfully in front of your friends?" Those words were almost impossible to catch, given the speed she blurted those with.
"Haha!" Jazz let out a tiny chuckle. "Don't be silly, Shisei. It doesn't matter if there are boys to impress or not."
"Exactly." Katherine nodded, confidently.
"Because Kath doesn't like boys."
"Exactly." She went again before her eyes opened up wide immediately after. "W-What!? Of course I do!"
While she poured daiquiri into another glass for herself, Jazz blinked twice looking at her tamer. "But you're always talking about how pretty Shisei and that other girl you met before you met me are."
Did Jazz actually just say that? Oh gosh! This was so embarrassing the earth could open up and just eat Katherine for what the green-eyed cared! "W-Well...!" Well... "That's because I can appreciate the beauty of a friend! Even if its a girl." Of course!
With a 'Hmph!' Katherine took one of the microphones. While this embarrassing conversation took place, the girls seemed to have taken care of setting everything up.
Jazz, on her side, seemed to have understood all of Shisei's explanation. And that's exactly why she knew she couldn't go first. "I don't think I know any human songs, so please, you go first. I'll watch!" She seemed completely down to participate, she just needed to know a song! Which was hard, considering she had only been in this word for a week.
With this, Katherine, still looking a bit flustered at the bunny's previous comments, just turned to face the screen. "Okay. I'll do it." She muttered before taking a good sip from her glass, leaving it empty. "I'm not very good with music. Specially if it's music in Japanese. So please choose a song that's kind of well known."
Jazz would turn to Ooi, while they both drank. "Can you teach me a song, Ooi? I want to play too!" standing over the table, she directed this request at the raven-haired girl.
