Magic tricks are nothing but illusions. So why was it that Katsuo Saishiro had actually disappeared? He stared in disbelief at the small device that had materialized in his hands.
He stood in the trough of a series of lush, rolling hills. The grass was slightly damp, as if a gentle rain fell from the clouds earlier. But Katsuo wasn't supposed to be here. He was supposed to be understage.
It was one of his bigger shows, held in a popular hotel. Katsuo had hired an assistant to aid in his performance. He had the crowd's complete, devoted attention. The lights were all staring at him. He basked in it before stepping into the upright coffin behind him. The assistant sealed it shut, and as he listened to them hammering nails to show the audience it was unopenable, Katsuo was running his fingers along the floor. He felt a tiny notch and gripped it with his gloved fingertips, lifting a hidden trapdoor. Silently he slipped under the stage. What the audience saw was the assistant stab a blade into a slot in the side of the coffin, but truly it was already empty.
As Katsuo was maneuvering towards the staircase leading to the area behind the backstage curtain, his phone shone brightly in his pocket, dispelling the pitch black darkness. He hesitated for a moment, then pulled out his phone. Binary jargon was racing across the screen. And that's when it shone the brightest, blinding him.
And when his eyes readjusted themselves, he found himself somewhere completely different.
"What on earth...?" He muttered to himself. He put the strange device in his pocket and removed the mask from his face- he was still in his stage outfit. Katsuo climbed to the top of the nearest hill and looked around.
The hills rolled on and on into the distance dotted with the occasionally tree, and further in the distance he could make out a forest. Scattered through the landscape were various ponds. However, there were no buildings to be found. Katsuo's heart began to quicken, both with fear and excitement. He was in the middle of nowhere.
Just then, he felt something gently touch his back. He turned around, just to have a bubble touch his cheek and pop. Immediately it began to itch. Katsuo flinched and brought a hand to his face. His eyes traveled down and met with what looked like a very upset plushy.
Oh, except plushies don't shoot bubbles at people. Katsuo guarded his face with his sleeve as more bubbles popped harmlessly against his clothes. The small creature in front of him, covered in purple fur standing on end, glared at him.
"Who are you?" It barked. Katsuo was taken aback.
"It spoke," He said.
"I said, who are you?!" It jumped toward him. He took a step back.
"Uhm..." Katsuo swallowed. "Katsuo Saishiro?"
"Katsuo..? Katsuo..." Its fur began to relax, and it scratched its chin with its ear. "Katsuo... Do you have a Digivice?"
He raised his brow at the question. What was a Digivice? Was it...? He pulled out the gadget he was holding earlier. He felt his chest tighten. "This thing?"
It perked up immediately. "Yes! A Digivice! I knew it! I've been waiting for you, Katsuo. Although I don't think you're my type of partner..." It hopped towards him and began inspecting him closely.
Katsuo resisted kicking it away, and instead stepped back. "Waiting? Partner? I don't understand any of this! What are you? Where am I?!" He shouted.
The creature frowned. "I guess I have some explaining to do."
Hesitantly, Katsuo listened as the creature described itself and the world he had found himself in. The creature was known as a Pagumon, a species of Digimon, which are lifeforms made of data. He was in the Digital World, where the Digimon live. Sometimes humans will enter the Digital World and are granted a Digivice, and sometimes there are partner Digimon waiting for their arrival.
"I was born knowing your name, Katsuo." A glimmer of light appeared in Pagumon's eyes, but quickly faded. "That should make us partners."
"What's it mean... To be partners?" The magician asked, but Pagumon had turned around and was hopping away. "Pagumon?"
"Just call me Loki," He replied, still going. "Now come on. I'm going to see if you're really my partner or not."
Katsuo stood, going through the sudden new reality in his head. When he had returned from his thoughts, Loki was already at the bottom of the hill. "Hey! Wait up! Loki!"
And so he followed the Digimon, no more words being spoken between them. It wouldn't be much longer before they encountered someone else, though...

Falling out of the sky appeared to be a large red dragon with metal wings and spikes on the wings and tail, a DORUgurremon. The go getting Digimon known as Do was recently in a battle with a hoard of varying Digimon bullying a small village, and unbeknownst to him, they were capable of champion or psuedo Champian level. While he was the only one left alive, he did not get away scot free as in a suicide last move, the hoard tried to use a heavy force explosion, but Do managed to het one las blow in causing both parties to be wiped off the battlefield in the Server Woods. "Oh crap oh crap oh crap!"
The red Digimon crashed down in the path of the male human and the small digimon, spikey head first into a hill. The impact sent him burrowing into the ground as he turned the hill into a crator, sending chunks of dirt flying as all that could be seen was the dragonic body standing on its head as the spike was stuck, for an awkward few moments until it fell over. The body groaned in pain, laying down in the dirt.
The body glew into a bright purple light as it shrunk down and turned into a purple squirrel like fox, a DORUmon, wearing a silver scarf... and still has his head stuck in the ground. Muffled yelling could be heard as he failed to get his head out of the small crevice his previous form's horn made.
Shortly after a speeding hovering RV appeared on the scene, approaching the scene as Chie was incredibly worried. She was busy collecting herbs at a market when Do asked to be digivolved and flew off ssying hill be back shortly, only for Chie to see a giant red figure flying through the sky after a massive explosion. She knew Do was out playing the hero role again, and this time it looked like it really hurt. Driving down the path, she eventually saw two figures, a human and a Digimon.
Pulling over to the side, she rolled down her window as she noticed the uniquely dressed man, she smiled and kindly addressed the two. She notedthat the digimon was still in the baby levels, so she figured best to make friends, but she had her own digimon to worry about "Excuse me, but have either of you seen a DORUgurremon around here? Large, red dragon with metal wings, about 1000 pounds."

Katsuo stopped, looked up, and pointed. "What the hell is that?" There seemed to be something in the sky, and it was getting bigger.
No, wait, it was getting closer.
Loki stopped and looked. His squinted eyes widened. He opened his mouth to speak, but just then the DORUgurremon crashed into a hill a little ways away from them, annihilating it. Dirt and dust flew everywhere, forcing the two to shield their eyes. There was a loud thud, followed by a flash of light from within the dust cloud.
"Come on! Hurry!" Loki exclaimed, rushing to the crater. Katsuo ran after him, the existence of his legs making him much faster than the Digimon. Lagging behind, Loki barked "Hey! No fair!"
The magician stopped, turned around, and scooped Loki in his arms. The Digimon protested but gave in to being carried to the scene. It was kind of nice to have someone do the legwork for you, actually. The dust was almost done settling when an RV rolled up to the new duo.
Another human, Katsuo noted. "DORUgurremon? Um... Could that have been what fell from the sky and landed over there?" He pointed in the direction of the crater.
Loki huffed. "Of course it is! Did you see any other big, red, dragon Digimon around here? Hm?"
Katsuo ignored Loki. "I'm Katsuo Saishiro, by the way." He dropped Loki and bowed. The Digimon yelped upon impact with the ground. "Who might you be?"
Loki spat his Toxic Bubbles at Katsuo. "Nobody cares about you!" He then turned to Chie. "Heed him no mind, my fair lady! I am Loki," He said, mimicking Katsuo's gesture with his ears. Katsuo shot him a dirty look.

"Oh, must be a fresh relationship" Chie thought as she listened to the man and the small Digimon, it was clear that the man was well mannered but the Digimon had a very quirky personality. It was few occasions like this that made her glad that she was stuck with the purple fox. When the Digimon attacked the human, she grabbed a baby wipe from the box in her door and handed it to the man. "Here, take this. Digimon partner relationships are very complicated. Takes a while for a natural routine to set. Also Loki, show him some respect, you know you need him to Digivolve out of the baby levels."
Chie noted the direction of the crater, and parked her RV before pulling her Divigivce out of the dashboard and clasping the thin silver chain around her neck, deactivating the internal lights and all systems before Chie got out of the side door and walked around to meet the new pairing. She bowed courteously and tried to hope that she could make a good impression before Do could be introduced. "Allow me to formally introduce myself, I am Chie, and the fluff ball that crashed, at least I'm assuming he's a fluff ball now, is my Digimon partner Do. Lord knows how far back he devolved. Excuse me for a moment."
Chie then began to walk towards the crater, convinced that she'd be utterly embarrassed by Do yet again. She accepted that Do is the way he is, but sometimes it made meeting new people awkward.
Meanwhile, after the DORUmon came out of his momentary lapse of consciousness only to find his head stuck in the ground. He tried to pull his head out but found himself wedged in there, unable to move too much, ended up flailing around, his muffled cries could be heard as he tried to speak. However he had an idea to get out by shooting his way out, as he tried to shoot a series of iron balls, but unfortunately, he shoot too many balls too quickly and ended up clogging his throat. When Chie approached the border, she could immediately tell that Do had done something stupid as she could hear the sound of him choking on the iron balls. "Do! You idiot, you used Metal Cannon? Metal blast or Dino Tooth would have gotten you out better..."
Chie sighed as she closed and rubbed her eyes for a moment, as Do seemed to start moving slower before just laying there. She slowly opened her eyes as she knew she had to do something, even if Do lied to her, got into a fight, and ended up ironically in a hole he made. "Well, looks like I'm going to have to do something. Armored Digivolution unfortunately, since I guess he burned his natural line for now."
Chie pulled out her Digivice and unclasped it before she pressed the right button, then the left button, a wand like item appeared on the screen before replaced by lines of codes after the center button was pressed. Chie held the silver trimmed Digivice Burst so the air port was pointed towards the purple Digimon, then slammed down top of the device with her left hand as the red port glowed, as a stream of data poured out and took the shape of the Shakujou before it solidified into the seemingly wooden tool, before it got shot at the Digimon, hitting him on the back of his head, before bouncing up into the air.
The purple Digimon groaned before his body turned into a purple light, the purple was overtaken by a white as the fox features slimmed down as the four foot tall bipedial fox like creature's claws slimmed into feminine arms, the small stature elongated as the purple light stopped at the head, snapping off from the body becoming a mask as as the figure was able to then stand, the light faded as the DORUmon was gone, and in formerly his place, stood a 6'10 tall woman with a mask, who then caught the Shakujou, who then looked up and nodded, stepping backwards and seemingly disappearing into thin air, before appearing right beside Chie. "Really? You had to go off and get into an explosion? Anyways, we got company, this is Katsuo, and his newfound partner the Pagumon, Loki."
Chie turned to face the other Duo, gesturing to Do to introduce. "Katsuo, Loki, meet Do, he, er, she, Digimon sorta tend to have an occasional ability to switch genders and possibly personalities depending on form, she is normally a male DORUmon." Do bowed as she introduced herself, "It's a pleasure to meet you two-" However Do seemed to cough out a few iron balls, before struggling to regain her breath, Chie patted her on the back and tried to check on her partner. "Really my love. You had to pick my one form that can't digest or create metal?" Chie rolled her eyes. "Flamedramon or DORUgamon wouldn't have had better luck getting out. What were you even doing to get into that crevice?" Do eventually stood back up, pridefully ignoring answering the question to Chie directly as she spoke to the two. "Forgive me if I had startled you, I was fighting a hoard of Digimon known for attacking small villages, I underestimated their power and let's just say, it was a mutual destruction."
Chie pouted slightly but figured best to avoid a fight in front of the duo, as she changed the subject back to them. She would take this up with Do later. "Sorry if we happened to interrupt anything though. Is there anything you need help with?"

Katsuo took the wipe and nodded. "Thank you very much," he said, cleaning the irritating liquid off his face. "You are very kind."
Loki's fur flattened. "Y-Yes, my lady..." Katsuo smirked and thought yeah, you better show me some respect, you little rascal, but resisted the urge to rub it in.
"It's such a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Chie." The boy looked around at the empty landscape that surrounded him. "I mean it, truly." The pair nodded and let her reunite with her partner. They decided to follow her to only the edge of the crater.
"She has a Digimon partner," Katsuo commented.
"Most humans that arrive in the Digital World do."
"Does every Digimon get a partner?" He looked down at Loki.
The Pabumon closed his eyes for a moment. "No." He met eyes with his partner and frowned. "The few that do are very lucky. Usually."
Katsuo scowled. "What's that supposed to mean?!" Loki ignored him. The boy sighed and returned his attention to Chie and Do at the center of the crater. He saw her hold something in her hand and point it at her partner, and something materialized and struck the DORUmon.
"That looks like it hurt," Loki commented.
A light began to envelop the Digimon, and miraculously, it transformed into a masked woman. The fresh duo was still awestruck by the time Do and Chie approached them.
"D-Digimon can do that? Just... Shapeshift?" Katsuo sputtered.
"It's called Digivolution," Loki answered. "But not just any Digimon can become as beautiful as Do here." He winked at her, but she was currently choking on something and her partner seemed to be scolding her.
Katsuo regained his composure. "Need help with? Yeah... Just about everything. Loki here filled me in on the whole deal with the Digital World, but I'm still..." He bit his lip. "Overwhelmed, I suppose." Loki rolled his eyes. "Does the Digital World have towns or cities I could rest in?"

Chie heard the conversation between Katsuo and Loki, it was evident that Katsuo was still learning the basics of the world. She knew at that point it was going to be a long afternoon as she couldn't let the poor man just walk away without proper information. While there were plenty of options to go to, Chie felt that it was best that she at least had a chat with the man before she guided him towards a populated area. She tapped Do's thigh with the back of her hand, who had taken the hint and walked towards the RV.
Chie focused on the duo, hoping to avoid any worse stress for the man. Plus she could imag ine the Digimon's attitude causing them to be chased out of town quite easily. "Yeah, there's technically two, the Village of Beginnings and Rosewood town, but I don't advise rushing towards a populated area yet if you need to unwind from feeling overwhelmed. Especially if you don't have local currency yet."
Chie then looked down at the Digimon, and figured best to correct it on what has actually transpired. "Also Loki, more precisely, what happened was Armor Digivolution,a variant, but on a whole different principle." Meanwhile Do had set up the awning and opened up an external compartment to pull out and set up four Lawn chairs, and a white board under the awning. Chie gestured towards the seating as Do had finished before walking over. "Please, have a seat. If you want something to drink, water, iced tea, apple juice, feel free to ask. Sorry but we're out of tea."
Chie sat down on one of the chairs followed by Do in another beside her. Chie let out a deep breath as she prepared herself, trying to figure out where to begin. Do noticed her state and decided to follow her lead. "Alright Katsuo, let's start with the basics. This world is an alternate world with sentient creatures called Digimon, connected with the one we are from. Digimon are creatures that come in all shapes, forms, and sizes, you might think your overwhelmed now, but when you got an orange dinosaur chasing you, things might get weird. The principles of this world follow some sort of data algorithms, ranging from the sky to the ground, all some form of data." Chie paused for a moment to let the entire concept sink in for the man, before Do tapped her knee twice, letting her know she was taking over silently.
"You see, us Digimon have a unique attribute, we can undergo a metamorphosis called Digivolution to essentially evolve to a stronger level. Some Digimon can do so naturally, others with help from a special human, one that fate assigns and leads here in time, those humans are called a Chosen." Do made sure to give Loki a stare right through his core as she asked a simple question. "Am I to understand he's also not experienced with the level system?" Chie rolled her eyes. "Hun, not trying to judge you here, but shouldn't we explain the relationship a Chosen and Digimon have first?" Do shrugged it off as she downplayed her partner's thinking. "Well one is hard to see without the other but the level system is universal, and can easily link back to it while explaining the dynamic. Anyways, any questions so far Katsuo?"
