Second Imp is the Charm? [Carlos]

"I see, I don't know if it's as bad as I thought, less than it or actually worse... but either way, there's no time like present to change that mindset. Having goal is important. Listen well, there's no one in this world that tells us what we should do other than to protect our humans... but tell me, is that's all what we are? If that's the case why don't they just toss some robots to these humans? Why must it be us, Digimons, much more ones with feeling, emotions and whatnot? Sure human needs protection, but if you only focus there, your life are going to get dull really fast.
We're here as friends, we're here to grow with them, to live alongside them... but it doesn't mean that they must be shackle that binds us. There's more to Valt than "Ryouta's guardian and moral pet". You're given free will and intelligence, then you must define big actions in your life. Don't just 'flow for the sake of flowing'. Some actions have more meaning if you let yourself flowing when you seriously have reason why you do that. It's one thing kayaking down the stream and let the stream carry you on some parts while enjoying the scenery, but it's another thing to just let the river carries you without you knowing why you did it."
Valt hoped that it explains it. Fighting with a heart is simply to understand your ideal, and your reason why to not mindlessly fight for something without actually knowing the reason why. It's no different than being a marionette after all, and that's not something to be proud of.

By the time Valt had finished a lot of conflicting thoughts seemed to be stirring on the imp's mind. A lot of what he said rang true with him but he was also certain that following his tamer blindly without thinking for himself had never really been a thing.
"Hey, for your information I do have a lot of goals besides following Carlos." The imp retorded back, arms crossed as if offended. "Power, fighting the strongest out there, followers, maybe power...it may shock you to hear the Dark Lord craves for something else other than just going with the flow." He shrugged. How he hoped to accomplish any of those goals however was something he didnt quite know...or if those goals were what he actually wanted to begin with. And...that still didn't quite solve their craving for fighting for its own sake.
"Uhm...I just want to stay with Dio and Carlos." Gio soon added somewhat unsurely, as if he somehow he knew that answer was probably lackluster. Dio looked back at his brother with an amused look, before giving the guilmon a vigorous pat on the head, something that made his brother visibly happy.
"So what would you say we should do then, 'Valt sensei'? Does your training come with a self help booklet about 'finding your true reason to fight' or something to that effect?" Dio asked, half sarcastically, half seriously.

"Then my disciple, let me ask... You crave to be stronger, but what for?" Valt asked. "Why do you need to be stronger? Why do you need power? Why do you need follower? Why do you need to fight the strongest there is? And let's say you get it afterward, then what? What's next after that power? Is there something that forces you to get that power? Then... afterward, ask yourself... what's after that? Then what's after that? Will you ever satisfied with just that power? Or are you the type that think your current power is not enough?"
Valt's words seem to come heavy. "...I know a friend who was lost in his conquest for power. He feared for his life, and he felt if he got stronger, he won't live in fear. So he fought, fought, and fought, and the more he grows stronger, rather than living alone, he ended up getting chased by people who wanted that power for themselves. He practically become target of their attacks. And so he absorbed, absorbed, and absorbed... until he reached the peak... yet, his mind collapsed. His mental cannot handle so many egos inside of him. He became an incarnation of destruction.
...There's no pride in that. No honor, no use when your own self become your own enemy. This... is how you can get lost in your own ideal."
Valt turned away and looked outside. "I cannot dictate what you should fight for, or show you the way, because it'll be useless if you got too tainted by my own ideal. You must find your own tangible goal... Remember to never hold your conquest for such abstract goal to absolute. You'll die. And if you don't fear death, then fear what could happen to people who hold you dearly.
Does your conquest for power or past glory, like being a past demon lord is enough to sacrifice your partner, brother, and lovers, and even your child down the road? Power without use only gave birth to nihilism, remember that."

"I..." The imp hesitated, unsure on how to answer. That was a question he had asked himself before, but wasn't entirely convinced if he could be honest with his answer. Not so much because he feared what his teacher would think, but rather because he wasn't sure of his own answers. "...it's complicated." He said clearly avoiding answering for the time being, instead choosing to let Valt continue on as he tried to get his thoughts in order.
While he certainly didn't know what he would do if he ever reached his "desired" amount of power, he did have a couple ideas as to why he craved it so badly.
"When I get down to it I think it's because...well, you can't expect others to respect you if you can't back up your words with power, nor you can really protect yourself or anything without it. At least, that's part of it, the other I suppose it's just...old cravings that refuse to die." He sighed, something similar to embarrasment in his tone, himself knowing all too well what kind of trouble that line of thought could bring him. And indeed, Valt knew it well too, as he soon shared with him the story of another digimon consumed by the mad search of more power.
Even knowing nothing about this digimon prior to hearing the veemon's story, Dio could almost symphatize with his fallen friend. He wasn't certain, but there was some vague sense of familiarity with some of the beats of his story too. Perhaps Dio himself had suffered a similar persecution in a past life? At the very least that gnawing uncertainty about his future if he didn't become stronger was something he had learned to feel all to well during his earlier years after being reborn in the Dark Area. Such a mindset was mandatory for survival, after all.
"Trust me, I know how wrong and self destructive those thoughts are, but I can't simply ignore them either. It's not something as simple as turning a switch on and off." He said pinching the bridge of his nose, sounding almost annoyed. This was quickly phased out by something different entirely once Valt mentioned his last, and perhaps biggest point.
Was power worth losing his loved ones?
Those last words did struck a nerve with him. He'd freeze for a moment, a cold chill crawling down his spine as he looked back at his confused looking sibling. The thought of leaving him alone to fend for himself again was...it was simply too much for him to even consider for longer than a second.
He'd reach for the blackguilmon and wordlessly hold him in a tight hug, much to Gio's delight and surprise. Perhaps wanting his smaller brother to look less down he'd chirp back something at the blue dragon, all the while patting the impmon's head vigorously. "Don't worry Valt-sensei. My bro isn't going anywhere, and if he does I'll just find him again!"
Dio could only let out a somewhat bittersweet chuckle, unsure if his brother was even aware of their "predicament" or if he just wanted to keep everyone's spirits up. Regardless, it was a commendable effort if nothing else.
"I won't forget it, sensei." Dio nodded, finally letting go of the guilmon and turning to face Valt, suddenly seeming rather reinvigorated "But! Philosophical talk aside, I think we should try to learn how to focus that power in a more constructive way, right?" Was the so called dark lord trying to get away from this talk to get back into the actual training or to avoid having to think about those uncertain questions? Not even him knew for sure.

"I mean I totally understand where do you come from, Dio. Each Digimon have this voice on the back of their head telling them to improve, get stronger, evolve to further stage... It's not limited just to dark area Digimons. It's basically our survival instinct telling us that we shouldn't be content with what power we have at the moment. It's our nature as a combat species.
As for competence that's another different story. I know people who have power but not respected or feared. The reason? Simply because no one can takes them seriously. For example when you evolve for the simplest of the matter... or flaunting your power without able to back it up, overestimating it. That's why when it comes to power, it's best to stay silent and let that power speaks for yourself. There's no need for flaunting. There's no need for excessive explanation of how strong you are...
Simply speaking: Have class."
But indeed, they're right, time to talk about training huh? "First, I'll be talking about your timing. Gio, your support is good, but your timing is off. You're not synergizing with your brother, causing your brother to take damage where he's not supposed to. Like when you raises barrier to protect yourself, but if you wanted to caught your brother, you should have used the timing to form that spherical barrier when Dio was a bit more closer. You should experiment with how fast can you bring up your barrier. Speed is the most important status for supporter. Yes, speed and defense. Speed increases your cast time and hasten your reaction time... defense is for when speed fails. You need to take some hits.
Dio, your weakness is that you're too caught up like I said before. It's indeed important to protect your brother and allies, and to deal as much damage as you can. That's your duty as the frontline after all. But you should position yourself better. You got shocked too easily when your attack was ignored, or dodged. You should try to use more strategy, like a follow up attack that could be stronger if your enemy dodges your attack on top of your previous attack chasing once more if dodged.
Mmmm, what else, what else... What struck me is that you also refuses to even take some step back. I think it's important to also take some step back when Gio is ready to send support buff your way or shield, so you can meet halfway, and therefore makes the execution of the support faster."
Valt think that was it.
"So pretty much, you two just need to know each other's temper better, and how you two flows in combat. I think it's important for you two to discuss how should you fight. You might have better perspective if you talk to each other rather than to assume."

"Alright, but how am I supposed to let my power speak for myself if I hardly get to use it outside combat? My actual enemies never seem all too interested in what the Dark Lord has to say, anyways." The imp said, crossing his arms and sighing, sounding rather dissapointed not so much at himself or Valt, but at the fact his grandiose words of self promotion seemed lost on the foes he usually fought.
Unrelated to that point however, it was honestly kind of odd having another digimon acknowledging so openly their innate desire of growing stronger and fighting. Dio had grown to assume all the "civilized, non dark area" digimon not only expected one to supress such a craving, but that it was looked down upon to even feel such a thing on the first place. At the very least, Valt's insight made him feel slightly better about that now.
That didn't last for long however, as the Veemon was quick to tear down everything wrong with the twins' admitedly sloppy performance just now, from Gio's bad timing to Dio's recklessness.
It wasn't easy, but he did his best to swallow his pride and let Valt give all his critisisms uninterrupted. He couldn't really argue against most of them regardless, what was he gonna use as an excuse? That he had left his ego get the better of him and his emotions clouded his judgement? It was frankly easier to let someone else tell him what he had done wrong than for him to actually admit he had done wrong.
"Got it, then we'll discuss strategies later." He sighed, glancing back at Gio, who simply returned him a happy, if somewhat oblivious looking smile. Was he even aware what "strategies" meant? Probably not, but if his brother was up for it then it couldn't be that bad.
"So is...training over, Valt Sama Sensei sir?"

"Then make your combat do the talking," Valt answered. "Fame is a thing you know, and it's a powerful tool. There's bad fame, there is good fame. If you insist on using your power willy nilly for even outside the fight, you'll gain bad fame, and your charisma will plummet. Lemme... put it like this. Let's say I keep hanging out with my Ulforce Vdramon form, and uses my power to do the talking to solve all my problem... Wouldn't some people began to thought that... I'm hiding some form of insecurity? Of course there are some who might think it's cool, but if I see someone like that, I think they're overcompensating for something.
Now, if you just let it chill, let your manner speak, just like flowing water, and then when the time come for you to evolve, you changed that water into a fierce tidal wave... at that time, people will see your charisma. There's a proverb for this one... The smallest dog barks the loudest. All bark and no bite. You don't have to care for every small problem and solve it with your power. Follow your heart, but don't let your ego do the talk,"
That was quite long, but that's his point. "But then again, the silent approach might not be the way for you. You should probably find your own way to show your charisma... But generally, charisma is found on stark contrast between flaw and actual ability. Just don't show your flaw to be superior than your actual ability. Now that's way to lose respect quite fast."
Is the training over? "For the meantime, it's over. I have seen enough of what I wanted to see, and I'll return to you tomorrow to give you your training menu. I expect no tardiness from you two. You should come here... let's see..." Valt looked at the clock on the wall. "...Midday. Twelve o'clock tomorrow Digital World time."
