Delay That Can't Be Helped [Kenny/Quill/Adrian]

"Yeah. They tour around the digital world a bit though, so you might encounter 'em elsewhere." Max replied to Kenny about Haunted Threnody.
Max grinned at the thought of this recipe being shared. It wasn't one of his "great secret" recipes that he'd only cook himself or with those that he trusted, but he thought it was an important, healthy recipe full of flavour and protein that could keep a digimon or a human full of energy for a long time. "Feel free, might wanna write down the ingredients when ya can though." he advised.
Then Skadi mentioned that her mentor was a Veemon named Valt. That name caught Max's notice. "You know him too, huh?" he asked, interested. "I never met the guy myself, but he was a mentor to both of my parents at one point." He didn't reveal that back then he was actually a Dracomon named Ryu that seemed to change species through reconfiguration, but that was a tale for another time, when he hopefully knew better. "He's a good guy, you're lucky to have him as your instructor."
Max pondered that option for a moment. If he had trouble digivolving as predicted, maybe he could search out Valt and ask him to help him? After all, he had managed to help his father evolve to Rookie level. Well, maybe that could be something for later.
To Max's delight, they thought it was a great dish. He had been worried for a moment that he might have added a bit too much peppers and made it too spicy, but, thankfully it was just enough to activate tastebuds without causing too much pain.
This praise made him feel... really good actually. While he had been tasked by Chef Flawizarmon to always look for ways to improve himself, well, he also said that when no further improvement was possible, simply take a bow and feel grateful for the praise, which he did.
Max would then eat his own serving. While he did so, he overheard a Burgamon trying to strike a bargain with the food vendors of the village. He recognized the Burgamon as the chef of the Trailmon's catering car, and it seemed he was trying to buy as much ingredients as he could since he thought that it was the ingredients that were what made this meal so tasty. Well, Max just hoped he had learned a lesson from this demonstration of how to make some good grub in the small kitchen that he had, and would serve better in future.
When he was finished, Max would then turn to Kenny and Skadi. "So, out of curiosity, where are you guys headed after this?" he asked. "Are you headin' to Terminus with us? Or goin' the other way to Rosewood? Or somewhere else?" Max was by now intrigued with how much common knowledge he had with these two and rather hoped to get to know them better. It'd be nice if they were going to Terminus as well, then Max could maybe speak to them as well as White Wolf and her partners for the rest of the afternoon on the Trailmon when it could go again.

While trying to help Kenny clean his eyes, Skadi had caught a glimpse of Agumon sighing and rolling his eyes instead of actually trying to help him or just asking if he was OK. She was in the right mind to up and punt him in the face right then and there, but since that was against KIZNA code, she just glared at Agumon and clenched her fist, silently seething.
Max had recommended to Kenny to write down the ingredients while he could. He did have a good point about that. All those ingredients would be hard to remember so easily. So, why not take the time to write it down? ”Gonna do that now. Thanks Max.” Kenny noted, as he pulled out his phone and started to write them all down. Hopefully, dad would appreciate that.
Meanwhile, Max had told Skadi that Valt had mentored his own parents before, before telling her that she was lucky to have him as her own mentor. Of course, Max hadn’t known how Skadi became Valt’s apprentice in the first place, but Skadi just giggled and blushed, rubbing her head in embarrassment, ”Aw, thanks Max.” She replied.
The praise from everyone involved hadn’t gone unheeded to the Impmon X, as he took a bow. Skadi, in turn, was enthusiastically clapping, like if Max had just pulled off a big song and dance number. Kenny just looked at Skadi, amused by her little antics, before clapping slightly himself, before both continued to eat. But somehow, Agumon had consumed the plate in a record amount of time. His earlier stunt mocking Kenny had cost him all sympathy points from Skadi, and she, too, would sigh and roll her eyes at what he did.
But otherwise, it was all good. While they continued to eat, Kenny and Skadi would talk to each other between mouthfuls of food; "I still can't believe meat apples are a thing." He told Skadi, who chuckled in response.
"Just goes to show you, the Digital World is always full of surprises. I've gotten used to it, because, you know. But I don't blame you. At least you-know-who here managed to guide you most of the way so far!" She performed a quick flourish with her arms, before pointing at herself with a cheesy grin, which Kenny responded by affectionately ruffling her hair, as always, resulting in the both of them laughing affectionately.
"Heh. True. Still, makes me think what's in store for the both of us in the near future. And I won't lie. I'm honestly a little nervous about what's ahead for the both of us, especially since we joined KIZNA. And I really don't want to let those guys down." Kenny sighed a little, but Skadi just pat his back to reassure him.
"You'll be fine, pal!" She replied, "I'm pretty sure they don't just let any Joe Schmoes into KIZNA for shits and giggles. Ryouta and Valt saw something special within us, and I'm more than sure that we're gonna do something amazing."
Kenny paused for a moment, before, finally, he replied, "Thank you, Skadi. I needed that pep talk." That was met with Skadi giving him a kind smile and another pat on the back.
Having finished eating themselves, Max had asked Kenny and Skadi where they were going next. "Good question, actually. We were planning to go back to Terminus to pick up some supplies for our upcoming mission." Kenny answered him, as he picked up his and Skadi's empty dishes, before washing it off.
"Yeah. It's gonna be our first big one as part of KIZNA, and honestly? I'm very excited for it." She added.

"I actually know the lead human member of Haunted Threnody, as well as his partners," White Wolf brought up. "My friend Adrian introduced us when he asked us both to help him and his partner with something. It's a long story. We also might've destroyed an evil airship before."
"How did you become friends with that boy again?" Gabumon had to ask. Digimon or not, ending up in an airship before destroying it was definitely nothing that someone would consider normal.
"He was in one of my classes back at school. Besides it's not like he wanted to drag us to that airship."
"We didn't even know it existed."
It was then that the three realized that Kenny, Skadi and Max could overhear the crazy story that they were talking about, and it was just sounding crazier and crazier by the second. "I'll tell you guys some other time, if you really want to know."
Agumon had indeed finished his dish before the others did. He happily ran right up to Max and extended his plate out. "That curry was really good! Can I have some more... please?" He had almost forgotten to say the magic word, as he tended to do back home in Rebecca's apartment.
This was one of the rare instances that White Wolf actually felt happy, without having to hide behind the lights and cameras of stardom. She was still wearing her black eyemask, of course, but... a thought was flooding through her mind. Maybe, just maybe she would be able to still feel this way if she took it off? White Wolf touched her mask...
This is crazy, this is crazy, this is CRAZY... They know I'm an idol! They can't... they... ah, screw it all to hell!
Almost cinematically, White Wolf walked a little bit deeper into Rosewood, much to her partners' dismay. She reached a hand for her eyemask.
I may not be able to be happy in the human world without my mask...
The idol grabbed onto the mask and ripped it right off.
But maybe in the Digital World... I can be.
She looked right back at the group and gave a big smile. One by one... maybe then I can feel normal in the end.

Max turned his head to White Wolf as she mentioned she knew the lead human member of Haunted Threnody personally. "Oh yeah? That's awesome!" Max said, grinning. "You got any idea where he might be goin' next? I haven't seen them in Rosewood for a while."
Then she mentioned something about an evil airship. "Uh... say what now?" Max asked, frowning. He knew his father's partner also had an airship, but, Daedalus wasn't evil in the slightest.
Welp, it seemed that was a story for another day though. Agumon asked for seconds, and Max grinned with satisfaction as he gave him another serving. "Alrighty then. Best thing about this recipe, it can be cooked in bulk for when ya want more."
Max listened in as politely as he could with Kenny and Skadi's conversation. It seemed they were taking their first steps into the digital world, and were trying to get their bearings. And with that, the Impmon-X found he had that in common with them. This was his first journey out of Rosewood, and so far he had hopefully demonstrated and shared a recipe that would give joy and health to those that also cooked it. Not something too difficult that was beyond the skillset of most people, just an easy recipe that could taste great even if it was a little overcooked or undercooked. Either way, he hoped the digimon in this village might spread the news of his cookery here.
He planned for a little moment here. Maybe he could demonstrate the same recipe in the West and South in future? Spread his reputation around the digital world? Then he could really get his dreams started once he got his paws on some legendary ingredients that he had heard of from his mentor.
Max then got his answer as to where Kenny and Skadi were going. They would be going with him to Terminus, which he found delightful. "Awesome! We can chat more and get to know each other on the Trailmon then, if ya like." he beamed.
He then noticed the other human had walked away for a few moments. When he looked around for her, he saw she returned, this time without her mask.
"Ah, heya." Max said, a little puzzled. "Was wonderin' why you were wearing that thing earlier. Anythin' change?"
With that, the air was split by a long, loud toot of the Trailmon's horn.
"Welp, there we go, that's our ten minute notice!" Max declared, quickly packing up all his cooking utensils. He'd take note to wash them later. "Back to the station then!"
Assuming they were going in the same direction of course. Max intended to continue onward to Terminus, so he was of course interested in re-embarking.

What was that talk about an evil airship again? Kenny found himself scratching his head, and Skadi tilting her's in confusion as Rebecca, Agumon and Gabumon talked about it. As the human girl asked if he wanted to hear it for some other time, Kenny just shook his head, "No, I'm fine." He answered.
As much as the curry was delicious, both human and Digimon knew their limits, so they didn't take their own second serving. But Kenny had finished up writing up the recipe on the phone, at least. So hey, at least he could try and teach his dad in the near future... and maybe Ryouta too, when he would catch up again with him. Speak of the devil, Max happily exclaimed his interest in chatting with them on the Trailmon, "Yeah, that'd be great, Max." Kenny replied keenly, "Maybe we could tell you the story of how we joined KIZNA while we get there?"
"It's a really funny story, actually. I bet you'll love it." She winked at him. Or at least, she tried to. Honestly, it was hard to tell with those bangs covering her eyes, yet was somehow able to see perfectly no matter the form, but Kenny was pretty used to it by now.
They had been so focused on their own personal chitchat, Kenny and Skadi had forgot that White Wolf and her Digimon had vanished for a few moments, much to their confusion. He quickly leaned down to his partner and whispered, "Hey Skadi, did you see where White Wolf ran off to?" She just shrugged in response. Just a few moments later, White Wolf would come back, but this time without her mask, much to the two's confusion. Max had asked her about the mask, so Kenny would add, "Your smile looks nice, at least." Skadi nodded in agreement as well.
The loud blare of the Trailmon's horn quickly broke through the tension. With Max declaring it was time to go, they too would follow suit, as they walked along. As they did, Skadi looked up to Kenny, "Do you have the list of supplies we need for the mission?" She asked him.
Kenny nodded happily, "Yeah, I do. Wrote it all down on my phone earlier. Hopefully when we get there, we can stock up, prepare, and hey, maybe we could upgrade my D-Nexus as well to support Digi-Modify, too, while we're at it." He said, before pulling out his unmodded Digivice. As useful as it was, that ability would help to give them quite the 'oomph' Skadi would need in the mission.

White Wolf's face morphed into an expression of sadness when Max asked where Haunted Threnody would be playing next. "Sadly, I'm not entirely sure. They honestly just seemed to fade out of existence all of a sudden. I'm thinking something happened that forced them to split up. The lead singer and I don't like each other very much, so I haven't been keeping up on them."
The three partners noticed Max's confusion when they mentioned an airship. "Don't worry yourself, the airship was destroyed and there weren't many of the crew that survived. I doubt it was anyone you knew, so don't get caught up about it."
Agumon was delighted to be able to get seconds of the delicious curry and rice. White Wolf chuckled a bit at his behavior. "I've only been a Tamer for about a year now, and I've definitely noticed that Digimon require more to eat than humans. This recipe of yours could be a life saver for our family, Max. Is it possible to get the recipe for back home?"
After potentially getting the recipe, that would be when White Wolf moved a bit further into town and took off her mask. The others seemed decently surprised when she took it off. Max asked why she was even wearing it in the first place. White Wolf blushed. "W-Well, I'm not exactly the most confident person out there. Before, wearing this mask helped me even be able to look at people... but I wanna try keeping it off for now..."
Then Kenny had to add that White Wolf's smile looked nice. The girl immediately turned bright red and quickly put her mask back on. "It's a lot harder than I thought, if I'm being honest... I better try it with my boyfriend instead of other random strangers."
Before anymore was said, a loud toot of the Trailmon's horn alerted everyone that the train was finally able to leave. "FINALLY! On the way to Terminus once again!"
"You all are going to Terminus as well, correct?" Gabumon asked the rest of the group. "More allies is always beneficial. We would love to accompany you on the Trailmon."

"Heh, I'd like to hear that." Max answered Kenny with interest. From what he had heard, KIZNA was a pretty big deal, so he'd rather like to learn about how one went about joining.
He was more sad to hear that Haunted Threnody hadn't been heard of for a while now. "Aw, that's a shame." he stated when he heard that they might have broken up. Well, bands do that often. Although he raised an eyebrow when White Wolf stated she and the lead singer didn't get along very well.
Max was still puzzled about the news of the airship, but decided that in the end it probably wasn't worth asking more about it. Best leave some stones unturned after all. Still, he was cheered by White Wolf asking for the recipe too.
"Sure, got a pen and paper?" he asked. When she had the proper writing materials, he'd tell her the recipe for use back home so she and her partners could cook it themselves.
On the subject of White Wolf revealing her true face from behind her mask, Max felt that he could relate to that somehow. After all, the Impmon-X wore his big scarf over his mouth, and also wore an eyepatch over his right eye. There were things about him that he'd rather keep hidden from the world too.
But that wasn't something he was prepared to reveal yet. He kept his right eye hidden for a reason - the machinations of some dormant virus that he had inherited from his father. He didn't want to scare other digimon with it, so he mainly wore it and claimed it was a seal on his true power so he wouldn't hurt others. Thankfully that was truthful and reasonable enough in the digital world that few would question him about this.
Kenny complimented her, and White Wolf mentioned that she'd rather like to try smiling and communicating with her boyfriend unmasked. Max agreed with this. "Of course, if you want to have an intimate relationship with someone, you can't hide your face from them." the Impmon-X reasoned. He intended to do the same with the digimon that would be his boyfriend one day... or girlfriend, he wasn't yet sure on who they would be yet. Probably boyfriend though, he felt more comfortable around male digimon anyway.
After the Trailmon's horn blew, they made their way back to the station, and soon resumed their seats. A few more passengers than usual had joined them - apparently their presence in the village had made about a dozen local digimon interested in checking out Terminus City for themselves. Still, Max was happy to sit down with Kenny, Skadi, White Wolf, Agumon and Gabumon and chat with them for the rest of the way.
Then, a few minutes later, a whistle was blown, the Trailmon blew his horn again, and they were once again in motion through the forest.
"So, Kenny, you mentioned you'd like to share how ya joined KIZNA." Max said to the human. "Wanna share that now?" he asked, eagerly.

The sight of Agumon nabbing a second serving, before White Wolf adding about her surprise on how much Digimon tended to eat made Kenny want to add in his own piece, "Maybe it's because Digimon need all that energy to burn? How else would they be able to pull off all those crazy attacks without breaking a sweat, anyways?" He pointed out, eyeing Skadi. Certainly, even so-called 'Rookie' Digimon could hit like a truck, so maybe that wouldn't that be much of a surprise. Although Skadi was more a sweets person, herself. But then again, Kenny always found people weird.
White Wolf would then explain about why she wore the mask. Kenny had a simple reason why he wore glasses; he had quite the poor natural eyesight, and couldn't exactly afford contacts yet. It probably wasn't the most dramatic explanation in the world, but it had to do. Max would then agree with Wolf, pointing out she couldn't always hide her face from others, "He's right you know. Although I'm more for a platonic relationship; I'm not exactly ready to settle down just yet." He chuckled shyly, rubbing his arm, "Ever since I moved to Japan, I've actually made quite a few new friends along the way, and become much more open to others." Skadi would happily cuddle up to her tamer's leg as she heard that, which Kenny responded by ruffling her hair once again. He wasn't looking for love... yet.
Gabumon had asked about whenever they were all going to Terminus, to which Skadi nodded, "Yeah, we're just going picking up supplies for our upcoming training mission. Best be prepared for it, you know?"
Having made their way back to the Trailmon, Kenny nestled himself next to Max, while Skadi had laid on her tamer's lap, yawning quietly as she snuggled herself on him. The new gathering of Digimon to the train did catch him a little off guard, but he shrugged it off. He subsequently chuckled quietly to himself, petting the relaxed Valaismon, while Max would ask Kenny about how the young man joined KIZNA. Of course, it would be quite the funny story to a person hearing it second hand, but it would be good.
"It's a funny story, actually." Kenny began, "It all happened when we were training at the Spartan Training Grounds, because Skadi sought to protect me further after a... certain incident I'd rather not talk about." He awkwardly rubbed the back of his head, "Then Ryouta and Valt came along and offered to spar with us. Of course, they won, but Valt found a lot of potential within Skadi and took her under his wing as a disciple."
Noticing that Skadi was slowly starting to relax herself onto his lap, Kenny would gently stroke her wool like she did a cat, "About a week later, they trained us, and it turned out they were part of KIZNA too. Valt promised that if she digivolved to her Champion level for the first time, we could join. Well, she did, and now look at us." He felt himself relax into his seat with a content sigh, "Like I told Skadi earlier, Ryouta and Valt saw a lot of potential within us and pulled us on board. Lord knows I wouldn't be here today without my pal."

When White Wolf had asked for Max's recipe, the Impmon-X agreed by asking if she had pen and paper. Her face immediately went white after that. "I didn't even think I would need any of that stuff today..." The teen idol Tamer simply lowered her head to the ground, both ashamed and disappointed. "Ooohhhhh..."
"M-Maybe they will have that stuff for use on the Trailmon?" Gabumon suggested, trying to cheer White Wolf up after her realization.
"They better; I refuse to leave Max's side until we get that recipe!"
"I truly hope you don't mean in the literal sense, Agumon."
After White Wolf put her mask back on, Kenny commented that you can't hide your face from someone you want to date. White Wolf simply chuckled. "Max, I'm going to be honest with you: thanks to a human world thing called the internet, people do that all the time. Of course it usually ends disastrously for people who do that. Never lie about yourself."
It truly was ironic for White Wolf to be saying this, as she has two completely different personalities depending on if she's wearing the mask or not.
The group made their way back to the Trailmon, where it was White Wolf's and Agumon's mission to find a pen and paper. While Gabumon sat down with the others, who were discussing Kenny and Skadi's entry into KIZNA, the two of them began their search of the entire Trailmon for paper and a writing utensil. The amount of seriousness that they were taking with this mission made Gabumon laugh.
"White Wolf and Agumon have determination in common, so that's something. Still, I do not believe they should be taking their search for paper and pen THIS seriously."
Overhearing this, White Wolf looked back over at Gabumon. "Are you gonna help us search or not?!"
"I believe you two can find paper and pen fairly easily."

When they were settled on the Trailmon, once again on their way, Max listened to Kenny's explanation as best he could. The Impmon-X gave a small yawn, indicating he rather liked the idea of a nap not long afterward. But he at least stayed awake to listen to their story.
Max gave a nod of acknowledgement that he wouldn't press further on the thing Kenny didn't want to talk about. But it turned out that Ryouta and Valt were there to act as mentors where Kenny and Skadi needed one, and it turned out that Valt saw potential with them.
"That's pretty sweet." Max said, noting what he was told. KIZNA seemed to judge potential new followers by their character and potential. For a few moments, he wondered if they'd accept someone like him among their ranks. Well, he had residual memories from his fathers, Bellamy and Coronamon, and their dealings with those he knew were in KIZNA - Ryouta and Valt, Yuuki and Hikaru, Koharu, Kon-Chan and Warg, Karin and Freya, Tetsu and Gryz, they all seemed to be fair people, even if he hadn't met them himself. Max noted that neither of his parents disliked any of them. Maybe if he met them, he'd have a chance of befriending them in that way too?
As Gabumon and Agumon hunted for pen and paper, White Wolf mentioned something called "the internet" to Max, and that it caused humans to constantly hide their true selves from each other. Talk like that sounded familiar to the Impmon-X. "Hmm. I heard a digimon say a philosophy like that too." he remarked. "Everyone has three faces. One they show to the world, one they only show to friends and family, and one they never show to anyone - their true selves. Can see that, but, the less difference between those three faces, the more trustworthy the person? Or somethin' like that, eh, kinda tired now."
If Agumon and Gabumon managed to find pen and paper, he'd tell them what to write on it for the recipe at some point before they arrived in Terminus. Until then, he'd have a nice long afternoon nap at some point as the Trailmon made its way toward the central city.

Kenny had noticed that Max was starting to get a little tired during the explanation, and could anybody really blame him? A long train ride could easily tire anyone out, especially a chef who worked really hard today during his little impromptu cooking lesson, and his own assistant too, as he felt Skadi starting to doze off as well in his lap. But for what it entailed, at least Max enjoyed it, as Kenny smiled happily, "Thanks, man."
Honestly, as he leaned back onto his seat, and started to pull out his headphones and smartphone, giving a small glance at White Wolf and Agumon's overly dramatic quest for pen and paper, he started to reflect on that day. Today was certainly quite the learning experience for him. For one, he and Skadi learnt a lot about cooking thanks to Max, and the work that went into it, and they also learnt a few new life skills along the way. And they got a new friend too, the son of Bellamy, no less. It was a good afternoon well spent, all in all.
Just as Kenny turned on a saved video on his phone, he felt Max slump onto his shoulder, dozing off. Frankly, Kenny didn't really mind. Max did a lot of work today, it was only fair he at least could return the favour by letting the Impmon X lean on him for a while until they got there. It was going to be a while anyway. So why not let Max rest for a job well done?
