The Price of Losing [Samantha]

It has been only a few hours since Desmond with Sam and their partners went back to the real world. The way home was easy as Desmond found that his Digivice could create a portal close to his home so they didn't have to go the Trailmon terminal. However, the blond tamer did not really talk to Demi during the trip. He was mostly looking at the ground while holding Sam's hand. It didn't take that long to get into his home and finally relax.
Even when they came back home, Desmond did not really talk to Demi. He was still feeling terribly guilty that the Digimon lost his left arm in the fight against the evil Hyogamons. Not that he could have prevented it, but he felt that maybe, just maybe, he could have protected him. Thus, the blond tamer spent most of the night either avoiding the fireball or staying in his room. One thing that was making him feel like a terrible tamer was that Demi seemed to be completely unaware that he did lose his arm for good. The DemiMeramon was all smile even if his tamer was avoiding him.
Demi was in the living room eating popcorn while watching a movie on Desmond's laptop. His tamer decided that Demi could have all the food he wanted so that he wouldn't be too sad. But it seemed that he didn't have to do so because quite frankly, the Digimon was very far from being sad. He had Hawk with him and that giant sticker on his left side, he was in a happy place. The Frenchman had a hard time trying to figure out how come he could be that happy. He was leaning on the bedroom door without a smile. He was trying to not cry, to be honest. But he didn't want Demi to see him that way and ask him questions about why he was so sad. "I'm going to bed..." He would say making Demi turn around for a second to shout. "Good night!" And with that, he was back to watching the movie.
As Desmond went hiding in the bedroom, he waited and prayed that Sam would come in. He didn't know how to feel but he knew that if anyone, she was the one that could understand him. With his right arm in a cast, the Frenchman didn't take time to shower. He kept moving his fingers on the cast with his left hand as if it would speed up the healing. After a moment, he slowly undressed and put on his pajamas. He sat down on his bed staring at nothing while trying to control his breathing. He didn't want to cry but he could feel tears slowly forming in his eyes.
The blond tamer then saw the bedroom door open and saw that his girlfriend was there. "Hey, Sam..." He faintly said while trying to look normal. He tried to smile but it wasn't a convincing one, he never been a good actor. "Thanks for coming home with me." He then said before rubbing his eyes with his left hand. He moved to the side to give her enough space to sit down next to him.
"Demi seems to be doing good so far...." He did use the word "seems" because he was exactly sure how his partner thinks. He hoped that unlike him, he wasn't acting. "I'm sure that he's happy that you and Hawk are here." And he paused to sigh. "I... I know that I too feel happy that you two are staying with me tonight..." His voice was a bit shaky but he was telling the truth. Pausing again for a second, he looked at Sam with his eyes getting red. "How... How are you holding up?" He then asked knowing that she also went through a bad time with the IceDevimon having some kind of control on her.

Desmond was a bit surprised at how his girlfriend was calm but to be honest, that might be what he needed right now. He looked at her and a small but genuine smile appeared on his tired face. "Thanks." He simply said. He did feel his eyes watering and swiftly wiped them with his good hand as he looked away for a second. He would quickly turn his head around to see how beautiful she was. He felt that he was perhaps the luckiest guy in the world right now. "Thanks, for staying." He kept his smile for a bit longer before going for a quick kiss on her cheek. He felt his own cheeks go pink as his lips touched her face.
The blond then laughed but it only lasted for a second. His face became neutral at first. "It just that..." He paused and sighed. "I keep thinking that it's my fault that Demi... Lost his arm." He really didn't like saying those words. "I know that he's my partner and is much stronger than I am but... He's still a kid." Another pause to look at the floor. He took a deep breath and slowly moved his eyes to look at Sam's. "Demi is still a small kid. I should be able to shield him, right?" The more time he spent with the DemiMeramon, the more he saw him as his very little brother. "He is... So innocent. He doesn't deserve that." Taking another deep breath in an attempt to calm himself, the Frenchman left hand went to touch her hand.
"And it pains me to see that he seems to be completely fine with it... I think that is what that makes me so... Mad about myself." He wasn't sure if it was the right emotion to feel, but it was easier to feel angry than sad. "I don't even know why I keep going back to his world. I mean, it would be much safer in here, right?" It was easy to see that he felt a very heavy burden on his shoulders. "Both, you and me. We could live here forever and I'm sure that Hawk and Demi wouldn't mind it at all." Desmond's eyes became sad and his mouth opened to speak again. "But I keep going there."
"I want to... Have Demi be happy. I want him to feel that I do care about him and I would go anywhere for him to feel at home." The tamer took another deep breath and held it for a moment. "And I want you to feel that way too, Sam." He said as he exhaled. "I want you to be happy, I want you to feel like I care and that I will go anywhere, anywhere you want to, just so you can be happy." And he smiled but his lips were trembling a bit. "Sam, I'm sorry I didn't tell you the truth... I'm just... Me, I guess?" His golden eyes were fixated on hers. "Do you think that you can... Love me?" His smile widened a bit on each side. "If only for today?"
Back outside in the living room, the movie just ended but Demi was watching the credits roll. He couldn't believe that there were so many different names and a lot of them that he couldn't say. "Look, look!" The Digimon said while pointing the screen of the laptop. "There are that much people in the world?" His eyes were so big that it was kind of comical. "Is there a list of everyone's names?" He asked still amazed at the sheer number of names he read. "Do you think that we can find Sam and Desmond in it too?" He then inched closer to his best friend. "Are we on a list as well?" Demi's smile was even bigger than his eyes. "Can we be in a list together?"

There was always something about Samantha that made Desmond just feel better about himself. Maybe it was in the words she spoke or the way she said them. What she did said was true, the blond tamer did enjoy going in the Digital World with Demi. It was a form of escape in which they had an adventure in it. And now that they found Sam and Hawk, it only got better. The Frenchman placed an arm around her shoulders and pulled her closer without saying anything at first. He just smiled shyly and looked at their feet. She was right again, they had to persevere and move past whatever happened today. It took him a few seconds before turning his face to see hers and even in the low light, he felt that they were both pretty red. His smile became larger but there was still a tear on his eye.
Desmond didn't sweep the tear away, he didn't even know that it was there. A few moments ago, he wanted to be strong and everything. Now, he felt that he didn't have to look strong. He knew that his girlfriend could understand him completely and that it was okay for him to feel vulnerable. The Frenchman kept looking at Sam's eyes with that tear now falling down due to him blinking. He didn't look down or wipe his cheek. He giggled a bit and put his forehead on hers. Then, he closed his tired eyes and began whispering. "I love you Sam." He simply said but with his cheek going from pink to bright red. He moved his head away from hers only to inch closer for a kiss. "Should we go to bed?"
Meanwhile, in the main room, Demi was still glued to the laptop screen. To be honest, he didn't know how to write nor read all those letters but he was pretty sure that they were names. Some of them were very long as well. When Hawk told him that their names were just there, the Digimon opened his mouth widely trying to figure if he missed it. His head kept moving up and down trying to follow all those letters. Even when he lost an arm today, his admiration for simple things was quite charming. When the credits ended, Demi would turn around to see his best friend and point at the screen. "Do you want to watch another one?" He asked full of joy and energy.
Back into the couple's room, Desmond was now laying on the bed on his left side so that it wouldn't hurt too much. He closed his eyes and then giggle and open them back. He was tired but he also liked seeing her slowly falling to sleep. This time, however, it would be the blond tamer's turn to fall asleep. Just before pulling Sam closer to him to feel her warmth, Desmond slowly feel asleep. Tomorrow will be a better day, at least, he hoped so.
On the next day, Desmond wouldn't the one waking up, or more like not moving. His body was now sore and his right arm was pretty numb by then. If Sam were be laying in bed until he wakes up, well, they are going to be in bed for a little while. Not that he didn't like having his girlfriend next to him. He opened one eye to see if she was moving and would close it if she were to do so to fake that he was asleep.
After a little bit later, Desmond was now in the kitchen making breakfast. even if he lives in Japan, he was still used to eat eggs for breakfast. He wasn't sure if Sam would like them but if not, he knows a certain fireball that would devour them. Speaking of which, Demi was already awake with his face resting on the laptop screen. His tamer didn't say anything but did laugh a bit. "Demi." He said softly but too soft for the Digimon to notice. Looking around to see if Hawk was around, the room wasn't very big so he would find him sooner or later. "Can you wake Demi, please?" Desmond would ask. "Just tell him that food is ready."

Demi opened his eyes and yawned before smiling at the brunette. "Good morning!" He shouted before moving his remaining arm forward to hug Sam. It was then that he saw that he did not have his left arm anymore. The fireball looked confused for a moment like he forgot that he did lose that arm the day before. The Digimon stood silent as he tried to look at his left side. The giant sticker was still there to hide whatever wound there was underneath. Sadness could be seen in his eyes for a moment. But then he began smiling once more and tried to look if Hawk still had his giant sticker as well. "Sam!" And he went for a half hug. It was hard to tell if he was genuinely happy or not. "I smell food!"
Desmond didn't look at his partner as he was busy flipping the eggs. His right arm was still hurting but maybe not as much. Luckily he was left-handed so he managed to cook without many difficulties. "It's almost ready, Demi." He said out loud. He tried to put the eggs on a plate and almost dropped the whole plate while moving it to the table. "Love, could you get the orange juice in the fridge?" He didn't even notice that he just called Sam, Love. "There should be enough for all of us." He said as he sat down and massage his right shoulder for a few seconds.
The fireball began floating toward the table with his usual smile. He reached out to grab his share of the breakfast but heard his tamer talking. "Use a fork, Demi." The Digimon nodded and looked on the table for utensils. There was none, Desmond didn't take them out. "Oh, erm... Sam, could you get forks for us?" He asked his girlfriend while blushing a bit. It was easy to see that the blond tamer was distracted. "Oh, and glasses if you can." They would wait for the girl to help them set the table and then began eating their breakfast. Demi was the first to take a bite and his eyes lit up. "Yum!" He shouted as he went to grab his glass of orange juice.
The Frenchman would stay relatively quiet mostly looking at Sam while eating. He was trying to avoid looking at the fire Digimon so that he wouldn't notice that he still felt guilty about him losing his arm. "Anyone's still hungry?" He would ask after finishing his meal. He saw that Demi wanted to raise his hand but stopped midway and lowered it shyly but he didn't say anything about it. It seemed that Demi noticed that Desmond was kind of avoiding him. It would take a few more seconds for the tamer to speak to his partner. "Did you sleep well, Demi?" He asked while scratching his eyebrow. Demi nodded and smiled. "Yes!" He answered with joy.
"Oh, erm..." Desmond began speaking but stopped after looking at Sam. "I think that we should go to the Hardware Den today..." He slowly suggested. "I heard there's a good trader, we might get something nice if we go there." It was a lie, he wanted to see if there could find that Datamon and get a new arm or whatever for Demi. "What do you guys think?" He then asked while looking at Hawk first and then to his girlfriend and then Demi. "I mean, we could do something else as well..."

When Hawk made fun of his tamer, Desmond also turned red. It was only then that he realized that he did call Sam, love. His jaw dropped a bit as his eyes went to look at his girlfriend. He noticed that she wasn't looking at him though. His attention slowly turned to look at Demi who was trying to not laugh. To be fair, he didn't really understand why it was funny but seeing both tamers being red was pretty laughable. The fireball pointed at Sam and then Desmond trying to find which one of them was blushing the most while giggling. "Your face is red!" He shouted out loud. The Frenchman looked at the table and didn't say anything for a moment.
And then, Hawk made fun of them once more making the blond tamer blush even more. "I..." He didn't know what to say. Demi was giggling and smiling while trying to cover it with his hand. "Your face is red!" He shouted once more after a second. Desmond moved his hand to find and hold Sam's hand. He didn't exactly know why he did that, maybe to tell her that he too was embarrassed by this situation. He was hoping that she would try to look at him as well. His eyes were still fixed to the table before slowly moving to meet Sam's eyes. A shy smile could be seen as he looked at the brunette.
"How about you, Demi?" The tamer then asked after a bit of silence. Demi looked at Hawk and then back to the Frenchman. "Of course!" He said with a smile. "Anything for our love!" He thought that it would be funny to repeat what Hawk said earlier. Desmond sighed. It was nice to see both Digimon being happy though, even if they were making fun of them. "I guess we are going to the Hardware Den then..." He slowly said while still looking at the girl. "Let's wash the dishes first and then we can go..."
A few moments later, Desmond would open a Digi-Port to Mainframe Hill. Since he never been to the Hardware Den nor knew where it was, he thought that it would be wise to go to that place and ask for direction from the nice Piximon doctor. The pink fairy Digimon would gladly give them a map and replace Demi's sticker with a new one before letting them go while wishing them good luck and safe travels.
After receiving the map, the blond tamer would ask Hawk if it would be okay for him to fly them to the Den. Even if he didn't enjoy flying, well, he actually hates being that high up but it was needed. He knew that Hawk would try to make it scary for him so he tried to prepare himself for that. And it wouldn't work as soon as he hopped on the back of Hawk. "Please don't go too fast for me..." He whispered to the Digimon but maybe not even loud enough for him to hear it. Demi, on the other hand, was quite eager for the whole flying experience and did hope that his best buddy would go fast and high.

As soon as Desmond climbed on Hawk's back, he already knew that he wasn't going to enjoy the ride. He sat behind Sam so that he could place his arms around her waist and rest his body on her back and closing his eyes. He kept his eyes closed even after landing. He stayed there, still holding on Sam for a few seconds before opening an eye. He then tried to hop off the Halsemon but vertigo got the better of him. He just flopped and fell on his left arm making him grunt. Demi also landed on the ground and began poking at his tamer. "Are you okay, Desmond?" He asked while poking his head. "I'm fine... Just give me a second..." The fireball began laughing softly. Surely, Hawk would be laughing at him soon enough.
The blond tamer then stood up before getting grabbed by the Hawkmon a bit away from Sam and Demi. The human stayed silent as he listened to the Digimon telling him that Sam was acting weird today. To be fair, he too felt guilty about yesterday so he did think that maybe she was feeling that way too. "I... I will keep on eye on her." He then said after a second of silence. "You keep an eye on Demi, alright?" He then asked Hawk. "I know that he looks happy but... I think that he might be hiding his real emotions."
Demi was indeed bouncing around Sam happily. Desmond saw Hawk go toward them first. He stayed there for a second before looking up and take a deep breath. "Act normal, Desmond." He whispered to himself. "Just smile." The blond tamer would then run to meet his friends and go next to the brunette to hold her hand.
Around them, there were windmills and solar panels. In front of them was an entrance to some place underground. It did look kind of shady, to be honest. None the less, that is where they had to go according to Piximon's map. "Alright, let's go." The Frenchman said as he looked at Sam and smiled. "Let's find something good... To eat..." He didn't want to say out loud that he was looking for a Datamon that could maybe fix Demi's arm. He just felt that maybe Demi didn't want to talk about him having only one arm.
Once inside the entrance, they walked a bit and then found a town. A town that was certainly made for robot Digimon. There were big stacks of wires hanging on the ceiling but it was fairly bright with panels of lights pretty much everywhere. Demi was moving left and right just looking at the lit-up panels that he could poke. The light would change colors upon him poking and it made the Digimon giggle. He began poking it several times for fun. "Look, look!" The Fireball shouted at the trio, He turned his body to the side so he could see Hawk while being able to poke the panel. "Look, look!" Desmond wanted to tell his partner to stop but he looked like he was genuinely having a lot of fun. By then, the blond tamer wasn't smiling anymore, just keeping a straight face.
The human looked around them to see if he could spot any Digimon around. There were a few a bit further into the town. "I'll go see if they know a Datamon..." he slowly whispered to his girlfriend. "Wanna come with me?" He asked while still holding her hand. "Hawk can babysit Demi." He said while he winked at her. "Hoping that there's only one Datamon that knows how to fix other Digimon... Otherwise, it is going to be a long day..."

Demi was very happy that Hawk took his hand and go for a walk. He looked at the two tamers and smiled. "Save some food for us!" He shouted out loud before moving along with Hawk. He wanted to wave at the humans but saw that his only remaining was already holding his best Digimon buddy. His smile disappeared for a second and his eyes moved to look at the ground. And then, he lifted up his eyes again and moved them to look at the bird Digimon. His usual smile came back and he leaned his whole round body on his best friend. "I wonder what kind of food there is in a place like this one!" It was rather hard to know if Demi was being genuinely happy or that it was just an act.
Desmond was also holding hands but with his girlfriend. He watched his partner slowly getting farther away but did not notice that Demi looked at the ground for a second. He did hear the Digimon talk about food so that was a good sign. After making sure that they were far enough, the blond tamer sighed and looked at Sam. "Good thing that Hawk is here." He softly said. "Let's hope that he can distract Demi long enough for us to find that Datamon." He paused to look around them and sighed. So far, it was pretty quiet. There was plenty of light to see well but no real sign of activity. Maybe they would need to get deeper into that town. The Frenchman would look for signs telling them where they would find the center of that underground town.
Scanning the place for a short moment, the blond tamer already felt a bit uneasy. He knew, well hoped, that this underground city wouldn't collapse on them but he wasn't used to being into a cavern like this one. He shivered before asking a question to the brunette. "How about this way?" He asked while pointing to his right. The human then thought of an idea. He let go of the girl's hand and took out his Digivice. He pressed the buttons randomly but nothing happened. He would try that a few more times before giving up. "Wanna try with yours?" He doubted that it would work but he was ready to try anything right now.
"Well, I guess we can start looking for a Digimon that knows the place." The human said as he turned his attention to his girlfriend. He then turned silent for a moment. He remembered Hawk telling him that Sam wasn't entirely okay. He also told him to not say anything but that was hard for him to do so. "Erm..." Moving his body to be in front of the girl and reached for her hand, Desmond took a deep breath before talking. "Are you okay, Sam?" He slowly asked. "I mean, you have been quiet today..." He said hoping that she would open up to him just like that.

Desmond stayed silent for a moment upon hearing Sam saying that she was always quiet. Well, she is kind of quiet but not that quiet. He wanted to ask her more questions but didn't want her to feel uncomfortable. The blond tamer looked at his girlfriend in the eyes for a second before nodding. He inched closer to her and went for a hug without saying anything. He closed his eyes and held on to the hug for a bit longer before giving her a quick kiss on the side of her head. "I love you, Sam." He whispered. "And I'm here for you if anything is wrong." The Frenchman would let go of the hug and grabbed her hand once more. He smiled at the brunette. "Alright, let's go find that Datamon."
The couple began walking in the streets of the Hardware Den. For a reason that the tamer didn't know, the streets were kind of empty. Desmond could see some shadow moving when they got closer like they were hiding from them. That made it hard for them to look around for anyone to help them. It would take them a few more minutes of walking and searching around before seeing a bunch of Kokuwamon in a corner. There were four of them just not paying attention to the two humans. That could be their only chance to ask questions. Desmond turned his attention to Sam before pointing to the machine Digimon. "I'm going to see if they know anything..."
The blond tamer was still holding his girlfriend's hand as he went closer to the Digimon. "Erm..." He was almost whispering. The Kokuwamon didn't notice them. "Uh... Hi?" This time the four of them quickly turned around and looked angry. That made Desmond take a step back as his hand squeezed Sam's hand a bit tighter. "What do you want?" One of the machine Digimon asked in an annoyed voice. "Uh..." The Kokuwamon began laughing at the human. "What do you want?" They asked once more.
"Erm... We are looking for a certain, Datamon?" The four Kokuwamon looked at each other for a moment. They turned their back on the couple and began speaking to each other. Desmond bit his lower lip and turned his attention to the brunette without saying anything. After a few seconds, the Digimon all pointed to a direction. "Go there, you will find him." That was easy. "Oh and bring him something, he hates humans but can be bribed... With the right items." It was now that Desmond realized something. He did not have anything to trade on him. He had his cellphone, which he doubted that a machine Digimon would need. He had a good amount of Bits but they said the right items and not money.
"Thanks for helping us." The Frenchman said. "Oh and beware, he will be angry." Desmond nodded and waved them goodbye before looking at Sam. "Here we go, I guess." And then, the blond tamer realized something else. How are they going to fix Demi's arm if Demi isn't with them? Desmond felt very stupid, he certainly did not think that through. "Erm..." He was trying to find a way to tell her about how stupid he was. "Do we have a way to contact Hawk and Demi..."
